||Light 'em Up|| Prologue
Summary: She saved Hiro from bullies and then punched Tadashi when she thought he was one too. She calls herself Hiro's caretaker, and became Tadashi's best friend. Now she attends the same Institute as Tadashi as a robotics student. She's Sakura dubbed Cherry Blossom by Fred. She's Hiro's partner in crime, when it comes to annoying his brother and Tadashi's best friend. Pairing: Tadashi Hamada x Sakura Kamiya(OC) Rating || Genres || Warnings: T. Romance. Angst. Hurt/Comfort. Adventure A/N: I've written this for the longest time and figured it was time to start uploading this here! So enjoy!
"So was that everyone on your little Nerd Team?"
Hiro asked cheekily as he stood beside his brother, helmet in hand. They had just stepped out of the Institute, after meeting everyone, and were about to head home. His older brother grinned and nodded, putting his own helmet on.
"Yup!" He started the Moped as he counted his friends on his fingers one by one.
"Gogo. Fred. Honey. Wasabi. And..." His eyes widened with disbelief with a hint of fear, as he paled and breathed out.
"Oh crap!"
Hiro's smile widened all the more when his brother was almost immediately cut off by a loud shout from the top of the stairs.
"Tadashi Hamada!"
Both brothers turned to look at the stairs where a figure was walking towards them, their steps quick and determined. Tadashi seemed to shrink where he sat on his mopped, while his younger brother, with his helmet still on, waved excitedly.
"Hiya Sakura!"
Immediately a bright smile was directed towards him.
"Hello Hiro!"
The younger boy was then swept into a giant bear hug by the girl. She lifted him off his feet, the both of them laughing before she deposited him back on the ground looking at him, her eyes shining.
"Oh its so good to see you! Its been almost three days since I last saw you. I was worried when I got Tadashi's text about the Bot Fight. Why did you even go there anyway? No wait! What were you thinking?! For being a smart kid that was pretty dangerous and stupid Hiro."
As she spoke she started to turn his head around, eyeing him from head to toe.
"You're not hurt are you? If it were up to me I would glue that helmet to your head."
She laughed rapping her knuckles smartly against the object. Worry and concern was written all over the older girl's face as she inspected him for any kind of bruises or even a scratch.
"Seriously are you okay though?"
Her voice was soft, violet eyes laced with concern as she looked at Hiro in the eye.
"I'm okay, Sakura!"
Hiro said pushing her hands away gently, with a grin. He knew how the older girl could get with him. She was always checking up on him and making sure he was eating properly and sleeping well. Whenever he was about to try out one of his new inventions she would make sure to be just around the table, that was put up to protect them if need be, with a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. He didn't mind though. He loved the attention and Sakura loved to take care of him. Smiling lightly Sakura stood up straight, ruffling his hair, making it messier than ever.
"I know you're okay, Squirt!"
Hiro protested laughingly batting away her hands.
"H-hey Sa-kura."
A small voice called out. The girl turned, her long pony tail swishing around her head with the movement, to look at the older Hamada brother, her face completely devoid of any emotion. Beside her the younger Hamada brother grinned slyly as he stood behind the black haired girl, partly hidden. His eyes relayed a single message to the victim.
"You are so dead, bro!"

More than just friends | Adam Fantilli
Tumblr media
summary — The long distance makes Adam and y/n quite uncomfortable, so Adam visits his best friend and the two spend the day together at the ice rink, where they quickly realize that they are more than just friends
pairing — adam fantilli x y/n
words — 2790
Tumblr media
It wasn't always easy not always having your best friend by your side and suddenly not having as much contact as you have had in recent years.
For as long as you can remember, you and Adam have been best friends and simply inseparable.
Your mothers were close friends and had been since they were at school, so it was natural for them that you and Adam should become inseparable too.
And indeed, your mothers' plan had worked out, because now nineteen years later you two are still inseparable.
But since Adam signed with the Blue Jackets in July of this year and moved to Columbus, your relationship had changed a little.
You still try to video call and text as much as possible, but despite all of that, you're suffering quite a bit from Adam's move.
All those years you had supported your best friend and helped him live his dream as much as you could, but Adam was still your best friend and you wanted to see him more often.
With a sad sigh, you close your laptop, on which you had been working on your homework, and as if of its own accord your eyes wander over to the photo wall above your desk.
By now, the wall was pretty full of countless pictures of you and Adam with all your adventures and beautiful moments that you had experienced together over the years.
What you wouldn't give to have another photo of you and Adam on there.
"Y/n! Y/n! Y/n!" your little five-year-old sister shouted excitedly as she ripped open your bedroom door and came bouncing in.
She had her favorite cuddly toy Fred the turtle tucked under her arm, which she took everywhere with her.
"What's up?" you ask her with a sad smile on your lips, which is still on your face because of the memories.
"You have a visitor!" she continues excitedly as she comes to a stop in front of your bed and gives you the sweet smile she always gives when she really wants something.
You look at her in confusion. "Are you sure the visitor is here for me?"
Since Adam left, you've had a pretty good relationship with one person or another, but it was more of a college friendship, so you never actually got visitors.
"Yes, mommy told me to come and get you. Come on!"
Your little sister grabs your hand and starts tugging gently to make it clear that you should finally come with her.
"All right," you give in as you stand up and let your sister literally pull you out of your room.
As the two of you walk down the stairs, you start to wonder who might be visiting you?
Was it Chelsea, perhaps? Had you forgotten something during class?
Or was it Molly who wanted to pick you up for a study group that you hadn't marked in your diary?
Your mother's voice comes to you from the kitchen as she starts to talk happily about something and shortly afterwards a few plates start to clatter.
Who is sitting in the kitchen and who did your mother put food on?
"Y/n! Quickly! Otherwise he'll be gone again!"
Your little sister starts tugging at the hem of your hoddie and looks up at you with her blue eyes.
"He?" Now the confusion is clearly written on your face.
"Don't worry, Zoey. I won't be gone that quickly," suddenly comes a male voice that you would have recognized at any time.
"A-Adam?" you whisper quietly and incredulously as you look over at your best friend, who is standing in the hallway with a big grin on his face.
This can't be true. You had to be dreaming. Adam's not here, he's in Columbus getting ready for the next game.
"Hi y/n," he greets you and spreads his arms out. Without thinking twice, you bridge the few meters to your best friend and fall into his arms shortly afterwards.
"You... you're here. I mean really here," you stammer, a little confused and totally overwhelmed, as you bury your nose in his shoulder and inhale his aftershave, which you love and miss so much about him.
"I'm really here," he assures you as he wraps his arms around you and presses you gently against him.
Slowly, tears begin to well up in your eyes as you hug him tightly, as if you're afraid that he might disappear at any second and you might wake up.
"I've missed you so much" you sniffle softly as you fight back the tears that are slowly making their way down your cheeks.
"I've missed you so much too."
Adam gently strokes your back to calm you down.
For a few minutes you just stand there and enjoy the closeness of each other, which you had missed so much, before you separate again and wipe the tears from your eyes with the sleeve of your sweater.
"I'd say the surprise was a success," says your mother with a broad grin on her lips as she holds out a plate of pancakes and maple syrup to you both.
"So you knew and didn't tell me?"
"Of course I knew. I wasn't allowed to say anything because otherwise the surprise would no longer be a surprise. We'll leave you to it then. I think you have a lot to talk about. Come on, Zoey. "
Your mother presses a gentle kiss to your hair before taking your little sister by the hand, who waves goodbye to you and shortly afterwards the door slams shut and you are alone.
"Wow, I'm still so overwhelmed. I really can't believe you're actually sitting next to me..." you start to speak and shove a forkful of pancakes into your mouth. "How are you?"
"Good, really good. I've settled in well in Columbus and I'm getting on really well with my colleagues and everyone."
"That's really nice," you admit honestly and give Adam a smile.
Even though you miss Adam most of the time, you're also incredibly happy for your best friend that he's finally been able to live the dream he's had since he was little, even if it means your friendship has to take a bit of a back seat.
"Tell me more about Columbus."
You turn to Adam attentively so that you can pay more attention to your best friend as he starts to tell you about his apartment, his colleagues and, above all, field hockey.
And while Adam is talking, your attention is entirely on him.
"I have plans for you. Put on something comfortable."
Adam turns to you as he piles the plates on top of each other and then carries them over to the sink.
For the past hour and a half, you've been glued to Adam's lips as he talks almost non-stop about his new life in Columbus.
Until recently, you had doubts and concerns that Adam might have been deceiving you during your phone calls about his new chapter in Columbus, but now here he was, telling you everything and his eyes were more or less shining, you were certain that Adam was actually doing well in Columbus.
"And where are we going?" you ask curiously as you tie your hair into a ponytail.
"You'll find out then and now hurry up. We have to leave right away."
"I've actually forgotten what it feels like to be late. I've never been late since you left," you tease him with a grin and then leave the kitchen to go and change.
Less than ten minutes later, you find yourself next to Adam in a rental car. The radio quietly fills the interior of the car, while there is a comfortable silence between you.
"Are you finally going to tell me where you're going?" you ask again as you glance out of the window at the passing houses.
"You'll see when we get there," he answers your question in the same way again.
You know that you won't get any more out of Adam, so you decide to simply change the subject.
"Have you visited your parents yet?"
"Yes, I landed around five this morning. They picked me up and we had a big breakfast together until I came to see you at ten sharp."
"So everyone, really everyone, was in on the fact that you were coming home, except me?"
"Yep."
A glance to your left shows you that a cheeky grin has spread across his face, causing you to sigh softly.
A few minutes later, Adam puts on the blinker and drives into the empty parking lot of the ice rink where Adam did his first laps on the ice and played his first training sessions and games as a player.
"Ice skating then? I guess you never give your skates a little break."
In fact, there were few days in your friendship when Adam didn't wear skates, so somehow watching field hockey was just as much a part of it for you.
By now you were quite a pro when it came to watching hockey, so you knew all the technical terms and occasionally impressed the odd youngster.
By now, hockey was also part of your passion, but it wasn't nearly as big as Adams, but every now and then you turned on the TV to watch your best friend on the ice.
"No, you know me."
Adam and you get out and make your way towards the entrance, pretty sure the rink might be closed.
Every now and then there was figure skating or ice hockey, but most of the week the rink was closed, so there were no days when it was open for recreational skating.
"It doesn't look like the rink is open" you say your thoughts out loud as you lean your face against the window and look into the empty interior of the rink, where you can't see a single person.
"Good thing I have a key" Adam replies with a broad grin on his lips and starts jingling the key he is holding in his hand.
"How did you get it? Bob doesn't give the key to anyone!"
You look at Adam, almost stunned, as he inserts the key into the door and unlocks it.
Bob was the owner and coach of the hockey team at the time, while his wife Holly trained the figure skaters.
The rink was literally their baby and Bob never let anyone into the rink unsupervised.
"I do. And now I owe him a favor." Adam gently puts his hand on your back and pushes you inside the hall.
"What kind of favor?" you ask curiously as Adam closes the door behind you and then climbs behind the counter to find the right skates for you.
You've been on the ice with Adam a few times before, but while Adam was literally gliding across the ice in his skates, you were just hanging around the edge.
"I'm going to teach his team tomorrow and teach him a few tricks. I guess he wants to bring more of them to the nhl."
Adam hands you a pair of skates, which you sit down on the bench with and start to take off your shoes.
"I really can't miss this. I'll stand in the front row and watch everything carefully, and when you're done I'll be your bodyguard to get you back to the car in one piece."
Determined, you look over at Adam, who shakes his head with a laugh and then sits down next to you on the bench.
"Thanks, I really appreciate that, but I think I'm more of a bodyguard for you than you are for me."
"Hey, don't underestimate my muscles Fantilli!" you reprimand him and tense your biceps, which not only makes Adam laugh, but also you.
"You can't swear me in with that," Adam snorts as he gently touches your biceps with his index finger.
And he's actually right. You're not really active in sports, apart from your jogging laps, which you probably do twice a month when the going gets tough.
"Okay, okay. I got it."
Pouting, you slip into your skates and start to lace them up.
"Ready for a few laps on the ice?"
Adam holds out his hands to help you up, which you take gratefully and feel a light electric shock shoot through your body.
"I'm going to be a loser again. I've forgotten everything again," you mumble sheepishly as you and Adam walk hand in hand over to the gang.
"Luckily, you've got a pro by your side," Adam replies as he steps onto the ice shortly afterwards and takes a turn on the ice, while you slowly put one foot after the other on the ice and claw into the boards, trying not to lose your balance.
Carefully, you try to place one foot after the other to move a little further away from the part of the board where you are currently standing.
But somehow you had forgotten all the basics you had learned back then
"Do you need help? Would you like me to get you a child's aid?" Adam comes to stand next to you with a cheeky grin and points to little penguin figures that help children learn to skate.
"Adam," you growl quietly as you remove one hand from the railing to swat at your best friend, who laughs and dodges.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he starts to apologize and raises his hands. "Let me help you."
Adam moves a little closer to you so that you can smell his aftershave again.
"It's actually quite simple," he begins as he stands behind you and carefully places his hands on your hips. "I'll show you how to do it now."
Slowly, Adam begins to explain the steps to you, while at the same time helping you to carry them out.
He is so close to you that you suddenly get quite nervous and start to sweat. While you try to listen to Adam explain the steps to you, you try not to pay too much attention to his touch and the feelings he triggers in you.
It wasn't the first time Adam's touch had triggered various reactions in you, as you had realized a while ago that you had fallen in love with your best friend.
However, you had thought that these feelings would disappear on their own since Adam had been in Columbus. But in fact, the feelings had become stronger and stronger, so you had to admit to yourself that you had fallen in love with Adam.
It scared you, because you didn't know whether Adam felt the same way about you or whether you were reading too much into it and could end up losing your best friend, so you tried to suppress these feelings as best you could.
"You're doing great! And now drive over to my place on your own!" Adam praises you and you realize that you and Adam have broken away from the gang and are now almost in the middle.
You've been so absorbed in your thoughts that you haven't even noticed.
Adam removes his hands from your hips and positions himself slightly away from you before sticking his thumb out at you to give you the signal to get going.
You slowly go over the steps you've picked up in your head and slowly and carefully put one foot in front of the other.
And you have the feeling of more or less floating over the ice.
Every now and then you start to wobble a little, but you try to balance it out as best you can.
Slowly, you lift your eyes from the ground and look over at Adam, who is watching you with a proud grin.
"You're doing great!" he calls out to you, causing the heat to rise in your cheeks and you suddenly only see Adam and block out everything around you.
You imagine running over to him, letting yourself fall into his arms and kissing him shortly afterwards. Your heart begins to pound in your chest as you realize how nervous you are becoming.
And shortly afterwards, you start to lose your balance and sway, so that you start to panic and flail your arms to regain your balance.
"I've got you, it's all right" seconds later, you hear Adam's familiar voice behind you and feel his arms on your body, stopping you from kissing the ground.
"Thanks," you mumble sheepishly as you feel the heat start to rise in your cheeks and you're sure you're going to blush any second.
Adam looks down at you as you lift your gaze slightly to look up at him.
Your breathing starts to quicken as Adam's hand goes to your cheek and his cold fingers touch your warm skin.
"Y/n," he begins as he moves closer to you and you begin to feel his warm breath on your skin. "I want to kiss you so much, but I'm afraid I'll ruin everything between us."
The sentence makes your heart start to pound even faster against your chest and you feel like Adam could hear it.
"Adam," you whisper softly as you get a little closer to him and your hands slowly find their way to his neck, where they intertwine.  "Kiss me."
It takes a little courage to say those two words, but when they're finally out, you couldn't be happier to have finally thawed out after all these years.
And shortly afterwards, Adam's lips are on yours. Tentatively, he kisses you, while at this moment it's just the two of you and a friendship has finally developed into love. And nothing will separate you any time soon.

Late night walks
-Kamden x reader-
Warning: none, just pure fluff
Author's note: Here's a little headcanon I thought of :))
Just enjoy our pou <3
°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□°□
The best way to make kamden's heart go crazy is to spend time with you, but particularly late night walks get a special place there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright so Kamden and you had been going out for a while establishing a really nice and stable relationship
You guys relied on each other a lot, because communication is crucial and sexy
He felt so loved and appreciated by you he swore he could almost taste the sweetness dripping out from your words
Quality time was his favourite love language, so going on little dates was a must for him, specially indoor dates
But he also enjoyed those were you went to places not too crowded
Almost keeping you as his treasure, not wanting to expose you to the world
His favourite date was particularly late night walks through your neighbourhood
He just texted you really late, knowing well you were probably watching some series or a film
And once you were okay with him coming he was literally at your door in like 15 minutes or less, he wasn't gonna waste any time seeing his beloved one <3
So once you got ready and had put on a hoodie and a jacket properly you both went on your little adventures
You walked hand in hand in a peaceful silence, don't needing any words to describe how well it felt to be in each other's company there
You stopped in your tracks once you saw a swing and went to it immediately like a child, making kamden melt internally from cuteness
He swinged you while he just admired how you laughed almost childishly, and if there was another swing available he would also sat there and rocked himself a little
Once you got bored you just went to a bench and talked about anything that came to your mind
Actually these were your favourite talks, 3 am being the time were your brain got more creative and deep
So the conversations took another turn and left you to express yourselves in your most fred form
And you bet you were cuddling
Of course you were
He couldn't keep his hands to himself right there
Needing warmth at such late hours made you both get tangled and piece perfectly like a puzzle
You placing your head on his chest and just curling up made his heart fuzzy
He also loved to be like that because he sensed from your sudden smile that you could hear his quick heartbeat, making you see how much he loved you and how much of an effect you had on him
Yeah, these were definitely our little pou's best moments with his significant other ❤️

The great thing about Fred the Vampire Accountant is that being an accountant is extremely relevant to his life. It's not like "Here's the adventures of Fred and also his job is accounting"; the accounting plays a very important role in his life and decisions. A decent chunk of text is dedicated to talking about the accounting business he started and how his adventures interfere with his job. He saved the most powerful dragon in America money on his taxes. He loves spreadsheets.

The Sunnydale Herald Newsletter, Friday, January 5
WILLOW: Faith, wait. I want to talk to you. FAITH: Oh yeah? Give me the speech again, please. Faith, we're still your friends. We can help you. It's not too late. WILLOW: It's way too late. You know, it didn't have to be this way. But you made your choice. I know you had a tough life. I know that some people think you had a lot of bad breaks. Well, boo hoo! Poor you. You know, you had a lot more in your life than some people. I mean, you had friends in your life like Buffy. Now you have no one. You were a Slayer and now you're nothing. You're just a big selfish, worthless waste. (Faith punches Willow in the jaw and she falls to the ground.) FAITH: You hurt me, I hurt you. I'm just a little more efficient. (Willow climbs back to her feet.) WILLOW: Aw, here I just thought you didn't have a come-back. FAITH: You're begging for some deep pain. WILLOW: I'm not afraid of you.

Superman's kids ranked
Hmm guess the bottom is where I start here (please note I have not been able to read the dailies)
Wait. Actually there's a few unranked kids, so first a pre-ranking ranking:
Unranked (+ "Superman's" kids)
Superman-Red's Twins and Superman-Blue's Twins: they just kind of exist. They don't have any characterization at all since they don't even talk
Carl (Mr. Mxyptlk): He does a little trolling. I feel a bit bad for Larissa Lenox though
twins in Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #55: no. I don't want to think about this story.
Mooki: this isn't superman. He's neat. Robot Merkid
Lyle and Lili: that's not Lois and that's not Kal-El, it's actually his cousin and a lookalike
Superman Jr (Robin (Fred Ashley (Dick Grayson))): i uh wha. Hmm I think I'll rate him exclusively from the story. Anyways it's basically Lois pranking Superman back via blackmailing Robin (she was pretty sure Robin was one of 6 people). Uh Funny and weird I guess but that's what happens when you prank each other via pretend space travel.
Clark Jr. & Lori (Man of Tomorrow #15): they're literally demons. Anyways they're kinda bland because it's "picturesque traditional American values" that are directly opposed to Superman being more due to what they are. (also RIP Post-crisis Lana, the other main Lanas are simply built different; but also it was Neron so ...). At least Clark Jr. wanted to leave smallville
son & daughter w/Lana Lang (Action Comics #492) : R.I.P. you nonexistent kids. You seemed nice
Lois Lane's son from her coma dream (Showcase #9): uhh what a strange character to rate. So I'm just not going to. idk Superman was trying to get Lois to wake up by making her unhappy so it's weird
Orna Kal-El: alan moore did not write orna at all. She just shows up and says no lines.
Van-El: "I don't think you're real" doesn't hit as hard in the comic. Also he's kinda bland.
Extra note on the black mercy thing:why ISN'T Lyla Lerrol still an actress Moore? Please explain
Richard, M'R'R and K'R'K: nothing characters who also expanded the British empire. this should've ended with K'L'L dismantling the British empire
Twins, with Lois Lane (Adventures of Superman #561): they just sorta exist in Supes's dream. Remind me of the more troublemaker versions of Silver Age twins though (probably a reference since it was a Dominus Effect Epilogue)
Lara Lane Kent (Injustice dream): actually a good character. too bad she's basically the conscience of a man who's basically the worst superman ever.
Martha (Man of Tomorrow #15): She seemed nice despite being fake. At least Clark actually being superman in this fake reality means that she actually gets to do stuff. She wants to go to the moon again. That's it. That's the whole character
onto superman's actual kids;
#55: JLA: Act of God baby; I hate him and everything he stands for
#54: The Others (JLA: Created Equal): Unlike Adam they don't feel sad about being misogynistic and have a change of heart after not during the Luthor fight
#53: Adam Kent: according to the text itself Lex only heightened his misogyny
#52: Kara (and the others) (JLA: Created Equal): She's a girl so she isn't misogynistic. Unfortunately it's weird because she's Power Girl's daughter. seems like a nice person though. these 3 might just be because of me just not vibing with the story but ehh w/e
#51: Lar-El and Vara: these 2 are just kinda really bland. doesn't help that they only show up twice. there's the interesting hook of feeling that Superman abandoned them, but it's too little.
#50: The Twins (World's Finest 35)
Tumblr media
I think this basically sums it up. They're basically used as bratty normal babies that Clark gets annoyed by
#49: Bruce Kent: he exists I guess (will not complain about the story, will not complain about the story, will complain about the story; evil captain marvel is dumb and it's weird how different characters are affected by the apocalypse very differently. also the "we belong together" line hate when they do that, but that's not about Bruce Kent so it's moot). that's pretty much it.
#48: Jonathan Elliott: he exists I guess (will not complain about the story, will not complain about the story, will not). that's pretty much it.
#47: Jonathan Kent (Green Lantern: Darkstars): He exists I guess. has a bit more stuff to him, but he ends up being a good dude despite Belzebeth controlling the darkstars
#46: Lara Kent (Dark Knight/Millerverse): idk her vibes are just off. I like her but then she does something and it's like eugh Frank Miller. and her parents also being OOC does her no favors. Her appearance in the third series made me rank her worse. I do like the thing where she finally touches the ground at the end, but I just really dislike her whole character. At least her dad's more in character in the third one ig. her vibes are off
#45: Jonathan Kent (Future State): he's nice i guess. There just isn't much of him so he's right here. Not a lot of room to be a character when it's just like 5 panels
#44: Jonathan Kent (Space Age): he's nice i guess. Rated slightly higher due to a snowball fight. he doesn't do much
#43: Larry & Carole (Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #36) they don't show up much and don't have much characterization besides only one of them becoming a superhero so not ranking those versions. I guess these two at least have some characterization in that they like playing with the space animals and Larry becomes Superman II
#42: Vol: he's fine he's fine. Besides being a character in one of the most batshit insane superman plots; he's just fine. At least he saved his universe and sent Sonn back to the Earth-One Universe. So uhh points for him I guess? He does a bit more than SGFLL 36 Larry and Carole so he's ranked higher. I guess
#41: Krys Kent: I liked him enough but he kinda has nothing going for him. I guess he has a bit of potential in that he could probably learn magic (he doesn't have powers). He seems nice I guess and he also has the fun line near the beginning of the story after Superman throws him, but that's about it
#40: Krys's evil ghost demon extradimensional twin: The villain has more of a character due to talking more, but really he's just evil for the sake of it. Interesting villain... ... ...I guess evil ghost extradimensional beings don't count for Superman's rules
#39: Jor-El II (Action Comics 327): really wants Clark to stop spoiling his kid. He thinks there's no such thing as crooks anymore (he's wrong), but he's always on missions doing Superman stuff I guess. there must be a lot of natural disasters I guess.
#38: Baby Bliss: toddler written during the silver age. At least he helps Clark a bit although most of the time Kal is just confused about the situation and Baby Bliss sometimes does some trickery to Superman. So I'm ranking him near the middle
#37: Lola Kent: points docked for getting with her cousin. Other than that she's good, since she has very similar characterization to pre-crisis superman, who is a pretty good character. but yeah she's down here because of Jimmy Jr. She'd probably be higher if it wasn't for Lucy Lane
#36: Jor-El II: he is a victim. this happened because his mom was a jerk and honestly I'm not sure if Lois really got through to Lois. There's also probably a better way to get through your alternate universe self who's tired of being a housewife. At least his dad was nice the whole time and even apologized about always leaving for missions. Jor-El II's life sucks and I'm not convinced it gets better. ranks low since I didn't really get anything for his characterization
#35: Clark Kent Jr (Superman #404): seems like a nice kid who loves his parents. I like the bit where Lana makes Clark Jr makes Clark gets ice cream but there's really not much here. I will say this was a very interesting imaginary story that I wouldn't mind being expanded on
#34: Superman II (Jorel Kent): he only appears in 3 Superman 2020 stories so he doesn't have much. He really is Superman II. there's not much differentiating himself from his father. Kalel has more going on just because Superman 2020 is about Kalel and not Jorel.
#33: Superman Jr. (Denny O'Neil): He's dead now. Denny O'Neil's take was weird. Still liked him though. He tried heroing even though he caused disasters everywhere he went. I guess he self-sacrificed himself for the good of reality
#32: Joel Perry Kent: He is also a victim because of Ultra Humanite. Idk I think Clark is also at fault here; just tell the dude. However him trying to kill the Vietnamese village is all on him. It doesn't say that Ultra-humanite told him to do it sooo.
#31: Jonathan Kent (Frank Millerverse): he's fine I guess. He felt like the imaginary story kids or silver age superman when he was fighting Darkseid so he ranks a bit higher. like when the supers are like tricksters
#30: Larry (Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #39): He is a bit of a scamp so that's great. He does cause Jimmy to go blind and Lana to breathe fire though, but then again Clark didn't explain the black magic to anyone in the family so really that was Superman's fault.
#29: Superman Jr (World's Finest #154 & #157): started as bit of a jerk to Bruce Jr but basically mellowed out. Since he's only in 2 comics there's not much characterization here and his dynamic with his Bruce Jr isn't as great as the Bob Haney version
#28: Kara Kent: Honestly kinda bland. She has a sweet relationship with Bruce Jr, but that's basically it. Like she has half the powers of Superman and complains about it a few times, but that's really par for the course of biological superman kids. Has a bit more of stuff in Generations 2, but nothing really to make her go higher or lower on this list
#27: Supergirl (Ariella Kent)/R'E'L, the Destroyer of Worlds: reading the dc one million issue again it's not bad but the comedy doesn't land as much as it wants to. despite her crying in that one scene I just don't like her as much as the others unfortunately :/
#26: Johny Kirk (Superman Jr): Nice kid, unfortunate circumstances though. Also his ending was horrible. Where does he even live now. Like he totally should've stayed being adopted by Superman
#25: Tommy: he's just a little guy and unlike almost everyone else that's main canon, he gets a happy ending. Clark could and should check on him from time to time though. Also since he's powerless I find him more interesting than Johny
#24: Jonathan Kent II (Kingdom Come): All things considered he's pretty cool. Most of it is due to cribbing Phantom Stranger's style but he's alright. Do like how he has Hypertime powers; But other than that he's kind of just the monitor from COIE
#23 Larry and Carole* (Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #23): basically more subdued versions of the twins with lady luck, so they're less fun but also they don't seem to purposefully mess with their parents like their earlier counterparts. They also have belts that can be switched on/off to stop them from having superpowers so that's interesting. They're fights also seem more playful than anything
#22::Jonathan Samuel Kent: there's a lot I do NOT like about him but there's lots of good bits and pieces. I unfortunately have to concede that he's not the worst jon.
#21: Twins, with "Lady Luck" in Superman #131: the twins are menaces. But in a fun way. They keep on fighting and messing with each other (& their parents). It's great
#20: Joan Kent: I liked her enough, Liked how she tried to trick Larry at first, although unfortunately that doesn't work and she kinda spends the whole story kidnapped by Ironclaws. I do like how she argued with Larry while Larry was evil, though it seems like they had a soft spot for each other even before Larry turned good. but she ultimately doesn't do much so I had to rank her lower. If it was more of a Joan story than a Lois story she might be ranked higher
#19: Clark Kent Jr/Superman Jr/Superboy (Superman #192 & 194): I liked him more in 192 where he was a bit more mischievous, and then started talking in gigantic words, but he was fine in 194 as well. He was even able to outsmart Lex Luthor. He'd probably be higher if he stayed more mischievous or was still using gigantic words in his vocabulary. I do really like this imaginary story plot though.
#18: Jor-El II/Nightwing (Superman #166): Good character but not as good as his brother, he's basically a kid Superman but he doesn't feel as developed as Clark Superboy. That's probably why they focused more on his brother. He teased Kal-El II at the beginning a bit too much, but he basically stops after Clark tells him to stop
#17: Pyrrhos: Pretty good villain all things considered. don't like that he was the one who killed Darkseid but that's because I read Kirby's New Gods. I liked him enough
#16: Clark Kent Jr./Superman Jr. (Bob Haney): He's great. His dynamic with Bruce Jr. is also great. He's more optimistic and more of a reader than Bruce Jr. I feel like Clark Jr is like a more hotheaded Clark. Even at their most confrontational Batman Jr. and Superman Jr remain friends. points docked a bit due to not really existing without Bruce Jr. He does have a bit of an inferiority complex ("generation gap") due to only being about half as strong as Superman so characterization bonus
#15: Cir-El is neat; the whole weird Mia thing was not. But it's ok cause I'm ranking his kids not his not kids. Kinda suffers for only being in like 13 issues, but i enjoyed her existence while she was there. Like how she kept on thinking of Superman (and Lois) as her parents even after the truth was revealed
#14 Lara Lane Kent (Adventures of Superman #638): liked what little there was of her. She seems like a neat character. Best part was the Calvin and Hobbes homage.
#13 Kal-El II/Flamebird/Kalel Kent (Superman #166): Good character, having no powers while your brother and dad do, gives ample reason for an inferiority complex. I also like how it showed he was a bit smarter due to him deciding to read more books and studying which wouldn't have happened without his inferiority complex about no powers. Also like how he kept messing up with the secret identity bit by accidentally calling Nightwing Jor when they were in Kandor
#12: Laura Kent (Superman Family #200): She's neat. Wasn't born with powers but developed them later, but like in the same day. She seems interesting enough. It ends before she can tell her parents she got powers so unfortunately she's not as high as she could be. Good character from what little we see of her though
#11: Super-Baby (Superman #224): EVIL baby. L.E.G.I.ON. ripped off this guy when they cooked with Lyrl. I like how he completely took over the villains' operations once they made themselves known. Guess he wasn't as intelligent as he thought since Superman specifically booby trapped the springs which was how to make the actual puzzle. Fun villain; just a normal baby know though
#10: Carol and Jane Kent (Secret Identity): only show up as actual characters in the last issue, but it does a decent amount building them up in how their similarities and differences to their dad. Them being less scared than Clark makes sense since they had each other.
#9: Zod (DCAU/A Better World): I actually like this kid quite a bit. Neat powers is a bonus as well. when they focused on him it was actually quite an enjoyable read
#8: Jon Kent (Son of Superman): I actually really like this Jon. He's also kinda funny sometimes. He kinda reminds me of what current Jonathan Samuel was TRYING to be but actually succeeding. It helps that the world he lives in is like our current world but a bit worse. (Some of the characters in the elseworlds feel OOC but other than that I like the story). Jon's just a good character all around.
#7: Osul-Ra & Otho-Ra: these two are pretty close in ranking since sometimes I like Otho more and sometimes I like Osul more, so I'll just put them in the same section. Depending on how other writers write them they may move up (or down). Osul has the Old God stuff while Otho has the more brash stuff.
#6: Lisa Kent/Superlass (Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #91): I just like her as a character. She's nice and a bit brash at times, but honestly all around she seems to just want to help. despite the imaginary story having the end and feeling like a tragedy, it feels more hopeful than certain other stories here. She probably should've asked Lois if she wanted to be cured first though
#5: Kara (Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane #20): Honestly this one was just a tragedy of miscommunication, but also Kara and Kal DID ignore Lois a lot which while understandable, but uh yeah. Honestly I blame Lois having to quit her job and the midvale investigator mainly. Kara's basically mainline Kara here, which unfortunately includes the not being adopted (yet) part
#4: Laney (Superman 215): I feel like Laney has more Lois than previous lois kids with superman so she's ranked higher. She's more impatient and curious. She also kinda sorta gets a happy ending though she and clark are mourning and going through grief the whole time. ...I hope other Lois doesn't feel bad about this whole situation, but that's not me ranking Superman's kids. That's me talking about the story
#3: Christopher Kent: Yeah he's great. He's just a really nice kid, who has trauma and also has a bit of trouble fitting in. His age up while weird at least gave him cool powers... eventually. And also I think they fixed it? Mon-El taking him under his wing at the finale was neat too. Bring the actual him back
#2: Jonathan Lane Kent: I wasn't expecting to like him so much. He really develops as a character. and eventually could even be called a hero. Plus the only reason he was even evil in the first place was because he was raised young by Harvest so him eventually actually being a hero makes sense. Weird character though
#1: Gregor Nagy: I actually really like his one and done story. bring him back.
Also:
Tumblr media
this is why he's peak. It's ultimately about not feeling like you fit in the world. bonus points for having a completely different power set that's also cool
#0: Jimmy Olsen. obviously. I will have to say Superman was a jerk due to a misunderstanding but Jimmy being the GOAT that he is doesn't mind not being Superman's son. And despite not having a happy ending as a superman son, he does gain/regain 2 other dads

Courtesy of @kchasm: Neil Cicierega does not have has a Ryu Number. However, Spock, The Rock, Doc Ock, and Hulk Hogan do.
(CORRECTION: Per @possqueen, Neil Cicierga cameos as an alligator in Later Alligator alongside Arin Hanson, giving him a Ryu Number of 3.)
(explanation below)
"Spock's Ryu Number of 3 was already established, but this alternate route circumvents the text adventure game Landing Party. Note that the Star Trek Timelines incarnation of Amelia Earhart is the "actual" Earhart, and not a holodeck rendition - in Star Trek lore, Earhart and Fred Noonan were abducted by aliens in 1937 and placed in suspended animation until 2371."

Probably observations that have been made by plenty of people over the last century, but:
Fascinating how the Evil and Unnatural control that Dracula wields over people, is mirrored against the Good and Natural control of men over women; the rich over the poor; the British over backwards and savage foreigners; doctors over the insane.
Fascinating how much the Jonathan's Spooky Castle Adventure segment is subtextally about the horror of feminization. On the obvious level of being subject to sexual violence, sure, but also on the level of being trapped in a domestic space that you're not allowed to leave. The person who's the greatest threat to you is the also the person you've been made absolutely dependant on. You have to keep up a cheerful facade, play along with his social games, and pretend to be too stupid to realize you're a prisoner, if you want any hope of survival.
Fascinating how much the rest of the (surface level) text is dedicated to frantically backtracking that (early, subtextal) insight. The Heteropatriarchal Gender Order is actually the greatest thing in the word! Look how rosy and wholesome the scooby gang polycule is! (Again, our cute jokey pseudo-polygamy is mirrored against their barbarous 3 brides). Yet all the while, the inherent grotesqueness of these relations can't help bleeding through the sentimental trappings - the "euthanasia is such a beautiful word" bit springs to mind
Fascinating how our Three Heroes are, respectively, representatives of The Psychiatric Order, The British Nobility, and American Colonial Expansion (Quincy specifically gets congratulated on the recent Texan secession from Mexio). Fascinating how Dracula and Van Helsing never actually face off directly - everything is mediated through Mina, and it all comes down to a brainwash-off to see who can control her better.
Fascinating how Jonathan's feminization narrative is also haunted by the specter of institutionalization (via the Renfield subplot, which barely ties in with the main story on a surface level). It's not the horrors themselves that affect him the most - it's not being able to trust his own perceptions. (It's the idea that if he really had been "mad," then his imprisonment would have been justified).
Fascinating that the book later goes to great pains to show that he's Regained His Manly Vigour And Has A Knife Now, yet his emasculation still clings to him in the Dracula-based cultural consciousness: he's composited with Renfield to keep that emasculation from infecting the hero in the 30s; he's the unappealing weak prettyboy of the 90s love triangle; he's Shaggy in the scooby gang (unrelated to the Serious Analysis, but it is deeply funny how obvious the Velma=Mina/Daphne=Lucy/Fred=Arthur inspo is now).
Fascinating how much the ultimate question of the book is "What's the Right way to do gender? (and therefore do whiteness/Britishness/patriarchy/colonialism/capitalism?) The answer, apparently, is that both sexes should aspire to a "a woman's brain and a man's heart" - Mina's man-brain, and the Five Guys' woman-sensitivity - while still dutifully playing the roles of their "natural" power dynamic. The obvious inverse is a woman's brain with a man's heart - and is that not Dracula and his "child brain;" the brides and their "cold hard voluptuousness"?
Fascinating to read Mina and Jonathan as effectively the same character (with Mina picking up the gender-power themes Jonathan left off, in a more socially-acceptable vessel). Fascinating how strong the religious cognitive dissonance is throughout. And of course, the whole thing is drenched with Bram Stoker sending some gay little letters to Walt Whitman (as every single victorian gay guy apparently did), then seeing the Oscar Wilde trial and Freaking Out

There's a predator cult out there
When Arizona enters Reine City in Chapter 1, you can go into a house where the reindeer inside complain about scary noises in their basement, and one of them gives you the key to the basement assuming you're the person they hired to take care of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you go in there you're immediately trapped by predators, and you end up discovering the basement is part of a larger underground complex. Going to the right first leads you into a room with a doll that's described as "really old," and continuing has Arizona enter the Reine City sewers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuing upwards leads you towards the Altar of Appetence, which proceeds to open and out comes a bear and several other predators. You do canonically defeat them, but going up to the now-closed altar and interacting with it has Arizona mention concern over the fact she can't wait around for it to open again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later on in the Temple of the Ancestors there's yet another one, the Altar of Esurience, which has Arizona battle a similar set of predators and causing the altar to close.
Tumblr media
Now, the AoE, while out of place thematically, at least seems to match the stonework and color of the surrounding themple. The same can't be said about the AoA, which has the exact same style but in a modern sewer setting.
Here's my theory: someone put it there not too long ago, and the same thing probably goes for the one at the Temple.
Think about it, the predators were banished at the very least over a thousand years ago. Reine City on the other hand has no records of being as old as that. If the altars were from the time predators got banished, the reindeer building the sewer system would've stumbled upon the AoA and either moved it elsewhere for research/display (they have a large museum of history and art, after all) or deliberately destroyed/buried it, they wouldn't have left it perfectly centered and positioned in a large spare room.
Texas' story has accompanying images, and they show ungulates opening a dimensional rift in the sky to banish the predators, there's no mention nor depiction of them using the altars to accomplish this.
Tumblr media
There's also the fact they have morbid names that only the players get to see. They're not "mysterious altar" or "strange rock" or even "????", they've got concrete titles revolving around hunger.
Tumblr media
Their locations are perfect for maximizing the carnage predators will cause once they escape. The one under Reine City is accessed through the basements of civilian buildings, and flavor text in the game's official site mentions the Temple of the Ancestors is a popular destination for archaeologists, adventurers and grave robbers.
Tumblr media
Outside of sheep dogs (which are definitely not behind this) and maybe Fred, there's no confirmation there's any group of predators that are still around in Foenum, which means that, whoever put those altars where they did, were definitely ungulates. For what purpose? Who knows, maybe to convince predators to give them power, or some fantasy version of ecofascism, or maybe just plain old doomsday cult-esque beliefs.

Hey Mel! how are you doing today angel? Anything on your mind today?
hey there love! definitely got a very specific scenario on my mind today. i had my baby nephew stay with me this weekend and while i love him more than life, i am SO EFFINNNN TIRED. but it also inspired some thoughts...
so lip drops fred off with ian and mickey so he can take tami for a much needed night out. ian and mickey are ready to roll with games and toys and snacks... but by god, all this kid wants is baby shark. he won’t do anything without those fucking sharks in the background. lip texts ian a link to an hour long baby shark compliation - freddie is happy as a clam, but mickey is ready to put his head through the wall at 6 minutes in. they sit through:
baby shark
baby monkey
baby t-rex
baby shark robots
baby sharkcito
baby car
baby shark cheerleaders
baby shark but they’re all finger puppets?
baby shark EDM club remix
“super kind police sharks” - mickey is livid ahjksdf
baby shark bus (???)
baby shark but they’re all puzzle pieces
baby shark valentine’s day remix
ian mostly manages to tune it out while coloring with fred, but mickey is beside himself. by the time they get to the one where they’re on some kind of jungle adventure, mickey has had ENOUGH. they’re sharks??? where is this underwater jungle? how are they swinging from trees?? where did these ocean monkeys come from? why are they trying to escape that lion instead of fucking eating him? WHY are they fleeing the goddamn crocodile IN A BOAT? THEY’RE FUCKING SHARKS IAN??????? JUST SWIM AWAY YOU FUCKING IDIOTS?
that’s when ian decides it’s time for both fred and mickey to have a nap. the rest of the night goes well enough...... but then. in the days following their babysitting adventures, ian will not. stop. humming!!! it’s baby shark when he’s cooking dinner, baby shark when he’s driving to work, baby shark when he’s watering the plants. mickey draws the fucking line when they’re in the shower together and ian’s going “doo doo doo doo” while he lathers up mickey’s hair. get out. STOP THIS.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Spoiler-Filled Review
Tumblr media
Star Trek: Lower Decks is a mature animation which combines elements of the adventure, comedy, and sci-fi genres. Series creator Mike McMahan is known as a co-creator of Solar Opposites, a producer on Rick and Morty and as a consulting producer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This is the ninth series in the Star Trek franchise and second Star Trek animated series after Star Trek: The Animated Series ended in 1974.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the fifty-sixth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on November 30, 2023. PCM editor Jean Henegan she said she added some content "since I'm a massive Trek nerd/fan, I added a bit of context around some of the things you pointed out...and cleaned up a couple of things that weren't quite accurate...Nice piece, overall." I have incorporated those additions here. Most of the text is the same as what I submitted on November 28th.
This animated series, which has aired for three seasons, takes a different tact than previous Star Trek series. It focuses on lower-ranked officers who engage in menial labor, known as lower deckers. Others are supporting characters. Star Trek: Lower Decks focuses on Starfleet, the military and exploration division of the United Federation of Planets, in the 24th century. It is tasked with establishing contact with races across the galaxy using a ship no one cares about: the USS Cerritos.
Four lower deckers are protagonists: Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, and Sam Rutherford. They are voiced by Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero. Four others are recurring characters: captain of the Cerritos (Carol Freeman), first officer Jack Ransom, tactical officer Shaxs, and head medical doctor T’Ana. Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman voice these characters. All are well-known voice actors.
This series stands out because of its animation style, comedy, plot, and characters. Mariner is a big part of this. Her romantic relationships became a big part of the series, especially in the third season, when she is dating Jennifer Sh'reyan (voiced by Lauren Lapkus). Like actual relationships, they don't stay together, partially because Jennifer does not stand by her. She abandons Mariner when many on the Cerritos incorrectly think she is a traitor. Mariner is bisexual or pansexual. Previously, she dated Steve Levy. She tells Tendi, in a season two episode, that she dated "bad boys, bad girls, bad gender non-binary babes, [and] ruthless alien masterminds." She dated Amina Ramsey (voiced by Toks Olagundoye) while at Starfleet Academy. McMahan stated that "every Starfleet officer is probably at the baseline bisexual" and that there was no intention for "anybody to be strictly heteronormative or straight or cis."
Unfortunately, this is rarely explored in Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4. There are some romantic vibes between Mariner and T’Lyn (voiced by Gabrielle Ruiz), a fellow crewmember on the Cerritos (who also happens to be Vulcan), in the fourth episode. They care for each other (as much as a Vulcan can care, with their repressed emotions), especially after knives keep stabbing Mariner during the episode. In the episode after, T’Lyn calms down Mariner’s emotions after her fever causes everyone’s emotions on the Cerritos to go out of control. In another episode, Mariner enjoys being kissed by a guy. Otherwise, her development during the season revolves around her promotion to a higher rank and ramifications of that decision. Although she is still part of “lower decks,” she is now a junior grade lieutenant, which makes her uneasy.
Boimler and Rutherford get closer, especially after the fourth episode. They even solve a disagreement by dressing up as Mark Twain and talking on a simulated steamboat. Both struggle with their promotions, although in different ways than Mariner. For instance, Boimler gets his first mission as commander and attempts to do everything himself. With some prodding from T’Lyn, he ends up sacrificing himself to save everyone and is later brought back to life. Rutherford also tries to find his place on the ship following his promotion. The closeness between Boimler and Rutherford has led some to ship them together. After all, in the eighth episode, Boimler doesn’t mind taking off his pants when Rutherford asks. Presently, there are less than 20 fics shipping them. Comparably, there’s over 120 fics for the Marinler ship (Mariner and Boimler). The latter has a small chance of canonization as compared to the Rutherford/Boimler ship.
Otherwise, there are wild plotlines, whether about Betazoid “diplomats” (actually undercover intelligence officers) with a hidden agenda who almost bring the Cerritos into the neutral zone where Romulans await battle, a fake marriage between Tendi and Rutherford, or megalomaniacal A.I. – known as Badgey – trying to get revenge. In the case of the latter, the A.I. comes out of the Daystrom Institute on Earth, returning following its initial appearance in season two. In the time between the seasons, it was imprisoned in a penitentiary holding other A.I. of a similar nature.  His plans are foiled when he realizes that ultimate power is too much. The plans of two A.I., Peanut Hamper and Aegus, also fail after they realize that killing others isn’t worth it. Both commit to reforming their selves, so they aren’t evil anymore.
The depiction of A.I. in Star Trek: Lower Decks is somewhat similar to the rogue A.I. in Futurama's Season 8 Part One, or near-planet-destroyer Light Hope in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. It differs from the mixed representation in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Cleopatra in Space, or more positive depictions in My Dad the Bounty Hunter, Kizuna no Allele, and Supa Team 4. This matters considering social media rumblings that some actors will not vote for the recent contract between SAG-AFTRA and the Hollywood studios due to reportedly subpar A.I. provisions [Note: The previous line was removed from the PCM version.]
Throuhgout the season, there are also scenes with spoken poetry, a bar fight (started by Mariner, naturally), and an instance of Boimler getting addicted to a Ferengi television series. There’s even a funny episode where everyone recounts their experiences about being stuck in a cave with different Starfleet officers. However, it’s the journey that Mariner takes over the course of the season that truly hits home as the season comes to a close. Following her promotion Mariner struggles to be a leader, desperate to keep bucking command. How can you be rebellious against the command structure when you are part of it? She asks herself this question, trying to determine what her purpose within Starfleet is. It isn’t until the close of the season that she truly understands who she is and why she is so hesitant to take on more responsibility.
In that episode, Captain Freeman is worried about Mariner. She’s unsure why Mariner is taking risks and trying to get herself killed. She orders Mariner’s friends to distract her. This backfires. Mariner, along with T’Lyn, Tendi, and Boimler, all teleport to a planet surface before their ship is destroyed. When they admit they are worried about her, and reveal the Captain’s order, she is unhappy. She agrees to stay with them until she slips out during the night. In the process, she bonds with a Klingon, who tells her what no one has stated directly: she’s at war with herself.
youtube
This is only part of Mariner’s attempted self-examination. It is akin to Yor Forger asking herself why she is an assassin in episode 33 of Spy x Family, lingering doubts of Teru Momijiyama / Shy in Shy about her reasons for being a hero, or Sora Harewata-ru / Cure Sky wondering why she hesitates to fight the Undergu empire in episode 42 of Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure. Mariner reveals she is partially in Starfleet to honor Sito, a friend from her time at Starfleet Academy who died a senseless death several years earlier, which makes her continue to question Starfleet’s mission. She admits that while she doesn’t hate Starfleet, she tried to get out of a promotion. She believes Starfleet should solve the puzzles of life, not start wars (which could violate the Prime Directive). As she tells the Klingon, she doesn’t want to send her friends off to die. She wants to be an ensign and nothing more.
Ma’ah (voiced by Jon Curry), the Klingon, suggests that she honor her friend, slay her enemies, and study to be better. In response, she hugs him, rather than fighting him, and says they should work together. The episode hints at her future leadership, possibly in Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5. She rallies everyone together in a rousing speech. Unfortunately, she is kidnapped by “Nicholas” Nick Locarno (who, like Sito, previously appeared in live action in Star Trek: The Next Generation and were once again portrayed – in voice over – by their live action actors Robert Duncan McNeil – who also starred on Star Trek: Voyager – and Shannon Fill), who beams her up into a mysterious ship – a ship that has been “destroying” various species’ ships throughout the season. Thanks to her efforts, Boimler, T’Lyn, and Tendi, along with new allies, destroy a Klingon warbird. They are disappointed that Mariner isn’t aboard.
The Season 4 finale ends with a bang, as it turns out that ships “destroyed” across the galaxy have joined the renegade Nova Fleet/Squadron. It resembles the rag-tag rebel fleet in Star Wars Rebels. There’s a major difference: Nick is willing to engage in terrorism, i.e., threat or use of violence to cause panic or intimidate, especially as a method to affect political conduct, as defined in the Third Pocket Edition of Black’s Law Dictionary. Mariner easily stops this. She calls out Nick as selfish and brainless, then steals a genesis device, which can destroy planets.
Captain Freeman shows her dedication to her daughter, and to the well-being of her crew. She goes to extreme lengths to rescue Mariner. After a failed contest on her homeworld of Orion, Tendi agrees to work for her pirate sister, D’Erika (voiced by Ariel Winter), so they can get a battleship. They use the decrepit warship to smash through the barrier. It creates a hole big enough for the captain’s yacht to enter. In the process, they save Mariner. Nick is left on her ship after he tries to kill her and activates the genesis device. In a moment of clever dark humor, Nick is destroyed by the device since he can’t pay the money needed to deactivate it (since it is a Ferengi model, of course).
The episode ends with Captain Freeman not court-martialed, T’Lyn refusing to return to her previous ship, and the four protagonists come together for a party in the mess hall. While they party for a short bit, this soon ends, as Tendi feels obligated to fulfill her end of the bargain she made with D’Erika: she must return to a life of piracy alongside D’Erika. Although this depresses Rutherford, neither he, Boimler nor Mariner, stop her from leaving. Tendi prepares herself for what comes next. Undoubtedly, her story will be expanded in Star Trek: Lower Decks fifth season, which was in production as of March.
As noted earlier, queer representation was lacking in this season, as opposed to previous ones. In the past, I’ve written that the ship engineer, Andy Billups (voiced by Paul Scheer), was possibly asexual. A recent post on treksphere makes the same claims. It argues that Tendi is aromantic, Billups is an asexual icon, and points to possible asexual vibes from Spock, Data, and Odo in the Star Trek franchise – although all three characters have relationships with women at various points in their stories. Such claims are only headcanons, similar to those who believed that Page in Tron: Uprising was asexual. There are no asexual characters in the Star Trek universe, to my knowledge. As such, having a canon asexual character in Star Trek: Lower Decks, outward in their identity like Todd Chavez in Bojack Horseman, would be great.
Asexual representation in animation, and in popular culture, is slim. While Alastor in Hazbin Hotel, Lilith Clawthorne in The Owl House, Peridot in Steven Universe, or Perry the Platypus in Phineas and Ferb, are asexual, they were confirmed off-screen. The same is the case for Spongebob Squarepants and Percival "Percy" King in Epithet Erased. Some have stated that Seiji Maki in Bloom Into You and Shōko Tanimoto in The Case Files of Jeweler Richard are asexual. In a previous review, I noted this was the case for Hime Shiraki in Yuri is My Job!. I've seen social media chatter about the manga which comes to a similar conclusion.
Hopefully, Star Trek: Lower Decks fifth season expands on Mariner‘s personal relationships and her identity, and that of the other protagonists. Undoubtedly, it will retain its mature comedy and quirkiness. All the while the characters will be thrown into conflict-prone situations, a breeding ground for trauma. This is not unique. There are multiple series airing this fall featuring characters in tense and stressful situations, sometimes involving murder of human beings. This includes certain The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess and Spy x Family episodes.
Otherwise, people anonymously described their conditions at Titmouse in a largely-circulated spreadsheet about animation studios. In the spreadsheet, which has 11 entries for the aforementioned animation studio, people praise Titmouse for good pay, flexible and healthy working hours, opportunities for rapid advancement, and good management. Others criticize Titmouse for disorganization, overwork, low pay, and say it is only good for those entering the industry. Clearly, it’s a mixed bag. There are different experiences, depending on each production, if I’m understanding these entries correctly.
In my previous review of Star Trek: Lower Decks, I noted that LGBTQ+ representation is at the heart of the show. I pointed to myriad examples of such representation (and in the franchise), and note that many fan fictions for Mariner are skewed toward men. As such, I still see the interactions between Mariner and Boimler as platonic rather than romantic. I understand how people see them as the latter, shipping them as Marinler, but I see them as good friends, rather than good lovers.
youtube
In the past, this series had some of best queer representation in mature animation. Other examples include RWBY, Disenchantment, Final Space, Bojack Horseman, and Harley Quinn. In season 4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, this was less emphasized. Even so, the series is still moving in an inclusive direction. It isn't like Star Wars: The Bad Batch. That series had "four White men and one person of color, in the main cast," as I wrote in January.
This direction is clear from the cast and crew. Tawny Newsome and Dawnn Lewis, who voice Mariner and Captain Freeman, are both Black women, like their characters. Noël Wells (voice of Tendi) is of Tunisian and Mexican descent. Eugene Cordero (voice of Rutherford) is of Filipino descent. Gabrielle Ruiz is of Mexican descent. Carlos Alazraqui is Latine. Black men such as Marcus Henderson, Phil LaMarr, and Carl Tart also voice characters. There are some White male voice actors, such as Jack Quaid, Jack McBrayer, Jerry O'Connell, Fred Tatasciore, Paul Scheer, and Paul F. Tompkins. White women like Gillian Vigman, Lauren Lapkus, Georgia King, and Jessica McKenna voice characters too. Although, they are not the majority of the main cast, they comprise much of the recurring cast.
Many of these names were familiar. For one, Newsome voiced Jessica Williams in Craig of the Creek, Quaid voiced Clark Kent / Superman in My Adventures with Superman, and Cordero voiced Jamie in Steven Universe. Lewis voiced LaBarbara Conrad in Futurama, Professor Klabrax V in Cleopatra in Space, The Chief/Tamara Fraser in Carmen Sandiego, and Fannie Granger in Spirit Riding Free. LaMarr is best known for voicing Hermes Conrad in Futurama, Virgil Hawkins / Static in Static Shock, and John Stewart / Green Lantern in Justice League, along with Sky Gunderson in Disenchantment.
Alazraquiprominently voiced Puff in The Proud Family (in the reboot/revival) and Skylar in Elena of Avalor. Winter voiced Princess Sofia Cordova for the entire Sofia the First series, in the Elena of Avalor series finale, and in Elena and the Secret of Avalor, a backdoor pilot for Elena of Avalor. Wells, O'Connell, Tataiscore, Scheer, McKenna, McBrayer, Lapkus, Tart, and Tompkins, had assorted voice roles, as well. However, this isn't counting anyone in the guest cast.
In terms of the show's music, the opening and closing themes were good, and it fits with the action. I don't recall any tracks there were necessarily memorable (apart from the opening and closing tracks). So, I'm downgrading the music score for this review. Even so, Chris Westlake did an excellent job as the series composer. The music echoes Star Trek scores in other parts of the franchise. Those who directed, wrote, storyboarded, and animated each episode, including some well-known names like Jamie Loftus, McMahan, and Grace Parra Janney, deserve plaudits for their hard work as well.
I look forward to the fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. I hope that the personal identities of the main cast are explored more in the next season. I'm optimistic that Paramount executives realize the series' value. It would be devastating to have the series cancelled unceremoniously like Star Trek: Prodigy. Netflix recently nabbed that series as part of the streaming wars.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is currently streaming on Paramount+ or for purchase on PrimeVideo.

Still thinking on Scooby Doo and rewrites/remakes and how I mentioned earlier about having the supernatural things be real too and how I wanted things like the Ghoul School and 13 ghosts to be mentioned and decided to expand on this.
I don't have a timeline thought out, so this is more just musing on how those things could be incorporated. Some might be more stuff that happen before the series happens that gets referenced/consequences later.
Like The reluctant Werewolf, Shaggy does racing occasionally as a hobby and still catches the attention of Dracula who needs a werewolf for his monster races. So Shaggy, Scooby, Scrappy, who I don't know quite how would be introduced but maybe it's time to bring him back and get him a second chance, and Shaggy's at the time girlfriend Googie get whisked off and have to race to get Shaggy turned back. When it's all said and done, Scooby and Shaggy immediately tell the guys what happened. Velma's immediately working to make sure Shaggy's back to fully human, if he wants to be of course, Daphne makes a new friend out of Googie, who breaks up mutually with Shaggy later though they remain good solid friends, and Fred wants monster race lessons cause you never know when those skills come in handy. Next time they meet Dracula, Shaggy mentions the incident as way to get Drac's reluctant help, and maybe even has to get turned into a werewolf once more to help solve the current mystery.
Quick side note on Scrappy. Give me this puppy who shows up and upon meeting Scooby calls him Uncle. They might be related, they might not be but they appear to be the same unidentified species of anunnaki descendant/eldrictch being/fae/monster/whatever they are as Scooby and they know Scrappy isn't his son but that's about the extent of it. He's eager, scrappy, and a little reckless but the gang help steer him away from the more dangerous actions. He's not allowed to classes with the gang because he's a puppy, so he's too young and has to stay home a lot, but he still manages to get up to his own adventures. He's good at offering what seems like 'obvious' solutions that the gang missed/overlooked when they're going over cases while he's in the room because he misses a lot of the theatrics they had to deal with.
13 Ghosts: Daphne wants to travel and look into other stories that may lead to creatures they'll encounter and work on a story for the school newspaper, Shaggy and Scooby go along for a chance to try new foods, a break, and to get Scrappy some more world experience. This would happen during some kind of school break, likely summer or winter. A chest accidentally gets opened, ghosts are released, and they meet Flim-Flam, who's still a little scammer and a clever little child that gets on with Scrappy like a house on fire. He introduces them to Vincent Van Ghoul, a warlock who poses as an actor to keep his talents hidden. Vincent assists them, but makes them all swear to keep it under wraps because revealing things like this to the whole world of normal humans maybe dangerous, and would not be the best look for his actor persona, but that's a minor point. They caught 12 of the ghosts, but the 13th evaded them for too long and the gang had to return home. It's Daphne, Scooby, and Shaggy's first experience with ghouls that are more intentionally malicious and consciously choosing to harm people rather than misunderstandings or fear based responses. They can't tell Fred and Velma, though they want to, and the other two take it with grace despite curiosity. Scrappy constantly texts/emails/face times Flim Flam, and Scooby, Shaggy, and Daphne make sure to keep in contact with him as well. All seems well, and like their promise can be kept until that missing 13th ghost starts making trouble, and it's time to finally collect all the ghosts.
I do have more of this, but this is long so I'm splitting it into two posts. I've got Ideas for at least Ghoul School, Zombie Island, and Alien Invaders.

Bill, Charly, Percy and looking for younger siblings based on their astrlogical sign
Another reason that would explain Bill and Charly's relative indifference to parenting their siblings (thought i personnaly headcanon that in childhood Bill had probably help with devotion but in his teenage years he had let down because it wasn't his deep nature) is the astrological sign that JKR gave them, they are sagitarius and sagitarius are independant, adventurous and they had nomadic instincts, they are very easy going and agreable but they had strong independance needs, they may not be at their home very much and they love travels, it doesn't seem the best sign for "second parents" to younger siblings, as it would force them to restraint their nature. On the contrary, Percy is a leo (actually a cusp between leo and virgo, this is fascinating) and this sign is a family one, a very protective one and they love their tribe. As elder sibling, they are loving and protective, thought they are often bossy. I tend to believe JKR based or adjusted her characters's personnality on their astrological signs (or she choose astrological signs that correspond to their personnality) because it had been says that she believed in it, and when you look closely, they all more or less correspond with the personnality traits of their signs. So if Percy feel more a substitute parent than Bill and Charly who are older, it's maybe not by chance. i mean, she gave them the most nomadic sign of the zodiac and one the more family oriented for Percy...
And if we must base on this, he will also be one of the most protective parent of the zodiac!
This is so interesting!
I have never considered zodiac signs for the characters before, but you made excellent points, so I had to look into these signs a little more, and this what I found:
Leo
Confident
Likes Attention
Ambitious
Loyal
Fiercely Protective
Luxury-Loving
Big-Hearted
Hard-Headed
Romantic
Passionate
Sexually (skip if you are a minor) - they tend to be exhibitionists, vocal in bed, & enjoy experimenting, which actually goes along pretty well with my NSFW headcanons for Percy that I wrote in this post.
This describes Percy so well! It also supports things from the text, such as “The Argument” (and Percy wanting more than the life he had), Percy’s reluctance to return home, the fact that he wrote love letters to Penelope all summer, his sneaking around in empty classrooms to make out with her, and his tendency to be a mother hen to his siblings. Like you said, it reinforces the idea of Percy being family-oriented and the protective parent!
*On a hilarious note, Leo’s are supposed to be most compatible (platonically or otherwise) with Sagittarius (Bill & Charlie) or Aries (Fred & George), and they are least compatible with Aquarius (Arthur).
Sagittarius
Adventurous (Insatiable Wanderlust & Globetrotting Adventures)
Stands Up For What is Right
Independent
Charming & Popular
Flexible & Go With the Flow
Curious
Fun-Loving
Blunt
Thrill-Seeking
This describes Bill & Charlie pretty well too (from what we know), and it also reinforces the idea of them being the more distant, "fun” parent (in Bill’s case) or choosing not to be a parent at all (in Charlie’s case).
Thank you for the comment & giving me something to look into further! 😊
