Oh, absolutely. Fran is someone who, in my opinion, desperately wants to be a catboy. After all, who does not love little friendly feline friends with their cute widdle ears and lashing tails? The man is a fiend for that sort of attention. In fact, I have a fic planned where he's the worst goddamn foster cat ever foisted upon a poor Gilbert.

But, on the other paw, it's of my personal opinion that he is, despite his own wishes, very much a dog person in the literal sense of the word. A beautiful, golden hunting hound turned prized show-dog turned placid loving pet.

I think he's a beast who wears the skin of a man and is very good at being a man, but he still scents blood in the air or the frantic movement of some small furry mammal and his mouth fills with saliva and his heart picks up with prey drive. It's an ancient, hard-coded part of him, more primeval and primal than any rational human being has any right to be.

And, yet. He wants to be loved. Wants to be doted on, and kept and shown off as the prize he is. He finds comfort in the embroidered and jeweled collars he wears and is proud of himself when he's not a slavering beast but rather a handsome guard-dog of those sheep he no longer preys on. Scratch his belly and watch his leg shake. Let him sleep beside his master, or his pack, or those he watches over with careful canine eye.

There's a feline freedom he envies and romanticises, I think, but there is a different type of freedom in letting himself stop pretending to be what he isn't -- a cat, a man, a nation -- and allow himself the simple love of being... In that distinctly doggish disposition of his.
