It’s been over half a year since I did a set of STAR WARS fic recs that weren’t pairing-focused, but I have been reading fic along the way! And sometimes you want fic that’s not about ships, no matter how much you love them, sometimes you just want to read about friendships or you want to read some cool worldbuilding or you only want the plot, and Star Wars fandom has been lovely about that. Hell, sometimes you just want to cry about how much you love the Jedi and you want to share that affection with other people, through the incredible experience of telling stores about them, like they were trying so hard and they were right about so many things and they were dying for years to try to help the galaxy, and teaching about how emotional regulation is good actually, and sometimes you want to show that through the disaster trio and sometimes you want to yell about how good Mace Windu is and sometimes you want to love frog grandpa and sometimes you want to get into a fistfight to defend Luminara’s honor and sometimes you want the whole Order sitting down to a family dinner and sometimes you want fic where Anakin and Mace actually get along and so many other things! So, here’s a collection of some excellent fic that I think most people should be able to find at least something to enjoy, whether you’re looking for fun disaster lineage shenanigans or heartbreaking pain because Star Wars Is Pain or some awesome Jedi Order worldbuilding or some all too rare Mace Windu Appreciation fic, I HOPE YOU ENJOY. Skywalkers apart au! It's so precious that Anakin gets to be a dad, a rebellion general Dad but he gets to be there for at least one of them and Padme survives and gets to be a mom and maybe someday they get to meet and it's so good.

Also the concept of General Skywalker of the Rebellion feels like it has so much potential cause he was such a big figure in the Clone Wars, he was the Hero, the General, he could probably get the various splinter rebel cells (they were very divided in the early Rebellion) to follow him by sheer reputation and charisma. Imagine Anakin being at Hoth, like the attack is going along the usual Imperial imminent victory and suddenly an AT-AT has been thrown clear across the landscape and an announcement sounds out "General Skywalker has entered the field" cue Rebel Counterattack due to morale boost and Imperial Panic.

What happened to the 501st here? Did he go to the Venator's crash site where Ahsoka was during Order 66 what did he think when he saw all the dead folks?

Fun thought, Starkiller being the apprentice in this AU, means that Sidious has probably been comparing him to Anakin (in part because he's bitter he didn't fall, in other part cause it's great for fueling the darkside) for years so the first time they face off he's gonna be full of spiteful hatred (all going according to plan) before Starkiller gets styled on by the Skywalker, cause Anakin isn't crippled by the suit and that means he's still massively powerful in the force and skilled in the blade (Vader was too, but less than a whole Anakin), I could see Anakin pulling a Lightside version of the Rogue One Hallway scene against Stormtroopers (or even inquisitors).

Rebel General Anakin Skywalker would be an Imperial Boogeyman.

Leia would probably appreciate it for a while but also she'd get a bit annoyed about her dad's reputation and "Legend" and the fact that she's probably got that entire thing to measure up to, making her more reckless or foolhardy. That's a big shadow to live under.

Padme on the other hand is probably in a very different situation reputation wise, she was the senator for the new Emperor's home planet, she's the old queen of naboo from the Trade Federation attack, she's a founding member of one of the oldest discrete rebellion cells but that still leaves some stigma. She's probably so very worried about Imperial surveilance on her or Luke or the rest of her family, and it doesn't help that the Inquistorious has probably been sniffing around for a while.

ok this is a veeeeery long ask so i'm gonna have a veeeery long answer which is gonna go under this readmore:

YES!! yes absolutely! tbh i decided a while back he never gets an official promotion to general, everyone just calls him General Skywalker for so long that it sticks loll. BUT YEAH I mean working with a Jedi is rare and awe-inspiring enough for any rebellion cell but working with the hero with no fear??? half the rebels are wondering if they can interrupt this mission to ask for his autograph

its extra funny bc for the first few years of the empire he's lowkey depressed and like agh i failed the order republic AND my family i'm a terrible horrible no good jedi who nearly turned to the dark side and while he's having this spiral there's some rebel standing next to him pointing and pogging

and yeah he's SO useful in big battles like that!! he's half a legend, half a ghost story, given most ppl think he died in the Purge but here he is, enacting justice on the empire!! tho he does struggle on quieter missions (which happen a lot more at first bc gotta hide from the empire) that you cant just blaze into. its a difficult shift to go from clone wars general skywalker to rebel general skywalker

yeah 501st same as canon ): but OHHH MY GOD yes thats SUCH A PERFECT IDEA, Anakin going with Rex and Ahsoka to the site and mourning them all (and probably going into another depression spiral lbr)

youre so right lollll obvs leia loves the one up she has in an argument of "well my dad's general skywalker, beat that" but as u say she absolutely wants to live up to that (+ is a very independent/stubborn person and would like Leia Skywalker, not just "General Skywalker's daughter" lol)

AND YEAH ABSOLUTELY Padmé and Anakin's roles in this au are both so interesting (is that egotistical to say) bc they're these upside down versions of their clone wars roles, both very loud people forced to quieten down and be Discreet about how they go abt helping ppl. Padmé is really struggling hiding so much (luke's force sensitivity, her rebel activities, all relations to anakin) and trying to protect Luke while helping the Rebellion WHILE trying not to seem suspicious. a lot on her plate -- only made worse by palpatine keeping a close-ish eye on her, and she can't tell why (is it bc of luke? the rebellion? anakin? or is it just his old favouritism or patriotism being VERY inconvenient??)

on the inquisitors, obvs you don't see a lot of them on coruscant -- but padmé's SO scared abt ppl (MAINLY SIDIOUS WHO, YA KNOW, TRIED TO TURN LUKE'S DAD SITH) finding out abt him and she hates that she's making him repress this part of himself but what choice does she have???

We're gonna revisit that Caretaker Luke AU again because it brings me a certain amount of joy to think about it when I'm in a bitter mood and I just finished Jedi: Survivor, so I'm incorporating that.

Cal and Merrin DO manage to create a refuge for people persecuted by the Empire on Tanalorr and it never gets found or destroyed, so there's this little community of Force Sensitive people and Jedi survivors (and others) already built by the time the Empire falls.

So when Anakin survives and Luke commits to being Rehab for Sith for the rest of his life in order to keep the New Republic from executing Anakin or locking him up for life, there's somewhere else for Jedi and Force Sensitive people to go.

But no one will even tell Luke the NAME of the planet, much less how to get there. Because it's a known fact that if Luke knows it, so will Anakin. And nobody in their right mind would ever trust Anakin with the location of Force Sensitive children or Jedi survivors, that would be madness and stupidity. So for as long as Luke chooses to protect Anakin, he's completely isolated and cut off from all other Jedi that exist, all of their knowledge and history and training.

And even Leia can't know about it or go get training because she refuses to cut Luke out of her life. So Leia is isolated, too. And so is Han. And so is Ahsoka, because let's be completely honest, Ahsoka would 100% forgive Anakin completely in this scenario and refuse to leave him behind all over again.

Anakin hates this. Anakin's instinct is to hunt down the Hidden Path and find this planet to force them to let Luke be a part of their community or kill them all because, well, it's Anakin and someone he cares about is upset, we all know how he reacts to that. Anakin throws this idea on the table at breakfast one day and Luke has to spend several weeks talking Anakin out of committing yet another Jedi genocide, just this time in Luke's name instead of Padme's.

There is no redemption available for Anakin aside from just leaving the Jedi completely alone for the rest of his life. He can give them the gift of his absence and that is it. Same with the rest of the galaxy, honestly. The best thing he can do for the people he's hurt is get out of their way and disappear forever. Luke forgives him. Ahsoka forgives him. Obi-Wan's ghost probably forgives him.

The Jedi on Tanalorr try their very best to pretend he doesn't exist, but when the news breaks that Anakin's finally died and they're finally free and safe from the Sith, there's an obvious uptick in the general happiness among the refugees of Tanalorr. There aren't any celebrations as such, but some people decide to cook a favorite dish to share among everyone, the children are given some time off of lessons so they can go out and play, and there's just a sense of merriment that wafts through the Temple when the last Sith rejoins the Force.

Okay but so one of the Clone Empire AUs (AU where the clones take charge of the republic, usually from the seat of Mandalore and take over the galaxy but keep the Jedi but sorta… like pets??? But spoiled pets, not like the senate kept them) but told from the POV of the Jedi being currently kept inside the temple. They’re not really allowed out of the temple, NOT because they’ll run, but because the clones are paranoid af of them getting hurt (90% of the reason the clones took over was cause they were horrified at the senate treating THEIR Jedi like that) but they’re letting certain senators stay to help pick up the pieces of the galaxy (Anakin is in a pretty bad depression in the temple because Padme is allowed to leave to go to the senate but he isn’t allowed to leave without escorts and usually Rex basically putting a child leash on him and it’s giving him some bad feelings about it all) and the Jedi being nervous about it all.

Thing is. The force is CONSTANTLY telling them this is the correct thing to do. They’re supposed to give control to the clones. Clone empire will save the galaxy. But also, they’ve started talking in Dai Bendu around the temple almost constantly, shiftily walking away when the clones come over to talk to them if they’re in groups, just nervous stuff, like skittish cats.

Cody had to get Alpha 17 to come by to talk to Obi-Wan and Anakin before either of them would stop hiding in Obi-Wan’s apartments all day. Obi-Wan hasn’t cuddled with Cody in a month and that’s VERY concerning. Not that they’re together, it’s just that Obi-Wan likes using Cody as a bed and Cody is addicted to seeing Obi-Wan sleep for once. Alpha had to come by like a concerned dad and gently coax them out of hiding and back to being regular temple inhabitants.

Rex, in a move of desperation, drags them off to the temple salon (beauty, not tea in this case, the temple does and should function as it’s own city which means food and clothing production as well as other things like that) and makes them both get massaged till they’re purring piles of Jedi Goop and is pleased with his babysitting duties. A new haircut and getting rid of tension does wonders. They’re fairly normal after that. Obi-Wan goes back to teaching an Alderaanian poetry class (and supervising kiddo art classes) and Anakin is building a new security system that he’ll integrate soon, and Rex is smug to have gotten them the most normal so far.

The Jedi are skittish tookas who want to hide after this blow to their safety and lifestyles, but the newly instated council (which involves doubling the numbers so the clones can discuss the changes and how things will work with the Jedi) is working on a way to get them back to their true calling: peace keeping.

Basically, the clones start their own empire and use a very firm hand on the Jedi to get them to stop being attack dogs and start accepting love and help now. They are never forced to go on a mission with less than 20 clones from then on.

Bly and Aayla get married in the Room of a Thousand Fountains and Quinlan was delighted to give his baby girl away. Here, take her, she’s very annoying. Obi-Wan and Anakin finally get into a long awaited fight about how Ani got married but never invited his master and Obi-Wan is still hurting from it. Rude. Yoda is terrorizing the frog population with Initiate Grogu. Yaddle has more class than those idiots. Qui-Gon’s force ghost shows up and Fives is the only clone in the room that can see him and won’t stop staring at him with big dumb tooka eyes and Qui-Gon is gonna make him shit his pants he just knows it. Rex and Cody are trying to placate their idiot Jetii (Ahsoka was dragged back to the temple and dropped in Anakin’s lap and it was the most normal he’d been in years and they are inseparable now but Ahsoka ain’t getting in the middle of that lmao) with cuddles and hair pets. Padme is throwing up in a bush because she doesn’t know she’s pregnant and this is the start of a lovely bought of forever sickness. Ugh. Anakin and Obi-Wan finally settle their differences when the clones decide they’ll have another ceremony next month for Ani and Padme. Fox is drunk and dosing on a bed of flowers with a fully grown nexu guarding him, having decided he’s his cub now. That’ll be an interesting relationship. Alpha finally picks Obi-Wan up under his armpits like a cat and says if he can’t stop being grumpy it’ll be naptime. It’s very annoying. One of Bly’s troopers shows up with his foundling he got on Concordia when they were raiding a Death Watch camp, named Din, who has managed to catch Grogu and is cuddling and kissing him into submission. Grogu is delighted, and has found his soulmate.

Back in the day, I posted a list of fics (centered on the character of Darth Vader, in relation to Leia in particular) that left a strong impression on me as a reader. As part of a 2023 resolution to ease back into active reading, I wanted to shout out some newer stories that have equally grabbed my imagination. Like the original list, these stories are focused on Vader, especially if not exclusively in dialogue with Leia.

For context, I look for stories that grapple with the suit, with its effects, so you can expect medical and psychological horror as a theme. I also really like the kinds of horror stories you can tell with a character like Vader: I'm drawn to stories abounding with ghosts and gore. tl;dr - you can expect graphic depictions of violence and body horror, and please heed the tags on the fics themselves.

AU from the Kenobi show. I came to this by chance and am glad I took the plunge; there are scenes that continue to present themselves to me vividly weeks later, thanks to evocative writing.

It's a thankless task to try and explain why this hits so hard, in multiple registers; the premise is gruesome, hilarious, the scene gothic-romantic and post-apocalyptic, the characters melancholy, bitter, unleashed, and cruel, somehow also at their best.

The threads of life he’d felt slipping away were clutched fiercely now, as though for the first time since the Emperor’s death—for the first time in Luke’s lifetime possibly—his father had a reason to survive.

It's never explicitly established in ROTJ whether Vader picked up that Luke's sister was Leia or merely called the word, the feeling from his mind; this story launches from the premise that he was going to die in ignorance, and that learning Leia is his daughter gives him a reason to hold on, to actively atone. There's tremendous humor and sadness and discomfort here; Vader is at once pitiable and impossible to pity, and Leia's perspective gives room for many shades of ambivalence to fester and bloom.

There's splendid tension here from the fact that Leia knows more than he does; even exposed as an invalid, on hunger strike, and at a knowledge disadvantage, Vader remains palpably dangerous, volatile, compelling.

I love this set-up: Vader, deprived of his mask and further neutralized with Force binders, ends up shut up in a prison cell with Leia, and she can't begin to guess as to why.

Last year (I’m crying I meant to do this sooner) I told someone I’d explain this vaguely Star Wars related dream to them (@ablatheringblatherskite @youjustfeelthemforever was it one of you I don’t remember ahhhhh) but either way it spiraled and has become a whole au

so yeah Padme dies and becomes a force ghost because of a combination of Anakin’s crazy force powers and sith magic’s involvement in her death. And she spends those years watching over her children and Anakin (who’s a whole other can of worms in this au but I’ll explain that later).

I thought it’d be cool if her presence is shown through butterflies and the chorinea sylphina was the first to come up when I googled angel butterfly. It also meant I didn’t have to paint her face

They are the Ghost Crew. The ship is still called the Ghost because… Anakin is not the brightest in naming stuff, and Thrawn rather not argue with him.

Backstory:

Ahsoka still left the Jedi Order but during the time away, she fell into the dark side.

Years later, Obi-Wan had also fallen into the dark side. Obi-Wan had been the one to kill Count Dooku. Later on, he had kidnapped Padme and "killed" her after the twins were born then separated the twins to make Anakin believe that they were all dead.

Anakin only knows that Obi-Wan had turned to the Dark side, not that Ahsoka had also turned.

Order 66 is the same as it is, except Caleb Dume, Cal Kestis and some other Padawans were taken in by the new Empire.

Anakin used his ship to travel far away from Coruscant, trying to figure out how to bring back the Republic.

A few years later, he rescued Thrawn from getting executed after Thrawn tried to use his name to get into the Empire but failed horribly. Since then, they both went on as Rebels, trying to stop the Empire as much as they could. They even rescued R2 D2, who had been taken by Obi Wan as well.

After that, they managed to rescue ex-ISB Agent Kallus, whose batch of soldiers were executed by Imperial head Garazeb Orrelios because of Treason (they killed Lasat soldiers that were attacking them first).

Then they stumbled upon Karyn Faro, who had been in the Imperial Academy but had been hiding as a Vigilante after she blew up a factory or two during her time in the academy.

Later on, they stumble upon Eli Vanto, who was Force Sensitive (for this AU) and was working for his family's company in terms of supplies and trades, but his parents and siblings were killed by the Empire after a bad delivery.

And that's how they all came to be as the new Ghost Crew ^^

Wherein I dump my Concept Doodles for the High Fantasy Star Wars AU

Notes:

In TPM his padawan robes are supposed to look rather large on him. He's scrawny and undernourished at this point.

In AotC, his leater books are lighter than his robes and his sash is dark blue

His gauntlet represents his mechanical hand and is an enchanted golden glove (Clone Wars 2003 anyone?)

His enchanted Vader armor keeps him alive but he's constantly in pain; he's practically in a living hell

I'm so excited to tell you about Banshee, but first:

For Dax too? Oh thank you for asking about Dax'Malkin, he is so complex and lore rich, thank younfor asking about him too ♡♡♡

What haunts them?

Dax: Ready for some lore? The thing that haunts Dax'Malkin most is the lose of his twin brother, Krazus. The two were younglings together with the jedi, twin sons, always together. This made it easy for the Night Sisters of Dathomir to take them together. In a ritual to turn them both dark side for The Night Sister's favor, something went wrong. Dax'Malkin's body was changed, beastial spikes growing from his back, his teeth pointed and sharp, the whites of his eyes now an inky black. But still, his heart stayed in the light. When he awoke, the jedi who saved him told Dax that his brother had been lost to them... Dax didn't question this, thinking that his brother had died in the ritual.

After this, Dax'Malkin has always had darkness whispering in his mind, in his heart. He fights hard to keep it at bay, but the ghosts of his past never leave him. He sees them in his reflection every day.

Banshee: Aside from o66, something that haunts Banshee is his first botched mission. He and his brothers were trying to save some refugees from a war-torn planet, but things didn't go exactly as planned. He was moving forward with a small group of the refugees, taking them from a covered area through a field, back toward transport. He didn't see the separatist forces closing in from above, silent as the night... the only one that didn't make it was a kid. The mother screamed and yelled in pain the whole way to the camps, it was the only time Banshee didn't try to drown out the sounds of the battlefield.

If Banshee were ever to have a child, he'd insist on naming them Jaia, after the kid Banshee feels responsible for losing.

Have they torn someone to shred with their bare hands?

Dax: Yes, and it terrifies him. Once Athena fell and Dax went full dark side, he fucking lost everything. He's killed every single clone in the 404th except for Grave Squad, and he does everything he can to hunt them down for the death of Athena. (Don't worry he gets better and gets a reunion with Grave and Athena its not even an AU or a fix it fic its for real)

Banshee: Not with his bare hands, but he is an explosives expert. He's juiced a few people. But Droids? Yeah, he's ripped them apart many, many times.

Modesty and sex question under the cut ✂️

What's their relationship to sex? Modesty?

Dax: oh for sure this Jedi Master fucks. His view on the "No love" policy is "fuck that. Have objectivity. Do not sacrifice the good of the many for the good of the one. Obsession is not love." For this he would straight up hate Anakin lmao, because Anakin is obsessed with Padme. Yeah he loves her, but he's also obsessed with her.

But anyway back to Dax. He's not like, running around telling everyone about his exploites, but he's open about them when he's asked. His padawan and adoptive daughter, Annika Cree, asked once when she was little, "Have you ever been in love?" He replied no, not romantically, but physically, and has experienced deep familial love. When she was older, he told her about the safety and precautions she'd need to take around sex and relationships, and he made sure to create an environment where she could always come to him for guidance and advice on these things.

Banshee: it takes Ban a good while to finally be intimate with a partner. That's not to say he doesn't have the drive, often he has it right away, but he's very sensitive and docile. He wants to make sure everything is true on both sides, that they both want it, that it's not the only thing they both want, and that sex isn't the end of their time together. Ban's sex drive is very very high, but his need for intimacy is even higher than that.

Question for your Caretaker Luke AU, since you've said that you think Anakin would need a Jedi Master, rather than someone like Luke, to help him actually face and leave the Dark Side...

How much would change or how do you think things would go if Obi-Wan was the Jedi Master there to help Luke manage Anakin instead of Quinlan? (We're going with the "he survives ANH" version of this, since you also said you hate Force Ghosts in that post)

Do you think Obi-Wan would be better suited for it, since he does have more of a past connection to him, or do you think that Anakin would just double down on his "I'm Not Facing Jack Shit, Leave Me Alone, Screw You" nonsense, just because it's Obi-Wan?

And how do you think this would affect the new Jedi Order? Do you think Obi-Wan would even want to deal with Anakin at all, after everything, or would he instead prefer to help rebuild the Order and trust that Luke can handle the responsibility on his own?

I think that if Obi-Wan is around that it turns the Caretaker Luke AU into a Caretaker Obi-Wan AU lol. Because Luke is young, he's the hope for the future, Obi-Wan is NEVER going to let Luke just waste away years of his life sitting in isolation watching over Anakin when Obi-Wan can do the job just as well and free up Luke to help Leia rebuild the Republic and the Jedi. Luke would VISIT obviously, but he would not end up Anakin's primary warden/caretaker in this case. Obi-Wan is also going to see Anakin as his responsibility, not necessarily even primarily due to their relationship, but because for all intents and purposes, Anakin is still a Sith and that's still Obi-Wan's responsibility as a Jedi to handle. And this particular Sith is one that Obi-Wan has history with and knows he can handle and contain. The two of them are, in many ways, bound by fate. And, of course, some part of Obi-Wan will always love Anakin, and want to help him if he can. He gave up on the possibility of ever truly reaching Anakin or saving him, but now, the possibility is THERE, for the first time in decades. I don't think he'd ever throw that away or walk away from it, no matter how painful the journey might be.

I actually think Obi-Wan would probably be one of the best people to get through to Anakin, to resume the role of a teacher to him and guide him away from darkness. Specifically because yes, he DOES have that history with Anakin that means he knows exactly what buttons of Anakin's to push and, unlike people like Ahsoka or Padme, Obi-Wan is not attached to Anakin. He is capable of walking away if he has to and being firm about Anakin's choices, but for as long as Anakin has even the slightest hint of willingness to try to do better, Obi-Wan will be there.

Obi-Wan's also come to a lot of peace by ANH, he's not super ruffled by shit anymore, up to and including weird old former Sith with stupid grudges against him. I think he could face Anakin with relative equanimity despite all of the pain and difficulty it's going to cause. Anakin's going to WANT to get a rise out of him and so the worst and best thing Obi-Wan can do in response is to literally just not react (which does not mean he won't have a snarky comeback, just that he won't get ANGRY back). The more Anakin rages and throws temper tantrums at Obi-Wan without driving Obi-Wan to leave or rage back, the more it probably just... starts to drain out of him a little. What's the point in raging if Obi-Wan doesn't rage back?

I think the dynamic between Obi-Wan and Anakin would be very different than with Quinlan and Anakin, obviously. Quinlan would need to work through all of his own shit about Anakin's betrayal at the same time as he's helping Anakin, while Obi-Wan's already done all of that and let it go years earlier. Quinlan's going to probably be a LOT less nice about how he handles the situation than Obi-Wan would. Obi-Wan's going to be very firm about it and not let Anakin get to him, but Obi-Wan also loves him and isn't going to lash out at Anakin. I think Quinlan is going to have zero compunctions about reminding Anakin of just how much pain he's caused sometimes, he's not necessarily going to hand out praise when Anakin does something right. He doesn't love Anakin. He learns to have compassion for Anakin, but he does not love him personally in the way that Luke and Obi-Wan do. What love he may have had for Anakin as a friend died when Anakin betrayed them all and it's not coming back.

So yeah, I think Obi-Wan surviving ANH would provide a much cleaner and softer version of this AU actually. Granted I also think there'd be a lot of OTHER changes to canon if Obi-Wan survived that might cause some ripples, but if we're assuming all goes mostly the same as it does in canon aside from Anakin's death, then Obi-Wan being around afterward is probably the best thing that could possibly happen to him.
