hey char! out of curiosity, how did you and angel get together? and whats one of your favorite things about her? :)

We met right here on Tumblr through this interaction :D

She followed me and I hadn’t followed back at the time (I really rarely check new followers) but after she sent this ask and I answered it I followed her back. After that we started interacting with each other in the comments of our posts and stuff, then we got each other on different social media, and after a couple of months she reached out on Instagram to tell me that she actually lived close by and inviting me to come hang out with her. We hit it off immediately and spent like hours and hours and hours talking, we kept driving from place to place around the city finding more things to do, we went to a record store, a little alternative store, we got food, we got coffee, and from there we started talking to either through text or on the phone literally every day. We’d spend HOURS on the phone together back then, like sometimes 8-9+ hours, just sitting there talking.

We also would meet up pretty frequently in person too of course. Like one time that she stayed over the night before Record Store Day and instead of sleeping we stayed up the literal entire night into the next day talking about Nivek Ogre and Al Jourgensen. And then we moved in together before we were a couple about six months later. We were both looking to move anyway so the timing just worked out and we could kinda “test run” things since I was in a dorm room at the time that was much larger than it needed to be because my school didn’t know how to provide gender inclusive housing for transitioning individuals LMAO. We cohabitated really well and living together only made us grow closer. FWIW I was attracted to her right away, I remember the first moment I fully processed what she looked like was when she first messaged me asking if I wanted to hang out and I looked through her selfies so I’d be able to recognize her when we met and could not believe she really looked like that. I was like lol no way is this person this hot and asking to hangout 😳

Anyway. A little while after moving in together I think there was a lot of tension forming between us because she was (spoilers) attracted to me as well. So we started hooking up before we actually started calling ourselves a couple. The funny thing is neither of us really remember the exact moment we started formally considering ourselves a couple. We never had a big “what are we” convo where we put a solid label to things. We had a few conversations about how we hardly knew how to describe our dynamic because girlfriend / boyfriend felt almost juvenile for the level we were at, already living together and sharing finances and then also hooking up, but we started actually verbalizing stuff we were doing as dates, we’d been saying I love you etc for ages already, we started sharing a bed every night, and at some point us being in a relationship was just our reality. 🤷‍♂️

I love her so much. I feel like the luckiest man in the whole world getting to be with her and spend my life with her. Genuinely cannot believe she is so cool, smart and articulate, stylish, thoughtful, funny, with such good taste in music and everything else, and that she is my baby. It’s still so surreal. As for a FAVORITE thing, it’s so hard to pick just one obviously lol, but I think one of the things I appreciate about her more than anything and that I never ever want to take for granted is the way she’s always striving to learn and grow and form a fully consistent and logical and articulate worldview and ethical / philosophical system, like she’s always thinking about new things, reading new works, investigating the world around her, engaging with complicated subject matter, sharing her insights with me, trying to genuinely form a cohesive system for how to make the world a better place, and that’s inspired and driven me so much to do the same. She’s genuinely one of the smartest people you will ever talk to. I never get bored of our conversations and I learn so much from her all the time.

Things I want to know about my fellow writers!

Last book I read: Seven Faceless Saints by M.K Lobb. Honestly it was only a 3/5. Easy to read and had an okay plot, but the twist was poorly done and frustrated me A LOT. Also, a weird romance thing was thrown in the last 30 pages and I got so confused where tf it came from.

Greatest literary inspirations: Steven King is honestly my favorite author, followed closely by Diana Wynn Jones. Totally opposite genres and styles but I take a lot of inspo from them both.

Things in my current fandom I want to read but I don't want to write: Lol I'm a degenerate and need more Ascended Raphael fics. I physically can't read my own writing/enjoy my own smut so I'm always hunting for very specific shit.

Things in my current fandoms I want to write but I think nobody would be interested in them but me: My Phantom of the Opera/BG3 crossover is my silly little passion project, but I'm also the type that loves to take 2 characters and stick them in every AU known to man. I don't think most ppl are as insane as me about that. (Consider the 'HAHA AGAIN!' TikTok audio.)

You can recognize my writing by: occasional typos (I get horny and impatient), reader inserts, no use of y/n in my x reader fics, big powerful men/power imbalances, choking, men munching (as they should)

My most controversial take (current fandom): Ascended Astarion groupies scare me. He was my first romance and my favorite romance of the lot, but I don't think my appreciation can even compare to half his fanbase. (Also some of them need to leave Neil alone.)

My top three favorite tropes: mutual pining when they both think its unrequited, enemies to lovers, ʰᵉᵃᵗ/ʳᵘᵗˢ ⁽ᵃ/ᵇ/ᵒ⁾

What’s your current writing mood (10 – super motivated and churning out words like crazy, 0 – in a complete rut): Like a 2, honestly. I've been struggling. I have like 7 half-finished fics that I'm trying so hard to brute force but it is simply not happening. Which is insane because in November I was cranking out like a fic a week. Maybe I just need to rot in bed for awhile and contemplate lie a philosopher.

Share a random frustration: I'm juggling 2 jobs and school and social life and hobbies rn and GOD am I not doing to hot with it lmao. Pray 4 me

Close Friends - pt. 7

A/N: I’m trying to fix the mess I did but it’s so hard lmao I have so many ideas but this was one I wanted to do so here my lovers.

You tried. You tried so bloody hard to talk to Sirius but he has done nothing but ignore you completely.

The holidays came and he hasn’t replied to any of your letters and neither did James. You didn’t know how bad you really screwed up until you were up in your room, sobbing into your pillow for feeling completely, utterly daft for kissing Sirius’ best friend.

But he wasn’t just his best friend. He was James and he was your first date ever, you first kiss ever. You haven’t much thuoght of him until last year when the two of you started hanging out due to Sirius and your friendship with him. Though it wasn’t just a friendship, was it? Not to him at least.

“Hey-” a head popped in and the body quickly followed, closing the doors in the compartment.

“Hey, Remus.” you smiled quite sadly. “You’re not avoiding me?”

“I should but I’m not like the two.” he sat down and continued to smile. “I told you.”

“Yes, you did.”

“And you still did it.”

“Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“He was right there and it was so intense between us. He was looking at me with these blazing eyes and his energy was suffocating me- but in a way that it was hot.” you finally looked up from the box you’ve been coddling and to the eyes that rolled way far back. “Don’t-” you laughed and put the box beside you. “I know how’s he like but you can’t blame me for wanting to kiss the right guy.”

He raised one of his eyebrows and laid down on the seat, taking one of your sweaters to use as a pillow. “Are you sure it isn’t Sirius?”

“Yes.” you said without a doubt.

“So James is definetly the right guy?”

“He is.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I can feel it in my bones.”

“And who are you thinking about now?” he asked and you felt surprised by his sudden, unexpected question. He opened one of his eyes and grinned. “I think it’s surely not James you want to see right now?”

“What are you saying?” you started to get frustrated.

He sat back up and put his elbows on his knees, leaning forward. “You’re dense.”

“So I keep hearing.”

“You’re not in love with James. You’re in love with Sirius.”

“How can you tell me who I am and am not in love with?”

“Because if you were in love with James, he’d be the first thought in your mind but it’s not. You want Sirius, don’t you?” he asked and you sat there in silence, unable to answer the question. “And if you could choose between him or James, you’d choose your precious Sirius.” he continued to speak, confusing you completely.

“That’s-”

“I know what I’m saying, (Y/N). You’re so in love with the idea of you and James, your chemistry and intensity that you don’t even see how badly you miss Sirius- and you do.”

“He’s my best friend.”

“So is James?”

“Remus!”

“(y/n).”

“Please leave.” you said, glaring at him as he continued to keep his expression and movement just as he did before. “Leave, please. You’re putting ideas inside my head and I don’t like any of them. You’re saying things that I can’t process right now.”

He stood up and patted his robes. “I’m stating the facts, (Y/n). And the facts always tell the truth.” and he left, leaving you alone in your compartment.

Sirius hasn't been able to look at you since your last encounter. The holidays have passed and you were now sitting alone, next to a seat where he used to sat.

When you came into the classroom, you thought yuor heart was about to burst from not being able to talk to him. James was there as well but he was talking to Lily which it seemed to make the heartbreak so much more agonizing.

Sirius was flirting with one of the Ravenclaws right in front of your nose. It really did not piss you off, more or so it made you extremely, severly sad. There was no other emotion than sorrow. Your heart lifted heavy weight and it was slowly, painfully losing strength.

You tried no to look in neither of their directions because you knew both of them were doing it on purpose, trying to let you know that you were not on their mind when clearly, you were.

Sirius could not take his mind off you and whenever you were in his sight, on his mind, he was so furious. He wanted to shout, yell, punch and throw anything in his sight but it was as if he was so angry that battling you in his head took all the energy to actually do all of those stuff outside his head. Yet, he was determined to be petty, trying his best to hurt you the worst.

You were in love with his best friend. How could you have done that to him?

And it was like you could hear his thoughts to make you feel overly guilty of what you had done. He was so obvious in those four months of school, hinting you that he wanted to be more than friends but you were never sure. Never sure quite really that he fancied you. He had always flirted- always and for the two of you that was normal. You just weren't completely sure and he hadn't said or done anything to prove it.

When you avoided Sirius, you were with James who always made things seem so light and careless. He lifted the weight of those heavy thoughts that wandered in your head and he made the go away. Now… now he was flirting with the red-head a few desks behind you.

You didn't want to look. You did your absolute best to let them know you were not affected by their childish games.

Both of them seemed to notice that your eyes and ears were always on the professor and whatever he was saying but there was a difference between Sirius and James. Sirius knew that your thoughts weren't there because you hated this class and you hated whatever philosophical, sexist crap came out of Sinastra's mouth. You woulnd't be paying this much attention to him- not really. You were trying to put on an act just as he did, just as James did.

James took a short glance at you, thinking it wouldn't last longer than a second. But when he saw you take out your honey chapstick from your bag, all he could think about was it's taste on your lips. All he could think about was the was you pulled him close with your hands and how his own locked so perfect on your hips, like two puzzles together.

He wanted to move away his look. He wanted to turn away but seeing your hair and your lips, remembering all the things he wanted to do to you back then and now was dreading every second he spent at that desk so far away from you. Your hair smelled like papaya the last time he had you- he wonders again if you changed shampoos.

He turned his head away, shutting his eyes and cringing. Why is he thinking about your shampoos. That is so not normal.

Sirius seemed to catch James' staring as he also caught him turning it away from you quite forcefully.

Honey chapstick. He didn't know why but the way you put it on and the way its sent kept wandering into his nostrils whenever the two of you were once close, seemed to take his thoughts far away. You always smelled so good. Sometimes he could smell your argan lotion to which he could never guess correctly until he asked you on it. It was usually coconut or almond, which was so easy to get but then it just changed and he had never heard of argan oil, let alone know what it smelt.

And then you changed your hair shampoo into a papaya one. He asked you about it and oyu simply said the bottles were pretty and you wanted to try them. What you didn't know was that the scent of your papaya shampoo is imprinted into his head like his own reflection. He wonders now though, did you change shampoos again? Which one-

He turned his head forward and shut his eyes. Bloody hell, why is he thinking about your shampoos. It's not normal.

You let out a sneeze and all heads turned to you.

Your sneezes were so adorable to him but just as that little sound made him smile, he looked a few desks behind you to notice James was smiling as well and he knew why.

When the class was finally over, you started walking after Sirius. You knew all of this was your fault but you and Sirius have been friends for so long and the two of you could geto ver any obstacle thrown in front of you.

»Sirius!« you shouted but he continued to walk further and faster. »Sirius!« you started running until you caught up. »Sirius.« you said more calmly, thinking he would stop but he never did nad walked further.

Narrowing your eyes at the guy, you felt an amount of anger claw itself into you, so the next time you were close to him you didn't bother to call out his name. You grabbed his sleeve and pulled him back.

»What!« he shouted angrily.

»We need to talk.«

»Surely, you like to do more than just talk- especially with James.«

»Why are you so upset by this Sirius?! It was a kiss-»

»Why am I so upset?! Why am I SO UPSET?!« he started bellowing, smiling franatically. »Do you know what that bracelet was for?! It was my unconditional love for you! I love you till infinity- that's what the charms presented. My love for you. My goddamn limitless love for you because I LOVE YOU! I had loved you for years now and I tried telling you, I tried showing it to you and I TRIED my best to make it so goddamn obvious to you that you are the one that I want. You are. You are everything I ever wanted for so long and I wish I could have been there before James. I wish it was me on that date, me with the chocolate frogs and me the one you've kissed in the corridor.« he started breathing heavily, staring at you with broken eyes as you continued to only watch. »And I was so jealous of James my whole life. He had a perfect family, perfect grades, perfect reputation but the one thing he didn't have was you because you were my best friend and you were my girl and you were close to me, not him and then I see you and him kissing and I realize that he has you too and that I have nothing! So why am I upset?- Because I have done nothing but show my unconditional love for you and you still chose him!«

He wanted to walk away but it was like an insitnct for you to pull him back. Next words that came out of your mouth- they really haven't felt as real as you said them. »You haven't said anything. You had flirted with me for years- YEARS! You had so many chances to ask me out. You had so many opportunities to say you like me more than just a friend and maybe I wouldn't consider it- or maybe I would but I won't ever know because you never said anything. You did the same thing you did for years and none of them showed me any proof that you loved me more than just a friend. The only thing you did do that made me think otherwise was the bracelet you bought for me and I had so many thoughts every time I looked at it that for a second, minute and even a few hours before I went to sleep I dedicated them for you. I saw it in front of me and I thought that maybe, just maybe it's you, not James. And then James came asking me about me having a boyfriend and about the cologne guy and I thought, hey maybe he noticed. Maybe he's jealous, maybe that's him wanting to tell me he cares. Then months of you not doing anything new than just touching me and hanging around me like you had done for the past years, he backed me against the wall saying stuff you haven't been saying. He thought of the cologne guy, of the hogsmeade guy and I knew he wouldn't notice those things just because we're friends and I kissed him. I grabbed him and I KISSED him and it was the perfect first kiss I could have ever imagined to have with anybody. I can't take back what I did. I can't say I regret kissing him because I don't. I only regret being caught by you that same day because you ruined my perfectly great first kiss. It was all so perfect until you came and made it all about yourself which you always seem to do. I don't like you Sirius but I do love you so much and I care for you and it towers my heart to see you and not being able to talk to you. I miss you SO MUCH! I miss your hugs and your voice, your laugh, your presance- I miss your whole bloody self and hell, I would cut off James for you because James is a crush and you- you are the closest person in my heart that I cannot imagine my life with.- And maybe, maybe we could be more than friends but right now I am not seeing that happening because all you do is avoid, ignore and play these childish games that I despise. That was why I could never imaigne you and me togehter. Because you're still such a kid!« you finally started to breathe as he continued to stare at you motionesly. Before you decided to leave you reached into your pocket and pulled out a wrapped present, letting his attention to fall on it. »Before any of this happened I bought you this for Christmas. I wanted you to have something from me like I had the bracelet from you. You can take it- or don't.« you said, putting it on the bench beside the two of you, running your hand through your hair. »I really don't want it anymore.« you started walking away before stopping and looking over your shoulde.r »But I did want you to have it them most.«

Franny Robinson HC Infodump #7: More Music Stuff

Cover Contributions To Tribute or Charity Albums (and other notable covers):

King of the Road: A Tribute to Roger Miller - Franny recorded a cover of The Moon Is High (And So Am I) for the album. There’s a really cute video uploaded on her YouTube channel of her recording the song and she’s playing acoustic guitar and dancing around in place as she sings in several takes. It’s one of the few internet videos where her husband is seen, because sometimes the camera pans to the sound engineer booth when he’s sitting next to Serghei, her go-to sound guy.

She participated on the charity album BBC Children In Need: Got It Covered, since England’s been her home from nearly twenty years now. She sang a slowed down, gentler version of Pat Benatar’s Shadows Of The Night. (inspired by that being a song I vividly remember my mom singing to my siblings and I lmao)

For the album The Music Is You: A John Denver Tribute, Franny sang Rhymes and Reasons.

On a John Prine tribute album released in 2017, Franny and the other half of the duo Dara & Danny, Daniel Maitland, recorded In Spite Of Ourselves for the album.

For a Connie Francis tribute album, Franny sang Where The Boys Are

Franny, along with black country singer Erica James, curated a Charley Pride tribute album, featuring solely country or country-adjacent singers of color. “Charley Pride, when I discovered a black country artist, as an Asian-American growing up in the 80s, that was amazing to me. Because little Cambodian me was like, ‘wow, so you don’t gotta look like Dolly or Willie to love this music.’ Everyone thinks country and bluegrass music is white people shit, but it ain’t. It was always a mix of folks influencin’ it. DeFord Bailey paved the way for Charley Pride, who paved the way for Darius Rucker, who paved the way for Jimmie Allen, Willie Jones, Mickey Guyton, Erica right here, and non-black POC like myself and Dan(iel Maitland). It was such an honor to get to curate this album with Erica. Amazing.” Franny recorded Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger for the album.

On the Tracy Lawrence tribute album Good Ole Days, she recorded As Any Fool Can See with him

She was featured on Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot, recording She’s Not The Cheatin’ Kind

During a SiriusXM session, she sang Gretchen Wilson’s When I Think About Cheatin’, and the performance w/ent viral

On a Leonard Cohen tribute album, she recorded A Thousand Kisses Deep and that cover also became popular

During a Spotify Sessions recording with Seoul Hanoi’d, Franny recorded a cover of Marcy Playground’s Sex & Candy, which also blew up, prompting Seoul Hanoi’d to officially release it on their 2018 album. It was the second of five singles off of the album, and Franny in the music video was Hot ™

During a Spotify Sessions recording as a solo artist, Franny recorded a cover of Kris Kristofferson’s From The Bottle To The Bottom

Khmer Music:

Franny, for the most part, does not record or perform pop music. However, she’s collaborated on tracks with Cambodian pop singers

She writes a lot of songs used in the soundtracks of Khmer tv dramas, and sings a lot of them as well

She’s known as The Soundtrack Queen in Cambodia

In addition to a lot of songs for film and tv, she’s released three albums entirely in Khmer. A jazz album comprised of original songs and Khmer language versions of classic jazz songs; and two in the indie/alternative style of music similar to Seoul Hanoi’d

And she’s recorded Khmer versions of several of her most famous songs

With other Cambodian diaspora musicians, she regularly collaborates on special covers of iconic Khmer 60s and 70s songs

Songwriting

Franny’s even more active as a songwriter than a recording artist. She’s got over 1,000 songwriting credits to her name.

She began writing songs “when I was 11, but they were atrocious, unsalvageable things. The first song I wrote that ever saw the light of day even after heavy edits was first thought up when I was thirteen.”

Franny is openly bisexual and explores that in her songwriting-- however, most of her songs about women or her sexuality that she wrote “pre-2009-ish” she’s scrapped or sold to other artists. Why? “Look, I’ve been married to my husband for almost twenty years now. And that doesn’t make me any less bisexual. But a lot of the songs I’ve written about women are from the perspective of a thirteen through twenty year old me, and at forty, I’m not the best narrator for those stories anymore.They are my lived experiences and my lived feelings, but I want to see how someone actually going through that will take it and interpret it. The songs I write about women loving women now are about characters I make up for the purpose of storytelling so they’re about women closer to my age, it’s about big girl love, not adolescent love.”

Common themes in Franny Sor Robinson songwriting: geography, vivid imagery like she’s showing you a picture of what she’s singing about, Buddhist themes, Christrianity (she’s a Buddhist but grew up in the Bible Belt so she’s very familiar with Christian themes), alliteration

Franny came under a degree of controversy in 2014 with the release of a song called “The Sabbath” because it was a tasteful song about how much she likes sex with her husband after they’ve been apart for a while, and Franny was like “you know you’d think the pearl-clutchin’ folks would be glad I practically worship my husband, but I forgot women ain’t supposed to actually enjoy sex.”

She's written another really sweet song about making love with her husband that did Not get hate because it was Acceptable TM and pretty romantic actually. Think along the lines of Josh Turner's Your Man or Dierks Bentley's Come A Little Closer. Songs deff about how they wanna get down but sweet.

After Franny retweet a clip of that Tyler Childers song in 2019 with the caption “big relate”, she was asked in a tweet if a follow up to The Sabbath was in the cards. Franny replied with “there’s a demo recorded for a song I wrote about six years back and that’s that on that.” Yes, Franny Sor Robinson indeed has written a song about masturbation. She’s performed the song live a few times, however, it is still unreleased officially

Franny’s written songs with lyrics alluding to her family’s experiences under the Khmer Rouge and escaping and resettling around the world, she cleverly hides them among her albums so people accidentally digest some education

Cornelius is the well-documented muse for “every love song I’ve written that I don’t specify in the album notes or an interview is written about a character. My husband is the love of my life and had given me twenty years and counting of great material to write about.”,

Franny’s been on both ends of this story. In 2019, a song Franny wrote but didn’t record became a smash pop hit after she and her producer sent it around to other producers. They recorded Franny’s demo in mid-2017 and they and the bigger pop producer that worked on the song with them listened to over 20 demos of the song until they found the right person to sing it.

And in 2013, Franny got a huge boost to her fame when she was the featured vocalist on a pop song that became a global smash hit. Franny doesn’t typically do like...super top 40 pop type music, but she liked the song so when her agent suggested she record a demo for it and send it back to the producer looking, she was like “sure, okay” and then was absolutely surprised that they chose her over some of the names she knew also recorded demos for the song.

Misc. Music facts

In 2019, a group of NYU students (where she did her undergrad) made a Franny Sor Robinson tribute album project; the majority of the students were Asian students in the university’s music programs who cite her as a big inspiration for them pursuing music. She 100% cried

For the Netflix show Just Trust Me that she co executive-produces, Franny is also one of the people who soundtrack the show

In 2020, to celebrate the 10 Year Anniversary of her biggest solo album’s release, she pulled a The Story And Cover Stories (we stan Brandi Carlile) where it was re-released along with cover versions of each song by other artists including some of Franny’s biggest living musical influences. All proceeds for the album were donated to Cambodian Living Arts.

Franny has openly admitted in interviews to using mushrooms, LSD, and DMT before in songwriting sessions. Her stance is Kacey Musgraves’ stance. Franny quote from 2019, “Used responsibly, I think psychedelics are a worthwhile experience to have. But safety and education are key. I truly don’t believe they are party drugs. Psychedelics aren’t a party, they’re a deeply spiritual and philosophical journey.”

FUCK YOU @ineverhadadoubt, I’M NOT INTO SUBMISSIVE MEN IT’S MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT

A slightly humorous critical response to @ineverhadadoubt on my irrational attraction to Daniel Kaffee

A bit of context before the main argument. I’m known on the Benthan Discord Server as the Resident Kinkster, not because I’m kinky per se, but because I don't shut up about them. As well as my very peculiar thirst objects: Rolled Up Forearm Sleeves, Voice Kink, Rope. Jk lmao. (or am I, you don’t have proof). And Well, look. I really like Danny Kaffee and this post by @academicgangster slightly inspired me to write this. Also because I have a lot of thoughts and I need to get this out and defend myself from Libel™ and False Narratives™ from @ineverhadadoubt and @misstangle about kinks I don’t have.

So, having watched A Few Good Men three and a half times over the course of three days has led to various conversations and speculations on the film. Mainly centering on the character of one, Daniel Allister Kaffee. In this essay, I will be responding the frankly egregious accusations the Mainstream Media™(e.g. Ruth) that the author is into subish men when the reality is a far more nuanced and complex situation having to do with the themes present in the film and the characterization of Daniel Kaffee in particular.

Firstly, the film deals in the philosophical discourse of “good” men, loyalty, honor. In essence, it’s a dive into what happens when men follow their own code. Jessup, the motherfucker, believes himself to be above the law and in the most famous scene in the film he demonstrates the ideology clearly through his anger at the question Danny presents to him, “Did you order the code red?!”. He takes offense at it, stating that he “defends a country” much like how at the time of writing Trump takes offense that he is an agent for Russia, but that’s another can of worms.

While on the outset the film is set up as a classic courtroom drama, with a plucky attorney and obviously evil character, that is forced a little more into the background and follows more on the character of Daniel Kaffee and how he overcomes his insecurity in order to do the morally right thing and in essence come to understand what honor and code really mean.

So, with this in mind, we can begin to unpack Daniel Kaffe’s character arc. He begins as the Smartest Smartass to ever Smartass in the history of Smartassery, litigating a plea bargain over softball practice, getting the deal he wants. This is his establishing moment. Thus, in the mind of the audience, he is in control and gets what he wants, despite being facetious during the entire process. He is cocky, young and doesn’t care but he’s good at his job. At the prospect of being handed the case by division, he still does not take any of the case seriously, at least at the surface level. He appears to be obfuscating stupidity or rather obfuscating disinterest. But at the minute at being yelled at by Joanne, he begins to take a more proactive approach to the case.

You see Daniel Kaffe’s whole character is one who desires control and yet despite outward appearances is always under the thumb of other characters. Division? They hand him the case. Joanne? Makes him take it to trial. Sam? Makes him wear the whites to Cuba. Jessup? Makes him “ask nicely” for the transfer file. Jack? Also goads him into taking it to trial and points it out to him later on in the narrative. He is pulled and pushed into moving in one direction or another but is dependent on those around him to make the choices he makes. This comes as a result of the insecurity that Kaffee has from living in the shadow of his father’s legacy. Joanne in their second meeting calls out Daniel’s current behavior as a “brilliant, but lazy” lawyer, and by bringing up the legacy of his father causes him to push himself to confront his insecurities and meet with his clients.

So being that he’s insecure, he lets everyone control him to varying degrees, with Jessup being the most prominent example. The whole point of Jessup telling him to “ask nicely” in the narrative is to show he knows he’s under suspicion but there is nothing Kaffee can do to him. So Kaffee must submit to established authority in order to do his job. The turning point in this conflict is when Sam tells Kaffee that is Kaffee who is lead counsel, not himself or his father. With this Kaffee is starting to be free from the shadow of his father’s legacy. This is finalized on his final cross-examination of Jessup, where he breaks from everyone’s control going against Jo’s advice and as he looks to Sam disagreeing, he decides to go for it. He rolls the dice, and for the first time makes a decision of his own volition ending with justice being served. This ties into the idea of Free Will™, and is a military man truly free? Is any man ever free to do what is right?

With this interpretation of the film being established, we can begin to unpack the misrepresentation of the author’s attraction to Daniel Kaffee.

For Fuck's Sake. Ruth. Ruth honey. DID, Did you think about this sentence before you typed it out? THIS JUST MAKES IT SEEM THAT IM HAVING FANTASIES OF BEING A SUB, which unless you have direct evidence of, do not accuse me of this kink. This is Libel™.

Ok, look. The reason I keep saying The Sub™ Scene is because he submits to authority. And the authority is not attractive or likable at all, so I’m not including Jessup in this interest. It’s a personality thing. Kaffee, the Smartest Smartass to ever Smartass, being forced into politeness and courtesy to prove a point is just. Hot. Because his establishing moment is getting what he wants being flippant, coasting by and doing just fine, makes the audience understand that this is his everyday normal base behavior. He’s used to doing whatever the fuck he wants when he wants (within reason anyway) and he’s used to litigation going his way. He has an inherent issue with authority, established when he meets Jo for the first time, his superior. When she calls him out the second time they meet does he start taking his job a little more seriously. Jack also very accurately observes and breaks down his personality in the movie twice. See he goads him into going trial, as well. And when he discusses putting Jessup on the stand, he perfectly states that Kaffee was “bullied into that courtroom.” Kaffee unable to accept it starts shouting at him.

Kaffee is a very Covert Sub™, it is subtle because his forefront personality is always in control and commanding attention. AND TO ME THE AUTHOR, THE FACT THAT HE GETS PUT IN HIS PLACED AND HE HAS TO TAKE IT IS JUST VERY INTRIGUING. His Harvard trained mouth can’t help him because he is ultimately trying to do his job, and he can’t damn all the consequences. Smartasses being put in their place is the hottest thing don’t @ me. But in the Final Cross-examination, when his Harvard trained mouth can finally be taken seriously by authority, he goes all for it making a point that all the frustration and forced submission he’s gone through will have been very much worth it because he’s going to absolutely obliterate Jessup on the stand. So, he speaks low and carefully, much like how Jessup does early on in the film. And when he has Jessup where he wants him, he starts shouting. And the last thing he says to Jessup face to face is “The witness is excused.” Making it clear that Jessup may be a colonel, and he may think he’s above the law, but this is Kaffee’s domain and he’s the authority Jessup must answer to.

In short, my attraction to Daniel Kaffee cannot be attributed solely on to his submissive moments, rather how his character is set up as a man who is used to getting what he wants his way, who has to submit to the authority he has a problem with to in the end get what he wants. Also his eyebrows, eyes and Class A™ Navy Uniform is very nice. AND HE SWEARS. Also when he has to submit to authority, he gets quiet™ and I love it when Tom’s voice gets quiet™

SUMMARY:

After the Promised Day, Ed and Al return to a quiet, ordinary life in Resembool with a newly mortal Hohenheim in tow. However, word of his true identity has spread to Xing, and in the midst of the power struggle surrounding Ling's rise to the throne, Hohenheim and Ed are kidnapped and spirited away across the desert into the political maelstrom. In order to recover them Al also travels to Xing, braving the lions' den that is the Xingese royal court in the hopes of securing Ling and Mei's help. However, if they ever want to escape, the Elrics must first navigate a world of scheming nobles and diplomatic pitfalls, where Hohenheim's legacy and their Xerxian heritage are a powerful political currency whether they like it or not.

Having arrived at the entrance, he peered around the corner to be confronted with the shocking sight of three strange men hauling a trussed-up Hohenheim over the far wall towards a waiting car.

"What the hell?!" he cried. Then he was leaping into action before he could even stop to think about it, charging across the graveyard. "What the hell do you assholes think you're doing?!"

"Edward!" cried Hohenheim, and then he disappeared into the back of the car with an undignified yelp.

A fourth man waiting in the driver's seat had already started the car, while the two not manhandling Hohenheim turned on Ed. Shock flashed across their faces for some reason as they turned to him and they shared a glance before whipping out ropes and knives and charging forward to meet him. Adrenaline coursed hot through his veins. He hadn't seen any kind of action in months. It was about time he got some excitement again! Slamming his hands together, he darted forward, slapping his palms against the graveyard wall, intending to send them flying with transmuted stone, and -

Oh. No alchemy. Shit.

Something heavy slammed painfully into the back of his head and he went out like a light."

He didn't want the kids to worry, but it was hard to hide his apprehension when he was wound tighter than a spring. Every tree they passed felt like the potential site of an ambush. Any moment now, Quill could leap out and snatch up one of his sons…

"I have to leave town again," he told them. "So I'm taking you with me."

"Really? We're going with you?" Al absorbed this with his little brows pulled together. He'd imagined everything would be fine again once Dad came home. But he'd never thought that maybe Dad would take them away with him instead of staying. "When are we coming back?"

Hohenheim winced. "We're not coming back, Alphonse."
