FTH 2024 Auction Calendar

We blinked, and it's 2024, and our EIGHTH year of running this auction. 2024 has all the same problems as last year but more — but we also have a lot to be hopeful about, and a lot of good projects worth supporting and fighting for.

You can look at this page (also linked in our header) for the list of this year's supported nonprofit organizations. We'll be posting more detailed profiles of each of them in the coming weeks. Below is the full calendar for this year's auction.

February 5th: creator signups open

February 12: Fan Craft Bazaar signups open

February 19th: creator signups close

February 29th: browsing period begins, Fan Crafts Bazaar opens

March 5th: bidding opens

March 9th: bidding closes

March 16th: proof of high bid donations due

March 20th: Fan Crafts Bazaar closes (individual stalls may close sooner)

March 21st: proof of 2nd chance donations and Craft Bazaar donations due

December 31st: fanworks due

Back in 2021, as we were pulling together the fifth FTH auction, we joked together behind the scenes about how great it felt that the name of our auction was no longer quite as on-the-nose as it had been in our first few years. But it's 2024, and in all likelihood 45 will be back on the ballot: just one of the many sobering and scary things we're facing down this year.

But for the past seven years, we've had the privilege of watching thousands of fans -- yes, literally thousands -- dedicate their time and money and energy to the twin projects of sending support to some amazing organizations while building and strengthening community ties within fandom. Now, more than ever, that kind of community-building is essential.

We hope you'll join us, and join one another, in sending much-needed financial support to these amazing organizations and in putting more joy and beauty out into the world in the form of fanworks. These are dark times, but when we join together we can make them a little brighter.

A little bit about Fandom Trumps Hate

FTH is an online fanworks auction, designed to raise money for progressive nonprofit organizations that help and support marginalized people. In the past seven years, thousands of fans have joined forces to raise nearly $240,000 for a range of progressive organizations.

All fandoms and pairings are included. So, what are you willing to offer? If you are an author, artist, beta, or provide other services within fandom, all are welcome!

Check out the list below for different types of fanworks and fan labor to get an idea of what you may like to sign up for.

You can offer any type of fanwork that can be delivered digitally, including:

written fanworks (fic, poetry, remixes, etc.)

digital art, which includes but is not limited to gifsets, manips, mood boards, etc.

podfics

fanvids (including fancams)

fan labor, which includes but is not limited to betaing, brit/japan/America-picking, or offering specialist expertise.

Very simply put, you bid on a fanwork, if you're the highest bidder, you donate directly to a charity from the list and send proof to the organizers, and the person whose auction you won will be making the fanwork for you before the end of the calendar year! I joined up! I will have two works on offer this season, a 5-10K new work, and a 10-20K remix of one of my existing Justified fics.

As of today, there are a total of 7 Works that have been submitted for Justified fandom, which is AWESOME! Y'all there are SEVEN (7) For All Mankind fanworks on offer in this year's @fandomtrumpshate auction! That means we are going to get up to seven (7) new FAM fanworks! (which is nothing to sneeze at in a tiny fandom like ours.)

The catch: most of these creators are offering to create for other fandoms, too. We've got to make sure to win these auctions ourselves!

wait, what is Fandom Trumps Hate?

FTH is a fanworks auction that raises money for progressive nonprofits (here's this year's list.) The folks listed below are offering to make a fanwork for their highest bidder, but the money doesn't go to the creator themselves: the winning bidder donates directly to the nonprofit and sends in proof of donation to the auction, and then creator and bidder are put in touch to start planning out a fanwork. You can read more about the auction here. Okay, onto the fanwork offerings!

themysterybox (aka @frankandpercy) is offering to write a fic of 10-20K in length, up to an E rating. They're particularly excited to take on alternate universes, and are also interested in writing poly fic, genderswap, trans characters/interpretations of characters, f/f, and ambiguous or unhappy endings.

els (aka @midnight-els) is offering a fic of 5-10K words, up to an E rating. els is especially interested in f/f ships, queer interpretations of characters, and happy or open endings.

naturaliseme (@naturaliseme) is offering a fic of up to 5K, up to an E rating, focusing either on Margo/Molly or Margo/Irina.

Avawtsn (@antaranya) has two FAM offers (#2 and #3). the first of which is for podfic (!!!!) She will produce an audio recording of your fic (or someone else's, if you get permission for it) of 5-10K words, up to a T rating.

Avawtsn's second FAM offer is an art offering (and you should take a look at those portfolio links, this is very exciting for us.)

I, @tiltedsyllogism, also have two offers! I will write you a fic of 5-10K, up to an E rating, and I'm pretty wide-open on who and what I'll write about. I like character studies and missing scenes, and I'm particularly interested in writing stories that capture the many different emotional layers of longstanding relationships.

I also have a fan labor offering: I will Yankpick or Russia-pick (or both!) a story of yours that is in process, and advise as best I can about everything from background culture to common turns of speech to local landmarks. I am also happy to do a more typical beta read in addition to/instead of language and culture-picking.

Totals Time!

It's been a year of records and record-breaking. Of reaching new fandom spaces and building new community ties. It's been wild. And absolutely fantastic.

When we closed the auction signup window we had 981 offers —nearly 150 more than we'd ever had before. When we re-opened it for 4 more hours, hoping to find another 19 folks (because we wondered what an auction with 1000 offers would look like) you all came through in spades, boosting the auction everywhere and bringing back 100 new offers in 15 new fandoms, bringing us to 1081 offers this year - a 33% increase over our previous record.

And you all weren't done breaking records. Shattering them.

This is the first year that any of our supported nonprofit orgs has received a 5-digit sum. And? TWO of them did.

Huge thanks to our 797 creators offering 1081 auctions in more than 400 different fandoms and subfandoms, and to everyone who bid! And to our 17 fan crafters who brought in $4,127 of that total —60% more than our previous crafting record!

So, what's next?

Contact deadlines:

Creators, be sure you contact your bidders by April 1, and bidders, on your end please respond to their communication by April 15!

Bidders need to provide their creator with a workable prompt by June 30 (unless you've worked out a different timeline together) to ensure they have plenty of time to finish their fanwork.

Once the fanwork is posted, let us know via our form (can you believe FOURTEEN creators have already finished??) and if you’re posting it on AO3 be sure to add it to the Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 collection. If you’re writing a fic for FTH and need help from our Regiment of Fan Laborers, email us! As always, the deadline for completed fanworks is December 31.

We hope that for at least some people, your involvement in FTH will lead to continued action throughout the year. Sign up for our organizations’ email lists, check out their volunteer opportunities, and help boost their signals on social media!

We have a packet of organizational materials we’ve been sharing with other auction organizers since 2017; we’re planning to spend the month of April overhauling and updating these materials to incorporate many of the improvements we’ve implemented since then. If you’re thinking about organizing an auction or fanworks exchange in your fandom to raise money for a good cause, we would love to share those materials with you. I haven't seen anyone in the bandom involved in this, even though I've seen my past fandom spaces jumped right in, I wanted to offer bandom fics for this charity event this year!

I'm going to sign up for the fanworks auction @marveltrumpshate—I had such a good time writing a fic* for @fandomtrumpshate this spring, and MTH would apparently love more Cherik writers! The Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction is here! Bidding is open from March 5-9.

Eleven authors, including myself, are offering fanfic and other content for the maze runner fandom, as a gift for donations to a variety of important charitable organizations of the bidder's choice. There are over 1000 offers of fanworks like fanfiction, podfics and art, even fannish labour like beta help or culture picking, for 215 different fandoms this year.

Sunflower Auction bids open

So there’s a fanworks charity auction in aid of Ukraine running and I signed up.

If interested, you can bid on me here or browse other offers here. Bids close on May 30. 

Though I mostly write Star Wars fic under this pseud, I’ve written for two decades in fandoms huge (LOTR) to medium (Austen, LMM) to tiny (several Yuletide-sized book fandoms). I’m not a fast writer, but I’m reliable; I have yet to default on an exchange commitment. 

This is a bit nerve-wracking because I’ve never done an auction before, but I’m very excited and really keen to work with my bidder to develop a story that’s just what they were hoping for! (And the worst that can happen is no-one bids, in which case I’ll donate the money myself.)
