Never complain, never explain.
- Benjamin Disraeli
The royal family's unwritten rule of ‘never complain, never explain’ has served it well to weather many crises and storms that circulated around it. The late Queen Elizabeth II was masterful in remaining stoic and dignified as those around her lost their heads. She personified the unwritten rule that safely navigated the British monarchy through tough times.
But the motto has its origins not with a member of the royal family but with a comment made by a British prime minister, Benjamin Disraeli, who served two terms under Queen Victoria.
Disraeli died in 1881 and the earliest attribution of the quote in full was made to him in a 1903 work by John Morley. Disraeli's comment is thought to have been adapted from notes made by a Master of Balliol College, Oxford, Benjamin Jowett, whose "Maxims for a Statesman" date from 1873-76. Jowett's maxims comprised over eleven pieces of advice, including: "never quarrel, never explain, never hate, never fret, never fail" and "never tell".
Current and future members of the Windsor royal family could do worse than follow her late majesty’s wise example.

“One authority recently wrote, ‘The notion of an “Angevin empire” is nothing more than a convenient invention of modern historians.’ Historians tend to reject the possibility of the Plantagenets’ collection of lands achieving permanence and political stability, seeing them merely ‘as the lucky acquisition of a quarrelsome family and not as an institution’. Although these lands are lumped together under the convenient term, Angevin or Plantagenet ‘empire’, few see much evidence for any Angevin concept of imperial doctrine or permanent union. In the Middle Ages the only true empire was the Roman Empire’s successors in East and West. Richard I and John’s seals bore the inscription Rex Anglorum, Dux Normannorum et Aquitanorum et comes Andegavorum; they had no name for the bloc of lands assembled by their father. […]
Henry II and his sons’ concept of their ‘empire’ and its permanence proves a difficult question; no concrete notion of unity for this ‘empire’ seems to have taken shape. Despite centralising tendencies in England and Normandy, the Angevin monarchs made no attempt to impose a uniform administration on their other continental territories. While Norman and English law and administration under Henry II followed closely parallel lines, he followed his father’s advice in his other domains, avoiding imposing uniform laws or institutions and ruling according to their different laws and customs. It is impossible to know exactly what notion John had of his inheritance other than a bloc of family possessions and feudal rights, source of his family’s wealth and political power. Many of his subjects, however, were coming to see the Plantagenets’ congeries of lands as ‘a curious anachronism’. […]
Scholars note too that the Angevin monarchs provided no unifying principle, no common culture that could bind their Anglo-Norman, Angevin and Aquitainian subjects together. Their ‘empire’ was a new creation, and Henry only began to construct administrative machinery in its constituent parts after the 1173–4 rebellion.”
— Ralph V. Turner, King John: England’s Evil King?

Bruce: Jason, if someone is tearing this family apart, it's Dick, not you.
Dick: Is this about my fashion's choices?
Bruce: We're a Goth family! Punk, emo, grunge, if you want, I'm not picky, but DISCO?!

B'Elanna, Neelix, Tuvok and Chakotay needed to star in an episode where they just talked about their different beliefs and approaches to spirituality/religion. Paired off and all together. I need to gain more insight. I need characterization and I need it to be messy.
#B'Elanna's difficulty with Klingon myths and religion (especially due to her internalized racism)#Chakotay's current strong belief in his own spirituality despite his initial complete rejection of it (and how B'Elanna seems to admire#and have talked with Chakotay about it extensively in the past given how many specifics she's aware of)#Neelix's belief in an afterlife being the only thing that comforted him after his entire family was killed - the knowledge that he would be#able to reunite with them again and that knowledge being ripped away from him#Does he still believe? Are there other aspects of his previous spiritual beliefs that are thrown into question?#Just because it isn't 'real' does it make it unimportant? How do we even know whether or not it's 'real'?#He died and doesn't remember reaching that tree and seeing his family - does that mean it didn't happen?#Tuvok's line in 'Innocence' about how he's begun to have doubts about whether or not a katra exists and what happens after someone dies#and his firm ties to Vulcan spirituality and ritual#ALL SO INTERESTING!!!!!!!!#star trek voyager#I don't think it'd be a calm or healthy conversation either - they're not therapists and I don't think anyone but Chakotay#would be particularly careful with his words#and before you say Tuvok's a Vulcan so he would be let me remind you that Tuvok told B'Elanna to her face that he thought Klingons#were basically savages - he is INDELICATE to say the least#Neelix is careful with his words bc he's a people pleaser for survival but also he has a tendency to bother people and be overly pushy#and I think he'd do a lot of research and be the one leading the conversation/the reason they get on the topic and continue on it#B'Elanna wouldn't want to talk about it. She wants to talk about it the least. But she must!!!! Bc the episode demands it!!#st voy

just started giggling (i’m insane) thinking about a situation where buck and eddie are stuck somewhere alone (a building collapses while they’re inside or something, very much like the call in season 2 with the earthquake and the hotel) where the building shifts, eddie starts falling, and buck catches him. the minutes go on and buck is holding eddie up by his arm alone, eddie dangling in the air several stories up.
eddie sees that its literally ripping buck in half to hold on and help is a while away from getting to them. so eddie tearfully is like ‘buck. let go.’ buck is immediately like ‘no way eddie don’t say that.’ but eddie sees that buck would literally rather fall over the side with eddie than let go, and eddie can’t have that. someone needs to be there for chris. so he starts telling him how much he loves chris and how much he loves him and the team and his family and to tell them that while buck is just shouting over him to stop and its going to be all right. eddie gives buck one last smile and starts loosening his grip on his arm and buck is just crying and screaming and scrambling to grab at eddie and trying to use his last bit of strength to pull him over the edge but they both know its not enough.
at the last minute, before they separate, the team bust through the debris behind buck and he clamps down as hard as he can on eddie’s arm and yells to them to hurry up. and when they finally haul eddie over the edge he’s passed out and buck’s shoulder is dislocated but he’s just so relieved that they’re both ok.
and of course we get a scene at the hospital after eddie wakes up with buck sitting there in his sling. eddie calls buck captain america lovingly and they scold each other a little for being so willing to sacrifice themselves for each other and then have the most incredible kiss that feels like they’re free falling off a building hahahahah

Something something Nico dies. And years down the line, when Hazel has lived a fulfilled life and it’s time for her to reunite with her brother, her children watch as a young boy just appears out of nowhere - invisible to the other’s eyes but theirs - and takes the old woman’s hand the same moment her breaths stop.

Anthony seeing Kate looking like this across the room at the party (maybe) and trying very hard to stop himself from marching over to her. She wore this dress only to aggravate him, he's sure of it. He can't focus on the conversation with his mother, or the other guests, his sole focus is Kate.

Anthony already out of breath by the time he’s nudged his way over to her
“Hi.”
Kate raised her eyebrow, turning slowly towards him, “Anthony.”
“I didn’t know you were-” He’s forced to take a deep breath in, “I didn’t know you were coming tonight.”
Kate’s lips curved in a smirk. “This is a party for the whole office isn’t it? My desk is in the office.”
“Yeah but I didn’t- I didn’t see your RSVP.” Anthony said a little stupidly, his chest aching as he looked at her.
“Did you look for everyone’s or just mine?” Kate chuckled, still staring back at him with that smile on her face, “And I’d like to come tonight, are you offering?”
“Oh! Well!” Whatever he’d been about to say next died in his throat as Kate leaned in towards him and her lips brushed his ear.
“Calm down, I’m just fucking with you.” She pulled back, her eyes dancing, “Have a nice night.”
And without another word she turned to walk away, and left him standing there, gaping after her like an idiot.
