Nuka-Girl [IMG ID: An acrylic painting done after one of the Nuka-Cola advertising posters in Fallout 4. The background is red and white diagonal split with white stars. A blonde woman (short hair in an updo) in a skimpy white space suit exposing her midriff and thigh-high black boots clutches a space helmet in one hand and a cola bottle in the other. She is wearing a red jet pack and is casually leaning against a gigantic Nuka-Cola bottle. The second image features this picture in a glass frame where the wood is distressed in a way to make it look like it has survived in an irradiated wasteland, including some glowing uranium green/yellow wash. / END IMG ID]
I painted this a few years ago after one of Fallout 4's in-game advertising posters. It was a Christmas gift to my nephew, who got me into the Fallout games in the first place. He died last year and ownership of the painting reverted back to me. I offered to give it to friends of his, they chose not to take it. Because of emotional attachment, it will never be for sale.

a new fanfic by me! I've been working on it for the past 12 or 13 days and it is finally finished!!!
Many thanks to @gatewaygeek
for all their wonderful help, couldn't have done it without you!!
The summary:
Nick Valentine is a synth. A synthetic person. He feels different, outcast, sometimes like he's not even a person himself. Though, he's got Ellie, and Nate, and he's even got his partner's son, Shaun. Shaun, who is also a synth, but doesn't know it. Nate knows, Nick knows, and through the growing pains of the new family, it's only a matter of time until Shaun does, too.

The best Nate and Nora prewar depictions are the ones where A) Its the exact same as a regular marriage but with queer vibes and Nate gets pegged. B) Lavender Marriage where they really do love eachother, just not romantically. And C) T4T where NATE carried Shaun instead

we get it, you hate hlvrai. how about instead of being bitter you let people enjoy things. fr whats the point of gatekeeping a 20 year old game?
Look, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you didn't live through the 2020 fandom bullshit, because if you'd witnessed it, even peripherally, you would not have felt compelled to send this ask. So, a few things you should know:
I don't actually hate hlvrai! I genuinely enjoyed the series and still quote it regularly. I even used to enjoy some of the fan content, before the fandom exploded in popularity and there was a huge influx of mostly of very young fans (fine, but not my scene) who wanted me and most of my friends to die (bad; see below).
I'm not dreading more hlvrai content; I'm dreading the potential fallout within the fandom. Canon tags flooded with unrelated content. Wildly OOC characterizations of canon characters based on similar characters in an unrelated series. Endless racism discourse that somehow manages to affect everyone except the tiny fraction of fans who are actually being intentionally racist. Pushback against mature content for an M-rated game because "there are kids here now!!" Ship discourse. Death threats and endless harassment related to the ship discourse. Being accused of being a child predator and threatened with doxxing for shipping two grown adults in a different fandom.
A lot of really lovely people were driven out of the canon HL fandom because of bullshit instigated by hlvrai fans who either didn't know anything about the canon series, didn't care, or were learning incorrect information through "fandom telephone" and decided to take it upon themselves to rid the internet of anyone who didn't ship canon Gordon with their benrey-fied version of Barney "the right way." Can you really blame anyone for not wanting that to happen again?
Honestly, as long as the new content doesn't include too much conflicting lore/characterization related to canon HL characters and the fandom manages to behave itself, I'm excited to see more people get into Half Life. A lot of my current favorite HL artists and writers got into HL through hlvrai. This doesn't have to be a shitshow, but I don't think it's unreasonable to worry that it might become one.
TL;DR: Nobody really wants to "gatekeep" a 20 year old game series. We just want to be able to continue talking about the series and creating fanworks without being bombarded with unrelated content, death and doxxing threats, and baseless accusations that could ruin our actual, offline lives.

Propaganda Under Cut
Alana Bloom
she kissed will graham in s1 and dated hannibal in s2 so you can imagine how bad the fandom is to her. fun fact she's in a canon lesbian relationship now tho <3
The show literally does the yaoi treatment of victimisation for the benefit of the male leads to her. And then the fandom mistreats her
I'm not sure if this even counts but...Literally a victim of Yaoi along with several other characters in-series, but she got it almost the worst. The entire show is just people dying because the two male leads are OBSESSED with each other and can't be normal about anything. Alana Bloom, actual PhD of psychology and consultant to the FBI, got kissed by one guy, fucked and fed people-meant by the other, and pushed out a window by the murder husbands' forced-surrogate daughter. Like. Actual victim of several crimes caused by yaoi. She's probably one of the few examples of a Yaoi Victim overcoming and evolving past her yaoi-related trauma into a stronger person/character, though: She gets an entire character overhaul and a hot, millionairess for a wife. She kills a man with an eel. She becomes head of the BSHCI, effectively putting her in complete power over her jackass cannibal ex-bf. She does quite well. Unfortunately, the rest of her screen time is spent trying not to get killed in the ongoing fallout of Hannibal and Will's fucked up courtship, but hey. Can't have everything. I don't even know if I'm saying anything valid here: the fandom loves her, but I supposed her position outside of the Hannigram relationship relegates her to a non-subject in a lot of Hannigram-focused fanwork. She's an 'obstacle' to their relationship only in the sense that Will had a crush on her once that went nowhere and Hannibal started an actual relationship with her SPECIFICALLY to piss off Will. I guess she's also a more literal obstacle as Hannibal's jailer and Will's friend who's constantly pointing out to him that Morals exist and he should try having some of those, maybe.
Gwen
She stands in the way of Merthur, by far the most popular ship in the fandom. I haven’t seen it as much in recent years, but back in the days of fanfiction.net she got slut shamed so badly for having been romantically interested in three of the male characters over the course of the show, which is just... normal straight woman behavior, meanwhile Merlin crushed on pretty much every woman who even looked at him in the early seasons of the show and got no hate for that whatsoever. I barely even read Merthur fics (not because it’s m/m, just because certain aspects of their relationship don’t appeal to me) but the “Gwen is a slut” attitude was so pervasive across the fandom, even fics that weren’t explicitly anti-Gwen would “jokingly” call her a slut. I even saw a few fics demonizing her for having an affair with Lancelot despite the fact that SHE WAS ENCHANTED when that happened, and surprise surprise, Lancelot (who was also under the influence of magic) got none of that hate, and neither did Arthur, who got enchanted to fall in love with multiple women over the course of the show.
Canonically Arthur Pendragon's love interest and an important and interesting character in the show who's completely shoved aside and ignored in favour of the medieval bbc yaoi ship. At best they put her and Morgana in Lesbian Timeout (ie make them get together and then reduce them to wingwomen at best because god forbid we focus on the medieval bbc yuri). Justice for Gwen right now!
She is prince Arthur's love interest (eventually wife). Arthur is MADLY in love with her. He tells his tyrannical father he would give up his crown to be with her (she's a servant in the series). He forgives her cheating on him with Lancelot (!), which in the show is caused by an evil enchantment, but the characters never find out about it. He chooses her time and time again. His love for Gwen is literally never put into question. Many fans insist to this day that there was no chemistry between Gwen and Arthur compared to Arthur and Merlin. Arthur isn’t even particularly nice to Merlin most of the time! The funny thing is that Merlin himself ships these two so hard and does everything he can to help them get together!! Gwen & Arthur are adorable and too many fans were drunk on the yaoi fumes to see it. ARTHUR WAS A SIMP FOR GWEN.

there is something, and i'm saying this nicely, wrt to participating in fandoms & like. the idea of do you have to interact with the source material to enjoy a certain fandom or fanworks about it. and to me the answer is 'no'. there have been plenty of fandoms over the years that i have consumed fanworks of (either bc i didn't have time to watch the whole thing or lost my attention span, or it was a video game i didn't have a system for & i just gathered what information i could about it, or is was a show or something i didn't have easy access to (it was the early 00s, after all)). i admire fanworks' ability to draw people in and show them they could be interested in something they may have never even considered picking up before.
however if we're talking about creating for the fandom with no desire to interact at all with the source material, then, well. hm. with comics especially i totally get that there's a lot of different writers & characterizations & even the source material format can vary *so wildy* it can be easy to want to act like none of it matters because there's no true concrete unchanging linear canon. after all, any of the batman movies are a canon to draw from. so is batman '66. any of the animated shows as well. so is post-crisis continuity. so is rebirth continuity. comics fandom is a medium where you do have to do some cherry-picking when you form a preferred personal characterization of a character. and everyone will have their own interpretations & that's a general good! differences in opinion are a good thing. but if you're going to create for a fandom and address actual, concrete things that happen in canon then you're not actually dealing with a "well there's lots of different canon sources to choose from" thing. because now there *is* a specific, concrete thing that happened. if you're talking about bruce dying & returning that is a specific storyline that happened and is unchanging. if you're talking about the dick and tim fallout + resolution story from red robin #1-12 that is a specific thing that happened in one specific story that happened and is unchanging. there's not a batman '66 version of bruce getting lost in time. there's not a dcau version of the dick & tim red robin fight. it's not a thing where it's like "well who is tim drake anyways? there's lots of different versions of tim". that specific scenario happened to a *very specific* version of the character. if you're trying to address a very specific plotline, shouldn't there at least be some awareness of what actually went down in it? how do you know what you want to change and why you want to change it if you haven't experienced it for yourself?
and not that it can't be fun to play with how different versions of the characters might respond to plotlines they've never been party to & it certainly can be very fun to explore the tropes of certain plotlines with different versions of the characters, or mishmashed versions of different continuities of the characters. it's just. if you're trying to address or expand upon a certain, specific plot point that happened in a specific story to specific versions of the characters, then it's not so simple as "well there's no one true canon or canon for the character" bc the one true canon of that story event usually does in fact exist with the characterization it was written with. rebirth character differences existing now doesn't affect what happened then. those events are things that happened. idk.

I've been thinking about the fandom for The Arcana, and I have come to the conclusion that it's weird as hell. In my 20+ years participating in online fandom spaces, I've never seen a fandom quite like this one. I've seen drama, sure, but the core of most fandoms is a large community of people who love the same media and come together to celebrate it.
The Arcana fandom is not like that. From the very beginning we're more fractured, more factional, more fragile than most. You just have to look around at all the posts lamenting the death of the fandom every 2 weeks to see that something is really wrong here.
And I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of the canon. I am not saying this to criticize The Arcana, the devs, Dorian, or my fellow fans. I have just noticed that, as a piece of media, this game occupies a very unique space that is reflected in the way its fans interact with canon and with each other.
Welcome to the TED talk ain't none of y'all asked for.
Part of what makes this fandom unique is the evolution of fandom as a whole in the face of new types of media. As gaming becomes more mainstream and games themselves become more complex, the way we engage has necessarily changed in response.
Books/ movies/ shows are slightly more static in terms of canon than video games; canon is what it is and how you interact with what is there is largely to do with who you are. Everyone has the same base material to engage with, and that results in a certain amount of constancy. You can't interact with The Princess Bride in a way that changes the movie, only in ways that change your own perception. There isn't a whole lot of room for OCs without rewriting canon, so fans tend to consume OC-based fiction and art with the assumption that it's likely to be self-insert wish fulfillment fantasy time. That isn't always true, but there is a reason the term Mary Sue was coined.
Otome games and other choice-based video games make a very different fan environment, because the way you interact with canon is completely different. You have to build a character in order to interact with the story, and your choices directly impact your experience of canon.
But most western choice-based games are in the context of a larger RPG universe, e.g. Fallout or Dragon Age. There is a lot more to the story than the romance plot and so there's a lot more world to experience, contextualize, and build upon. There's certainly plenty of unhinged ShepxGarrus erotica, but there's also an abundance of fanworks that engage with the plot, the worldbuilding, and the canon characters with relatively little of the player's character needing to be on the page at all.
By contrast, most otome games that make it to English-speaking fandom spaces are Japanese. The romance is the point, but we also start from a place of wariness of our fellow fans. Because there's a huge difference between "harmless weeb" and "orientalist fetishizing creepo," and you know going in that both ends of the spectrum are possible, there is an amount of caution. We curate our space, looking for the creators who align with our expectations and values before we ever begin to interact.
The Arcana falls in a very unique and odd space because it is an otome, but made by Americans, with an attempt at a diverse fantasy cast. It's intended to be for American/ English-speaking audiences and is marketed as such. But making a romance game in America is challenging. Our way of approaching online media, especially smartphone-accessible media, is super fucked up, right? We are constantly trapped between the dichotomies of moral duty (Must Protect The Children) versus appealing to the customer base (Boom Anime Babes with Tig Ol Bitties). Because this is a mobile game, the developers can't make money if the game is removed from the app store, so they want it to be rated teen at the most. But the enticing bit, the thing that captures a potential fan's attention, is the flirtation and sexy implications. So from the jump they're in a weird space purely because they chose to make a mobile game instead of an indie video game released on Steam or similar.
So now you have an inherently split audience: mature adults who know they're getting into a potentially explicit romance game, and young adults/teens who have grown up in a more insulated internet culture where normal words are replaced with Orwellian doublespeak, like "unalive" and "spicy time".
THEN you add in the fact that the developers tried to build a diverse fantasy world, which is a fantastic idea both from an inclusionary standpoint and a broader audience standpoint. But because they didn't employ any actual sensitivity readers (did they think they didn't need them because fantasy can't have racism? Did they justify it as not being in the budget? Would love to know what's going on there) they fell right into a lot of the classic traps. We've been over these time and again, so I won't get into them here. Suffice to say, there has been Discourse. The presence of those issues means that more experienced fans will see those things and call them out, and that criticism causes even more of a split: the zealous apologists versus the critics. And critics can fall into two further categories: those who love the canon and want to see it do better, and the bitches who just love having something to bitch about.
Unfortunately, this combination means that there are inherently factions to this fandom, with staunchly opposed approaches to the media. So even before you enter a fandom space, it's already wildly fractured simply because of the nature of base canon.
THEN add to that the fact that this game is a dating sim. And to engage with a dating sim, you have to build a character and make choices based on that character. Some people will approach this work as storytelling, and some will approach it as an escapist expression of self. Neither of these ways of engaging with canon is wrong. Enjoying a dating sim as Me But Better is fun and completely valid! Engaging with a dating sim as a storyteller collaborating with the developers is fun and completely valid! But the two approaches are opposed in purpose, and that can make it difficult for the two types of fans to engage with one another's work.
Storytellers will well and truly invest in building a character. They may even build out communities, countries, cultures, and languages to make their world all the richer. They are investing hours of blood, sweat, and tears into Their Craft, pouring themselves into an opus of quality fanwork. Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to big feelings. Fan artists and writers may feel underappreciated if all they get out of their hard work is 2 likes and a gif of a wolf making AWOOGA eyes. They may feel that critique of their work is unwarranted, or that there's no point creating if no one will engage.
The romantics will engage with canon and fanwork from the perspective that "this is my fantasy romance time". Their OC isn't so much Original Character as Optimized Characteristics--that is, their perfect self. They are here for wish fulfillment fun times in the relative privacy and anonymity of the internet, and good for them! But that may mean that criticism of canon or their fan work feels excessively personal--it is very hard to detach the ego from the OC when that OC is a projection of your best self. They may view any critique as a personal attack as opposed to a good-faith attempt at engagement or conversation. This can lead to defensiveness, or to leaving the fandom outright if it feels too hostile.
Unfortunately all of these factions cause rifts in the community. This sometimes turns into fandom vigilantism, where people begin to see any fan who doesn't wholeheartedly agree with them as an enemy. I've seen friends experience bullying and cruelty over their OCs and their art. I've seen predators use the isolated nature of the fandom to further isolate and prey upon already vulnerable individuals. I've seen some really shitty stuff.
But I have also seen beautiful community flourish. I've made friends who feel more like family than my actual relatives. I've seen people work through struggles and overcome deliberate attempts to tear us apart, finding forgiveness and friendship along the way. I've seen myself and others grow because of the community and inspiration we found here. And I saw all of that because I found my people. And I hope, Arcana fandom, that the rest of you can find your people too.

Kara/Lee Fic LiveJournal Links
It occurred to me a while ago maybe not everyone is familiar with navigating LiveJournal, much less how to go about finding fic there. I figured it could be helpful to have a list of personal journals and communities to make that easier, or just to have on hand. What's included on this list: * Authors (prolific and/or widely rec'd, some with partial AO3 archiving); * K/L Communities (great sources for other fics and fanworks); * General Battlestar Galactica (2003) fic communities; * Friend-Locked and Deleted Journals (for reference and archived links, if applicable); * Authors that moved all their fics to AO3 (not linked, also for reference). All that being said, this post is neither a rec list or comprehensive. Mainly, I wanted it to be a point of entry for new fans or fans who aren't familiar with LiveJournal. With that in mind, if I forgot a community or user you think should be here, let me know and I'll edit the post to include them. Let me know if there are any issues/questions!
If you see your username on this list and you'd like to be taken off of it, just let me know and I'll edit the post, and likewise if you have your fics listed on LiveJournal and you'd like me to link to them.
Note: You might notice reference to a specific archive for Kara/Lee fic, called Fallout Shelter, as you explore these links. The bad news is that the site is offline. Unfortunately, the site wasn't archived very well either, so pretty much all the fics that were exclusively archived there are gone. The good news is that the archive was a repository for fics originally posted on the ApolloStarbuckFic yahoo group, which was saved during the massive archival effort to backup YG back in 2019/2020. The even better news is that the data for that group might become available some time next week. I'll make a post explaining how to go about sifting through all the messages if/when the data becomes available. Keep in mind though that I haven't seen this data yet, so I have no idea what, if anything, is saved in the group's messages and files. Still, though, definitely something to be excited about!

Unlisted Fandom Challenge - 2024
In our earlier Numbers post we shared the top ten spots for the unlisted fandoms. Below is the full list of the remaining write-in fandoms - yes, all 105 of them.
For the first twenty, a single additional signup will move them up to join the tie for third place. If ANY of them should manage four additional signups, they'll snag the lead.
Know folks who work in these fandoms? Share our signup post and encourage them to participate —we'd love to have them join us raising funds for great causes via the creation of awesome fanworks. As ever, we welcome even more new fandom write-ins, too. (But please do not use the ' | ' character in the fandom name - or elsewhere in your signup form!)
Putting the list under a cut for length -

So as we all know, with the exception of last year, the Rayllum corner has a habit of having a Rayllum month in July, on account of both our kiddos’ birthdays falling within two weeks of each other (the 15th and 31st respectively). However, with S5 Ocean also dropping sometime in July, I thought it’d be prudent to schedule something more tentative.
The technical dates I’m considering are June 17th to July 1st, featuring two weeks of Rayllum angst -- I mean goodness! However, I could see merit in pushing it back further if we get a later month release date. Like previous Rayllum month events, it’s two days for each prompt, giving you more of a chance to enjoy all the lovely fanworks as well as prepare your own! Fanart, fanfiction, headcanon lists, analysis, prediction posts, rewatches, playlists, and anything and everything else is more than welcome! I did my best to tailor the prompts to the specific post-S4, pre-S5 hype, but as always these are suggestions! Anything that fits the “s5 speculation” Rayllum vibe is 100% encouraged.
Sunday June 17th: Flowers
Tuesday June 19th: Possession
Thursday June 21st: Reconciliation
Saturday June 23rd: Swords / Coins
Monday June 25th: First Kiss (Again)
Wednesday June 27th: End of the World
Friday June 29th: Water
NSFW and more explicit/violent content is definitely welcome so long as it is tagged accordingly. While there are lots of possible angst factors to explore in the upcoming season - TTM fallout, angsting over Runaan, dark magic, and possession - fluff is also very very welcome! Tags for the event will be #Rayllum week 2023 (with spaces) and #Rayllum’s bad vibes rodeo (with spaces).
If you have any questions my ask box is open and I hope we all have a lovely time creating, planning, and enjoying this final S5 hurrah!

one of the best things about fanworks for ttrpgs or games that let you make a main character like fallout, skyrim, or baldur's gate, is that you are practically if not literally encouraged to just share your funky lil oc with the world and i think that is beautiful

Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Alana Bloom
she kissed will graham in s1 and dated hannibal in s2 so you can imagine how bad the fandom is to her. fun fact she's in a canon lesbian relationship now tho <3
I guess she's also a more literal obstacle as Hannibal's jailer and Will's friend who's constantly pointing out to him that Morals exist and he should try having some of those, maybe
Maya Fey
OKAY SO She's definitely NOT the love interest coz she's like 16 n he's 24 or smth but in literally all fandom she's just... the wingwoman. that's all. EVEN WHEN SHE'S IN A LESBIAN RELATIONSHIP IT'S IN THE BACKGROUND N SHE'S SUPPORTING THE YAOI GROWN ASS MEN..... it's horrible... detestable... she's a main character... she has ARCS..... and yet.. her own most popular ship tag is just.. her n her gf as background yuri who are supporting and wingwomaning the fucking main guys. it's a tragedy. Maya Fey would make Phoenix Wright buy her burgers everytime he made her listen to his love problems and then she'd tell him that every complaint he makes will cost another burger. SHE WOULD NEVER BE SUPPORTING YURI..
Phoenix’s best friend and partner in solving crimes. She often gets shunted aside by the fandom, reduced to Phoenix/Edgeworth cheerleader and matchmaker.
okay i wouldnt say shes exactly mistreated, shes pretty well liked in the fandom, HOWEVER shes always seen as like an accessory to wrightworth, her only role being to make jokes about how in love they are etc. i feel like a lot of people ignore her depth and backstory to just use her as a tool in wrightworth stories. she plays a very important role in the games as well and has been through a lot, and has always been helpful to wright, so she deserves to be more than the setup to a joke about wrightworth
