vocaloids (and all similar non-Yamaha-owned vocal synths) are bad. all of them.

It's a mockery of the human voice. Frye from Splatoon 3 of all things is the closest we will ever get to having any interesting vocal technique in a voice synth bank. Singing styles around the world are so interesting and take so much skill and you abandon them for a glorified MIDI file? I also blame them for the rise of AI-generated covers, because they first started the devaluing of the human voice and the usage of it as an instrument - a really boring one that will never know advanced or diverse technique. Congrats, Miku made Minecraft, now all of SpongeBob has sang Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. At least the SpongeBob characters have distinct and interesting voices.

i didn't expect my submission to gain as much traction as it did, i thought it was lukewarm at best. i thought there were more vocaloid haters out there. this is tumblr, though, so i guess not. still think vocaloid is ass though.

i will say, it might add context to my take that i myself am a singer and have natural perfect pitch. while i haven't sang in any professional capacity, i've still done some voice training and lots of lower level performances. i have very strong feelings about singing, and hold what the human voice can do in high regard.

i also have a better ear for picking up smaller things in the human voice (re: natural perfect pitch) and the difference between humans and vocaloid is extremely striking to me. no amount of tuning can make a vocaloid not sound lifeless to me, because i will never, ever hear a human voice, and instead of letting the lead of the song Not Be Vocals - which has never been a novel concept - they HAVE to put the voice bank in.

also, re: "frye isn't a voice bank dumbass", congrats! you took away something i felt was actually interesting! god i wish more people knew about more singing styles that they couldn't easily replicate!

while now i know that AI voices are not a continuation of vocaloid, sorry, still think it's bad, go to hell and learn to compose a song without lyrics.

Honestly i can imagine them all just being pissed drunk before attempting to sing the song😂. i know fersure the SHE trio would require more liquid courage for it (heck even to join/start a kareoke sesh!)

Shane gives of major Kareoke Tito (uncle) vibes~. Yknow that one tito who specifically sings “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and has a bunch of classic rock songs under his belt. He’s not good at singing perse but he can at least carry a tune. He and Sebastian would totally connect with singing Misery. but like Shane vaguely knows the song (he’s heard it on radio a bajillion times but he doesnt know the name of the song so its not quite on his playlists) so he when he’s super sloshed and can barely read the screen, he tries to sing it from memory and misses a couple of the words. but hey! at least he knows the chorus and is in tune.

Meanwhile Sebastian has Misery “secretly” on his go to playlist. He doesnt admit it (the songs is too main stream and overplayed but he stumbled upon a vocaloid cover and rest is history.) He definitely always chooses the song every kareoke sesh (although not his first choice) and he’s passionate about it even has a little performance too(lots of head bangs, fist pumps and that classic 2000s disney knees bent together, feet wide apart moment)! For his duet with shane he’s the first to shed a lil tear and that gets shane going and they cry through most of the song in their own lil misery world ignoring the chaos around them.

Sam is a fucking menace for singing CPR and I do agree He and Abigail would go off on Reese’s Puff BUT i can definitely imagine being commited to singing CPR (we all know he’d awkwardly twerk). Especially if it was to troll on Harvey who probably thought it was a wholesome song about doing CPR at a specific BPM. 😂

Harvey good lird poor harvey! He’s probably the most sober out of everyone. It doesnt help that he’s no light weight + lowkey becomes designated baby sitter everytime (he’s soooooooo going charge them extra in the morning if they come stumbling into his clinic asking for some hangover cure). He was so excited about adding a new song to CPR tempo list he was gonna teach at the nex first aid classes!! Who would have thought that a singer with a cute wholesome name like Cupcakke was just so… sooooo SCANDALOUS!!! I'll just throw a bunch of different stuff from over the years in here. My work has always kind of been split in two, between the more academic/"fine arts" work and the more highly stylized, comic book-type work that I make.

The earliest stuff I have is unfortunately just from when I was 12. I'm sure there is art my grandma kept somewhere from when I was younger than that, but I've yet to see it.

So for now these are the earliest drawing of mine that exists on the internet, I believe... This would've been roughly 2008 or 2009.

I was both highly inspired by drawings of anime girls on the internet and Dali. And also Jhonen Vasquez.

This was around 13 because y'know. Vocaloid.

Then these were all from the latter half of high school, so anywhere between 16-17 where I was doing work in school and fanart/original art in my free time.

I was doing a LOT of these loose gesture drawings every day, and then got into acrylic painting as a senior (though I didn't pursue it through college like I expected to)...

... And a WHOOLE lot of these digital drawings in my free time. Ironically this was also probably the last time I really tried my hand at digital painting, too.

I continued this trend through college, where my life was balanced between digital and traditional art, and even then became a balance between digital drawings, ink drawings, charcoal gestures and printmaking (plus whatever else I was doing at the time, so like... Metals/jewelry casting and wood engraving. Unfortunately I never got to try my hand at blacksmithing, though I really wanted to).

After college things steadily dropped off, so it got to a point where I've ONLY been doing the fandom/comics side of things and over the years I've really found myself burning out on it. That's why I'm trying to regain that balance again.

"IDK if you've played BOTW, so I'm going to start from the beginning. I'm not the best at explaining tho, so bear with me please. Sorry its a bit long! OK to start, this is a dungeon theme. The dungeon is Divine Beast Vah Medoh, which is (was) piloted by the Rito (a race of bird people) champion Revali. Now, Revali is a bit of, what we call in the industry, an asshole. He's super jealous of Link (MC, who has a lot of trauma from being expected to BE the best so i find this ironic) and ridiculously arrogant. Once the main bad guy strikes, he rushes to his divine beast to he can help Link (which he's. not really *thrilled* about, because he wants to be the one to take down the big bad.). However, the big bad had a plan to counteract this, and poisoned the divine beasts with malice, his own special kinda evil goop. He then makes a malice monster for each champion to fight, and Revali does eventually die to it. 100 years later, Link is coming back to unpoison the divine beasts and free the champion's souls. This entire story kinda fucks me up (even if Revali isn't my favorite), but also!!! the fact that there's an SOS code in the song!!! meaning that Revali called for help because he thought he was going to die!!! and his is the latest out of all the divine beast's themes meaning he really didn't want to get help but he accepted he needed it and developed and he still died!!!!"
