Potatoes and Mr. Collins
I probably won’t be the first person to complain about this, nor the last, but why oh why do people feel the need to post so many memes about potatoes and Mr. Collins?
I am aware that this happened:
and I even accept that it’s a fine interpretation of this narration:
“The dinner, too, in its turn, was highly admired” (Ch 13)
But here is the thing, even if Mr. Collins said this, in the novel, IT DOESN’T MEAN HE LIKES POTATOES!!!
Mr. Collins says what people want to hear. He flatters them (and not particularly well either). Lady Catherine likes it, it works for him. He even has Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Philips all happy with his delicate compliments at one point. But that doesn’t mean that he believes anything he says.
He praised the whole dinner because that’s what he does. That’s how he makes people like him. If you had given him fried rice he would have said the exact same thing.
What bothers me about the potato memes is that they are missing the whole point. They show Mr. Collins drooling over/obsessively loving potatoes or reading the history of potatoes etc. Mr. Collins’s compliments say almost nothing about his actual preferences.
Rant over.
(and don't get me started on Mary and Fordyce...)
