A Present for a Vamp

@darlin-collins gave me the good idea to write this and i was excited writing it. Do enjoy!

“There's another store nearby, called ‘Meemaw and Meemaw’ it's like” He paused, thinking for the right words. “It's a vamp shop but it also has stuff that grandmas make, blankets, toys, good hats, the whole 9-yards. They've been together a long time now, 200 somethin’ years.” Sam hummed, turning his steering wheel so the car turned as they drove through the down of Daliah. It was almost a different place during the night, streets lit up with lights from the late night shops or the streetlights. It was beautiful. 

“Betsy and Evalyn are sweet though, if you ever do go into their shop.”

Darlin’ looked at their phone. Yep, this is the place. The sign was big and in curvy letters it said ‘Meemaw and Meemaw’. They bit their lip and looked at the door, the welcome sign had southern hospitality written all over it. ‘Well, come on in!’ It read. They thought about what could be on the back when the door opened, startling them out of their mind. Two girls, a freelancer and a dreamwalker, apologized to them and kept walking. 

While the door was still open Darlin’ slipped through. It was an adorable store, tapestries hung up, a wall of brightly colored yarns, toys lined up excitedly waiting to go home and meet its new friend and of course hats. The hats werent small, they were big brimmed sunhats, meant to keep the sun from touching sensitive skin. 

“Well hello there!” A woman behind the counter said, her accent was deeper than Sams. Darlin’ waved, still in awe at the shop. “We don't get many shifters ‘round ‘ere.” The woman said as Darlin’ walked closer. The woman was bright eyed and vibrant. Her sweater was blue and clipped on was a small name tag in cursive that wrote ‘Evie’. 

“Do you really not get any shifters? I bet they would love this place.” They smiled at her, Evie smiled back, her dimples showing. 

“We open later in the day, busy durin’ openin’ hours.” Evie laughed, turning and fixing some of the yarns that were sticking out of their respective places.

“I bet. My mate tells me good stuff about this place. He’s a vampire too.” Darlin’ looked up at the woven tapestry that was hanging above the yarn shelf. 

“Oh do tell.” Evie turned around, placing her hands on her hips. “Humor an old lady won't cha?” 

“Oh uhm, Sam. Sam Collins.” Darlin’ said nervously. Evies eyes widened, another woman peaked her head out from the back.

“Sam Collins? Well why didn't you say so honey!” Evie smiled, her dimples returning. “Betsy you hear that? Our boy Sammy has someone!” She turned her head and looked at the woman whose head was peeking out. Betsy was slightly taller than Evie when she walked out and stood next to her. Her hair was covered with a green bandana, keeping it out of her face most likely. Unlike Evie who was vibrant and bright, Betsy was simple and soft. 

“Oh speakin’ of him!” Evie perked up, reaching behind the counter and pulling out a bag, setting it on the flat surface. “This is for him, Betsy made it a while back.” She hummed and Darlin’ looked at the bag, tilting their head at it.

“It's a stuffed animal, more accurately a kangaroo with a joey.” Betsy said, holding her hands behind her back. Darlin’ pulled the stuffed animal out, it was in fact a kangaroo. A soft crocheted kangaroo and a joey poking out of its pouch. “I made them when we found out what happened with his progeny and his progeny's progeny.” 

“We’ve taken care of that boy since he turned,” Evie patted the kangaroo, “He's stubborn but I live with stubbornness.” She nodded to Betsy, Betsy rolled her eyes and bumped her hips against Evies.

“It's not stubbornness when you are a danger to yourself, honey.” 

“Uh huh.” Evie hummed and nodded. “I doubt you came in ‘ere looking to talk ‘bout vamp gossip, sweetpea. Lookin’ for anything in particular?” Evie smiled and walked from behind the counter. “I’d love to help you look for somethin’ that boy might like.” 

“I'd like that too, date night shit, yknow?” Darlin’ said, setting the kangaroo back in the bag, holding it by the handles. Evie nodded and walked around slowly, eyeing each animal that lined the wall. 

“Perfect.” Evie said, pulling a stuffed armadillo down. There was a small star on his forehead. “Ain’t he a cutie?” She looked at Darlin’ who nodded, a small smile on their face. Evie nodded and held the animal gently as she walked back. Betsy was still at the counter writing something down. 

“We got a good one goin’ to a good home, Honeypie.” Evie smiled and sat the armadillo down, walking around to the other side. Betsy nodded and pressed a few things on the cash register. 

“Your total is 13 even.” Betsy read off as Evie set the armadillo in a bag. Darlin’ nodded, pulling their card out and paying. Once the transaction was complete Evie set the receipt inside the bag. 

“And because you purchased somethin’ we have a good deal for you. A hug for the low price of free 99.” Evie grinned and Darlin smiled, taking the bag.

“I'd like that, a lot actually.” They said. Evie clapped and walked out from behind the counter, hugging Darlin’ tightly. She was warm and smelt like cookies, it was comforting. 

“Thank you for comin’, it means the world to us. And tell Sam to call us.” She let go and rubbed their arms. Darlin’ nodded, “Yes ma’am.” 

“Well get goin’ you got’a vamp who loves ya at home.” Betsy said, smiling. Darlin’ rolled their eyes.

“Im going im going, I’ll tell my pack about this place. Thank you, so much.” They held both bags in one hand, waving to them as they left the shop.

“Did you really go there? How are they doin’?” Sam said, resting his hand on his cheek as Darlin’ ate. They shrugged, chewing. 

“They’re doing good, they told me to tell you to call them.” They hummed, sliding the bags to him. “For you, cowboy.” They sat back in their chair. Sam rolled his eyes and opened one of the bags, pulling out the kangaroo and joey. His brows furrowed in confusion.

“Evie said that it's for your progenies. Betsy made them a while back.” Darlin stood up, taking their plate to the sink. Sam nodded and opened the second bag, taking the armadillo out.

“Let me guess, for Vincent?” He gave them a smug look.

“Nope for you actually, Evie helped me pick it out.” They turned around and leaned on the counter. Sam looked taken aback for a moment then smiled softly.

“Darlin’-”

“Nope, no buts or anything like that.” They crossed their arms, “You do so much for me so it's my turn, this is a present for you and only you. You literally tended to my wounds and gave me a key to your place and you draw the line at a stuffed animal?” They scrunched their nose at him, playfully. Sam stood up, holding the armadillo close to his chest as he walked over to them. 

“Thank you Darlin’.” Sam said, kissing them gently. 

“What do you plan on naming him? Can't be nameless forever.” Darlin’ held his face, rubbing their thumb on his slight stubble.

“Thomas. Looks like Thomas, don’t he?” Sam looked down at the armadillo, rubbing his ear gently. Darlin’ snickered, nodding their head.

“He’s your son, honey.”

“If he's my son will you be his other parent?” 

“Absolutely.”

What's a trope you find incredibly underrated?

I finished Don't Want You Like a Best Friend by Emma R. Alban and, no spoilers, but this book was everything! I absolutely love the hijinks Gwen and Beth come up with to get their parents together so they don't have to get married themselves. The parent trapping was ✨️immaculate✨️ and definitely an underrated trope. And getting dual POV made this so much more enjoyable!

Mixing my love of historical romance, queer discovery stories, and badass ladies, this was an absolute joy of a book.

The cast of characters was also great. Aside from the main duo, Albie was a stand-out to me. Same with Meredith. They were both so accepting of Gwen and Beth and probably realized they had a thing for each other before the girls did.

I can't say it enough, but I absolutely adored this book and cannot wait to read the sequel! Highly recommend for fans of authors Evie Dunmore and Manda Collins, as well as Bridgerton and the Parent Trap (obvi).

Evelyn didn't say much usually, truth be told the woman barely spoke at all, choosing only to at times catch the eyes of her female companion and from that quiet interaction apparently an entire conversation was to be had with eyebrows and varying sizes of pupils and twitches of the mouth. Ah, one of theseb- right Adam would just have to give them privacy then and focus on someone else.

It was rude to "eavesdrop" after all....even if Evie - err Evelyn did seem a bit...flustered?

Hm, interesting, that wasn't a - oh my god why me go away(!)- flustered either - Adam was err... unfortunately ( or fortunately) quite familiar with the latter.

Zari nodded sagely just then, with an affirmative, mmhm, before her own dark eyes flitted over to him and - aw shit he was caught- that little nurse with a bite was going to chew him out later and fuck man, when Zari was pissed at you it was just like being scolded by both your fifth grade teacher and a damn drill sergeant.

Ugh, his life was going to be hell. Kyle threw him a sympathetic glance but also made no moves to rescue Adam from his predicament.

Traitor.

See if Adam smoothed over the next couples spat when Collin vents to him on patrol later.

Footsteps interrupted him and a shadow loomed and...oh.

That would do it.

"Mr. Caputo I presume? I hear you were part of the security detail last night- can you tell me how a restricted area was left open for a civilian to wander in?" Crisp. Polite.

But seething .

Second Class Science officer Noah Harrison* stared down on Adam like a gnat he was about to crush in his fingers and the developing black and blue splosh around his right eye probably didn't help Adam's case.

Noah...had always kind of been a bit of a... Peacock honestly. He was not going to like the fact his face was "blemished" because Adam had been well... A moron.

So being the man with common sense ( no really he was - don't listen to the haters ) - he gave the officer a smart salute.

"yes sir - I have absolutely no idea what happened I was on the midnight shift I had only just clocked in two minutes before the incident occurred therefore this is not my fault - sir!" He beamed.

Not a hundred percent a lie...

But not enough to fool this particular science officer because oh had that eyebrow had begun to twitch.

"Sir." Both men paused, Noah especially seemed to stiffen at Evie's approach. "It really wasn't his fault, I got turned around, this place is huge, I haven't gotten my bearings yet." She hugged her arm, still bandaged. "Adam was just trying to help me get back." "

Noah frowned more, "And why, Miss Noire were you even out at that hour?"

"Because I prefer the night. It's quiet. Sorry it won't happen again, just don't chew Adam out he didn't do anything wrong, the door was already open when he found me anyway."

"You're sure?"

"Do I look like the type to go poking around restricted areas for fun?" She countered.

"...no." Noah mumbled before puffing his shoulders, "Regardless, Miss Noire- I have to ask that you stay away from restricted areas from now on, they are...off limits for a reason!"

"Well maybe whoever designed this glorified sardine can should have thought of that before putting a door so close to the damm library!"

"Gee you think." Adam muttered but he was ignored. Rude but story of his life.

The standoff was on and all the setting needed was a piece of tumbleweed to drift past the two of them as they continued just glaring at each other.

Then again, he also didn't exist at the moment, oh no the whole world had melted away, leaving nothing but the young woman currently glaring at Noah Harrison* with that frigid "Evie" stare that had clearly frozen the man in place.

"You...have a point." The officer finally mumbled again before clearing his throat. "Right well... Mr. Caputo while your methods were unorthodox they got the job done so I won't be telling the Captain about this."

Adam jumped, "Wait you're not?!"

"I don't see a reason to, it was a close call but it was also entirely at the fault of the ship and whoever was last down there, they didn't follow safety protocol." He scowled. "Which I will take care of right now, excuse me." His voice lowered and Adam felt the hairs at the back of his neck stand up though the firm grip on his arm kept him from tumbling down like a dope though, at least he could be petrified with dignity. Huh for being a terrifying stick in the mud at least Noah wasn't a jerk. Good to know.

Satisfied Adam wasn't going to end up up a sad puddle on the ground Noah turned to Evie now.

"Miss Noire, I'm glad to see you unhurt." He murmured. "But next time you find you've lost your way around the sardine can... Come find me instead. Unlike Mr. Caputo, I have a sense of direction." He nodded in her direction before turning on his heel and just striding away.

Okay never mind he's still a jackass.

Didn't matter though, oh Adam saw that pretty clearly in that moment.

And tch...

Here we go again...
