recs (he or contemp) where the hero just assumes the worst about the heroine? Kind of like those trashy harlequins where dude thinks heroines the absolute worst the biggest brat in the universe but he ends up being so wonderfully wrong?
I mean, the big obvious one off the top of my head is It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas. Westcliff never likes Lillian. Like, even when you read Secrets of a Summer Night, he thinks this girl is TRASH. Mostly because he wants to dive into that trash like a raccoon.
When the Duke Loved Me by Lydia Lloyd has a great setup there. The hero and heroine had this great makeout when they were both in disguise at this party years before, but it's interrupted by his friends who are like "NOOOOO STOOOOOP" because she's actually from this family that is mortal enemies with his family, particularly because her aunt and his dad hooked up years ago and caused SCANDAL AND RUINATION. So the hero, who is hideously attracted to her, thinks she's similar and is just out to get him. Her opinion of him is... not much higher.
A Secret Love by Stephanie Laurens has an interesting variation on this. The hero and heroine really dislike each other, and he has just no real rationale for it because they grew up together (the actual rationale: she got hot as they grew up and he sublimated this development into hatred). However, because of his Special Skills of Financial Investigation (all Cynster dudes have Special Skills, just go with it) the heroine puts on a veil, pretends to be a widow, and enlists him to help her. And he lOOOOVES her as a widow.
In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint by Alexandra Vasti has the hero think the heroine is painted HUSSY because she drew dirty pictures of him... but he's also into it and just can't admit it. In Which Winnie Halifax is Utterly Ruined also has the hero develop an initially bad impression of her. Mostly because she's pretending to be his wife.
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy has a hero who haaaates the American heroine because she's basically inherited his castle and is like "you are art historian and dumb with money, we are going to offer paid tours of this castle to financially justify its existence" and he's like *SCANDALIZED GASP*. It's very funny.
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe, of course, has Lockwood absolutely despise Nellie after their initial oceanic makeout. Mostly because, in his defense, she's constantly coming in to ruin his attempts at securing a sugar mama. The "you'll NEVER MARRY MY FRIEND"/"well guess what??? that just ensures I'll marry her EVEN HARDER" exchange lives rent-free in my brain.
Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret features a hero who thinks the heroine stole his magical Arthurian cookbook, leading to him pursuing her across Europe for JUSTICE!!! (not only for justice)
Once More, My Darling Rogue by Lorraine Heath is a retelling of the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn classic overboard, in which the hero hates the bratty, bitchy heroine so much (with good reason lol) when he rescues her from a river and realizes she has amnesia, he literally just tells her she's his housekeeper as revenge. I mean, it's supposed to be a BIT and it goes on much longer than he expected. But he DOES make her wash his back, and that DID make me laugh a lot. TW: discussions of childhood sexual abuse.
Wicked in His Arms by Stacy Reid has a cold, uptight earl (?) who hates the heroine on sight because he thinks she's, again, a hussy. He's such a dick to her. This is also the one, however, where he deflowers her impetuously in a closet and then chases her when she runs like, crying into the hallway, and then they run into his mom and everyone is like "well. this situation is extremely obvious" so bOOM MARRIED.
After Dark with The Duke by Julie Anne Long has the older, dignified, war hero duke hate the younger, seemingly-flighty opera singer heroine because she's a scandalous woman who recently came off of two men fighting a duel over here. It's not classy!!!! Then he's mean to her and the owners of the boarding house where they're staying force him to teach her Italian in apology. And. He realizes things.
Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas, of course, is building off the frankly irrational mutual hatred Leo Hathaway and Catherine Marks have had for each other ever since she entered the scene in Seduce Me at Sunrise. Tbh, the preceding books are good and worth reading (especially Seduce, one of my favorite Kleypases) but it's also just so fun to read Leo being like "I hate Marks so much, she's such a killjoy, I shall sketch her wearing nothing simply because".
Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyts (a top Maiden Lane for me) has Asa and Eve just kind of hate each other because she's soooo proper, and he's soooo note, and it's actually really lovely to see him realize why she is the way he is, and melt because he's so empathetic, actually, and A DEEPLY GOOD MAN. ASA MAKEPEACE. UGH. I just love that both Makepeace heroes are God Tier.
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath, of course, has Jack Dodger be like "Olivia is so cold and so uptight and has such a giant stick up her ass" and over time he realizes she's actually a delightfully zany freak.
The Worst Guy by Kate Canterbary, of course, stars surgeons who really just severely dislike each other in a very childish way that I somehow found incredibly hilarious. He thinks she's the WORST, and he's honestly wrong about a lot of things... then they're forced to go through work counseling, basically, which leads to them casually taking their anger out on each other through hookups.
You, Again by Kate Goldbeck. It's a retelling of When Harry Met Sally, basically--and to be fair, the hero has his reasons lol. Because the heroine is hooking up with the girl he's trying to date seriously in the beginning. BUT IN HER DEFENSE!!! The relationship wasn't serious at that point. Anyway, over the years of course they become friends... with sizzling tension the whole time.
Pride and Protest by Nikki Payne is a Pride and Prejudice retelling wherein this billionaire meets a woman protesting against his company, and he initially thinks she's basically a poser, but gradually he realizes she's the real deal... and naturally becomes obsessed.
Managed by Kristen Callihan has the hero just hate the heroine... somewhat understandable reasons, tbh. But there's more to her than what meets the eye! He's this very strait-laced manager of a rock band, and he hires her to be the photographer/social media manager.. But he also has insomnia and can't sleep WITHOUT HER IN THE BED LOL.
Eyes on Me by Sara Cate has the hero dislike the heroine because she's his annoying stepsister! That's all. But then she turns out to be into camming, and oops he ends up watching, and it kinds spirals from there.
American Royalty by Tracey Livesay features a stuffy British prince assigned to the task of putting on this big charity concert... Which leads to him pulling in this popular American rapper. There's a lot of clashing because she's confident and doesn't take any shit from him, and of course he's doing some attraction sublimation. It also has a direct sequel, The Duchess Effect, which is similarly so good!
Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert features leads who are both on the spectrum, which is great. She's trying to become more independent, so she ends up working at this B&B he runs. But she also like, lowkey hits him with her car. And is kind of wild and off the wall. And he can't stand her. YET...

Doodles I did while watching Pride and Predjudice 1995 with my roommates of very silly self indulgent Second Gen story ( soley made really to drive Mr Darcy to distraction)
George Wickham Jr. is invited to Christmas at Pemberly because Wickham and Lydia are basically on the run from their creditors again and Lizzie isn't about to let her nephew starve on the streets during winter no matter the relations between the parents.
And turns out to be a good thing they did as all the little Bennett cousins go out to skate on the frozen lake and young Silas Darcy falls through the ice, and George being the oldest and strongest manages to save him.
The boys recuperate together during the rest of the holidays and become fast friends--much to the concern of Mr Darcy--and that friend continues into their adult years where it starts to turn into something more...
(I know they're cousins they're also fictional and adults and it was legal then-- even if not for necessarily this circumstance--and they're gay they ain't having any bio kids anyway )

I am a human author telling human stories to other humans. Supporting human artists to illustrate these human stories is the only logical and ethical choice.
@thistlearts is my cover artist. He did incredible paintings for Mr Warren's Profession, Oak King Holly King, Tales from Blackthorn Briar, and Fiorenzo.
@lauravian_arts designed adorable stickers for Oak King Holly King. (Available now in my etsy - and perhaps soon, a Kickstarter?)
Collaborating with human artists is a joy and a dream.
AI is unethical, illegal, and dangerous theft from real human beings. No excuses.
(And thank you to @noahhawthorneauthor for inspiring this post!)

The Flower Shop of Lemoore | A Bob Floyd Fictional Work
Words: 1421
Sneakpeek:
“I know what they mean,” Bob was staring at her without a word.
“Love and Passion,” She pointed out, “Usually it’s used between couples to express love or the fiery passion they have for eachother. It’s funny because every couple I saw with these flowers during valentine's day, broke up.” She snorted.
Flower seven out of twenty

“So, was there a reason you decided to run in the pelting snow and ice just to hand me a carnation?” Y/N’s eyes were on the glass vase the flower sat in with the other flowers Bob had handed her over the weeks.
“Well, you haven’t shown up for a couple days since you ran out the store and this elderly lady kept telling me about her love of carnations and it made me want to make sure if you were okay,” Bob knew the reason he went after her, but he wouldn’t share such a feeling.
“So, you decided to harass my bus driver and find my address.” She raised a brow, running her fingers through her hair. “Sounds like a sketchy plan, Floyd.” She reached forward, finally getting a detailed glance at the bright red piercing Carnation. “What does it mean?”
“Remembrance, Regret and Admiration.” Bob spoke, getting up from the chair he was sitting in to stand beside Y/N while she was admiring every detail, “Are you ever going to tell me why you weren’t coming to the flower shop?” He looked at her with these wide begging blue eyes of his, she took one look away from the flower and went red in the face from this look she had never seen in his eyes ever in her life.
“I had a family accident happen, I didn’t feel well enough to go to work and then the flower shop so I took a few days off,” She shrugged, “I didn’t think it would affect you that much.”
Well, it did, her disappearance made him think she was just like every other customer, they would come till they weren’t pleased and throw the flower on the ground only to wilt and die. Bob’s father had warned him about trying the whole ‘What’s your flower’ thing again with Y/N, but he trusted her.
“I got worried,”
“I can tell,” She had a bright smile on her face before she started laughing, “I don’t think I’ve ever had a man like you run to my house in such freezing weather,” that reminded her. “I should probably make you something warm to drink, did you want some hot chocolate?”
Bob perked up and nodded, nothing could get the Floyd family over to someone’s house unless the promise of hot chocolate was made.
Y/N smiled before pushing up his glasses, “Good, that’s all I have right now.” She said, chuckling as she stepped away to go make him a mug.
Bob wouldn’t question her about the accident that happened recently, but he would take the opportunity of her in the kitchen to snoop around a bit. Her house was small but cozy, it had a warm autumn feel to it, the oranges and warm greens gave Bob that comfort.
She had a small record player with a small stack of recent records, but Bob enjoyed the classics though. He felt like she lived in a cottage of sorts, the fake flowers and plants all about, aside from the flowers he had given her. He felt like she was the type of person that could only put her time into one thing.
He was almost amazed at how clean it seemed to be, not even his own apartment was this clean. She didn’t have any pets to keep her company, just her and her TV that probably kept her busy when she didn’t have to work or think.
It almost saddened Bob that she was alone, that she had to deal with people bugging her and him most of all with his flowers. Bob stopped snooping when he heard the pan get taken off the heat, he took his time to go back to her dining room.
She came back with a small floral painted mug she had made when she was into pottery. “Here you go, Floyd,” He took the mug from her hands looking at it curiously before taking a sip. “Yes, I made it.” She answered exactly what he was thinking which almost made him spit out his drink.
“Seriously?” He asked after he had finished his first sip, “You made the mug?” He questioned, “I used to take pottery and never got the hang of it like this,” He smiled awkwardly.
“My dad used to teach me, so it was nice having someone that wouldn’t yell at you for a stupid mistake every time, my old teachers were too grumpy and I couldn’t get back into the groove of things.” She hummed, walking towards the cabinet, “I did have something for you, Floyd,”
Bob perked up, what could she possibly have for him, he was busy taking another sip of her hot chocolate to really focus on what she was pulling out. He pulled the cup away from his lips to be greeted with a bright red Tulip. He froze staring at the tulip, part of him hoped what kind of meaning this meant.
“I found one of these while I was out and since I hadn’t gone to the shop to actually hand it to you, I figured this was the perfect time.”
Bob placed down the mug carefully, reaching out and slowly taking the flower from her small smooth hands, he was staring at it. The smell of Tulips was something he always admired, it was a sweet smelling flower, something he couldn’t ever erase from his mind. He looked back at her to be greeted with her pushing up his glasses once more.
“I know what they mean,” Bob was staring at her without a word.
“Love and Passion,” She pointed out, “Usually it’s used between couples to express love or the fiery passion they have for eachother. It’s funny because every couple I saw with these flowers during valentine's day, broke up.” She snorted.
“Not everyone can base their life off a flower,” Bob commented, still holding the flower, “But, why did you choose this flower?”
“Consider it a second wind, I love being around you Floyd.. Even when I couldn’t be recently, I guess the passion came through when you arrived at my doorstep shivering out of your mind because even a sane person would put a coat on.”
“I guess I’m insane for your love,” Bob smirked at her which made her face go as red as the tulip.
“Is it too late to kick you out, Floyd?” She asked, looking away from him so she didn’t have to see his stupid shit-eating grin. “Because I can and will if you make another smirk like that,” She muttered, biting her lower lip as she looked away.
“It’s too late, I know where you live now,” He was laughing, “I can just show up at any time with flowers in hand and we can go on picnics and-”
She put her hand over his mouth, “Slow down, we aren’t even dating, Floyd.” She was extremely flustered from all his suggestions, he was just staring at her taking in how deep red her face was just from his lonesome teasing. He was going to take it as no one had ever made her that flustered before.
Once she moved her hand away, “Just finish your hot chocolate, I can drive you home later.” She ran her hands through her hair with a fresh sigh. “Especially since you almost died out there.”
She turned a heel with a sigh, her eyes always trailing back to Bob, he was still holding the tulip but he was staring at her still, he wasn’t like Y/N where she would admire the flower before thanking him… he was just Bob and decided to walk over to her and hold the flower out to her.
“You should keep it,” He whispered, his tone sending shivers down her already freezing spine.
“But, I gave it to you, Floyd.” Her hand flinched forward to fold his hand around the stem of the flower, “It’s yours to keep you can’t try and be a flower shop owner in my own house, I simply won’t allow it.”
Y/N shook her head, refusing the same Tulip she gave him, for once she said no to a flower, because she wanted him to keep what she said close to him. He was right about flowers having meanings, meanings that could rub someone just enough that it was something that they could possibly cherish.
“Just finish your drink.”
“Okay. If you say so, Y/N.”

"Sarah Maclean tends to take real historical events and societal mores and twist them to modern mores and ethics and I love that. I see a lot of complaints about it, mostly I sometimes think, because people haven’t stopped to study the history behind the eras they read. I find her settings immediately recognizable. I tend to worry more when people complain about historical accuracy because it’s outside the norm of what they typically see in historical romance. The marry young/lady’s a virgin/women don’t work outside the home/boy there were huge age gaps everywhere got a lot of story time and press because they were values society wanted to promulgate, but were really only practiced or able to be practiced by a very, very narrow margin of people; typically white and middle class. The lower classes and people of color didn’t have the luxury, the artists, philosophers, criminals, and world changers didn’t want to, and the upper classes didn’t have to. The immigrants, Catholics, Jews, people of color, and people of color who are now considered white weren’t allowed to. But most readers reject those other histories because they haven’t delved deeply enough into real history to know all of that other history even exists."
