Every European kid asking why it's called “Palms Sunday” If we bless everything except real palms:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Palm Sunday is a Christian holiday. As you might have guessed from the name, it’s on a Sunday — always the Sunday before Easter. That’s because it’s meant to commemorate Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem, a week before Easter Sunday.
However, plams doesn't grow up everywhere, so each Christian country adopted their own version.
In the memes I summarize some of the European traditions I know:
North Italy, Slovenia and Croatia: small olive branches are blessed and distributed to the faithfuls at Churches. In Slovenia there are also “butarica”, that is traditionally a bundle of greenery, flowers or colored wood shavings. In Ljubljana, they are made of colored wood shavings, similar to the Polish tradion illustrated below
South Italy: interweaving palm leaves
Germany, Austria, Finland and Hungary: pussy willow or catkin branches
Bulgaria: Willow twigs, something weaved into crowns with other flowers
Poland: the faithful bring to churches their own “palms” generally made from willow branches decorated with evergreen plants colorful and vibrant crepe paper flowers and green bilberry or juniper bushes affixed to the top of dried flowers and colorful dyed grasses.

Festa de l’Ós i l’Ossa del Alt Vallespir i Andorra | European Traditions
“On Cadlemas the Bear leaves the den, and if he finds the weather fine he goes back to sleep one more time”
Once the most powerful mammal of continental Europe, the Bear was feared and adores since the Neolithic. In the mountains of the Catalonian Pyrenees and Andorra many bears once roamed. Feared and revered many traditions displayed the awaken of the bear at the start of February around Candlemas. Now five village keep this traditions during a cold winter day someone plays the Bear who kills, kidnaps womena and must be captured: natures awakes, society mocked and Spring is closer than ever.
These celebration has various origins, it can be related to the legend of Joan de l’Os, a hero born of a human woman and a bear, especially in the Vallespir where the Bear comes from the forest, the river or the mountain to chase the women in the village and is killed by hunter. In Andorra the she-Bear hunting is a excuse to do a commentary on the society having song and gags about modern social and political events in the traditional spirit of Carnival.
The celebrations are a very important part of the identities for the villages and help preserve song, poems and just have a great time waiting for the end of winter (and in the case of the Vallespir, to keep speaking Catalan). Often considered violent or too rural in the past, in recent years their importante have been resotred. UNESCO added the celebrations to the Immaterial World Heritage last year.
The main character is the Bear, once a man in a real bear pelt costume. With time, the pelts rotted or where lost. Saint Laurent bought a new one in Canada, the rest of the villages made makeshift costumes of sheep skin. Prats decided to change the costume form but the bears is still painted black so he can “paint” village people with in “paws” in a show of respect and friendliness though being amateur rugby players and hunters the participants sometimes the tackles are real.
You can find out more about them you can find: the Unesco description of the Andorra (cat) and Vallespir (fr). Have a video about the Feast in Prats in the past: 1/2 (cat) and the modern Ball de l’Os of Encamp (cat). These Youtube channels makes videos of different bear related celebrations. And a paper about the historiography of the Bear festivals in Vallespir (fr).

Recently there was a patch of trees felled without warning.
It's nesting season, so it's very dangerous for the birds to destroy their trees. I've already seen woodpigeons mating in the nearby area about a month ago. I've seen birds such as woodpigeons, magpies, great tits, blue tits and a sparrowhawk in the area that's been felled (as well as robins, long-tailed tits, coal tits, blackbirds, goldfinches and house sparrows nearby). I have also heard a Jay nearby before, and one Facebook commenter has said there are nesting Jays. Additionally, it looks horrible - there used to be beautiful trees, and now there's just a thin strip of trees along the footpath, as well as a horrid big hole next to the car park. Our green spaces need more protection.
According to two councillor's Facebook posts, the Forestry Commission are investigating due to no felling licence or planning permission. They have served a Stop Notice. The matter has been raised with the wildlife crime team due to disturbance to nesting birds. The area has been allocated for development, but the felling has had insufficient regard for the environmental impact.
Developers will often illegally fell trees, then take the fine and build houses since it's already been destroyed. However, they could now be issued a restocking order, and would have to replant the trees.
I've seen two messages on the gate to the site protesting this, so I made this piece. If there's public uproar it could hopefully make them think twice next time, even if it doesn't save this one.

For the past few centuries, immigrants have brought with them their knowledge of European folk art painting to decorate furniture, walls, and accessories for various types. This particular type of decoration, called rosemaling, evolved in Scandinavia during the early part of the eighteenth century and is, perhaps, the most exuberant of all forms of folk art.

Today's a very important day, it's World Eel Day!!
European Eels have a fascinating life cycle, starting out in the sea as little leaf-shaped larvae, riding currents into Europe as they grow, and then finally returning to the sea as full-grown eels! You can learn more about these slippery fish and their conservation efforts at EelSuitcase !
(Psssttt, I'm selling prints of this here, the original A3 gouache painting will be going up for sale on my website soon)

I recently illustrated a memo game "Endangered Animal Babies" for Treecer. This memo game contains 72 unique illustrations and 36 endangered animal species. Each pair consists of the parent and the baby animal and all the illustrations were done in watercolor.
I'm really grateful for this opportunity and very happy with the outcome of the game! The game is sold by WWF Finland and Treecer at the moment.

One of my favourite frogs, the European common toad! While they are endangered in the UK, thankfully they are abundant over the rest of Europe.
