Alright, y’all, you already know what I’m about to say. But go ahead get some water, something to eat, take your meds, and whatever else you need to do as I go into this. Ready? Good.

I’ve seen far too many users on AO3 being rude and saying things that I’m not even sure they understand is rude.

If you’ve done these things, don’t sweat it too much. As long as you learn and do better, that’s what’s important. I don’t wanna make anyone feel bad, but I want to make y’all AWARE.

So let’s talk about some basic etiquette for interacting on AO3.

(Disclaimer: not every AO3 author is going to agree. Some are okay with some of these things, some aren’t. Let’s just play on the safe side yeah?)

Comment Etiquette

Listen, we’ve all left comments on fics we like. But here’s the thing, some of us don’t realize what comments are rude or not.

Comments that pass the vibe check:

Hearts

Something you liked about the story

Saying you enjoyed the story

Excited to see more from an author (not demanding an update, not asking for more, just genuine excitement for whatever the author has in store)

Anything that is genuinely nice

Theories on what you think will happen (not necessarily what you want or hope happens)

Comments that do not pass the vibe check:

DEMANDING an update

Treating fic authors like content pumps and not real people who do this in their free time

Critiquing the story

Saying how they should’ve written something different

Constructive criticism that the author did NOT ask for

Saying things that are purposefully antagonistic

Trolling

Anything that if someone said to you about something you worked hard on you would think was rude

Dogging on how a character was written

Comments that are WILDLY different from the tone of the story (i.e leaving a graphically violent comment on a story that does not feature graphic violence)

Any mention on how long it’s been since they’ve updated — you’re gonna make your wait longer

This one is more of a personal ick but any “want to see” comments, specifically on one-shots (I want you to enjoy what I’ve written, not talk about stories you hope I’ll write — unless author says that they specifically want those comments)

Honestly there’s so many comments that do not pass the vibe check I can’t even list them all. But I listed a BUNCH so, general rule of thumb is: If you’re not sure it’s rude, reach out to a friend and ask. Also, you can ask for people in the comment section to vibe check you if you’re unsure. And? If you know it’s rude and say it anyway, you’re an asshole.

ALSO: author’s will read your comments! They may not respond, but 9/10 author’s will read the comment so remember that you’re not posting into the void. And? People will call you out if you’re being rude. Don’t double down. Apologize, delete comment, move on.

Author’s talk, we will block you if you’re a raging asshole cuz we don’t need that kinda energy in our fics. And, sometimes we’ll turn off anon commenters cuz if you’re going to continue to be an asshole, and can’t even say it to our face, you din’t deserve to comment.

Bookmark Etiquette

This one is prolly gonna get a lot of people riled up and I simply don’t care. If you disagree, that’s fine, just know as an author and friends with other AO3 author’s we consider these sorts of things rude.

Bookmarks that pass the vibe check:

No comment

A nice comment with the bookmark

Private bookmarks (no matter what it’s tagged/commented with)

Nice/neutral tags

A note to self about where you left off

Bookmarks that do not pass the vibe check:

Anything rude for the comment/tag section of a bookmark — unsure what’s rude? See comment section above

Ranking the fic (see this way more often in bookmarks than anywhere else)

Unread bookmarks (not always a fail, it’s just weird? You can mark for later, why are you bookmarking my story without reading it?)

If your bookmark is private? It doesn’t matter how you tag/note it/whatever. But if it’s public? Author’s will sometimes go look at bookmarks because people will leave nice little comments that make us feel good. If you say something mean we can’t even delete it. But I can guarantee we’ll block you!

Yes, bookmarks are for the reader, but just because you didn’t intend for an author to see what you said doesn’t make it any less mean. If it’s public: shame on you. Make a bookmark that’s mean in private, then I won’t care.

Conclusion

Don’t be mean. If you don’t like a story, you don’t have to say anything. It takes more time to leave a nasty comment or bookmark something in a mean way than it does to just back out of the fic. I get it, you don’t like the fic. I don’t like every fic I read. You know what we do? We use the back button.

We’re all people, we all have lives and things going on. Just know 2024 is the year I’m no longer replying to nasty comments. I’m deleting them, blocking if I want to, and moving on.

My headcanon for Modern!Machete before he encounters (re-encounters?) Vasco is that he works in some high-powered but low-profile position for an influential and well-known multinational. Like a corporate lawyer or accountant for Apple or Volkswagon or Shell. He's very, very good at his job, his assistants and staff think he's a good boss, his boss thinks he's great, but half his colleagues can't stand him because they think he got promoted for sucking up to their boss instead of for his skills (it was for his skills). He's got exactly enough interpersonal skills to recognize the problem and not enough to fix it. He gets paid extremely well, well enough to mostly pretend that he's happy and fulfilled (he still ends up happier in the Modern!AU because his job only sucks a little instead of literally destroying him. Also because modern medicine means his medical situation is much better understood and controlled). Yes this is all just the modern equivalent to what canon!Machete's got going on but it's startling how much carries over with no changes.

Oh that's so well thought out actually, I love that.

on one hand I wanna write my fic ideas wherein my marvel oc gets sent to the alternate universe of Gotham and hijinks ensue whilst she tries to survive and get back and the batfam and such slowly learn more info abt her world and how it's being threatened atm and she needs to go back and help and whatnot.

But on the other hand, the readers wouldn't know the marvel related backstory of this OC and would have. No context for her going in

But ALSO then the readers would know abt as much abt this mysterious figure as the batcrew do, and get to learn via flash backs and her slowly revealing info to them as safety allows

Then there's also just a general. Idk if there's any sort of oc etiquette when it comes to writing oc centered fics? My brain goes so hogwild when I read anything that I usually avoid oc fics other people write just bc I usually read and enjoy fics at face value but I also go "now what would happen if this OC was here?" And that gets real complicated when other people's ocs are involved

tip for everyone: its generally considered "rude" and "rather weird" when you see a hc and start making it a big deal about how much you disagree and how you think people need to stop making that hc esp if you start throwing around buzzwords abt it. proper fandom etiquette would be to either leave it alone or to just like.. word your disagreement differently. if you dont see tubbo as ems dad but rather her uncle or godfather or even just generally Family (or hell even as just a babysitter) you can just share your headcanon without prefacing it with "i dont like/agree with x hc heres mine instead". and that would be much more respectful and generally nicer

I wonder what ani and padmé would have been like as parents to Luke and Leia, and later grandparents to Ben. Like I don't have any great developed thoughts on that whole au concept I just do love the thought. Ben has so much impressive family, and a lot of uncles and aunts to look up to. If a lot of things had gone a lot differently, idk how, and padmé and ani got to grow older and stronger together, if Ben were to have his grandfather not only as a legend but as a person to hold him and tell him stories, I wonder what that would have been like.

I'm still baffled at how someone could be so pissed off over stuff that they end up harassing an artist off the internet. Like don't you have anything better to do like school???? Homework??? Trying to get into college or getting a job??? Or is your mommy and daddy letting you become a neet too? Cause hey I can understand it, I'm one as well, but at least I know better to not harass someone and just block if I don't like their content.

Which is what I did with these people before this whole mess even happened, I didn't like their content so I blocked/muted them on both twitter and tumblr. I'm not gonna have a childish tantrum over content I don't like, like some children I know. What baffles me more is that one of them is a year younger than me, how can you be an adult and not have the maturity of one? You certainly were spoiled, the vibes are all there.

I'm not gonna dogpile on the actual child in question, but I hope they realize they can't do this shit in the real world and learn to mature. But for the adult I hope they actually see what harm they did and have the guilt follow them for years, because they need to stop acting like a child and grow the fuck up.

Message to Fan Artists

Feel free to PM me if you think I got something wrong. I might be having one big miscommunication, but there's a lot bothering me about Tumblr/Twitter culture lately. To start, it's suddenly a huge deal that I'm posting other people's art from Pixiv/Twitter, even though blogs have been doing it since Tumblr started, and I reblog from several other blogs devoted exclusively to reposting. Some of it is retaliation for me complaining about furries/fetishes. Anyway....

-So you've decided to make fan art, and not just any fan art, but fan art of characters from a huge, worldwide fandom, such as pokemon. Chances are you genuinely love the characters you are drawing, but it's also true you are banking your future notoriety as an artist on characters that do not belong to you. It's possible you wouldn't get a fraction of the attention drawing other than. Lo and behold! Things are happening because of this, and some of it is stuff you don't like. The kiddoes are under the impression that these characters belong to everybody, and they want to spread your work far and wide.

-Not much you can do about it except create a really good watermark. People like me only want to post art with credit on a collection blog. Other shady characters might want to steal your work and make t-shirts or post on Pinterest without credit. The owners of the copyrights for popular characters don't gaf because it's all free advertising for their brand.

-But fan artists also have a brand, especially if they are taking commissions and have that $ tip on their posts. That's why it's ridiculous all these people on Tumblr/Twitter believe they can list a slew of criteria people have to follow to enjoy their work. This the internet, where terrorists are posting beheadings, and weirdos are posting their homemade smut videos. It's a free-for-all, and nobody owes anybody anything. A fan artist only has the right to be quietly adored and have their egos stroked from afar if others choose to give them that right. -But too many hide behind their supposed autism-spectrum to excuse their social laziness at best or antisocial snobbery at worst. They're all like, "You're not allowed to comment on my posts, reblog my posts with commentary, or interact with me if you are a TERF, pro-shipper, Trump supporter, etc."

Side note: I suspect a lot of people who are socially lazy due to autistic spectrum are middle to upper middle class white women who have enabler relatives who'd coddle them. I'll bet there's no autism spectrum in Mumbai, India. Want to know why? Well, because anybody who has been packed into public transit like a sardine in Mumbai has had the experience of a skeevy complete stranger jamming a finger up to their knuckle into their butthole. Once that happens to a person.....IT CHANGES YOU, MAN!!1! -Not that I've ever experienced that *darts eyes* but I'm able to put life into the proper perspective and not get uptight over a fucking quote tweet.

Moving on....

-So as I said, fan artists charging for their work have to sell their brand to make money. It doesn't matter if you are a die-hard Bernie Sanders fan who loathes capitalism, the laws of it still apply to you, and that means you have to work on your public image. You are a hotdog vendor selling hotdogs, and you aren't going to move as many if you alienate whole groups of people, such as pro-shippers or people who reblog your posts with comments. If you are popular, you might have to resign yourself to getting asks from weirdos and act gracious about it if people ask you the same questions over and over. IE: An artist drawing gardevoir will get asked the 'is her dress skin?' question ad nauseam. It might seem stale to you, but new people discover gardevoir every day, and it's fresh for them.

If you are a not-so good artist who isn't charging for work but does creepy fetishes for attention, what is this nonsense where people aren't allowed to criticize you? Maybe people don't want to see their favorite characters represented that way and will speak up. IE: Subway Boss Emmet, like everybody knows that one autistic guy who is a serial killer who fucks sheep and has his brother locked in his basement with his leg cut off. There's one in every town, right?

It's not just autism spectrum though, many fan artists excuse their bad behavior hiding behind gay/trans sjw bullshit identity. They'll screech 'oppression' if you give them a hard time. That doesn't always work. Look at Lily Orchard who is a popular transfemale YouTube personality who treated too many of her fans like garbage. A bunch of people shrugged off decades of gay crusader, trans-jihad brainwashing and said, "By golly...I'M GOING TO DARE CRITICISE HER!!" -Next thing you know, there are gossip blogs dedicated to discussing her MLP pedo comic or pointing out possible domestic abuse and/or gaslighting.

Don't ever pull the 'gay gay autism gay' oppression bullshit on me because I'll just say, "I am Kharmii, and I am above rules". A lot of people will block me for it, but enough will not. I've noticed that the really popular artists generally know the game and don't take sides in the pro/anti shipping wars. Aspiring artists should follow their example.

i've had a lovely week. the danish housemate who lives in the room next to mine has been away since last friday. i haven't had to hear him smacking his keyboard so hard the walls shake, or hear his restless shuffling and stomping in his gamer chair, or hear him yell and grunt and fake cry and cough and moan and plead for mercy from his daily 6+ hour GTA V roleplay sessions, in which he apparently plays as an old sickly man who always speaks in a very high voice to the point his voice is barely cracking and whose store gets violently robbed on a daily basis, for over a week. it's been idyllic. i have been in a good mood every day knowing i wouldn't have to try to block out the noise after 4pm.

unfortunately he came home today. and is right back on his roleplaying. it's already been 6 hours of it today. he might still go on for another 3.

#caw at ye #yes i have talked to him about it. specifically mentioning shutting the fuck up after 11pm as is common etiquette #he's a Gamer so both his short term and long term memory have eroded away years ago. knocking on the walls shuts him up for 2 minutes tops #and he's danish #so unfortunately there isn't much hope for him </3 #it's wild to me. i never see the guy. i don't know his name. or his age. or if he's a student or working #he comes home anywhere between 3:30 and 4pm and after 2 minutes without fail he's on his computer in a voice chat and smacking his keyboard
