📚The Source of Self-Regard by Toni Morrison🌟 How do I capture Morrison’s essence? This space, these words, this alphabet isn’t enough. Gilt-edged letters, written over reams of crushed petals, trimmed with Chantilly lace, sparkling with wit and wisdom commensurate to Morrison’s art- that may just attempt to do justice to her writings. But we have that not and so we make do with this. A collection of her essays, speeches and interviews, this book offers a peek into the mind of this ex-editor of Random House who’d wake up at 4 am to write her first book. While every essay from Morrison’s pen is worth its weight in gold, ‘The Source of Self Regard’, ‘Faulkner & Women’, ‘The Writer Before The Page’ & ‘Cinderlla’s Stepsisters’ turned out to be my favourites. Will you allow me to share a couple of my favourite bits? “Finally she speaks and her voice is soft and stern. “I don't know", she says. “I don't know whether the bird you are holding is dead or alive, but what I do now is that it is in your hands. It is in your hands.” There is authority in her prose- the kind that expects better of itself and of you. She isn’t patronising, nor condescending- instead she shares her thoughts, offers them up for rumination, often being the hand that leads you up a better path of thinking. I found her political writings a bit dense for my taste. I am culpable there. Was I too eager to devour her work or was it that each sentence led me to think hard and thus provided a challenge that I could not rise up to? I’ll revisit that section and know for sure. Morrison’s ‘The Nobel Lecture in Literature’ was an ABSOLUTE treat. If the whole collection isn’t possible right now, read that today. Read it today, yes I insist. I leave you with my favourite Morrison quote- “We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.” Till next time… #tonimorrison #thesourceofselfregard #beloved #nonfictionbooks #essaycollection #blackliterature (at Delhi, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc6_TMHLDiv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

if you’ve spoken to me in the 2 weeks since I started reading No One Asked For This by @cazziedavid, I’m sorry. I’ve probably mentioned it way too many times. alas, I just love this collection of essays, and Cazzie’s flavor of anxiety is the same as mine which inevitably leads to a love the book for me. These essays were a true darkly hilarious, cathartic joy to read and felt like a dispatch from a big sister figure in a way that was comforting. Your 20s are so weird and confusing, and this book was a total comfort. full review is live on the blog now!! link in bio: http://www.readingwritingandme.com/2022/11/no-one-asked-for-this-by-cazzie-david.html #cazziedavid #nooneaskedforthis #bookstagram #bookworm #ebook #librarybook #bookblogger #bookreview #essaycollection https://www.instagram.com/p/ClJop4ZJAqF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Kardashians - Breaking the Fourth Wall - Prologue: The Author's Note (on Wattpad)
The Kardashian's on Hulu is a masterclass in brand strategy and somebody needs to talk about it. To anyone who watched the original series Keeping Up with The Kardashians in it's entirety, the parallels with the old series are clear. From established character "quirks" to reclaiming old narratives this new series is pure, empirical genius - bible.
Follow along as I breakdown & review The Kardashians on Hulu as each new episode airs.

I’m so excited to announce that I am launching my essay collection “This Body of Mine” on @medium. This collection of personal essays explores how my experience of my body has shaped my identity and my spiritual, emotional growth. The first essay is up today, so head to medium.com/@thisbodyofmine to read it. I’ll be publishing a new essay every Monday until the entire collection is published. I’m launching this project as part of Medium’s partner program, which means that you’ll only be able to read a certain number of essays for free each month. I encourage you to become a medium subscriber, not just to support me, but to support millions of other writers getting their work out there on this platform. I can’t wait to share this entire collection with the world. It’s been a long time coming. #writer #writing #writingcommunity #essay #essaycollection #bodypositivity #bodypositive #fatliberation #fatactivism #bodyliberation #fatpositive #eatingdisorderrecovery #addiction #addictionrecovery #chronicpain #chronicillness #spoonie #spoonielife https://www.instagram.com/p/CBd53MKHZdL/?igshid=1ncn6v1wea2be

May 26th, 2020 || 📚mini-reviews from asian readathon reads📚 . 🌿The Magical Language of Others by E.J. Koh. Koh’s parents left for South Korea to work when she was 15. She and her brother stayed in the United States. Using her mother’s letters as an unifying thread, Koh explores how abandoned she felt and the difficulties she faced all alone and the consequences the move had on her and her family. Dealing with mental health issues, racism and identity, The Magical Language of Others is written in a beautiful, lyrical manner. I highly recommend it. . 🌿Minor Feelings: An Asian American Reckoning by Cathy Park Hong. An essay collection blending many genres all at once. Every single essay was brutal and I love how they felt like a memoir since she links the issues she explores (mental health issues, racism, East-West history, colonialism and art/literature among others) to her own experiences. . Both of these are ones i’ll love to reread and have ordered the physical copies 🥳 . 🌿On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. Unfortunately I have mixed feeling about this. The writing I found beautiful although pretentious at times and despite being gripped by this letter a son writes to her mother at the beginning, the author started to lose me halfway through and by the time I hit the third section he had lost me completely, to the point where I wasn't sure of the "purpose" of the novel or even what he was trying to do. So it's a weird feeling; why? Because I'm glad I read it, but at the same time, the last section left a bitter taste in my mouth and "contaminated" my initial opinion of the story. The issues discussed are important and poignant; however, it lacked something. Or maybe I'm not the right audience for this type of novel. Whatever the case, it doesn't really change the outcome. • • • #asianreadathon #mayreads #minorfeelings #themagicallanguageofothers #onearthwerebrieflygorgeous #nonfiction #essaycollection #memoir #literaryfiction #unitedbookstagram #bookreviewers #recentreads #bookloversunite https://www.instagram.com/p/CApov1QqZqO/?igshid=16sxae8k74ciu

Thank you to @randomhouse for sending me this exhilarating new book which I know will be my number one non-fiction book of 2019. Seriously, you all need to read this book! TRICK MIRROR by Jia Tolentino is a book of essays about pop culture and everything current. These essays present modern life as a con — a funhouse mirror that distorts and hides the truth, says Esquire. Just think how we are all “in on the secrets” of reality tv and social media, yet look at what it’s doing to our psyche by influencing our thoughts and behavior. Tolentino discusses topics such as the scamming culture, yoga culture, Fyre Festival, 2008 financial crisis, current government situations, student debt, female empowerment and more. I was so impressed by the intellect, honesty and wit of this young writer from The New Yorker. Think Joan Didion of the 2000s! Even the talented Zadie Smith gave praise to this book; “It's easy to write about things as you wish they were—or as others tell you they must be. It's much harder to think for yourself, with the minimum of self-delusion. It's even harder to achieve at a moment like this, when our thoughts are subject to unprecedented manipulation, monetization, and surveillance. Yet Tolentino has managed to tell many inconvenient truths in  Trick Mirror—and in enviable style. This is a whip-smart, challenging book that will prompt many of us to take a long, hard look in the mirror. It filled me with hope.” If you’ve read it let me know what you thought of it and if you haven’t but hope to, please report back with your thoughts. . . . . . . #trickmirror #jiatolentino #reflectionsonselfdelusion #politicsandprose #essaycollection #bookstyle #fromwhereisit #womenwriters #summerreadinglist https://www.instagram.com/p/B1g_AiInVrR/?igshid=1m9604waq02h

💭Still hanging onto the coattails of 2022, I am reluctant to say goodbye. After Covid, January feels too early to celebrate. March, people, March- that seems safe to decide the flavour of 2023.  George Orwell’s collection of Essays was an experience similar to reading Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley (If you haven’t read it, I recommend it)- the writing is taut, no frivolity of either words or ideas. The breadth of the collection isn’t limited to literature- it is decidedly political. His views about the Spanish Civil War, the politics of the English language take care of that. For someone who gravitates more towards the personal experience of living, Orwell’s memories of public school horrors (Such, Such Were The Joys), his account of ‘Shooting An Elephant’ as a police officer in Burma, and a not-so-brief discussion on Charles Dickens are uncompromising and entertaining. I favoured ‘Books Vs. Cigarettes’ & ‘Why I Write’ the most- two delightful compositions. The first is his proof through which he justifiably demonstrates that owning books isn’t an expensive hobby- the price of books is far less than the value one gets from them. ‘Why I Write’- well, why does anyone write? It’s a quirk of nature- like being right-handed or having a painful wart. But returning to Orwell: he takes us on his writing journey in a few words- “I wanted to write enormous naturalistic novels with unhappy endings, full of detailed descriptions and arresting similes, and also full of purple passages in which words were used partly for the sake of their sound.” Listen, just read that essay- it's insightful and honest, and if I were to talk about it more, I’d end up letting all the cats out. If you liked this, read: •Giving Up The Ghost •The Source of Self Regard-equally political and entertaining •What I Talk About When I Talk About Running •Slouching Towards Bethlehem •The View From The Cheap Seats #georgeorwell #nonfictionreads #shootinganelephant #nonfictionbookclub #nonfictionreads #essaycollection #delhireader #delhibookstagrammer (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnOUy1IL_FE/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
