“Alan Turing ended his own life on June 7, 1954. He bit into an apple laced with cyanide and ate a bite of it. He did it because the British government chemically castrated him, humiliated him, and prosecuted him for being gay. For that reason there is a bitten apple in the Apple logo... In honor of Alan Turing. He invented computer science and using his early designs cracked the Enigma code - the encrypted machine that the Nazis and the German Army used to communicate secret commands to each other during world war - thereby saving millions of human lives and bringing us to the modern computer age. Pride month isn't just about dancing on floats in gold shorts and waving a rainbow flag. It is about remembering that everyone has the right to be happy, to love who they want to love and to recognize the outstanding contribution that everyone can make in a society free of fear or prejudice.”

The Penultimate set from the Book of Lapis shows another project from that year. I had started to visit sites of LGBTQ historical importance such as the Harvey Milk memorial in San Francisco, the Stonewall bar in New York and the Homomonument in Amsterdam. This time I had decided to visit the Alan Turing statue in Manchester to make 7 bowls of offering to the saint. The line from the Buddhist puja “I make offerings at all the holy places and places in which the a Bodhisattvas have been” inspired this set of work. Usually my travelling companion had photographed the prostrations for me but this time my patient friend and fellow Foundation tutor Damian had agreed to come with me do the recording, (which added much to this pilgrimage because I didn’t usually have a fellow artist to notice other details worthy of documentation while I was doing the performance). The first plate is the embossed copper and slate ex voto I made to honour Turing, (shortly after exhibited with #notjustcollective ) Alan Turing was of course a gay man who helped end WWII much earlier and thereby saved hundreds of thousands of lives. In gratitude for this remarkable contribution the government arrested him for his homosexuality, chemically castrated him and caused him to commit suicide. There would be no computers as we know them today without his genius and countless people alive today would have never been born. The hand gesture is a mudra meaning “do not be afraid” the apple he had bitten was laced with cyanide. The second plate I removed my shoes to walk on holy ground to his shrine, on arriving I made appropriate prostrations to him, sat at his feet to request blessings. I offered 7 bowls of water to represent the 7 traditional offerings to a Bodhisattva, and used the holy water to clean the rainbow mosaic at his feet. Number 15 on my Queer Icons Pride Project is mathematician Alan Turing Alan Turning was not only a mathematician, philosopher, theoretical biologist, but a computer scientist as well. Turing was influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which is considered a model for the general purpose computer. He is considered the father of not only theoretical computer science, but also artificial intelligence. Turing was born in London in 1912. He graduated Kings College Cambridge, with a degree in mathematics. In 1938 he recieved a PhD from the Department of Mathematics at Princeton. During WW2 he worked for the Government Code and Cypher School. He devised a way of breaking German ciphers and helped crack the German Enigma Code. After the war Turing created one of the first designs for a stored program computer. Despite his many accomplishments, Turing was never fully recognised in Britain during his lifetime because much of his work was covered by the Official Secrets Act. Alan Turing inspires me because of his intelligence and creativity. Despite not being viewed as an equal, where it was a crime for him being homosexual, he still chose to help save the lives of others. It's also pretty amazing to know that the preliminary computer design came from him. The Treasury note, which is the last British banknote to make the transition from paper to polymer, will enter circulation on 23 June this year, on what would have been the mathematician's birthday. . El próximo 23 de junio, el "Bank of England" pondrá en circulación el nuevo billete de 50 libras. Ese día es el natalicio de la figura que se homenajea en el billete: Alan Turing. Turing proporcionó los fundamentos teóricos de la computación moderna. Aunque es más conocido por su trabajo en el diseño de máquinas para descifrar códigos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desempeñó un papel fundamental en el desarrollo de las primeras computadoras, primero en el Laboratorio Nacional de Física y luego en la Universidad de Manchester.
