AOT characters and their social media presence
Note; this is my first time writing headcanons and i dont know if this has been done before, but yeah either way hope you like them :)
CW: Mention of smut
l
Eren S1-3
Eren’s most used app would definitely be youtube
His niche would be Let’s Play videos
He would also probably be a big fan of Mr Beast
Eren S4
S4 Eren would have zero social media presence, or even a smartphone for that matter
Even if he had a phone it would be a nokia brick phone just so he could keep contact with Mikasa and Armin to let them know he’s alive
Mikasa
Mikasa would have an instagram account with no posts or even a profile picture
She’d use it to follow fitness influencers like leanbeefpatty, and get tips from them (but we all know she’s stronger than any of them)
She would also have fitness tracking apps installed to keep track of her progress
Armin
Armin’s most used app would be goodreads. I am not taking criticism on this
Considering the soft boy that he is, he would also definitely use pinterest a lot
His entire pinterest feed would just be pretty landscapes, especially shores and sunsets
Jean
Jean would have a Tiktok account SOLELY so he could post thirst traps
Sasha
Sasha would be a vlogger, but a nice one like Emma Chamberlain
She’d be pretty famous too at that
Her niche would be food reviews and cooking with Niccolo
People would make compilations of her and Niccolo with titles like ‘13 minutes of two dorks being in love’
Connie
Connie would be a reddit user
He’d be scarily well versed in internet language and all types of memes, even the most obscure ones
He’d also watch those weird iceberg videos and look up creepypastas knowing full well he’d get freaked out by them
Levi
Levi wouldn’t have social media
He would however be subscribed to multiple newsletters to keep him up to date with current events
He’d also be the kind of person to check his email first thing in the morning
Hange
Hange would spend a lot of time on youtube binging chemistry video experiments
They would also have a Tumblr account; it would be their not-so-guilty pleasure reading smut just because they’re so fascinated by it
Reiner
Reiner would have a twitter account with 4 followers but not to argue with people
He’d simply tweet every 20 minutes after every single minor inconvenience he comes across
He’d treat it as his personal diary

The indistinguishable realm of life - social media has become a medium where life occurs.
If our lives are hyper-extended into social media, has that become another medium for where life exists? Life online and offline has become nearly indistinguishable as social media is a medium where we flex and show our everyday lives. It is also a medium for the real and unreal.
Social media is a mix of ourselves through performance and representation through our identities shown to the internet’s public domain.
We place ourselves in a theatre of streamlining our narratives – where it can be all shows don’t tell. Consequently, users have created a theatre in social media that blurs out the distinguishable lines between real life and an act of posing to flex or tell a specific narrative. Our everyday life has become a mode of self-commodification for internet affection. The birth of Kardashian Kolloquium by MJ Corey pins points out how every day has been commodified into some form of capital through her Instagram page that does media theory analyse of the Kardashians and their reality TV show. The Kardashians are the embodiment of self-commodification and taste-making their everyday life for mass consumption. From reality TV shows to social media, the norm is publicised and directed through causal Instagram, where marketers have capitalised on our displays of the mundane as a space for product placement. Think Emma Chamberlain and her “photo dumps” which have cascaded us into posting mundane “fit pics” and accidental photos on the Gram. Per the Digital Fairy, causal Instagram has shifted the marketing standards to products that fit effortlessly into our lives through social media. Social media “recontextualises what already exists” to be re-commodified into our lives in a different way (Jack Self).
With social media’s power to commodify our experiences, we are convinced to buy products not because we need them - but because we are marketed like we have to have them. Per Julie Megretu & Henri Lefebvre, we no longer consume what we need because traditional institutions have become out of sight and lost their relevancy in the age of social media where AI and algorithms convince us of what we should want but not need; along with the dilution of traditional institution’s powers on directing us on what we should do - we now have social media to do that as it is a main source of trafficking and controlling how our and other people’s data can be commodified into a purchase. It is unsettling that our feeds are dictated by algorithms and feeds - there is this loss of self-agency and autonomy over what information is fed to us.
In defence of social media, it is only a facet of a highly curated look of the self that does not represent our realities. It can often seem to represent other's whole realities as we are so fixated on curating our image online, no matter if we are active or inactive. It seems connectivity inherently causes conflict within ourselves, but it is how we use the technology, not how it uses us.
The metaverse offers the narrative that life can happen online. It is enticing how we can build new worlds and new identities within the virtual space; the metaverse can fulfil an extension of who we are and our desires, per Herman Narula (CEO of Improbable a company building metaverse infrastructure and software).  Could “virtual reality becomes the next collective dream destination?” per Shumon Basar? Or will life online be distinguishable between two realms? The metaverse seems like a pipedream for now. But as of now, social media is our daily lives - it has become indistinguishable from the present and online.
I miss my pre-internet brain - but for Gen Z’s and onwards, we were born into a reality where the internet is omnipresent in our realities, and we don’t have a pre-internet brain.

Social media & influencers: saving or ruining the slow fashion movement?
This weeks topic dives in deeper to the world of digital citizenship, and its correspondence to the 'slow fashion' movement. As we can recall from last week, a digital citizen is 'a person with the skills and knowledge to effectively use digital technologies in a positive way' (eSafety commisioner, NSW Department of education) which in the light of the fashion industry and social media, interrelates with it’s ability to promote and influence its content to users globally.
So what is the slow fashion movement? It’s a movement that advocates for environmental and social justice in the fashion industry (Vito, 2022) usually through the production of high quality garments, usually in a lower quantity and slower manner. Slow fashion is also categorised with terms such as 'sustainable fashion' and 'thrifting' in which garments are sustainably purchased and made using recycled materials.
Tumblr media
To many, it seems as though the slow fashion movement is a new concept heavily promoted through younger generations such as my own (Gen Z) on social media, but in fact, slow fashion can be linked back to counter culture in the 60s, anti-fur campaigns/protests in the 90s and protests against unethical working conditions in the 90s and early 2000s (Lai et al, 2017). The overall environmental impact of fast fashion [garments mass produced at a fast rate, of low quality, to meet consumer demands for new styles at the height of their popularity (Rauturier, 2022)] is what in recent years has driven a social media explosion of awareness and campaigning in an effort to reduce negative environmental impacts. Globally, the fashion industry contributes 10% of the worlds carbon emissions, exceeding the carbon footprint of international flights and maritime shipping combined (MDA20009 Digital Communities Week Five, 2023), with unwanted clothing accounting for 8.2 million tons of landfill, which in the grand scheme of things, is absolutely ridiculous and can be easily resolved and managed.
This is precisely where the topic of social media influencers comes in. As majority of us are aware, influences are absolutely notorious for the promotion of fast fashion brands without thinking twice about it, usually due to the financial benefit they receive from said company. If any of us were to open platforms such as TikTok right now, I'm sure it would take less than 30 seconds to stumble across a video of a 'try on haul' from a fast fashion brand such as Shein, Pretty Little Thing etc. The main problem with influencers promoting fast fashion purely boils down to their own status being powerful enough to encourage their audience to purchase from the companies they work with, especially when the brands are known for being 'cheap' and large amounts of clothing can be purchased for the same price as purchasing one 'ethically made' garment from a brand that aligns with the slow fashion movement.
Tumblr media
On the flip side, social media and slow fashion influencers have also created a large impact on the way forward with sustainable fashion. Influencer turned celebrity Emma Chamberlain is one of the main drivers for the sudden and drastic popularity in sustainable fashion, through her content surrounding thrifting and turning second hand clothes into cute and trendy outfits, resonating especially with an audience similar in age to her. Together with other social media influences and campaigns, they are shining new and important light on the importance of slow fashion, and how its way forward will benefit both the environment and consumers pockets.

Emma Chamberlain Addresses $10,000 Personal DM Claim Emma Chamberlain isn't running her own private Cameo scheme. This past weekend, the 21-year-old influencer came under scrutiny after a Twitter user shared an alleged screenshot from her online store, which appeared to advertise a "Personal Thank You Note From Emma in Instagram DM." And priced at a whopping $10,000, the purported listing immediately began to make the internet rounds, with numerous people joking about buying a "used car for that price" or spending their entire month's salary on the purchase.why is emma chamberlain charging 10K for an instagram DM this is wild pic.twitter.com/vO0ghF34TK— Layla 🪬 (@itslaylas) March 18, 2023 Shortly after the listing went viral, Chamberlain's online shop was placed "under construction" without further explanation. That said, the Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain host is now "eager to set the story straight" in an exclusive statement about the situation obtained by E! News — and turns out she was just as confused as everyone else. "A few days I started seeing comments asking why I was selling a DM for $10k. I assumed this was an online scam, as I had never offered to sell a DM for any amount of money, let alone $10k," the social media personality said. "People were saying this was for sale on my merch site, so I checked the site to see if it had been hacked and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary."Perplexed by the listing, Chamberlain said she "immediately got in touch with my merch company Cozack" to investigate the listing, which the company went on to claim was leftover from an "internal test" performed in 2018."There have been false and inaccurate claims that Emma Chamberlain was offering DM's in exchange for $10k," Cozack wrote on her site, while explaining that it had been "testing a prospective reward program related to Emma's Merch without her knowledge" back in 2018. As part of this, the company said it created "an outrageous, never activated reward level that was not intended to be active or purchased" before adding that "these reward ideas were never run by Emma since they were not meant to be available for sale or reward.""What we suspect is that data was activated ... discovered by an individual who then began spreading false information to press outlets," Cozack continued. "This was never made public, and certainly was never planned to be sold or purchased. The test program was never discoverable on the main page or product listing site, which is another reason that Emma had no knowledge of this."The company added, "With the internet's tendency to create false narratives around sensationalized stories we wanted to provide you with the truth firsthand and from the source."You can read both Chamberlain and Cozack's statements here.Photo via Getty / Karwai Tang / WireImage https://www.papermag.com/emma-chamberlain-10000-dm-2659642857.html

Podcasts and Gen Z
Nearly 50% of gen z users use Spotify specifically for podcasts (Jackson). Personally, I prefer apple music, aka the app that comes pre-downloaded on your iPhone that you either use multiple times a day or it sits in the cloud. Research has found that the pandemic led to an increase in Gen Z podcast listeners. During the lockdown, podcasts became a way for individuals to stay up to date with current events and news. With the growth of tik tok, podcast clips were also spread to new audiences, take Sadie Jackson's experience as an example:
"For myself, I was much more inclined to try a podcast when I recognized the host from somewhere else (YouTube, Instagram, etc.). For example, I’d seen Emma Chamberlain’s YouTube videos before, but I got a better idea of her character and essence on her podcast. That was enough to get me to listen once but not continue listening."
In Jacksons' article, she also touches on how she prefers to listen to millennial hosts.
Gen Zers are becoming independent from their parents, developing their values and beliefs, and attempting to find one’s identity. With John and Hank Green, I was eager to get wisdom from people who had already gone through the struggles of being a young adult.
I relate to her feelings exactly. The toast's hosts feel like two older sisters talking back and forth, and maybe that's because my two real sisters are their age, but regardless it brings a sense of comfort to me when I listen to them. Jackson also makes the point of gen z wanting to hear from people who have already been through the struggles of being a young adult as well as people who have a "solidified sense of self".

Sepedahan
Sejak pandemi, gue jadi punya hobi baru. Well, nggak bisa dibilang hobi juga sih kayaknya. Gue ngelakuin itu karena terlalu lama di rumah tenyata bikin sumpek, mood stagnan, dan badan nggak seger rasanya. Apa itu? Yap, sepedahan.
Sebelum kakak gue nikah, dia sempet beli sepeda gunung bekas. Dulu doi kadang sepedahan pas weekend. Setelah pindah rumah, sepedanya nggak dibawa.
Sambil sepedahan biasanya gue ngapain? Dulu awal-awal gue suka  sepedahan sambil dengerin podcast.
Paling jauh juga cuma 5 km-an kalau dilihat pake app Strava.
Ohiya, gue bahkan punya spot favorit. Ada satu jalanan yang di salah satu sisinya pohon-pohon besar. So magical!
Tergantung mood gue gimana. Tapi seenggaknya sekali seminggu ada aja keluar rumah. Gue pun beberapa kali encounter sama ride favorit yang bikin gue happy banget!
Waktu itu pernah sepedahan pas lagi agak berangin. Rasanya sejuuuk banget.
I’m so grateful and cherish this me time <3

The Social Shift
Tumblr media
in light of the pandemic, the way we socialise has changed, in turn, as has social media, with COVID19 effects of the pandemic, leaving a lasting effect on how we choose to publish and take in content.
there is a huge shift, leading towards more meaningful content: as Emma Chamberlain stated on her podcast (Anything Goes), “it’s becoming stale, post a picture of you in Bora Bora, it’s stale”, we have seen every type of content there is, whether that be purposefully created or realistic, there is always a sense that it has been altered or made to showcase to others, rather than to publish key moments in our lives.
content has become so easy to access that anyone can create it, go viral, and thus breed a career from it. but what happens when everything has been done? it seems like everyone is “famous” nowadays, whether that be for being funny, good looking or just creating something that appeals to others, there comes a point where everyone will be creating content. even high profile celebrities are becoming stale due to the sheer amount of content we are taking in; in every town, city, and burrow there is at least one famous person, allowing their value and mystery to drastically disperse. in the future, this may lead to two options, social media dies and celebrities are no longer looked up to, or that social media will enter a new era of meaningful content, i personally, am hoping for the lesser.
so where do we go from here? moving forward we are seeing content creators, and celebrities alike, shifting into presenting more of their true selves on social media. the return of ‘casual Instagram’ has presented opportunities for its users to be authentic and lessens the pressures to present themselves, and their lives, as perfect. YouTube is seeing more realistic ‘vlogs’ and influencers showing how they too suffer with various relatable issues, such as mental health. documentaries are becoming increasingly popular with viewers wanting to see more of real life, in juxtaposition to the fake persona’s shown on social media. recently the Kardashian’s, arguably the current most known family on planet earth, moved from Hulu to Disney+ with a new era of their infamous show KUWTK (Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s), documenting more of their lives in a personal ‘vlog-style’ setting.
hopefully, this new age of social media and content allows us all to live in the moment again, not through our screens we are seemingly so attached to.

TikTok asks: "What is a scam that has been normalized?"
TikTok asks: “What is a scam that has been normalized?”
It’s been a busy week for Extremely Online. Between Beyoncé’s new singleDrake’s surprise album, Emma Chamberlain breaking her six-month YouTube hiatus, The summer when I became pretty, and the new season of The Island of Love UK, there’s a lot to tell for digital enthusiasts. However, that hasn’t stopped TikTokkers from cooking up a slew of new trends. We have users discussing scams that have…

BABE , i saw a hc ( i think it was urs) where the boys’s s/o was really fashionable, ( as somebody that’s gone viral on pinterest a little too many times ) I WAS WONDERING , what if you did a todobakudeku ( separately please omg) with somebody that’s like the emma chamberlain of fashion and they own everybody’s pinterest boards and stuff AHAHA IDK , the amount of times somebody has said ‘ wait ur that one pinterest girl right?? ‘ ANYWHAHEEIE I LOVE YOU N HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! 💗💗
pinterest famous s/o
character(s) : midoriya izuku, bakugou katsuki, todoroki shouto (bnha)
legend : [Y/N = your name] afab! reader, they/them pronouns (at the request of anon) strong quirk hinted; not specific
headcanon type : fluff, crack-ish (x reader)
note(s) : thank you anon!! so ok, i still used they/them pronouns even though the reader is afab (again at the request of anon) and whdjwkd sorry for the inactivity :,) also im gonna post more later so— sorry for the delay
»»————- ♡ ————-««
Tumblr media
midoriya izuku
when middle school midoriya finally got a phone, he downloaded pinterest for the sole purpose of looking at screencaps of heroes
but then, he hasn’t touched it a few months, because he’s been training with all might
then, when he finally had enough free time again— he decided to go on pinterest
but instead of finding any heroes he could look at, he found the prettiest human being he has ever seen in his entire life 💀
that person was a different type of beauty, y’know— they weren’t just fashionable, but their beauty was,,
timeless? that’s how he’d describe it. yeah. that person lived in his head rent free for a while
sadly, he feels like you’re that person he sees once in his life, and never again 😔 which isn’t the case
when he finally meets you, midoriya realizes that you look VERY familiar— someone on pinterest, that he unfortunately, didn’t know the name of
but then wait! he realizes that you’re that person. that one person that blew up on pinterest, and ended up in all of the fashion boards.
okay, you’ve been recognized a few times in the past, just because you were pinterest famous— but you didn’t expect him to recognize you
“wait,, you know me?” you asked him when you saw the realization sink in
and you were honestly,, flattered when he went on a tangent on how you were on all of the pinterest boards, and how your sense of fashion was timeless
but you know what’s the best thing of it all? when izuku developed a crush on you (and not because he thought you were just an attractive face)
it was very easy to find pictures of you online! he says it’s for research but,, he tends to look at them for a long time
probably has 3-4 pages dedicated to your hero costume— since fashion icon = fashionable, yet a very practical hero costume!
does he get jealous whenever people fawn over your looks, or whenever he sees comments in pinterest comment sections just asking for your socials in such desperation?
hmm,, yes? he does occasionally feel like someone like you, should be with someone as equally beautiful as you
he thought he was always plain looking, but you wholeheartedly disagree! in fact, you fell in love with his ability to pay attention to detail.
to the random creeps in the comments section, he just contacts the uploader and asks them to delete any malicious comments and it works 100% of them time.
on the brighter side, he helps a lot with taking your pictures (if you ask him to) and sometimes! he’ll even appear in them
izuku will always be your #1 fan!
Tumblr media
bakugou katsuki
at first, you’d be like “katsuki owning pinterest? naaah.” but! i think he would
being an all might fan, he liked looking at all might screen caps— and while katsuki would be on the discreet side, he’d find himself looking at them whenever he has extra minutes to burn
not to mention, the cooking recipes on there aren’t the worst, so he doesn’t just use pinterest to look at screen caps of heroes doing their work
and, how could he forget that you’ve been bugging him to search for rare screen caps? he says that it’s useless— but he finds himself digging for you anyway,
which is whyyy
he finds an entirely different rabbit hole, and it’s way past 10pm, 3 more minutes wouldn’t wound him.
the blond doesn’t know how he even stumbled on.. this side of pinterest. the one that kind of hurts his eyes.
the more well known side of pinterest, that is covered in pictures of fashion boards, and the standard pretty person.
the ‘aesthetic’ side, kaminari calls it— it makes bakugou cringe, and he was just about to refresh his page
when he spots something familiar, it’s you‼️ well it wasn’t just you but, you were dressed in something,, nice.
like sure! you’re attractive. but that’s not why he’s dating you, there’s a lot of reasons as to why
but, he’s baffled. seeing you in a different light, and in such nice clothing, what more, when he sees that you’re actually everywhere. he hasn’t seen this much of you and your attractive ass before
katsuki told himself that he was going to sleep a few minutes ago, but now? he’s left admiring all of your pictures.
how did he not know that his s/o’s pinterest famous? you’re practically in every single board!
he confronts you the next day in an oddly weird manner, “you didn’t tell me you were famous on that stupid pinterest app.”
you’re sheepish, “welll, i didn’t know that you were going to stumble on that side of pinterest!”
he doesn’t say anything, and really! it looks like he doesn’t care about the newest discovery of his s/o
but he shows his feelings in his own way.
like, how katsuki insists that he finds a new outfit that you’d absolutely love— one that’ll fit with your aesthetic
and that he insists that he does your graphic liner, because you’re going to ‘poke your eyes out’
makes an entirely different account to reply to those simps and creeps in the comment section, sort of like
random pinterest user : “the things i’ll do to be crushed by them 💦”
pinterestuser461903 : “go touch some fucking grass.”
also would’ve commented “your art sucks” at the poorly done drawings of you in the comments, but knows you appreciated the art— so he doesn’t
(still thinks the fanart doesn’t do you enough justice)
he’ll be super proud when someone notices you in person like “yeah that’s fucking right, but too bad they’re super attractive and way out of your league.”
in short, it looks like katsuki doesn’t care at all about your pinterest famous life, but he’s your #1 supporter
Tumblr media
todoroki shouto
i am certain for this one— he doesn’t have pinterest
well, he didn’t have pinterest, until midoriya convinced him to create an account, but it kinda just ended at that
but the person that actually made him use pinterest was sero, because he kept bugging him to give it a try
todoroki finds the app very practical— he can find screen caps of heroes in action, and he can also find oddly helpful tips in cooking (and in anything)
but sero was like “todoroki, what about the aesthetic value??” and todoroki didn’t really get that part to be honest 💀
todoroki, being clueless didn’t know what to search for— so sero being the wonderful friend he is, helped him search for it
and that’s when it happened. it didn’t take that long, but they eventually found an entire section just full of pictures of you; their classmate and crush
“is that Y/N?” mina notices what they’re looking at, and she observes the picture “oh wow— it is her! no wonder why she looked familiar.”
“it’s impressive! our classmate is pinterest famous!” they continue to look at every single post in each board, and todoroki’s left to observe in silence
he has definitely taken a liking to you, even if he didn’t realize it at first— he liked you because of your hard work when it came to training, personality and patience, not because of your looks
obviously, todoroki thinks that you look good in anything, trashbag style or not. but seeing you in this light was interesting.
so after training, todoroki would spent a good portion of his time scavenging for more pictures— not because he was obsessed or anything
but because,, he really liked your pictures. maybe it was because without you in those pictures, it would feel incomplete
he didn’t know how to approach you after this discovery, which is why he’s glad that you approached him first
“todoroki! what are you looking at?” you took a peak at his screen, and you’re baffled to see yourself, and that very famous picture of you
he’s quiet for a second when he realizes that you’ve caught him staring at your pictures, but he explains calmly, “sero accidentally discovered your pictures,, and i just wanted to take a peak at them, if it was okay,,”
and he’s relieved— well, you’re also relieved. you didn’t know how your crush would react if he ever saw those pictures, but your heart skipped a beat knowing that he enjoyed looking at them
“it’s alright todoroki,” you smile, honestly over the moon as you spoke “i’m really glad that you like them.”
sometimes you’d get shy whenever he’d go on pinterest just to look at your pictures, “todoroki, not that one! that one was really old,,” is what you’d say whenever he’d look at your older photos but he’d still look at them anyway 💀
at first, todoroki helped you in his own subtle way. since he’s quite the fashion icon— he’d recommend you clothes to wear for future pictures
he eventually confessed— and it was because you were talking to him while he was really tired, and he blurted out that he really, really liked you and you almost passed away because of his words
so yeah— it was a case of secretly admiring their beautiful best friend to lovers scenario
he’d go the full mile when it came to taking your pictures. he’d check the weather forecast just in case if it was going to rain for that date, and impromptu picnic photoshoot
that boyfriend that has pictures of you in his photo gallery, and has a backstory for each photo if anyone were to ask
also that boyfriend that knows how to take pictures, will probably even lay down to take them, even if you didn’t kindly ask him to
when you asked him to join the picture, he didn’t really know how to— but he made it work! and the both of you guys went viral
but this isn’t all one sided, no— whenever you guys would cuddle, shouto would simply stare at you with HEARTS in his eyes,
and even before he leans in for a kiss, he’ll stare at you with so much love in his eyes, while he traces his thumb across your cheekbones. man’s in love— you’re gorgeous.
he knows that you know that he’s not with you because of any ulterior motive, you both have mutual trust in each other— so it’s not something you guys will bother on questioning because you’re both hot asf lets be real
he’s not uncomfortable whenever people gawk at you in public— i mean, you two get stares on the regular. and how could they not stare at you? you’re very attractive, and he’s glad that people recognize that
but he’ll get protective if they’ll try to be a threat to your loving relationship with him, he won’t be afraid to be blunt
regarding the comments on each pinterest post— he hates it when people say things out of the line
always tries to hide them from you so you don’t feel bothered by them, but if you knew about them— he’ll be sad :,(
but he’ll end up mass reporting those nasty comments— and they always get taken down, because of the shouto todoroki luck
in short? man’s whipped, and the both of you guys are SO attractive together— what more if people knew about the om chemistry?
really— you being pinterest famous was just a nice plus, he fell in love with you for you

YouTube Updates Its Wardrobe
Two weeks ago, an email appeared in my inbox announcing the launch of YouTube/Fashion.  I was slightly puzzled because YouTube already has tons of videos and channels, of which I am a frequent viewer, dedicated to just that. I soon found out that /Fashion is the platform’s newest upgrade—an all-in-one destination for beauty, fashion, style, and so much more. It’s no coincidence that YouTube launched this new hub on the eve of New York Fashion Week, a strategic move to gain early momentum while all eyes are on the runway. The channel aims to seat content from industry professionals like Vogue right next to young bloggers like Emma Chamberlain. Spearheading this project is Director of YouTube Fashion and Beauty, Derek Blasberg, who himself has mastered the social media game with an impressive 912.5k Instagram followers. To add to the excitement of the launch, Blasberg himself hosted a star-studded party attended by a broad range of models, athletes, influencers, and the like.
Before the birth of /Fashion, the results of a fashion content search on YouTube were based on a personalized algorithm. Now, users can find everything they could possible want, from style vlogs to professional recordings of runway shows all in one place. In contrast to the white aesthetic of the basic YouTube website, YouTube/Fashion appears on the user’s screen in a sleek dark gray and black theme. And just in case you had any doubts about the success of YouTube’s new venture, displayed on the homepage is the number 940,000, that is, the number of subscribers the channel has attracted in a mere two weeks of existence. Scroll down and you can find “shelves” of beauty tutorials, style stories, day-in-the-life vlogs, and a carefully curated selection of other fashion-related YouTubers to follow. This page is an absolute dream for anyone with an interest in style and fashion.
Tumblr media
YouTube/Fashion, although an exciting new endeavor, is not a surprising one. It’s no secret that video streaming has become a part of daily life, especially for Millennials and Gen Zers. A member of Gen Z spends an average 54% of their digital time watching video content and 25% of that time is spent on YouTube specifically. YouTube itself has seen absurdly large increases in content views over the course of the past 10 years. In 2002, the platform had a total of 2 billion content views. Sound like a lot? Well, fast forward to 2018 and you’ll see that that number has grown to a whopping 18 billion content views. That’s almost 2.5 views for every person walking on earth!!!
youtube
So, if finding the viewers isn’t a problem, then what is? Well, with a constantly changing digital landscape, traditional fashion brands and content creators have some pretty steep learning curves. For example, Louis Vuitton recently produced a video collab with Emma Chamberlain, and 18-year-old vlogger with a faithful audience. The timeless brand’s video attracted 2 million viewers. Pretty good right? Wrong. Miss Chamberlain also posted her own video focusing on her collaboration with the brand and attracted five times as many views. Imagine that: a brand that’s over 150 years old isn’t even close to competing with a teenager! To clarify the nuances of video content creation, David Blasberg published an internal memo of do’s and don’ts for brands and creators hoping to earn spots on its /Fashion page:
·“Don’t make it a TV show. Audiences want to feel like this is your channel — to spend time with the real you, not to watch videos about you.”
·“Don’t make it too promotional. If you love something shout it out once (twice at most) per video. But repeating a brand, location, or event’s name over and over again makes content feel promotional. (However, if you’re getting paid, that’s great — ignore this tip.)”
·“Do keep it cute. We can run promotion driving lots of views to your videos if there is no swearing (or at least bleeped out in post), no vulgar behavior, no copyrighted content and no 3rd party brand deal.”
We’ll have to wait and see how fashion brands and style content creators rise to the occasion, but one thing is clear: when it comes to getting views, the kids might know best!

Social Media & Participatory Culture
Participatory culture. We know it today as “how-to” videos on Youtube, retweeting or resharing a post on Twitter or Facebook, fan fiction writing, podcasting, blogging or subscribing to various online communities. Everywhere we look on digital sites or platforms, people are taking part in participatory culture. Users have strayed from just consuming media to now being active manufacturers of media. In Henry Jenkins TEDxNYED, he describes participatory culture as simply “throwing ideas into the world and people bringing them back in an improved way.” This idea relates strongly to social media due to the fact that every enhanced retweeted, repinned, reshared post is users taking part in participatory culture. Users post a photo or tweet, then the next user makes a new tweet from it or edits the photo or even makes a podcast from the ideas presented from the original post. Even editorial sources are taking part in participatory culture by implementing live Twitter streams on their websites to show live conversation of news and popular culture.
According to a study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life project, more than one-half of all American teens - and 57 percent of teens who use the internet- could be considered creators (Jenkins, Puroshotma, Clinton, Weigel, & Robison, 2009). This number has since changed to 65% of teens producing media (Jenkins, 2010). With this in mind, I began to analyze my own “participation” habits and concluded that I feel as though I am equal parts of a consumer and a producer. Being a strategic communications major, I consume a lot of media - whether it be social media, blogs, podcasts, Youtube videos, etc. On the other hand, I also produce a lot of media, especially social media. I have a deep passion for graphic design, and although I am not a graphic design major or a professional Adobe InDesigner, I still like to think I have an eye for social media design. This being said, I have had plenty of internships in which I created social graphics or crafted blogs that require design inspiration. For me, Pinterest is a platform in which I find myself inspired. I love aesthetically pleasing graphics and Pinterest allows me to find inspiration and then put my spin on content found. (Examples from my internship below.)

Being a student also requires me to be an active online community member and curate projects that tell stories digitally. For example, one could consider Canvas as an online community as students are required to participate in class discussions, project submissions and allow them to communicate with professors and TAs. Additionally, many classes in my major have required me to make digital ads, presentations and digital magazines. These forms of media have been inspired by another form of media or formed in collaboration with a classroom team. Here, especially, we see participatory culture come to life. (A couple pages of my magazine shown below.)

As for my own personal favorite entertainment sources of “participation,” I am an avid listener of the podcast, Straight up with Stassi, subscribe to Youtuber, Emma Chamberlain, the food blog, Hungry Blonde, and, while Game of Thrones was airing, I followed and subscribed to many Twitter accounts and blogs. These are just a few of my favorite media sources to participate with. In each of these communities, the followers have similar interests to me, making it easier and more comfortable to engage with. This idea is important in participatory culture, due to the fact that there needs to be a motivator or something that sparks conversation within the media form.
Overall, when thinking of participatory culture and its relation to technology and social media, I appreciated what Jenkins stated in his TEDx talk,” We should not pay attention to the history of technology. Rather, how the people who used these technologies in history took advantage of every new technology as it was presented, as a vehicle by which to participate and engage with the world and make a difference in the community.” At the end of the day, we're all participants of the ever-evolving digital culture and it is up to us on how we make our voices heard and make a difference.
