Tiziana Mattera ************************ Connecting to this world is quite simple. The only possible access to the elemental spirits, which vibrate at a very subtle level of vibration, is through the opening of the heart. Otherwise they do not show themselves or come into contact, because the human world, at the current level of thoughts, has a level of density that is too heavy for these sensitive creatures. Over time they portrayed themselves as if in a parallel dimension. Nature spirits have a strong sensitivity and can smell the overall emanation of a person or several people. Tiziana Mattera

Hi. I'm in the Zutara fandom and a great chunk of it happened because I liked their fire-water aesthetic then later on they just made absolute sense to me after reading a lot of analyses/metas about the ship.
I sometimes like Katara and Aang together, especially when they're portrayed as older individuals and I'd like to explore them further. I would like to ask you if there are must-read analyses/metas (or even fics??) you could recommend in support of them?
Hi, anon! I want to apologize for leaving this in my inbox for so long. I wanted to make sure I was able to devote time and mental energy to answer this and I haven't had much of either, lately. Also full disclosure that this is a kataang blog and I mostly block content from other katara and/or aang ships, NOT because I don't support it (ship and let ship and all that!), just because I try to curate my internet and fandom experience to be one that I fully enjoy.
I love love love reading (AND writing) older kataang. I've actually been enjoying middle-aged domestic kataang a lot recently, probably because I am a middle-aged domestic myself, haha. There are a lot of great metas out there. This is one of my favorites, which goes into the three possibilities of Katara and Aang's relationship post-series. Also this one which shows the way kataang's relationship develops over the course of the show. There is also an entire @kataang-meta-archive blog where you can peruse some of the metas that have been written on the ship (the blog hasn't been updated in a bit, and since it's a collection you can expect some metas to be more thoughtful or in-depth than others, but there are a lot of good analyses there).
As for fics, oh, there are so many.
Broken Pieces Still Belong (rated T) by @thinkingisadangerouspastime is not technically a shipping fic, but a canon-compliant exploration of Katara and her grief and her feelings and motivations throughout the second half of book 3 and her journey towards forgiveness.
Blue Ribbons (rated T) by @justoceanmyth is a beautiful exploration of Katara's understanding of and relationship with Aang's tattoos and his scar. It takes place after they're married and has a lot of amazing cultural elements too.
The Ghosts That We Knew (rated T) by @itsmoonpeaches is an amazing, haunting post-war story involving spirity shenanigans, delicious foods, murder attempts, and a vengeful Katara.
Three Times (rated G) by silverthunder is a missing scene fic that explores Katara's feelings about Aang when he's missing during the finale.
Without Water (rated T) by @chocomd is one I'm still in the process of reading (like I said, not a lot of time recently) but it's AMAZING--it takes place in the time between books 2 & 3, where Aang is in a coma.
And since you said you particularly like the idea of them older (I get it, they do seem to get together really young if you're thinking of them in our world/universe), here are a few fics where they still get together young, then break up or are separated for some reason, then (I'm assuming in one case since the fic isn't finished yet!) get back together again when they're older:
Drag You Down (rated G) by @chocomd (still in progress)
This List from @thekataang-fanfiction-archive but be warned that many of them are rated M or E (not all, though).
Unspoken, Undeniable (rated T... so far) is one that I've been working on. It's not a break-up/separation story, but a fake-dating in-universe AU where they don't kiss on the sub or at EIP or in the finale but remain best friends, until Aang comes of age and the powers-that-be start pressuring him into something he doesn't want. It's still in progress as well.
I hope this helps, anon! And know that I'm not trying to "convert" you or anything--I fully support everyone's right to ship and let ship! You asked for recommendations and this is what I could think of off the top of my head (and with extensive help from friends). I do love kataang and love to talk about and write about and explore their relationship, though, so if you have any other questions or want more recommendations of different types, please feel free to reach out! I also want to say I really appreciated the respectful and kind way this ask was phrased, despite "ship wars" (which I do my best to avoid and it sounds like you do, too). Thank you so much for the ask!

It only just recently occurred to me but; if Evil Chase Young’s feline army of fallen great warriors consists mostly of Tigers and the Evil alternate reality Master Monk Guan has his filled mostly with black Jaguars, then does that mean that, had it have been Grandmaster Dashi who was corrupted by Hannibal Roy Bean, his fallen warrior cat army would have been comprised mostly of Lions? Come to think of it; what would his monstrous Heylin alternative form have been?
The fact that there are three main jungle cat types shown and three members of Dashi's trio is a neat coincidence! Chase favoring tigers fits into his dragon-and-tiger philosophy, Guan's preference for panthers is interesting, so an evil Dashi theoretically having an army consisting mainly of lions would be perfect!
With on main caveat. I don't think Dashi would be gathering other warriors and making them submit to him like Chase and Guan do. It just doesn’t seem like his style, and one thing I like about the soup changes is that there is a some twisted part of that original personality left.
But I do still love the imagery of Dashi with lions.
So I imagine statuesque imperial guardian lions that are either transformed forms of other monster or magic-powered golems similar to Wuya's. Maybe whatever that would look like in cloud form, to fit the wind element.
As for Dashi's monstrous Heylin alternative form, I haven't thought about it. If I had to guess, I'd imagine it's got an ethereal sort of intimidation about it. Something wispy and fluffy and larger than life, with tendrils and fins and this otherworldly shape to it. Something that’s a shape contrast to the sort of intimidation that the monstrous forms of Chase and Guan command.
Like...
Tumblr media
Imagine this thing, but more wind elemental than water elemental. Or something a little like a Darkside from Kingdom Hearts?
Dashi's monster form would very hard to hit, practically impossible to pin down, spirity and light but hits very hard.

Legend of Korra rewrite
So what happens when you cross caffeine-induced insomnia with a brain willing to fixate on the most random shit imaginable? Apparently a remainder that I’m still salty about all the ways Nickelodeon fucked over Legend of Korra by not letting it have a multiple season arc greenlit from the beginning. What’s there is already good considering the parameters Bryke had to work with, but only getting one season ordered at a time with studio execs prodding at various plot elements means a lot of potential was squandered.
My 3am brain decided to fix it.
This isn’t a comprehensive beat-beat-by-beat rewrite, I don’t have time for that. It also might not be entirely coherent because, again, 3am brain. I’ll only be focusing on the main characters since they’re the ones doing the most to drive the plot forward.
Before we begin, let’s talk themes. If we’re going to have an overarching, coherent narrative, we’re going to need to give it themes, for flavour. I really like the way LOK used each season to explore the flaws of different political frameworks (e.g. populism, anarchism) but there’s nothing to tie it all together, and the story becomes less about Korra and more about the world she inhabits. In this rewrite, Korra’s journey will come back into focus, and will (like TLA) explore a theme of balance. Specific to yin-yang, there are a bunch of oppositions that relate to each other – chaos/order, tradition/change, altruism/selfishness, freedom/boundaries – none of which are inherently bad, and neither side better than the other. There is no good and evil, only balance and the lack of it. For Korra as well, there will be the theme of legacy, of forging your own path instead of being defined by people’s expectations, of letting go of self-image, and of finding strength in community.
Here we go.
SEASON 1
·        For the most part, unchanged. It’s pretty solid. Could maybe do without the weird double love triangle that was going on for most of it so we could dedicate more time to Korra finding community, and establishing what role the avatar might play in a world that’s seemingly in balance.
·        HOWEVER. I would add at least one extra episode to the ending, and change it just a bit. We’re also going to set up season 2.
·        By the end of the season, Korra does not get back the elements Amon took from her. At least not yet. Instead of being useless, Katara, whose character is not completely betrayed in this version, does manage to undo the damage Amon did, because she mastered bloodbending at 14 and is the world’s best healer according to everyone in the room. So what’s the problem? Korra won’t wake up. She’s trapped in the spirit world, either because of her guilt at being such a failure (in her mind) or because something is keeping her there, but there’s no way to tell which it is.
·        Korra, in the spirit world, is lost. She hears someone behind her, turns with a fire kick ready to defend herself, and… it’s Aang. He points out that bending doesn’t work in the spirit world, he found that out the hard way when he had to walk through an entire forest instead of using his glider. He tells her to follow him.
·        In the real world, it’s early morning, the fire’s low, everyone’s asleep. Someone (Mako? Asami?) wakes up and starts shouting because Korra’s gone. There’s a search party. Naga’s still in her pen, but there are footprints leading to a cliff and then… nothing. We’ve circumvented the execs worry about depicting suicidal ideation by making it clear first that Korra is off doing spirity things, and Katara, who is wise, tells everyone that they need to trust in the avatar.
·        Repercussions: Unalaq turns up with troops from the North ostensibly to rescue Korra. When it’s pointed out that she’s in the spirit world, he asks how they can know for sure. After all, someone tried to kidnap her once before (“And you couldn’t protect her then, either – could you brother? Someone else had to do it”). Name drop the Red Lotus, but they won’t be important until later.
·        This is just a ruse to start the occupation. Aside from Unalaq having shady evil plans, the South has lost its way, they lost the avatar, and they owe the North for all the rebuilding they did after the 100 Years War (sarcastic huzzah for colonialism!) The last shot of the season is a mass of Northern ships advancing on the South in a direct parallel to the shot in the opening of TLA. (This also removes the contrivance of Korra being naïve enough to believe a word of anything her obviously evil uncle says.)
SEASON 2
·        Korra washes up on a Fire Nation beach and is found by the priestess lady who in this version is definitely Azula btw. She’s chill after 70 years. The opening of this season is the two-parter where we learn the origins of the avatar because a) it interrupts the story less to put it here and b) it’s a far more organic way for her to relearn how to connect with all her elements that ties into her character growth instead of being another Lion Turtle-ex-machina. She also learns that harmonic convergence is coming, but not quite yet (it won’t be the S2 finale but more on that later) and that she needs to find out where Vaatu’s prison is so that she can keep him there.
·        Meanwhile, in the South: Civil war. Katara is among the first to stand up to the occupation and fights back (the South knows how to fight, it spent 100 years fighting while the North cowered behind its high walls and did nothing) because her character is not completely betrayed in this version of events. She will not let her people be subjugated again. The others want to stay and help, but the Southern benders are holding their own for now what they really need is outside help to get the North to back down (and we haven’t seen this much politics in kids media since the Star Wars prequels). Tenzin and family head to the Fire Nation to get help from Zuko/Izumi. Lin, who has her bending back thanks to Katara, goes back to Republic City to garner support from the United Forces. Asami and Mako go with her – Asami to sort out Future Industries, Mako because it sucks being a firebender at the south pole in winter, and because he wants to help Lin. He has to let go of his need overprotectiveness because Bolin stays and joins the rebellion. There is not a weird abusive romantic subplot between him and Eska.
·        Korra finally gets back from the spirit world. Hears about trouble in the South from Azula, and her first instinct is to rush off to the south pole, but harmonic convergence is a bigger threat to everyone. Like Aang, she has to choose between her duties to the world and her attachment to her people. She’s persuaded to find Tenzin/Jinora instead, and gets given a sky bison.
·        Tonraq gets captured, but not before learning why his brother REALLY wants to get to the portal in the spirit trees. Nobody else finds out. For dramatic irony. And so the audience can get a bit of exposition without it seeming clunky. He’s been weakening the boundary between the spirit world and the waking world in preparation for letting Vaatu out, and that’s why there are spirits running amok everywhere. Fighting is getting worse.
·        All the events in Republic City still happen, maybe with tweaks but not enough to change the direction of the plot.
·        Korra finds Jinora, and together they set off for the spirit world. Yes Korra still gets lost. Last time she had Aang as a guide but a) without him she doesn’t know how to navigate b) she’s still new to this whole spirituality thing c) since she was last in the spirit world Unalaq’s destabilisation of the boundary means things are a lot more chaotic anyway. Yes we still see Iroh, and he helps her, and we get a showdown in front of Vaatu’s tree. He mocks Raava for being too late to stop him. But at least now they know how to get to him from the real world. Jinora still gets kidnapped.
·        The S2 finale is mostly the same, except Unalaq does not join with Vaatu. Vaatu promised that’s what would happen but Vaatu is a spirit of chaos and discord, he is inherently selfish, so instead feeds on Unalaq to free himself. There is no giant battle between spirit Korra and spirit Unalaq, we are not in Pacific Rim. Also, the battle between Raava and Vaatu is not good/evil, but they are in opposition.
·        Most importantly, the good guys lose the finale. The big final battle happens to stop Unalaq getting to the Tree of Time, and they’re too late. Vaatu is freed and his prison, the Tree of Time, is destroyed in the process. Chaos ensues. (This is what brings the airbenders back but we don’t know this yet.) Harmonic convergence is looming, Team Avatar’s job now is to find a way to beat him now that the tree of time has been destroyed.
SEASON 3
·        Spirits of chaos have unleashed airbenders. Oops, that includes Zaheer. They’re here to fuck shit up.
·        Season 3 is generally pretty good and well-paced, and the finale is banger, so most things will be kept the same except the chaos the Red Lotus creates in the Earth Kingdom is directly feeding Vaatu, making him stronger. Korra’s trip to the spirit world to learn the origins of the Red Lotus is slightly different. Instead of Zaheer, she connects with her previous lives. She and Kyoshi get on like a house on fire. Kyoshi explains the Red Lotu’s origin, but Zaheer has been waiting for her, attuned to Raava’s energy. They have a fight, shows Korra is improving in her spirituality by how she can manipulate the world (better resolution for that arc, consistency between seasons is nice), but she’s no match for Zaheer. Tries to warn him about Vaatu but he argues that by fusing with Raava the avatar disrupted the balance of the universe and that he’s helping put it back. The people who are going to die because of this will simply be redressing the balance. This fight is what keeps Korra distracted while the rest of the Red Lotus attacks.
·        Finale is banger, keep it as it is.
SEASON 4
·        Kuvira’s motivation now isn’t just trying to restore order in the Earth Kingdom power vacuum, she also knows harmonic convergence is coming and wants to impose order to stop Vaatu winning since the avatar is AWOL/not recovered. During the early part of S3 world leaders were warned about harmonic convergence but since it’s traditionally the avatar’s job to deal with spirits, nothing was really done.
·        She’s actually making the problem worse.
·        Team Avatar and the airbenders etc all fall on different sides of the ‘how to stop 10,000 years of darkness’ discussion, and without the avatar as a unifying voice, it’s making the problem worse.
·        Most of the plot beats stay the same, but there is no giant robot shooting spirit plant lasers at things, because. Well. We’re not in Pacific Rim. Kuvira can still be forcing Varrick to build her superweapons, though, as a treat.
·        The big finale finale is harmonic convergence. Vaatu manifests, stronger than last time because he’s been feeding on the chaos of the human world, and now there’s no Tree of Time to imprison him. What will Korra do next?
·        The avatar cycle is broken. Kora wins, but at the cost of her connection with Raava, because Raava is the only one who can really control him in the end. Their struggle is eternal. Think Ed vs Truth at the end of FMA:B. All the experience of the past avatars feeds into Raava’s power and it counterbalances Vaatu, Korra lets go, and the two “destroy” each other locked together. The explosion of spirit energy brings about a new spiritual age. Maybe Korra keeps her waterbending, maybe she loses her bending entirely (which would be a nice bit of symmetry with the concerns of S1) but she still steps into the spirit portal with Asami at the end.

TELL ME ABOUT WILL'S AIRBENDING
ok taking a break from mike and firebending to talk about will's airbending a little bit. (also as an aside rori your tag "3. gayass" just made me fucking die YOU'RE SO RIGHT THOUGH AND YOU SHOULD SAY IT LOUDER)
i suppose i should talk to you about will and his airbending tattoos, huh?
@messrsbyler came up with a LOT of this as well so i am tagging them, because we've been throwing around ideas back and forth to make will's spirit world experience/trauma! so! freaking! awful! :D sorry will.
i think i've already established in some other asks or rambles about how will, of all the party members, loves his bending the most. whereas dustin is a nonbender, lucas hates that he doesn't do well in combat bending, and mike just can't seem to get his firebending down, will loves airbending. he's not a natural at it, per se, but he's good at it. and jonathan is a good teacher. he doesn't just teach will the techniques of airbending, but he also teaches them their heritage as airbenders. he talks about the air nomad genocide, about the culture that was lost and that avatar aang fought to rebuild after the 100 year war. the two of them try to adopt as many ancient air nomad traditions as they can as will learns from his brother. (side note. i am emotional thinking about jonathan not enjoying bending but knowing his brother does, so he goes to the library and researches as much as he can so he can do this well and can teach will all the beauty of their element that jonathan never got to experience)
so right before the story picks up (which, by the way, i'm placing them at about 14 years old at book 1 because ST S3 is getting deleted and the time skip probably is too, so this lands the kids are around 17 years old if each book is a year apart), will can be considered an airbending master and get his tattoos. and god, he's so excited about it. this is what connects him to this community other airbenders, to this rich history he's part of, to a heritage and a culture and an art form that he's proud of. and he'll get to have tattoos just like his brother too, and the party is so excited for him too.
will gets his tattoos right before his kidnapping—literally right before, as in his skin is still tender and still healing from the tattoos and barely a few days later, he's getting dragged into the spirit world and running for his life. and his bending is the lifeline that saves him because he wouldn't survive there without it.
that's when he runs into henry for the first time.
this right here is mostly nic, genius that they are! again, the whole spirit-y connection henry (and will actually) has is still being fleshed out, but for now, we're establishing a couple things: 1) will is dragged into the spirit world by spirits because of an already existing predisposition/deeper connection to spirits and 2) henry does some advanced, rare form of airbending on will in the spirit world that nearly kills him. as henry almost kills will in that, at the last minute, will instinctively taps into whatever deeper connection he has to the spirit world (helllooooo will byers power arc), pushing himself into a sort of avatar-like state (in that he's connected to the spirit world on a deeper level than most people are able to), complete with glowy spirity nonsense on his tattoos, like you would expect with the avatars.
except it's too much. will is doing this on pure instinct, and he's tapping into spiritual powers beyond his control, and his body can't handle it. so it's the result of that avatar-like state/those spiritual energy in will's body that ends up scarring him because he can't handle/control it.
and to make all of this worse?
henry's an airbender right? and he's got a strong spiritual connection too and has been there in the spirit world this whole time. and so the same type of tapping into the spirit world and its energy is something henry has done before. and the same thing happened to henry's airbender tattoos—so now will literally looks more like his abuser than he does other airbenders. his tattoos are scarred, and he can't look at them without thinking about that ordeal.

FUEGUIA 1833 - LA JOVEN NOCHE - Fábula Fauna Collection - Parfum -
La Cura.
Everything that exist is alive and has a spirit. There is an energy that connects everything to each other and this is what is called the web of life. We, as part of Nature, can commune with trees, plants, animals, rocks, clouds, as well as with every element of earth, air, water and fire. We only need to see and heal, Nature in essence is a symbolic mirror of our soul.

Okay, this is being put up at the request of @callistochan87.  Which...fair enough, since I was actually going to do something with this a few days ago before my muse shifted onto something else *shrugs*
Because I am notorious for being cryptic in these things to the point where future me never has a clue what the hell I had planned, I figured, for her sake, I'll write down stuff in case I look back on this later and had forgotten what I had planned.  Bleh. So, anyway, @callistochan87 has been trying to convince me to make ES an original sci-fi story for a while now. Which...I've been fighting her on merely because the uniforms are so pretty, but at the same time, I can make the story work without the magical girl aspect.  And writing magical girl stories was easier back when this was created because of the influx of fan-fics out there.  So that might be one reason this story has been sitting in limbo for the past ten+ years.
Sooo...a bit of history/plot.  About 1000 years ago, the planet of Novis was at the end of a civil war.  The Realm of Spirits had been taken over by a rogue demon who they called Lady Spirit, because they never learned her real name, who had been trying to conquer the entire planet while pretending to be the priestess of Spirits.  The other priestesses managed to defeat her, but all they could do was seal her away.  They knew eventually she was going to be able to break free, and that the only person who could truly defeat her was the priestess of light. Now, the problem is that the priestess of light had been missing for millennia, so the rulers of the other kingdoms, save for one, decided that they needed to go and find the missing priestess.  They've been searching planet to planet, living the lifespans of the people as they search.  The latest planet is Earth.
The people of Novis have been living fairly peacefully this entire time, but have just started getting reports that Lady Spirit has either started to break free, or is about to.  So the last remaining priestess sends messengers in order call back her sisters so they could take on the threat.  But the problem is no one knows who they are or what they look like.
So the basic plot of the story is searching for the reincarnated priestesses while also fighting the demons Lady Spirit sends to stop the messengers/priestesses, and then, ya know, preparing for Lady Spirit's return while also lowkey looking for the priestess of light as well (which is not Adrianna, if that's what you're thinking).
So the first set of designs is the main designs of their human forms.
Adrianna Roderick: main character, about 16-17.  She's just this average high school girl who gets caught up in this nonsense because she finds Celedonia.  She mostly agrees to it because she kind of feels bad for Celedonia, and wants to help after hearing her story.
Jake O'Reilly: love interest, about 16-17.  He's also this average high school kid, although he's considered extremely popular for reasons he doesn't understand.  He's Addy's best friend since they were babies, since they grew up next door to each other, and he gets involved because Addy's involved.  And he's been in love with her for quite some time, so he's not about to let her do something dangerous without him.
Melanie Roland: best friend, about 16-17.  She's, well, she's the true priestess of spirits, although none of the other priestesses realize that she's been following them.  She cares deeply for both Addy and Jake, and is a general all around nice girl, for the most part.  She's the main reason Addy, and Jake by extension, end up traveling to Novis with the others.
Isabel Easton: the leader, about 17-18.  She's the most popular girl at school (or was, depending on how old I make them).  Everyone loves Isabel.  This is mostly because she's actually the priestess of water, who lead the other priestesses.  She's sort of iffy about Addy and Jake helping out at first, but she quickly comes around.
Tessa Easton: the leader's sister, about 15-16.  She's an extreme tomboy, very into sports and the like.  She and Isabel get along extremely well despite being complete and utter opposites.  In fact, it’s best not to make fun of Tessa, because Isabel will end you if you do.  Tessa is the priestess of earth, and she and the priestess of water were sisters on Novis as well.
Natsumi Fukioka: the smart one, about 18-19.  She’s the oldest of the group, and was born in Japan rather that the US.  She obviously made it a point to get her butt over to the US to meet up with the others, and she’s an international college student.  She’s also the priestess of fire.
Rachel Hamilton: ???, about 14-15.  She’s the youngest of the group, and was born in England.  But she moved to the US when she was very young because of her father’s business, so she was basically raised American.  Addy sort of knows about her prior to all this because her younger brother has a crush on her.  She’s also the priestess of lightning.
The next set of designs is basically how they look on Novis.  So, ya know, the priestesses get their original hair color back, asand then Addy and Jake get theirs thanks to being introduced to magic or some such nonsense.  I really, really like how these designs come out.  I might do something later (maybe) showing what they really, really looked like in the past, but *shrug*.  I was honestly just trying to come up with outfit designs as well as figuring out their original hair colors.
So the priestess’ names are: Spira, Naida, Demetra, Ignia, and Eletra.
The last set are just the random extra characters of the story.
Zephira: she’s the priestess that was left behind to watch over Novis and the one who sent Celedonia and Aquarius in order to let the others know about Lady Spirit’s reawakening.
Celedonia: she’s sort of the main messenger, and Zephira’s younger sister.   She took on the from of the bird there to disguise herself for whatever reason, and was attacked by something which lead her to Addy’s window.  She decides she needs some help finding the priestesses, which is why she asks Addy and Jake to assist her.
Aquarius: he’s the other messenger sent, although he was sent by the actual people of Novis.  he takes on the form of the cat there.  He actually comes upon Isabel extremely fast, but she doesn’t quite want to go back just yet, so she pretty much keeps him a secret for a while.  He has a crush on Celedonia, although he doesn’t really want to admit it.
Felina: one of Lady Spirit’s minions who was sent to Earth in order to find the priestesses and kill them before they could return to Novis.  She’s, for the most part, a pacifistic, not really wanting to fight, but knowing in order to survive, she has to stay on Lady Spirit’s good side.  She’s a fairly young demon, all things considered, and prone to failure.
Mukesh: the other one of Lady Spirit’s minions who was sent to Earth.  He was a general in her army during the initial attack, and was just sent back to the Realm of Spirits rather than sealed like she was. where he found Felina.  He joined her again because he felt like it was his duty.  He’s completely in love with Felina, and does whatever he can to keep her safe, helping with her failures the best that he can.
Lady Spirit: the villain.  No one is quite sure where she came from, but she somehow managed to overthrow the sitting priestess and her family when Spira was rather young.  The other priestesses honestly thought she was the priestess of spirits for the longest time, until she started the war with the other kingdoms.
So...yeah.  I realize that’s just sort of a lot for three pictures, but meh.
(Originally, Zephira and Celedonia were going to have fairy wings, and Aquarius had gills, but I didn’t want to think of the ‘special features’ of the other people, so now they’re just, ya know, human looking aliens who have the ability to use magic.)
(Oh, and I think it’s funny looking back at old pictures and other ES stuff where I’m like TESSA IS NOT A LESBIAN, SHE TOTALLY LIKES GUYS, and now I’m like, lol, guess what?)

PSA to all the witches
It’s okay to question your craft. It’s okay to change your path. It’s okay to see what is working for you, and what is not. There is no shame in deciding, that some stuff are just not for you. There is no shame in breaking up relationships with spirits and deities. There is no shame in stoping being witch, or taking a break. Questioning your craft allows us to grow, to discover ourselves and that is never a bad thing. Earth is changing through the year, so why wouldn’t we?

Some Types of Shields:
As illustrated in Spiritial Protection
Wall shield: Empaths may misread this shield as irritation, annoyance, even dislike. Kinda literally putting up a wall, and empaths can feel that.
Bubble shield: viscous and permeable, 'no combat applications whatsoever' though.
Mirror shield: hard and reflective, sitting next to your aura, not inside it. Attacks can ricochet imperfectly and can hurt innocent bystanders. Anyone know how to make sure it's a return to sender?
Elemental shield: "the line between magic and energy work is very gray." She just had one inform the other. Very avatar. Pick an element or layer them.
Under the skin shield: Up through your grounding channel. Feel it filling your body, running like liquid just under the skin. = only a backup protection

Well, the reaction to the last update was so much better than I was expecting that I got kind of nervous about this update (Imposter syndrome...from myself? wut. why?! because that is how my brain works, amazing!) Nevertheless, I edited and edited, and now I am posting --and hope you all enjoy! Thank you again so much for all the support, I find myself at a loss for words sometimes (and other times with an excess that turn into awkward, nervous rambles like the above). Sending you best wishes, excerpt below ✨💙
Kissing Zuko was dreamlike, intoxicating, powerful, as though she were being melted and molded all over again, forged into something stronger than before.
Katara pulled away, breathless and flushed. “Not a dream,” she laughed.
“Not a dream,” Zuko repeated softly, sweeping hair from her face with the back of his hand. “Kind of feels like one though.”
Katara rolled onto her back to stare at the ceiling, the crystals shining like stars above them. “I know what you mean.”
“Does it…” Zuko hesitated. “Does it feel like anything else?”
“Anything spirity you mean?” Katara glanced at him.
“Yes…” His hand shuffled across the dirt floor to find hers, seeking reassurance. When their fingers were intertwined he gave a gentle squeeze. “If you’ve changed your mind and it’s too much, it’s okay. I would...understand.”

[Alessandra Pallanca] art by Urticaee ********************* Sensitive souls need rest, pauses, silence. To listen, to meet, not to feel alone in their diversity. They need beauty, harmony, of authentic and profound exchanges, of pure essences, to recharge and thus be able to continue to give light to the world. They need real music of flowers, of trees to embrace, to live with animals, to sing, to laugh, to be lighthearted. They need to do what they love, because that's what they came for. They need books written with the soul, to express their voice in art, as in action, in everyday life. They need to do what they believe in, what really makes sense to them, to make their thoughts their actions, of coherence between what they feel and what they practice every day. They need to communicate with all creatures, freely and personally, to learn to distinguish the voices of their Guides, of the ancestors, of the free spirits of the Earth. They need to learn to trust, to read the signs, to distinguish the subtle energies of nature, of the elements and of all beings. They need to fight and defend themselves, when it is necessary, without guilt, to learn to shield oneself, to protect oneself, to say no. They need to empathize with the wind, to be embraced by the water, to discover the feelings of crystals, to warm up at every fire they meet, to be able to balance their emotions. But most of all, they need to understand that their sensitivity it is their true, ancestral, sparkling and indomitable power. [Alessandra Pallanca] art by Urticaee

Your top 3 favorite long fics
oooooh this is so hard!!! There are a lot of really fantastic longfics out there, but the long-fics that have really left their mark on me as a reader and a writer are probably:
The Spirits Trilogy by kuaishu (you can find Book 1 here): This one is incomplete, still, BUT it has wrapped up most of the major plot points. The author hasn't updated it in two years so I'm not sure if it's ever going to be finished, but wow. It has everything. Angst, a little respectfully done and plot-driven spice, some INTENSE spirity shenanigans, political intrigue, internal gaang drama, air acolytes, violence/war, avatar lore, past avatars, Aang struggling really hard with something and trying to figure it all out on his own... you name it. It is SO LONG but so so worth the read.
I'm going to cheat and list two fics by DJNS because they are an absolute gift to the fandom. They're both rated M, but the included spice is very limited and included because these fics both represent their lives so well and fully, and kataang is not an abstaining couple. They're very plot-driven stories. It should be noted that both were written before LoK came out so some things aren't "canon compliant" anymore, but they're still excellent. Tales of Republic City and Smoke and Mirrors. ToRC is just an amazing depiction of kataang's and the gaang's adult lives and how they live and grow together through tragedy and celebration. There is drama and intrigue but mostly it's just so *them* and I loved reading it! Smoke and Mirrors is so DARK and has a lot of elements like torture and kidnapping and death. It had me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it.
Coming Together by cherie_berrie. It's an AU where Aang and Katara don't meet until after the war, Zuko breaks Aang out of the iceberg, and Katara is on the Republic City council. It's a complete fluff-fest, with a full plot as well, but every chapter makes my heart flutter with katara and aang meeting and falling in love and all of the beautifulness that goes with that. This fic is rated T BUT there is an optional spicy chapter at the end (the plot finishes before this chapter so it really is optional and can be skipped completely). This fic actually gave me the idea to do something similar for the AU I've been working on.
BONUS MODERN AUS: They Met On The Internet by TheRoseyOne and Apartment 3E by sycamore17. Both really really well-written kataang love stories with other major plots (Apartment 3E has a lot of sukka, while They Met on the Internet has more tokka and zuki and major major epic adventure plots).
Thanks for the ask, anon! Like I said there are lots of other great long-fics to check out, this is not the be-all-end-all list. But it's definitely a good starting place if you haven't read these yet!

@darkmagicattack has sent: Headcanon Please? @ Critias
Send me “Headcanon Please?” and I’ll reply with a random headcanon for my muse! [Accepting, specify muse]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
// I’m feeling like sharing some worldbuilding, I take into consideration for Critias’ development:
Duel spiritis =/= Kas. I feel like there is a huge misconception between both, and I don’t blame anyone for imagining they are the same thing. The show sure as hell, never bothers to establish or draw a line of distinction between them.
Contratry to what we are bound to assume (I at least did until I did my research. I thought it was just a mechanic, meant to justify the monsters & whatnot). The whole ka and ba stuff we see in the MW arc is actually, grounded on the subject of one’s soul in the Ancient Egypt period. With that said, whenever I see those monsters I interpret them as originating from a human so they are kinda of stuck within Egypt. What this essentially boils down to is: the DM Mahad and DMG Mana from the MW arc aRE NOT THE SAME ONES we see in the season 4 arc (and even in GX) [Im only naming those two, BUT this can be said about any other creature that appears in both arcs].
Duel spirits appear to heavily rely on the existence of multiple-universes, this is something far more relevant to GX than DM per say. But it still is an important difference to be aware of. I also like the idea of there existing specific universes for each archetype or element.
Magic is dead by the modern/contemporary time, in Ancient Egypt magic was showing signs of decline (as seen how only a handful of people seemed to have access to it, and it was mostly kept a secret), whereas it was at its peak when Atlantis existed.
When it comes to Atlantis, I am basing it quite a lot off Plato’s dialogues and description. As well as taking inspiration from Age of Mythology stuff for it, since that is something I’m the most familiar with.

Can people stop acting like Elsa’s back to being alone and isolated.
For one, she’s with the elemental spiritis (and in the post-credit scene it seems like Marhsmallow and the Snowgies moved to Ahtohallan). And even if you claim that’s not enough, she lives with the Northuldra.
The ending LITERALLY shows Elsa in the village, interacting with other human beings..... How tf is that the same as being alone and isolated!?

i’ve made some references to Tiashar ‘equipping’ powers, or her powers transforming based on what she has in use, so here’s how her powers work for more serious, less god mode stories:
Tiashar’s basic power allows her to digest the qualities of others, which in turn allows her the powers of someone else to an internal store of abilities. This includes physical traits, such as wings or biped legs, which are counted as powers; the more extreme or magic is put into it, the more it is exaggerated into a genuine superpower. She can gain these powers permanently with the consent of another, or gain them temporarily by devouring another (or absorbing them in some other way), in which case she gains access to that ability while they are digesting or otherwise in her body. The only real difference, mechanically, is how long she can gain it.
Tiashar can combine her different acquired abilities to create new capabilities for herself. This is also how she shapes her body. Consider something like this:
imagine an inventory screen with about 20 equipment slots or so, each one made up of smaller slots; whatever is put into these smaller ones generate a whole new ability based on what’s put into it, and together they create her body. Things like ‘biped’, ‘gills’, and other physical traits are combined to make up her body, and by swapping things out, she can alter what she can do or survive in. These traits are considered to be superpowers, and by adding in genuine powers, she can expand her scope without having to specifically power them up; making gills that can breath toxic substances, or legs that have super strength superior to the rest of her body.
Then, she has a number of secondary slots, with more minor alterations to her body. These are her superpowers, usually up to five or so at once, and again, by slotting in new traits and powers, she creates whole new superpowers by combining various abilities into a broader one. This gives her an extraordinary amount of flexibility, but she had to specialize to the point of excluding most other capability; she’s either REALLY good at fighting or REALLY good at surviving anything, but she can’t be super good at both at once.
I haven’t made up my mind yet on whether she can freely swap these out to gain new powers or adapt on the fly, or if she needs to spend longer amounts of time with a given ‘set’ before she can change out.
(Her strictly magical abilities are completely unrelated to her physical abilities and don’t qualify! However, she is unable to benefit from using her powers on magic users to gain their powers, since it’s not something she can absorb, and must learn those soul powers on her own.)
some other tweaks can include:
she MUST devour someone to develop their powers! The rule of willingness and consent still applies to make it a permanent addition, but her power is based around thematic ideas of digestion and incorporating things into her body. They’ll be popped out later or reformed once she’s internalized this change (which can take several hours to days after consuming them), but to expand who she is, she must consume!
In that same vein, she is able to work around her limitations by devouring someone and absorbing them into her body, during which she retains their abilities. This is actually a very pleasant experience for them, but she would tend to do this most when she’s in the middle of her particularly feral or gluttonous personality cycles.
In the same way, if she devours something that has no real means of giving consent, it counts as consenting anyway. Thus if she eats normal unliving food or matter, she can acquire their traits, but this is somewhat limited in scope. For example, she can’t turn herself into a cyborg by eating a mech. She CAN become one (And may already be one, using cybernetics to supplement her form) but not as a function of her powers; radically altering herself through sheer force of will is beyond the limitations of her body.
Those she eats are either absorbed into her body as mass and later ejected in a new body, or continue to exist within her, nurtured and sustained by the mysterious biological processes. being eaten by her has elements of absorption, unbirth, pseudo-pregnancy and other vore-adjacent concepts.
She might become ‘pregnant’ with new powers as she shuffles around her traits to give herself new abilities. Her belly swells as they take on a spiritial form, taking on quasi-physical manifestations within her, and she gets more gravid as they settle into her and then she incorporates them, becoming merely chubby again. This can be coupled with the idea that freely mix-and-matching is difficult for her, and she works best with established combinations. once she makes a set, she can equip it again easily, but she has to gestate a new combination whenever she wants to use that, or when she adds a new power to the mix!
It may be possible for her to lose access to her existing powers. This would require a radical blow to her psyche, however, as her powers are extensions of her world view and ways of interacting with the world around her. for what its worth, i have the idea that this happened to her relatively recently, and its why her sense of self is fractured and her memories become very indistinct past a certain point. Something BAD happened to her around that time, causing her to lose her powers.
She can also pass on her abilities to others, though the mechanics require a bit of workshopping before i make anything canon there. I’m open to suggestions for maximum sexy applications/what would be most fun!
