2023 Writing Roundup

Thanks to @welcometololaland, @rmd-writes, @kiwiana-writes, and @orchidscript for tagging me for this one. I'm also going to say thanks to everyone who tagged me in the ao3 wrapped or other round up type things; I've been putting off doing my annual writing year-in-review because I always post it on the 30th or 31st. This one is new to me and I figured why not, I'll do it now. I published 31 fics this year (so far!), so safe to say I'm putting this partly under a cut to save your dashes.

JANUARY

How’s About Cookin’ Something Up With Me? (TMFU, T, 4k) Teachers AU, Napoleon helps Illya bake cookies for a holiday party.

Love is a Deserter (TMFU, T, 3k) Post breakup getting back together fic.

it seems like some people actually liked my last fic rec, so here's another one, guys! this time i tried finding some fics that were a little different, like AUs, different POVs, rarepairs, WIPs, etc. again, these are pretty all set in canonverse (ACD or Granada) or victorian era unless specified otherwise. so without further ado, here is:

And With Him Disaster by eggshellseas (@/maxwelljacobfriedman on tumblr) 14k | Rated E Summary: John Watson is being stalked by a vampire. Notes: not-your-mother's vampire au, that's for sure. definitely read the tags before getting into this but man, this fic is so, so good. features not only vampire!holmes but also dark!holmes and it's a ride from beginning to end. ugh i want to talk more about this fic but i can't spoil anything!!

Into darkness then without a candle by Solshine (@/thehumantrampoline on tumblr) 10k | Rated T Summary: At first, Moriarty is just a disguise, like all the rest in his wardrobe; a helpful alias to bring Holmes closer to the evils he duels. And then the disguise wins at the Reichenbach Falls. AU inspired by the stage play, “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes." Notes: i can't even get into this. I CAN'T EVEN GET INTO THISSSS. there are no words. if there were, the word would be: UGH. this is such a unique fic and watson really pulls through in this. I CAN'T EVEN GET INTO THIS RIGHT NOW.

Back to Edinburgh by mightymads 4k | Rated T Summary: The Jezail bullet in Watson’s leg causes him so much pain that he is on the verge of despair. London doctors deem it impossible to extract the bullet without inevitable nerve damage. Holmes finds a surgeon in Edinburgh, who agrees to help. It is none other than Professor Joseph Bell. Notes: Dr. Bell says 'gay rights'! also Scottish Watson for the win! this is such a beautiful story, Watson really gets to take the center stage while Holmes gets to worry for his well-being. oh how the tables have turned. plus lots of ACD's personal life mixed with Watson's own, which I think makes this such a unique fic. it's just really nice to read. *chef's kiss*

The Red Notebook by Garonne 10k | Rated T Summary: Holmes is dead, or seems to be. Watson starts to write, and Mycroft starts to read. Holmes/Watson slash set during the Hiatus. Mycroft's POV. Notes: i LOVE Mycroft POVs, and this is one of my favorites. also i love fics that depict watson's stories as completely false, like Moriarty is not real and 'The Final Problem' was just john's way of coping. STELLAR FIC.

Some Power of Selection by wordybirdy 12k | Rated E Summary: John Watson is a struggling doctor in recent practice on London's Upper Wimpole Street. One dreary Wednesday, an urgent telegram summons him to 221B Baker Street, where he meets a sombre and initially taciturn gentleman by the name of Sherlock Holmes. Sparks immediately fly – but not of the positive, life-affirming variety... Notes: enemies to lovers AU for the win! Stamford is such a knob in this one, truly. but that's okay, our heroes figure themselves out anyways. great banter in this one, if you like rom-coms then this is the fic for you!

One page is missing, but otherwise they are exactly as written and show my feelings and suspicions of the moment more accurately than my memory, clear as it is upon these tragic events, can possibly do." --The Hound of the Baskervilles, Chapter 8 **** This is the missing page. Notes: ok first of all you should read all of PlaidAdder’s Missing Pages series, it’s so beautifully written. this is the first of the series and the premise is so interesting and mysterious! this fic is for any fans of HOUN (me) or enjoyers of jealous Holmes (also me)

On the Orbits of Asteroids by Sheila_Snow 22k | Rated E Summary: Watson has a secret from his past that he's kept from Holmes, but the past has a tendency to come back and haunt you. Notes: Watson/Moriarty fic. yes you read that correctly and YES it's crazy good. there's still holmes/watson but it's angsty and– i can't even get into it, you just gotta read for yourself. also feat. Moran who is currently questioning his sexuality (yeah watson will do that to you mate)

The Better Part of Valour by rachelindeed 7k | Rated T Summary: Mr Melas considers himself a coward, but more than one man's courage comes with complicated cracks. Notes: for any fans of 'The Greek Interpreter' (aka ME) this fic is the coolest ever. POV from Melas, who is smart, witty, and very observant. you get to meet Paul Kratides when he's not in the middle of being tortured, plus the ANGSTIEST background story about Watson's war injury. Oof. But I literally love this fic guys pwease read it

☆The Adventure of the Purloined Heart by ladyblahblah (@/hungrylikethewolfie on tumblr) 15k | Rated M Summary: A gruesome murder unveils secrets kept buried for years. Some feelings can only be hidden for so long. Notes: This fic checks every single box for me. HOLY SHIT. It's got murder, mystery, intrigue; it's got pining, secrets, and unrequited (?) love. I think the reason I'm so unwell about this fic is because it's a WIP that ends on a doozy of a cliffhanger. if god loves me he will let this fic be finished one day. IT'S SO GOOD GUYS PLEASE READ THIS FIC. in my ao3 history is says 'visited 12 times in the past month.' what is wrong with me

Hello and welcome to my writing corner. You can find all of my fics under TracingPatterns on AO3 but I’ve put together some of the things I’m the most proud of in this post. Wolfstar

Wilder than Mountain Thyme - E - 109k Remus Lupin is a disillusioned werewolf who has mostly turned his back on the Wizarding society, content to work his mundane muggle job. Sirius Black is wizarding royalty, or at least he was until he walked away from his pureblood family to follow his own path in life. Sometimes love is found where you least expect it, and Edinburgh is no exception.

Mr. Mouse - Teen and up - 2.9k James and Lily Potter are killed by Voldemort, but when the spell backfires off of baby Harry, Voldemort actually dies and the war ends. Instead of being shipped off to the Dursley's, Harry goes to stay with Sirius and Remus, which had always been according to his parents' wishes. This is a little snippet of their life together.

Of Quiet Hearts and Thundering Dreams - E - 46.7k Sirius Black never thought he was the kind of person who would ever settle in a sleepy village outside of London, but that was before Lily and James Potter died, leaving their son in Sirius' care. Remus Lupin never thought he would return to his childhood village, but that was before he found himself being a single parent in a foreign country. Neither of them thought they were looking for something, but maybe they were.

Betrayal - Teen and up - 4k Remus Lupin returns to Hogwarts.

Full moon - M - 1.7k Sirius’ first full moon in Azkaban.

Playing with fire - E - 7k Over the years, Sirius had perfected the careful manipulation of Remus’ possessiveness into getting exactly what he wanted, when he wanted it. He had poked and prodded and twisted and bent until he knew exactly how far Remus could be pushed before the Wolf came out. This close to the full moon it was like playing with fire and Sirius lived for the burn.

No-one say (how pretty you were) - E - 5k Remus shares a memory.

Countdown - E - 6.8k In which Remus teaches Sirius a little something about patience.

Push - E - 7.3k “Ah,” Remus said, slowly. “Decided to be difficult today, then.”

Family on the Mend - M - 76k (co-written with @heartofspells) Sirius and Remus are struggling with parenthood, stretched too thin trying to bring up two children with a significant age gap, soon-to-be-fifteen year old Harry Potter and two year old Teddy Lupin-Black. When their chaotic life boils over during a dinner party, their friends intervene and suggest they need help. Sirius and Remus both agree they can’t do it on their own, however, the kind of help that they suggest - a Muggle Reality TV Show which focuses on helping struggling families - is not what either of them had in mind.

Trust - E - 4.8k Five times Sirius trusted Remus and one time he didn't.

An heir and a spare - Teen and up - 3k The new term has started and Regulus has to face his brother for the first time since Sirius left Grimmauld Place to stay with the Potters. Tragic Black brothers.

Nothing without you - M - 6.4k Sirius, he thinks again, the only word that seems to catch in his mind as he stares at the bed. It’s Sirius, there, body stretched out and eyes closed and black hair spilling over the pillow and blood. So much blood. He looks like he’s sleeping, only not, because Sirius doesn’t sleep like that, on his back, still and quiet.

Secrets in the Black of night - E - 6k It all starts when Remus is paired with Sirius fucking Black in Potions, but Remus didn’t think this was where they would end up. Sirius is in Slytherin, Remus is in Gryffindor. How different things could be.

Chase - E - 7k “For the last time, Padfoot, I’m not going to play hide-and-seek with you,” Remus exclaims, an exasperated sort of tone to his voice as he looks at his boyfriend. (Or shameless, plotless smut)

The wolf submits - E - 4.6k When the moon has been particularly cruel, when the wolf has been especially savage, when Padfoot and Prongs haven’t been enough to calm his thirst for the hunt, that’s when he wants this, needs this. When he comes to, racked with guilt and with the taste of blood in his mouth, that’s when he needs this.

Drarry

As The Tide Pulls - E - 24k People are always awed by how powerful Harry Potter is. Little do they know it comes with a price. When Harry steps through the doors to Draco Malfoy's shop Magical Mends they don't know that both their lives will change forever. Despite the history between them they manage to find something within each other and they start building a life together. Just as their life settles down, Harry starts to show symptoms that turn out to be more than just stress and a diagnosis reveals that there is something wrong with his magic.

Mixed

over blackened water - Regulus Black/James Potter - E - 14k Regulus knows it as clear as anything. He might be a Death Eater, might be one of the Dark Lord’s most trusted, but Regulus Black belongs only to one other man and that is James Potter.

Scent of Summer Snow - Sirius Black/Remus Lupin/James Potter - E - 15k Remus had spent seven years watching James Potter and Sirius Black. It was impossible not to the get drawn in by their magnetism, impossible not to watch them when they were together, impossible not to be affected by the way the whole world seemed to centre around them. It wasn't that he was jealous, exactly, but when he lay awake in bed listening to the two of them whisper, unaware that he was still awake, he couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like to be a part of that.

Little Lion - Sirius Black/James Potter, Sirius Black/Regulus Black, James Potter/Regulus Black, Sirius Black/James Potter/Regulus Black - E - 35k Sirius Black and James Potter are two sides of the same coin. The kaleidoscope was invented by Scottish physicist David Brewster in 1817.

Brewster was a professor of natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, and he was interested in the study of light. In 1816, he was experimenting with the reflection of light off of mirrors when he created the first kaleidoscope. The original kaleidoscope was made with two mirrors, but modern kaleidoscopes can have up to 12 mirrors.

Happy Birthday Bill Forsyth the Scottish film director and screenwriter.

Born in Glasgow July 29th 1946 and educated at Knightswood School. On leaving aged 17, he answered an advertisement for a “Lad required for film company” and spent the next eight years helping make short documentary films.

Leaving documentary production in 1977, Forsyth wrote the scripts for Gregory’s Girl and That Sinking Feeling in the hope of breaking into feature films.

Obtaining finance, however, proved frustrating and problematic. The BFI Production Board rejected Gregory’s Girl three times. Forsyth later said, “I remember one torment of a meeting when I tried to explain that Gregory’s Girl was really a structuralist comedy… I suspect my script was too conventional although nobody actually told me as much.”.

That Sinking Feeling was eventually made in 1979 with amateur actors from the Glasgow Youth Theatre, including John Gordon Sinclair (who later took the lead in Gregory’s Girl , its tiny £5,000 budget was raised from a variety of sources.

Forsyth’s distinctive voice as writer-director is already apparent in this tale of a robbery of stainless steel sinks by a gang of unemployed Glasgow teenagers - intensely humanistic and humorous yet with an underlying seriousness of purpose. This ability to create a self-contained yet believable world with a keen sense of the absurd and bizarre in the everyday is perhaps only rivalled by the work of British television writer Alan Plater. The film opened to great popular and critical success at the Edinburgh and London Film Festivals but was unable to secure more widespread distribution.

Gregory’s Girl was Forsyth’s breakthrough film. This acutely observed story of adolescence and first love set in a Scottish new town was rapturously received by both critics and public alike. Forsyth’s reputation seemed to be secured by the success of his next venture, Local Hero, a first collaboration with producer David Puttnam.

In 1999 he made Gregory’s Two Girls as a sequel to Gregory’s Girl, with John Gordon Sinclair playing the same character, but it received mixed reviews.

Gregory's Girl, to me, is still a very funny film, but it feels dated, that's not to say that it hasn't stood the test of time with some folk, indeed The Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) will show a 4k version of the 1980 cult classic on August 17th, which will be followed by a Q&A session with some of the cast including Gordon Sinclair(Gregory), Clare Grogan, tickets go on sale this Monday (31s) at 12 noon.

Last year the popular Scottish actor Peter Capaldi where he spoke of how Bill Forsyth saved him from living off pakora and lager after starring him in Scottish cult classic Local Hero. The Doctor Who and The Thick Of It star praised the Scots film director in an acceptance speech after receiving the Bafta Scotland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film & Television on Sunday.

I love Capaldi's affection for our country, speaking to the audience while holding his Bafta, Capaldi said the award was “for getting lucky, and for being lucky enough to be born in Scotland”.

He said: “Forty years ago I was just up here (in Glasgow) as an art student, living off pakora and lager for breakfast.

“Bill Forsyth scooped me up and put me in Local Hero.

“It was an act of kindness and confidence that baffled me and much of the industry to this day, but I wouldn’t be here without him and nor would a lot of others.”

Capaldi landed this breakthrough film role aged 24 playing Danny Oldsen, a naive young oil industry executive, in the film.
