Biblically-accurate angels are a sight to behold! I've always found that biblical myths and prophecies were a great source for fantasy inspiration. These symmetrical creatures, which are often composed of layered eyes and wings, come closer to emulating a psychedelic experience than they do to portraying a monster—but that's precisely what's so unnerving and brilliant about them. Things we naturally associate with bodies, such as digestive tracts, are all but absent from these celestials, causing one's mind to strain and scramble as it tries to make sense of what what it's seeing. Celestials, such as the Ophanim described here, are rarely featured at the game table, because they are good-aligned and higher level. But, if you have to deploy them, I recommend using this discordant imagery instead of the hairless and androgynous humanoid trope. Matthew Colville includes a few celestials that capture this style in Strongholds & Followers, especially the 'Dominion' (p. 155-166). What other religious ideas are good fodder for D&D? The nephilim, the tabernacle, the leviathan, or behemoth?
