Rip Curl could just have had three brand ambassadors, one for the men's line, one for the women's line and a trans person for a body inclusive line. But no they did the lazy thing and fired the woman and have a man wearing women's clothes.

An Australian brand that specializes in swimwear for surfers has come under fire after bringing on a trans-identified male as one of their “female” brand ambassadors. Rip Curl’s controversial move comes just months after the company dropped Bethany Hamilton, a shark attack victim, for voicing her opposition to trans-identified males competing in female sporting competitions.

Rip Curl cut ties with Hamilton in November 2023, despite her status as one of the most celebrated female surfers in Australia and abroad. The decision came after Hamilton publicly opposed gender ideology policies which permit males to compete against women.

Last February, Hamilton shared two videos to her Instagram account questioning October 2022 guidelines adopted by the World Surf League, in accordance with the International Surfing Association, which granted males who claim a transgender status permission to compete against female athletes.

“Is a hormone level an honest and accurate depiction that someone indeed is a male or female? Is it as simple as this?” she asked. In her follow up video, she questioned the policy again. “Am I just a hormone number? Is it as simple as that?”

In her reaction to the new guidelines, Hamilton had also threatened to boycott the World Surf League, and has been outspoken in support of fairness in women’s sports on social media since.

On January 24, Rip Curl posted a video on their women-focused Instagram page, Rip Curl Women, which featured Sasha Jane Lowerson, a trans-identified male surfer.

In the description of the video, Rip Curl described Lowerson, 44, as “a West Australian waterwoman who loves the freedom found in surfing, disconnecting from the mainstream, and the feeling of dancing on constantly changing waves.”

Seemingly anticipating a flood of negative responses, Rip Curl locked their Instagram comments in an effort to limit discussion on their new ambassador.

Lowerson competed successfully in men’s surfing competitions prior to identifying as a “woman.”

“With a commitment to maintaining a positive space for all, we have disabled our comments. Thank you for your understanding,” the sportswear company added.

Lowerson drew criticism in 2022 after taking first in both the Open Women’s Longboard and Open Women’s Logger events at the West Coast Suspensions state championships. Just three years prior to competing in the women’s category, Lowerson, competing under the name Ryan Egan, had taken a top position in the men’s category.

Lowerson had previously celebrated the updated guidelines by World Surf League in February 2023 which permits men to compete in women’s swimming competitions if they reduce their testosterone below a level known to be much higher than what women naturally produce on average.

In advance of the ruling, Lowerson had already been competing in women’s competitions. In March 2022, Lowerson placed ninth in the Noosa Festival of Surfing, becoming the first “trans woman” to compete in surfing at the professional level. Two months later, he placed first in the Open Women’s and Women’s Logger divisions at the Western Australian State Titles.

In an interview with THEM, a pro-trans publication, Lowerson said he began surfing many years ago but didn’t begin identifying as a woman until his 40s.

“I’ve been a professional longboard surfer for many years. And in that time, I hid in the closet basically. I tried to transition at 19 and again at 29. And now, in my early 40’s, I’ve been successful.”

Reacting to Lowerson being platformed by Rip Curl, many women online expressed anger that the brand would drop a disabled female surfer, only to then work with a male surfer who competes in female competitions.

Many women called for consumers to boycott the brand.

“Company @ripcurl hired a MAN to advertise their women’s line, rather than an amazing female athlete. Amazing. They hate women don’t they. Don’t buy anything from these people. #BoycottRipCurl,” one critic said on X.

“Imagine dropping an athlete that survived a shark attack and went onto be one of the best surfers in the world for a mentally ill Man competing in women’s surfing? Seriously Ripcurl? #BoycottRipCurl,” wrote another woman.

#BoycottRipCurl has been trending on X for the last two days as women continue to express their outrage.

Lowerson has made his Instagram account private following the backlash. However, Reduxx was able to obtain photos from the page showing Lowerson modeled sexually suggestive outfits with captions that related to his surfing career.

Since news of Lowerson’s partnership with Rip Curl first broke, female athletes have spoken out against the brand and in support of Hamilton.

Swimming Champion and activist for women’s sports Riley Gaines called out Rip Curl on X, encouraging her followers to boycott them.

In a follow-up post, Gaines stated: “Encouraging to see so many people reply that they’re throwing out their Rip Curl apparel and pledging not to buy from them again. I didn’t know people still wore Ripcurl anyways. RIP Rip Curl.”

Gaines has been outspoken against the inclusion of male athletes in female sports after she was forced to compete against Will “Lia” Thomas in the 200 freestyle final at the NCAA Women’s Championships in 2022. Gaines and Hamilton are expected to join forces to host a story hour for children on 2nd February in Springfield, Missouri to celebrate the launch of their new books, “Happy No Snakes Day” by Gaines and “Surfing Past Fear” by Hamilton. Trans activists are expected to protest the family event.

Skateboarder Taylor Silverman also chimed in to condem Rip Curl. Silverman has also been outspoken against males competing in female sports since voicing her own experience being displaced by males participating in women’s skateboarding.

Anyone else thinking that when this guy won his last event in a men's competition he saw a lot of younger competition and knew that his days surfing professionally was coming to an end unless he did something drastic?

"The 25- to 34-year-old age bracket is the largest, with 24 percent of the total surf population.

Surfing is dominated by youth – as 71 percent of the total surfing participants are in the 6- to 34-year-old age range.

In fact, 87 percent of all surfers are younger than 44 years old. "

A quick Google search confirms that "sasha" is 44.

Daisy Duck and Rosinha Maria Vaz dance a Latin dance - Louie Duck cries along with Tanya Mousekewitz and Princess Ariel - Tribute to Chita Rivera and Erika Robledo - Quack Pack and crossover voice tribute

Usually I don't publish drawings related to the death of famous and dear people, except for All Souls' Day, but I was partly affected by this news when I found out about it on Instagram, so I dedicated two drawings to famous people who died these days.

The first drawing shows Daisy Duck and Rosinha Maria Vaz dancing a Latin American dance modeled after the famous Broadway dancer, singer and actress, Chita Rivera. Chita Rivera was born in 1931 and is really famous for many things especially when she acted on Broadway. Unfortunately, she died yesterday, that is, on January 30, 2024. Many thanks for the great performances as well as learning how to dance, and Daisy and Rosinha in my headcanon are definitely big fans of her, and I used these versions as a fusion of Quack Pack with Ze Carioca Brazilian comics in my own way. Yes, considering that Daisy is Donald's girlfriend and Rosinha Vaz is Jose's girlfriend, and Donald and Jose have been together for a while, it wouldn't be bad to see the two of them together.

The second drawing shows a tribute to Latin American Spanish actress Erika Robledo who has voiced various characters in the Latin American Spanish dub, but especially Louie Duck from the Quack Pack, Princess Ariel from The Little Mermaid (mainly the Disney TV series) and Tanya Mousekewitz (in their dub Tanya Ratonovich) from the movie An American Tail and other characters. Yes, unfortunately she died last week at the age of 48. So I drew Louie from the Quack Pack, Tanya and Princess Ariel hugging each other and crying and grieving for being abandoned by the actress who played them. And to be honest, even though I haven't watched that many Latin American Spanish dub videos, at least as much as I have watched Quack Pack in Latin American Spanish dub she wasn't bad and she was great at her job. Many thanks for the great acting. Of course, other persons and people who died recently, may their souls rest in peace.

Rest in peace, Chita Rivera and Erika Robledo! Amen.

Feel free to like and reblog this, but don't use these ideas without mentioning me, thanks. However, it is sad when some loved ones leave early. May God grant them the Kingdom of Heaven! Amen.

I am pretty stoked for this Chapter 2 stuff. Between naked Jimin, Tae, Jungkook and Jin, tattoos, Tae jetting off with other pretty people and partying it up with wild people humping couches in Paris, and now Mr. Sunshine with this dark creepy thing goin’ on...I am on edge waiting for whatever Jimin unleashes on us.

Some Armys are shocked at what they are seeing at that after party in pictures and video when in my opinion they’re not that big of a deal. Save Tae’s virgin eyeballs! Send out the chastity brigade!

People think the members have lived this pure life all this time. Have y’all seen that full sleeve of tattoos that Jungkook has? And his piercings? That sort of thing is not something a pure as driven snow South Korean would sport.

Granted, the fandom is so diverse. Many people from many walks of life are BTS fans. What is mild to me may be extremely pornographic to someone else in another part of the world. Those who live a very sheltered life from all this vulgarity are probably in for more shocking things to come...so to speak.

I know many of you who read my blog think I am joking when I talk about the little hints of bondage fetish we see here and there between Jimin and Jungkook. I’m kinda not joking. Catch those eyebrow raises and those innuendos... “be honest you enjoyed it.” The first time I caught notice of that I had to rewind a few times to make sure I saw what I saw and heard what I heard. Jungkook had to stifle himself here....

However, one of the things that drew me to BTS to begin with was their wholesomeness. I loved that about them. It was so refreshing after seeing naked body after naked body and hearing lyrics about putting my dick in your mouth or my wet-ass pussy or whatever. I mean...where’s the anticipation and titillation if you’re just gonna go straight to the climax? There is no more shock value. WHERE’S THE FOREPLAY IN THAT?

So now, we’ve been told they want to show something more raw, more explicit, as Jimin has stated. Maybe he meant “more straightforward” and not “explicit” as we may interpret it in meaning a full frontal nudity kind of way but I’m game for straightforward too. I like explicit all different ways. This was kinda explicit:

I want the individual members to be able to express anything they want and to any extreme they want. We went from screaming and flailing on the ground when we caught a glimpse of a bare shoulder and now we are seeing bare chests, belly buttons and full naked backs and it’s great because these men are in the prime of their lives and if they want to, they should be able to flaunt everything they have while they have it in tip top shape.

Perhaps this is the game plan all along. BTS as a group is more wholesome and accessible to a broad audience. The individual members, maybe not so much. But they are in their mid to late twenties and two are about to cross over to thirty. GROWN ASS MEN.

When Pierre had first tried to get close to him, Lando had pushed back. He had been wary, kept all his defenses up high because he knew how this was going to go. Pierre was going to try get close to him and then either make a joke of Lando or leave him with more scars than his soul could bear. Lando hadn't always been so cynical, but time had thought him not to trust those that approached him. Too many of his relationships, platonic and romantic, had been built on lies. The other person using Lando's fame to get everything they could before betraying him. Lando would give them all his affection, attention and love, and they would take it for granted every single time. By the time Pierre came to him with his charm and jokes and flirty touches, Lando was done with love. He was done being used by everyone in his life. Except Pierre was different. There was something in the way Pierre didn't flinch under the weight of Lando's mistrust and instead pursued him softly. Something about how Pierre was able to handle Lando's biting words and see the hurting man underneath that made Lando soften. When Lando looked at Pierre's face, he felt nothing but love and peace. It was something that had terrified Lando when he had realized it. It had been a random Tuesday in an off week. Pierre wasn't doing anything special. He was scrolling through Instagram, laughing at some dumb meme and it had hit Lando right in the chest that this, this was what love was. He had never felt it from his other partners but this, the way Pierre and he simple existing as Pierre's hand curled around his ankle while he showed him a meme, was love. It was something no one had ever shown Lando, and he was paralysed by the weight of it. He had tried to say the words that night. His ear resting over Pierre's heart, their legs intertwined as Pierre drew little love hearts across his back with his finger tips. He had tried to tell Pierre that he would do anything for him, take every pain and every battle to protect Pierre from harm, but the words had gotten caught in his throat. "I know", Pierre had smiled, tipping Lando's head up so he could kiss him softly, "I love you too. This is special for me too" Lando hadn't expect his eyes to water or tears to fall but they did as he closed his eyes. Pierre pressing kisses to his cheeks and forehead and nose, whispering those three words over and over. Reassuring Lando that it was okay to not be able to say them yet when no one had ever taught him how to. "I run into every storm for you", Lando had managed to get out and the smile he had gotten in return told him everything he had needed to know. And that was enough to push the past aside and embrace the future he was building with Pierre.

Unfortunately, I haven’t put out much art this year. So I’m using my favourite sketch pages from this year instead of pieces. I’ve had a lot of struggles w/ my mental health and personal real-life problems, so doing full pieces seemed a daunting task. But hopefully in this new year, I’ll be able to do more full pieces!

This was a difficult time for me motivation-wise, and this was the only full page I made at that point, as most of my (now-lost) art was digital then! My favourite sketch here is the Grant Cohen in blue at the bottom.

2. January 2023

Another especially-difficult month for me. Again, the only full page I was able to fill, unfortunately. I really like the Norman in the top-left corner; he was so fun to draw!

My bestie (@harmonyblossom19 btw, hey girl) had said that MatPat gave off Fred ScoobyDoo vibes, so I drew their fusion—dubbing him “FredPat” shortly thereafter. It was the best of February’s doodles, though I’m still not proud of it. This was around the time I moved here from my old blog!

In the byler fandom theres a recurring problem of reposting art and its been getting worse and its been frustrating me for a while now (especially since im an artist in the fandom) so i decided to make a post about it lol

im aware that theres lots of new young st fans, or if anyone simply didnt know,, what is reposting?

- reposting is basically just taking another users creation (whether its a simple word post, art, fic ex.) and posting it to another site

So whats the problem with reposting?

- the problem is that most times, the thing that is being reposted is posted without proper credit, or reposted when the creator doesnt want it to be reposted

why is this a problem in the byler fandom?

- reposting has been a problem in the fandom since forever (like most fandoms) however theres been a much bigger rise due to tik tok and pinterest, and ive never seen THIS much reposting (especially for just one ship) in a fandom before

- theres been an increase in popularity in tiktoks with a caption similar to something like "byler fanarts to make your day better!!" and then tons of different art by different artists being reposted- ALL WITHOUT CREDIT, AND ART THAT ARTISTS HAVE EXPLICITLY STATED THAT THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE REPOSTED

- there are TONS of pinterest accounts deticated to just reposting art from tumblr or instagram onto there (almost always without credit and permission)

all of this is bad because itll just increase the chain effect of reposting

all those fanarts reposted onto pinterest? theyre gonna be reposted onto tiktok, which people will resave to repost to yet ANOTHER app

- recently ive been seeing 'putting byler art into AI videos on tiktok AND THIS IS THE WORST POSSIBLE THING YOU CAN DO,, this basically means you STOLE an artists art, REPOSTED it without permission or credit, and then put it into a system WITHOUT the artists permission, that will take their art and steal their artstyle and hardwork

-another problem is "rating byler fanart" slideshows ive seen on tiktok too,,, thats so rude and disrespectful to artists. dont take artists for granted, without fanart the fandom would be in shambles,, rating peoples art and making rude remarks isnt cool, especially when youre stealing from them in the first place

also ive been seeing ways that people are "crediting" artists and:

-no, just because there is a signature or watermark on the art doesnt mean you can repost it

-no, putting "credit to artists" in the description isnt proper credit

- no, just because you DO credit them properly mean you are allowed to repost the art in the first place

- no, saying "oh i just found it on safari i dont know who the artists are :((" isnt a good excuse, artists spend hours on their work you can at least spend five minutes looking up who drew it

So, how do you repost art correctly?

1. Check the artists bio/description, if it says something along the lines of "reposts allowed" then continue, if it says something like "ask for permission before reposting" that means going to the art you want to repost and asking them if its okay to repost and name the where you want to repost it to! if there is nothing in the bio about reposting DONT REPOST IT OR SIMPLY JUST ASK, never assume

2. if you have the artists permission to repost, then repost the image, and in the description (or anywhere else that is clearly visible to viewers) state the artist's username and the app you reposted it from (ex, art credits to @/artist on *app*)

and if that seems like too much work to go thru to repost someones art,, then simply dont repost at all. artists get the most credit and recognition by posting things themselves. them letting you repost their art? theyre doing YOU a favour. artists spend hours on their pieces, and YOU refusing to give them credit is rude and disrespectful, and just blantant art theft

and no, "if theyre putting it online, expect it to get stolen" isnt a good excuse either,,, people dont park their cars in parking lots and expect it to get stolen,, and the same should go for art too

TL;DR

-if you dont know who drew it or if you are allowed to repost it, DONT REPOST

-artists take hours drawing things that make YOUR fandom expierence better, dont take it for granted, take the time to credit properly

Meta says it will block news from Facebook, Instagram in Canada

TORONTO — Meta said Thursday that it plans to follow through with a threat to block Canadians from sharing news on its platforms, after the federal government passed a law requiring digital firms to pay domestic media organizations for their content.

“We have repeatedly shared that in order to comply with Bill C-18, passed today in Parliament, content from news outlets, including news publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available to people accessing our platforms in Canada,” the parent company of Facebook said in a statement.

The law, known as the Online News Act, is one part of a broad and contentious effort by the Canadian government to regulate the digital sphere and circumscribe the power of tech giants. Another law passed this year compelling streaming platforms such as Netflix to promote Canadian content to users in Canada also drew criticism.

It is also one of several similar proposals under consideration around the world that aim to sustain floundering news industries by requiring social media firms to negotiate compensation with media organizations for the content that is shared on their platforms.

Media organizations have long argued that Silicon Valley giants should share more of their revenue with them because the advertising dollars that had long sustained their businesses were decimated by the rise of the internet and firms such as Facebook and Google.

Facebook, Australia reach deal to restore news pages after shutdown

Canada modeled its law after an Australian one that passed in 2021. California is considering a similar proposal. Meta’s response is also familiar. It had previously threatened to block news if California’s bill passes and briefly blocked news in Australia after its law was passed, drawing a backlash. Facebook relented less than a week later, after the government tweaked the law to grant the platform more time to negotiate with publishers.

Both Facebook and Google now strike deals with Australian news outlets to use their content on their platforms.

Trudeau has defended Canada’s legislation and accused the tech giants of employing “bullying tactics.”

“The fact that these internet giants would rather cut off Canadians’ access to local news than pay their fair share is a real problem,” Trudeau said this month. “It’s not going to work.”

If anyone in the "Nancy Drew" fandom didn't see Shannon Kook posted today on Instagram about the show and that while he sadly wasn't able to film season 4 due to a scheduling conflict, he did attend the series wrap party and posted a video with pictures from the event with various cast members including Alex and Kennedy. Also he hashtagged it "The Hardy Boys" so I'm taking that as confirmation that we likely are going to finally get that said on screen that his Grant and Ace are the show's version of Frank and Joe Hardy like we've all suspected all along. :)
