The “LGBTQ+ is a social contagion” theory from cishet people is soooo funny to me like you’re telling me heterosexuality is SO ingrained and SO watertight and yet SO fragile that if your kid so much as picks up a fucking Steam Powered Giraffe album they’ll turn into raging queer? Do you HEAR yourselves?????

The only words a straight cis man could say to me that would make me feel anything apart from disgust.
"I can pay for that"
Otherwise STFU.

seeing feminist events and protests etc being ruined breaks my fucking heart :( like what do they think they're even accomplishing? even if they hate radfems there should be alternatives to just thrashing every feminist good deed radfems do for women in their often impoverished communities
if AT LEAST they had been working hard replacing it with their own trans-positive feminist version or whatever in the area that would've been one thing. but often they just destroy and just go aha! job well done, that'll teach those bitches. when women in those communities actually really truly need these things and all they do is ruin those resources for others and losing the movement activists that the movement badly needs. if they only knew that other activist movements that they respectfully bow down to ARE ALSO FULL OF WOMEN WHO HOLD RADFEM BELIEFS!!! and if every woman who thought that sex mattered, which is especially common with woc from outside the west or with family outside the west since they know first-hand how horrifyingly bad oppression can get for afab people, if they all had gotten called out cancelled banished from the spaces etc the movements would've failed before they even began and that would've led to SO MUCH more marginalized suffering!!!!
i truly believe that these kinds of extreme trans activists tend to be more on the privileged side outside of being afab, and use that activism as a way to prove they're not bigots like their white middle-class parents were nope they're radical and they fight the cistem and are cooler than those freaky bigoted genitals-obsessed gays and transsexuals... the same ones that fought hard for decades to earn them all the rights they currently enjoy and were oppressed on the basis of being same-sex attracted and are now being thrown out of pride events
it's also interesting with different cultures, bc for example with french instances of trans activists going batshit, the french world is much newer to the concept of gender identity than english folks, like there's SOOO many stolen english words that young french qweer activists are trying to awkwardly make a Thing in french spaces and they have the intense righteousness of trans english tumblr but the people around them are just like huh ????? bc the words and the concept of gender identity just aren't as widespread in french spaces, esp since our language is so sex-based. it makes them feel even more like martyrs and seeing the entire french world as bigoted. it makes for some wild shit in france like sex-based feminist events being trashed and cis feminists being assaulted and only english radfems hear of it and call it out, bc english trans activists don't care about news like these, it makes them all look bad and they assume it's all just elaborate fox news type shit or cis women are being dramatic again
i just think that the way trans activists are treating the feminism vs gender identity divide is really unproductive, surprisingly violent, very dangerous, and negatively impacts the afab women who need feminist events and protests etc the most. especially woc, disabled women, senior women, and other women w few resources. i'm seeing women being turned away from SHELTERS and other life-saving resources for using the words man/woman in a sex-based way or wanting only people with vaginas in trauma victim spaces for safety and healing reasons. would a homeless dude spouting the same language be turned away from a shelter or lead to activists rallying and protesting outside the shelter for daring to home him bc he's unsafe for transmasc people??? would a trans activist say nope we shouldn't give him a safe home we shouldn't give him a space in a shelter we should record him and post a video of him and shame him and laugh at him???? I REALLY DON'T THINK SO

music recs but its only poc artists:
raleigh ritchie- will never shut up about his music. one of my absolute favourite artists at the moment. definitely recommend it if you're into r&b/pop/sadboy music. do not know which album is my favourite but some songs i'd recommend first: bloodsport '15, aristocrats (especially the music video), say what you mean, never better
nahbo- extremely underrated. not actually sure what the genre is but google says its indie/hip-hop/rap. very dj, artsy, and psychedelic vibe. i think all their music, or at least most, is political songs. my favourite album is ruptured. and songs i'd recommend first: slow down, rocket, hashtag authentic, wrinkle
nina simone- was gonna do artists that aren't super popular but i just absolutely love nina simone, i had to include her. her songs stretch into a variety of genre, but it is mostly jazz/blues- she also mostly covers songs. not sure what my favourite album is. but some songs i'd recommend if you haven't heard them: angel of the morning, suzanne, the desperate ones, feeling good
the muslims- punk band. only recently started listening to them. fav album is probably fuck these fucking fascists. and some songs i'd recommend first: there, their, they're, john mccain's ghost sneaks into the white house and tea bags the president, gentrified chicken, fuck the cistem
d3vilishbri- they only have a few songs but they're absolute bangers. its rock/punk. some songs i'd recommend: alright (/w you will know ali), ur the worst! please let me take you out to dinner, immature
otoboke beaver- punk/rock band. most of their songs are in japanese. my favourite album is itekoma hits. some songs i'd recommend first: what do you mean you have to talk to me at this late date?, datsu . hikage no onna, suki suki darling, i don't want to die alone
lady parts- not a real band, it's a band from the tv series 'we are lady parts' (so so good! watch it if you can!) but the music is so good anyway. so some songs i'd recommend: bashir with the good beard, fish and chips, voldemort under my head scarf, cover of we are the champions

Memorial sketch for Nex Benedict, I’m so sorry kid, you deserved the world. Protect trans kids. FUCK THE CISTEM! (I apologize for putting “say their name”, that quote is to acknowledge hate crimes against black women and by putting that on art of someone who is not a black woman dulls down their efforts, I apologize for using that phrase.)

do you think it’s possible to experience some level of gender dysphoria without being nonbinary or trans? it’s weird but i always feel like i exist within the space between being a girl and nonbinary.
feel like there's a lot 2 unpack here but. short answer yeah long answer i don't think it's useful 2 thing of gender in terms of some strict divide between cis&trans as like. ontologically discrete categories of being so much as social labels that signify general groupings of experience & how an individual relates to & moves through the world. like the division between "cis" & "trans" is primarily useful, imo, for discussing broader systems of power at play & the forms of privilege different people might have access to, but a "cis" person's gender is just as socially constructed & contingent as a trans person's bc nobody is born w some internal physical kernel of gender identity that just magically manifests as they grow older (imo).
so w that in mind, if we're defining "gender dysphoria" here as any kind of discomfort w an assigned gender, then i don't see why people who would otherwise label themselves as "cis" couldn't experience some level of gender dysphoria. many cis people are uncomfortable w the various trappings of gender & navigate that discomfort in different ways--some might end up identifying as trans, some might identify as cis but gender non-conforming, some might just keep id'ing as cis...bc again, there is not like. this stark, inherent divide between trans & cis experiences; there can be overlap & crossover, etc. what an individual chooses to label themself really just comes down to how they personally end up navigating their gender, and there's no right or wrong way to go abt that. i guess the flipside of this question is that someone could say any amount of gender dysphoria means a person is trans (w trans here as a broad umbrella category signifying someone who doesn't fit neatly into their agab), which...i mean, sure, but again, i think plenty of people who would otherwise be considered "cis" aren't just magically embodying their agab either, so ig i don't really see the use in quibbling over who can or cannot experience gender dysphoria, or like...what "counts" as gender dysphoria. i think it makes more sense 2 just acknowledge that all gender is constructed & let each individual evaluate their own experiences in deciding how they wanna label themselves.
that being said, if ur asking this question bc ur agonizing over whether 2 label urself cis or nb bc u feel like u aren't like..."trans" enough. my advice is 2 just say who cares & use whatever label best fits ur experience. or just don't use a label at all! there isn't some standard or checklist u have 2 meet 2 label ur gender a certain way, y'know? and ur experience of gender might change throughout the course of ur life anyway, bc again, it's not like...a fixed kernel of truth u can unearth from ur psyche like buried treasure. also, u might find marquis bey's cistem failure a helpful read; they get into the weeds on this much better than i can in a single answer on tumblr.com lol

I am very glad a post I made about social contagion and Steam Powered Giraffe is finding its audience.
BUT.
Even though this was intended as a joke, I have thought about it since and did see some things in tags that made me want to clarify what I mean by “social contagion” versus what I called “the station” in my tags. Someone used “gateway drug,” which is also apropos. Because there is a very crucial difference between the two, I think, and I want to make sure nothing I said gets misconstrued by the wrong people.
When cishet people say being queer is due to social contagion, what they’re saying is that were it not for exposure to queerness, or deviance, in media or in public life, people would default to Straight. That’s why they’re working so hard to scrub queerness, or any hint of queerness, from the public sphere.
But the thing is, they wouldn’t be so afraid of queer exposure if cishetness was that ingrained, right? It’s not that people are being exposed to lgbtq+ people or content and suddenly becoming queer, they already were or it was through that exposure that they realized they were. Those are completely different things.
It’s like going through your life being told you only have to be options A or B. There’s no other options, you’re A or B. But then one day you see option C and you’re like “woah, nobody told me about C, that looks way more comfortable/authentic” or “woah, I’m totally C, why did nobody tell me about that? If I don’t have to try so hard to be A or B anymore, I won’t.”
The humor for me is just how, to me, blatantly obvious, like it is a verifiable, Googleable fact that gender, sex, and sexuality are complex and largely social constructs and that binary gender is a pretty recent Western phenomenon, and yet conservatives (and centrists, even some Dems I hate to say!) are acting like social media is creating queerness, and it’s like no, more people are just more likely to see option C, D, and Etc. these days.
And it’s the type of things they’re trying to ban. Like, if the cisheterosexual institution can’t hold its own against a short haircut, certain colors, people kissing, or, in the case of my post, 2-4 singing robot mimes, perhaps the institution was not that strong to begin with!!! That’s just how people found their option C, and that’s a good thing!! More of that!! That they can’t see how obvious this is, that’s what’s absurd to me.
The thing is, before social media, people found ways before. They found their stations in other people, people whose genders they felt more aligned with their own, in spiritual centering, in nature, in everything. They wrote secret notes, experimented in private, tried new clothes on, and gave each other secret names. Queer people, trans people, nonbinary people, everyone else, have always been here.
Even if they ban queer lit from every public school (I hope they don’t, and they most definitely shouldn’t, but this is a catastrophic example), we will continue to find our ways out of this sour little cage of cisheteronormativity. Whether they like it or not.

Do you ever just... not have time for gender? Like how am I supposed to have a gender today, I’m in the clothes I slept in and have either been working on homework or projects. I don’t see where I’d find the time.
