Are you familiar with the How to Train Your Dragon series? Since Fidget has a busted wing and Olivia's dad is a very skilled toy/robot maker he might be able to create a contraption for him to be able to fly. Fidget would let Olivia fly on his back.

Yes, I am! I'm really glad that you asked me this because I have wondered about it for a while now and even tried to incorporate a thing as such in a future design for him. I only had the idea of Dawson patching the wing for now as he is a surgeon and stuff, but I also really really love the contraption idea!!!

These designs for adult Olivia and Fidget are a little old though, I plan on changing Fidget's peg leg to a metallic one like the one he has in his Lorcana card.

And I also have an idea that these two become investigators like Basil and Dawson when they grow up, but I need to finish the concepts of their villains/rivals!! Which I hope it can be soon enough.

Also more context on this Au: this takes place years after the final (ik I said this already but shshs), where he had plenty of time to think somewhere inside what’s left of his mind, then one day he got freed by the one and only Cassidy✨ Magica was experimenting with magic portals to other worlds and wanted to get another magica involved to steal Scrooges dime, but something messed up causing Cassidy to appear and the portal to explode, causing Bradford to be free from her

so Cassidy is now lost with some vulture in a whole different universe with nothing except the stuff he has on him, fun! Oh and here’s something from somewhere else:

‘Cassidy has no idea who this funky looking bird man is, and after being trapped basically forever and having time to mull things over, he would want some sort of a second chance after he lost a lot, even if it’s a stranger from another world, actually that’s his best case scenario.’

I’m still surprised I thought this Au up at all with my somewhat limited knowledge of the 2017 show in general, I did eventually go looking through wikis to make sure things were not too out of place or out of character lol

Axl made sure to get over here early, Meegan letting him in with a bunch of balloons tied to his wrist and a pink Minnie Mouse birthday bag that he comes into Erin’s bedroom with. “Heeey, birthday girl.” Knocking hard to let his presence be known, “Wake up, you got gifts and a card to read and cake to eat for breakfast.” In the other bag he placed the small birthday cake from Canters in a purple bag that’s hanging off his other wrist. ‘Happy Birthday, Erin’ written in cursive pink on the top of it, flowers and Minnie Mouse heads decorated on the top. He sits down on her bed, kisses her cheek and ties the balloons to the headboard then puts the bags next to her, there’s an outfit she wanted, a huge set of Estee Lauder lip sticks and lip glosses from Macy’s because he figured girls really love makeup and it was a last minute idea, a sparkly bracelet and a stuffed Mickey and Minnie in the bag for her birthday. All of it from Macy’s and he spent almost every dollar he had to afford all of it, but it’s damn worth it. Smiling in anticipation, he sinks down on his side and wraps his arm around her to squish her in a hug. | this one is set in the 80s and that bracelet is inspired off the one she wears a lot and seen in the its so easy video🥰

erin’s just barely waking up, mostly unaware what day it is, when she hears the knock on her bedroom door. her eyes remain closed as she stretches her slender arms over her head and mumbles, ❝ mmm… come in. ❞ she assumes it must be her roommate, probably just got back home from a night of partying, eager to tell her all about the cute boys that she’d met and kissed and danced with. the door squeaks, and what a surprise it is when the sound that fills the air is not a girly giggle, but the voice that she loves so very much. she’s still burrowed under a pile of blankets, warm and soft, with rosy cheeks and tangled curls, but her sleepy features light up all at once and she finds herself beaming at the strawberry-haired man. pale blue eyes fluttering open, widening as she takes in all the gifts that he’s brought her. a soft gasp escapes her lips. ❝ aww, baby! ❞ she squeaks, sitting up against the pillows, a teddy bear digging into her back. she rubs her eyes as if in disbelief. she wasn’t really expecting anything, knowing that they’re on a budget, but… wow! the balloons are beautiful, floating above her head and she marvels at them with sheer wonderment. curling her curious finger around one of the string, she pulls gently to bring one of them down before releasing it again. ❝ my goodness, is all this for me? you didn’t have to. you really didn’t have to, ❞ she whispers softly, peeking into the bags and spotting the most thoughtful combination of presents. it has her heart expanding, eyes filling with tears of happiness. he must really pay attention to what she likes, the stores she visits, he even got her favorite shades of lipsticks right. she’s smiling so big that her cheeks begin to hurt, the tip of her nose tingling. the first thing that she pulls out are the stuffed mickey and minnie. she hugs them to her chest and, before unpacking the rest, looks up at her boyfriend, nothing but love and gratitude brimming in her eyes. ❝ you’re the sweetest boy in the entire universe, axl. this is the best birthday ever! i love it, all of it… the balloons, the presents, you. i love you so much, baby! thank you. thank you for making my day so special. ❞ she curls her arms around his neck and hugs him, mickey and minnie squished between their bodies. this is the best birthday ever all because she gets to celebrate it with her favorite person.

The world is unfair and cruel. It is a lesson Aichi Sendou has known all to well. His entire life he’s been bullied for petty reasons like his shyness, his good grades, or just because someone didn’t like his face. He can still feel the bruises on his skin, even if a good many of them have healed and no longer show physical marks. Though, what always remained were the emotional scars. They were ones, that sadly, probably won’t ever heal. How could they when they ran so deep?

Well, at least that’s what one would say if he hadn’t met...him again. The one person who made him feel happy, the one person who was kind and generous to him despite being a total stranger, had finally returned into his life for the first time in ages. He doesn’t know how the Cardfighter found him. All he remembers was feeling an intense pain all throughout his body, consuming his entire being until it slowly lifted as he awoke inside the safety of a sealed off and well-guarded room inside the Tatsunagi building he now laid in.

It had no windows. It had no doors. It had nothing but a bed, a table, chairs, an attached bathroom, and a small kitchenette. It was completely sealed off from the outside world, the cruel world that always had it out for him. He doesn’t mind this arrangement, however. In fact, he felt...secure inside this isolated place, this sanctuary from the harsh reality of what took place outside it’s walls that had no one who could hurt him, since the only other person who could enter this space was the only person left he could trust: Toshiki Kai.

After all, he had no other friends. His sister and mother, while he still loved them, he realized through Kai’s words that they had done little to help him, to protect him. They encouraged him to go out into the world, forced him to go to school where would just get bullied over and over. They just made things worse, as did everyone else in this cruel world other than the green-eyed teen who Aichi solely had been relying on to take care of him since he was found.

He lays down on the bed, the one Kai had offered to him, simply staring up at the ceiling. The room was quiet and peaceful, two things that Aichi Sendou had never really known truly until he had been rescued. If he had been presented the choice, he’d choose to never leave Kai’s side and remain here in this safe haven forever.

After all, why would he want to leave the side of the person who he admired the most? The person who was the strongest? The person who promised he’d always protect him in order to return to that cruel outside world?

The person who he had deep feelings for ever since their eyes locked that day...

Sadly, his peaceful rest is interrupted as he feels a sharp pain in his forehead, one that causes him to scream out in agony. Dulled cerulean hues shut rapidly, but they do little to stop the pain and what came with it. Aichi’s mind was then flooded with images, images of people he doesn’t recognize. They are all shouting his name, all calling out to him, but they are then transformed into shadowy figures who then start to laugh earlier as they came closer.

His body moves to hit the back of bedframe, his screaming not ceasing for a moment. The sounds of these nightmare hallucinations and his thudding heartbeat fill his ears, Aichi then moving to place his hands over them. It almost feels as if his body is being torn apart, like when those bullies would constantly punch and kick him. That would certainly explain the red aura around his body that seemed to flicker to a blue color, like two sides clashing for control.

Little did he know that this pain was coming from a good source, one trying to save him from the darkness that clouded his heart, mind, and spirit...

“Kai! Kai, please help!” He calls out to the other despite Kai not being in the room at this moment, but Aichi knows he’ll come. Kai has always come to his aid when he was in trouble. He did when he needed the strength to keep living, and when he was found alone and cold the other day.

He’ll save him from this pain, this nightmare, from the friends monsters haunting his eyes, and he’ll be safe again. He has faith in the promise the other made. It is what he is sure of more than anything.

So though he won't turn down the offer to share its contents, he's going to offer fair warning to the princess.

"Just doodles, ma'am, nothin' like what you do. They just help me remember, is all. Or pass the time," he chuckles. "Gets real boring waiting on boats and trains all the time, doesn't it? So I like to consider it just a step above people-watching."

Meet the Artist: @erindrawsstuff

Hi, I’m Erin, and I draw stuff! I’m an illustrator and 2D animator based in Austin, Texas (yee-haw). I’ve been in and out of the animation/entertainment industry for about 3 years, working many different roles like character designer for Rooster Teeth, animator for The Daytripper (a Texas-based PBS special), and character and prop designer for Lowbrow Studios (Adam Ruins Everything, etc.). Most of my work is now in personal projects like my webcomic “SUBSIX” (I promise I’m coming back to it!) and working with friends and colleagues within indie spaces, all while working my day job and returning to school for a degree in 3D animation! Most of my inspiration can likely be traced back to my cringe anime roots and the more obscure 2D animated movies from Disney while looking to new inspirations like Into the Spider-verse and Delicious in Dungeon. I think my main goal has been to create compelling stories with enticing characters while trying to navigate the complexities of life and the people in it (both in the media I create and irl). In the meantime, I explore this through reading works like The Locked Tomb, listening to Philosophy Tube, playing disaster lesbians in our DnD campaign of nearly 4 years, playing video games that make me cry and question things, and challenging myself to grow and improve in all aspects. I hope someday I’m able to return to being a full-time artist, but for now, I’m rediscovering why I create and how to maintain a reasonable work/life balance. I’m truly grateful that people enjoy my work, regardless of how big or small my following is or becomes in the future. I hope one day I’m able to be an inspiration to someone as many have for me! Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself!

These folks watched a whole ass movie not realizing the main character was transgender and it was a 2 second kiss between men that made them lose their ever-loving minds.

It's amazing to me that if it weren't for those 2 seconds, many of these folks would have given this movie a 4 or 5 star review. But two seconds of the most vanilla, non-sexy, yet genuine and loving kiss somehow ruined every moment of enjoyment the previous 90 minutes brought them.

Imagine if they realized the trans allegory. I wish I had a way to tell them. I wish I had a way to make them realize they related to a trans character. That they rooted for them. That they accidentally empathized with a trans story.

This was a beautiful movie. In every sense. I really hope between this and Spider-Verse, we can have a moratorium on every 3D animated movie using this style of character design.

It's time to let go of the rubber toy look.

I love Toy Story, but its success kind of doomed 3D animation to never take any risks. I thought maybe it was just a limitation of the medium, and perhaps it was for a time... but after seeing Love Death + Robots and Arcane...

I realized they can make 3D animation look however the hell they want now.

The rubber people were just risk avoidance.

"That's what people are used to and so we're sticking with it."

But the real beauty of Nimona was the story. I won't spoil it but the plot is pretty much, "If you get to know a trans person, you probably won't hate them anymore."

Not knowing any trans people is one of the biggest factors in anti-trans bigotry. And so this movie uses allegory to let an audience get to know a trans person. And you get to experience someone slowly start to understand what it is to be trans from an outside perspective.

It's sad that will probably be lost on those folks above because all they will remember is the kiss. Seriously, it was such a harmless, mundane, blink-and-you-miss-it kiss. But I'm hoping that others will take the lesson of this movie to heart. That you should get to know people before you judge them.

Part of me does wish we could tell trans stories without allegory. That we could just have overt trans characters. But I think this is the best representation possible right now.

It's crazy that Supergirl was one of the bravest shows as far as modern trans representation. It wasn't an edgy HBO drama trying to push boundaries. It was a family-friendly superhero show and they were just like, "Here is a transgender woman with superpowers and it's fine." And I loved that it was part of the character but it wasn't all the character was. Though I think they just missed the manufactured "moral panic" window where that choice would have been extremely controversial causing boycotts of Warner Bros. and whatnot.

My only complaint about Nimona was a small penis joke. It went by very quickly and many may even miss it. But I was surprised to see it in this movie in particular. Especially since those jokes can have collateral damage toward trans folks. With all of the positive messages, wasting a joke on body shaming was a tad disappointing. I mean, it was a fairly lighthearted "Is it cold in here?" joke. I don't want to make it sound worse than it was. But it still registered on my Richter scale of things that bother me.

Anyway, I wholeheartedly give Nimona a 5 out of 5. It helped me understand my friends on a deeper level and it was warm and funny and entertaining. There was a scene at the end that was so beautiful and heart-wrenching and I was crying my eyes out. The animation and the symbolism and the acting were just so perfect.

It's a shame Disney tried to kill this movie. But I am so glad it was allowed to exist despite that.

OK, but hear me out

Say Ride the Cyclone were to be adapted into a film; imagine how much fun it would be to see it animated.

Because for the main plot, like the intro song and the mostly dialogue scenes in limbo, you could easily do a stylistic, but still grounded in realism style that a lot of modern animated projects are doing right now (think Arcane or Into the Spider Verse). But once each of the kids go into their respective songs/fantasies for what their life could have been? What if those were done in completely different styles?? Imagine the additional, visual storytelling that would tell about who they are as characters?

Like say, for Ocean's number, WTWN, everything became more simplified, and the characters (especially Ocean herself) turned into a more rounded, chibi-like style to enhance just how cutesy and likeable she's trying to portray herself throughout that number.

Or for Noel's Lament, everything goes black and white, and the characters become even more 2D stylized, and the film scales down to a smaller millimeter frame, more reminiscent of cartoons from the early 20's, when animation was just starting out, to enhance his idealization of "the olden days" (as Ocean puts it).

Mischa's song, This Song is Awesome could be animated with a more choppy frame rate, and the character designs turn a little more jagged around the edges, kind of like animated music videos (I'm thinking a Gorillaz band vibe). But as he transitions into singing about Talia, the colors start to bleed out over their lineart, and become more paint-like and Talia herself moves like a rotoscoped character (think Loving, Vincent that came out a few years ago) to enhance the sense that she's somewhere between a real person and a fantasy Mischa's built in his mind.

Ricky's song would, of course, be stylized after those sci-fi cartoons from the 90's, like X-Men or Captain Planet.

For the Ballad of Jane Doe, I would love to see something like what Wolfwalkers did back in 2020, where most of the characters (in this case, the other kids) are for the most part, animated like traditional, 2D characters with very clean lines and neat movements, whereas Jane herself stands out for having messier, sketchy line art, and looks more and more unfinished in her animation as the song goes on, because she can feel more and more of her own identity being lost.

Constance's Sugar Cloud I could see done in the classic 2D Disney style (i.e., the Renaissance era of Disney, like the Lion King or Little Mermaid days) because not only is it really smooth and colorful and just all around nice to look at, but it reminds the average moviegoer of their childhood growing up with those movies (among others, obviously), which ties in nicely with Constance's preceding monologue about remembering her own life, and the good that came with the bad.

I'm even tempted to envision the first half of the finale song in a different style, when the stage production would show a quick projection of Jane/Penny's life after she returned to the world of the living. Imagine watching this animated film, and for that segment alone, it becomes that really hyper-realistic, almost uncanny valley CGI animation style, to show that she really has joined the world of the living, i.e. our world, among us, the living breathing movie goers watching this, and watching the other kids still in limbo fade back to that main art style for the final number.

I don't know; it just feels like something that would be so engaging to see from an already compelling storyline and characters. Especially with more experimental animation projects on the rise right now

Idk if you’ve answered this or not but what are Penny, Wayne and Maples interest/special interest? Like was Penny into the 90’s/2000’s boy bands? Was Wayne into trains or dinosaurs or something real niche like garbage trucks and was I’m assuming Maple was born in the late 90’s was she into Hannah Montana or even metal music that you and Eddie cater to until they just decided one day it wasn’t cool anymore and moved on 😅

I want to thank you. Because you just reminded (I had to consult my timeline for this verse to answer it) that Penny was born in the late 80s, so she got to endure the late 90s and y2k as a teen. She would have been the same age as Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff when they feuded omg!!!! And with a famous dad?? She can interact with y2k royalty!

ANYWAYS, to answer your question, YES! She was a big fan girl of the Backstreet Boys as a preteen! Was begging her parents to go to concerts all the time, learned the choreography, she was obsessed and, as delusional as 10-13 year olds get over boy bands, she was proud of it. And DREAM. She’d love that girl band so much. As a teen, she loves most of the bands of the 2000s like Fall Out Boy, Green Day (they reached the height of their fame that really elevated them in the 2000s—thats not up for debate), Sum41, Evanescene, Linkin Park, Good Charlotte, Pussycat Dolls and she’s a fan of singers like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, etc. She doesn’t really like the pick-mes of the 2000s. Sorry, Avril.

Wayne didn’t have any real niche interests dinosaurs or trucks. By the time he could develop niche interests, Goosebumps was a thing, so i imagine him going the mystery/horror route. And because of watching and reading Goosebumps, he develops an interest in weirdly specific things just as the main characters of the show do. To make it short—whatever he watches he makes his whole personality for a good couple of months.

And you’re right about Maple being born in the late 90s! She was 100% a delusional fan girl too, LOVED The Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana (but she loved Miley Cyrus more), fucking radio Disney, Jesse McCartney—oh my god, she was born around the same time as me so she’s going to go through so many horrible fashion and fan phases. The shrug, the skinny scarf, the weird layering of dresses over jeans. One Direction. God, Eddie has to endure a lot with her but if his babies are into something, then he encourages their enthusiasm, helps them indulge in it by buying them CDs and merch, goes to concerts with them—he’s a good fucking dad. Even if the two of you get whiplash with how often they switch up their interests. And lucky for you and Eddie, she’s a Beyoncé stan, so she exposes him to fantastic music just as he introduces her to the music he grew up liking in the 80s.

Stray Gods vs Change, Part 2

Why does Stray Gods keep mentioning family?

That was a genuine question, I'm not sure what the answer is. This post is going to be my thoughts and I'd really appreciate some discussion in response because again, I'm not quite sure.

SPOILERS BELOW

So, to say that Stray Gods mentions family dynamics several times is an understatement. Persephone, Orpheus, Hermes, the whole deal with the Idols list goes on. And there is a distinct repetition that comes up. Most of these dynamics are dysfunctional.

The Idol family is the obvious one. The myths of the Greek Gods can be summarised by one main quote from Disney's Hercules, of all films.

Essentially, the Greek Deities are one massive family tree. It doesn't have the healthiest of dynamics (to put it mildly), but they coexist. In Stray Gods, there is a notable absence of Hera and Zeus, the two parent figures of the Olympians. Dameter is also deceased, and her direct daughter is one of the main characters. As a result, the Idols feel directionless, there is no closure there. On a similar note, Apollo's sister is missing as well. Essentially, they feel like a shattered family.

Athena has become the mother figure, although she's not good at it. She's a sister trying to be a parent and you can tell by her demeanor. She's overcompensating and antagonistic and a lot of elder siblings in real life who have been through similar experiences show similar characteristics.

On a different note, Persephone has killed Hades, for understandable reasons. It's a horrifically abusive relationship that ended in bloodshed.

Similarly, Hermes makes a passing reference that i noticed when asked how they knew the old Hermes.

This keeps coming up.

But then we get three relationships I thought were interesting. Grace and Freddie, Asterion and Hecate, and Aphrodite and Eros.

Grace and Freddie are close. Historians will say they were the best of friends. Even if you don't romance Freddie, the two are family. Best friends who live together, etc. If you do romance Freddie, you get an Orpheus plot to bring her back to life, literally meeting the previous Orpheus as you go. But where Orpheus failed his quest because of a lack of trust, you can succeed, or not, I'm not gonna tell you how to save Freddie.

Then we have Asterion and Hecate. First of all, I didn't consent to have my freestyling singing capability so perfectly replicated by my sweet minotaur boy, and Summerfall will be hearing from my lawyers. On a serious note, this relationship is so wholesome and I love it, if you make it work in the story. They are proof that there can be a healthy relationship in this weird world.

Finally, we come to my favourite moment of the entire musical. I've already gone into detail on the Ritual as a song in a different post, so go check that one out (I crave validation from the internet people). But the challenge here is can you soothe this broken family here? Can this work? If you choose the green path, Eros gives a fantastic verse.

"Mother, I've stood by your side, now I no longer see, the purpose of love, when it tears at the centre of me. My arrows are rusty, forget the bow, and I won't be begging you not to go. But when you're away, you leave us a broken home..."

My arrows are rusty, forget the bow. Is a phenomenal metaphor for a loss of purpose, but I would like to focus on the last two lines. When you're away, you leave us a broken home, and you leave me alone. The characters here are aware they are falling apart and they are desperate to try and reconnect, and if you play your cards right, you can help. You don't "fix their relationship", you just give it a nudge. You don't repair the scars in this family, but you convince them to talk to each other.

That, my friends, is a microcosm of the entire plot of the story. Can you fix this broken family? No. But you can get them to talk to each other and convince them to try.

The story goes out of its way to say that some relationships cannot be salvaged. Some families are too far separated for that, but in this situation, you can give people who are hurting a nudge towards peace.

So, why does this musical keep bringing up family? And what does that have to do with the title of this post?

Well, because it is a story about change, and how to move on into a different world. Grace quits college before the story begins and doesn't know what to do, and the Idols have no idea how to navigate the new world.

The theme that the story presents (in my most humble of opinions) is this: "for things to get better, you have to be willing to change." You have to step out of your comfort zone to find the love of your life. You need to change direction and start running together instead of away to find peace with your family. And, you have to take the lessons you have learned and become someone more mature, not necessarily someone different, but someone who is capable of adapting to a wild world.
