no of fence to jon snow fans who for some reason care about his exact age, but these discussions just annoy me no end. not only bc there's no way any weirwood flashbacks bran has to rhaegar/lyanna will come with time/datestamps, but also bc there's always comments like this:

SEVERAL turns of the moon (ie, months)?! have these people never seen a human baby before or just have no concept of their ages? even if we take into account travel time from the toj to wf, meaning jon was not a newborn too fresh out the oven when catelyn and robb arrived, there's still a difference between a newborn and a 3mo and an even bigger difference between those infants and an older baby 5-7mo. there's very good reasons these lines were cut. whatever birthdates can be worked out internally for jon and robb from when they're first mentioned as 15 and 16 don't matter in the end, bc grrm doesn't care about a consistent timeline and the actual text of catelyn's pov and ned's convo with robert about cheating on her should outweigh any guesstimates about jon's official nameday wrt robb's. catelyn may not have cared for jon, but she would sure as hell have noticed his nameday if it came before robb's and made him ned's firstborn. if jon's birthday canonically came before robb's then either ned's cover story would not involve adultery (not impossible for him to sire a bastard before his wedding), or he'd just give jon a new nameday along with his new name to fit the adultery lie. it makes no sense for him to lie about one and not the other, undermining the big lie with a little public clue of his story not adding up. whatever else she was as a stepmother, cat wasn't stupid and a bastard who was actually the eldest son being raised alongside her trueborn heir could be an even bigger insult than whether he was born of adultery or not.

BUT, the unknowability of jon's true birthday is not the only reason this annoys me, it's bc this is all based on the assumption that jon must be older since rhaegar/lyanna ran off together before ned married cat, as if both boys must have been conceived asap as robb canonically was when his parents consummated their marriage. and that's not how human reproduction works! even if you don't understand how fast babies grow in the first year, you should know that people who get pregnant do so through ovulation cycles and a lucky sperm finding an egg and all that, not just immediately getting knocked up as soon as one has p-in-v sex for the first time. not unless you only know mean girls sex ed where if you have sex you will get pregnant and die. (even tho lyanna did die, there's plenty of canon examples where pregnancy did not lead straight to death. also examples of people who did not get pregnant right away and even some who are/were sexually active and childless without always having moon tea on hand.) we can't know how long lyanna was having sex before that sperm+egg match happened or even how long she was with rhaegar before losing her technical virginity. if they were married, doesn't it make sense to think they didn't consummate their relationship until the wedding night either? that's the only leverage there is to ensure a status as wife rather than just mistress.

and while i just said grrm doesn't care about exact timelines and a lot is still foggy surrounding the rebellion and esp rhaegar, there is one timemarker wrt robert's rebellion he voluntarily threw in, time and time again: that stannis was besieged at storm's end for almost a whole year. that siege, which mind you, did not match the duration of the entire war. it only started after robert won his battles at gulltown and summerhall, returned to storm's end, and then went out and lost the battle of ashford, leaving his homeland open to the reachermen. the same siege which only ended when ned made a detour there after the sack of king's landing, before going to the toj. even if lyanna may not have given birth that exact day ned found her, she could only be waiting in that bloody bed for weeks at the most, not months. so if rhaegar knocked her up the very same night he carried her off and jon was still a newborn when ned found her after the siege of storm's end had ended, wouldn't that mean lyanna was pregnant for well over a year? that's not how human pregnancy works either! so, maybe that's proof that jon and robb, whichever order they were actually born in, were actually very close in age as babies, much closer than if they were both conceived asap.

and really, jon's actual birthdate does not matter imho, when he was raised not just as the bastard to robb's trueborn heir, but with robb also known by catelyn and the world as ned's firstborn (which he was, in any case, as jon was ned's nephew by birth). what difference could a birthdate before robb's make (even were there some means of discovery) after ned, cat, and robb are all dead? if one is looking only at his birth parents then he's only a firstborn child on lyanna's side, but definitely a second son on rhaegar's side. maybe he was always meant to be a second son with a not much older half-brother! even if the aegon fka young griff is not in fact rhaegar's son, he'll still be known as aegon vi targaryen, meaning jon will never be known as any father's elder son. if i may reference mean girls again, it's not going to happen.

FALLING LETTERS ANIMATION tutorial

hello! @kimmomi asked for a tutorial on how i made the letters "fall" in this gifset and so i figured i would make it and post here! this effect isn't hard to achieve but it might get a little tedious if you have a lot of letters.

note: you will need photoshop with a timeline!

STEP ONE: create your base gif! be mindful of number of frames in your gif. the number of frames doesn't really matter here, altho the longer the gif the better the effect. i'd say try to limit it to 60-70 frames, depending on how big your final gif will be.

STEP TWO: make your text the way you want it to look. this effect is basically the last step of your gif making process. (i will be using the typography from my set as an example as i already have that psd saved)

this is what my typography looks like now.

STEP THREE: i would recommend that the word at the bottom be the word that "falls". for me that is forever.

now, you will have to duplicate the "forever" layer and make your non-copy forever invisible.

what you will want to do now is delete all the letters but the first one in the duplicated layer. for me that is f. then you just duplicate the f layer and write your second letter instead of it, in my case o. you will have to do this for all letters. also as you do that make sure to move them a bit away from each other.

now, what helps to align those letters where they start off, is making your non-copy layer to be visible again.

after you've aligned your letters, make the non-copy layer invisible again.

STEP FOUR: so now we come to a bit of a tedious part.

what you will do now is move the playhead (blue timeline arrow) a bit further from the beginning of the gif (this allows for the text to stay still a bit before it starts "falling") and click on the first letter.

next step is to click on the little arrow next to your letter and clicking on the stopwatch next to Transform.

then, you will take the playhead and drag it to the end of the gif where you will start with transforming your letter with Free Transform tool (shortcut ctrl+T on windows). and what you will do is, while in Free Transform mode, drag your letter to the bottom of your gif while also rotating it a bit. when you're happy with your placement of the letter, hit enter. see below gif for how i did it.

you will have to do this for every letter, but make sure to rotate some in the other direction. also make sure that the beginning of the stopwatch mark is the same for every letter.

and that is basically it! after you transform every letter, you can go and save your gif.

this is my final result:

for some extra dramatic look, you can duplicate your initial layer with the whole word on it, drag it above all layers, clear layer style and add a stroke and make sure its FIll is at 0% where you will get the outline text that stays behind.

In The Closet (At Rink-O-Mania)

Mike Wheeler + Subtextual Queercoding 🏳️‍🌈 an @emblazons 1K free space gifset for @ice-sculptures

just because its visual & can be hard to discern, here are the "queer coding" aspects I chose, in order:

Mike stares at Wills mouth several times over the course of S3-S4 especially—the movie theater in S3 is another one that I didn't get to include, but that is as dramatic as the three I did manage to put here lmao. He also looks at boys like Eddie (and maybe even the boy behind Angela) with extreme interest, which was a gif I made but that didn't make the primary set.

Closet Imagery follows this boy around like a shadow, and has since Season 1. Bonus points for Mike being in the phone booth in The Nina Project, because...the closet is glass. 😂

Mike wanting girls out of "mens/boys only" spaces happens so many times its laughable. Hilariously, he also gets kicked out of the girls bathroom (the same way he kicks girls out of boys spaces) in Rink o Mania come Season 4.

The worlds most coded "you can admit you're gay to me" conversation happens between Karen and Mike in season 1, right after he puts El in his closet. ☠️ Bonus points for how Will must be affecting him is mentioned right before that happens.

Mike is disgusted / displeased with women several times over the course of the show. Not included in the gif: When Nancy asks Mike if he likes Eleven as they're preparing to make El a bath in S1; when Mike gets upset at the rest of the party for wanting to talk to Max despite not knowing her in MADMAX; him being mortified of lingerie along with Will in The Mall Rats in S3, when he looks confused/disgusted when Lucas tries to explain heterosexual romance to him throughout S3, and the way he takes El's hands off of him both while making out with her in Suzie, Do You Copy and when she greets him at the airport in Vecna's Curse. He also never kisses El for the rest of S4 after their greeting/walk at the airport + misses Angela hitting on him at Rink-O-Mania entirely, which you can make of what you will.

I was wondering how you did the shattered glass effect in the first gif? in particular how you made the black and white gifs appear distorted within the glass if that makes sense? thank you!!!

ahhh thank you so much renee! literally what is time lol, this gifset is still one of my faves that i made. the shattered glass effect is mostly just a lot of layer masks to be honest hahaha. i'm so glad i still have the psd, so here's how i did it under the cut~

(this tutorial assumes you know how to put multiple gifs in the same canvas and are familiar with layer groups and masks)

I. PREPARATION

first things first, create an empty canvas of your desired size. mine was 540x540 px.

then, you need to find a cracked glass texture. if i remember correctly i simply googled something like "broken glass png", "cracked glass png", because i wanted something already transparent.

(a texture that's something like black lines over a white background definitely works too, you'll just have to put that layer's blending mode to darken or multiply.)

here's the png i used (and a download link for best quality):

and after positioning it into my canvas.

II. CREATING MAIN SECTIONS FOR GIFS

so basically when i did is i sectioned parts of the texture for each gif that i wanted to put. following the texture's lines, i zoomed in and carefuly drew a first shape along the lines with the polygon tool. you can also put a color fill layer behind the cracked glass layer so it's easier to see, like i did.

once you have your shape selected, click on the folder icon (1), then on the layer mask icon (2). it should give you a nice masked group to put gifs in hehe

then i repeated the process until i had all of my desired shapes. i've put some color layers so it's easier to see, but here are my 6 main shapes and how my layer groups look like so far:

III. GIFFING TIME

after screencaping and making all 6 gifs required for each section, you need to put all of them in the same canvas. i simply put one smart object gif layer in each group created earlier. then, i resized and rotated each gif to fit its group (by hitting ctrl + T while selecting the gif layer), as you can see with the gif labeled 6x02 in the layers preview. for the coloring, i went simple with black and white for most of them.

once i have all six gifs sharpened, colored, and placed in each shape group, the gif looks like this. the broken glass texture does most of the work to be honest:

obviously the center gif doesn't have any kind of effect, it's just colored as usual, so i'm not gonna go over it. it's just one gif layer in a masked group.

IV. SUBSECTIONS FOR DISRTORTED EFFECT

okay so for the distorted effect it's even more layer masks! basically i created more smaller sections within each main shapes already, still following the cracked glass texture's lines with the polygon tool and put them in individual masked groups like i did in the second step. here's how i ended up dividing each main sections:

yep, each color here is a different masked group, for example the 2nd and 3rd shape sections:

for each main shape section, you want to duplicate your gif layer the same amount of times as you have subsections within that shape. so if the main shape has 5 smaller subsections, i want 5 layers of that same gif. just make sure to not change its duration or position yet, and make sure the coloring layers/group stays on top of the groups in its shape section. then, simply put one gif layer duplicate in each group. example of my layers for the second shape so far:

then just repeat this until all subsections have its own gif layer.

V. DISTORTED EFFECT

this is the best part! and it's really easy. basically you want to slightly move each subsection by a few pixels, so they're in a slightly different position than the ones next to it.

to do so, select one of the gif layers and with the arrows on your keyboard, move it left or right, and even up or down if it looks good. i do this for all duplicated gif layers, making sure it looks like they're all slightly offset. focus on the cracked glass overlay's lines while nudging the gif layers, it's easy to see how the shapes break when you move them. for example here:

this is really just all trial and error, you just need to move each subsection gif layer by a few pixels with the keyboard arrows until it looks good to you.

here's my result once i've done this for all (23!!) subsections:

VI. FINAL TOUCHES

i don't think i did much else to this before typography besides adding a bit of contrast overall and a thin drop shadow to the cracked layer texture on top of everything. if you have a transparent png this definitely helps to give a bit more dimension to the effect. so here's the final result:

What is UraIchi Week?

It’s a week-long fanworks event to promote the Urahara Kisuke x Kurosaki Ichigo ship. There’s no sign-up, it’s just for fun, and everybody can participate. Completed works and wips are both acceptable, and any type of fanwork (fanfic, fanart, gifsets, etc.) is welcome. NSFW and/or potentially trigger-y content is allowed, although please remember to tag your works properly.

The ship itself can be written romantically or platonically so long as it stars these two characters together in some way. Poly ships are also fine so long as Ichigo and Kisuke are still the focus of the fanwork. And crossovers and fusions are also allowed even if it isn’t one of the given prompts for the event. Basically, anything goes, and the only criteria is that it has to be UraIchi-centric.

For those of you with Tumblr, you can tag your stuff with #UraIchi Week 2023 in the first five tags of your post. I’ll be tracking that tag so I’ll see it and reblog it to this blog. (If it’s been a few days since you posted and I still haven’t reblogged it, something probably went wrong, Tumblr’s not always reliable, so just shoot me an ask about it and I’ll reblog it.)

For those of you with AO3, I will create a collection a day or two before the event starts, and you’ll be able to add your work to the collection when you post. (I’ll toss up a notice for everyone once the collection is up.)

At this point, the UraIchi Server has definitely gotten a lot bigger than just UraIchi, but we do still have channels dedicated to UraIchi events.

~ Themes

The votes are in and tallied so here are the results that everyone’s been waiting for! It’s your choice whether or not you want to make a fanwork that includes all the themes of that day, or a fanwork for each theme, or a fanwork for just one. You can make something for each day of the week or just one or two days. And if your fanwork doesn’t fit any of the themes, there’s a Creator’s Choice option on the last day so feel free to bring your own ideas to this event. All prompts can be interpreted any way you want as well, it’s entirely up to you, any extra bits I’ve added is just to help get those inspiration bunnies hopping.

An extra note about the sentence prompts: feel free to change the tenses and pronouns as it suits you. If you’re inspired by a sentence prompt, then of course you should include it in your fic (as opposed to the quote prompts which are just inspiration in a general-theme-of-your-work sort of way), but if you need to change the tense from present to past, or if you’re doing a genderbend fic and need to change the pronoun, that’s perfectly fine.

when aye asks akk to be his boyfriend, akk says they should sleep. But afterwards aye jumps on him. What do you think happens then? Did they make out a bit? Did akk immediately throw aye off the bed (we know he is capable of that), did they cuddle and talk a bit? Tell us your thought please, we need more of your thoughts.

Plsssss, the concept of Aye immediately being judo-thrown over Akk and onto the floor, landing in exactly the same spot is fucking hysterical. This was never in my head, but now it consumes me.

I have a couple other asks I'm meant to be answering first, damn it, but you sent me this two hours ago and I haven't been able to think about anything else since. You are a plague. A beautiful, perfect plague. I love you so much.

Ahem.

I do think it was probably relatively innocent, whatever happened, considering it's almost canon that their first time - whether it was The First Time or merely Akk first-hand discovering the wonders of blowjobs, who's to say - was at Akk's parent's house, and Akk's not shown as especially bold about putting his hands on Aye before then - not gently, anyway. (This has a potential to tangent, but: Akk does a lot of grabbing Aye by his hoody in the first two episodes alone, and I know because of a mystery pair of gifsets I have half-completed, that he does a fair amount of shoving Aye around later on. But to my memory even when they hug or kiss, Akk typically waits for Aye's hands to find him first, unless it's after The Morning After).

Anyway.

I can't get the idea of Ayan being thrown out of bed out of my head, by the way. It's hard to be serious.

My favourite thing about the entire scene is Akk's helpless smile. The close-ups are wonderful, the แฟน is gorgeous and the little kiss is sublime, but it's the helpless smile after he's turned away that jumps out at me and steals my wallet at knife-point every damn time.

Truthfully, I think they probably just went to sleep. Ayan jumped on him because he's spiritually incapable of not climbing his beanstalk boyfriend even when he's lying down, even when that beanstalk has only officially been his boyfriend for ten seconds, but I imagine it just evolved into what's fast becoming a signature koala (there's a Khao-koala pun in there and I need everyone just to acknowledge I'm being strong as fuck by not making it) cling and Akk complaining that it's too warm but not really doing anything about it because he's flustered and disbelieving and giddy all at once. He's literally fantasised about this. In exactly this bed. Right in front of this bed's salad.

I also imagine it takes Akk a whole lot longer to get to sleep, despite his words. We already know Akk's kept company by his waking delusions when Ayan's in his bed.

I'd assume that those delusions get so much worse-better when Ayan's clinging to him knowingly, having just kissed him and called him his boyfriend in the softest, warmest voice known to man.

Anyway. All this to say, non: you're a genius, and I am now fully convinced Aye was catapulted into the bathroom. It's the funniest possible outcome.

i started making gifs in march this year, so january/february are off the table for this. it's funny that it hasn't even been a full year yet. it seems both somehow a lot longer and also like i remain some kind of photoshop baby at the same time. the images in this post will remain undescribed until i have some energy in my failing body, unfortunately

march: midnight museum invades all 2 of my braincells. i download photoshop. the end is nigh

While I will not be covering this episode in full (I do have some gifsets from it, though), I do wish to ramble a bit about Kendall and Katie, because they've got some great moments together in it.

So. Shows that portray close and healthy sibling dynamics. Makes me insane, right? Right. Siblings who love and look out for each other. When each one manages to be The Protector of the other in some way, regardless of age difference. Brilliant stuff.

And for a show that so often relies on absurdity and just plain off-the-walls humor, it manages to have depth as well, if you're looking for it. Which I am. Why else would I have created this blog but to analyze this delightful series?

Kendall and Katie may possibly be one of my favorite fictional siblings. From the very first episode, there's such a strongly established bond that you can sense even though they really don't interact that much. You see it in the way that Kendall immediately (happily) complies with Katie's request to hear the "Giant Turd" song and when Katie is going on about how often Kendall sings—including when she can't sleep at night.

I won't go into all my thoughts and feelings on the Knight family situation and how a lot of who Kendall is was likely forced upon him when he became "man of the house," but...those thoughts are there. Might explore them at a later date in another post or in a fic, but anyway! As you make your way through the first season, their relationship solidifies more, and you see the warmth. The way that they look out for each other, and the fierceness with which they love each other. Katie is an independent, tough cookie, but she's still a little kid who sees her big brother as a role model and needs his guidance. And Kendall, being the guy who always tries to be there for others and set a good example, does a wonderful job of looking after her while also knowing when to step back. In a lot of ways, he's a combination of brother, father-figure, and friend, which I have OTHER thoughts about (because that is a lot of weight to carry around at 16).

Focusing in on "Big Time Break" though, Kendall's storyline deals with him still wanting to get to know and befriend Jo, even though she has a boyfriend. At one point, Katie overhears Jo on the phone and discovers that Jo doesn't have a boyfriend at all; she's been pretending to have one for fear of romantic pursuits interfering with her career. Perfectly understandable to want to prioritize in life, of course, but Katie is not happy to hear of the deception.

Jo has been LYING to her dear big brother?? Now, she could just sit back and not get involved. After all, Kendall and Jo are older and have their own confusing, teenage lives. It'd be okay if she wanted to shrug and let them figure it out themselves. It doesn't have to be her business.

But Katie Knight can't do that. She goes right over and pulls Kendall from his conversation in a way so very fitting of her character.

This is another aspect of their dynamic that I really like: Katie's complete lack of fear to take charge when needed. Kendall isn't listening to her? She just rolls her eyes and drags him by his ear. Katie Knight, expert on gettin' things done.

She then lets Kendall know that he's been getting played "like a fiddle." Not wanting Jo to be suspicious of their conversation, she cleverly advises Kendall to turn and give Jo the "my little sister is crazy gesture," to which I must include another gif because I love Kendall's execution. He's got the best expressions.

They end the conversation with Katie essentially challenging Kendall to do the right thing, which, in her mind, is to confront Jo and get the truth out of her.

And I love this for two reasons. 1. Katie's vaguely threatening reminder that she looks up to him and 2. They have an adorable handshake! When did they come up with this?? It's so sweet, and I love them.

Lol, so much for a "mini post," but oh well. Kendall and Katie are wonderful siblings, and it delights me. I'm glad they didn't go the route of them being the type of siblings who are always bickering with each other or who ignore each other/generally just don't care. Give me siblings who love each other, who get invested in each other's lives, and who have silly little secret handshakes.

okay re: the recent ask u did, do u ever just think about how melissa never accepts a favor w/o somehow "repaying" the person ("i'm gonna have to bake a ziti" for the rugs, using blackmail to get favors, etc.) but when it comes to doing stuff for other ppl she never asks for anything in return (giving the rugs to the abbott staff, janine cooking lessons, etc.) and seems surprised when ppl do nice things for her out of sheer goodwill rather than a) as an apology for something they did to her or b) as part of a greater transaction? bc um i do

there's something about this that's so magical to me, and it's because most characters of this ilk often function with a set of expectations and clear cut boundaries. the 'you'll catch me back later' system. but melissa doesn't operate off of those standards. if someone she cares about needs something, she'll get it for them; not because she needs anything in return, but because she takes pride, i think, in being able to provide for them.

that's not an easy cross to bear; it wears on her. it's already beginning to wear on her as we've seen this season with her class size. she's wrapped up in being able to always handle things herself.

but even when she doesn't accept the help herself, she turns around and gives it to others—even when she doesn't have anything left. she can't stop herself (see this gifset from @royalarmyofoz from 2x04)

you can see her trying to hold herself back here—just for a split second—as if unable to let janine walk away from their interaction without in some way being made better for it. this is a recurring theme in the series so far: the books she purchased with her own money were ruined; she in turn helped janine realize her value. jacob called her a "southern philly type", misrepresenting her identity & history; she helped him open his mind.

now. none of this is to say that melissa is a pushover. when barbara said the thing about playing in the mud, melissa took back the rug she'd given to her in 1x01.

but...it was never about the rug. it was about barbara seeing her—knowing her better than anyone—and still somehow getting her wrong. the greatest offense was being misunderstood.

when melissa gives her heart, she gives it not as a gift, but as a privilege. she can easily take it away. her greatest asset, for better or worse, is that even when she stands to lose everything, she still gives these parts of herself so easily (much easier than she often makes it seem).

against her better judgement, melissa allows others to hold onto her—to benefit from her—because through doing so she is needed, wanted, seen. the payback she hopes for does not come as a favor or a gift; it comes from seeing the positive result of her actions. of not needing anyone else. and, maybe more than that, it comes with the knowledge that when people need someone to call, they'll call her.

okay so in honor of pride month, i have something i wanna get off my chest for real. sorry if this is super long

I have a tendency to go outside of tumblr spaces when looking at glee content — something i frequently regret. but in my time in those spaces, i often the most delusional take ever. it is basically, “kurt was always kinda pushy towards finn. so did he actually DESERVE to be called a slur??? 🤔🤔🤔 let’s discuss.” this shit boils my blood to no end and while it’s obvious why, i feel the incessant need to defend my boy kurt at all costs.

for one, he wasn’t any more pushy than any other character in the show. i mean for god’s sake, rachel quite literally THREW herself at finn as early as the first episode and i guess that’s fine??? what kurt did was virtually no different bc all the characters do weird, out of pocket shit throughout the show. it really only bothered finn bc kurt is a boy and finn is OVERLY bothered by the prospect of a boy having a crush on him. (more specifically that its kurt — he just simply dislikes kurt being attracted potentially straight guys. thats why he took so much issue to kurt singing with sam. it’s always been about his personal issues with kurt)

moving on to the actual scene in question, so much of what flop accused kurt of was grossly unfair to him. like he says something along the lines of “im scared to even take a shower when youre around,” implying that kurt is some ‘predatory gay’. which is ironic, bc we learn from kurt himself that he never showered after gym JUST to avoid be labelled as something like that. at no point did kurt’s advances move towards remotely ANYTHING sexual in nature, finn just instead assumed that of him

finally, i do believe that flop WANTED to call kurt a slur. he knew that kurt wouldnt call him out for it and you can tell from his tone that that had been building up inside of him for awhile. he wanted something that would push kurt away/scare him. he just went for the cruelest method possible in the moment.

so all this was to basically say that flop hudson sucks and that kurt did not deserve any of the shit that he endured. he was pretty much taught by his peers that it is inappropriate and unacceptable for him to have the same wants and desires that literally any teenager would have simply bc he was gay.

lmao yesterday i saw a gifset where cory as finn was doing some good fun acting and i stared at him for like a minute going "if i focus on the cory of it all, can i trick myself into liking finn even a little bit?"

and then wanna act all :O four eps later when kurt is like "im getting tf out of here to go to school with people who are nice to me" aslkfdslfjsd

i did Not just see somebody say they’ll remove their own gifset that they spent time and effort on if somebody else had made one of that scene before, like what the fuck has this site done to people? Your fan works have as much right to exist as everybody else’s, Especially in the game of making gifsets of scenes where we all know there will end up being multiples of things! Nobody has a corner on the gif making game and the speediest and luckiest person is not Owed the notes that you’ll get by posting a different set of the same scene.

while this sentiment isn’t New new, this is extreme.

(Back in the day (so a long time ago in tumblr years) i remember somebody getting bitchy abt me making a set of the same scene they’d giffed like i was trying to sabotage their note count when no actually it’s just the topaz colouring on the gifs was butt ugly, like every other gifset with that colouring during that deeply unfortunate gif trend, and i thought they sucked and didn’t want to reblog them so i made my own. And i never said anything abt it bc Yikes why start that confrontation, but i have no idea whether that would have made it better or worse for them l o l)

but still. That’s even more of a reason to have multiples. You have no idea how many people want the scene giffed in a way they actually think is pretty.

I had even more fun doing this set because I finally found a way to make his skin color on my coloring not too yellowish. Like I don't want his skin color to be closer to his hair color and make it look one dimensional (if that makes sense XD). I really suck at yellow and green colorings so I always try not to deviate too much from the original. But I am really proud of the result for this set if I do say so myself. Hehe.

And that Margarette set!! OMG!! Thank you so much for noticing!! It wasn't that obvious but I am glad someone aware that they are nonbinary noticed what I did. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

Hello, and welcome to this year’s Marwan Simposium Event: Year of Marwan 2023!

This event will span the entire year until December 31st, 2023.

This event is run on a monthly basis. Each month has a list of different prompts, so there’s plenty to chose from! In its essence, it works the same as a prompt week. That means that you can create something for a prompt that you like, and the posting deadline will fall at the end of each prompt’s specific month.

Rules

For your work to count for this event, at least one protagonist needs to be a character of Marwan’s. This can be from any of his work. Canon pairings or Kenzarelli are both welcome, but not mandatory!

The prompt chosen for the work needs to be posted in the corresponding month of that prompt. For example: a work based on a January prompt needs to be posted by January 31st. Prompts can be combined with other months, but only the prompt of the month you post it in is the one that counts. Posting multiple works with the same prompts is allowed, as is posting multiple works with different prompts in the same month!

Requirements

ART: any medium of art is welcomed and encouraged: digital, traditional, gifsets, collages, video edits, textile arts etc. AI art is not allowed.

FIC: there’s no minimum nor maximum for the wordcount. The only requirement is that each work is original, and not a chapter in an ongoing series. Recording a podfic for this event is welcomed.

We ask that the work you create for this event not be cross-submitted for a different event, unless it’s an event hosted by the Marwan Simposium Discord.

SORRY im crashign emma's vibe but this has been ON MY MIND since i made my aesthetics, because I very very deliberately picked quotes from the most Relevant TM Jane Austen books SO without further ado:

MAXELLA: Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot -- I literally went to Lins when I was drafting up Drizella's bio and told her we should do Persuasion vibes, but I wasn't going to do Drizella. READER, I WAS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In retrospect, I can't believe I decided to pull a plot from my favorite Jane Austen book and thought I would not do it.

Anyway, I said this in a gifset I reblogged, but I've been approaching Drizella here in an attempt to reclaim the HORRIBLE Netlix Persuasion, which made Anne a sort of #girlboss. It did NOT work for Persuasion, as the story was, but I thought about how it might make sense for Drizella. Anne breaks the fourth wall in a very Fleabag way and that would be perfect for a spinster who was laughing at society and critiquing it instead of one who had been pushed around by her elders.

WOLFING: Elinor Dashwood and Edward Ferrars -- yes most of this is just bc I massively associate Ting with Elinor, but it is also because of the P I N I N G and the R E P R E S S I O N and the THINKING THEY CANNOT ACT ON THESE FEELINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TOO!!!!!!!!!!!! They have a sense of Duty and responsibility which keeps them from expressing their feelings :'')

MADDNEY: Henry Tilney and Catherine Morland -- this one appeared to me during their promenade walk, because Maddy is that starry-eyed country girl who wants a good story out of this and John is like love that energy, but also i know more about the world, but also you're kinda making me soft about that. I mean, there's obviously our own B-Plots here, but just for the pure surface vibes its great

DAYLILY: Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner -- sorry this doesnt count but jane austen didnt do scandalous class differences but i couldnt leave them out

i have a hypothesis that the introduction of the “reply” function to tumblr significantly contributed to the loss of ask culture. tags as whisper conversation set a tone (a often useful one! but one that maybe leans in an “anti-cringe” kind of direction) and then replies capitalized on that instinct to not loudly contribute to conversations. like, if you didn’t want to reblog someone’s post with commentary (personal post that felt weird putting on your own blog, anonymity, whatever), then you could follow up with an ask ((as currently demonstrated)). now a lot of that conversation is happening in the closed loop of the reply function - not private, but certainly not a public discussion.

are there structural changes that you think tumblr would need for conversational culture to make a bigger comeback (either generally or for yourself)? (i’m thinking also of the closed door nature of discord servers and other ways fandom might be getting more insular, but that’s a sidebar.)

YEAH you know what i agree with this. and like, there used to be no way to reply to replies lol so you would screencap it and then make a new post which, while onerous, did have the effect of continuing that conversation in public. which also therefore made not just the conversation accessible to followers but also the fact that u as the blogger were available for conversation clear.

i do think the sort of extra layer of distance and the visibility of interaction allows people to be like, oh this blogger responds in this way to people who approach them, so if i approach them in a similar manner, i know what kind of response i am likely to get. rather than worrying about like, how do i as an individual worry about how to get this individual person to interact with me, personally. the stakes are much lower! the relationship building has more of a chance to go through digital layers of smalltalk.

honestly idk that i am very good at Solutions so much as Pontificating about this kind of stuff, but i do think it requires approaching from the angle of understanding that the nature of community requires both give and take, and fandom as an ecosystem can't survive on content creators throwing material out to silent masses anymore than silent masses are going to feel fulfilled or connected to people who aren't making things for them to engage with.

i also think there is a siloing of like, consumers in one section and creators in another and never the twain shall meet, which is kind of anathema to how i have participated in fandom. i do think that participation in fandom requires some kind of active behaviour, even if it's just reblogging and tagging fic or a fanart, or sharing your opinions on a show. like it doesn't have to be Making Content, but it does need to involve Making Connections, even if that connection is just being a weird teenager who finds a blog they like and backreads through that person's content and now they're an expert on swimming rpf and ffvii even though they have never engaged in competitive swimming or played ffvii (look.)

but like so much of my fandom behaviour was modelled on watching other people be friends via sharing their thoughts and creativity with each other, and i have only ever made friends online with other people who reached out to me on that level - not just people who liked the same stuff as me, or people who admired from a distance, but people who engaged with the things i was making, and who made things - art, fic, meta, funny opinions, gifsets, interesting questions! - that i wanted to engage with. and i really do think the mechanics of tumblr allow for that range and depth of creative interaction in ways that a lot of social media doesn't, or can't, and maybe the key is just. trying to make use of that more? modelling the behaviour i want to see in the world? who knows

also god i cannot imagine anything worse than joining a fandom discord. discord is for me to have a dozen servers of 3-6 people each, some of whom have 1-2 of the same people in them in different configurations, so i can meticulously choose the perfect configuration of group chat to drop a link to a funny picture or article i found into. you could not catch me in a group bigger than like, 8, i'd fucking die
