I'm very good with dialogue! I'm able to write dialogue in a way that actually sounds like how people talk, and specifically how the characters talk. Dialogue is also my favorite, which is why I considered screenwriting for a while!

How about more original work? I've got a mlm baseball romance (not a rewrite of Waiting for Spring) that I'm really excited about. Years, ago, I wrote a screenplay for a baseball romance and I'm taking a lot of bits from that for this book

Describe your comfort zone—a typical you-fic.

...I have never given thought to this before. 8|a But let's face it, I am firmly in the hurt/comfort bracket, with plenty of hurt, no damsels if I can manage it (sorry Leo all your bones were broken before I got to you!) and badassery with a side of humour, followed by plenty of comfort. This is the sort of thing I really enjoy writing, but I also want to make sure every fic I write is different. So some fics won't fit this mold at all, but you'll definitely get elements of it on the way through. ♥

7. Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

FLYNNE COMING AT ME WITH THE HARD STUFF UHHH--

okay, so. In most fics I write there's parts that I'm proud of. So the most recent one-- that I look at and go "shit, I actually pulled that off"-- would be in Chapter 14 of NRFTW when Donnie gets hijacked thoroughly by the Technodrome and is trying very hard to sever himself away from the horror that is more or less being turned into a pile of bloody spaghetti--he forgets himself. Tiny spark inside his own mind just noping out, until Raph forces his way in and goes no. (This is long and I can't get the Read More to work, so I apologise):

“--Looks like we have a 317-39.4 in progress.  Oh, come on.  Has nobody read Donnie's big book of bad guy codes?  Nobody?”

There is too much of this chapter to include as a snippet, so this is a smaller part-- both Donnie's descent into semi-madness and depersonalisation and his mangled thought processes that are overlaid with the Technodrome's to the point you can't separate one from the other that happens just before this piece, where Raph slams his way into what's left of Donnie's mind space and gives him the anchor he desperately needs, and the prose shifts from abstract to a little more formed to Donnie being an it to being a he to being Donnie and then finally them holding a conversation in normal formatting. This whole section? Was not in my original outline for NRFTW. Donnie's attempt to find a cure was gonna be largely offscreen and I thought, nah. That's boring. That's anti-climactic. And then one day I pinged my beta and said "So hey what if I did this" and she screamed at me and we had a winner.

Me: Well, this sure is some weird shit I've never tried to write in my life Me: I have no idea how to do this Me: I'LL WING IT

And the whole thing about writing is: even if you think you probably can't do it, you can still approach it with the philosophy of fake it until you make it and then you might find, actually, that you can. And so this was a section I got to the end of and went "Shit. I did that." And I was so nervous about it, but it turned out brilliantly, and so I now I go back and I look at it and went "Fuck yes, I did that," so I'm proud of it.

17. Do you write your story from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?

Start to finish! The only time I haven't done this is with my original stuff, in which I've bounced around a few times in order to get the worldbuilding correct in a place before I actually go there. I find start to finish is good because that way I can easily change direction as I go, or seed things in to have them bear fruit later in an organic kind of way, and half the time I subconsciously add little side bits that I realise later I can totally do something awesome with, etc etc. Sometimes I write stories that start halfway through the story and then we have chapters/flashbacks of "and here's how we got there" but that's still start to finish, just the chronology of the story itself jumps around. This works for me. Other ways work for other people!

My stuffed dalmatian, who is named (ever-so-creatively) Spotsie. He is very well-loved and I keep telling myself I'm gonna give him to one of my nieces so he's not just left in a box, but I haven't managed it yet. 😅

With a ton of milk and generally vanilla syrup; I'm very much a 'wants the caffeine, doesn't like the taste' kind of coffee drinker.

What's your total AO3 word count?

What fandoms do you write for?

Mostly TMNT and Undertale, with solitary forays into Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Transformers Prime.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

A Shield Against the Dark - Part one of the Undertale odyssey that started out as trying to work out a couple of things before getting the story I actually wanted to write. Which has yet to be written.

Adventures in Human Sitting - Undertale shenanigans exploring what happens when a human is raised by a bunch of well-meaning monsters who don't quite know what they're doing.

The Monster Files - What happens when human authorities attempt to investigate these strange new monstrous arrivals in the overworld by hacking into the Monster Embassy computer networks, with predictably unpredictable (and occasionally pasta-filled) results.

Hushabye - Undertale fluff between Frisk and Sans, originally written as an exercise to hammer out the weird tonal push and pull of their platonic soulmate thing.

To Heir is Human - More Undertale fluff (yeah there's a theme) in which Asgore and Toriel have to deal with their incredibly complex feelings when Frisk falls ill (featuring Sans's reaction as well by request).

I'm honestly really surprised there's no TMNT on this, actually.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. Unless it's something that's un-respond-able, I do try to respond to everything. When my brain breaks I tend to avoid the inbox out of guilt, but I do get there eventually. Even if it takes a few years.

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

That Which Is Not Done, for sure. It's the prequel story about the parents of the four turtle kids from the Children of the Forest TMNT AU I started writing with @nicollini, and since the turtles are orphans being raised by Splinter, the ending was already written for me, and I think I cried more writing this one than any other. It's far enough removed from the source material that it could read as a standalone, and there's still hope to be found in it, but it's definitely a tougher read than most of my fluff.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't think I can pick. Most of what I write tends to end on a high note (if it ends at all -- my brain rewiring itself to deal with stress and paving over the writing parts kind of put a lot on indefinite hiatus). If I have to pick, probably Little Gifts because it's also full of holiday fluff.

Do you get hate on fics?

Generally no, and not on AO3. There was one several-hundred-word hit piece on That Other Site about how my story was trash and so was I, and if I'm being honest, it's a big part of why my cross-posting to that site kind of fell off a bit.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not really. I tend to do fade-to-black if anything, because I tend to write what interests me, and my little ace heart is just way more interested in platonic soulmates than anything else. There is a ridiculous amount of platonic cuddling though.

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Generally no, with the very notable exception of the TMNT/Pacific Rim crossover series. I had also intended the big Undertale story to be a crossover with another property, but I'm not actually sure if I want to go that route any more. Time will tell (I hope).

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't actually know. I think someone reposted Falling without permission once.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not to my knowledge.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not to completion (not for lack of trying -- brains are fickle), but there are a lot of collaborations and pieces of fics that started out as co-written stories and/or roleplays and/or art that were repurposed (with permission) into stories on the TMNT side of things.

What's your all-time favorite ship?

It takes a lot for me to actually ship something, but notable ones are Shepard/Garrus, John Crichton/Aeryn Sun, and I got a huge kick out of Luz and Amity on Owl House.

What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I'm not going to answer this one because I don't want to curse anything. I really do hope to tie off all the loose ends eventually. That said, the one that's a massive mashup of ALL THE TMNT AUS AT ONCE will probably stay at one chapter, just because it's so dang hard to write.

What are your writing strengths?

Before the brain break, probably dialogue, largely because it would just happen in my head and I'd frantically write to keep up. I like to think exploring relationships that don't get that much focus in canon is also something I'm pretty good at, but I may just think that because it takes up so much space in my head.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Finishing things. Curse of the ADHD brain even before the break.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Only if necessary for the mechanics of the story, and then I try to find someone who actually speaks the language to help (and now that I'm older and wiser, hire).

First fandom you wrote for?

TMNT 2012. There had been countless stories in my head since I was a wee Fantasia, but that was the first one that wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it down. There were just so many spaces between canon scenes that made me want to see what fit in there, and since they weren't getting explored in the show, I ended up writing Falling, and that led me to everything else.

Favorite fic you've ever written?

I can't choose. It depends on my mood. Whichever one is the one I need most to read at the time (which also happens to be my rationale for writing order).

Since I got tagged by the lovely @counterwiddershins and it's a great way to procrastinate from actually writing until dinner, here's a (VERY) shortened list of my WIPs - only the most recent ones, ie. things I wrote during the last year. Due to the fandoms I find myself (lovingly) drowning in these days I fully expect crickets, but here we go!

Somebody to Lean On - something for the Critten genfic bingo card, a look at Grog and how he "doesn't get sick" (except when he does) through three different periods and characters [Critical Role - Vox Machina campaign]

a yet-untitled one-shot, tentatively titled "beach day" - a few years after the end, the remainder of Vox Machina takes a little beach holiday. Grog experiences a sunny day off, potentially facing another loss mere years after [redacted, VM spoilers], and jellyfish. [Critical Role - Vox Machina campaign]

Underture - pre-canon, Vax and Scanlan, separated from the rest of Vox Machina, find themselves having to find the surface again after a long fall into the dark of a mithral mine. Meanwhile/three days earlier, Vox Machina are hired by a miner's sister, afraid something might have happened to him, to look into his disappearance. [The Legend of Vox Machina]

yet untitled Ghosts!AU Vox Machina fic - newly-weds Allura and Kima come into possession of a manor that used to be a keep a few centuries ago. Bad news: it's heavily in need of repairs and rumours are it's haunted. Worse news: the ghosts were pretty used to having the house for themselves and aren't keen on visitors/more housemates. Good news - or bad news, depending: after an accident, Kima realises she can actually see and hear the ghosts, and everything changes. [Critical Role - Vox Machina campaign]

You mentioned FF is really sad, which I don't disagree with per se, (the fact that presumably April/Casey's grandchild(ren) die relatively young is something), but its still on the happier side of a TMNT future. idk just wanted you to elaborate on what you thought was sad/what btts has to do with it.

I honestly can't remember where I mentioned that but yeah. FF is really only sad if you take a closer look at it and really think about it

Like on one hand the turtles and their dad are able to freely walk the streets and enjoy amenities they've never had access to before. They're relatively safe (if the universe would just stop tossing trouble at them) and they know that the world is a safe and happy place where they have living family.

But there's something deeply sad to me about being totally displaced in time. Everyone they love and care about is dead and long gone. They're immediately slapped in the face with being complete outliers, again, and immediately after meeting Cody they realize that their one living adoptive relative is in a bad situation where he's being manipulated by the only blood family he has left. The universe doesn't really pull its punches, even under the mask of a relatively lighthearted romp like a future adventure

Plus we have the whole thing with the Dark Turtles. "Here are beings who are like you, who are you in a twisted way, but their only purpose is to kill you. They have never known love, they have never known safety, they have never known trust, a kind word, a gentle touch. You are unique in the universe, and they are unique in the universe, and they were made with the sole, cruel purpose of trying to kill you." That's just so tragic to me, it makes me so sad if I think about it too much

And then the second season of FF was largely scrapped and turned into BTTS and the Dark turtles are abandoned, their fate left a mystery outside of brief scraps of information. It sucks

My thoughts on BTTS are,,, well it sure was a season that exists. I'm happy they were able to wrap up the show at all, lots of cartoons these days don't even get the chance, but it was hurried and messy and the writing was certainly less than stellar. Also for the love of all things good STOP BRINGING BACK THE SHREDDER. If I were feeling frisky I'd like to write a complete overhaul of the last three seasons, but ADHD generally has other plans for me lol

I saw Sonic 2!

I LOVED IT!! IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!

While I don’t think it’s quite as good as the first one, I still really enjoyed myself! I still think this movie was made by people who genuinely love Sonic, loved hiding little details and references for us fans to find, and tried to make this crackerjack franchise work while still embracing its silliness. Here are my thoughts! (Spoilers under the cut)

I LOVED HOW KNUCKLES WAS WRITTEN. Gullible and not the brightest, but still super-intimidating and powerful. 

Idris Elba as Knuckles was utterly perfect. I am so pleased at long last he has a black voice actor (for those who don’t know, Knuckles was originally meant to be Jamaican. Yes, really.) Hope the guy comes back.

“Oh. They are stairs.” “I have honorably beaten you at this base of ball!” Fucking hilarious. I <3 you, Knuckles.

I love how dirty Sonic and co. get when they’re hurt. The game characters don’t do that, but it’s a fun realistic touch.

I like Tom and Maddie and was glad to see them again. They blow characters like Chris out of the water.

“Let’s go get our kid.” Thank you, Maddie.

Jim Carrey was having the time of his life and I loved it.

They leaned HARD into the shipping with Stone and I loved that too. But Stone doesn’t do very much, which is a shame.

I also love this movie thing where they make the Chaos Animals’ eyes light up and then it spreads to the rest of them when they use their powers. I’m glad it’s something they all do, it’s a fun little characteristic.

The idea of the Chaos Emeralds being fused into the Master Emerald was a neat take on it. In the games and most continuity, the Master Emerald is separate from the Chaos Emeralds. Like, it can control them, but it’s its own unique entity as well.

They played around with the Chaos Emeralds turning thoughts into reality instead of just energy, which was neat. Bit like Green Lantern. Given how things played out in the last movie, I thought that an Emerald was going to turn out to be hidden inside Sonic, or that he was going to turn out to be a living Chaos Emerald, but that wasn’t what happened.

The idea of a human being able to manipulate Chaos power is incredibly unsettling. In a lot of continuities they either are not affected at all, or it kills them. I liked the vocal effect they used with Robotnik absorbing the Emerald’s power.

Sonic and Tails’ bond, as always, is super sweet. I love how they set up the team and basically the rest of the series by the end of the movie.

They address Sonic’s inability to swim, referenced the whole air bubbles thing - but I don’t think I heard the drowning music. Maybe an orchestral version of that would be too close to Jaws.

They worked Longclaw back into the plot (though she doesn’t actually show up, it’s a recorded message) in what I thought was a very clever way. Back before they redesigned Sonic for the first movie, he and Longclaw originally got attacked by lizards instead of echidnas like Knuckles. I imagine they just replaced the lizard people in the continuity with the echidnas, but it was still neat to see.

Sonic and co go running around in temples just like in the old games!

They somehow worked the Olive Garden guy back into the plot!? Like, it wasn’t just a blatant product placement??

When they mentioned Guardian Unit of Nations I think my head popped.

Sonic goes Super and they left it out of the trailers, and it was exactly like it plays out in Sonic X. I think I regressed down to 11 years old again, that was so good. Also, his Super form got triggered by him saying ‘I love you guys’. Chills.

Also, the Emeralds in this continuity are TINY. The Master Emerald is about the size of a basket ball, and the Chaos Emeralds about the size of a golf ball.

And yes, the mid-credits sequence. I screamed, legit screamed. “SHADOW IS COMING HELL YEAH.” Like, we see him and he looks amazing. He doesn’t say anything though, so I wonder who they’ll cast to voice him? I liked Jason Griffith’s gruff Shadow OK, but vastly preferred David Humphrey’s almost-gentle tone with a hint of menace, so I hope they go with that.

I didn’t want them to introduce Shadow right away - Tails and Knuckles are the OGs and they must come first - but I always wanted them to tackle Sonic Adventure 2′s story at some point, because it’s so cinematic. It would make a great movie; the plot almost writes itself, especially without having to justify levels or something. I hope they cast a really good, soulful kid to play Maria.

All of that said, I didn’t think it was as good as the first one. It’s only been two years since the first Sonic movie and I think it shows. This one maybe could have done with some more cuts and fine-tuning.

This movie repeats way too much that was done in the first movie - and I’m not talking flashbacks, they’re actually fine. I just mean straight plot beats. We get Sonic messing around at the house, and a sequence in a bar/tavern. This tavern is in Siberia, and there’s no Tom, but that’s all that’s different. I liked watching Sonic and Tails dancing, but it’d been done before. I just wish we’d got right to the temple.

Sonic and Tails crashing Maddie’s sister Rachel’s wedding is really funny, and I loved watching Rachel and Maddie kick butt in all their finery. BUT - then they focus too much on Rachel having some drama with her fiance Randall, who also is an undercover agent, for some reason? There was no need for that. The crashing wedding scene was fine. I was legit looking at my watch and saying, “I didn’t come here to watch wedding drama. I came here to watch Chaos Animals having adventures.” Once that was over, they never showed up again, but jeez. Most of that belonged on the cutting room floor. Randall didn’t even have to be an agent. Just set up GUN and have the girls kicking ass with Tails’ inventions and you’re golden.

I really hope this movie does well, even though it’s not as good as the first, because if it does, we’ll get a part three. And that part three will be Shadow’s movie. And I would love to see Shadow in a movie. Yes please. Yes yes please.

💛 Do you have any piercings?

I have two holes in my ears from when they were pierced all the way back when I was five, but I haven't actually worn earrings since I was twelve. My hair is too fine and kept strangling anything dangling from my ears until I was literally trying to pull bits of hair out from the post and the ear itself and I just stopped. I was never as attached to the idea of jewellery as my dad was anyway, so EH. The holes are still there, but one assumes they're fully closed in the middle by now.

🌿 Describe your favorite outfit. :3

Mostly I go for comfort! But if I can look nice while at the same time being comfortable... when I'm just lazing around at home I'll often just wear an oversized sweater and leggings. For going out, I'll either wear one of my cowl-necks (because they're thin sweaters made of something that feels so nice, colours of black and three shades of red and blue and green) and a long vest over the top (because it helps minimise my gigantic rack) or my black hoodie with the really vivid flower art on the back. /o/ And I always wear jeans and sneakers. I am like. The opposite of fashionable and I do not care.

I'm realizing that I genuinely have no idea if this means personal lore about me or personal lore about WIPs. I'm gonna go with the former because I have no idea how to tackle the latter without spoilers. Personal lore is I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember. The oldest ones were a young girl finding a unicorn in a magic cave, and another about a young girl finding a golden retriever and getting to keep all the puppies she had. (Yes, bb!calli wrote self-inserts. Yes, they are about the quality you'd expect at age 10, lmao.)

❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?

Oh geez, this is a tough one. A lot of my dream plots are things I have simmering in my WIPs, honestly. But one of my go-to favorite plots in any fandom is a good ol' whumpy h/c healing-after-the-Big-Event fic. Given that you have a tendency to beat the tar out of Leo (positive), who is my favorite turtle to see whumped, I'd probably tap you for it, lol. Or @/dawntreaderflynne who does fantastic bro moments/family feels.

Haha, my username is the same one I've had since a friend first introduced me to ff.net waaay back in the day. I was trying really hard to think of a cool username, or at least one I could live with long-term. And since Calliope is the muse of epic poetry, and l was a very earnest teenager, the thought process basically went 'well, this is for a writing account, and hey, stories are sort of like long non-rhyming poems, right?' So 'calliopechild' was basically 'if I claim any muse as a fic writer, it's the long-winded one,' lol.
