Since @imagine-darksiders and @another-darksiders-blog did the last two, thought I could take a stab at it this year!! Here is the NEW prompt list for October 2023, and a variety of new prompts for each day! Keep in mind it is a free for all, so no need to complete every single day if you are not able, but do whatever tickles your fancy! A friend and I have been playing through the Darkside Detective games, and HOOOO BOY as if I could play a niche indie game and NOT immediately fall in love. So, here is a redraw of the second game’s official banner art thingy.

This Darksiders fanart started a long time ago, maybe some peoples already seen the WIP. And it surely is on of the most detailed drawing we made (for the moment hehehe). It's not perfect there is some little things to correct I think, but we cant stay on it eternaly. Nothing is perfect, and it's also by making mistakes that we learn !

Darksiders: Soul Eater Vulgrim

Finished illustration of the demon, Vulgrim from the video game series Darksiders.

A friendly and humble demon merchant, despite consuming the souls of the dead, which you collect from your slain enemies to use as currency to buy special items from him. Seems reasonable.

I love this character, and it always gives me warm fuzzy feelings when I see his charms dangling in the distance marking his Serpent Hole locations. A port in the storm between adventuring and always a friendly face to greet you.

Anyway I had a lot of fun with this. It was a complete spur of the moment thing I started a couple months ago to take a break from my other projects, and kept it in limbo until October since if felt like a good Halloween themed piece, being a demon and all.

As mentioned in my Sketch and WIP posts, the Darksiders series of video games is a real gem and deserves so much more love. Y’all sleeping on this franchise.

I’ll share some close up shots since sizing it down lost a ton of the little details, plus maybe some progress shots since they look pretty neat with just the shadow and lighting effects turned on.

he's steve burnside from resident evil code veronica!

the long and short of code veronica is that claire redfield (one of the protagonists from RE2) gets caught infiltrating an umbrella location (evil company behind all the zombie outbreaks and horrible human experiments) and sent to their private prison, owned by one of umbrellas founding families (the ashfords) and literally the first night she's there an outbreak happens. steve is also there, and for the most part he's off doing his own thing and only very briefly a playable character. the reason HES there is because his dad worked for umbrella and sold company secrets, and for that they shot his mom in the head and dumped both him and his dad in the private prison. he ends up shooting his dad later bc he became a victim of the outbreak and got zombie'd

w/o going too much into the larger aspects of the plot regarding the ashfords, the second half of the game takes place in an antarctic umbrella base, and steve gets captured there, gets infected by the villains, and turns into a monster. he very briefly tries to kill you, but then regains his senses and saves your/claire's life at the cost of his own, and dies.

he's a very.. divisive character among RE fans, despite literally only appearing in this game (and technically in a retelling in a later game). a lot of people found him annoying bc of his voice in the original, bc he almost gets himself killed in an honestly stupid way such that the player is forced to drop everything and save him, bc he has an attitude and comes off as a tryhard, and bc there's been a rumor for literal decades that he was a last minute replacement for leon, the other protagonist from RE2, and so came to be thought of as an inferior copy of a better character

granted he's not. handled well. he flits in and out the story and doesn't really contribute much in terms of being an active presence, and the bit where he nearly kills himself bc of his own actions when the solution is right in front of him doesn't exactly leave a good impression.

but he's also just a regular teen who got dragged into all this against his will. he's a scared high schooler trying to put up a front both bc he doesn't want to look lame in front of the girl he has a crush on, and because if he doesn't he'll start screaming and never stop

#arc answers #he comes off a lot better in that retelling though #the 'game of oblivion' portion of darkside chronicles #it smooths away a lot of the more aggravating parts of code veronica and in general steve just comes across as a lot more likeable #i imprinted on him in high school bc i saw fanart of his monster form and went 'THATS COOL'#and then i read up on him and went 'noo hes just like me!! whyd he have to die its not fair!!'#and now hes like. my son. my annoying and corny son #cockyroaches

Not a request or anything cause I don’t think u take those, but you ever thought/think about doing a Darkside detective fic? There aren’t too many and dear god I know most of us would consume it immediately (also I love the different styles of McQueen n Dooley cause they’re goofy lil nerds who r in love)

Hey, thanks for the ask Anon! I've definitely thought about writing some fanfic for The Darkside Detective. Since the humor and style are so quirky and distinct, I feel like I need to study up to get it right. I want McQueen and Dooley to be in-character if I write them.

So, yeah, I can't promise if/when, but the ideas are definitely swirling around in my mind about that one. Thinking about fanfic is the first step to writing fanfic, so I might just get hit with inspiration sometime and roll with it. ♥
