Dialectic Composition: Centricity and Eccentricity
Centricity by Maria L. Berg 2023
While contemplating the next steps in my study of contradictory abstract nouns, I started reading The Power of the Center: A Study of Composition in the Visual Arts by Rudolf Arnheim, and realized that focusing on composition, both in my images and in my poetry is a logical next step.
Arnheim proposes that there are two compositional systems: the centric and the…

My Wheelbarrow Teacher
After a number of years away from the forum, of which I was once a very active member, I received a pingback in my inbox from the dVerse Poets Pub via a prompt curated by Laura Bloomsbury entitled MTB: Cleaving to Antonyms in Contrapuntal Lines which included a link to a Contrapuntal prompt of mine from 2018. It appears I have been called back to post once more.
Strangely ( or not), I had just…

We Don't Need Television
We're DONE being quiet
Makes us wanna holler
When they try to silence us
We’re done being quiet
Makes us wanna break free
When they try to hold us down
We’re done being still
Our movement is revelation
Watch us
Hear us
Our voice revolution
We’ve had enough

I wish I knew how to quit you*
Although my heart breaks at the thought.
But neither of us has a clue.
I gazed into your eyes and knew
This crazy love would come to naught.
I wish I knew how to quit you.
Sunshine, rain, and winter’s ice blue
In a maze of feelings we’re caught,
But neither of us has a clue.
Deep in my heart, my love is true
No matter how hard my mind…

Ode to Spring
The heaviness of the winter has lifted,
the air is clear and light.
Birds are singing their farewells,
To long winter nights.
The sun is shining brightly,
Lighting up the morning sky,
Beautiful shades of blue,
And white clouds floating by.
My heart is singing
a cheerful new tune.
Rejoicing in the promise
that spring will be here soon.

Distracted Days I wonder at the world in which we live. Distracted days filled with the inane chatter of the putting away of crowns by princes- while floods steal the lives of innocents next door.

Why a Pear Tree?
Why would I bein a pear tree?On the first dayof Christmas, too.I am a farm bird,a runner in fields, and wouldn’tappeal to you.I’m not as brightas a pheasant, and not quiteas cute as a quail;my body is grey, but my face is pleasant, blushing reddish, the same as my tail.

Quadrille Monday
Whimzygizmo’s prompt for today’s Quadrille (a poem of exactly 44 words) at dVerse Poets Pub is “Friday.” For an extra challenge, I used my new The Artist Magnetic Poetry Kit (assoc link). I added the word Friday with part of a label sticker on one of the magnets. It was a very different Quadrille experience. Forty-four words is a lot when you’ve only got two hundred to choose from and you’re…

A prompt from the dVerse Poets Pub titled, Prosery: Valsa George-“The Accidental Poet”
The sun sank its blood orange form into the stillness of the ocean. The sea was pond like and the dull glowing orb seemed bigger than the horizon. I guess you could call it a moment. But it wasn’t. Not yet. A fish jumped. Arcing its way along the sinking circumference of the end of the day, it traced a path…

In The Distance

From far in the distanceCrashing waves careenOn a starlit rocky shore-His lantern lights the paththrough rustling grassAnd shifting sandsDown to the ocean’s floor,For he hears the call of sirensBewitching his lonesome heart‘Come and suffer nevermore.’

In The Moment
What once was – scattered
The silence was loud – A cacophonyIn the moment felt after – Their two hearts beating as oneWhat once was – scattered – What it now collectsSo beyond what could have been – In the moment of his kissWhen he marked her with a smack – That she returns it in kind
