I attended my first craft sale in like 10 years yesterday. And my 60yo, Mother-in-Law got to meet... the Furries.
They put my table right next to the fundraising table for the campus Furry club, and those poor kids were so nervous sitting next to a 39yo me and my 60yo Mum-in-Law.
And my MiL was a bit confused as to why they were nervous, because "They're helping animals, right? What's wrong with that?" She thought they were protesting meat, or supporting animal shelters.
So I got to explain it to her what, exactly, a Furry is, while these kids were kind of shrinking into themselves next to us. :( And my MiL just sort of frowns at the kids then, and demanded to know... "Well then why aren't they in the costumes?"
See, my Mum-in-Law is a professional artist, and the woman who makes the Halloween costumes for several of our cousins, and she gets INTO it every year. A few years back she turned a still-crawling nephew into a deer, with antlers and hooves and everything. This last year three kids got transformed into a knife, spoon, and fork. Foam, sewing, paints, she does it ALL for these kids.
So naturally she begged to see pics of the fursuits.
AND THE FURRY CLUB JUMPED INTO ACTION!
We had several minutes of shared photos and high-pitched squealing noises from both parties, with MiL gasping over how imaginative and skillful the club was for both coming up with these fursonas at all and for making/designing the suits.
We also learned that a LOT of the Furry club are autistic/neurodivergent in some way or another, which is a trait that runs STRONG in my husband's family. I'm autistic, my husband is autistic, and while very few of us have been formally diagnosed, we all just sort of acknowledge that like 70% of the family at all ages have SOMETHING going on. So we got to chat about a LOT of things together. All in all, it was an awesome as shit experience for us!
TL:DR, to any Furries out there, I think you guys have just given my Mum-in-Law some hope for the younger generations. Also, my Mum-in-Law adores you all.
