Thinking about MBS and fairytales, but like. Classic fairytales. And how to change the stories so that it would fit the kids and their platonic relationships and all that love.

Like. Example one. Reynie. Reynie would have to be beauty and the beast, right? He's still at the orphanage, and Ms. Perumal is his tutor who occasionally goes to the capital to pick up schooling surplies. Curtain stars as Gaston, except what he wants is to take Reynie on as an apprentice, someone as clever as him to raise in his image. Reynie is awkwardly dodging adoption left and right. He just wants to read! He doesn't get why the whole town seems so willing to believe and do what that man says...

Anyway, Ms. Perumal goes on one of her trips, except this time she doesn't come back.

Reynie is worried out of his mind. Nobody is listening to him! Nobody seems to care! And Reynie, though he's scared and is only ever hopeful that he's brave, finally decides he's going after her and runs off into the woods in order to find her.

What he finds instead is an enchanted castle.

Ms. Perumal isn't there. A giant fluffy monster that introduces himself as Mr. Benedict is. Number Two is a talking clock and Rhonda is a talking Candelabra. Constance, Kate, and Sticky are there too, but I'm not sure if they should be human or not. I'm leaning not, but then I need to figure out what enchanted objects they would be.... Maybe Kate' a teacup (who terrifies everyone with her gravity defying stunts), Sticky is a pair of spectacles or a polishing cloth, and Constance is a pendant of a miniature globe.

It turns out, the whole castle has been cursed for quite some time. Reynie, who wandered through a storm half the night and is rather I'll indeed, ends up staying for a week while he recovers. He's determined to set out after Ms. Perumal once more as soon as he's well enough, but then Mr. Benedict shows him a mirror that reveals it was a simple matter of the storm causing the bridge to collapse and having to take the long way round. Reynie relaxes. He checks the mirror every day, but he also consumes books and listens to Constance's poetry and plays chess with Benedict. Kate tours him around the castle, and Sticky eagerly talks books with him. It's peaceful and new and nobody's trying to trick him into signing his life away on the dotted line. If this was a matter of loving someone to break a spell, the castle's inhabitants would be cured ten times over.

When Ms. Perumal finally arrives at the forest, Reynie is there to meet her. He takes her to greet all his new friends, and then they head back to the village together, trying to solve the mystery of the curse and with plans of future visits written in their minds.

But to the village they bring their stories, right? Stories of enchanted castles and beasts who are kind and sorcery in need of breaking. They don't see Curtain watching, growing furiouser and furiouser.

The man declares Ms. Perumal delusional for believing a child's tale and threatens her with a mental institution. Reynie, who is desperate, goes, "No, no- look! It's all real!" And shows the mirror the kids had given him to keep in touch.

Curtain emphasizes the 'enchanted' and the 'beast' and the 'sorcery' without any of the other details, and soon enough there's an angry mob. They storm the castle while Reynie and Miss Perumal escape and follow after them to try and warm their friends.

In the end, what's going to break the curse is truth, and enough people believing in it. Curtain had cursed his brother all those years ago and has been influencing the villagers' minds for years. The first person to realise the truth is Milligan, who hears Kate's voice and immediately blinks out of the depressive haze that has been clouding his thoughts for far too long. Suddenly, he remembers! And together, the children make sure the rest of the village remembers the truth too. Sticky's Parents and Noland and John and Violet and dozens of others all come together and turn against Curtain, bringing him down.

Miss Perumal adopts Reynie the very next day. The occupants of the castle, still getting used to their normal human bodies, nonetheless pull themselves together enough to throw a party celebrating a new Perumal and Constance's birthday and reunification of families and the broken curse. It lasts hours. There's dancing and food and a whole lot of love.

And they live happily ever after. The end. (⁠◍⁠•⁠ᴗ⁠•⁠◍⁠)

Tangled Haunted Mansion - Stalyan as Constance Hatchaway

Remember last year when I drew that picture of Vigor as Leota? Well, I had a whole post about Tangled the Series crossed over with the Haunted Mansion. Yesterday, I reviewed that post, and today, I had the urge to draw this.

Originally, I cast Lady Caine as Constance, and Stalyan as the woman sitting on the gravestone in the stretching gallery (who Disney has decided is also Constance Hatchaway), but I changed my mind, because Stalyan is the one who was a bride in the series itself.

I wanted to draw Constance (Candace’s ancestor / incarnation) and I decided on a wimp to color her in pixel art. However, I have no idea how to make pixel backgrounds but I never let the fact that I don’t know how to do something stop me from doing something before. (And I don’t think it’s awful at least.)

Anyway, I’ve always been curious about Constance. Was she related to Phinestein, or did they eventually get together? And if so, how? Or did something happen and Candace and Phineas are reincarnations of the Governess and the mad doctor? Oh well. We’ll never get the answers.

Penny loves Rapunzel. For one they're both just a tad unhinged, she hardcore relates on wanting to see the outside world and feeling a bit trapped ya know. Like Rapunzel she has a million and one Hobby's! She adores the love story between Rapunzel and Flynn. She's obsessed with the scene in the movie where Flynn breaks outta prison.

Mischa's would be Mulan. he loves himself a badass shawty just tryin to save china and make her family proud anddd he's sobbing like full on sobbing she did it she saved china against all odds, She made her family hella proud and she got the hunk. He thinks Yao, Ling and Chein po are the most hilarious trio of all time.

Ocean really likes Elsa CONCEAL DONT FEEL no but ocean thinks Elsa is hella smart and would be a amazing queen(Totally doesn't have any hidden away feelings that are gonna burst at any given moment of stress) she super dislikes Anna though too ditzy for her liking (didn't help that everyone in school calls her Anna for months after frozen is released)

Noel loves Tiana! She's a bit tragic she falls in love with a "bad" boy but still being a strong lady who knows what she wants (also he loves the theatrics of the shadow man)

Ricky is a old fashioned boy and he likes Cinderella. He loves a rags to riches story. He likes the old animation style of Disney especially the dress animations. He also is the loudest voice in the argument of how the hell prince charming couldn't tell that Cinderella was Cinderella

Constance likes Merida. She too doesn't want to be the same as her parents she wants anything but. She understands the annoying little brothers the I'm right all the time mom the dad who just doesn't want to argue. She dreams about just doing whatever she wants. She also understand the absolute love of her brother, the mom who loves her without questions, the dad who would die for her.

what are your favorite authors? and which ones you would consider the essentials for anyone interested in start writing?

my favorite authors are, in no particular order but rather how important they have been to my writing:

gillian flynn. all her books play so expertly with genre, unreliable narrator and tapping into generational and contemporary anxieties. she's got such a subtle hand as she arranges everything into position, and a really pleasant writing style.

mieko kawakami. i just love everything about how she writes loneliness, alienation and lingering in the moments of the day.

sayaka murata. she's soooo. god. i love her short stories. i hope more get translated soon.

constance debré, éduoard louis, annie ernaux. i clump these three together because they're approaching class and short terse non-fiction from different angles but all do it in really riveting ways.

tamsyn muir. because it's just a wild fun ride. like. it's a treat to read her books. she made me feel less hung-up about perfect worldbuilding.

also, no less honorable mentions: sally rooney, elena ferrante, carmen maria machado, arkady martine, louise glück.

as for essentials, that's a hard one. i'm a firm believer in building your own personal canon of "books that make me wanna write/writers whose style i want to subliminate into my own", but i'm also a genuine lover of creative writing books, so a short list of those would be:

imaginative writing, janet burroway. (writing to me is so much about a practice, exercises, warm-ups, and burroway really digs into that.) writing down the bones, natalie goldberg. (classic. though i don't turn to this a lot anymore it's still a staple.) reading like a writer, francine prose. (can't be a writer without reading and prose breaks down the way of reading very well.) refuse to be done, matt bell. (bit of a step up. how to write a novel in three drafts, essentially. genuinely the most helpful one i've read in years, i've leaned on it so much for finishing my novel.) and this is more later-stage, but it's also a good reality check for anyone wanting to go professional: before and after the book deal, courtney maum.
