Future Forest bag illustration
Future Forest is an art-led reforestation project that aims to help the Yangil tribe in Zambales, Philippines sustain their reforestation initiatives. The project is a partnership between MAD Travel, a social enterprise that focuses on social tourism, Works of Heart, a social impact design studio, a group of Manila-based artists, and Gouache, a company that specializes in waxed canvas bags and similar goods. The project goes beyond just fundraising and involves creatives in understanding the dreams of the community. The project hopes to make a small but meaningful contribution to the reforestation project, one that is within their means but also fully aligned with what the community specifically needs.
As one of the partner artists in the project, we were tasked to create art pieces that would raise awareness and support for the reforestation efforts in Yangil Village, Zambales, Philippines. The art pieces were intended to be sold to raise funds for the community's seedling nursery, which would help sustain the reforestation initiatives in the area. We were given creative freedom to explore their own styles and mediums, but the theme of the artwork had to be centered on the environment, specifically on the importance of reforestation and sustainable living. The goal was not only to raise funds, but also to spark conversations and inspire action towards a more livable environment for everyone.
Everyone’s works were amazing, you can learn more about this project here!

Weekly Studio Spotlight - Sophie Green
This week, we had the pleasure of speaking to Sophie Green. Sophie is an award winning and incredibly passionate wildlife artist & conservationist. Using her talent and platforms to raise awareness for wild animals, animal welfare and their habitats along with donating 10% of all profits towards conservation charities. Our Q&A this week was a good one... have a read below!
Tumblr media
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
As a wildlife artist, I mainly draw inspiration from the natural world and the wildlife that needs protecting. 10% of my profits have always gone to conservation charities, so often a piece will be aimed at drawing attention to a specific species or subspecies.
How did you start your art career?
I have painted since I was a child, but it wasn’t until my mid-twenties that I decided to finally try and become a professional artist. I was working as a primary school teacher at the time, so I gradually reduced my hours at work and set up social media pages, painted commissions and sold my work at art fairs. Eventually, I was able to quit my job and embark on a full-time career and I haven’t looked back since!
What’s your favourite piece you have created so far?
I think that ‘The March’ has been my most successful piece so far. It was a finalist in the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year award, where it got ‘highly commended’ and has also been selected for several other awards. In terms of artistic style and technique though, I think my favourites are still ‘Rohan’ (the tiger profile) and ‘Revival’ (the bison), as they were the most challenging.

What art tools could you not live without?
My Masterson ‘Sta-Wet’ palette was a game changer for me, because I work in acrylics (which dry within minutes). The palette keeps the paint wet for weeks (much like oil paints), without compromising their quality. I also couldn’t get as much detail in my work without the use of good size 0-1, round synthetic brushes.
What is your biggest challenge with your work?
I love what I do and I am always coming up with big and exciting ideas for projects, charity collaborations etc., but there are only so many hours in the day and it can be overwhelming. I work 7 days a week and also paint tiny details for hours on end, so have developed ongoing issues with the tendons in my wrist. I think one of the biggest challenges for me is avoiding burnout!

Have you always had an interest in wild animals?
I’ve always been interested in animals and wildlife, but when I first started painting, I focused more on domestic pets; perhaps because a lot of my pieces were commissions. It didn’t take long for me to realise that I wasn’t as passionate about painting other people’s pets and move over to wild animals. We have so much love and compassion for our pets, yet wild animals are hunted/poached and tortured. They need our protection.
Have you ever done or would you like to do a safari?
Going on a safari currently sits at the top of my list of things I want to do. I had plans to go on a safari before the pandemic hit and put everybody’s travel plans on hold. It would be amazing to take the reference photos of the animals myself. Although I have no problem paying other photographers to use their amazing work as a reference, there’s something special about visiting a place and using the money raised from the trip to give back to the country’s wildlife.
Would you rather live in a forest or by the sea?
Funnily enough, I currently live in a forest by the sea, so I’ve got the best of both!

Where’s the most amazing place you’ve ever been to before?
There are so many! I absolutely loved the Bahamas. It was one of the most beautiful, laid back places. I was also lucky enough to visit the bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico last year, which was a once in a lifetime experience. Oh, and seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland!
Other than creating art, how else do you like to spend your time?
Over the past year, I’ve learnt to be more content with a quieter lifestyle. I live in quite a remote part of the country and work from home, so during lockdown, I went on walks every day, read lots of books, did yoga and played tennis. One of my biggest passions is travelling and lockdown definitely made me appreciate that even more!
What do you listen to / watch when you are working?
I usually either listen to a podcast (either true crime or my friend’s podcast, ‘Blank’), or I’ll split the screen on my laptop (I don’t have a TV) and put on something that I’ve watched a million times already, so I don’t need to watch it to know what’s happening. To be honest, it’s usually something really corny like Pride and Prejudice!

🦈🦈WIN A PAINTING🦈🦈 & 🦈🦈Support Conservation🦈🦈 First 2 Images of 17 ft Tiger Shark named "White Spot" by @jim_abernethy The last image of the beautiful art was produced by the incredibly generous & talented conservation artist... @tasha_roth_artist that was so moved by "White Spots" sad story, she felt compelled to paint "White Spot" and donate funds raised to help protect sharks! This painting is being raffled off to raise funds for @wildlifevoiceinc which is Jim's passionately driven nonprofit that focuses on the protection of sharks and all wildlife. Not only that but there will be multiple winners. 3 others will win one of these gorgeous shark pins and one winner will win a surprise poster print. Here's how to purchase a ticket! 1 entry $5 3 entries for $10 10 entries for $20 Just message @tasha_roth_artist to purchase a raffle ticket; PayPal, cc, venmo, fb pay are all accepted. Winners will be drawn next Saturday on December 5th. Here's the story behind the painting: This is "White Spot", a tiger shark named after the white spot on her dorsal fin. She was a shark that @jim_abernethy had lots of fond memories of, as she was very affectionate loving her head to be rubbed. Unfortunately, she was killed by a trophy hunters in Florida, as they tried to get a world record. After being hung and weighed at the dock, the killers left and the local Bahamians cut her open thinking she was pregnant and sure enough, she was. All the babies had also perished except for two that was released with umbilical cord still attached. Jim's great friend Guy Harvey @drguyharvey had the attempted world record disqualified. A tragic story with a purpose to make us want to do more to prevent the unnecessary slaughter of protected terrestrial and aquatic wildlife! I painted this as a tribute to White Spot and all sharks that desperately need our help! Again, 100% of funds raised from this painting will go directly to the conservation of our oceans and wildlife. @tasha_roth_artist @jim_abernethy @wildlifevoiceinc #conservationart #sharkart #sharkartist (at Tiger Beach) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIEhVcLBfJq/?igshid=l3vg98bfhvhy

Still have a few books and prints remaining and they'll stay discounted until I flee the scene in a couple of weeks, close the shop & start drawing native birds again. I'm thinking I'll set up a few market stalls before the end of the year in my hometown and hopefully get to hand you your native Australian trees that you can plant yourself—instead of all this 3rd-party planting stuff. Nevertheless. 50% off for now! -- Type the word "ZERODEFORESTATION" at the checkout and it'll automatically take 50% of anything that's available on the web store. — "ZERODEFORESTATION" — 50% OFF EVERYTHING! — www.samuelhumphreys.bigcartel.com — #zerodeforestation #artprint #illustrator #illustration #prints #books #birdart #aviary #orientalsurrealism #conservationart https://www.instagram.com/p/B17XAY1lUw7/?igshid=1mkv7h86fwuni

If you're a potential student of museum-related fields, you might have gathered by now that it's a tough one. Questionable remuneration, fast-disappearing budgets, social invisibility, a limited number of permanent jobs, and ironically high barriers to entry are some of the main complaints. So if you know all this and you still want to do this because you love the field, then you deserve a star and a digital certificate (because there's no budget to print you a physical one and also #sustainability). We recognise your efforts and applaud your determination! 👏👏👏 And recommend you also get business and marketing skills because private practice may become necessary. . . . _______ Follow for more conservation memes. ❤️ . . . .

Because of the documentary Masters in Forbidden City (2016), more people know about the conservators, which actually is a relative young profession and most of the museums in China still do not have any in-house restoration department. Since 2017, Institution of art work restoration and research center at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art began to restore Teochew wood-craving.  The conservation of art works requires overlapping expertise of art history, anthropology, physics, chemical and the conservation with the modern technology. Besides, technicians need to repair the art work with respect, which means they need to keep every detail removed from the art work, including the dust and the cotton that has been used during the repairing process. Teochew wood-craving, also called Chaozhou wood-craving in Chinese, is a form of Chinese wood craving originated from South China since Tang Dynasty, which also is one of the national intangible culture heritage.Compared with the restoration of painting, the 3-dimensional wood-craving increase the difficulty for conservator. #art#conservationart#chinese culture#artistic#cgtn

Video by @jim_abernethy // The wild Elephants of Thailand (Land of Smiles) checking us out while we enjoy this life changing experience, that was truly very emotional for me! To see elephants in the wild where they belong in a protected park was definitely on the list of creatures I hoped to be fortunate enough to observe! Here this mom with both a boy and girl babies get minerals from the barren clay spot! Seeing our planets beautiful wildlife inspires me even more to protect the creatures we still have! Who loves elephants? We must end the needless slaughter of these peaceful, social, sentient and truly beautiful creatures that is being done for the terrible ivory trade as well as the sickening trophy hunting! Please go to the link in my bio and help protect our fellow earthlings!
