Grass root with natural lac dye 🧡   A few years ago I came across some willow root growing underwater in a river in the UK and it got me thinking about the binding properties of root: What if we could grow our clothes from seed?   As an underwater photographer (my real job @zenaholloway ) I was looking for solutions to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and I found that I could sustainably grow grass seed in beeswax moulds.

Scientists predict that nearly all the coral will be gone by 2050 due to global warming 😢 so my response is to grow a sustainable coral reef from grass root.  I want to imagine a future that still has coral reefs. They support 25% of all marine life, and are some of the most spectacular places on the planet (especially if you’re an underwater photographer 😉)   I’ll be exhibiting my ‘coral’ with Material Matters from 22-25 September, top floor at the iconic Bargehouse @oxotowerwharf on London’s South Bank.
Be sure to register early for free tickets on @materialmatters.design See you there… #saveouroceans #saveourseas #coralbleaching #coral #artforchange #ecoart #bioart #fibreart #slowart #rethink #biotechnology #naturaldye #naturaldyeing #maker #contemporarycraft #makersmovement (at The Oxo Tower, Southbank) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiVbsXjoRpF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Experience the exhibition by Na Omi Judy Shintani 'Dream Refuge for Children Imprisoned,' where art breathes life into the silent struggles of imprisoned children. Come visit the exhibition at Asian Arts Gallery, Center for the Arts, Towson University.
Artist Statement by Na Omi Judy Shintani:
“I began this installation process with “The Innocent Dreamer” the first sleeping child I drew in honor of the Japanese American children imprisoned at Tanforan Racetrack in San Bruno, California after the Pearl Harbor attack. I stuffed the girl’s mattress with hay and was instantly transported to that time, experiencing the smell and itchiness, and the insult of having to make my bed to sleep in a horse stable. The life size child drawing elicited tearful memories of those who were children in American concentration camps. She touched all kinds of people’s hearts and souls. She brought home the horror of imprisoning children as terrorists in our country.
Then the shock of the treatment of Central American children at our borders bombarded me, and I did what I always do - express my activism through art. I expanded the project to include more sleeping children to connect the US history of incarcerating children to the atrocities happening to children being imprisoned and separated from their families today. While the children safely slumber in the Dream Refuge, one can hear the realities of their experienced trauma, and know that it may still affect them now. The drawings represent Japanese American children that were incarcerated for years in American concentration camps during WWII (my own father being one of them), American Indian boarding school children who were denied their culture and were taken from their communities, and the Central American children who are imprisoned, separated from their families, and living in squalid, unsafe conditions at the border.”
Date and Time: April 19 – May 18 (closed March 17-24)
Monday – Saturday 11 am – 4 pm

Fringe
Tumblr media
Rebecca Belmore, Fringe (2007). Photography printed on canvas. Global Contemporary Art.
Rebecca Belmore's Fringe is a deeply moving and thought-provoking piece that addresses themes of trauma, healing, and history, particularly in the context of indigenous peoples and women. This analysis delves into the various elements that make Fringe a significant work in contemporary art.
Artistic Concept: Fringe is a striking piece, depicting a life-sized photograph of a reclining Indigenous woman, her back turned to the viewer. A striking feature of the work is a large wound on her back, from which red threads resembling blood, or perhaps fringe, flow down. This wound and its vivid depiction are central to understanding the piece's emotional and historical depth.
Symbolism and Representation: The wound in Fringe is symbolic of the historical and ongoing trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, particularly the women. It speaks to the violence inflicted upon these communities and the scars – both physical and emotional – that they bear. The flowing threads can be interpreted as a symbol of bleeding, representing ongoing pain, or as fringe, suggesting a cultural connection and resilience.
Medium and Technique: Belmore's choice of medium – photography printed on canvas, with the addition of the three-dimensional element of the threads – bridges traditional and contemporary art forms. The use of these materials emphasizes the raw and tactile nature of the subject matter, making it both visually striking and emotionally resonant.
Contextual Importance: Fringe is not just a piece of art; it is a statement about the resilience and suffering of Indigenous peoples. In the context of Belmore's broader work, which often tackles issues of social and political importance, Fringe stands out as a particularly poignant commentary on the intersection of gender, history, and colonialism.
Reflecting on Trauma and Resilience: How does Fringe by Rebecca Belmore resonate with your understanding of art as a medium for addressing historical and cultural trauma? What emotions or thoughts does this piece evoke in you about the experiences of Indigenous peoples?

Mail Art Unites to Combat Human Trafficking: An International Call for Awareness
New York City, July 22, 2023 - In an effort to raise awareness and combat the pervasive issue of human trafficking, artists from around the globe are joining forces for a unique initiative - "Mail Art Against Human Trafficking" or "Arte Postal Contra Trafico Humano." The project, organized ahead of the World Day Against Human Trafficking on July 30, aims to shed light on the illegal and degrading practices endured by countless individuals worldwide. Through their creative expressions, these artists seek to break the silence surrounding this alarming phenomenon.
Human trafficking remains a severe global crisis that affects millions of people, leaving them trapped in exploitative and horrifying situations. Despite efforts from various organizations and governments, this modern-day slavery continues to thrive, often in the shadows of society. "Mail Art Against Human Trafficking" seeks to harness the power of art and creativity as a potent tool to inform and inspire change.
The call for artists to participate in this initiative beckons individuals to send their thought-provoking artworks to a specific address - Rumichaca 1323 and Clemente Ballen in Guayaquil, Ecuador. By utilizing the medium of mail art, the organizers aim to engage a diverse range of artists from all corners of the world, transcending geographical boundaries to unite against this common cause.
The chosen exhibition space, WordUp Community Bookstore in New York City, serves as a central point to showcase these heartfelt creations. As the artworks arrive, they will be thoughtfully curated to form a powerful visual display that speaks to the urgency of addressing human trafficking.
Mail art has a rich history of being a democratic and inclusive art form, often centered around societal issues and political activism. By incorporating this artistic practice into the fight against human trafficking, the organizers hope to amplify the message and reach a wider audience. Each piece of art will act as a voice, condemning the heinous crime and advocating for change.
Participants are encouraged to explore various themes surrounding human trafficking, including the stories of survivors, the impact on families, the role of society in eradicating this issue, and the importance of prevention and support systems. Through their art, these creators aim to dismantle the misconceptions and stigma associated with human trafficking, fostering empathy and understanding.
One of the project's key goals is to educate the public about the signs of human trafficking and encourage them to report any suspicious activities to authorities. By raising awareness, it is hoped that communities worldwide will become vigilant and responsive, thereby safeguarding vulnerable individuals from falling prey to traffickers.
As the submission deadline approaches on July 30, the anticipation for the unveiling of these compelling artworks builds. Organizers are optimistic that this powerful collective expression will resonate with visitors to the Word Up Community Bookstore, inspiring conversations and driving meaningful action.
In a world where art continues to transcend boundaries and serve as a mirror of society, "Mail Art Against Human Trafficking" stands as a testament to the strength of human compassion and creativity. Together, artists and audiences alike have the opportunity to make a real difference and contribute to the global fight against human trafficking.
To learn more about this initiative and how you can contribute, visit the project's website at www.mailartagainsttrafficking.org.

Just re-watched Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. Made in 1940, this film is usually described as a comedy. It's much more than that. Sadly 82 years later we find ourselves almost in the same situation. Every sentence in the last speech of this movie is still valid today. If you haven't seen this masterpiece please take a couple of hours off to enjoy and reflect on The Great Dictator. #movies #artforsocialchange #artforchange #cinema #thegreatdictator #charliechaplin #artforartssake https://www.instagram.com/p/ClVukMIgEuj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
