A little preview of a new spoon carving that I’ve been working on. I actually started carving this Kingfisher spoon at the end of last year and and it is taking forever to carve. The concept and design of the piece is based on some beautiful blue spalting that I found within this piece of Silver Birch wood though that’s almost disappeared whilst I’ve been carving it. Sorry that this is the first ‘work in progress’ shot for a long time but I’ve been reluctant to share any shots of it due to the ongoing issues with Facebook scammers using my photos to sell fake copies of my work… though I’ve now pretty much had to give up on fighting them as it was becoming a full time job and Facebook aren’t interested in protecting the copyright of individuals (yes, I’m still seething with rage about it!!!). . . . . . #kingfisher #objects #sculpture #woodsculpture #finecraft #artisan #maker #craftsman #designer #designermaker #galleryart #spoons #woodworking #tableware #woodenspoons #woodart #woodcraft #finewoodworking #crafts #contemporarycraft #slowcraft #spooncarving #handmademovement #traditionalskills #woodcrafts #woodcarving #uniquestyle #woodsculpture https://www.instagram.com/p/CdLnNI_qjN-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Grass root with natural lac dye 🧡   A few years ago I came across some willow root growing underwater in a river in the UK and it got me thinking about the binding properties of root: What if we could grow our clothes from seed?   As an underwater photographer (my real job @zenaholloway ) I was looking for solutions to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and I found that I could sustainably grow grass seed in beeswax moulds.

Scientists predict that nearly all the coral will be gone by 2050 due to global warming 😢 so my response is to grow a sustainable coral reef from grass root.  I want to imagine a future that still has coral reefs. They support 25% of all marine life, and are some of the most spectacular places on the planet (especially if you’re an underwater photographer 😉)   I’ll be exhibiting my ‘coral’ with Material Matters from 22-25 September, top floor at the iconic Bargehouse @oxotowerwharf on London’s South Bank.
Be sure to register early for free tickets on @materialmatters.design See you there… #saveouroceans #saveourseas #coralbleaching #coral #artforchange #ecoart #bioart #fibreart #slowart #rethink #biotechnology #naturaldye #naturaldyeing #maker #contemporarycraft #makersmovement (at The Oxo Tower, Southbank) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiVbsXjoRpF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reposted from @maudandmabellondon ........ “We like to think our work has a strong connection to nature whether that's visible in the material itself with voids and natural edge or how the wood naturally moves as it’s drying. Or how the size and shape of the wood we get quite often dictates the final shape and size… The end of each process has its own exciting part. After each step it suddenly becomes more whole which is the best part.” Handcarved by Takahashi McGill, the renowned collaborative duo who create beautifully delicate hand turned pieces made from wood, such as ash and beech. This exciting new body of work is finished with an assortment of urushi, which helps to make the wood waterproof and durable. The rich organic shades compliment the refined texture and reveals the natural characteristics of the wood. The distinct mark making from their mastered technique glides through the form, resulting in an exquisitely tangible form. The textured surface complements McGil’s selection of lime wood. It is finished with sabi urushi, a mixture of clay, water and urushi. The smooth interior contrasts the pinched surface, embracing the original markings on the wood, protecting its natural beauty. #takahashimcgil #handmade #woodwork #contemporarycraft #madebyhand #limewood #handcarved #handturned #japaneseaesthetic #japanesecraft #maudandmabel #woodenbowl #maudandmabel https://www.instagram.com/p/Chb5XyGDXJN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
