In Danny Phantom, the characters can be interpreted in a variety of ways without making them out of character (in part because they don’t have very consistent characterization sometimes).
A good example is Sam. A lot of people don’t like Sam because she seems hypocritical. She hates the rich but is rich herself. She preaches about vegetarianism, but she can more than afford it. She even has her own greenhouse!
Now, I actually like Sam and don’t interpret her as a hypocrite. I think she is just jumps the gun too quickly. I don’t think she is trying to take a moral high ground, but is just trying to be an activist. But, she’s 14 in the show and is bound to make mistakes. Her heart is in the right place.
I headcannon that she learns to do more research as she gets older and chills out a lot. I feel like adult Sam would go out of her way to be conscientious of where her food (and other goods) come from. Like, I think she’d eat honey because it doesn’t harm bees but would avoid palm oil because of deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia, etc.
I also think she would offer her friends vegan/vegetarian food instead of trying to force them. And maybe try to find foods that taste like meat for Tucker to try.
I also feel like her friends would incorporate more vegetarian/vegan food in their diets (even if they don’t become vegetarian/vegan).

hi! could you maybe do full hcs of an MC who still exhibits symptoms of the red plague? :3
The Arcana HCs: MC with Red Plague symptoms
-- for headcanon purposes, MC has the red scleras and veins in their limbs, as well as higher body temperature, fatigue levels, and sore throat. however, their day-to-day life isn't impacted much past their appearance --
Julian
It was a genuine trauma trigger for him at first
One look at you, and all he sees are the countless bloodshot eyes of the patients he couldn't save staring back at him. Hours of horrific "research" led by Valdemar on bodies just like yours
It makes him feel especially responsible for you, but it also causes quite a bit of inner emotional conflict when he starts to associate your appearance with things like love and hope as well
This is ultimately one of the things that helps him figure out how he wants to move forward after you help him confront his past
Every night, he watches your eyes slip shut and checks your temperature and pulse through the night out of habit
And every morning, he feels like he's witnessing a miracle when your eyes open again. You've lived through another night, and you fully intend to keep on living with no holds barred
It's actually a little healing to see someone with the Red Plague survive and smile
He's still extremely conscientious of your physical state, though. It was weeks before he let you carry your own shopping basket
He keeps track of your temperature in his notes in case it goes higher than your average and insists that you keep a healthy diet and stick to gentler exercises (it doesn't change his own habits)
Asra
As painful as it was for them to bring you back and be immediately faced with the condition they left you to face on your own, they had other things to worry about once it was clear you would live
Like your memories, for example, or his own feelings of inadequacy when it came to giving you a life worth bringing you back into
By the time life had reached a rhythm that left them space to breathe and think again, they'd already adjusted
He's naturally quick to adapt - and physical appearance never mattered much to him anyway. Finding out you couldn't walk as far as you used to was better than when you couldn't walk at all
Unfortunately, them not noticing your appearance (beyond thinking it's cute) makes it harder for them to recognize how other people react to your appearance. They're fairly oblivious to outside opinions (just look at that big hat they consider "subtle")
So when you express any kind of distaste with the way you look, he's a little surprised, if not blindsided. He's quick to teach you glamor and temperature spells when you do, though
They only really see the Red Plague on you when the lighting hits your face at an odd angle or when they're watching your hands
And when he does notice, all he feels now is admiration. He brought you back, but your resilience goes beyond his imagination
Nadia
She doesn't have any memories of the Red Plague - not when she first meets you, at least, at that point everything from her arrival in Vesuvia to waking up three months prior is missing
But it drives the point home to her that you're someone who has suffered and survived in ways she can't comprehend
She's initially a little overcautious. Once she knows for certain that you're somebody she wants to work closely with, she's not sure how best to broach the subject beyond asking if you're cold or tired
Very interested in what your life is like once you do start talking about it - it tells her about you as a person, but it also gives her insight about how the people of Vesuvia remember the Red Plague
Can relate more than a little bit to the loneliness
Goes above and beyond when it comes to providing for your needs
Your permanent fever is making you chilly? She's got blankets and scarves and cloaks and slippers to wrap you up in
Your throat hurts? She's got plenty of tea
You'd prefer to cover your eyes and hands? She can commission a pair of gloves that fit like a second skin and don't inhibit your functioning in any way. Also, sunglasses are trendy now
You're tired? She'll work somewhere you can snooze nearby
Won't stand for anyone treating you poorly because of it
Muriel
He sees your symptoms the same way he sees his own scars
He didn't ask for them, they're a permanent marker of his pain, and the sight of them is enough to drastically affect how people treat him (his imposing size and RBF not taken into account)
And you're the same way, when it comes to your appearance
Of course, you're also the opposite from him in many ways. You get tired easily, and he's sturdily built. You're always getting cold, and he's always too warm. You belong somewhere and he doesn't
Until you two travel together and become Morga's students. Then you have a similar problem on your hands:
She won't stop commenting on both of your appearances!
Between her tying Muriel's hair up where it can't cover his face, and telling you to use your looks to scare enemies in battle, you're both a little lost for words
That's it, that's how you bond, you're both feeling a little too seen and a little underappreciated
Plus, with you constantly feeling cold from the permanent fever, you really need his body heat as you travel further south and his heart is too soft to deny you (you're like a shivering, red chick)
In the end, he doesn't care about your appearance beyond appreciating it as a marker of how you got this far
Portia
Yeah, so she wasn't around for the Red Plague
She doesn't have any frame of reference for what it was like beyond the nightmarish descriptions she hears from other Palace staff, about walking corpses and blood soaked hands
So when she first sees you, someone who acts and appears perfectly healthy beyond having a slightly hoarse voice and wearing more layers than normal, she assumes it's a magic thing
Is it because you use your magic so constantly, it leaves trails where it courses through your hands or assists your sight? Is your skin extra warm because you breathe fire??
Do your scleras turn other colors too???
She's a little surprised to find out that you're the only known survivor of the Red Plague (besides her brother) and that that's why you have those symptoms
Come to think of it, that's kind of badass. You have her respect
She intuitively understands how that must change your life socially, though, and she goes out of her way to help you make connections and smooth over any public fear
She's also got a strong nurturing instinct and loves to fuss over you, keeping you cozy and well rested and fed
Pepi loves your high body temperature
Lucio
Guilt. Guilt. Guilt.
That's it, it's bad enough for him to look at you as a ghost and be confronted with what he knows for a fact is his fault
But it's even worse when he realizes that this is what the body he was supposed to revive himself with ended up becoming: permanently marked by the plague he spent decades outrunning
And it makes him afraid that he'll look like this too, if he makes it back from his horrific goat form in one piece
His fears change as he gets to know you, of course. It goes from not wanting to end up like you to not wanting you to know that how you ended up was his fault
But it also makes it even more real to him how important it is to address the past, even though he doesn't want to
He's not able to look at you without wincing until you leave Vesuvia, after putting things right. It feels too much like the past
Once you do, though, and begin life as journeymen, Lucio gets to find a world that the Plague hasn't touched yet, and that also means getting to see you in a context of your own choosing
He's always been partial to the color red, anyways
And with how much he hates the cold, sleeping next to you is fantastic with your elevated body temp

The Horny Bisexual Trope
Tumblr media
Eleanor Shellstrop, The Good Place
"[In a research paper by The Journal of Sex Research] researchers found that bisexual women, compared to lesbians and heterosexual women, were evaluated as more confused, promiscuous, non-monogamous, neurotic, extraverted, and open to experiences. Bisexuals were also evaluated as less agreeable and less conscientious." Psypost
Tumblr media
Lisa Palmer, Santa Clarita Diet
"Though LGBT+ representation in the media has been improving in recent years, it is still rare to see positive portrayals of bi characters on television. Characters are usually assumed to be either gay or straight, depending on which characters they are interested in romantically. Even if a character is portrayed as being attracted to both male and female characters, they rarely identify as bi, instead claiming to “not need labels.”
"Bi characters are typically villains, promiscuous characters, or untrustworthy." Soapboxie
Tumblr media
Nick Scratch, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
"A common and inaccurate stereotype is that all bisexual people do not want to be, or cannot be, monogamous. It is inaccurate and harmful to imply that bisexual people are categorically more “promiscuous” than others. People of all sexual orientations can be monogamous for some or all of their lives, or they can choose other types of relationships. This decision is entirely separate from one's sexual orientation." GLAAD Media Reference Guide
Tumblr media
Klaus Hargreeves, The Umbrella Academy
"Pansexual people are [also] commonly faced with [this] stigma, fuelled in part by some people's belief that they lead hypersexualized lives. This infers that pansexual people are more likely to cheat and be promiscuous because they are "available to everyone."
"This misconception has led some people to assume that pansexual people are wanting to engage in any and all sexual activities, negating the need for sexual consent." Very Well Health
Tumblr media
Irene Adler, Sherlock
"The hypersexualization of the LGBTQ community has taken many forms. Not only are gay men and transgender women framed as sexual predators, but lesbians are objectified and fetishized by straight men, and bisexual and pansexual people are assumed to be constantly sleeping around." The Under Ground
Bisexuality on screen is used to indicate sexual experience and promiscuity. This feeds into the misconception that bisexuality is used as a way to appear more attractive and "bisexual people [are] just attention-seeking nymphomaniacs – or that bisexuality was, in the words of Carrie Bradshaw, “Just a layover on the way to Gay Town.”" Fashion Journal
Tumblr media
Margot Tenenbaum, The Royal Tenenbaums
"The way its [bisexuality] been commodified, that was always going to happen… there’s a whole sort of discourse around bisexuality, its exotic… that bohemian angle, it masks the actuality of being a bisexual person even in this day and age." University of Huddersfield
Bisexuality is used to add to the mysteriousness of an already mysterious character. It's not undisclosed for privacy; it's hidden to feed into a "not like other girls / guys" trope.
Tumblr media
Willow Rosenberg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer
"Bisexuals talk about “coming out twice"—once as gay or lesbian in a heterosexual world when they acknowledge their attraction to their own gender, and then again when they acknowledge their continuing attraction to the opposite sex." Psychology Today
The common depiction of bisexual myths is one of the reasons bisexuals feel they have to come out numerous times or don't come out at all.
"Three in ten bi men (30%) and almost one in ten bi women (8%), say they cannot be open about their sexual orientation with any of their friends, compared to two per cent of gay men and one per cent of lesbians." Stonewall
Not all visibility is good visibility.

Virgo Energy

Virgo energy analytical, detailed, and meticulous
Virgo stands as a mutable Earth sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication and intellect. Individuals born under the influence of Virgo embody a unique blend of analytical prowess, practicality, and a keen eye for detail. Let us delve into the essence of Virgo energy and explore the distinctive qualities that make Virgos the diligent perfectionists and caring nurturers of the zodiac.
The Grounded Essence of Virgo
As a mutable Earth sign, Virgo is firmly rooted in the tangible world, grounded in practicality, and guided by a deep sense of duty and service. Just as the Earth provides a stable foundation for growth and sustenance, Virgos offer a steady hand and a reliable presence to those around them. Their energy is characterized by a methodical approach, attention to detail, and a desire to improve and refine everything they touch.
Ruled by Mercury
Mercury, the planet of communication and intellect, governs Virgo and bestows upon them a sharp mind, analytical skills, and a thirst for knowledge. Like the swift messenger of the gods, Virgos excel in critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication. They have a natural curiosity and a keen ability to dissect information, making them adept at organizing and categorizing the world around them with precision.
The Perfectionist Nature
One of the defining traits of Virgo energy is their inclination towards perfectionism. Driven by a desire for excellence and a high standard of quality, Virgos hold themselves and others to a meticulous level of scrutiny. They have a keen eye for detail, a strong sense of order, and a relentless pursuit of perfection in all aspects of their lives, from work to relationships to personal endeavors.
Hardworking and Diligent
Like their Earth counterparts, Virgos are known for their strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to excellence. They approach tasks with a methodical mindset, breaking down complex problems into manageable steps and working tirelessly towards achieving their goals. Their ability to focus on the finer details and their willingness to put in the hard work set them apart as reliable and conscientious individuals.
Focus on Health and Wellness
Virgos are particularly attuned to matters of health, hygiene, and overall well-being. They have a keen interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, paying attention to diet, exercise, and self-care routines. Virgos are meticulous about cleanliness and organization, finding comfort and peace in a well-ordered environment that supports their physical and mental health.
The Art of Service
At the core of Virgo energy lies a deep sense of service and a genuine desire to help others. Virgos are natural caregivers, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer practical advice, and support those in need. They derive fulfillment from making a positive impact on the lives of others, whether through acts of kindness, thoughtful gestures, or practical assistance.
Challenges and Growth
While Virgo energy is characterized by its precision, practicality, and attention to detail, it can also manifest as perfectionism, criticism, and a tendency towards self-criticism. Learning to balance their high standards with self-compassion, flexibility, and acceptance of imperfection can help Virgos cultivate a sense of inner peace and harmony.
Tumblr media
Virgo energy invites us to embrace the art of precision, perfection, and practicality in our lives, while also nurturing a sense of service, care, and attention to detail. By embodying the qualities of Virgo – diligence, analytical skills, perfectionism, and a focus on well-being – we can cultivate a sense of order, purpose, and fulfillment in our daily lives.

[“While “essential workers” in the poultry industry were made to feel dirty, nonessential workers in fields like finance and computer engineering—the “people with laptops”—were sheltering in place, more distant from what transpired in industrial slaughterhouses than ever before.
Thanks to FreshDirect and Instacart, consuming meat no longer even requires coming into contact with a deli butcher or grocery clerk. With a few taps on a keyboard or the swipe of a screen, consumers can get as much beef, pork, and chicken as they want delivered to their doors, without ever having to think about where it comes from. And yet, as the popularity of bestselling books like Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals attests, a lot of Americans do think about this. In recent years, more and more consumers have begun to carefully scrutinize the labels on the packages of the meat and poultry they buy. The ranks of such consumers have grown exponentially, paralleling the rise of the “good food” movement, which promotes healthier eating habits and reform of the industrial food system.
Although the movement is, in Pollan’s words, a “big, lumpy tent,” composed of a broad coalition of advocacy organizations and citizens’ groups that sometimes push for competing agendas, one of its aims is to persuade consumers to become more conscientious shoppers and eaters. Among those who put this idea into practice are so-called locavores, who buy food directly from local farms, ideally from small family-run enterprises that embrace organic, sustainable practices: ranchers who raise grass-fed cows that never set foot in industrial feedlots; farmers who sell eggs that come from free-range chickens reared on a diet of seeds, plants, and insects rather than genetically engineered corn and antibiotics.
Locavores engage in what social scientists call “virtuous consumption,” using their purchasing power to buy food that aligns with their values. The movement appeals to the growing number of Americans who want to feel more connected to the food they eat and to the people who raise it, with whom locavores can interact directly at farmers markets or through community-supported agriculture programs. It is a captivating vision, and the benefits of eating locally grown food—which is likely to be more nutritious, to come from more humanely treated animals, and to be better for the environment—are manifold.
But locavores have some blind spots of their own, most notably when it comes to the experiences of workers on small family farms. As the political scientist Margaret Gray discovered when she set about interviewing farm laborers in New York’s Hudson Valley, the vast majority of these workers are undocumented immigrants or guest workers who toil under abysmal conditions, often working sixty- to seventy-hour weeks for dismal pay. “We live in the shadows,” one worker told her. “They treat us like nothing,” said another. In her book Labor and the Locavore, Gray asked the butcher on a small farm why so few of his customers seemed to notice this.
“They don’t eat the workers,” the farmer told her.
“He went on to explain that, in his experience, his consumers’ primary concern is with what they put in their bodies,” Gray wrote, “and so the labor standards of farmworkers simply do not register as a priority.”]

Meet Desmond Doss, a soldier from the United States who fought in WW2, becoming famous for his pacifism during the war.
Desmond Doss counted as a conscientious objector, meaning someone who refuses to join the military or bear arms in the name of their conscience and own morals. It is most usually someone who doesn't want to hurt others.
For Desmond Doss this was because of his religion, a subgroup of Christianity known as the Seventh Day Adventist Church, which pursued pacifism.
Normally the United States would send conscientious objectors straight to jail, but there was a law covering an exemption for religious beliefs.
Desmond Doss became a medic instead, but was bullied by his fellow soldiers ruthlessly, especially for his diet which was also different due to his religion.
In the end Desmond Doss would be deployed in Japanese territory, and become a famous medic. The soldiers who hated him got over it after he saved their lives. His actions at hacksaw ridge were most famous.
He saved 75 men at hacksaw ridge alone, using a makeshift pully and gurney system, despite being shot four times while doing so.
Desmond Doss was awarded many medals, and lived to be 87, passing in 2006.

Chapter 5 of Scorpio is finished! Can be read here or on AO3. Pokerus AU belongs to @monsoon-of-art.
“A society driven mainly by selfish individualism has all the potential for sustainability of a collection of angry scorpions in a bottle.”
Dawn’s muscles ached from her morning exercises and she wasn’t even halfway finished yet. A gutted basculin on a skewer sat next to the fire as she practiced her blade movements with Chip while waiting for breakfast to cook.
The former human thought she had improved greatly over the past month with her daily practice, but she was nowhere near as proficient as the naturally born dewotts. Her grip on her shell blade was firm but not tight and she was always conscientious of its location when not in use, able to draw and brandish it at a moment’s notice. It finally felt like an extension of herself rather than a dangerous burdensome tool, but her sparring partner always had her drills and exercises completed long before her.
At least she could catch and eat her own food without crying or throwing up. It finally got through to her that a streamlined dewott’s body didn’t need to paddle with its arms like a human and it left her hands free for hunting or defence. Eating her catches raw still never sat right with her, let alone alive like the other otter pokémon. Even if she had somewhat come to terms with how her teeth could crush or cut off something vital until her prey stopped moving, it faintly felt horrible every time.
Dawn wasn’t sure her progress would be enough for her to survive on her own during the upcoming winter and the anxiety kept her up countless nights. Far too picky and reserved, she often depended on her new compatriots generously sharing portions of their meals she could bring herself to cook and eat. A Hisuian winter would strip away most of the berries and edible plants she had been supplementing her diet with. Dawn couldn’t afford to be so choosy for too much longer; the daylight hours were getting shorter and a chill was setting into the mornings and evenings.
She returned to her blade exercises with a renewed vigour, following Chip’s lead. It was better than last time, but Chip still completed the drill several seconds before her. Seconds that would be forever in a real battle.
The wiry dewott still made a noise of approval at her progress and Dawn figured she should check on their basculin. The fins and tail were turning black around the edges, but it could use a several more minutes by the fire.
Dawn turned around to see a mischievous gleam in the other dewott’s eyes as she dropped low to the ground, giving her several seconds to react to Chip launching herself at the former human. The girl was ready for the playful bout and they both went down, tumbling and wrestling on the sandy ground.
The wild dewott was clearly the stronger of the two, but Dawn met her grappling with practiced escape artistry from danger and buneary kicks until she was forced to let go. A lack of any moves or genuine blows could have told anyone this wasn’t a serious attempt at throwing down and the generous pauses were giving the former human a fighting chance.
An older sibling experienced in roughhousing turned what could have been painful bites into gentle nips that didn’t even come close to the skin through thick fur. Dawn laughed as she wriggled out from beneath Chip’s attempt at a pin and shoved her back over with her shoulder.
The other otter stumbled backwards before getting into a martial stance as she drew one of her shell blades, bouncing on her heels.
“Oh, you want me to kick your butt for you?”
Dawn grinned as she drew one of her own to meet the challenge. Chip didn’t fall for the taunt and merely gestured for her to make the first move.
A short arm movement with no follow through was meant to fake her out, but she didn’t flinch as Dawn went for a feint. Chip read her intentions and parried her strike effortlessly, giving her several seconds to prepare for the retaliation.
Her movements were broad and clearly telegraphed as they traded blows, the same as when she sparred with her brother. Maybe she saw Dawn as another little sibling in need of encouragement, but she could never consider herself as such. Whatever she had to do to survive and no matter what she told herself, deep down she would never be a wild pokémon.
A speck of pale yellow high upon a cliff was visible out of the corner of her eye before it disappeared in a flash of violet. She snapped her head in its direction, wondering if she imagined what she thought she saw before a watery missile of a dewott slammed into her.
The aqua jet knocked her flat on her back and she looked up at a shell blade pointed to her face, Chip’s foot planted on her chest to make a point about not paying attention during a battle. Dawn felt a mixture of embarrassment and annoyance as the wild dewott shook her head and tsked at her sparring partner being so careless. She tried to get up with no success; Chip had too much leverage and she waited for the former human to admit defeat before putting her blade away and offering a hand.
Dawn accepted and Chip hoisted her back onto her feet, the two dewotts soaked again after finally drying off from the morning’s hunt. It was about time to check on the basculin again and they could dry off by the fire, but they’d probably be going swimming again later anyways.
“Such is life for a water type.” Dawn reminded herself.
The roasted fish’s skin was golden brown and crispy with a delicious smell coming from it. Chip hovered nearby as Dawn picked apart her meal, happily accepting any part she didn’t want. The wild dewott loudly chewed through pieces of meat filled with bones with her mouth open as Dawn thought back to the pokémon she briefly saw; she could have sworn it was an abra. The former researcher idly wondered what one could have been doing so far east. They didn’t live anywhere near the Cobalt Coastlands.
--------------------------------------
Dawn carefully chipped serrations into one of her shell blades with a heavy rock that was whittled down to a point for such delicate work, just as her own dewott had shown her how to do a long time ago. The frequent maintenance kept the blade sharp and a serrated edge was far more durable.
Lian probably could have spent hours explaining how that worked and what stones were best for what tools before getting sidetracked into a discussion about Lord Kleavor’s axes or something. Dawn smiled to herself at the thought before remembering he was still out there with the rest of the wardens, enraged, delirious and in pain. Still patrolling their old homes and carrying out actions they performed as humans without understanding why.
They barely ate and accumulated countless injuries, but never died when starvation or infection should have killed them. The diseased wardens seemed quasi-immortal, though logically there must be a point where their bodies couldn’t handle anymore.
W hat a miserable way to go.
She pushed those thoughts aside and refocused on her shells, wanting to finish before it got too dark. The two samurotts were resting outside their den where the remains of the forest met the sand, Chip already asleep in the underground burrow. It felt too crowded with three adolescent otters and two alphas, even when the nest was extended with fortifying branches.
Fluffy was far too wound up to go to sleep anytime soon and was clambering over his tired parents, squeaking and whining for attention. They were making a point of ignoring him until he got bold enough to bite Rose on the forearm, getting him hoisted and lightly tossed with a half-hearted snarl that didn’t deter him.
Such behaviour may have seemed juvenile, and it was, but the dewott was close to mature enough to strike out on his own. Dawn wouldn’t be surprised if Chip decided she was ready to fend for herself and just took off in the middle of the afternoon one day.
The former human was nowhere close to a self sufficient adult and she was running out of time. She suspected the two dewotts would have been left to take care of themselves had it not been for the rift. Many pokémon were behaving strangely; staying in their dens unless absolutely necessary, avoiding seeking out mates, or ignoring traditional migratory routes. The samurotts likely wanted to keep an eye on them for a little longer with everything that was going on.
A large shadow silently passed overhead and Fluffy stiffened before darting into the burrow, Briar and Rose suddenly alert. The shadow was possibly a hungry staraptor they hadn’t heard approach, willing to try and snatch up a dewott right in front of its parents now that pickings were getting slim. Alternatively, it could have been one of the wardens, although Mai and Ingo were never that silent.
Dawn gripped the shell blade she was working on tightly until the shadow’s owner made another pass and a white bodied pokémon with red and blue markings came into view. The samurotts relaxed when they saw it was just a togekiss, but Dawn’s eyes widened at the unmistakable cap and large travel pack.
It was Volo! He was scanning the area for something and seemed to have found it when his eyes met hers and gracefully touched down. The alphas tilted their heads in his direction out of mild curiosity, wondering what business he had.
“Found you at last! I was looking everywhere for you, simply beside myself with worry.”
A feeling of apprehension settled in her stomach at the knowledge that she would have to explain that she had no interest in the merchant’s relic hunt or what the rest of the Survey Corps were doing.
“It just wouldn’t do to lose one of my best customers so I took it upon myself to search for you. And you’re quite fortunate to have found such excellent caretakers.“
Dawn bristled at the condescension in his words and the assumption she needed to be looked after like some helpless kid. Like being one of the most knowledgeable and skilled trainers in the region and a champion that faced off against hardened criminals accounted for nothing.
Well, he wasn’t wrong. A pokémon journey taught you many thing, but long term survival in such hostile wilderness was a whole different ball game.
She did need their help. From getting enough food to finding shelter, she was struggling to acclimate to her harsh reality and a bleeding heart wildly out of her depth.
But not for long. She’d learn all the necessary skills and purge the naivety and weakness holding her back. Until she was as mercenary and hard hearted as the samurotts that didn’t need anyone’s charity.
So why did the idea of just telling the merchant to take a hike feel so daunting?
“Do you know where the rest of the Survey Corps are?” she asked, feigning politeness. “They should have left Jubilife with all of the pokémon by now.”
“Of course I do, I wouldn’t be much of a merchant if I didn’t keep up on current events.”
He puffed out his chest feathers with the remark.
“They’re all lying low in a far away corner of Hisui along with the pokémon and any other odd survivor. Completely safe from the clan leaders and their wardens. The owner of the retreat kindly granted us somewhere to stay and her invitation is extended to you too, of course.”
So they had found some small nugget of civilization and would no doubt expect her to return to business as usual. Put her life in danger for basic necessities that could be taken away on a whim.
She could already imagine the shocked and dismayed looks on their faces at her refusal, the demands for explanations and arguments. Anxiety squirmed in her stomach at the thought of being stuck defending her choice from the remainder of the Survey Corps. Dawn would have to remain firm here to avoid such a confrontation or see if she could find some way to weasel her way out of joining Volo.
“It’s no palace, but it can serve as a decent base of operations and it certainly beats being raised by mightyenas,” he said, giving a pointed look in the direction of the den.
“I’ll be sure to say thanks...”
“You had us all quite worried, but there will be plenty of time to catch up on the way over.”
He extended a wing behind her back to guide her along, but she ducked out from under his feathers to stand her ground. There was no clever way out of this and it was now or never.
“No, I’m staying here.”
“I’m sorry?” Volo did a double take, unsure he heard her right.
“I said ‘no.’ Everyone that gives me a place to stay wants me to do dangerous chores for them and they can just take it away for no reason. If I’m going to have to put my life at risk, I don’t want to rely on anyone but myself.”
A dark look flitted across his face, similar to when a pokémon was using nasty plot, but it vanished just as quick. He let out an exaggerated sigh of defeat as he turned away.
“I see. Well, it should at least put the rest of the Galaxy Team’s minds at ease to know you’re alive. But I just can’t stop thinking about the wardens suffering out there.”
The merchant stole a glance back to check if his words had the desired effect, but Dawn remained impassive.
“Warden Ingo showed up in Hisui one day with no memories, just like you. Do you suppose there are people looking for him?”
Dawn felt a prickling guilt battling against her own feelings of betrayal. It wasn’t Ingo’s fault any of this happened and he couldn’t be held responsible for what happened in Lady Sneasler’s den, no matter how hurt she felt.
”Such a sad fate and they’d never even know what happened to him.”
The girl wondered many times where the warden came from and who he left behind. If his family was still looking for him. She strongly suspected he was from the same time period as her and it was why she promised to take him back with her. In order to keep her promise she was prepared to track down and fight whatever legendary she had to, but everything since then had left her feelings so muddled and her conscious so conflicted.
“Excuse us, but would you mind if we borrowed her for a moment to speak in private?” Rose stepped forward to ask.
Despite the politeness, it wasn’t really a request. Volo’s own affliction turned him into an alpha himself, but he looked small next to the samurotts, barely coming up to chest height.
“Not at all.”
The togekiss made a brief flight a short distance away that wasn’t really out of earshot.
“What do you think I should do? I want to help the wardens, but I don’t want to risk my life for people that can just kick me out if they feel like it.” Dawn asked, hoping Volo wouldn’t overhear her panicked whispering.
“What if I die trying to get the rest of the plates. What if the plates don’t do anything and they blame me again?”
“Frankly, I think the Nobles’ servants are beyond saving and they’re fools for not putting them down,” Briar said.
The former human couldn’t decide if she felt relieved or disappointed by his response.
“So you think I should stay with you?”
“We’re saying only you can decide that,” Rose clarified. “Neither of us really understand why the Nobles go to such lengths to protect those human towns. They’re certainly powerful enough that they don’t need a human to serve them, but I suppose they care about them in the same way most pokémon care about their own pack or offspring.”
“If I may be completely honest, I doubt you’ll survive the winter on your own,” Briar added.
Her insistence that she’d thrive on her own had been battling against a contrary anxiety at the back of her mind, an anxiety she didn’t fully allow herself to consider. But the samurott just went and confirmed what she feared deep down; that she wasn’t cut out for this and would die out here. Dawn felt like she was just a child playing pretend at being a hardened survivalist and looked down, crestfallen.
“So I don’t really have a choice.”
The alpha leaned down, his eyes surprisingly soft and wide with understanding.
“You always have a choice. The ability to depend on your blade and yourself is what makes those choices meaningful. But neither path is going to be easy.”
Rose gave a faint smile of encouragement.
“The best thing you can do is choose what matches your beliefs, so what do you value?”
Dawn shook her head. “I don’t know anymore. Right now I just want to survive.”
“Then what gives you the best odds of survival?” Briar asked.
She stopped to ponder the question. All the times she thrived in modern Sinnoh and ancient Hisui were when she had pokémon by her side and was able to plan and strategize. When there was hot food and decent bedding to go back to and people to fall back on if things got dicey.
Was spite really worth it?
She couldn’t imagine carrying on like this. Maybe she should just swallow her pride and go crawling back, do whatever they wanted for a roof over her head.
“No,” Dawn decided quickly.
She would be willing to work for her keep if she had to, but she would not go back out there when no one else had to. Perhaps they wouldn’t kick her out for being unable to solve all their problems this time. At the very least she could get her pokémon back; it would be a relief to have them by her side if she had to move on.
“I’ve always been at my best when I have a group of pokémon to work with. I’m better at solving a problem by understanding their strengths and weaknesses with teamwork than hunting or fighting myself.”
The patriarch bowed his head.
“Then there’s not much more we can teach you.”
A familiar ringtone came from the hollow tree stump she had stashed all of her old belongings in, her Arc phone updated with where she should head next. She retrieved her satchel and the phone within it, glad she hadn’t pitched it into the sea like she’d been sorely tempted to do.
Dawn returned to the samurott pair, her eyes watering as gratitude welled up from inside her. Her own hardships didn’t have to be their responsibility, but they decided to include her in what they chose to care about.
“Thank you for everything.”
The samurotts nodded silently before plodding back towards their den. There wasn’t really anything else that needed to be said to a dewott ready to leave the nest. Dawn put on her scarf and headkerchief as she ran down the mixture of ash and sand towards Volo, who was busy pretending he wasn’t trying to eavesdrop.
“Oh, have you changed your mind?”
The girl merely adjusted her satchel in preparation for the journey.
“I’m ready to go.”
“Excellent! I knew you’d come to your senses.” Volo lifted off and flew shortly above the charred remains of the forest. “If you’ve finished saying your goodbyes, we can get there early enough to manage a good nights sleep.”
Dawn looked back over her shoulder for one last look at the den before following the merchant to wherever this mysterious retreat was.

This is what normalization actually is. Little kids watching the same show likely wouldn't notice this as unrealistic, because all the shows they watch show characters being conscientious about helmets as a normal and unremarkable thing that everyone does (on purpose, to set a good example for the audience), coupled with a ton of messaging in real life about how everyone should always wear their bike helmets. TV shows, along with the real life education, effectively normalize bike helmets for children.
You can see how this is not the same thing as fiction for adults depicting something everyone already knows is bad in real life, even when it's depicted positively.
--
Normalization is certainly a real thing, yes. The Financial Diet or one of those youtube channels on financial literacy has a whole rant on Sex & the City normalizing credit card debt for young women, and it was a fair point.
People just apply a perfectly reasonable concept to silly contexts, as always.

TMI post but
the past several months have been so bizarre hormonally
i've been getting my period about every two months, which is a long interval for me. endless recurring breakouts in the same spots. a feeling of "false ovulation," like i go through a few days where my body displays all the usual signs of ovulation but my period doesn't come within the next two weeks after that. and then with those phases and with actual ovulation, i get a super intense rush of emotion, i get overexcited by everything and have an outpouring of energy and feel attracted to pretty much every guy i meet.
the skipping periods i thought could be just be due to sharing a coworking space with a lot of other young women but idk if there's anything else going on. i've been very conscientious about removing toxins and endocrine disruptors from my diet, personal care/hygiene products, and environment and consuming loads of nutrient-rich food every day for the past 6-8 months so it seems weird that i should have a hormonal flare-up now. unless my body is rewiring itself in response? lol. bouts of stress have historically manifested in very noticeable physical ways for me, but that doesn't normally happen for four months straight! a mystery!

I eat meat but so many of my friends are vegetarian or vegan that I’m constantly accumulating vegetarian recipes and have tried so many meat and dairy alternatives that it’s like I could probably go vegetarian and have a diet that’s as healthy as my current one but I feel I’d rather support local farms and be conscientious about my meat and dairy consumption rn

hi aj! i have a question. how do you think sara is about being a vegetarian? like at first i thought she just stopped eating meat in general and still ate eggs and drank milk and maybe ate fish (i don't know how far my headcanon goes haha) anyway and i read fics that sometimes are like that and other times she's full vegan. what do you think about that?
hi, anon!
while i can very much understand why some authors might choose to write sara that way—especially given that jorja fox has often identified herself as a vegan or "aspiring vegan" in her press—though she never says as much explicitly, sara's diet on the show in canon strongly suggests that she is a vegetarian but not a vegan.
sara becomes a vegetarian after the events of episode 01x10 "sex, lies, & larvae."
after that point, we see her:
eat sea bass (i.e., fish) in episode 01x15 "tables stakes"
eat pancakes* (which are typically made, unless specifically using a vegan recipe, with both milk and eggs) in episode 01x23 "strip strangler"
eat an egg salad sandwich in episode 02x06 "alter boys"
eat muffins (which are typically made, unless specifically using a vegan recipe, with both milk and eggs) in episode 06x05 "gum drops"
eat yoplait yogurt (i.e., a milk product) in episode 07x22 "leapin' lizards"
* since many vegans are also conscientious of potential cross-contamination issues, it is noteworthy that these pancakes come from a greasy spoon diner, meaning they are presumably prepared on the same flattop griddle where meat products like bacon and hamburgers are also grilled, and yet sara doesn't seem to care.
she also, for what it's worth, doesn't appear to have an issue with wearing/using leather, as both her prodigious jacket collection and the furniture in her and grissom's condo attests.
since vegans typically don't eat or make use of any animal-derived products—including fish, eggs, milk, leather, etc.—then sara can't be a vegan.
to me, the idea of sara being a vegetarian but not a vegan tracks with her motivations for becoming a vegetarian in the first place: she is, after spending the night watching grissom's decomposing pig experiment, too grossed out by the thought of meat to ever eat it again. she also, as an animal lover, doesn't like the idea of the slaughter industry. however, she will still eat animal products (such as milk, eggs, honey, etc.) that don't require slaughterhouse animal deaths for their production. she will also eat fish because they're not slaughterhouse animals.
my guess—which i have no way to substantiate—is that, given her concern for animal welfare, she is probably conscientious about making sure the animal products she consumes are ethically sourced when possible.
so when she buys eggs at the supermarket, she probably makes sure they come from free-range chickens or whatever.
however, she probably also can't afford to be too picky in that regard, as, as a csi, she oftentimes has no choice but to eat whatever food is fast/convenient/available during her shifts—hence why she's also willing to get an egg salad sandwich, made from just regular ol' bulk-farmed eggs, from the deli when needs be.
whether or not she has has any health considerations that factor into her opting for vegetarianism over veganism, we don't know.
for example, people with chronic anemia sometimes find it difficult to maintain a strict vegan diet.
we also don't know if and/or to what extent grissom ever adopts a vegetarian diet along with sara once they get together.
anyway, like i said up top, i can understand why some authors might choose to write sara as being vegan (and don't at all find the idea to be ooc for her, particularly given her deep love for animals). however, i think show canon fairly strongly implies she is more likely a vegetarian who still has some animal products in her diet.
thanks for the question! please feel welcome to send another any time.

Effective Natural Remedies for Diabetes
Monitoring and Maintaining Glycemic Levels
Monitoring and maintaining glycemic levels is a cornerstone in the management of Natural Remedies for Diabetes, while supplementary to mainstream diabetes care, should be incorporated conscientiously. Regular tracking of blood glucose levels is imperative for assessing the effectiveness of any natural intervention. Foods with low glycemic index such as whole grains, legumes, and most fruits, when consumed as part of a balanced diet, may aid in a gradual, steady absorption of sugar, thereby preventing spikes in blood glucose. Additionally, natural supplements like cinnamon extract and alpha-lipoic acid have been researched for their potential in glycemic control. However, it is crucial to navigate these remedies under expert supervision to avert any interference with prescribed diabetic medications and to fine-tune the approach tailored to individual health metrics.
