Ever since I was 10 I coped with my intense emotions of frustration and sadness by maladaptive daydreaming about my OC who was more overpowered than a mary sue and travelled to different dimensions to kick ass and eat people alive.

At some point in my senior year of high school I had an entire cohesive universe going in my head where I was in college in New York with all of my favorite characters. I was basically the campus cryptid and did weird shit all the time and no one knew it was me

At some point the daydream was so real to me that I couldn’t remember what things had actually happened in real life and what were from my mind. It made me so distressed to know that my world wasn’t actually real that I had to talk to my therapist about it for like. a month

wait wait wait wait wait wait WAIT. i know true love’s kiss brought giselle back to life, so they both KNOW they love each other, but who actually said it first???

okay, so I've gone through many stages with this particular headcanon, and it's kinda fun looking at how my mind has changed over the last year and a half.

So, when I first started like. writing down my headcanons, which led to me writing fics, I was having them say "I love you" from the jump. At the time I just felt like it made sense because, well, his kiss saved her, so they already know they're in love, yk? And in that verse, it was Giselle who said it first, and Robert was a bit flustered, but said it back, because even though they hadn't known each other long, he still felt that love (which is such a strange thing for his logical little mind to wrap itself around, as is the case with many Giselle-related things)

But the more I thought about it, the more I was like. hm. no, I don't like that, actually, because yes, they know the love is there, but they don't know each other. There was still so much to discover about each other, and who they really were, so, I changed it.

Giselle was still the one who said it first, and I can't remember the exact timeframe for which it happened, but I do know she says it a bit quicker than I suppose most people would. Them moving at odd, sometimes fast, and sometimes slow, paces just makes sense to me. They essentially fell in love over the course of a day, nothing about how they move is ever going to be normal, and that's why I love them, your honor.

Anyway!!! In that headcanon, as I said, Giselle says it first, and it was during a very casual moment. Robert and Giselle love cooking together, it's a big bonding activity for them, especially when they're getting to know one another, and that's when it happened. She was watching him quietly chop vegetables, and it just. Slips out. And Robert got flustered, but also couldn't hold back his smile, and said it back, and then Giselle gives him a soft, sweet kiss, and it was very warm, and fuzzy.

Thinking about that headcanon again, I actually still really like it, and can picture it so perfectly in my mind that I almost don't want to say I've changed my mind, buuuuuuut, I recently(ish) did, because, at some point, I decided that I actually really love the idea of Robert saying it first.

In my mind, Giselle makes a lot of the first moves. She's the one who initiates kissing first, she grabs his hand to hold, and swings her arms around him for a hug. She's the one who asks if she can sleep in his bed, and asks about cuddling (which, shameless plug, but I think this fic (x) is my favorite I've ever written,,,, I revisit it so much)

And that's not because Robert doesn't want to do those things, he just isn't a physical person when they first meet, so he didn't make the first move a lot. And he knows Giselle's still new at dating, so he doesn't want to seem too forward, or accidentally rush her.

Anyway, my point is, because I headcanon that she made the first move so often back then, I started thinking, gosh, I would really like Robert to take the "I love you" step first. It's too obvious for it to be Giselle !!! It simply must be Robert !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SO, Robert is the one who says it first !!!

I wrote a very, very rough draft of it, but basically the idea is that it happens when they're on one of those little boats in Central Park. She's just enjoying the world around them, and Robert, he can't take his eyes off her. He's got the silliest, sappiest, dopiest smile on his face as he looks at her because he's just so very in love !!!!! And then Giselle notices him staring, and teases him about it, and his response,,,, he doesn't even realize he says it, but he just murmurs out an "I love you" and the world freezes around them. It finally dawns on him what he just blurted out, and Giselle's heart is racing, her face is bright red, and Robert starts blushing too, and stammering a bit (I love making that man flustered, it really is my favorite thing) and she finally just quietly asks, "You do?" and he nods, and won't look at her, and then Giselle launches herself across the boat, swinging her arms around him, nearly tipping said boat over, and knocking Robert backwards in the process.

He hits his head on the bottom of the boat, which makes Giselle panic, and she was already crying a bit because she's a very emotional person, and her boyfriend just said he loves her, but also now he's hurt, and Robert's just staring at her with hearts in his eyes because he loves her !!!!!!!!!!!!! SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It all still happens a bit sooner than most people say "I love you" (like maybe a month?) because, as I mentioned, they move at odd paces. it's just the robselle way.

And, uh, yeah. it's a rough draft... I hope the author finishes it some day.

Also, after that first I love you, man, they cannot stop saying it. I like to think, in the past, Robert was probably one of those people that would say things like "what's the point of saying I love you so many times lol?" but with Giselle, he is absolutely saying it a million times a day. like he gets it now, he understands why one might say it over, and over, and over again, because if he doesn't say it over, and over, and over again, well,,, the world might just end :(

Regarding your really interesting post about whether or not people share with others what they do in phandom: another potential factor is when they joined fandom! If earlier in life, when kids called you cringe for it, maybe it’s more of an instinct to hide fandom activities. If later in life, particularly as you’re learning how to embrace your inner cringe, maybe the instinct to hide fandom activities isn’t so ingrained.

I entered fandom pretty late, and started embracing my inner cringe pretty early, so I find it easier to talk to irl folks about phandom activities I do. I’ve never really had an irl partner, tho, so I wouldn’t know what the barriers to sharing phandom activities would feel like then

That is true! As I've been reading all the (fantastic) responses, I think also a lot of it has to do with like. Your personality and who you hang out with.

If you're an outwardly, unapologetic nerdy person who, as you put it, embraced their inner cringe eloquently, then you tend to attract people who also have nerdy hobbies who are maybe more into fandom stuff which would make the "i write fanfiction" convo actually not that stressful.

But if you didn't embrace your fandom cringe or if you grew up in a time/place where fandom stuff and fanfiction especially was the #1 quickest way to lose all your friends and be a social outcast, then as an adult embracing that cringe is harder, connecting with people who are more unapologetic is harder, and you don't tend to attract those same circles as others.

Not to say that people who aren't engrossed in fandom culture are inherently bad people—I'm literally dating one and all my best friends are also non-fandom types—but it does make that "I like fandom stuff and read/write fanfiction" convo a LOT more stressful.

I have one friend irl who I know draws fanart for a different fandom, and I discovered that by accident, but even then I was too shy to admit that I also was into fandom culture so I just smiled and complimented her art. And now we don't even live in the same state 😭
