Thinking about that bit from Mother 3 where Kumatora defends Duster from his asshole dad and everything that led up to it:

"You know, you shouldn't keep calling your own kid a moron. Because if he really is a moron, he wouldn't understand anyway."

That line hit me hard when I first played through that scene. Rarely do I get genuinely angry at characters in video games, but Wess absolutely infuriated me throughout the chapter. He sets Duster up for failure by telling him "you'll know it when you see it" in regards to the item he's been sent to retrieve, then gets angry when Duster inevitably brings back the wrong thing (to the point of physically breaking said item, which visibly stresses out Duster).

He continually berates Duster the rest of the journey through the castle, calling him a moron and even a failure. When Kumatora steps in to defend Duster, Wess has no response. It's not until Duster does something right in Wess's eyes that he "takes it all back". Even though Duster's more than proved himself by that point, Wess stays hung up on one mistake and will not let Duster forget it.

Duster is not a moron. He's extremely aware of everything his dad says, and understands what he means by it.

And despite supposedly taking it all back, and after his son being missing for three years, he calls him a moron one last time.

It's quite a light insult for a game with so many dark themes, but it's a frighteningly realistic depiction of what some parents are like. Slowly wearing you down with petty insults and mockery until you don't have the confidence to defend yourself. Then give you the barest of compliments when you do something "right".

Dear Past Self

Dear Past Self:

I would ask if you are doing good and all of that regular small talk bullshit, but this isn’t actually a letter—just a thought experiment. It’s not like I don’t know, right? After all, I was there.

Telling you to not be afraid feels a little hypocritical, because I am so terrified of the future. But the things you were scared of, have weakened. They’ve crumbled into storytale beasts, instead of the monstrous titans that kept you up at night. This is very helpful to me now.

I wish I could tell you Mom won’t be upset when you cut your hair or change your name, but she also takes every fact you tell her about your friends, the men at least, and makes a list of people from the best to worst for you to marry. She’ll tell you that you should try to have a kid with a certain person ASAP because they have good genes, but it’s a real pity that he’s not white. (Mom thinks marrying a white person would be marrying up.) But, safe to say, get used to disappointing Mom. She’ll tell you she wishes you did all this later when you already have kids, when your marriage is falling apart anyways, not now. Why would you do this when you’re young and attractive and in the best state to bag a man to breed you and give you money and a house? You will realize that Mom says “when” in the way you do when you talk about “when” you’ll kill yourself. You’ll get used to it.

I want to tell you that most of the impending sense of doom goes away on a very standard dose of meds.

I want to tell you that having your issues be common doesn’t mean that your experiences are invalid. It’s not a sign of your mediocrity. You are not weak for not being able to solve every problem. And on most days, you will win, even if it's still sometimes a struggle.

I want to tell you that you are braver and stronger and more powerful than you think you are, than you could possibly dream of, even if it feels like you are disappearing.

I want to say that there’s a happy ending to what happened to you when you were 16—that they’d get that fucker and throw him in jail or something. But the police will sit you down and start asking you if you really want to do this, seeing as he’s such a nice young man. Shit sucks but you’ll move on. The fear will stop. It still feels terribly unfair at times, and you will want to scream and cry, but it is what it is. It’s probably deeply unhealthy, but anger feels better than fear. At the very least, it lets you breathe.

You will have friends in the future, people that you genuinely like and care about. They’ll like and care for you. Some of them will be people you already know, and others will be ones you haven’t met.

I want you to know that I am so grateful that you choose to live, to be brave and face a new day every single night. And I want you to know that you will see and feel and experience so many great and wonderful things because of it. I want you to know that you get to go to college and skip lectures you shouldn’t skip. You get to stay up on weekends, drink cheap liquor, and laugh with friends. You get to see movies, have sex, watch the sunset, and feel your hands get cold when you run them through the snow. You get to fall in love, and write poetry, and travel. You get to be happy, to be sad, to be everything in between.

What I mean to say is that you will survive. Thank you for that. Sometimes I feel like I’m still learning how to live, but aren’t we all? I can’t help but feel like I’m missing something sometimes, but regardless, I have survived, and I will be here tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS AN OUTDATED VERSION OF THE DOAI CD AU. I WILL GET TO WRITING UP THE NEW ONE EVENTUALLY ONCE I HAVE ILLUSTRATED SOME NEW DETAILS & SUCH.

So…

I made a new AU.

Simply calling this the DOAI CD AU cause that’s how a lot of my AUs are.

So here’s the rundown of the AU I have so far.

Story-wise, Winfrey gets captured by Dr. Lankmann & is used for his asylum. Clyde eventually finds where its partner is, but hesitates to simply charge in & find them with all the security precautions that have clearly been put in place for the lil guy. Ultimately, Clyde decides to do a lil sneaky & surrender itself, knowing it’ll be kept alive for testing purposes.

Once its inside, it finds the perfect time to break out of its confinements to go find Winfrey.

Without spoiling too much since I wanna actually WRITE OUT what happens, all I will tell you all is that Clyde finds Winfrey & escapes with the big guy. With Clyde keeping them on track & pushing them forward to ensure both of their escape, Winfrey doesn’t consume too many people after the incident, pretty much only killing any security that got in their way. Dr. Lankmann is also kept alive, which will quickly become a problem for the both of them once they escape.

After fleeing the asylum, both Veldigun later discover that their existence is becoming increasingly known across the country, thus forcing them to flee from place to place to avoid capture &/or potential death (because even if they COULDN’T die via bullets, neither of them would want the other to take that chance). They find themselves traveling all across the country in a seemingly endless chase from the authorities. Despite this potentially being their new life now, they are simply glad to have each other throughout it.

Additionally, because Winfrey was (mostly) unaffected after escaping the asylum, there was no need for their clothing to be stitched to them directly. Instead, Clyde decides to make Winfrey something a lot more comfortable to wear that can easily be taken off, just like its own orange onesie. This is why Winfrey’s outfit looks so different in the image from earlier.

AH!

As for how these fuckin goobers are written, it goes a lil something like this…

Clyde: Despite the circumstances, Clyde is often quite chirpy & is often the one seen with a smile on its face. It is constantly moving in place, rarely ever standing still. It also tends to find fascination in certain small things, often trinkets & other human junk. It came across the LEGENDARY Captain Quackers during one of its scavenges for said trinkets, & is by far the most prized piece of man-made items it has ever collected.

Despite how adorably silly this version of Clyde is, it is STILL scarily clever. It can quickly formulate a plan & execute it almost flawlessly, sometimes even using some of its various trinkets as a part of said plan (such as a distraction). While it usually id not all that afraid of direct confrontation, under dire circumstances, it will remain in the shadows & carefully think through its actions.

Winfrey: Even when the two are completely safe, Winfrey cannot help but feel concerned, perhaps even a bit paranoid. Everything they do for the both of them, Winfrey does it with care & caution. They used to be so fascinated with the creativity of humans, but after the Asylum incident, all they care about is keeping themselves & Clyde (mostly Clyde) safe. Although, this does not stop them from occasionally indulging themselves by singing a tune every now and again or even playing a little song if Clyde ever finds them an instrument (mainly the violin, of course).

While they are usually quite cautious with their actions, they WILL resort to rampaging their way through a problem if the situation is dire enough. They certainly have the strength to do so at any time, but they will most of the time second guess such a method if it could result in putting themselves or Clyde in unnecessary danger. However, if Clyde is already in danger, that second-guessing goes completely out the window. If it ever came down to the two of them, they would want Clyde to be safe over themselves (& vice versa, which often leads to a few points of conflict).

Before the asylum incident, Winfrey was a LOT more upbeat & playful while Clyde was just a little bit more serious & focused. While Clyde is content being far more energetic & easy going than it used to be, it feels guilty for Winfrey losing a lot of their bouncy personality from the good ol’ days & will repeatedly try to get Winfrey to let themselves enjoy life again. While Winfrey just wants to keep Clyde safe, all Clyde wants is to help Winfrey heal from the ten years of torment that scarred them. However, Clyde has no idea JUST how much that decade has affected Winfrey & how tough it will be for them to feel fully comfortable again…

The other Veldigun ALSO are characterized differently, but I have not fleshed them out all that much yet. Regardless, here is what I have so far.

Klaus: All he cares about is seeing others suffer, not because he feels wronged in any way, but because it genuinely feels euphoric to him. Rarely will he ever eat his victims & only does so when he starts showing signs of starvation. His cruel demeanor also extends to his relationship with his supposed partner Jack, who he often abuses if things do not go his way or if Jack even slightly gets on his nerves. Despite Jack being essential to Klaus, he does not care about his Jack-in-the-box partner in the slightest. If anything, Jack’s death would simply be an annoyance to him.

Jack: Everything is just so damn funny to them, but not in a sadistic way like their partner is. They genuinely cannot help but laugh whenever something even POTENTIALLY humorous occurs, much to Klaus’ displeasure. Despite how their partner treats them, Jack is happy to be used as a living murder weapon. They feel content with their only purpose being to help Klaus. They are well aware of how poorly they are being treated but feels that abandoning Klaus will leave Jack without a purpose, & is too fearful of that reality to take that chance. In other words, they just laugh off the idea.

Both Klaus & Jack have been traveling across the country even before what happened at the Lankmann asylum, but the Veldiguns’ revealed existence has only made it harder for Klaus & Jack to stick around too long. Klaus absolutely blames Clyde & Winfrey for this, & would not be shy of giving them a piece of his mind if they ever crossed paths.

Simon & the Flock: Both live at an abandoned farm somewhere in the country, feeding purely off of the wildlife that would be found there. This is due to Simon having consumed the people that once resided at this residence, gaining empathy for humans & swearing off of ever consuming another human mind ever again. The Flock follows this vow, not because Simon asked it to, but because it understands. Both Veldigun can vividly understand each other without ever uttering a single phrase or gesture. Simon can rarely ever be heard speaking because of this. The two do not bother with the other Veldigun or escaping the authorities. Whatever happens, they will remain pacifistic toward human life & show kindness to others, even to their own detriment.

As for Lankmann…

Well, you’ll just have to wait & see for yourself, won’t you? ;)

hi yeah piggybacking off of my season 4 yugioh post. what the fuck were they feeding the writers.

the animation was inconsistent and often times bad, the plot as a whole was painfully mediocre, and the beginning and end were both slop. but the characterization? best in the series. INSANE. every character was absolutely fucking on point the moment the actual premise of the leviathan and atlantis is not being focused on. mai valentine alone couldve carried this entire season. that’s not even talking about rex and weevil gaining major roles and actually having their characters explored (🤯🤯). not to mention the INSAAAAANE decision to practically role reverse joey n yami. yami being the hotheaded one to not think things through, the one to mess up and put people in danger, the one who has to learn a major lesson. meanwhile joey was out here showing compassion to mai and even rex of all people and making suggestions and plans and keeping levelheaded. WHAT WERE THE WRITERS EATING

These Days We Celebrate / Reconfiguration by Phoebeus

Original synopsis: “Originally a series of canon-compliant stories spanning the six month gap between the defeat of Pegasus and the arrival of Otogi, it now includes a branch-off story that changes the climax of the Millennium World arc and explores what would have happened if Atem had gotten his own body a month prior to leaving for Egypt. [Manga-canon, Puzzleshipping]”

Standout characters/aspects: Yuugi's mom & Honda

Notes: The holy grail. The puzzle fic to end all puzzle fics. Nothing beats it. It aligns almost 98% with my personal headcanons, & the small things we disagree on are contextualized in a way that makes sense in the story. Yuugi's mom is iconic in this story, & my own interpretations of her lean heavily on her portrayal in this series.

Haunted House Sweet Home by InkFlavored

Original synopsis: “Yugi doesn't believe in ghosts. He never has and, up until now, he thought he never would. But when he moves into his new apartment, things start disappearing, doors start slamming, and an ancient crown has it out for him. He's forced to face reality: he's living in a haunted house. But will he be ‘living’ there for long?”

Standout characters/aspects: Feriha (fem OC) has a very small part, but she is integrated in a well-thought-out manner & quite likable.

Notes: This fic takes a lot of normal aspects of ygo like “cursed object” and “troubled king” and gives them a new spin! Bonus points for writing an OC villain who works as well as Hazim does.

Egyptology Exercises / All This We Do in the Name of Ma’at by Nedjemet

Original synopsis: “My attempt at redoing Yu-Gi-Oh with a focus on character development, magic, and historical accuracy instead of card games. While this is technically a series, "All This We Do in the Name of Ma'at" functions as a standalone story. All of the other stories are just in-universe follow ups to show what the characters got up to after the story was over. These shorts largely function as stand alones, too, since Ma'at follows cannon very closely in the important ways. All of the stories are ordered loosely in terms of when they occured. You can read them in any order.

All of the Egyptology is heavily researched and I did my best to get it right. If something is off and you have a source, please send it my way!

All of the stuff in modern Japan has minimal research done and is more for flavor than anything else. I'm going for anime-level accuracy with that, not realism.”

Original synopsis: “Once seven, now three. A broken Pendant, a crumbling empire, and tugging at the seams of reality, hints of a sinister power returning. His faith in destiny strained past breaking, newly-crowned-and-deposed Pharaoh Set makes the questionable decision to try and solve the Millennium Puzzle with magic. As it goes with magic, his efforts are rewarded…but not quite in the way he expected.”

Original synopsis: “Taking place after the events of Season Zero, all the shadow games happened but Yugi never found out he was possessed by the spirit of the puzzle. Now he's an adult, living on his own, and he starts to notice strange and spooky things happening around his apartment. When he sees his own shadow moving Yugi begins to suspect his new place is haunted. But is this shadow spirit malicious or... kinda sweet?

Yami does a bunch of stupidly sweet domestic shit for Yugi to help take care of him. Expect romance, fluff, self-care, and Puzzleshipping shenanigans.”

Standout characters/aspects: Love Yuugi’s urge to provide for Atem, very sweet. I also love the chapter of Like a Stone into a Pond that focuses on Yuugi’s mom’s relationship with Atem.

Notes: This series is sort of YMMV for me. To be entirely honest, the smut gets a little too weird for me in a lot of installments, so I don’t revisit it too often, but the first installment is definitely my favorite, and I love seeing the intimacy between Yuugi & Atem grow while they’re still sharing a body. The 4th installment is my other favorite, as it focuses less on smut and more on character interactions.

Phantom Limb by Killdoll

Original synopsis: “In the hospital after the fire where Yuugi reassembled the Millennium Puzzle, Yuugi and his Other Self have a heart-to-heart.

Alien Tweek rambles under the cut ⬇⬇

Hes called a "Noran" and hates being called an "Alien" because Aliens are actually disgusting looking AND acting creatures from another another planet which is also disgusting. Everything about "Aliens" are disgusting so Craig expects violence when he calls Tweek one. Tweeks planet is called Partial. Partials are a bit futuristic as they have a lot more technology than humans do. Speaking of humans most beings in space hate humans, Norans hating+fearing them the most. Anyway, Instead of pulling his hair he pulls those antennas which turn colors to show his emotion. His teeth are sharp but not sharp enough to be a monster or anything. He has a tail. Yes people he has a tail! His tail is equivalent to a lizards tail so it can grow back if its ever cut off. (Not shown) His eyes are a mix of yellow and green and his tears are like watercolor meaning therell be a different color for each drop. His language (Called ꈼꈼ꒒) is hard to learn, produce, write and understand. Very hard- Unless youre Clyde. (I have a headcannon that Clyde can just accidentally speak lots of languages)

A lot of Mother 1's themes would come across a lot stronger if it got the remake it absolutely deserves, but even with the dogwater NES graphics and simplistic dialogue, meeting Lloyd for the first time is so bittersweet to me.

You go through the school hearing about this kid Lloyd that everyone seems to hate for no good reason, and when you finally meet him on the roof he's in a garbage can. Of his own volition. The fact that spending all his free time at school in a bin is preferable to dealing with his classmates is just... you don't ever see the full extent of the bullying, but the implications are pretty freaking sad.

And the fact he just doesn't trust anyone his age anymore. He's got no reason to believe Ninten wants to hurt him, but he's only convinced once Ninten brings him a bottle rocket to show interest in being friends (thankfully Lloyd's bullies never learned the art of manipulative bullying it seems).

Ninten and Lloyd's friendship is predominantly shown through implication on account of Ninten not really having dialogue, but you can tell how much that one gesture of kindness meant to Lloyd, as he is without question his most loyal friend throughout the journey (a journey Lloyd had no obligation to come on, I hasten to add. And even when he's no longer part of the group that doesn't stop him coming to rescue them).

I know it's just a video game, but like I said in the tags of my post about Duster and Wess, there are people like this out in the world. Both people like Lloyd and the bullies he has to deal with. And people like Ninten, willing to offer even the smallest kindness because they believe people deserve it. Earthbound is full of weird and eccentric characters, but it can be incredibly grounded and realistic when it wants to be.

Idk where that post I made either here or on my main blog about how in the proshoot Katherine keeps sneaking glances at Crutchie's leg in the deli scene went but that's still one of my favourite bits of subtle acting because it really does show she is very inexperienced around these kids. I've got this thing where I'm decently confident in my ability to write canon characters. There are times where I write them to be a little ooc or I lean into the fanon versions a bit.

But I've got a few people I follow on here where if they say a characters is a certain way. Then they are that way.
