You’re telling me there’s a BBC period drama television series with Cillian Murphy and Matthew Macfadyen that I’ve never heard of??

I know that the novel this is based on was written by a man, but the screenplay was written by the man who gave us the Colin Firth 1995 Pride and Prejudice, and these characters are being played by men who are literally written for women, so my question is - how did people survive this???

I want to say ‘it’s the sideburns for me’ but I genuinely just am so floored that this exists. There is no time for jokes.

I guess I know what I’m doing this week, then.

Started watching Peaky Blinders, and I can’t stop comparing Cillian Murphy’s role as Thomas Shelby to his performance as Jonathan Crane in Batman Begins. Cause other than 28 Days Later, which I have like no memory of, that’s the only other movie I’ve ever seen Cillian in.

Tbh, Cillian’s performance as Crane used to make me very uncomfortable. Like he came off as very apathetic with an extremely obvious superiority complex. He pretty much embodies the intelligent psychopath trope in a very obvious way. But, I mean, we’re talking about the same dude who poisons people with a fear toxin to delude them into living their worst nightmares. So if…..I don’t fucking know, ok — Murphy is just creepy as shit in that movie.

He puts out uncanny valley vibes imo with the way he just tries to seem so normal and logical and level-headed when an observer can tell he’s really looking for the best way to trap and dismember you in his torture dungeon.

The fact that Cillian Murphy also happens to be extremely attractive amplifies that imo.

And Thomas Shelby is kinda the polar opposite of Jonathan Crane. Cause even though he’s a murderous crime boss he also seems kind of nuanced in the sense that he genuinely seems to give a shit. Like he has real human emotions and we see him display those emotions and vulnerability on screen. Whereas Crane was just an unreadable mask.

Cillian did an excellent job in Batman Begins at hiding his emotions until he suddenly, subtlety snaps.

So I’m kinda dealing with….Like culture shock right now.

I’m going to make these headcanons if that’s ok 🫶🏼🫶🏼 and i think i got carried away but who cares 😌

Ok so obviously y/n and cillian met in the early 2000s (you can make up how they met)

papa nolan knows that y/n is talking to a boy but he doesn’t know it’s mr. ‘my eyes aren’t even that blue’ so when y/n tells papa nolan that her bf is coming over for dinner, he’s preparing to meet so douche bag who says his favorite movie is pulp fiction or fight club (nothing wrong with that, but the film bros make me want to gauge my eyes out)

anyways, cillian shows up and ofc they get along great <3

after cillian and y/n are now OFFICIAL official obviously the press asks about what papa nolan thinks and if they get along

'Since his breakthrough performance in Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later over two decades ago, Cillian Murphy has become one of the biggest names in acting. Later, Murphy honed his skills with an iconic performance as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders and a series of collaborations with beloved director Christopher Nolan. After appearing in The Dark Knight, Inception, and Dunkirk, he now takes on the starring role of the eponymous Oppenheimer in one of the most anticipated films of the year.

Alongside the Irish actor’s love for cinema, he also harbours a passion for music. In his youth, Murphy sang and played guitar in bands, even meeting his wife at one of his gigs in the mid-1990s. His most promising band was The Sons of Mr Green Genes, named after the Frank Zappa song, which featured Murphy and his brother Páidi. Acid Jazz Records even contacted the duo to offer them a deal, but they declined.

Though Murphy’s gigging days are behind him, music remains a huge part of the actor’s life. During an interview with the Sunday Independent Life Magazine, he stated: “The only extravagant thing about my lifestyle is my stereo system, buying music and going to gigs.” He still plays and writes alone and with friends and was even featured on a recent single by The Coral.

Expectedly, for someone so well-versed in music, Murphy’s taste is varied. Though he presents on the alternative station BBC Radio 6, his taste stretches beyond dad rock. From the early synth-pop of Christine and the Queens to fellow Irish performer Van Morrison, Murphy has littered his interviews and radio shows with wide-spanning music recommendations. We’ve collated a number of tracks he’s shared his love for throughout the years.

Murphy once awarded the title of his favourite band to Radiohead, naming ‘No Surprises’ as the song he wishes he’d written in an interview with NME. He states: “I think they’re the biggest band, who became the biggest band in the world without wanting to be the biggest band in the world. They’re probably my favourite band.”

Murphy also once noted his love for the contemporary Irish band Fontaines D.C. On one of his shows for the BBC, he stated, “I’ve been playing a lot of Irish music, but I am Irish, and there is a great explosion of new Irish music!” He names ‘Liberty Belle’ as one of his favourite tracks from their 2019 debut album Dogrel, but adds, “Every single tune, they’re relentlessly themselves.”

Murphy also shared his love for rapper Kendrick Lamar, noting that DAMN was the first album his 11-year-old son ever purchased. Murphy’s own was The Final Countdown by Europe: “I’m not ashamed of it; it’s a great riff. But Kendrick Lamar… Look, I think he tips it.”

I was too young to see/ be aware of Red Eye when it came out, so have only just watched it for the first time today.

The way I held my breath during this movie 🤌🏽

It was jarringly American in some parts - and I don’t mean Cillian Murphy or Brian Cox’s accents, they were ✨flawless✨ to my non-American ears. It was the writing. Just some of it.

But otherwise no, holy shit, such a good film.

Fuck, Oppenheimer is intense.

I mean, it’s no surprise, given it’s subject matter...but there are several scenes that have nothing to do with the actual bomb itself that are so gripping, I was hanging on every word.

While the movie is three hours long, it doesn’t feel like (except when we were getting close to the end, but that’s because it’s tough to sit in one position for that long)...the pacing it very fast...and since I don’t know much about this period of history, I really had to pay attention, because there is a lot of information being given by so many characters. I think this might be why they chose to cast so many known actors for characters who only appear in two or three scenes. The cast is mostly male, and in the 1940′s, guys tended to look alike...similar haircuts, always wearing suits, etc. It can make it tough to distinguish one character from another...but if you see an actor onscreen and go “hey, it’s Rami Malek!” or ”I didn’t know Tony Goldwyn was in this movie!” it will help you remember who everyone is.

But seriously, the cast list they have for this movie is bonkers:

Cillian Murphy (of course), Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, Tony Goldwyn, Harry Groener, Josh Peck, Alex Wolff, and Gary Oldman! *And this all off the top of my head, I’m sure I missed some*

Robert Downey Jr. is phenomenal. I know we’re a long way from the Oscars, and who knows what is going to happen with the strikes (hopefully the writers and actors getting what they want), but I want him to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Obviously, it’s very early, but I’d be very happy if he won. His performance shows us what we’ve been missing with him playing Iron Man for so long...and he’s great as Tony Stark, but I’m glad he’s able to move on and do more work like this, because damn, he’s good in this movie.

And I have to talk about Cillian Murphy. He carries this movie on his back, and he is fantastic. There’s a lot of scenes where he is just sitting there...thinking...and you are so engrossed.

And I have a little side tangent about him for a sec...about halfway through the movie, someone was speaking offscreen...and the voice sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it...and after a minute I thought “ROBIN WILLIAMS?!” Now, it wasn’t him, of course...it was actually Cillian Murphy...but the vocal choice he made for this movie actually made him sound a lot like older Robin Williams...like from the late 90′s/early 2000′s. It was so uncanny, it actually took me a while to stop hearing it.

Anyway...this movie is fantastic and absolutely needs to be seen on a big screen! The sound design alone is worth the price of admission.
