Alex was standing in front of a mirror, putting the finishing touches on her make-up before getting ready for her date with Nik. She stopped as she heard someone with keys, so she followed the sound and entered the hallway. There, Nik just entered his apartment.
"Hey, Nik, you're back! How do I look?", she asked and welcomed him with a gentle hug.
Nik, on the other hand was in deep thoughts, looked away and didn't even return the hug which made Alex worry as she realized. It's been a year now since the two of them were living together as a couple. They know each other very well. Something is disturbing him, she's definitely sure. Carefully Alex released him from the hug and took a few steps backwards to analyze him. Clenched jaw, staring at the floor, knitted eyebrows, a balled fist,... Yes, his body language revealed it all.
"Hey, Nik, everything alright?"
"Hmm, yeah.", he answered without meeting her chocolate-brown eyes.
"You sure, Nik?"
"Hmm?", he finally looked at her.
"How was the meeting?"
"I'm glad you didn't cause you would've gotten blood all over yourself and we have dinner reservations at 7."
"Oh that... Believe me, I wanted to stab everyone. I wanted to stab them all!!", he angrily replied.
"I love you for supporting me."
"I love you too, Nik.", she giggled which made Nik smile a little. He took a closer look at her.
"Hey, you look beautiful tonight."
"Thanks, Nik. You should get ready too, you know? I can't have a dinner date without my main course which is you, Nik.", she winked at him.
"Someone's in a good mood here."
Raising her eyebrow, Alex moved closer to him and rested her arms on his chest while Nik pulled her even closer. Both looking deeply at eachother's eyes.
"Well, someone has to keep the good mood up when the other one had a bad day.", she answered in a seducive tone and smiled.
"And I like that, rookie. Hey, how about we cancel our dinner reservations and hang out tonight in the bedroom?"
Alex playfully pushed herself away from Nik and turned disappointedly away from him which made Nik wonder.
"Definitely not, Nik. We're going out tonight. I mean when was the last time we went out together on a date? Hmm?", she argued.
"Okay, okay, sorry. I was just enjoying this little moment here."
"Whatever, now hurry and get ready for our date. I'll give you five minutes to get ready. Don't take long.", she commanded which made him chuckle because she's definitly the one who takes longer to get ready than he.
Like she said, Nik entered the bedroom to change clothes without closing the door, hoping Alex would change her mind and spend the night with him in their bedroom. But it didn't happened. After a few minutes, the man entered the hallway where she was waiting for him. But Nik noticed that she was drown in deep thoughts.
"Hey, what's up? Penny for your thoughts?"
"Nothing, actually. It's just you looked so stressed before you entered the apartment, so I hope the date will let you unwind a little. I don't like when you're stressed. Or should we cancel...?"
"No, I'm fine. It's okay. Don't cancel the date, you already dressed up and were so excited for it. I don't want our night to be ruined because of that stupid meeting I had."
"And aren't you excited for our date as much as I am?"
"Of course I am. Spending some time with my beloved rookie is exactly what I need. I need you. Forever. I need you forever. Only you, Alex. I love you. You're my everything.", he leaned closer and both drifted into a passionate kiss. A few seconds later, they parted to look into eachother's eyes.
"And you should know that I love you too Nik. By the way you look great in this black suit." She smiles shyly. Which made his heart beat stronger. For him Alex is such a beautiful person, from the outside and on the inside.
"Hey, Nik, before we enjoy tonight... Care to share what happened before?", she asked him, but he was silent. No answer came out of his mouth. The sadness in his gray eyes told her everything, so she decided to ask him again. Alex wanted to know what bothered her boyfriend.
"Nik, how was the meeting? Is everything alright? You don't have to tell me, you know? It's just..."
"It's okay, I don't mind sharing with you. But you wouldn't like it. It's just... the vampires from New York. I went to Ivy's, so she could connect me with their clan leaders via video call. I'm worried cuz things don't look good there. Soon, the vampires might have a war and... and... Katherine and I might have to join the war too."
"What?!! Why??!! What do nighthunters have to do with vampires? And New York,... that's where Kristin lives too!!! Why didn't you told me before?!! Nik, tell me everything now!", Alex panicked, took a few steps backwards as tears welled up. Gently, Nik cupped her face and leaned into a soft hug to calm her down.
"Hey, hey, relax, calm down! We don't even know for sure if the vampires will have war, okay. Relax, everything will be fine. It's just a theory. Wanna head out now?", he tried to make her feel better and to skip the topic, but Alex noticed.
Even Nik couldn't hide his true feelings, he felt uncomfortable, stressed and scared of what would happen next. Yes, Nik Ryder and scared, because joining a supernatural war is a huge thing where everyone would be concerned. In an unknown place surrounded by unknown dangers and dangerous creatures, away from home, family and friends. For Nik, away from his true love, his rookie, his Alex.
"Nik, we're not going anywhere tonight until you don't tell me everything.", she lightly pushed him away and glared at him.
"Alex, no need to..."
"Nik!!!"
"Well, I... Okay, fine. As a nighthunter, my job is to protect the human world and supernatural world, bring them both into order and serve justice, so that's why Katherine and I have to be there when the vampires will have war, to protect the humans and the innocent ones. And about the video call I just had, I actually called that damn clan leader to complain about their system cuz the NOLA vampires are drivin' me nuts. It's been a few days now and they're committing crimes and murder in our city. The numbers are increasing every week and someone has to do something. But guess what, the vamps from NY are too busy to care of what happens here, because they have their own problems to deal with.", he disappointedly explained to her.
"Wait...Wait, let me get this straight. Soooooo, when you entered the apartment you had an online meeting via video call at Ivy's place and were talking about stabbing a vampire? Huh, mentioning to stab someone during a video call who's not even here in New Orleans?", she asked. He scratched the back of his head and nodded.
Without getting ready for it, Alex crashed into Nik for a hug. He wrapped his arms around her, rested his head lightly on hers and pulled her closer. Her body shaking while silently crying.
"I'm sorry, rook. I'm sorry for ruining our date tonight."
"Nik... Oh, Nik! Why? Can't you decline? We're talking about war, not even any war, a supernatural war. Please, don't... Don't leave me."
"Hey, it's not even decided about if I as a nighthunter have to go. Okay, relax. Maybe I don't have to.", he gave her and himself hope. Everyone knows that he's one of the best nighthunters, so it could be more likely that the best ones will be chosen for this big event, but he doesn't want to think about it or sadden Alex even more.
"Can't... can't you... can't you reject?"
"I have sworn an oath to protect anyone who needs help. The humans will need safety if the vampires try to harm them. Look, the good thing is that most of the vampire clan leaders are on our side and are against war. Everything will be fine. Alex, please, stop crying. It won't change anything if you spill your tears for me."
"Of course, I will spill every tear for you because I love you and I can't live without you. Try to understand, I just can't!!!!", she screamed at the top of her lungs and felt the salty taste of her tears streaming in her mouth as they were endless waterfalls. When she pulled herself away from him, Nik was longing for her.
"No, no, stop... Please stop, I... I don't want this either, but I have no choice. I don't want to think about this right now, please. Please, let us unwind. Only you and me, together. I...", he quickly pulled her closer and his crashed his lips on hers. They kissed each other with pleasure, passion and full of desire. Not wanting anything to come in between. They were afraid to part ways, to lose each other. They were always one. Always.
While kissing both tiptoe around to the other side into the bedroom. Completly lost into the sensation, Nik's hands on her body, his lips now on throat while she lays her hands on his chest which slowly moving lower and lower.
"Are you sure, Alex? Don't let your sadness control you."
"Oh Nik, I love you and all I need is you. Only you. I need you now, Nik."
"Damn, I love you too. You're my queen, my life, my everything and there's no life without you... I can't live without you, I will die.", he confessed and crystalline tears finally filled his eyes too.
"Don't you dare to die, understood? If you die, I will die with you. So promise me, that you won't die, my soldier."
"I promise, I swear on... The hell with that. I swear on us, rook."
"What? On us? Why swear on us?"
"Yeah, I swear on us. Because there isn't anything I believe in more than us and our true love. You and me, forever. Nothing will seperate us, my love."
To be continued...

"I've been searching everywhere about this and let me tell you, it wasn't easy. It is a really rare condition." Ivy pulled a huge antique black book up, setting it on the table, opening a marked page. "Apparently, when Alex was attacked and Amy turned, their full powers were activated."
"And that put us in this freaky Friday situation?" Amy asked.
"Seems like it. Your energies were so strong that, when they were liberated into the world, somehow collided and mixed up resulting in the body exchange."
"Yeah yeah, all this is very interesting Ivy but we need a solution."
"Nik! Don't be an asshole!" He blinked. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't get used to Alex's words coming from Amy's body.
"Well, I've only found one possible solution." Ivy seemed a bit uncomfortable, keeping her red eyes glued to the page in front of her. "And I'm not even sure if it's going to work."
"Spill it, Ivy."
"They have to die again at the same time."
"Absolutely not!" Adrian stood, hitting the table with his palms, livid. "Amy's body is a vampire, if she dies, her body will turn into ash. There's no return from that."
"I agree with the bloodsucker." Nik added. "It is too risky."
"Call me that again and you'll see how much of a bloodsucker I can be." Amy noticed the irritated tone in Adrian's voice.
"I would like to see you try it." Nik responded, smugly.
"Is that so?" Adrian's eyes turned crimson as his fangs appeared above his bottom lip.
"Adrian!" Amy called him, softly holding his hand. Instead of relaxing, like he always does with her touch, he tensed up for a moment. After all, it wasn't really her skin that was brushing his.
"I need a moment." He said as he walked out of the conference room door. "If you’ll excuse me." And he disappeared from their sight. Amy sadly stood too, following him.
"I'm going to go talk to him."
"Take your time." Alex said and Amy nodded.
"Adrian." She found him in the lobby, pacing around, anger and frustration twisting his handsome features. "Just ignore him."
"It's not him that troubles me, Amy." He took off his blazer, throwing it somewhere.
"No?"
"Of course not!" He loosened his tie just a bit, looking annoyed and clearly stressed. "It's that damn idea! The risk that entails it is too great!"
"I'm going to do it." Adrian froze and Amy sat on one of the couches, anxiously biting her bottom lip.
"Amy…"
"If Alex agrees, I want to try it." Unconsciously, she looked down at her hands, noticing, once more, that they weren't her own. Instead, she fixed her stare on Adrian's back.
"It's a terrible idea, Amy. You could die."
"I know. But keeping this up isn't an option."
"It is an option. And an excellent alternative if you avoid death." Amy stood and walked in front of him.
"Look at me." She cupped both sides of his face, forcing his gaze at her. "This isn't me, Adrian and you know it. I feel shallow and incomplete. I can't even look at my reflection." She sadly smiled at him. "Since I came back, you haven't been able to kiss me, not once."
"It's not that I don't want to, it's just…" He hesitated.
"It feels wrong, I know. I’m not blaming you." Amy avoided his eyes, self-consciously. "But I miss it. I miss being a bloodkeeper, being with you, my job, my own face, my body." She blinked fast. "I miss the way you used to look at me. So much it hurts." Adrian pulled her into a comforting hug. "I want to experience being a vampire with you and our friends." She sniffed against his shoulder. "I miss me and my life. That's what makes the risk worth it."
"Okay." Adrian closed his eyes, threading his finger through that hair that felt so different from hers. "If that's your decision, then it's okay. I'll be there for you."
"Thank you." She whispers, her voice cracking.
***
"You didn't call me."
"What?" Alex turned to watch Nik's serious profile.
"When you woke up here, you didn't call me." His tone was indifferent but something similar to hurt resounded behind his words.
"I wasn't sure you would believe me. And…" She noticed that Ivy wasn't on the screen, only the open book was on camera, probably to give them privacy and would return in a moment. "Everything that happened before Thomas' attack was too fresh. Still is."
"Alex, I–"
"No. I said not today." She interrupted him. "You already said what you want. In-depth at that." Alex's voice hardened, getting upset. "I can't nor want to handle that talk right now."
"Okay." Nik crossed his arms over his chest. He stood, walking over to the window that overlooked the lobby, watching Alex hugging Raines. He shook his head. Amy was hugging the bloodsucker, not Alex. Either way, the jealousy he felt was way too strong for his liking. "But at some point, we will need to talk about it." She let out an ironic little chuckle.
"You are not going to decide that." Alex stood too, peeking through the same window. She took a second to observe the scene downstairs. Even though it was strange, to say the least, seeing herself having that intimacy with Adrian, she barely knew the guy, but she was happy for them. Adrian and the others had been very kind to her the past few weeks. "Did you notice it? That something was different?"
"Obviously. But I just thought you were pissed off at me."
She smirked despite herself. "I am pissed off at you." Alex watched how Amy and Adrian separated from each other. How his hand cupped her cheek and she covered it with hers, kissing his palm. How close they seemed. And how much she wanted to feel that way. Her gesture was more serious as her mind remembered the night of Mardi Gras. "You really hurt me."
"I know. I–" Before Nik could say anything else, the door opened and Adrian and Amy walked through it.
"My apologies, are we interrupting something?"
"Nothing that can't wait." Alex went closer to the screen. "Ivy, are you there?"
"Coming!" One second later, she sat in front of the pc.
"Are you certain that that's the only possible solution?" Adrian questioned her, standing by Amy.
"As far as I know."
"But it's impossible." Nik crossed his arm, leaning against the window behind him. "They can't actually die."
"But if we make it seem like they did?" Ivy said, going through another book.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, there's a drug that will stop their vital signs, simulating that they are dead. Maybe that's enough to trigger the change." She read a page while talking. "It is still risky because it can actually kill them but a bit safer than wounding them."
Amy looked at Alex. "I'm up to try it if you are."
"Me too. Where can we find this drug, Ivy?"
"It's more like a potion. You need to make it."
"Can you prepare it in your lab?" Amy questioned Adrian and he nodded.
"Yes, I rebuilt them." Ivy's curiosity perked up, looking excited at him.
"You have a lab? Like a vampire lab? You have to let me see it! I–" Adrian smiled at her enthusiasm before Nik interrupted her.
"Ivy. The potion."
"Yeah, right." She clicked on the pc. "I'm sending you the receipt now." Nik opened it on the screen.
"Mh." Adrian read the recipe attentively. "It's complex, no doubt, but possible. I can have it done probably in one or two days." "So, it's decided," Amy said with the same determination that Adrian had seen before she stabbed Gaius. "As soon as Adrian finishes the potion, we will test the theory."

Meet My MC: Lyra Lexington
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll edit this to make it cuter and more detailed while I play the story but here's what I have so far!
Nicknames: Ly, Little Miss Valedictorian, Doc, Lady, Queen
Born/Raised: Singapore -> New York -> Los Angeles
Books: Ride or Die, Queen B, Nightbound/Bloodbound, The Elementalists as a well-known Historian, and Crimes of Passion I and II (again, I haven't finished all of these books I just thought of this MC on the go)
Face Claim: Alyssa Raghu -> Naomi Scott/shredz55 (Insta)
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: Pansexual
Zodiac: Aquarius
Fashion Style: "Girl Next Door" with a hint of Bohemian Chic
Love Interest: Trystan Thorne
Past Relationships: Logan, Colt Kaneko, Professor Ian Kingsley, Nik Ryder, Violet Hale (OC) Past Flirtationships: Mona, Cal, Vera
Education/Major: BA in History at UC Berkeley; MA in Anthropology and Ph.D in Archeology at Harvard University; Magic Training at Pendergast College of Elemental Magicks
Family:
Great Great Great Great Great Grandmother: Desire and Decorum MC Great Great Great Grandmother: The Unexpected Heiress MC Godparents: Adrian Raines and Evelyn "Evie" Rouge Father(s): Lord Elric; Detective Antonio Lexington (FC: TBD) Mother: Lilavati "Lila" Solaris (FC: Nayanthara) Half-Brother: Tialo Maternal Cousin: My Queen B OC/The Elementalists MC Children (Twins): Amber Marguerite Thorne and Alice Nayeli Thorne Pet: Arcane (A Perrikin)
Backstory
Lilavati left her extremely controlling family after leaving for college to major in Economics, where she met Adrian Raines, and the two became close friends (she was already dating Lyra's father and unknowingly pregnant). As far as her family knows, she's a Board Member/Head of Business for Raines Corporation. In actuality, she's a witch who eventually started working as a kind of supernatural diplomat to ensure peace between supernatural beings, which ended up being for the NYC vampire clans. She's under the vampire clans' protection (but she associates most with Adrian since they're the closest). She was extremely happy for Adrian when he met Evie and fell deeply in love with her. After Lyra is born, she asks Adrian and Evie to be her godparents. In my head, Evie shows up at some point during Nightbound in the Priya Lacroix scene and mentions how much Lyra reminded her of her mother (it took Lyra a second to recognize who Evie was because it's been a while but she knew Evie was a familiar figure). Antonio blames Adrian and Evie (and the rest of the BB crew) for his wife's death and ensures they stay away from his daughter by moving to a smaller home in LA.
Fun Facts:
She's a very talented Carnatic singer! Her extended family wanted her to continue but as much as she loves to sing, she didn’t want to pursue it as part of her future
She is fluent in English and Spanish but proficient in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Dravokian. She learned Spanish from her father and Telugu, Malayalam, and Tamil from her mother. Her parents spoke those languages at home alongside English, but she became less fluent in the languages her mother spoke after she died. And after marrying Trystan, she obviously learned Drakovian
She’s from a wealthy family, or technically her mother was, but she left her old life to have her freedom before Lyra’s older cousins were even born. Lyra herself has an even larger inheritance after her mother died, but her father didn’t feel comfortable using her family money “irresponsibly.” She plans to use that money for her education.

‘That breakup scene with Nik Ryder in Nightbound was something new and made me cry. But at least it's something new and it felt real, because players are always used to be loved by their LI no matter what. PB makes the LI always love the MC, even when MC meets them for the first time. Nik Ryder and MC became from bodyguard/client relationship to lovers. First Nik cared only about the job and now it's all about MC, a person he truely cares about. The breakup scene was just a step to keep MC save and happy because Nik always loses people he loves the most. It was hard for him and he didn't wanted this either. He felt forced about his decision. I just can't believe there are still Nik-haters in the fandom. I'm for a #NikRyderAppreciationWeek. Our bodyguard, protector and hero of the Night deserves that. My underrated opinion !’

As always, tags in the reblog!
"Are you nervous?" Adrian asked, attentively looking at Amy. They were in a private room of his lab, where two beds had been set up for her and Alex. It was a small space but it had everything they could possibly need to assist them if there was a problem.
"A little." He smiled at her, compassionate and supportive.
"Everything will be fine. I promise." He tried to reassure her… And himself. "Even Ryder gave his approval." He added, with a slightly sarcastic tone.
"Because Nik is such an expert in the potion terrain,” Alex commented as Nik rolled his eyes while Amy let out a small chuckle.
“There are many things you still don’t know about me, rook.”
“If you say so.” Both women walked to the beds, looking at each other for a moment, before sitting on the mattresses. Amy took Alex’s hand, squeezing it. “I hope this works,” Alex said, her eyes fixed on the woman in front of her. Fixed on her own face. Alex returned the gesture.
“Me too.” Amy sighed. “Drinks on me if it does.” Alex giggled and Amy let a little smile out.
“You got yourself a deal.” They stood in silence until Adrian, gently clearing his throat, called their attention.
“If you are both ready, we may start.” He pointed to the scientists in the door who were carrying two identical glasses with the potion. Amy looked at Alex again and she nodded.
“We are.” As the liquid ran down Amy's throat, Adrian closely observed her. Amy, from Alex's body, looked at him as she was lying down. She winked at him although her smile was small and nervous. He walked over to her.
"I'll be right here." He knelt beside her and gently kissed her forehead. "Waiting for you."
"You've been doing that a lot lately." Adrian chuckled, holding her hand.
"I don’t mind." His fingers softly caress her hair.
“A man who doesn't mind waiting?” She leaned on his touch. “How did I get so lucky?” He softly chuckled again and sweetly smiled at her.
“You are worth any wait, Amy.” She blinked slowly and heavily. “And, believe me, I’m the lucky one.”
"Debatable." His hand cupped her right cheek, softly brushing with his thumb the soft skin under it. “Adrian… If this doesn't work, if anything happens…”
“I won't let anything bad happen to you, Amy. Not ever again.” Her eyes slowly drifted close as the potion quickly kicked on.
“I just don't want you to feel guilty.” She whispered as her breathing became shallow and her heartbeat slowed down drastically, her skin pale and a bit cooler as he tried to ignore the similarities with the night in the Met, ignoring his fear of losing her again.
“I won't be feeling anything more than happiness when you wake up.” With a small move of her head, she nodded. “And you will wake up sound and safe, Amy.” He said, desperately trying to believe his own words. “I promise.”
"See you soon." She said in a barely audible murmur.
"See you soon." He repeated as her hand went limp in his hold. He kissed her knuckles and reluctantly freed her hand, standing up.
***
Nik watched warily while Alex took the potion. He knew it was the right decision, and so far the only possible solution they had found, but, at the end of the day, he wasn’t ecstatic about it. He watched how her lips touched the glass and how in one fast motion, the liquid had disappeared. She lay on the mattress, and after one second of hesitation, he sat beside her. Amy and Adrian were softly speaking beside them so he just focused on her. “Alex…” With a little hesitation, he guided his hand towards hers, taking it as gently as possible. “I will be watching over you, rook.”
“Because you have to?”
“‘Cause… You are important to me.” He noticed the tiny smile that lifted the corners of her lips and the light squeeze of her fingers around his.
“Glad to hear it.” She sighed deeply, her head falling to the side as her eyelids felt heavy like she hadn't slept in days. “I know there's a lot we need to talk about… And that a lot has happened lately but… I’m glad you are here, Nik.”
“There’s no other place in the world I would prefer to be, Alex.” Her eyes were finally closed and her whole body seemed drained, looking vulnerable as the day that Thomas attacked her. He stood, almost at the same time as Raines, and walked beside him to the chairs in front of the beds.
A few minutes later, Nik cut the silence. "You know, I didn't know vampires could be so... sappy," Adrian smirked at Nik's words.
"Of course we can. We are not nighthunters after all." He crossed his arms over his chest, never looking away from the two women.
"C'mon Raines, I did my homework." Adrian turned his focus to him and lifted his brow. "Your past precedes you, pal."
"It might. I won't deny that I have done … dreadful things in my past. Things I'm not proud of, but I deeply regret them." For a moment, Nik saw pain and regret in his face. He wondered if he had the same expression when he talked about his own past. “But I changed. I left all that behind me.”
"Does she know?" Nik asked with a head gesture referring to Amy.
"Most of it." Nik nodded, pensive. “She’s a Bloodkeeper. I wouldn’t be able to hide my past from her even if I wanted to.” He smiled, looking proud of Amy. "And I don’t want to. She deserves honesty." For a moment the only sound in the lab room was the distant noise of the machines from the other part of the lab. Both Amy's and Alex's heartbeats had slowed to a near stop. “Does Alex know about your private conversation with the Fate?” Nik narrowed his eyes with suspicion and Adrian smirked. “I did my homework as well.” He considered Raines' words, assessing his answer.
“No. She didn’t say much.”
“I see.” Adrian looked at the timer that had been set up above the beds. Only forty minutes had passed and the nerves were settling in by the second.
Nik stood, taking a few steps around. “Goddammit.” He said, frustrated, stopping in front of Alex's body. “This is torture.”
“I agree.” Adrian put his hands together, tightly, until he sighed and relaxed again. “But unfortunately, there's nothing we can do right now. Just wait.”
“I know that,” Nik said with clear irritation in his voice. “You seem calm, tho.”
“I'm terrified,” Adrian responded with such sincerity that Nik turned to watch him, surprised, as the vampire walked to the side of Amy's bed with a complex look in his eyes. “It's the second time that I have to watch Amy unconscious for hours desperately wanting that she will be okay. The second time I'm scared to lose her.” A deep sigh escaped him. “Feeling powerless to help her.”
“...I understand the sentiment.” Nik put his bow against the wall, near to him but lowering his ward for the first time. “If Alex doesn't wake up…” He ran his fingers through his hair. “I really hurt her, you know? I need to fix it.” He trailed off, with regret. “I can't lose her. Not again.”
“It seems our concerns are similar.” Adrian took off his blazer and loosened the tie around his neck.
“Looks like it.” Seconds turned to minutes and minutes to hours as time slowly passed. According to Ivy, the minimum waiting time was five hours, and the maximum time was eight hours. If the clock marked more, the results could be catastrophic.

Nik finds out about the truth 😮😱
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene at the end brought up more questions than before. Like there was more planned in the beginning for a future sequel. Why did the Fate payed so much for Alex her protection? And how are the Fate, Alex and Nik bounded together? Why is Fate so mean to Nik? Also, Nik must be pretty clever... I mean, I just wonder how he just found out about this 😮

An NB fan asked if we could do a hair switch between NB and DS LIs. Cal and Ed were done a few months back. You may have to scroll down a while on this blog to find it, since the original art file was deleted and can’t be re-uploaded.

one: let's meet again, for the first time
Pairing: currently ambiguous, f!MC (Niamh) x Cal, f!MC (Niamh) x (m!OC) Xander
Book: Nightbound
Word count: 3450
Rating: T
Warnings: cursing, mention of drugs
Category: (according to choices) horror; short-series, supernatural, romance
A/n: I'm not sure how my brain works and I don't think I want to find out, but this was first inspired by toss a coin to a witcher, but here we are. Bon appétit.
I’ve teased about writing it for years (literally), so I’m just as surprised as those of you who remember me talking about it, that I’m actually publishing it 😂
Quick introduction:
Initially, Niamh stayed in NOLA for a few months but eventually left
Throughout the events of the book, Niamh and Cal did not romance each other, but they had a short-lived fling several weeks after the fight with Thomas
By any means, I do not promise to be faithful to the original in terms of... anything. If something is not as it was in the book, it's because I deliberately changed it.
Setting: a year after the events of Nightbound
Tag list: @ladylamrian @lazypartridge @ginnyginsposts @brycesgirl @cashweasel @lilyoffandoms @choicesficwriterscreations (if you wish to be added or taken off the list, dm me! as usual, sorry if I forgot about someone)

Nothing can prepare you for grief. There is no handbook of conduct, and it does not get easier the second time.
Until forced to spend hours by herself in a spacious chamber, Niamh never thought of her as a survivor or as bearing any trauma. It was half past midnight by New Orleans’ time, the air was heavy and suffocating despite the downpour outside. She's been in Crystaval for over a year, learning the ways of conduct, history, military strategy and magic when despite Lady Avyanna’s motto of nipping one’s emotions in the bud, Niamh fell into panic. She always thought that grief only concerned those who lost someone dear to them, but having spent many hours in isolation she realised that she was grieving her old life, the one she was ready to leave behind before agreeing to stay in Crystaval.
Tumblr media
"My Lady, a visitor has arrived."
She nodded almost imperceptibly as her eyes continued to observe the reflection in the mirror. A young woman was staring back at her, clothed in luxurious fabric, wearing a thousand-year-old jewellery, one that created the impression of a powerful, steady leader.
Straightening her back, Niamh rose up, and followed her aide towards the Grand Hall.
“Is everything ready for the announcement?”
“Yes, my Lady.”
“Who is the guest?”
“A young man from your birth realm. A nighthunter. He said the matter is urgent.”
Her heart skipped a beat, but her face remained impassive. The clicking of her heels reverberated in the spacious hall, blending with the happy chirping of the dwarf kingfishers, birds native to Crystaval, until a high-pitched ringing forced her to stop and lean against the wall. Alerted, Xander scanned the surroundings and, having found nobody around, placed a hand on Niamh’s back. “Breathe, Nia,” he said softly, stroking her skin.
The sense of duty threatened to blow his chest apart. Xander knew that this condition was unusual, possibly life-threatening, thus could not be taken lightly; however, Niamh made it very clear that this should stay between them. Since he was subordinate to her and not the Queen, Xander was obliged to follow the orders of the heiress to the throne.
Niamh bit her lip when the ringing became louder, clouding her mind and making her lose her balance.
“We should tell someone about this, it’s potentially dangerous and happens too frequently lately,” Xander murmured while delicately wiping the golden tears off her cheeks.
“Don’t you dare,” she threatened. “I have it under control.”
Closing her eyes, Niamh took a couple of deep breaths, waiting for her heartbeat to slow down. When she opened her eyes, she found Xander piercing her with his gaze.
“Let’s go.”
Familiar laughter echoed in the spacious room.
“What brings you to Crystaval?”
“What the actual fuck, Niamh?”
The royal guards eyed the nighthunter, looking alerted, but the blonde did not pay them any attention. Xander stepped closer, his hand already on the hilt of his dagger. Noticing the mobilisation, Niamh intervened: “At ease, he's a friend. Why don’t we step outside?”
In comparison to Crystaval, Lamrian's gardens were mundane, stale, boring even. The water had a purplish tint, the sky was adorned with two suns—Halcyona, the crimson giant, and Eirele, a smaller one, yet still bigger than Earth’s sun was slightly peachy. The scarce clouds were pink, and the air smelled of the lush greenery surrounding them. Nik found himself fascinated by the landscape, especially because he’s never been allowed to Crystaval, but his eyes never left Niamh's silhouette.
“You said you were coming back home,” Nik started, fumbling with his leather glove.
“This is my home.”
“Don't play dumb, rookie, you know damn well what I mean. All of a sudden, you decided to become, what, a queen? How come no one in the supernatural world knew about this? How is it even possible? Elric wasn't exactly that much of a big shot."
Niamh sighed quietly and began smoothing out her baby blue dress in an attempt to hide the trembling of her hands. “The throne is rightfully mine, but no, I am not a queen yet. Since Lady Thalissa preferred to remain in the colony, it became my duty to care for the folk of Crystaval as well as maintain peace among all seven realms,” she looked up and was immediately met with a pair of piercing grey eyes. “The kind fae of the Lavender City were asked to keep the new administration a secret until told otherwise, as we did not want unfit creatures knowing the authority was weak and unstable. Soon, the news will spread. I have gone through extensive teachings of Sir Xander about the history, politics, and militarization, as well as Lady Avyanna's magical training. Tomorrow, we’ll issue a statement of Crystaval’s readiness to aid other realms should they need it.”
Nik chuckled at the ridiculousness of this situation and averted his gaze, letting it fall on a peculiar looking plant, transforming right in front of his eyes. The flower’s petals were similar to regular lilies in shape, yet its colour differed from what Nik knew back from his realm. The pitch black of the petals was brought out by the elongated, luminescent cyan stamen, and the longer he looked, the more drawn into them he was.
“Don’t stare for too long, or you’ll hallucinate for several days,” Niamh warned. The nighthunter reluctantly obeyed. “Cyan Lily Regina, the hidden treasure of the realm. These stamens hide the dose of cyanide that could easily kill entire kingdoms. The most dangerous poison in all seven realms.”
Nik coughed. “I assume Sir Xander is the one watching me like a hawk?”
“Yes. He’s the royal advisor and the head of the army, you can trust him.”
“Sure I can,” Nik mumbled mockingly and lowered his voice to make Xander’s eavesdropping job much harder. “Niamh, what actually happened?”
“Queen Nymeria of Crystaval visited me in a vision two weeks after I left and requested that I visit her urgently. During the meeting, she explained that my father was her son, fourth in line to the throne. The rest of her children died under the attack of Svarvali tribes two days before she contacted me, which made me the last rightful heiress.”
“Elric must've been the long-lost child, I suppose,” Nik commented, gathering his thoughts. Ever since it was brought to his attention that Niamh might have indeed resided in either Lamrian or Crystaval, he began studying the fae’s politics, history, developing an unhealthy obsession with the royal bloodline. He noticed discrepancies within the official family tree, and according to his research, at least one heir was removed from the official data.
He made a mental note to update his notes. His gaze kept coming back to the flower.
“Her Majesty is approaching her final days. Having in mind the balance of all the realms, Lady Fate warned the Queen that she must train the heir and since I had demonstrated magical abilities, I was considered a prospective heiress immediately. Now I serve as the Queen's First Lady. With the aid of the royal advisors, I carry out Her Majesty's duties as she is no longer able to perform them. May I ask what brought you here?” Niamh resumed.
Nik squared his shoulders and sighed heavily as his fingers caressed the engraved hilt of his dagger.
“You ain't gonna like it, I'm afraid,” he admitted. “Something’s goin’ on in the bayou, it’s messing with the pack's minds," Nik continued, averting his gaze when Niamh finally looked at him. He cleared his throat. "They're nervous, angry—well, angrier than usual. Kinda hard to explain. They say they can hear the voices of their dead loved ones convincing them to give in to their primal needs, to kill, slaughter. Embrace the wolf, or some bullshit. One of them attacked a witch coven last night. They barely made it out alive."
Niamh frowned. "You came all the way here to bother the Queen about a vengeful evil spirit? It's a good thing you met me instead."
“I’ve checked every position in the bestiary, so trust me when I say it ain't no evil spirit, rook— Niamh. It's been going on for weeks, people keep disappearing and the pack's becoming a real pain in the ass, so you might wanna move your royal ass to New Orleans and play Moulder and Scully to figure out what's going on because neither me nor Kathy have a clue how to stop it. Besides, I had a hunch I might find you here.”
“You had no way of knowing that.”
“You’re underestimating my detective abilities.”
"Do you mean pestering Lady Fate for information for so long that she either gives it to you or curses you?" Niamh raised her eyebrow, smiling softly, and Nik averted his gaze yet again. She noticed a fresh scar on the left side of his face, which he skilfully hid until now. "What happened?"
He shrugged uncomfortably. "Your local werewolf leader wasn't a fan of my interrogation techniques."
"Octavia isn't a fan of you as far as I remember. She probably just waited for an occasion."
His brows knitted. "Last I checked, Octavia got her ass beaten during the competition. She was licking her wounds for weeks."
"Competition?"
"Ain't you supposed to know all that's hanging in our realm?"
Niamh blushed. Indeed, she was supposed to know that, and to a great extent she did—she just didn't want to receive any updates on the NOLA werewolf pack.
Quickly realising his mistake, Nik added:
"There were two candidates and neither wanted to step down, so according to some kind of their law they had to fight for the position. Cal spared her life, which was apparently very controversial, but yeah, he won anyway."
"Cal never wanted to be the Alpha, why did he change his mind?"
He shrugged and pointed towards the scar with his finger. "Take it up with him, we ain't on the best terms."
"Very well," she agreed, breaking eye contact. "Give me fifteen minutes."
Tumblr media
“I hate portals,” Nik mumbled and took a look around. “You took us to the bayou already, great, it’ll save us some time.”
Niamh took a look around at the familiar wooden houses, the lake she used to watch every evening as Cal promised her to see fairies there, and the common bonfire area they used to spend many nights by. Her mouth felt dry at the thought of meeting him again.
“Alrighty, so a little heads-up—the chick you see next to Cal is Vivian, his unbearable, sassy girlfriend or whatever they call it. A real bitch, if you ask me, embodies everything I hate 'bout werewolves. Massive pain in the ass, too.”
Niamh nodded, ignoring the pinch in her chest at the sight of Cal’s arm around the woman’s waist. You have no right to feel that way, she reminded herself as they made their way towards the small congregation of men. Pack meeting. She remembered how Cal would ask her to stay home until he came back from those meetings, so she wouldn't accidentally interrupt. Pack meetings were in a way sacred to the participants, but the blond nighthunter paid little attention to that detail. Following him, Niamh soon stood in front of the pack leader, giving a stern look to a wolf next to him, ready to pounce on her. Suddenly changing his mind, he backed down and others followed suit.
Nik cleared his throat. "See, I brought in help."
Holding his gaze turned out to be one of the hardest tasks she’s ever been granted. She felt her eyelids twitch and hands shake, her brain was telling her to look away and run, but as a representative of Crystaval on official business that was not an option she could use. Straightening her back, she tightened her jaw and assumed an impassive expression. Cal could hear the pounding of her heart, she knew that. There was no fooling him. However, having observed him for a few weeks, she also knew how to read him, thus it was easy for her to see his confusion and the perplexed look on his face.
"How the hell is she going to help?"
Nik's gloved hand flipped Niamh’s long hair onto her back, revealing a string of golden runes on the side of her neck, old-nymetic runes that every supernatural creature knew about and was taught to respect. The runes said as follows: a high-ranking Crystaval royal, under royal guard's protection, powerful magic wielder, dragon protector. Child of the storm. And an augury rune, mysterious and portentous.
Crystaval royals were considered a very specific, hermetic group. They were those who held true power and ruled the supernatural world in all seven realms, those whose power far exceeded even the Fate's. Extensive training and versatile knowledge made them the most skilled, knowledgeable magic wielders in the universe. Hardly ever they were to leave Crystaval so as not to meddle in ordinary affairs, all of them marked with a person specific number of ancient golden runes, unforgeable, known to everyone.
Cal remembered his mother telling him not to ever cross people with golden runes, especially those with the augury rune. He never learned what it meant, but seeing one on his ex-girlfriend’s neck worried him.
Vivian spoke up. "Do you expect us to bow? Cause wolves don't do that, especially not in front of half-bloods."
Nik's brows perked up in surprise, yet he couldn't contain a mocking chuckle. "Feisty. And stupid."
"Viv," Cal warned, growling deep in his chest, his grip tightening on her hip.
"I don't care for your bows," Niamh responded calmly, her gaze pining the woman in front of her. "However, be advised who you're speaking to, as the next time I’ll order my guard to have your head impaled and exhibited as a warning."
The coolness and self-confidence in her voice made Nik's heart skip a beat in the most negative sense of the word. Sensing the threat, Vivian, unwillingly, bowed her head a little in a gesture of apology. Cal spoke up.
"So I assume you're here about Mason. We already interrogated him, he doesn't remember much more than I've told you over the phone," he addressed Nik. "I'm afraid you came here in vain."
"That remains to be seen, our neighbourhood fae queen-to-be appears to have some new powers to show off."
"Queen?"
In her head, she punched Nik in the arm with all her might. In reality, though, her eyes shyly met Cal's and despite the sudden urge to run at the familiar warmth, she spoke up.
"Yes, Queen Nymeria's journey in the far realm is coming to an end, and I was appointed her successor."
Cal choked down the urge to say "the hell?" hearing the manner of her speech. Niamh seemed brainwashed, perhaps indeed trained to become one of the most powerful figures in the supernatural world. It wasn't the same person he woke up to every morning last year.
"Listen, it's a mystery to me too, but we have more pressing matters on our hands now, don't we?"
Cal nodded. The pack meeting was rescheduled, and he led his guests toward a small wooden cabin, hidden deeper in the forest. Mason let them in wordlessly.
Niamh observed Mason while him, Nik, and Cal gave an account of the events of the night when he "lost control" as he called it. Finally, she addressed her companions. "Isn't it similar to the case of Jimmy?"
"Jimbo," Nik corrected her. "I mean, kinda, but not entirely. Jimbo, as it turned out, was poisoned and with him being a werewolf it didn't kill him but made him go feral. Mason was aggressive, but he kept mentioning voices."
"He got into a fight with several other pack members and mauled them pretty badly, but he was still able to obey me. I'm no expert on spells and witchcraft, but could it be that? We do have beef with another pack and several witches, maybe they decided to take revenge?"
Niamh shook her head. "I would feel it. There's no magic involved. Are you sure it's not some illegal substances from a new source?" she addressed the man on the sofa.
He looked up at her, shyly, unsure how he should show her respect. "I don't use, Lady."
Having pondered over the possibility of using magic on him long enough, Niamh proposed going through the werewolf's memories "It's not going to be comfortable, but I need you to stay as relaxed as possible and don't block your memories," she instructed, taking a seat on the armchair next to him. He nodded.
Cal nudged the nighthunter on his right, focused on polishing his pocket knife. Niamh kept instructing the werewolf in the other room. "Do you feel it?"
"Feel what?"
"The power she holds. It's… I've never felt anything like this. It makes you obey her even, the air feels different around her."
"What about last year?"
"Not to that extent. You can easily tell she's from Crystaval now."
Nik hummed, thinking of Cal’s words. "Fascinating," he muttered, watching one of the runes on her neck shimmer as she worked her magic on Mason. Leaning across the door frame with his hands crossed on his chest, Cal observed it as well, trying to wrap his head around the fact of how much she has changed in a year. "Well?"
"There's nothing,” she said, calmly, taking her time with the answer. Her hand touched Mason’s cheek as if in a soothing gesture.
"So maybe magic after all?" Cal suggested.
"No, there's nothing. Absolutely no recollection of that day. That's dark sorcery. You must have made enemies with someone more important than a local witch coven, Cal."
Take it easy today, she addressed the werewolf and exited his house. Cal followed.
"Should I call you your majesty now?"
"Not yet."
Taking his place next to her, the werewolf folded his arms.
"Nik told me you're the Alpha now. How come? The last time we saw each other, you wanted to leave this place and lead a quiet, peaceful life."
"A lot has changed since you ran away."
She turned her head to the other side, pretending to be looking at a passing dog. Of course, he held a grudge, she would as well. She left for no apparent reason. Cal sighed.
"The pack needed a strong leader. We've been having some issues with the Texas pack, and Octavia would just escalate the conflict to the point of a war."
"What do they want from you?"
"Beats me," he crossed his arms on his chest. "They're just sending threats for now. No demands."
“There’s something about him that just doesn’t sit right with me,” Nik interrupted, closing the front door. “You sure didn’t see anything suspicious?”
“No. How did you know how to find me? The court made sure the information would not get out until the right time."
"Yeah, believe me, I've noticed. Your secrecy cost me another round of stripping for the Fate and almost getting cursed, but she budged."
"Why were you looking for me?"
"Cause of Cal, obviously. He said your disappearance was weird, that your phone number no longer existed, and your mother said she hasn't seen you in months. Kristin was surprised as well. It got me thinking you might've fled to Lamrian, but it looks like you managed to made enemies there," he nudged her shoulder playfully. "Come on, spill, what'd you do to poor Thalissa?"
Cal looked up at her, his interest piqued.
"She believes I'm unworthy of taking my father’s rightful place on the Crystaval throne," she shrugged. "Don't believe in Lamrian's mushy sweet facade, Nik. Those who live there are expatriates from Crystaval, often times criminals who found refuge in Lamrian, which is basically n outlaw colony. Thalissa's protective domes aren't for bloodwraiths, they're for Crystaval's officials."
"What about Garrus?"
"As far as I know, he's free to come back."
"Does he know that? Cause he sure doesn't seem to."
"We've notified him several times. It was the first decree I issued when I gained influence."
Nik sighed heavily, looking around the bayou in thought. “Can we talk about this over a drink or is your curfew up?”
