Page 1. ---- Poverty Likes Companionship, Decides Chief --- Special to The Star Hamilton, March 7. - Poverty likes companionship, according to Chief Constable Clark, superintendent of the Children's Aid Society, who yesterday investigated eviction of a county family from their farm home. They apparently had no shelter available when the landlord evicted them. To his surprise he found that, although the couple were penniless and on relief they recently informally adopted two young children. They were determined to keep the youngsters, but Chief Clark decided they must be returned to their original homes. Temporary shelter was provided for the family.

1. Israel committing genocide as the world watches, international laws violated brazenly and yet Israel received no repercussion, brands funding the ethnic cleansing of thousands and resume business as usual, the president of the free world denying freedom for Palestine. actually one of the things about perpetually online ppl that rly annoys me is how they blindly adopt communism as an inverse of capitalism and call themselves a "communist" (i mostly see this w gen z age ppl that live in the us) as a way to say that they hate america when they really have no idea how badly communism decimated eastern european countries and their possibilities to grow into a stable economic state

#i joke abt this but it's literally the truth: communism made me autistic #in the very late 90s when ukraine had just separated from the ussr they were very much a third world country #vodka and alcohol was cheaper and more available than fresh water and it resulted in many children being born with #fetal alcohol syndrome and other birth defects and this of course led to orphanages being overcrowded and underfunded #in the orphanage where i was kept before i was adopted the nurses and aides didnt even have real baby food to feed us #they gave us watered down tea and broth for food and ofc this made us malnourished on top of whatever other issues we had health wise #so the next time you want to be super edgy or whatever actually take some time to critically think about the long term effects that communi #has had in our society and in countries that have not had the ability to thrive economically

can i be honest im 100% for the fact that like the tradwife stay at home mom thing is really fucked culturally but also like i think we as a society have to figure this shit out because a child needs the equivalent (if not more) of a full time job's worth of work from an adult who (for the health of the child and for the ethics of the situation honestly) needs to be able to function in a way that isn't making the adult miserable because being raised by miserable adults has really tangible negative impacts on children. whether its community childcare so that simply more adults can be involved in the situation or much more robust social aid towards young families. like this might he stupidly idealistic but i think really the root of a lot of issues in society come from the fact that people refuse to understand the gravity of like. parenthood. its an insane responsibility. i think it should be treated as such

The children of Gaza have gone back to living in fear, constantly hearing the sounds of warplanes over their heads. The people of Gaza have gone back to expecting to die.

It is far from time to lose steam. This is not over just because the bombing stopped for a week. The genocide continues and has been ramped up. Do not stop talking about Palestine. Do not stop bearing witness to what is happening. Do not stop demanding that it ends.

You sure about that?

I mean, just for a start, have you taken a good look at her fantasy creatures lately? A whole bunch of them are straight-up based on malicious and dehumanizing stereotypes about actual people.

Remember the werewolves? And being a werewolf was made into a kind of metaphor for having AIDS?

And you know how AIDS was first associated with gay men? And how conservatives back in the day were claiming gay men were preying on children in order to convert them to gayness?

Remember how Fenrir Greyback preyed on children in particular? Yeah, she put that subtext in there. She was an adult in the 90's. She knew damn well what she was doing.

Remember the house elves? Remember how most of them loved to serve and needed to have a home and a master or else they just wouldn't know what to do with themselves?

Did you know that's literally what slavers in the American South said about the Black people they kept enslaved? Go look up the happy slave myth.

Do I even need to get into the goblins and the antisemitic tropes they're based on? No, folkloric goblins were not gold-hoarding bankers waiting for their chance to stab humanity in the back.

"But the characters are so good!"

Are you kidding me?

Most of her characters are pretty one-dimensional, including Harry. Her idea of making a morally complicated character is giving a tragic past to a bully. Numerous characters are little more than stereotypes. (Looking at Fleur right now.) Literally anybody, including you, can easily make dozens of characters just as good, if not better. (It doesn't exactly take a lot of character designing skill to go, "hey, actually, having a sad backstory doesn't make it okay to bully children" or "hey, maybe I should not base a character on the first stereotype that pops into my head.")

"But the rest of the worldbuilding!"

Sorry, but her worldbuilding is just as basic as her characters. Magical castles and secret passages are stock tropes. Magical people who keep their true nature secret from humanity is the premise of pretty much every White Wolf TTRPG. Most of her fantasy creatures are just common European fairy tale and folklore creatures with shitty stereotypes projected onto them.

I'm not saying "basic worldbuilding bad." I'm saying, you could do just as good, if not better, with minimal effort.

Also there's her magical bioessentialism, where only Harry's abusive blood relatives could provide him with supernatural protection from Voldemort. Rowling thus effectively declared that non-biological family isn't quite real family, and that abusive biofamily can give you some essential thing that a loving, supportive family that isn't related to you just can't.

The Hogwarts houses are one of the most insidious elements of her worldbuilding. The idea of being sorted gives you a little dopamine hit because wow now you have a li'l niche where you belong!

But the actual function of the houses and sorting system and the House Cup is teaching children to see each other as rivals, and ensure that the most toxic views of the upper class get passed on to every new batch of kids sorted into Slytherin.

Hogwarts effectively prepares children for a dystopia where magic serves to distract its citizens from how nightmarishly awful it is. Economic inequality is so bad that people like Arthur and Molly Weasley can barely afford to put their kids through school, casual sadism is just an accepted norm in everyday society, and non-humans are second class citizens. Rowling sorta acts like she thinks this is a bad thing with certain lines she gave to Dumbledore, but in the end, her special boy protagonist becomes an auror; IE, a defender of the status quo. So.

If you've never seen it, Lily Simpson's video goes into even more detail on how the worldbuilding of Harry Potter is actually incredibly fucked up, and how it betrays small-minded attitudes on Rowling's part. There's no separating the art from this artist, because Rowling's rotten values pour out of nearly every page.

Yes, there are many things in Harry Potter that evoke feelings and inspire people, but there's absolutely nothing in it that this series has a monopoly on. You can find those same experiences in much, much better media.

“Sentenced To Work On Farm,” Border Cities Star. February 6, 1933. Page 3. ---- Guilty Husband Must Hand Money Over To His Wife ---- FREDERICK FITZPATRICK, found guilty on a charge of assaulting his wife, was "farmed out" on the orders of Magistrate Brodie in Windsor Police Court this morning, Fitzpatrick is to labor on the John Plant farm, Sandwich South, for the next three months and his earnings are to be turned over for the maintenance of his wife and children. 

In addition to the assault count, the accused was also charged with corrupting his home but M. R. Winters, inspector for the Children's Aid Society, consented to withdrawal. Fitzpatrick was tried a week ago on the assault charge, his defence being that he had been obliged to oppose his wife when she attacked him with a hammer and curling irons. 

Magistrate Brodie ruled that he might come to Windsor to see his children, but only when accompanied by Mr. Plant. Otherwise, suspended sentence was given on condition that he stay away from the city for the three month period.

Free Palestine - ceasefire now!

EDIT: the strike is over but I am leaving this post up in case any of these resources are helpful

There is currently a strike for Palestine taking place from February 18th, 2024, to February 25th, 2024. During this time, I will only be posting about Palestine on this account and doing what I can to spread awareness. If you are able, I highly recommend participating in the strike in whatever way you are able - something is always better than nothing. Staying home from work and/or school, not buying anything that isn't strictly necessary, using your social media platforms only to boost posts about Palestine, etc., are all ways to help the efforts!
