Sunday, May 14, 2023 - Dance Like a Chicken Day and Mother's Day

My grandmother had a collection of chicken hats - full bodies with real feathers and all - that she would bring out at every family celebration so we could all do the chicken dance (accompanied by an old German record). By the time she passed away the hats were in sad shape. I don't know what became of them when her estate was dispersed, but it's nice to still have the memory of three generations dancing around like idiots wearing chickens on their heads.

LOCKING

Es un estilo que pertenece a los "Funk Styles". se caracteriza por los movimientos rápidos de manos y brazos, combinados con otros más relajados de caderas y piernas. Muchos de sus movimientos son puramente cómicos y permiten interactuar con el público.

El Locking se originó en los años 60´s , en California, se bailaba originalmente con música funk tradicional. Esta basado en dos estilos de danza llamados Chicken Dance y Robot Shuffle.

Don Campbell es considerado el creador del Locking. Don Campbell, era un bailarín de los estilos de Chicken Dance y Robot Shuffle, empezó a ser reconocido, ya que en el momento en el que se equivocaba practicando los estilos, se burlaba y hacía una broma del error. Básicamente hacía una pausa estática entre varios movimientos rápidos que llamó "Lock" o bloqueo. Rápidamente todos comenzaron a combinar esos bloqueos con acrobacias, vueltas, salto y nuevo pasos.

El Locking salió del gueto y de los clubes nocturnos para apoderarse de un lugar muy privilegiado en la sociedad. La gran catapulta de este estilo y de muchos otros estilos urbanos fue la aparición del programa de televisión "Soul Train" en 1973. Este fue un programa dirigido por un reportero llamado "Don Cornelio" enfocado en dar a conocer el talento en la danza urbana de EEUU.

En este programa de televisión comenzó a aparecer "The Lockers", quien fue el primer grupo de Locking creado y era dirigido por Don Campbellock.
