Jessica Drew knew all about complicated. Complicated was her middle name (better than Miriam, at least). She was raised as terrorists and bled spy … juices, and she was a spider-person, which meant she was basically destined for a life of strange and irritating things going down even when she tried to get things in order. But secret identities, they just added a whole other layer to things that she wasn’t particularly thrilled about dealing with. It was alright until she came into contact with someone she knew outside the mask in the mask, and she didn’t have Peter’s spidey sense to rely on to help out with that. (She was pretty sure she had some version of it, but paranoia really messed with your sense of what was a threat and what wasn’t.)

It was only when she heard the click of a pen behind her, the telltale scratching of it against a reporter’s pad, that she realised someone was watching her. Jess turned around slowly, feet still stuck to the ceiling of the bank, and she was pretty sure the white eyes on her mask grew a few sizes when she saw none other than MJ Watson looking back at her. “Uh.” Jess cleared her throat, and when she spoke again, her voice was much deeper. It seemed to work for the Dark Knight, right? “Nothing to see here,” she said. “Just, um … just doing my duty. Fighting the good fight. Punching robbers in the … nuts.”

When Tony came back to the workshop immediately after his appointment, he had found that MJ was running messages, and Pepper was busy as hell prepping for her next endorsement meeting. He had stayed in the Tower for a while -- had a slight mental breakdown, tried and failed to eat lunch, worked on some engines until he cut his hand open on the metal, attempted to write out his feelings, and then gave up on all of the former. Barhopping had always been his coping mechanism, after all, and if he only had a year to live, he wasn’t going to change now.

He got back to the Tower late, expecting that MJ would’ve left a note for him, maybe some food on his workbench. Instead, he found her with Dum-E, and he felt like he’d been kicked in the chest. “I could’ve sworn I expounded on my respect for your work ethic a few times already,” Tony said, “but I also mentioned something along the lines of getting a life, right?” It was teasing, though, or as much as he could manage. He walked over to her, ruffling her hair up. It would irritate her, no doubt, but right now all Tony wanted to do was have something to ground him. The small, strained smirk that had briefly been on his face vanished, and he sighed. “Remind me never to listen to you again, won’t you?” he said. “The doctor was as predicted -- depressing, and as always recommending I reduce my alcohol intake. Waste of time, MJ.” He paused for a beat. “I get that you’re worried, though,” he added. “Thanks, for that.”

The return to Avengers Tower was always something to behold. People came out onto the streets, cheering for their heroes, waving Iron Man flags and carrying replicas of Cap’s shields. There were a few, a much smaller number, of children dressed in blue with a lightning bolt across their chest, and others waving their hands, attempting to replicate Wanda’s magic. Pietro told himself that was why he couldn’t join in on the festivities like the other Avengers did. He told himself that’s why he didn’t feel proud, why he didn’t get that grin on his face like Stark did when they returned.

The only place Pietro felt like he could enjoy himself wasn’t at a party in a penthouse -- it was when he showed up at MJ’s place with a cake crudely decorated, his poor attempt at drawing himself in icing. “Hey,” he said, coming to a halt in the middle of her kitchen. He’d done it so many times now that he doubted she would even flinch, but he always secretly hoped she would. He liked seeing the outrage on her face. “I know how big a fan you are of Quicksilver, and I know I get jealous about it considering I am obviously your best friend, but I saw him on the news today and his ass really is something. So, I got you him on a cake.” He brandished the cake, a grin on his face as he did so. “What have you been up to? Not wallowing in missing me, I hope.”

Tony let out a breath, looking around at the shattered remains of the foyer in his childhood mansion. When he told MJ that he was moving back out to Fifth Avenue, she had raised an eyebrow at him, but hadn’t probed much further. She knew by this stage that when Tony got an idea in his head, it wormed around in there until it was set free, and the interim period was just hell for her to listen to him. Truth be told, even Tony wasn’t entirely sure why he wanted to come back here, though he had to admit putting a hammer through the walls of his memories was somewhat bittersweet.

“Is that coffee?” Tony asked, pointing towards her standing in the doorstep, holding a few coffee cups in her hand. “You’ve already saved me, MJ. Come here.” He gestured for her to come closer, taking the coffee once she did, taking a long gulp. He put his arm around her shoulders, using his other hand to gesture widely to the foyer. “Mom used to have a chandelier so low hanging here you banged your head on the way to the dining room,” he said. “Obie donated it to some museum in Paris, so now we need a new vision, something different. How are your interior designing chops?”
