In the latest chapter Callisto looks so surprised after receiving Penelope’s gift. Despite teasing her, he was not expecting such a thing.
It’s always as if he’s glad to get anything from her. It doesn’t matter what the gift is, as long as he knows she thinks of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More specifically, Penelope’s gift is a cufflink with healing magic imbedded into the ruby.
She was embarrassed to give him the cufflink because she didn’t know what to give to someone who already had everything; that’s literally her thought process when he opens the box.
Tumblr media
Callisto is a little confused by the healing abilities of the gem, but Penelope says it’s so he won’t complain about her lack of healing magic when he hurts himself next, basically hinting at their conversation in Solael after he rescued her from the lizard monsters (ch.116)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He ends up piercing his ear with the cufflink, using it as an earring instead, because he wants to wear it immediately.
So although he teased her for her gift, it means a lot to him. Callisto likes getting her attention, no matter whatever the circumstances may be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s quite obvious that Callisto enjoys the way she ‘fusses’ over his well-being.
He likes seeing her worry for him, because despite being usually cold in their interactions, Penelope does care, and the way she acts whenever he’s injured is proof of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Callisto is this way because, as we will learn later on, he truly loves Penelope, she is everything he has. No one’s ever showed care for him like she did, nor did they make him feel like she does. He never gets angry at her for things that would usually spike his temper, but instead he finds her amusing.
Callisto has always had a plan: after ascending the throne, he was going to burn the empire to the ground and start wars upon wars until nothing remained. And yet for Penelope, he didn’t.
He loves her greatly, and even while on the brink of death, Callisto is willing to let Penelope go back to her world because that’s what she wanted. In the side stories he can be defined only as clingy, and it’s such a different look on him than what we’ve seen so far.
Tumblr media
Callisto also mentioned how he thought that his lust and desire were killed on the battlefield by trampling around blood, but this changes when he’s with Penelope.
She is the only thing on his mind, yet Callisto doesn’t seem to mind, it’s the opposite actually.

Ch209 (p4), The queen of tragedy
⚠️ Long post ⚠️
You might be wondering where that heading comes from. I'll get to that in a bit....
So, we are back to recent events, where Finny and Doll fight over Snake, each one claiming the other is the enemy. Both parties are involved in deception; he wonders why they helped him but lied the entire time. Out of the circus troupe, he seems to have been closest to Doll, and she never told him the truth about the circus. He also becomes particularly close to Finny, who immediately likes his snakes, but Finny doesn't inform him about the true fates of his circus friends. Then there're our earl and Sebastian, who lead him to believe the circus members are still alive and just on the lamb.
Tumblr media
Why would the people closest to him all lie to him?
Then we get a couple scenes before his and Finny's assignment begins.
Tumblr media
But this flashback switches from what Snake is recalling... to what a reaper is reviewing. Born March 15 -- the Ides of March -- to an actress named Sarah Kemble. More on her at the end. Death on December 9, 1889, from blood loss.
Tumblr media
The expression on this (new to us!) reaper's face makes me wonder what he's thinking. He says "no additional remarks", but I believe he's thinking some additional thoughts.
Tumblr media
He must realize there's something odd about Doll, who is holding Snake's body and grieving over him. Doesn't he realize she's a bizarre doll? Has he not taken note of the blood transfusion equipment in the room down the hall? What about all the veins popping up all over her body? Hasn't he been informed about the search for Undertaker and his moving corpses?
Does he not yet have info from Othello regarding Layla/Al? We have to keep in mind that this is all probably happening around the same time that Ronald and William are taking Layla/Al into custody, so this reaper might not be fully informed and so might not know what all signs to look for.
Besides, Ronald is sent to Norfolk ahead of the impending deaths, because there was word a bizarre doll is stationed there. He just has to figure out which person it is. Ronald can't tell who the bizarre doll is just by looking, so he has to wait and see who starts acting like one.
This reaper apparently isn't sent to investigate FOL Orphanage, suggesting HQ didn't have similar intelligence regarding a bizarre doll there. If he's not looking for one, he might not bother to take much notice of Doll's appearance or the medical equipment.
Everything is happening at about the same time:
Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao are heading to their next meeting spot while Polaris makes his report to real Ciel and Undertaker. Heathfield is arrested, and the legal investigation there is still underway.
Ronald and William are dealing with Layla/Al, with the intention of taking her back to HQ for examination. Baldo, Lau, and the others are still planning their getaway; they have not yet escaped the sanatorium.
Othello is probably at HQ, working out the finer details of the transfusion machine he has just recently confiscated from the underground facility at Bath. Beyond that, the dove he sent back to HQ might be the only call for help he's requested to deal with Undertaker.
And this reaper is (as far as I can tell) just responding to the assigned task of collecting souls from Snake, Susan, and the head matron. He really might not be in the loop about Undertaker and his moving corpses... just yet.
This gives an easy setup for him to go about business as usual and leave Doll to her grieving. If he doesn't confront her and just leaves, she can ask Undertaker to turn Snake into a bizarre doll -- even if it's just to be her companion. Undertaker would see old goals of revenge in Snake's cinematic records and could potentially turn him against the Phantomhives, through creation of his "episodes" by cherry-picking the memories and goals that would compel him to seek that revenge again. If that happens, we could get Snake confronting our earl and Sebastian... where Sebastian fulfills the implied threat he makes (to Baldo, about any servant who turns against their master) in ch51.
So, there's that.
Then we have a couple other things to discuss: the current date and Snake's mother.
It's December 9, 1889. This works great with my Mother3 theory, which states the contract should end before our earl is officially 14 years old. December 13, 1889 is the eve of that birthday, and it's also a Friday the 13th. This is highly symbolic because of when his father is born and when his paternal grandmother dies. I'm sure there are absolutely zero coincidences in this.
We will go back a few days (again) for the start of our earl's and Sebastian's assignment in Brighton, then we will catch up to December 9th with them. During this time and soon after, they will receive word about the other three assignments, as word trickles in. Or perhaps they are bombarded with all the reports in quick succession. Then we've got another four days for them to finish not just their own assignment but also their contract. Perhaps their assignment finishes around the same time as the others. If so, they have three or four more days to address whatever they have learned.
Now onto Snake's mother. She's based on a real person, or a combination of a few people in a notable family. My own initial research pulled up a Fanny Kemble, who was a British actress who lived in this time period but was too old to be Snake's mother. She bore a daughter named Sarah (Kemble) Butler, but Sarah wasn't an actress. Fanny was well known as a former actress and an abolitionist -- who separated from her husband (Butler), partly over disagreement about slavery -- and returned to the stage, where she renewed her focus on the works of William Shakespeare... performing public readings of his plays.
Discussing the chapter in Discord, I got word -- from @mjmj2994 -- about a Sarah (Kemble) Siddons who was an actress, though she was from the mid-18th to early 19th century. Her mother was also a Sarah Kemble. Turns out that Sarah Siddons (née and a.k.a. Sarah Kemble) was an aunt to the Fanny Kemble I'd found! Small world, eh? Anyway, Sarah Kemble/Siddons (wiki article here) became known as the "queen of tragedy" for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth and other Shakespearean tragic characters -- including numerous cross-dress performances as Hamlet himself. Even though Yana-san would have to change the timeline to fit our Sarah Kemble, this is most likely the historical reference for her. Here's more information about the Kemble family line and their extensive involvement with the acting industry.
Our Snake comes from an esteemed family of actors, and I suppose we are to assume he's an issue who was so quickly covered up and forgotten that he was perhaps never even named. Who was his true father? And how did he come to have such strong snake-like traits? We might never know.
Now we wait to see if this reaper does anything about Doll. And then onto our earl and Sebastian in Brighton!

SPOILERS SXF CHAPTER 93 ❗❗❗
So, chapter 93. Starting with Anya scores...
THAT'S MY GIRL!!!! CONGRATULATIONS BABY!!! 🎉🎊🥳
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Let's take a moment to appreciate what a good and supportive friend Becky is too 💖)
As I expected Anya passed classical language (with a huge improvement!) but in the large, tedious walk on Hell that is school not everyone can get exceptional grades in every subject unless you're a Desmond apparently and Anya, as many people who preceded her and will come after her, failed math.
I have seen many people make theories about how certain older student who we shall discuss next could be her tutor. However, my theory is that she will receive help from Bill in the future
Tumblr media
It makes more sense: both already know each other, Anya has more chances of Bill accepting or suggesting to help her than the-one-I-shall-name-later and overall Bill seems more communicative and better at socialising and explaining himself. Let's not forget he received a stella in math after all. So for me Bill seems like the most plausible option (maybe we will get jealous Damian with this friendship?)
Back at the Forgers residence the Authens pay a visit to congratulate Anya as well. When I read Sigmund's sentence about how rewarding is to have a payment for your hard work my mind automatically thought "But sometimes no matter how hard you try you don't get a reward. Sometimes the result is just not worth the effort" (I think many people has a canon event that reveals them that, specially when you're in highschool, middle school or college)
And right after thinking that he agreed with me lol. My mind really anticipates things before finishing a panel
Tumblr media
Speaking of hard work and grades, I'm taking this chance to give my opinion: a system based on giving stars to those who have the highest grades while those who fail face the possibility of being expelled is awful. Not getting a star and comparing yourself to your peers already make horrors to your self esteem, imagine a child getting expelled for repeatedly fail a exam that may not be adapted to their needs (or getting many tonitrus for things your teachers disapprove of you but you didn't know it was wrong or for something about yourself you cannot control. For example a kid with ADHD unintentionally interrupting someone, disconnecting in the middle of a conversation or making noise with their leg when they stay still for too long. No need to go as far as talking about neurodivergent kids, look at that chapter where Anya got a tonitrus for not having a handkerchief. Who the fuck is punished for that when you're an adult anyway)
Enough of that, back to the chapter. Let's talk about what hyped me the most: Demetrius finally appearing on screen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We already had crumbs of him before. Given Damian inferiority complex when comparing himself to him when he had talked about school and Twilight noticing his exams barely had any mistakes back in the chapter where Daybreak was welcomed to this world, him being a exceptional student when it comes to academics isn't surprising in the least.
Many say he's ugly and exactly like his father but I disagree. Donovan looks like a goddamn Frankenstein if Frankenstein was ugly, Demetrius take after his dead eyes look but he's pretty like Melinda. Not conventionally pretty like Damian or Melinda but kinda pretty. Like a zombie with sleep deprivation but in an endearing way. It's not his fault he's built like a Tim Burton or Don't Starve Together character... anyway I'm sure his appearance can grow up on you, hopefully (;´ ▾ `)
About the theories regarding this panel
Tumblr media
It may be true something's going on, maybe he was really experimented on... But I can't stop thinking he was in that very moment "No thoughts, head empty" mode
I mean, he looks like a walking corpse in dire need of a proper nap, can you blame him if his thoughts are mainly focused on studies when Donovan probably spent time with him only for the sake of producing a good grades, not independent thinking machine as his heir? "He watch him study all the time."
Tumblr media
I don't think it was necessary for a tragic incident to change Donovan and made him distant from his family. I suspect he has always been like that, perhaps even before having Demetrius, so it was less a traumatic big event and more the exhausting everyday life Demetrius has been having as far as he remembers of being supervised by his father in order to be the best at school and everything that turned him into the probably burnt out teenager he is.
Same with Melinda, being married to somebody you might not have even loved when you first got together, a man who doesn't try to understand others or seem capable of caring for anyone, a man who is not precisely publicly known for his kindness (remember Millie and Yor's boss when Donovan was brought up?)... Being married to that kind of person for years and then having kids with that person and have to keep being related to them for at least until your kids graduate sound like a miserable life indeed
The Desmond have a common theme going around that is understanding the world around them, or rather the lack of it. I can say for sure that Demetrius feeling overwhelmed simply with a bunch of kids and thinking he can't understand people have its roots in Donovan
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• For Donovan is his narrow minded belief that nobody can't understand — therefore neither trust — each other because people is different; and as long as that phrase of "two people can't think the same" lives to the reality it finds itself in reaching a common ground is impossible.
• Donovan influenced Demetrius. Perhaps Demetrius doesn't share his father belief and that's not why he can't understand others, maybe it is because he was possibly deprived of a normal childhood where he could socialise with others of his age without his father expectations onto him.
Many academic gifted children reach a part of their lives where their habit is to think inside the box of "Good grades is all I'm good at or all I should care about; good grades = doing fine; it's all about what you can prove to those who expect something from you, not what you can prove to yourself to make you feel satisfied and happy".
When people who raised you condition you to act, live and think the way they wanted you to do is difficult to break and separate yourself from that. Plus he's going through the middle school phase, from personal experience that makes you x10 times angsty and complicated to understand yourself, much less everyone else.
• With Damian it is less discussed and pointed out because he's been able to have a relatively normal —if anything very neglected — childhood up to this point. He has friends, he acts like a kid of his age, his life doesn't revolve around his grades all the time... But that's the bare minimum of what a good childhood should be like.
It may be because of his age, but he doesn't see the bigger picture of his family. He can't see what is wrong with them (yet) because in his eyes nothing is wrong. Sure, he feels lonely and works hard for his dad to notice him, but that happens in many families right? He's not even in denial, he doesn't phantom the idea that what his family is, how they behave towards each other or towards him, isn't normal.
Don't make me start with how his future plans is following Donovan's footsteps in politics because he's trying that hard to approach him. He works hard at school because in his mind being like Demetrius or how he believes Donovan wants him to be would bring them closer, receive an understanding relationship from his dad when we know there might not be genuine affection between them from Donovan's side to start with.
He's teaching himself that love is conditioned by your "worth" or by whether you get to the expectations your loved ones have. That reminds me of what Sigmund told Anya because it sounds like a foretelling of Damian's life: [...] And one day you'll experience the frustration of realizing that hard work is not always rewarded. He doesn't many things and his age may explain it but it doesn't justify, if he continues thinking like that he'll have his hopes crushed and may turn out like Demetrius.
• As for Melinda, is difficult to talk about the point she stands in the understanding theme. Unlike her family she does seem able to understand people, perhaps because she wasn't raised like her kids have been. She's aware that her husband party made a lot of damage to their country, she seems aware and attentive to what surrounds her.
I don't think she cannot be understanding or perceptive, I think it's the other way around: the people she's surrounded by cannot understand her. Neither Yor, Anya, Damian, surely Demetrius and Donovan neither, her "friends" of the association she's in... Not even us can't understand the reason why she's so conflictive about Damian yet.
In just one appearance Donovan made his belief clear, thus giving us an idea of what type of feelings he has towards Damian. We can get so much of his character as a person with one chapter, but Melinda has appeared more than him and her true self is unknown. Donovan is reserved in a physical way, he isolates himself by not going outside and socialising, but he's not against the idea of explaining a stranger his stance in life. Melinda surrounds herself of people and listens to them but she keeps to herself.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to see more of Demetrius and the Desmonds. Hope we get more screen time of them, unless Endo has decided to drop such episode only to give us a one-shot chapter next and not elaborate further before introducing a complete different arc 💦
Although with what we have I'm already bought and entertained enough. Our favorite family is great but hooray for secondary characters being given depth and spotlight in this manga 🥳
See you next chapter reaction! If I made another one after other 25 full moons. I'm probably forgetting to talk about something...Oh well

My thoughts on Spy x Family Chapter 82
Needless to say, (some real serious) manga spoilers alert
Oh, boy, I'm gasping for air. I'm panicking, and I've not panicked this much about Spy x Family since Anya's last hijack incident (which my heart has not recovered yet). Mr. Endo, may you, please, pay my cardiologist bill? I'm not joking, I'm hyperventilating, and my chest is TU DUM, TU DUM.
Tumblr media
The mole was discovered! Poor guy (or not, who knows?). I wonder what SSS will do to him. How far will the organization go? I believe we won't even know.
Tumblr media
I'm seriously nervous for him. Twillight is used to things getting on his way, with minimum complications and this situation is definitely not it. Of course, he could figure things could go bad, since It's a really risky operation, however, I feel his frustration in not getting much time to secure the real wheeler.
Tumblr media
Damn, my heart is not surviving till the end of this chapter.
Tumblr media
Our man got ✨ The Skills ✨ Still, all this shooting is getting me pretty nervous. I'm immediately getting my anxiety meds. Endo, what the actual f-
Tumblr media
Yeah, Twilight is The Man! Still, my hands are trembling and so is my apprehensive cardiac organ. This is sure to be qualified as torture.
Tumblr media
He is quite wise disguising as Yuri. Haha, got it? I'm not okay, Christ.
Tumblr media
Damn, Yuri is very intelligent, as well. The brains had to go to one of the Briar's, am I right? (Poor Yor, I love you, It's not personal. Bad comedy is my coping mechanism when I'm nervous. I'm so sorry!)
Tumblr media
He is right about that. Twilight is nervous. And I wonder why. Maybe because there's more on this game than before? He is a father. A husband. He worries. He is not the same he was before, as much as he tries to convince himself that he is not attached to his fake family dynamics.
I can clearly imagine his thoughts racing. He's thinking about Anya, about Yor, about WISE, while trying to run and get these thoughts away from him in order to not commit mistakes, like leaving a footprint behind. Just saying.
Tumblr media
Oh Yuri, you are so sweet, in a way. And you know absolutely nothing.
Tumblr media
The panic™  on his face. Poor Yuri, I'm truly divided right here. See? I'm calmer, not panicking at all, this is certainly my clonazepam working.
Quick (but important) writer's note here, I'm actually diagnosed with intense anxiety and use prescribed medication, I joke about it, cause It's better to laugh than cry on the reality of my condition, however, never use anxiolytic/benzodiazepines drugs without valid prescription and conscience, it might cause long-term dependency and tolerance. My Pharmacy academic self felt the need to point this out. Moving on!
By the way, have you noticed the "waver"? Twilight is hesitating, deeply, which makes him more prone to aiming wrong. Haha, ha… I'm okay, I swear 😰
Tumblr media
...
HOW THE FLOOF AM I SUPPOSED TO BE CHILL AFTER THIS, HUH?
Okay, two theories. I'm okay, I swear, my blood pressure is just fine.
Theory number 1. Twilight gets Yuri shot on some of his limbs, probably one of his legs, so our spy can buy time, run to encounter the others Wise's agents and hide. Gladly, he can aim just on the spot when no much damage is made to Yuri, even though the spy is extremely nervous. Twillight was totally not expecting to find him on that corner, and he knows that doing something so serious like UNALIVING HER WIFE'S BROTHER will tear her apart. Why else he would waver? He is the best spy of Westalis. He doesn't hesitate, but this is different.
Theory number 2. Which I believe is less likely, but still possible, Yuri gets our incredible Spy shot on some area of his body where the disguise falls off, and he realizes Twillight and Loid are the same person, but he does nothing about it, at least not for a while. Making him and the spy share this major secret for a while, due to numerous reasons, but mainly to protect Yor and take her out of her position as Loid's wife safely. But as I said, I find unlikely to Yuri shoot TwiTwi, even though the latter is quite nervous and might not dodge the shot. Besides the fact Loid has his arm aimed at Yuri first, while Yuri has his arm sideways, which gives Twilight an advantage in time.
Be sure to talk to me in the comments, I would love to hear what you guys think. Moving on to the last past of the chapter.
Tumblr media
Lady Yor! Our grownup baby! She is still with the same outfit and hair down, so I assume it's late at night or afternoon, maybe Anya is already home or at a sleepover with Becky? Not sure.
Our poor girl is nervous due to Yuri filling her thoughts with the possibility of Loid cheating (which is dumb as floof, because he is a loyal boy) but still, even sober, Yor is worried. She cares about this family so much it probably hurts and confuses her. Her face on the left gave me chills, so much is going through her mind, almost if she senses something is wrong.
Tumblr media
So. Much. Blood. I'm. Nervous. I. Can't. Breath. Properly. What. Was. This? Whose blood is this? (Not Yor's, I assume). I always count the days till the next chapter, but for this one, I'll be in severe mental pain until its release date. My mind racing like Yor's, wondering if Loid will come home late or come home at all.
I keep imagining scenarios where one of the boys gets shoot and the aftermath of that, Loid or Yuri at the hospital or being held by their organizations in order to get intel from them, Yor drying with worry, there are so many possibilities. This arc has been the most intense so far, for me, at least. I don't know how I will cope till June 26th.
What do you guys thinking? If my heart survived until now, yours will! Make sure to like, reblog and support my work here on Tumblr, I really appreciate it. Now I will rest, cause that chapter was (hell) difficult 🌹 (this post will be reviewed soon, so if you encounter any grammar or spelling mistakes, forgive my bilingual mess self)

Why ‘Last Date’ is the my favorite Ataru focused chapter - An Analysis 🧐 (Long Post)
Hai there, hope you’re having a great day! Today on ‘Yuca Analyzes Silly Things (For No Reason)’,  we’ll be talking about what I believe to be the best Ataru storyline written, which is ‘Chapter 247: Last Date’.
Note: All of the facts and evidence and such are taken from the manga because: a) it’s the canon source, b) the og anime changes a lot in relation to the story and character to the point it isn’t consistent and c) it hasn’t been adapted in the remake (yet…).
Also, We’re going to be analyzing this chapter according to the story progression, so we’re going page by page. I’ll skip the bits which don’t need analysis and focus on the ones that do.
With all of that aside, let’s begin!
Tumblr media
The chapter starts of with Nozomi’s (The ghost girl) diary entry of the ‘wonderful gentleman’ she admires from her window…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To those who aren’t aware of how this chapter was pushed into existence, here’s a bit from an interview with Takahashi’s editor at the time, Tomofumi Arito:
Tumblr media
First up, I like how Nozomi falls for Ataru. Because of Ataru’s flirtatious and womanizing habits, women can easily understand how he is from meeting him. But in Nozomi’s case, since she could’ve only seen Ataru from her window (and here we’re assuming he hasn’t flirted at all from where she can see), all she sees is a young man who’s very energetic and happy, in contrast to her who is sick and unwell. This small part of his personality (even if it is fueled by his lust to chase women, but she doesn’t know that…) has managed to capture her heart. It’s quite difficult to write an everyday woman to fall for someone like Ataru (Lum is not an everyday woman, is she?), so to make the woman who falls for him someone who couldn’t get close to him and only observe him from afar, and only a little bit because of personal restrictions is basically a small but genius writing move from Takahashi’- sensei’s part. Also, Fun fact: Nozomi’s name means ‘Hope’, which is pretty symbolic as well. Moving on…
Tumblr media
Now we’ll skip to the part where Nozomi asks Ataru to wear the sweater she knit him (on a very hot day)…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of those times where Ataru’s kinder side shows through, it’s a pretty obvious scenario to understand however it’s a bit deeper than just that… You see back in the three parter storyline ‘O, Rain! Rain and Rain More!’, Ataru had the choice to go on date a very beautiful girl to free her from a curse of a rain spirit. He accepted to do this very kind deed, but his intentions weren’t the purest…
Tumblr media
Compare that with this chapter (which takes place around 150 chapters later), You can see that Ataru’s doing a kind deed again, but unlike last time, he has absolutely nothing to gain from it: He goes on a date with a cute ghost girl but he can’t enjoy it because it’s too hot and after the date is successful, she’ll end up resting in peace, so he can’t be lovers with her. Yet, he still goes on this date because he felt sorry for poor Nozomi and he didn’t want to disappoint her. Now that’s what I call ‘👏 Character Development!! 👏’
Now we take a small break from analyzing the Ataru stuff, because there’s something else I love in this chapter which I want to point out… and that is…
Tumblr media
…Lum
Okay, so what I love about Lum in this chapter is how the usual jealous girl acts towards the whole situation. When she hears Sakura request Ataru to go on a date, she was pretty mad. But when she sees that he was supposed to go on a date with a ghost so she would rest in peace, she understood the gravity of the situation and that it was to help someone instead of being jealous like usual. She even tried persuading him to wear the sweater when he initially refused..
Tumblr media
It really shows how much Lum has grown from her antagonist days (Oh, and if you were wondering she wasn’t jealous in the rain girl chapter as well, which just means character development struck her quite early). This is also one of those things which is only there in the manga, the original anime adaptation has extra scenes of her being jealous and being mad at Ataru for going on the date and making her seem unsympathetic (even though the persuading scene from above was still left intact? Like, what was even the point?) I’m sorry for rambling, this change just pisses me off so much, like even Sakura points out her behavior in the episode… …Now, back to Ataru!
The next thing we’ll talk about is the end of the date and when Nozomi finally rests in peace…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, I find it so sweet how Ataru’s expression changes as Nozomi fades away, you can really see that she has made an impression on him, and of course the last three panels… Ataru stating that he’ll wear those a bit longer, despite how hot it must’ve been, because he didn’t have the heart to take it off is so damn sweet and cute… and from that we go into the final page of the chapter…
Tumblr media
I Love This Page. No, seriously, if I could pick my favorite page from the manga, this is it.
I love how Ataru visits Nozomi’s grave later on, he didn’t have to, yet he still did it anyways. That was very thoughtful of him. Not everyone would go to the grave of someone who they have never seen before in their life till a single date.
I love how Lum calls him ‘kind’, Ataru rarely receives genuine compliments and he very well deserved this one.
I love how Ataru’s reaction to Lum’s words, he doesn’t usually get genuine compliments but he acts like it no big deal and that it’s something anyone will do (There are some people who wouldn’t), compared to his usually selfish demeanor.
I love the way Lum looks at Ataru, a gaze filled with love 💕.
I love how Lum wishes to be a ghost so she could be treated the same way Nozomi was, that just shows how much she wants Ataru to show his love.
I love how Ataru calls her stupid right after that because her being a ghost would mean that he would lose her and that’s the last thing he would want and finally…
I love the bittersweet feeling this page leaves me with. Usually every time a chapter ends with a sweet moment between Ataru and Lum, I feel soft and happy. This is one makes me feels kinda soft because of Ataru’s kindness, kinda sad because Lum wants Ataru to open up his feelings so much that she wished to be a ghost and kinda happy because Ataru calling her stupid reassures her that in the sense he does care for her. No other page really makes me feel like this. It gives me chills. Even Takahashi- Sensei has stated that this page ‘made a tingle run up her spine’ while drawing it, to quote from the continuation of the interview from above as stated by Arito- San:
Tumblr media
In conclusion, ‘Last Date’ is my favorite Ataru focused chapter because of how Ataru’s portrayed in it, It’s a chapter, which shows how much he has grown from how he was before. It shows that Ataru can kind and caring to anyone. I also like how this chapter as a whole doesn’t focus on Ataru and Lum’s relationship but rather Ataru’s character instead. I wholeheartedly believe the reason Ataru has changed as a person was because of Lum’s love for him and his caring nature for her has expanded towards others as time went on. It’s exactly how you write a romantic relationship: their main character trait isn’t the other person, instead they both leave a positive impact on each other so the other grows, as in they are strong as individuals, but it’s only because of the other. They are written with that in mind and that’s why I love them 💕. Thanks for taking time to read this analysis and I hope I was able to show you why I love this chapter so much. I hope I managed to do this chapter justice because it’s amazing. Thanks to everyone who voted for the poll I held before, and those who voted for the other options, don’t worry I’ll eventually get to them as well. I also apologize if I’ve overlooked anything or made any mistakes. !Mercenary Enrollment Chapter 169 Spoilers!
The translations are still pretty bad rn but I think we're getting really close to the arc where Ijin gets exposed.
From what I understand, the President of SW (Granpda Shin) is now going on an overseas trip. I'm going to assume it has something to do with the Vorrei family (you know Sophia and her bro) cause there was no mention of a contract being finalized between them and SW when they visited Korea so that might be what's happening now. From what the guy with black hair from Iron said and what we've seen, they've been trying to get in SW's way for quite a while because SW is getting bold in its expansion and as such, is facing retaliation from other companies. Iron got Forest to send Anna and Alice in an attempt to thwart SW however, they failed on both fronts. The black-haired Iron dude is working for someone and they're obviously disappointed with his failures however, a new opportunity presents itself which will allow him to make up for it.
SW security will be working with outside help-- another team in order to strengthen security measures thanks to all the shit happening (Yeona and Jiyeh's kidnapping, Sophia almost getting kidnapped again). And that team just happens to be from Forest as it was revealed. They'll be sending Alice who is on probation, under the threat that they'll kill her brother if she doesn't behave.
Now I'm sticking to my guns, 003 is working with Iron and that's why the Iron black-haired guy believes their plan, whatever it is, will work this time. Forest may not be working with her like I once believed since Scar guy doesn't seem to know who she is when she waltzed in like she owned the place lol but I still think she's working with Iron and she's the ace up their sleeve. Forest is being forced to work with her this time since Iron commanded it but they aren't happy about it. She will be a part of this team along with Alice.
I'm really curious to see how these two will interact-- a girl who thinks only about herself and her well-being and another who sacrifices herself to let her little brother live a normal life, even if she didn't get to be a part of that life. Plus, I wanna see more interactions between the girls in this manhwa there are wayyyy too little girl characters.
Anyways with 003 on the team that will be working with SW, she and Ijin will obviously cross paths and that's why the fact that he is 001 and 001 is alive will be discovered by Iron, who are obviously trying to get rid of all the numbers. Maybe she'll be ordered to kill him, make it look like an accident while completing whatever mission they have planned to harm SW and Grandpa Shin. Two birds with one stone.
Given what I've seen, 003 hates Ijin. I'm not entirely sure why but @seasilver17 mentioned on Discord that she might have been from the faction of ppl who wanted 002 to be given the rank of 001 because she could manipulate him more easily than she did Ijin and when Ijin was appointed 001, she had way less control over the numbers. Or something like that.
Either way, she hates him and obviously knows he's alive because she let him go, so I'm curious to see more of what she thinks about him. He obviously didn't have a bad impression of her and felt betrayed when he found out that she was the one to kill the numbers. I really wanna know more about her and what she's been doing
And Happy New Year! 🥳🥳🥳

The Wen Sibling and their family are NOT Prisoner of War.
They were called the Wen remnants, not the war prisoner even in Canon.
MDZS chapter 72 (from exiledrebel):
Wei Wuxian, "You definitely remember him. Last month, when you were night-hunting in the area of Ganquan, you chased an eight-winged bat king to the gathering place or the detention camp of the Wen Sect's remnants and brought a group of the Wen Sect's disciples The one in the lead was him. "
Here, they were not called the Prisoner of War. They were the remnants of the previous Wen Sect, and some of them still have the identity of Wen disciples.
The place they were gathered together may be called a detention camp, but it is not the prison where you must do labor for others. It is further explained here:
After the Sunshot Campaign, the QishanWen Sect was destroyed. The territory that it was expanding was shared among the other sects. The Ganquan area was appointed to the Lanling Jin Sect. As for the remnants of the Wen Sect, they were herded into a small corner of Qishan, not even a thousandth the territory it once owned. They were crammed into the place and struggled to live.
They were driven to live into a small corner of Qishan, and struggled to live , yes. But not being imprisoned and become the prisoner of war.
The proof for their identity is the next explanation:
Wei Wuxian, "Fine, I don't mind explaining it in greater detail. You couldn't catch the bat king and happened to run into a few of the Wen Sect's disciples who were there to investigate the same thing. And so, you threatened them to carry spirit-attraction flags to be your bait. They didn't dare do it. One person stepped out and tried to reason with you That's the Wen Ning I m talking about. After some delay, the bat king got away. You beat up the Wen cultivators, took them away by force, and the group disappeared. Do I need to say any more details? They still haven't returned yet Apart from you, don't know who in the world I could possibly ask.
They are originally not prisoners who were forced to do labor for the winning party.
They are originally still a disciple, a normal cultivators, who could still have the privilege to even nighthunting on their own..... Until they were forcibly captured by Jin Zixun!!
As for the real prisoner of War, they were put in Qiongqi Path from the very end of the war. Look at this passage:
Now that the Lanling Jin Sect had taken over the Qiongqi Path, of course it couldn't let the QishanWen Sects glorious past continue to exist. It was in the middle of reconstruction, meaning that all of the reliefs on both sides would be chiselled down and new ones would be carved. Naturally, in the end, it'd be given a new name that'd emphasize the Lanlinglin Sect's gallantry.
Such a large-scale undertaking would need many laborers for sure. And, as for these laborers, of course there were no better candidates than the Wen Sects prisoners of war, who had become homeless dogs after the Sunshot Campaign.
Wen Qing, Wen Ning and their family branch were not Prisoner of War. They are just the remaining people of the Wen Sect.
They are not homeless but lived in Ganquan, despite the small corner they have.
As for the reason why they didn't get classified as the Prisoner of War. Lan Xichen has said it on MDZS chapter 73:
Lan Xichen responded a moment later, "I have heard of Wen Qing's name a few times. I do not remember her having participated in any of the Sunshot Campaign's crimes."
Here. Lan Xichen as one of the Leaders in the Sunshot Campaign has verified it.
Wen Qing is the leader of her own family branch, when she didn't participated in war crimes, naturally her followers wouldn't.
Not only did LXC verified it, Wen Qing herself has said it on MDZS chapter 60:
Wen Qing cut him off, "What the Wen Sect does doesn't represent what we do. We don't need to be responsible for the Wen Sect's wrongdoing. Wei Ying, there's no need to look at me like that. There's a beginning to all debts. I'm the office leader of Yiling but I was ordered to take the position. I'm a medic, an apothecary, I've never killed anyone, much less touched the blood of the Jiang Sect."
It was true. Nobody had heard of any lives lost by Wen Qing's hands. There were always many cases that people wanted her to take over. It was because Wen Qing was one of the Wen Sect's people whose way of doing thing was actually normal.
At times, she could even put in a few good words for people in front of Wen RuoHan.
Her reputation had always been good!
Here is the verification from both Wen Qing and the narration from MXTX herself.
And it's also to refute what Nie Mingjue said about Wen Qing never trying to speak against Wen RuoHan.
Yes, Wen Qing at times even put in a few good words for people. But obviously not when Wen RuoHan has already decided, determined, and already started long ago, to dominate the other sects.
But anyway, Wen siblings and their family are not Prisoner of War, originally!

I want to talk about vnc chapter 12/episode 7
Why? Because I need to finally rant so just bare with me *inhales* WHAT THE SHIT IS THIS I DON’T THINK WE LOSE OUR MINDS ENOUGH
Tumblr media
I almost want to go panel by panel bc I still can’t believe this chapter exists. When I’m seriously interpreting/analyzing something in a series I try to look from an objective POV. Basically I push aside my shipper heart to see what the author is trying to do canonically. But every time I go back to this specific chapter, the only thing I get out of it is that Noé is going to fall in love with Vanitas. And for the first time, I feel like this is a possibility that could actually happen and that’s crazy. So okay let me go slowly bc what?!!!
First of all, the chapter frames Noé, Vanitas, and Jeanne in certain perspectives quite oddly. The anime does too so that’s why some believe Noé likes Jeanne instead. Which kinda doesn’t make sense for a number of reasons. Now there can definitely be some vampiric connection between the two.
Tumblr media
But in terms of romantic interest, it doesn’t add up. Hell we’re 40 + chapters ahead of this one and I can count on my fingers how many lines they’ve said to each other. So if Noé liked Jeanne, it definitely would’ve come back into play by now. After Vani and Jeanne run off, Noé goes after them immediately. And given we’ve seen how fast he is, it’s most likely he heard and also saw their encounter. Meaning Noé knows 1) the uncertainty of Jeanne being a curse-bearer or not 2) her deal with sucking only Vanitas’ blood.
Now mind you, this was 44 chapters ago and Noé still has not told anyone this. Going back to him being good at keeping secrets but that’s it’s own topic. Then he gets this sad look on his face. Now what he ends up telling Domi is the truth. And I want to be more clear on this. I do not think at this point in the story Noé loves Vanitas. It’s more so how this chapter ends is what leaves me stunned but we’ll get there. Plus the fact that Domi, till now, thinks Noé likes Jeanne IS VERY PROOF THAT’S NOT THE CASE.
Tumblr media
So when you do the process of elimination, Vanitas is the only logical answer!!! And this freaking line. This is a strong statement for someone whose only upset about a missed opportunity to taste some blood.
His heart was in pain. WHAT THE FUCK
Tumblr media
But that’s the thing. Noé doesn’t lie. But he omits A LOT. It also can be that he just doesn’t fully understand so his mind jumps to the obvious conclusion. But if he does think there’s more to it, Noé didn’t tell Domi. Now we get the real meat of it all. Oh my lord so Noé poses the question: Why don’t Vanitas dance with Jeanne? And Vanitas gives the excuse that he’ll accidentally step on her. We later find out he can dance just fine, so perhaps a part of him is already giving distance. Not willing to be close to Jeanne beyond teasing.
Now...MOCHIJUN DID NOT HAVE TO DRAW IT LIKE THIS. She could’ve had Noé smiling and pull Vanitas in to dance without any close-ups. She could’ve made it a silly moment but no, we are meant to take this scene seriously
Tumblr media
I’ve noticed Noé has a number of scenes that there’s a small panel to the side where his eyes are covered. And I think a lot of the time it was a moment involving Vani. It gives off the impression that Noé is feeling something the author doesn’t want to make obvious.
Tumblr media
And then we get the fucking line. Let’s say I’m reading this all wrong. The fact that mochijun has her two male protagonists dancing together as one asks ‘what is love?’ Is proof that she is at the very least, not unwilling to go there. LIKE DO WE KNOW HOW WILD THIS REALLY IS? I truly believe the fandom accepted this moment way too casually.
Tumblr media
Noé asking almost contemplative what Vanitas sees in Jeanne. Remember he knows Vanitas wants Jeanne to suck only his blood. He is confused why Vanitas suddenly gravitates to Jeanne. Vanitas lists his reasons, one that includes that she’ll never love him back. Noé is rightfully confused by this but Vanitas states that she doesn’t have to love him back. If mochijun wants to go the romantic route for Noe’s ‘love’ IT WILL BE EXACTLY THIS. Because if she goes the romantic direction. First and foremost, I will have the highest respect for this woman bc I know she must’ve entered a battlefield for that to happen. But more so, if my interpretation of all this is right. Noé may never tell Vanitas. Think about it.
Tumblr media
Noé believes Vanitas loves Jeanne. So out of kindness for Vani’s happiness, he wouldn’t say anything. That’s just the type of person Noé is. But also, the amount of effort, time, and vulnerability it took for Noé to get as close as he is with Vani. You think he’s going to risk jeopardizing ALL of that? And that’s the tragedy and beauty of it all. Vanitas doesn’t have to know that Noé loves him. No one has to know. But if again, this possibility is canon, we the audience know it’s going to be a inevitable regret down the line.
Finally the chapter concludes with future Noé narrating how this feeling will be a mystery for quite some time. I’d like to point out how Vanitas didn’t dance with Jeanne in fear of stepping on her toes but Noé does exactly that to him. Honestly my second favorite chapter. It felt like seeds were being planted for them to sprout into fruition later on. So many little details felt purposeful and it was the moment I really believed in vnc’s writing.

Chapter 198
I've wanted a Christmas filler chapter for a while, just because I think it would have some great phantomfam interactions + some snide comments from Sebastian about how useless God is or whatever he likes to brag about... but I know we may never get that, so I am over the moon with this image here. this is all I need😫 Ciel's scarf bow is our Christmas present.
Tumblr media
and Ciel gets a muff too FINALLY☺️. it seems that once again yana really doesn't care about the fact that she's giving him predominantly female gendered clothing for the time era(as far as I know), but when has she ever cared. let's just congratulate Sebastian on his good parenting and feminism. or rather in this case, traditional values?.... mhm
it's just adorable.
...
we also got weird interactions like this:
Tumblr media
yea Theo knows. and he angry. the real question is if in the end, he'll help the others escape their fledging day(most likely O!ciel's aptitude) or simply work to save himself(most likely R!ciel's aptitude).
Tumblr media
finny is the best possible boy though, and who knows maybe this will all be solved by the power of friendship and Theo will ultimately put his trust in team O!ciel. that would be great!
...
;_;
Tumblr media
this truly makes me so upset, it's not fair for Mabel to feel anything other than bittersweetness that her friend is leaving, rather than agony. same goes for everyone else.
Tumblr media
....
these 2 kids are strong and it's is pretty odd, but I guess when compared to other characters like Jane, it's not too surprising...
Tumblr media
maybe Doll gave them circus training, who knows. Mabel most likely, since Doll spends most time with her group, at least I'm assuming from the clothes.
also, I'm not a knife expert but those look like something they probably just plucked from the kitchen. if doll is with them, she isn't giving them special weapons like Layla owned. that's probably just a kitchen knife the "collie class" have access to.
...
honestly, I've tried so far to be very suspicious and hostile towards these kids in the hope that they'll get to walk away into the sunset like the possible side antagonists they are. but really, I'm just very much hoping that they don't end up going through any pain. I don't want any more serious moments where children cry, please...
Tumblr media
so the ambush, why did this happen: I'm guessing that these kids don't just guarding the hallway regularly, and they just so happened to run into Finny today. my guess is that they knew/found out that Finny would sneak around(probably with Doll's insight? cause this is his first night!) and quickly prepared for him. but most importantly, they must know one way or another that the orphanage staff(or Doll?) is prepared to kill Finny soon.
what's most surprising to me is that these kids want Finny alive. idk about the other kids, but I think plenty of us assumed that Theo would rather have Finny(and snake) disposed of. so either I was wrong, or what's going on here is a manipulation scheme where Theo makes Finny think that he's in danger, simply so that he can use him. this makes more sense to me because if both Finny and Snake were in immediate danger, they would probably wake up Snake, too. after all, Theo is a pomeranian, he could think of such a thing. in this case the kids may be working for Doll.
if however this isn't a scheme and instead a genuine attempt to help finny and Snake, then they probably aren't working with Doll, since she probably wouldn't want to sneak them into the inner working of the facility.
ah idk, well find out next chapter. or, the whole next chapter will be spent walking to the meet up room. maybe finny will start flashbacks right there right now. who knows.
where should I place my bets, that these kids are gonna take Finny back to some secret hide out room(possible blood drawing), or are they gonna take him back to where Doll is cause they're working with her...
...
also, it's really interesting how these two stay in "character" right here, both in the typical pose of the person/role they're mocking.
...
actually you know what, Theo probably figured that Finny was worth being recruited after this right here:
Tumblr media
sorry, long post today, lots to worry about, and if you read all this then you mean the world to me! have a great day!

Live reaction of chapter 145 brought to you by yours truly on one half working neuron ✨ (some spoilers here and there from upcoming chapters so beware!)
Penelope looks so sickly, the bags under her eyes are so unsettling, no wonder Callisto lost it and tried to drag her to the palace when he took notice of her condition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She stayed up all night overthinking and couldn’t catch a moment of sleep after confirming her suspicions that Ivonne is indeed the Laila and she wasn’t mistaken on Soleil…she is exhausted and ready to give up, free my girl she went through enough 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn’t think it would be possible but her wrists are even thinner than last time…PENELOPE GET BEHIND ME. I’ll protect you from these stinky men eugh🤺🤺🤺
Callisto tends to be really headstrong and protective when it comes to Penelope, but despite being very over the top on different occasions he was not exaggerating with this one. He had a good reason to lose it *sobbing*
like. her wrist are shaped like scrawny twigs 😭 Penelope I love you, but please eat
Tumblr media
FEAR NOT CALLISTO IS HERE TO SAVE THE DAY 🗣️🦅
I really like that she actually called Callisto by name instead of his title again, this is the first time she calls him by name out loud 🥹
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s always his golden hair that she notices first, she’s so real for that. Penelope probably has a hidden fantasy of running her fingers through his hair, who wouldn’t tbh
Tumblr media
AUGH he looks so soft here, I cannot comprehend how Penelope managed to restrain herself from yanking him down and kissing him, in her place I would’ve done that a looong time ago
Tumblr media
It’s this scene from chapter 161 of the novel, I can’t believe we’ve come this far, this scene is finally getting illustrated. Still feels like a fever dream 😭😭
Snippet from novel chapter 161:
Arm still covering my eyes, I called irritably, "I said to let no one in."
"Does that include a member of the imperial family?"
The voice belonged to someone I hadn't been expecting to hear. I quickly lowered my arm, the sudden light stinging my eyes. I could make out his luxurious golden hair and ruby-red eyes, even as my vision blurred, trying to adjust.
"Callisto?"
I wondered if I was dreaming as I stared blankly up at the man in front of me. His ruby eyes suddenly darted downwards until they were much closer to my face, and his golden hair was tickling my forehead.
He scrunched up his nose, "I can't have you waking up already. I haven't even kissed you yet." His laughing baritone was loud and clear thanks to our close proximity and his words jolted me to attention.
Tumblr media
I will print this panel and plaster it on my wall so it can be the first thing I see when I wake up. Father and mother are back to serve us the most delicious, toe-curling, gut-wrenching angst
There’s a certain appeal in knowing we’ll get Callisto ins shambles in the next chapter. He will be so angry too, can’t wait for his new range of expressions, Suol is going so hard with these last few chapters, literally feeding us with masterpiece after masterpiece ✨🤭
Y’all better get your ibuprofen ready because we’re suffering from now on, and it’s only suffering, hurt no comfort type of thing. The coming of age scene where Penelope collapsed will be in about 7/8 chapters at most so we’ll be served angst continuously ✨🫶

Ch211 (p3), Take us to your master
Artie and Theo get Finny to the surface. Finny isn't sure why they bothered to save him, but Artie has a point: they still need him. Even if it's just instructions on what's next. Or where his master should be waiting for a report. Theo just wants Finny to conserve his energy.
Tumblr media
Oliver helps Finny out of the water, which is quite different from how Finny pushed Oliver in. Finny thanks him, and Oliver just goes right in for a hug. For a brief moment, Finny smiles a bit.
But Theo gets right down to business. They don't have their evidence anymore, but they have a lot of information.
Tumblr media
There's no reason to report to the police or the Yard anymore. So, Theo wants to go straight to our earl and Sebastian to make the report.
Tumblr media
Idk if they are looking at the orphanage for a moment or if they are already walking away, but Finny notices the nearby windpump and recalls arriving there, just recently, with Snake... and it makes him cry.
Tumblr media
One good thing about the staff waiting down there is they won't see the kids return but will assume they have drowned. They might keep someone down there (like in shifts) to wait for bodies to surface, but none will. Still, they will probably think the bodies are there and just stuck at the grating or something. No one from the orphanage will be looking for them outside... unless one of them finally discovers the busted grate.
I was hoping they would destroy the windpump and flood the underground facility, but it looks like they are focused on making a report and perhaps returning with reinforcements.
The chapter isn't over just yet. One more part to go.

Analysis of the Rock Scene: idealisation and realisation
AN: This is a purely personal point of view on this scene and on the characterisation of both Jellal and Erza. That is how I personally analyse them and, thus, comprehend this scene. I don’t see myself as an expert on those matters. I’m curious to hear your thoughts!
It is in chapter 264: Only the Amount of Time Lost that the rock scene happens. The title itself guides us to an important thought on the matter. Erza and Jellal’s relationship is built on crossing paths and losing time. Fate is hard on them and the most time they spent together was as child slaves. It is unknown when they met exactly. In canon, we only know that Erza was banished at the age of 11 – I personally believe that they shared the same age; ergo, Jellal was 11 too.
We can suppose that the two children spent some years together at the time – my personal headcanon is two years as Erza arrived around the age of 9, this age was deduced by Mashima’s style when he draws children. When Erza saved Kagura who is 3 years younger than her, her appearance was similar to Sho and Millianna’s during the revolt, and the children were 9. It also coincides with Kagura’s ability to survive on her own at a young age, as she would have been 6. That is already quite young and unrealistic (I do not take August into account in this thought even if the man survived on his own since he was a mere infant).
Two years as children against eight where she was banished and pressured. They met sometime during those eight years at the Council while he was under the persona of Siegrain – it is said that she even attacked him at first, before believing the lie that he was Jellal’s twin. This is another important piece of information. It supposes that this lie was believable because she had no way to know if it was the truth or not. Therefore, Jellal never talked about his family before his enslavement to Erza – an important detail, that we will come back to later.
Of course, they meet in person, as themselves again, during the Tower of Heaven arc, the Nirvana arc and finally in this scene. Death is always the reason for their partings. In the ToH arc, Jellal fuses with Etherion and it is believed that he died doing so. In the Nirvana arc, he is arrested and it is stated that he will either have a life sentence or the death penalty. While I always thought that his sentence was open to interpretation, it is said in chapter 263 that he was indeed sentenced to death.
As I said, fate does not work on their side. Most of their relationship was built as children, from 9 to 11. Yet, during the rock scene, Erza is 19 and Jellal is 26. It had been 8 years for her, 15 for him.
Tumblr media
The scene begins with a shot of a turtle passing by and complete silence. Erza is the one to speak first, asking about his memories. Jellal had retrograde and episodic amnesia. Retrograde amnesia means that he was unable to access his memories before the incident – here, his fusion with Etherion. Episodic amnesia means that he had access to his knowledge (semantic memory), but not his memories (episodic memory). We can suppose that the cause was damage to areas of his brain that are vital for memory processing, damage due to his fusion. Nonetheless, amnesia is a very traumatic experience. He started to regain his memory 6 years ago in prison (chapter 263), it supposes that it was a long process which is realistic. We actually tend to retrieve the oldest memories first rather than the recent ones. That is a sad concept, meaning that Jellal remembered his time as a slave in prison before his time as a “free” man, controlled and brainwashed by Ultear really (chapter 263; chapter 102)
Tumblr media
The first question Erza asks when it comes to his memories is a question about Simon. To which he bluntly answers “I killed him” after a short pause. Followed by that, Erza avoids the subject and asks about Nirvana, to which Jellal answers that he also remembers all of that – “I remember it… as if it were a self I had forgotten. It is a strange feeling”. While the translation may be a little clumsy, the idea of a forgotten self is very important. Whose self is Jellal talking about? Erza get it right away as she asks “So I can think of you as your old self?” Jellal’s child self is the Jellal Erza knows the most, she spent more time with him than any other version of the man. He is the Jellal she misses the most and always did, since her banishment. But Jellal here associates this self with a forgotten entity. To Jellal, his child self is someone he no longer is, someone who disappeared years ago in the torture room when Zeref’s ghost, Ultear really, brainwashed him. The brainwashing was the disappearance of the Jellal Erza still misses. This Jellal does not exist anymore.
Nonetheless, Jellal confesses that her seeing him as his old self would make him happy. He knows that this person does not exist anymore, but he too misses how things were, how Erza was with him back then, that is what would make him happy.
Yet he adds that he would “understand if she wanted to keep her distance from him” after all that happened because to him it is the normal reaction. To avoid getting hurt, you avoid the source of the pain. Jellal is someone who does that all the time, he is a person who prefers to avoid people rather than hurt them – he does not give them the free will to avoid him or not, he is the one making the choice for them.
This comment is followed by silence. Erza is looking at him but he is looking at the ground. Not even once in this scene, Jellal will look at Erza. He is either looking at the ground or looking away. We turn our eyes to where our body wants to go and what our minds want to engage with, Jellal does not want to have this conversation but it is a needed one and he knows that. The last time they talked on a deep level was 15 years ago as children. It is also a way for him to ignore her presence, he is speaking on an emotional level, letting out things he never said. Looking away is a way to continue speaking without feeling overwhelmed, and Jellal is overwhelmed because it is the first time, he is talking to her about the core of his emotions.
He is sitting down and she is standing. He is avoiding eye contact and she is looking at him. She is the one asking the questions. Here Erza is dominating the discussion. Jellal put himself in the position of submission and demonstrates that he is defenceless. This is directly linked to what he says next.
Tumblr media
While Erza is here to talk, Jellal came to let her take his life. It is also why he is so open to talk when he obviously does not want to. For him, it could be his last words. Though, we may wonder why Jellal believes in the first place that Erza would want to take revenge. Jellal went through one year of imprisonment where he was treated like the worst thing on Earth, starved and tortured for others’ fun. He internalised the fact that he deserves everything he went through. What he wants was never considered, not even once in his life. He was a child slave with no free will, he got controlled and fooled by someone he believed to be his friend, he was forced to live by Erza and he got taken out of prison by Ultear against his will. Here, Jellal believes that everyone hates him to some extent, and I would not be surprised if he believed that even Ultear does – as his existence is a reminder of what she did, increasing her guilt every time she sees him. Why would Erza be different? She told him to live with the guilt during the Nirvana arc, forcing him to live to pay for what he did. To him, Erza still resents what he did and he has every reason to believe so. After all, even if Ultear declared that she was the one who controlled him, Erza did not contradict him when he said that he killed Simon earlier.
Those are two important beliefs that Jellal internalised, one: everyone hates him to some extent, two: the only way to fix it is to let them take revenge (beating, starving, killing, etc…)
Erza then asks if he thinks that is what Simon would that. And Jellal does not answer. Truly, he cannot. As children, Simon was jealous of him because Erza loved him, and as adults, he ruined the man’s life by keeping him on this cursed island and finally killing him. In canon, we never see any positive interaction between Jellal and Simon. So why would Jellal believe that Simon would be different? Why would Simon be the only one who would not want to kill him?
Tumblr media
Here, Erza points Jellal’s accomplishment: he created Crime Sorcière with Ultear and Meredy. I never liked how this scene make it sounds like it was only Jellal’s idea as I truly believe that it really was the three of them’s (and chapter 263 supports me on that). Crime Sorcière – at that point – had no guild master, they never needed one as they were only three. Though, here Erza believes that they set up this guild to right their wrongs. It is not exactly the case. Indeed, it is a key element of their work but as it was said in chapter 263:
Tumblr media
Crime Soricère’s goal is to destroy Zeref’s heritage. Dark guilds, R-Systems, and even Eclipse as we learn later, all come from Zeref. Zeref never intended to create those things with obscure intents, it is quite the opposite; he only wanted to bring back the little brother he lost. But to Jellal, Ultear and Meredy, all they know is that Zeref created all of that, and that people are blinded by what he represents to them. The world sees Zeref as a dark mage with vile intentions while it was never true. The cultists from the R-System along with Grimoire Heart are proof of what Zeref’s heritage can do. That is what Crime Soricière is seeking, they want to put an end to it all. Sadly, it is quite an optimistic and unrealisable goal – pure and brave – but unreachable. They can do their best of course, but Jellal is unhealthily fixated on that because that is what keeps him going, it became his sole reason to exist but this dream is obviously quite childish (again, we’ll come back to this).
The darkness Jellal is speaking of is not really darkness. By darkness, he means hatred, indoctrination, brainwashing, selfishness, and everything people can go through that makes them do wrong. The lack of supervision, or help, when someone is so low in life. Ultear was desperate and felt abandoned, Meredy got indoctrinated by Ultear, and Jellal felt so alone, scared, and powerless that his hatred became an opening for Ultear to brainwash him – all of that could have been avoided if there was someone, just one person for them. The world is cruel, but we can help one another. It is in the darkness that we become the worst of ourselves, just like in real life. That is what darkness means here. In some way, darkness just means the bad side of humankind, and everyone can fall into this darkness.
Their cause is way more complex than what is just said. Of course, by trying all of that, helping people as they can, they do better and ‘repent’ but they never chose to do so just for that – at least Jellal never did. Because Jellal truly believes that he is irredeemable – there is not even one trace of selfishness in his actions, he is not doing it to repent, he’s doing it so no one ends up like him.
And he speaks his mind, he does not know anymore. At first, he did it to feel better because he was eaten by guilt and felt like he selfishly fled his redemption – his death sentence. And the more he tries, the more he understands that in fact, it is not helping. He does not feel like it is because he still feels miserable. After her sacrifice, Ultear is finally at peace, but Jellal does not even feel like he’s getting close to this peace. He keeps ruminating on the past, on actions he committed in an illusion of free will. Why isn’t it working after 6 years? What is wrong with me? The reason is simple for that. Jellal is a victim, he never was truly guilty of everything that happened in the ToH. If anything, Jellal is quite the scapegoat everyone needs. It is easier to blame one person than ourselves. And that is what everyone does. They are blaming Jellal, who was an 11 child at the time, who went through days – maybe a week or so – of torture. Anyone would have lost their mind but the boy kept fighting as he could, he never would have done what he did if it was not for Ultear’s brainwashing and control. The proof of his innocence is evident when we learn that the first thing he did once freed from Ultear was fuse with Etherion, giving his life to save Erza, their old friends, and her new friends he did not even know. Jellal will never be able to make up for his crimes because there are no crimes he needs to make up for.
But back then, no one knew about Ultear, and people blamed him. And like I said earlier, he internalised all of it, he believes that the world hates him and that he deserves this hatred. “If you are prone to blame yourself, you leave yourself open for manipulation” (Jonathan Decker), by hating himself, Jellal is prone to believe everything people say. And what people say to him is that he should just die.
Tumblr media
This is the closest to Jellal’s heart we ever were and ever will be. Here he states his questionings, his pains and most importantly his suicidal thoughts. As we said before, as a child Jellal did not even speak about his family prior to his enslavement, so it is simple to imagine that he would not speak about his fears and pains. There are only two instances where he spoke this way. First, when he lied to Erza right before the Etherion blast, telling her that he was possessed by Zeref’s ghost – it was a lie (based on truth, as the best lies need to be somewhat true); second, right before his arrestation, as he confessed to Erza that he was scared of what would ensue.
Here, Jellal is the most honest and fragile he can be. He let out a pressure he has on his shoulders. He is lost, he is still the same as he was right after Nirvana – even after recollecting his memories. What will happen? What is he supposed to do? He has no idea, his dream is impersonal, and he is doing it for others, but as I said, this goal is also unreachable. No matter how hard he tries, it will never be enough. Because he cannot change the world alone. There is no catharsis possible here.
And since his childhood, the only thing seemingly reserved for him was death. Zeref’s ghost was a skull, to save Erza he had to sacrifice himself, everyone wants him dead since the ToH and that has not changed. At some point, he starts to believe it – because he is completely open to manipulation, and because if there is a thing, he hates more than darkness, it is himself.
When he lied to her back at the ToH, Erza shared his pain and hugged him. When he confessed his fear after defeating the Oracion Seis, Erza comforted him and promised to always be there for him. And when he finally tells her how he truly feels…
Tumblr media
Jellal internalised two beliefs. One: that everyone hates him to some extent. Two: that the only way to fix it is through revenge. And once again, those two beliefs are solidified in his mind, but this time by the person he trusts and loves the most.
That is why it is the last time Jellal will be that honest and fragile, because right when he opens his heart, he is met with violence once more. You can clearly see how shocked he is. And quickly, his face changes. He accepts it, he even understands it, and probably he thinks “I deserve it.”
To Erza, it is not as deep as that. Truly, I believe that hearing him say all of this scares her. Because she believed that she would never see him, that he would die – and when fate, for once in their whole life, gives them the chance to meet again and reconcile, it is him that brings up the topic and states that even in the most peaceful moment, death is lurking. Erza too had suicidal tendencies, it happened during ToH as she was ready to sacrifice herself. But she learned from that and understood that “You don’t die for your friends, you live for them.” It was her new motto and she was categoric about this.
“Cowardly tripe” is a hard way to put it. Is suicide the easy way out? Is it really something only the weak do? But then again, the word “coward” is more than important. To Erza, deciding to die rather than fight is a cowardly act.
It is important to remember that even if all the events of ToH, Nirvana and now this, are happening the same year for Erza; for Jellal, it had been 7 years. Erza sees him not trying enough, while Jellal is just giving it up as he already fought alone for 6 years. But they do not even put it into perspective, they do not understand that there is an important missing point here. Because they are both overwhelmed.
Tumblr media
He knows that she felt the same at some point – because of him. And that is why he defensively says “I’m not as strong as you!,” he isn’t even looking at her – he resembles a child getting lectured. As he wants to add something, “I am…” she cuts him off, continuing her tirade with a sudden movement that looks like she is ready to slap him once more.
“To fight to live one that is strength”, of course, it is. But Erza is off-topic. She is not talking to someone refusing a fight, she is talking to someone who is losing the fight, who fought for 6 years and is getting tired. And Jellal is not fighting anyone, Jellal is fighting suicidal thoughts and depression. When Erza had the same thoughts, she was stopped without violence, with cries and Natsu begging her to never do the same, she saw how important she was to others and she kept them close, she continued to be proved that everything was worth fighting for.
Jellal here is met by violence and screams, he is again held accountable. She does not try to understand the whys as it would be too scary and painful to her, as it would recall what she moved on to. Jellal is truly alone, he is surrounded by only two people, one of whom ruined his life. The world is against him. While Erza would have become a mage saint if she had died, Jellal’s death would be cheered on. She is actually projecting her fears on him, trying to help him the way she should have been helped – but it cannot work because even if the thoughts are the same, the reasons are nothing alike.
Tumblr media
And here we arrive at the reason why I did this post and why I choose this title. Because like I said earlier, the Jellal Erza knows the most is the boy he used to be, and he is the one she misses. By saying “You aren’t the Jellal I used to know” she is holding him accountable for his disappearance, for this change, as if Jellal wasn’t going to change with time. Everyone lost something during those 7 years: reputation, titles, or just mere time. For Lucy, it is her father and for Erza, it is the Jellal she used to know. And it is difficult, even if Jellal is still alive, he is not whom he used to be. Erza need to grieve the little boy she once knew; she has every right to. But she cannot except Jellal to be the same as he used to be, it is impossible but most importantly, it is not fair.
“That Jellal was always doing his utmost to live” is also a powerful statement. Because it is not entirely true and that’s where Erza is biased. Erza refuses to hear Jellal having suicidal thoughts, she refuses to accept that he is weaker than her because she sees in him the idealised version of the boy he was.
To understand that, we need to go back to their childhood. Erza and the others were the scared kids while Jellal was not. He was the leader of the group, the one who would comfort and stand for them, ready to get punished for their sake. And they all admired him for that. He had this image of a protector, of a safe person they could fully trust, and he needed to keep this image because if he were to break it, it would also break their hopes and dreams. They kept going because of him, he is the one who gave Erza the strength to try to escape, who told her to not be scared. He is the one who stood for Sho while the boy was whimpering. And finally, he is the one who went for Erza when she was in danger and told her to fight because there was no other way to live.
The imagery of “fighting to live” comes directly from him and that is the reason why she cannot stand seeing him give up so easily. But Jellal was not whom they believed he was. Jellal was an 11-year-old boy, a mere child who could not let them see his weaknesses and flaws because it would break them. Jellal was scared but because of this image he built himself, he had no one to comfort him. And that self-destructive behaviour is what led to his doom.
Tumblr media
In chapter 98, the truth is told. If Ultear brainwashed and controlled him so easily, it is because torture really did break him – he was scared and hurting, and no one came for him. The reason why Jellal ended up with his life ruined is that he desperately needed someone in dire times, and this someone had vile intent. Again, this is the darkness we talked about earlier. Nonetheless, all of that means one thing: Jellal has always been scared. He jolted and cried as he saw Erza’s mangled face, and he trembled when he was alone in the punishment room.
Jellal’s self-righteousness is what kept him going as a slave, he felt needed and useful – he had a goal of his own. Serving people while never being served, because of the image he built, is what made him who he was. But at the end of the day, Jellal needed to be helped, yet he had no one who could. He never spoke about his life prior his enslavement, he never talked about his emotions, he built himself his own armour – as a protector. Because as a protector, he needed to be strong, and that was his reason to not give up. Erza and the others were his strength and he cherished them so much that he could put himself in danger for them. Loving someone is putting their needs before our own, but putting their needs instead our own is unhealthy – but that is how the boy he used to be lived.
Jellal never was as strong as Erza thought he was. She only knew what he let her see, the image he built, the image of this strong and brave protector he deeply was not. Because he was a mere boy who just found a wicked way to keep going, to survive.
Of course, Jellal is not who he used to be. But he today is closer to who really was rather than this false image he gave them, and that is why Erza saying that Jellal is not the same hurt. Because he is not the same, but he’s not so far. “That Jellal was always doing his utmost to live” is true, but Jellal was not doing this for himself, he was doing that for them all. And he was ready to give his life for them (taking Sho’s and Erza’s place). Yet today, Millianna, Sho and Wally hate him, Simon is dead because of him, and Erza hit him as she understands that the boy she loves is in fact dead – or more precisely, that he never really existed.
And Jellal tells her: “You may be right.” Because it is the truth, he is not the boy she knew, because this boy was an illusion he entirely created. This boy was an idealised version of who he really was.
Tumblr media
But the pain is too strong, the grief is clearly there. It is the death of the boy she held dear, and realisation struck. Again, her response to this is violence. She takes him by the collar, she swears, and he closes his eyes – ready to be hit. He never was going to defend himself, as he said earlier, but he finally reaches for her as they fall – to protect her.
Tumblr media
Interestingly enough, Erza is part of the main cast which means that this chapter is focusing on her relationship with Jellal and not the other way around. And we can actually see it here, Jellal’s face is seen as a point of view, we are seeing him through Erza’s eyes. That is why the next panel isn’t what Jellal sees but Erza’s reaction.
Finally, Erza does not see the boy she used to know, this idealised version of an abused child. She realises what he truly is, the man he became. She must mourn the kid and accept the man so she can finally love him freely. “If you chose to love somebody, you’re choosing to love a different version every day, every month, every year. Because if you just love the original – you’re in love with somebody that doesn’t exist anymore” (Jonathan Decker), this quote works perfectly for Erza in this case. She cannot keep seeking someone Jellal no longer is.
Tumblr media
The tenderness of Jellal’s words, the realisation of the hurting man he has become, and the softness of his actions are what calms her. Jellal believes that Erza is always right because he has always followed her lead since Nirvana. He accepted his sentence because of her, “live with the guilt” is something he still does to this day – he is just getting exhausted by such a mission. But Erza knows she is not, her behaviour from earlier proves it, so she explains herself. “I know I’m clumsy” is such an important detail to what she says. She did not apologize but she acknowledges that her behaviour is not the best. Apologizing should have been done though, as no matter the gender, you do not hit your friend – especially when they are sharing their suicidal thoughts.
“I live as strong as I can” is such an Erza line. Erza is a strong woman, an incredible warrior, but she meets times where she feels fragile and weak, where she cries and trembles. And that is what makes her human. She’s just trying her best and never giving up, and she just wishes he could do the same. Actually, Erza doesn’t see herself as that strong, she knows her own flaws and weakness, which is why she stated earlier that we don’t need to be strong to live – she believes to be the perfect example of that.
Tumblr media
And he gets it. Because even if he is giving up, he fought for years alone. Yet now, he is not alone anymore. She is there, once again, and she forgave him.
When she says “I thought I’d never see you again” she finally breaks. That is why hearing his suicidal thoughts are so difficult for her. Because she never wanted to lose him, it is fate that kept taking him away from her. For him to say such things, means that death is now something he could bring to himself – while before, it was always against their will. Truly, Erza wants him to live, as selfish as it is, because she wants him by her side. Nothing more.
And he looks at her. He listens and understands. For 6 years, he believed her to be dead. “You don’t die for your friend; you live for them” but how can you if they are either dead or hates you? But now, they are together and he has no other excuses.
Seeing her crying and trembling is something he hates. Because she is crying because of him, again. It is why Natsu held such a grudge against him for so long. But this time, those tears are different, almost relieved. He probably does not understand it, and probably feels guilty just for seeing them. But Erza is not crying because he hurts her, she’s crying because he could have died – and she understands how lucky she is to have him here.
Tumblr media
Erza is the one reaching for the kiss. She needs it. First, she touches him, then she approaches their faces. And he follows her lead because he loves her, because it is what he wants, and because she is crying and needs comfort.
Tumblr media
Those two pages are beautiful. We see how they both evolved and grew, from childhood friends to enemies, from enemies to friends, and finally from friends to lovers. We see their struggles, their pains, everything they went through, yet here they are – still alive, safe and sound. As said before, this chapter is from Erza’s point of view, those are her thoughts. She is reminiscing everything and accepting little by little that the Jellal she knew has changed into the man she is about to kiss. He is not a stranger, but he is not a boy anymore. Here is her grieving whom he was and accepting who he is. And it is an important step to start loving him fully.
Tumblr media
But Jellal cannot. There are too many reasons why he cannot. He does not see himself as deserving, he just made her angry and cry, he despises himself and wouldn’t want to taint her – she walks in the light, and he walks in the darkness. He came here to let her take her revenge, not kiss her. In kissing her he would find pleasure, and he believes that he does not deserve this.
That is when he lies. A childish lie; because Jellal still has an innocent side in him. He is not his child self anymore, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t childish anymore. It is quite the opposite. His dream is childish: impersonal and unreachable, too optimistic. His vision of the world is simple: darkness and light, black and white. And finally: he lies like a child.
Tumblr media
He looks to the side, he blushes, he sweats and trembles. His lie is ridiculous, out of nowhere and unbelievable. Who would get engaged as a criminal? And to whom? Jellal lies like a child, horribly bad.
They are both quite a mess. It is at this moment that Erza acknowledges that 7 years have passed. And then she looks at him and sees who he truly is. And gentle man, quite childish, quite shy, yet so brave and devoted. And she smiles oh so tenderly at him because she realises that she does not have to love who he used to be, there is plenty to love here.
When she asks this question, she is talking about herself and he knows it. He stutters as he thought she would have a different reaction – closer to the one from earlier, but he receives finally what he truly needs: warmth.
Finally, “then you must live on for that person’s sake” only includes her. If you cannot live for the others, live for me. If you will not do it for yourself, do it for me. Erza finally says the word he needed to hear. And his face, his soft expression says it all, he still is not looking at her as it is too difficult for him, but he smiles. The first and only smile he gives her in this scene.
Tumblr media
To finish, I’ll talk about this page. It empathises with the fact that Erza knows that the fiancée thing is a lie.
And another important detail is “He’s always been a bad liar. At least, that part hasn’t changed.” As I said earlier Erza is grieving the old Jellal. We see her sigh and think “at least,” meaning that it is a comfort for her, she needed him to keep something from how he was, she needs to have something to hold on to, a familiarity in this man. And his behaviour, his horrible way of lying and his shy posture, reminded her of Jellal’s child self. We know that he never told her about his family because she believed in the Siegrain lie; if he had tried to lie about it back then, she would have known. This tells us a piece of sweet information about how things were for them back then, Jellal did try to lie to her as a child, but it never was about important things – if it was important, he would either say it or say nothing at all.
“It’s better this way. This is our answer.” Often, I see people taking those two sentences as Erza accepting their relationship status: nothing yet. But after all we have said, I believe it to be different. “It’s better this way”: Jellal being different from the idealised version of him she had. “This is our answer”: but we still love each other nonetheless.

My thoughts on Spy x Family Chapter 83
Needless to say, my folks, huge manga spoilers ahead 🌹
Tumblr media
Oh, boy, I was totally wrong! He he, but also, I got some things right!
Tumblr media
No more guns, thanks, Lord! What was this wait? I was anxious, trying to keep my head off the upcoming update, and It was successful, I relaxed a little bit and BOOM, Sunday came, and I didn't even realize It was chapter's day, until I saw the notification on my smartphone and read it all in 10 seconds (have I mentioned I'm diagnosed with anxiety? No? Okay, yeah).
Now I'm trying to analyze a little bit of this week's chapter with you all while trying to stay sane till the next one, may Endo help us! So, I got a few hypotheses right! Actually, I believe only one 🤣
No revelations yet!
Which is something I'm really grateful for, even though we can not be sure if it will happen in the next chapters, I truly believe it won't. I feel like it's not the moment, the manga is at its peak (so is the anime) gaining a huge amount of notoriety and I don't Believe Endo would rush things, not right now. So I'm glad, I really feel revelations will make the story take a huge turn that we are not quite ready for it. There's so much to happen yet! What is the Garden? Which side is the organization it? What about Westalis? We know nothing. Spy x Family is a huge slow burn, and I'm all in for it.
Tumblr media
CAN SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE? OH, WAIT, NO, NEVERMI-
Twillight is the one hurt, I'm surprised, truly. Yuri is quite a soldier, however, the hesitation present there was bigger than Twilight's ability, reflex and advantage (since he was the one pointing the gun first). My heart truly hurts for seeing him injured, I can't even explain. We've grown fond of our Spy, and It's not a nice feeling. At all
I know, I know he will be fine, he can't die or anything (haha, can he?😨) But still, it is making my heart hurts. In need for those "Yor takes care of Loid's wounds" fanfictions, please? Moving on.
See? Our Twilight is a smart guy. He senses his wavering. He knows it is there, but he doesn't understand why. He can't figure that by hurting (or killing) Yuri, he would deeply hurt Yor, and he would not do that. His unconscious is pretty clearly messing up with his conscious mind and decision-making. I doubt he will bring that up to the Handler, but it's possible, since they know each other very well. My guess is that Sylvia will just know. He won't even say a word and she will know.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Yuri boy, I would totally be creeped out as well. His ability is outstanding and scary, even.
Tumblr media
See? This guy had this major hypothesis (which is right?) figured in like, 5 seconds? He is so bright, Yor is proud as floof as she should. Yes, Yuri, he is someone close to you, someone observing you.
"But that doesn't matter now!" It will surely matter once you find out, but my guess is that he will keep that insight for himself, trying to figure it out on his own, but who knows? It will certainly be on his head, constantly.
Tumblr media
Yuri's hair, I'm like 🤣 Our poor boy. Yes, Yuri, Twilight is tough, but so are you! What am I even saying? I don't have a side in this (kinda do). I want both of them not to be involved, never again fighting, for my heart's sake. They are both precious babies I want to keep them protected, but It's not up to us, right, Endo? Humpf...
Tumblr media
Oh, well. GOOD THING he will live, Twilight, thank you for your unintentional totally intentional mercy.
Tumblr media
I'm
Tumblr media
Not okay. Look at his expression. I'm dying. I'm out of breath. Why is Endo like this? I mean, we are in a serious as floof situation, with conflict going on and you drew what? An expression like that which made me burst out laughing at 3 a.m? Dude.
Tumblr media
He is a tough boy, I must admit.
Tumblr media
Those expressions are killing me. And the worse, I don't know which one is which. That kick must have decreased the chances of a large family lineage for one of them, for sure 🍒 If you know what I mean.
Tumblr media
Yuri on his fight mode is scary (not as much, but it is), just like his sister. I believe one of Endo's objectives is to make us scared of the Briar's brothers and damn, boy, yeah. I don't like that "I will kill everything on my way" expression.
Tumblr media
This was such on point. I loved it, I mean, his floofing daughter is being raised by Yor, so I would consider it a huge plus. Besides, he is thinking of her consciously right now. It's not his unconscious, unknown feelings and thoughts. He is rationalizing and that's major.
Tumblr media
Yeah, that resilience is not even NORMAL anymore. Mama Yor, can you pick me up? I'm scared 😨
Tumblr media
Oh, well, okay, that's expected. Poor Yuri is going to be so hurt after this. I'm wondering if Yor will know about his or Twilight's injuries, she is not as bright as his brother, but she can think about it later, can't she? I wonder If Yuri will visit her while recovering. The tension in the air if Loid is also on this meeting. Damn. This was so much better than a revelation or a simply hurt Twilight. This growing tension makes things so much better (and torturing).
Tumblr media
He is such a good brother.
Tumblr media
And this expression right here is a Twilight on Twilight Conflicted Mode. Yeah, I just made that up, but he is clearly conflicted, may be in pain and not getting understanding a single thought coming from his mind. Only focused on getting out of there, leaving that behind.
Tumblr media
Okay, from this part on I understood ✨ nothing ✨
My reasoning is not that nice and I should be sleeping right now, but I can't due to anxiety, so bear with me, please.
Tumblr media
Yes, it did! WISE is the best, haha, wha-
Tumblr media
Okay, she is also incredible smart, yada yada, I don't want to write about Fiona. Let's move on!
Tumblr media
Damn, folks. Theories? My brain is jello. I can't even function due to the last of sleep, but here I am. Make sure to talk to me in the comments, I really appreciate it. Sorry for any misspelling or typos. Be sure to leave a beautiful kudo and talk to me about what you think will happen next!
I'm certainly less nervous about it, our last chapter was very open to where this one would go, and I'm glad of two things, mainly
No time skip! It started right where it was left.
Our boys are fine! Yuri will be fine. Thank you, Endo!
I miss our girls so much, and Bond boy! 😭

Some things in Chapter 53 of Mo Dao Zu Shi (ExR translation) that caught my eye:
Wei WuXian watched one of the Wen Sect’s disciples pant as he set an arrow onto his bow. Struggling to draw the bow, he just couldn’t pull it all the way back. Finally unable to tolerate it, Wei WuXian grabbed the bow and kicked the disciple to the side.
Not Wei Wuxian being unable to bear this disciple’s incompetence in the middle of this high stress situation lol.
All of the other disciples were setting up their arrows, handling the beast with all of their attention. Nobody was near these two. There were no more arrows on Wei WuXian and there wasn’t enough time to grab someone else’s. Under the urgency of these circumstances, he rushed over, one hand striking away the arm that Wang LingJiao grabbed MianMian’s hair with and the other landing forcefully at her chest.
It baffles me that people still harp on Wei Wuxian’s reckless behavior as if the novel doesn’t consistently outline the reasoning for his choices and exactly how little options he had available to him. Like, clearly Wei Wuxian is thinking these things through. His situational awareness is incredible.
Wei WuXian plugged his ears, “Hey, stop crying, alright? I’m the one who was burned, not you. Don’t tell me that you want me to cheer you up? How about you cheer me up? Okay, enough, Jiang Cheng, stop carrying me. It’s not like my leg is broken.”
Is this a jab at Lan Wangji? Apparently Wei Wuxian has not gotten over Lan Wangji refusing to let him help.
That or he’s subtly scolding Jiang Cheng for disregarding Lan Wangji’s injury in the last chapter. Could be both.
Lan WangJi, “There are leaves within the pool.”
Although the sentence sounded rather strange, Wei WuXian understood at once.
I like how Lan Wangji was able to pick up on this tiny detail Wei Wuxian missed and when he points it out Wei Wuxian immediately understands what he means. Wangxian are meant to be equals and it shows in moments like these.
Jiang Cheng still had three disciples who couldn’t swim beside him. This could be considered the last batch. He knew that they weren’t able to wait and had to dive into the water without Wei WuXian.
You know, Jiang Cheng has actually been really competent in handling the situation and organizing the disciples to leave. That being said he really does just make the decision to abandon Wei Wuxian here.
And then this is contrasted right after with Lan Wangji staying behind to help Wei Wuxian.
Lan WangJi had pushed him [Wei Wuxian] out of the way.
With this opportunity, the jaws of the beast had closed, biting down on his leg.
Wei WuXian’s right leg hurt from simply watching the scene. Lan WangJi’s face was still expressionless. He had only frowned slightly.
It’s official: Lan Wangji is not in fact human. Good to know, good to know.

Chapter 1085 — The death of Nefertari Cobra
And we are back!
Cover story is adorable, although Oda’s sketchy style renders it almost unreadable. Franky is but a mess of lines, especially around his legs and it's difficult to see if its sweat, snot or tears streaming down and around his face.
Please, Oda, please let someone else do the inking.

Yes, yes, nice reminder that king Cobra is very ill indeed, so although his death is tragic, he's still an old, sick man.
But I like the way the Five Elders have –both metaphorically and physically– moved out of the way, so Cobra can get his answers.
Tumblr media
If it's Donquixote, I will throw something. Yes, no idea to introduce new characters/major Celestial families this late in the series, but still. It'd only be a nail in the "family is destiny"-coffin.

a) I really enjoy the perspective on this panel, literally placing Imu at the top of the world
b) The lady doth protest too much, methinks

So either Lili either did something that resulted in the Kozuki clan to make the Ponegplyhs, or she didn't do something that enabled them to release the Poneglyphs onto the world. So she either actively gave them information or was lack in hindering them from obtaining it.
Iiiinteresting. Especially…
Tumblr media
Since there's a D involved.
Does this mean that Vivi is actually Nefertari D. Vivi and has had the same "Let's not talk about our secret names"-thing going on as Law?
Tumblr media
I really like the layout here (although the art, Oda, the art…): Cobra is shaded, already standing in the shadow of the gate of death, while the Five Elders are reduced to their instrumental purpose as Imu's executioners. Great layouting!
Tumblr media
And more great layouting! Imu’s powers are terrifying, aren’t they?
So, Imu's power can't be Darkness, since that's Blackbeards. Shadows is still Moria… Is it Void? A lot of ways to say "hello darkness, my old friend" in this happy-go-lucky pirate manga…
And speaking of…
Tumblr media
…no matter in how light colours you dress, you'll always be black-hearted assassins for me <3
I am begging you Oda! Let. Someone. Else. Do. The. Line. Art.
As I've said previously, the background's crisp lines can save a lot, as we see in Vivi (she is kind of blurry and sketchy while the ropes, chair and Pangea castle in the backgrund are fine), but when we zoom in on her face the hasty work becomes painfully obvious.
Jabra's coat shadows get lost in the folds and if I didn't know it to be Blueno, Kumadori and Fukurou, I couldn' tell. And Kalifa, my girl… her elegant lines and disparaging looks from Water Seven / Enies Lobby have been transformed into some sort of befuddled school teacher. No, it doesn't help that you try to put her in her characteristic pose. It's much less efficient when you can't tell what her expression is due to sloppy line work.
Tumblr media
a) I always forget how completely massive Wapol is, but here he is put into nice perspective thanks to Jabra and Vivi
b) How are you elite agents if you let your hostage get kidnapped in front of you?
c) The sub-plot of Kinderella accepting the mistress but getting shocked at a life on the run is priceless.
Great information exchange! More lore dump! I am well fed and will rest peacefully.
Interesting tidings, although I am sad for Cobra; he was a good guy.
I give the chapter the will of a D and cunning of a fox.
