Another body will do (Ghost x Soap)

Soap develops some unhealthy means of coping with Ghost's disappearance.

Later that day, Price caught up with him and sat him down for a chat. He wore the usual Price scowl and serious expression.  

“We need you back,” he stated firmly. This wasn’t a suggestion. “And we need you to have a clear head.”

Soap knew he would inevitably have to go back to actually doing his job rather than sulking around the base. They’d been trying to follow up on a few leads of distant contacts or keeping their eyes out for new facilities popping up through the grapevine. Gaz would occasionally fill him in on any new updates but it had been fairly silent for weeks.

Rudy and Alejandro had left for a week to return to Mexico where they reached out to allied contacts about any information on large smuggling operations coming through the country.

Still it was a kick in the ass. One Soap probably needed.

“Do you understand?” Price asked.

Soap helped others. He always did his job and he was damn good at it. He never wanted to let anyone down or become a burden to the team. He could focus on what he needed to do – he’d learned to compartmentalize a long time ago. It was a matter of survival.

And right now, his mental survival insisted he get back into it.

“I understand,” Soap responded.

“This is the conversation to tell me you need more time,” Price said, testing Soap’s resolve. “It’s all or nothing. Can I put you back out on the field?”

“I’m good,” Soap said, unwavering.

Price looked him up and down for a second before gruffly nodding once, ending their conversation.

Just like that, Soap was cleared to start going on missions again.

He felt somewhat relieved to get back into familiar patterns. Packing his bags, cleaning his guns, sharpening his knives, tightening his helmet and vest. The first debrief that he sat in on, he was welcomed with a warm smile and pat to his back from Gaz as he settled into the seat next to him. Even the monotony of the long trips were comforting in a sense.

Still, he felt the distinct lack of Ghost by his side and watching his back.

It started off slow – a few recons, information retrieval, tails. Each one a success.

Although it felt good to have a bit of structure back in his life, Soap couldn’t help but let his eyes wander. The clarity he felt in his mind while on a mission would quickly come crashing down upon him as soon as they were finished.

The pain of longing and desire flooded back to him, making him drown in his sorrows again. It was even the simplest things that triggered it. The empty space next to him in the mess hall. Having too much leg room in the plane or in the car without Ghost’s knees bumping into his. The way no one would berate Gaz when he told a bad joke. When Soap put his gear away and he had to unclasp everything himself.

He missed Ghost so much.

He needed Ghost.

He needed Ghost so much that he started to crave touch from, well, anyone. Soap felt like an empty shell. He was empty. The only time he felt a rush of something was when he was lying underneath someone. So that’s what he started seeking it out.
