hi there!

I always see you commenting on OP chapters and analyzing them, which makes it a great joy for me to read some without the typical op fans hate.

Anyhow, I would like to ask for your thoughts on Law's current situation and his rule in the future #spoilers

I personally don't think his rule is over yet, Oda went out of his way to declare Law's new goal, which many ppl said after dressrosa he is irrelevant?

besides, Law isn't a rival to Luffy, if anything he's an ally, so there is no point in tossing him out of the story like he did with Kidd - which is a shame and lazy writing honestly - But I don't like to use '' he's a D too'' argument either, because:

a) Ace, b) not every D is essential to the plot.

I can't predict what Oda gonna do with him in the future, maybe join Luffy again ( the fan in me talking) or join Crocodile and the others (stampede foreshadowing ?)cuz law doesn't seem to care who he works with as long as his goals are accomplished.

I just feel like Oda wanted so bad to get rid of his crew and focus on him - and bepo cuz he's cute- it seems like a pattern that Oda is doing every time Law is on screen.

P.S. I'm sick of people saying law gonna die, like, what's the point of him dying, they've been on it for years lol.

Thank you! Wow—that's quite an ask! (I don't mind). My answer will probably not be that long (haha) and obviously I'm not Oda, so everything is speculation. I'm not answering in any particularly order, but

I don't think Kid has been cast aside. He might not be a contender for the One Piece any more, but Oda put a lot of work into his character too, making it one of the main subplots of Wano, and a lot of work into his design, and Kid and Law appeared on two of the volume covers for the Wano arc, so I think he's temporarily disposed, but I think we'll see him again (plus he named all of Kid's crew?). Killer as well, having appeared on that colour spread with the first hand men of major players (Shiryu is there as well; but I do think that King and Katakuri might not be playing roles).

2. I think the D. should be focused on, actually. All of the Ds, in that, perhaps the Poneglyphs the Hearts carried did survive in their own possession (wishful thinking!), and the crew themselves. I've written elsewhere that I think that Oda gave them a marine animal theme, and named them after marine animals (some of which can dive very deep) for a purpose (I call them National Geographic Hearts). However, this is more a head canon for my creative purposes, and I do cede that Oda separates Law from his crew on the regular, cos' 20 characters plus 10 characters + 1 is far too many for a storyline to maintain cohesion, and it's Luffy's story.

3. Okay, this is a spoiler for my fanfiction, Bioluminescent Hearts: BUT, what if through marine animal shapeshifting devices, ALL Hearts & Law & Bepo end up on Elbaf, which, according to Artur at Library of Ohara, is not too far from Winner Island (I'll put a visual below). The poneglyphs survive, somehow (actually, might have them wrapped in seal skin. Might edit that into my story!) ie: one of the crew always kept them on their body, nearby, etc.

Saul (a D.) recognises Law because he follows the news and Robin's life, and takes in both the Hearts and "returns" the poneglyphs to Law. (Also, probably knew a young Rosinante). From there???

4. I doubt Oda is gonna take that path. But that's my alternative path. Law will probably hook up with Luffy and I don't mind Kid doing that either. I don't

want Law to do it as an extra Straw Hat though, or as a (relation)ship or as a subordinate to Luffy. Robin and Law will still be able to pursue their wish to seek out true history through their interest in the Void Century, Will of D. etc., and Saul will help fill in the blanks if this path is taken.

I believe the Kid and Heart crews will still play a support role to Luffy, but it will be sketched into the background. I believe that Killer will also have a role (like Bepo). Possibly the next best-known Hearts and Kid pirates might appear. Again, I don't think it will be that detailed.

5. What I started to say above but didn't, is that I think that all Ds are essential to the plot, especially now that we've discovered that Saul is alive, and Ace's death obviously drives the story, as do Law's parents' death, but Law isn't going to die because he's a D or pursuit of knowledge about being a D, etc., or for any other reason imo.

I don't think that Oda would want anything to overshadow Luffy's story at this point of the narrative, and killing Law off would do that. The angst train is strong, though, anon! So let people have their hand-wringing. It can be fun.

Also, I totally understand the deeper tragedy of losing a home/house (and in Japanese, Law refers to his crew as うち uchi , which is a word for home, when they meet the Straw hats on Zou), BUT I feel that Oda will not kill off the Hearts, and even if they're captured, I don't think the focus will strongly be on them (time constraints).

But, it will be cool if the hook up with Koby again in Hachinosu, etc. (there is that sub-story too!), considering the role they must've played in the Rocky Port Incident. Law too.

The Polar Tang was destroyed. And I love her. And I loved the Victoria Punk too, but through writing about the Polar Tang, probably had a deeper attachment to the submarine. However, the Hearts and the Kid Pirates are pirates, and part of the game is plunder, attack, destruction. Law got lucky (or had the skill and resources) with destroying the factories at Punk Hazard (and destroying the island and navy resources), and unlucky this time. He didn't invite the attack, and was up against an emperor and his crew, but Smoker, Caesar, etc. didn't invite the attacks (whether justified or not) on their person, peoples and possessions either. I'm not saying the attacks carry equal moral weight (which, Oda does a very good job of asking us to question), but pointing out the world they all inhabit.

One of Law's hobbies is apparently wandering, and he was the wandering monk in Wano (komusō). I think part of this might be cos he has been seeking a purpose, and that it's also tied to a fear of putting roots down, because they continually get usurped, but maybe it's also just part of his nature.

I think that he's learnt by now just how resilient he is and that he can come back and also that he won't betray the faith—and recognises the love—that love has had in him (I'm in the minority there, but I think the novel supports me, and various statements Law makes elsehwere).

Anyway, did I answer anything? Probably not. And absolutely NO shade on the interpretations anyone else has, and I find if I get frustrated with fandom takes I usually just stay clear of that platform, that tag, that topic for a while! Law lives, don't worry. If he dies, I'm wrong, and I'll eat Law's hat once I wrest it from Blackbeard' grip. However, I do also cede the symbolism of him losing his hat. 3rd time is the charm/death knell?

PS: I don't really want him to join up with Croco and the boys, but Oda has a way of endearing me to any premise he's come up with, so basically, I'll wait and see what unfolds. Too, great metas on this topic over at @purplehairedwonder — for chapter 1081, but I also really liked their meta on chapter 1079. @ninhaoma-ya's chapter analyses are great too, and I enjoy @roydeezed 's write-ups. I don't read anything as closely as these guys do!

Chapter 1081: Heartbroken

Me, reading this chapter:

Okay, let’s start with the stuff on Hachinosu:

Garp and his ship land in the wake of the giant explosion at the end of last chapter. He’s worried he’s losing his touch while everyone else looks on in horror at the thought that this is what losing a step looks like. (Just saying, Akainu should be sending Sengoku flowers and chocolates for saving his life at Marineford when he stopped Garp from attacking.)

Moreover, thankfully we don’t have to wait for Garp and Coby to reunite.

But there is a complication: turns out Kuzan is actually on Hachinosu after all (which leaves Lafitte and Catarina Devon to potentially be on the ship heading to Egghead). I am genuinely surprised by this; I felt fairly certain Kuzan would be at Egghead with all the Ohara references. But now I’m wondering if Kuzan will cross paths with the Straw Hats at Elbaf... which is also where Saul is. That would be something.

(Also, I still want to know where Smoker is.)

Kuzan announces his presence by freezing Hibari. 

So, this could be a coincidence, but there’s also a potential for something more dramatic here. There are theories floating around that Hibari is Akainu’s daughter, so Kuzan freezing her here could be a sort of revenge against the man who cost him the position of Fleet Admiral and his leg.

We also get a flashback to Kuzan joining the Blackbeard Pirates:

NGL, it’s pretty sus that Kuzan and Blackbeard just happened to end up at the same place. I don’t feel like this stops the speculation that Kuzan is undercover, especially considering some of the things he says:

Back at Ohara, he says

Later, when he saves Smoker from Doflamingo on Punk Hazard, he tells Smoker

(Side note, this is very much like what Law tells Smoker about why he became a Warlord--seeing things at a different angle.)

Kuzan, despite being with Blackbeard at this point, is calling himself independent. And he says,

Which brings us to what he says on Hachinosu:

He’s acting according to his own wishes, not the World Government’s and not Blackbeard’s. After all, consider what Blackbeard says when he recruits Kuzan:

Kuzan clearly has his own agenda here--one he’s had in mind and has been inspired by for a long time, only now he feels free to act on it--and if he has to fight Garp to keep up his place in their midst until his goals are achieved, he will do so. 

(I just want to take a moment to note that we have yet another contrast between Blackbeard and Luffy; Luffy’s crew is full of his friends who fight for one another and want to help each other achieve their dreams. Blackbeard’s crew is entirely transactional.)

The way he phrases the need to make sure Coby isn’t rescued is also telling:

The optics would be bad for his mission if Coby got out in his watch, and that’s the only concern. He’s not a true believer here; he’s doing what is necessary for whatever his mission is.

So, Kuzan is an immovable object and Garp is an unstoppable force. They collide.

AND NOW TO THE PART OF THE CHAPTER THAT WILL BE LIVING RENT FREE IN MY BRAIN FOR THE REST OF FOREVER.

Oh no.

WELL, THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY.

This panel... hit me like a physical blow. Law’s been on the Tang since he was 16. I’m emotional about it.

Law whumps so pretty, sorry not sorry. (Add this to the file with him on the Heart Throne in Dressrosa and being tortured in Wano.) Bepo is... really adorable? And I love that the two of them are together here? Bepo’s with his captain, and I cry. This was also a brutal fight since it was Blackbeard and three Titanic commanders vs. the Hearts.

And another Rocky Port mention:

So, this confirms that Law got his hundred hearts at Rocky Port, and they’re all still on Hachinosu.

Meanwhile, Bepo (in another adorable panel) eats a new rumble ball from Chopper. (Can we talk about Chopper making this for Bepo? Chopper, bb, I love you so much.)

Law, stop being so pretty while you’re bloodied up.

Blackbeard knows about the Perennial Youth Operation, which is not surprising since he’s been hunting down Devil Fruits and Law’s is known as the Ultimate Devil Fruit. It’s interesting, too, that when Blackbeard ambushes Law, he says it’s for Law’s poneglyphs, but when Law is defeated, he talks about his Devil Fruit instead.

(Speaking of Law’s poneglyphs, did Blackbeard get them? With the Tang sinking and the captain and navigator escaping... wouldn’t it be ironic if he ambushed Law for his poneglyphs only to forget to take them in his victory.)

AND CHOPPER’S GIFT LETS BEPO GO SULONG WITHOUT THE FULL MOON. HYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYPE.

This bear, who is constantly apologizing for silly things, TAKES ON BLACKBEARD AND HIS TITANIC CAPTAINS to protect Law. I love their friendship so much.

Bepo takes Law and escapes in the sea. (Fun fact, polar bears can swim about 6 mph/10 kmh, and the longest known distance a polar bear has swum is 220 miles/354 km. So, Bepo is capable of getting Law to safety.)

Also, Law is leaving his hat and Kikoku behind -- two of his most visible signifiers. This... this hurts.

I am genuinely heartbroken by this moment. We know how much Law cares for his crew; he sent them to Zou to protect them from Doflamingo, and he gave himself up to be tortured in Wano to rescue Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin. He takes his role protecting his people very seriously, so he begs Bepo to turn around even though he’s in no shape to do anything. He just won’t abandon them (reminds me of him refusing to abandon Luffy if he were to die in Dressrosa).

But Bepo tells Law to trust in the Hearts. They’re tough and they’re survivors. This makes me think the Hearts will survive and regroup offscreen while Law and Bepo get away. (I can’t help but think, though, about the Hearts scattered on Winner Island and in the water and how Blackbeard is involved in the slave trade. Could you imagine the rage if Blackbeard sold the Hearts into slavery and Law had to rescue them? Or, if Blackbeard brings the survivors back as prisoners and lets the pirates with missing hearts at them... Yikes.)

Despite being conscious, Law must be in really bad shape for Bepo to be worried about him dying here. (I get that going underwater is safer against threats like Van Augur here, but Law is a badly-wounded Devil Fruit eater... he’s not going to be able to stay under very long, Bepo, heh.)

I want to examine, for a second, the way the defeat of the Hearts is framed versus the defeat of the Kid Pirates (versus the defeat of the Straw Hats in Sabaody).

“Winner Island, New World. On this day, the Heart Pirates, led by Trafalgar Law, were soundly defeated.”

“On this day, in the New World by Elbaf, the Kid Pirate crew, led by Eustass ‘Captain’ Kid, a man worth 3 billion, was completely eradicated.”

“Grove 12, Sabaody Archipelago, the Grand Line. That day, the Straw Hat Pirates, led by Captain Monkey D. Luffy, were eradicated.”

It’s quite noticeable how much more dramatically both the Kid Pirates’ and the Straw Hats’ defeats were described. For one thing, the descriptions of the Kid Pirates’ and Straw Hats’ defeats are more flowery. 

Plus, the use of the word “eradicated,” which sounds permanent. Obviously, the Straw Hats weren’t permanently broken up, but they are separated for two years. It’s a dramatic defeat. We don’t know what happened to the Kid Pirates, but it didn’t look good, as both Kid and Killer, who can’t swim, were thrown into the water. On the other hand, the Hearts are described as being “defeated” while Law and Bepo escape.

So, what comes next? On the one hand, it would make a lot of sense for Bepo to get Law to safety and then call the Straw Hats. This could be a great excuse to get Law back onto the Sunny for the duration, especially since his goal to learn about the Will of D. is aligned with Luffy’s without competing with his. Plus, you know Luffy wouldn’t hesitate to help Law.

On the other hand, if we think about where Law is in conjunction to the other two captains...

He’s closer to Elbaf than Egghead. It would not shock me if we start to see all these plotlines (Straw Hats, Kuzan, Law) converge on Elbaf.

Ugh, this chapter has completely wrecked me.

A Glitch in the Programming (Human Ultron x Reader) Part 2

A/N: I decided to post chapter 2 today since neither of these two chapters have anything super exciting happening just yet. Chapters 3 and 4 are both already finished, and will have a lot more going on! Please bear with me until them. I’ll have them posted this weekend!

Ultron.

You blinked, taken aback by your coworker’s words. “Ultron?”

“They’ve been after him since Sokovia, obviously. You have to admit, the guy’s pretty damn smart. He went into hiding almost immediately following Sokovia, and started building a new body. You know Vision, right?” said Lee, stepping closer to you to voice his excitement over the whole ordeal.

“Of course I know Vision.”

“Ultron built another one… but this time, he succeeded. As soon as his plan in Sokovia failed, he built himself a new body… a human body, so that he could blend in and not be found as easily. Being an 8-foot robot kind of makes you stand out and all.”

“Right,” you answered slowly, “So how did they find him?”

“Beats me. I’m sure it’s bound to cross one of our desks here in a few days to be filed away, right? Hey, Joanne, if you get the Ultron paperwork, you’d tell us right?”

Joanne once again peered around the corner, “Duh. If it gets to my desk, you won’t hear me stop bragging about it!”

You chuckled a bit and leaned back in your seat, letting the reality sink in for a moment. “I can’t believe they caught him… but… why did they bring him here? Why not kill him?”

“There must be some kind of good reason, right? They’re not going to underestimate him this time… he’s in one of the most secure facilities in the country. Cameras, 24/7 security, Avengers at every turn… besides, he’s human now anyway. He makes any wrong move, it’s over. Maybe they just want to get some kind of information out of him,” Lee answers.

“I don’t like this,” Joanne added, “It feels like they’re playing with fire. I don’t want to be in the same building as the guy who promotes mass-extinction events.”

“You three have some work to keep you busy, right?” another voice drew your attention away from the ongoing conversation. 

From the other side of the desk, a smaller man approached, sunglasses shading his eyes, but he didn’t need a name tag for you to be able to recognize him. Glowing blue device on the chest… signature beard… this was Tony Stark.

“Mr. Stark!” Lee choked, and immediately cleared his throat, “I mean, yes sir. We were just discussing… the Ultron situation.”

“What situation? There’s no ‘situation’. Ultron’s an Avengers problem and we brought him back here to deal with him,” Stark said, and paused when he met your eye. “Do me a favor. Tell me where they took him?”

“Surveillance room five…”

“Awesome. Where’s that?”

You blinked at him. He didn’t know? You quietly rose from your seat and stepped out from behind the desk, lifting a hand to begin your explanation of direction when he clasped a hand over your shoulder and discreetly leaned in. “I know where it is. Just walk with me?”

You tried not to lose your cool over the fact that you were talking to an Avenger, and instead nodded and began to walk the route the security team had taken Ultron just a few minutes prior. 

“I heard you all speculating on why we brought Ultron back here,” Tony said after a moment, “And I have to emphasize the importance of the confidentiality agreement you signed when you started working here. This information can’t leave this building, okay?”

“Um, okay. I mean, yes sir.”

“We had orders to kill him on sight, but… Truth is, I wanted to see if there was a fix to whatever bug caused him to go crazy in Sokovia,” He stopped as soon as the two of you hard turned the corner, out of sight of your coworkers. “You’ve worked with us for… how long, now?” “... Four years, sir.”

He repeated your response to himself before reaching into his coat pocket and retrieving a thin file folder. “Then I want you to be in charge of filing this.” 

You took the folder from his hand and opened it--the front paper featured a grainy image of robotic Ultron side-by-side with an image of human Ultron. Across both images, “TOP SECRET” was stamped in large red letters. You blinked at it, then looked back at Tony Stark. 

“I’ve already put my signature on them. All you need to do is add today’s date where prompted, and file it away with the other cases. Easy, right? And remember what I said. This is all confidential, alright? Don’t discuss it with your coworkers any more than that.” He put a finger to his lips to emphasize his point, and you could only nod in response. Then, he turned on his heel and continued on his way to surveillance room five.

You, on the other hand, made your way back to your desk. As you returned to your seat, Lee once again leaned over to you. You hid Ultron’s file inside the opening of your jacket.

“What was that about?” Lee inquired, eyes wide.

“He just needed directions to room five.”

“Did he say anything else?”

“Just that we need to keep the Ultron discussion on the downlow. It’s extremely confidential… so drop it before we end up losing our jobs.”

That seemed to shut Lee up. He always was a bit of an Avengers fanboy, and the idea of losing his position at the compound was terrifying enough of a thought. Once he’d gone back to his work, you quietly took the file folder out of your jacket and placed it atop your desk. You pulled a pen from your nearby pencil cup and opened the folder, once again letting your eyes roam the first sheet.

Again, you were greeted with the intense gaze of two very different faces--each Ultron, yet so unlike each other. You flipped to the next page and found a blank spot for the date underneath Tony Stark’s signature. You dated the page and flipped through the next few pages to repeat the process. 

You’d be lying if you said your curiosity hadn’t gotten the better of you. You skimmed over the information written on the sheets, but as far as confidential information goes, you could hardly comprehend anything written on the papers beyond a quick history lesson on why, exactly, Ultron was considered a global threat. 

Curiosity satiated, you closed the folder and wheeled your chair over to the filing cabinet. You placed the folder inside, following the alphabetical order of the rack, and locked the drawer behind you once you’d finished.

My speculation for next chapter is that someone (hopefully a new young genki phos) walks in and phos comes to their senses or the gem that finds them smashes them and tosses them into the ocean leading to the sea arc.

plance wins so easily it’s not even funny. oddly enough considering my current feelings on the pairing Allura/Lance takes second place (though only by very weak implication in one case and...by a very wide margin). and then there are the other mostly implied (Allura/Lotor, Keith/Matt) that occur once each plus an Allura/Keith fic and a gen fic that’s also technically Krolia/Keith’s dad

Pidge is, in a sense, a little easier to write but Lance, depending on the tone i’m going for, can be wild fun because he’s so ridiculous sometimes

uh...i’m capable of having decent titles?? thing is, my titles tend to be on the nose or else something i forget i need till the point i’m posting a fic, but i like Everywhere Cats partly because it was very much inspired by a simple children’s song i remember my sister playing when she first started learning piano. i also like Facing Reality as a title because of the word play i can be clever

...okay i’m going to stop here because i keep looking back and realizing i like more of those than i thought i did

Worst title?

many of them are so...plain that i’m not sure i can pick just one. sure, they tell you what the story is about, but there’s nothing hidden in them...they’re so bland. throw a dart at a board with all my one-word titles and you’ll probably hit something

Best first line?

Worst first line?

i think my first lines in general are...decent?? nothing spectacular, just meant to convey what’s going on and why it’s important (or that’s what i try to do at least), but out of laziness i’m going with the one from Everywhere Cats:

Hunk settled his helmet onto his head as he walked into the Yellow Lion’s hangar, feeling wonderfully light at the prospect of this mission.

Best last line?

Adrift made me so emotional when i was writing it that i have to use this one:

“Love,” [Krolia] said, “can you turn off the lights? I’m showing Keith the stars.”

Worst last line?

i tend to end my fics rather abruptly (i really really hate unnecessary bits tacked on when everything is pretty much resolved) and/or on dialogue and i’m usually thoughtful of how i end it so i’m not even gonna skim through the rest of my fics because this one from Assassins is just so boring:

She followed General Sahr inside, and this time both Coran and Lotor came with her.

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

yes, yes i did. also looking back at last year’s list i didn’t even get any of the goals i set accomplished...whoops??

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

uh...Keith/Matt i guess?? maybe Allura/Lance too because i really don’t like that pairing now (though i used to be indifferent or else somewhat like it) so it’s like a retrospective “well i can’t believe i managed to write them as a romantic pairing”

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

always will i answer this question with scaled to size because it actually does make me happy, especially thinking of all the pain and suffering i’m only somewhat exaggerating i went through while conceiving of it thanks to a computer mishap (and, tbh, my own neglect), and ultimately all it took to revive it was a timely prompt from the Pidgance Positivity Discord and dare i say it ended up far better than planned??

uh well i’ve never posted anything more explicit than simple foreplay so i suppose that would be Final Lifeline but i also want to make note of like a masochistic moth to dragonflame because i think i did well with a touch of Unresolved Sexual Tension and Bad Press was almost candid about that sort of thing and Lance almost propositioned Pidge by accident

Saddest story?

it’s probably a toss-up between  Final Lifeline (major character death on top of a possible awful future), Misfortune (predicted character death), and a small step (they can’t really be together)

Most fun?

Bad Press was a riot while i was working on it. Everywhere Cats was a lot of fun too, as was scaled to size (though tbh i have fun writing a vast majority of my fics...)

Story with single sweetest moment?

nothing really stands out to me at the moment so this is mostly a cop-out (and Pidge and Lance are at their best when they’re teasing each other anyway) from scaled to size:

“Is there…any room for the brave and dashing knight that rescued you in that future?” Lance whispered.

“Maybe, if you find him.”

“Hey!” Lance exclaimed, pulling away from him slightly.

Pidge snickered and wrapped her arms around his neck. “But there’s room for the brave boy that grew into his too-big britches.”

“Yes, but I’m a knight now too,” Lance pointed out.

“Should I call you Sir Lance now?” Pidge raised an eyebrow while one of her hands wandered into his hair and pulled his head down. “But I think I like Lance better…”

Their noses brushed, and Pidge’s warm breath caressed his face.

Lance’s eyes slid shut when he kissed her.

Hardest story to write?

most likely Displaced because i’m not really into Keith/Matt as a romantic pairing (and it ended up more gen anyway) and i wasn’t really enamored by the idea so i was mostly just trying to wrap up what i had without getting into the concept too much

Easiest/most fun story to write?

the night i bolted out of bed possessed by a spark of inspiration thanks to this art to hammer out Masquerade will forever live in infamy

for another, i published a fic in a zine!! also i participated in a Bang and a gift exchange, neither of which i’d done before

also posting the start of a multichapter fic not yet finished is a risk that hasn’t quite payed off yet *sweats*

no idea. i’m decidedly not a very goal-oriented person, but for now i think i’ll keep it simple and finish my four dubiously active WIPs, write something amazing for the Plance Mini Bang (which i’m also mod-ing oh boy), and outline as often as possible to ease the writing

MARCOS ERA: DARKEST CHAPTER OR BEST YEARS OF THE PHILIPPINES?

The darkest chapter of Philippine history–this is how Marcos regime is often described. Some, who commend the discipline and the flourish of the country, say it is the “best years” of the Philippines. Martial law up until today still is one of the most debatable topics in the country. The Philippines under the dominance of military government brought sense of safety to people yet, scars to some.

The entire nation was put under the direct military control as the late president, Ferdinand Marcos, signed the Proclamation 1081 to subdue the recalcitrant communists who were provoking duress and intimidation to the nation’s peaceful society. The declaration was speculated to be the ultimate solution to the growing problems in lawlessness and criminality. Armed forces were ordered to suppress any form or act of insurrection and rebellion, thus everybody was expected to conform to the implemented law as punishment will follow if any rules are to be broken. To some, the declaration was a necessity while others think it was a maneuver plotted by Marcos in order to gain absolute rule of the country.

The Philippines under Marcos regime was prosperous indeed. Responsive and immense in size infrastructures were established as well as great discipline was instilled in our fellow countrymen. Marcos was certainly an erudite and far sighted leader with several definite plans and projects for the country. He has the aim to improve the nation’s state of living and knows how to achieve it. The Philippines was once a self-sufficient country in terms of rice production and was a major exporter of rice and marine species, a country where no one is excused of the law and justice is properly served, and abundance of entrepreneurial and housing projects were offered to poverty-stricken families. The Philippines was one affluent and flourishing country before compared to other countries in Southeast Asia. Marcos undoubtedly contributed to the economic growth of the Philippines.

Aside from the economical bloom of the country, one significant aftereffect of declaring Martial Law is the discipline inculcated in the people due to the strict governance under the military control. Curfew was enforced and everybody was expected to be in their respective houses before the clock strike at 12 midnight. Curfews were observed and imposed throughout the Philippines to diminish the number of crimes, destruction of lives and property and widespread lawlessness and anarchy. Streets were completely empty by midnight and whoever loiters around during curfew hours will be summarily arrested.

However, such authoritarian governance drove people to despise the Marcos regime. People were deprived of the right to voice out their respective opinions and countless cases human rights violations were rampant. Marcos controlled the media which resulted in absence of press freedom. The whole nation was silenced, for whoever will speak against the government will be chastised or executed. Majority of the people lived in terror because of the tyranny and oppression. The suspended civil rights and imposed military authority sowed fear to everyone. People suffered from the death of democracy during the Martial Law. Also, what made the Marcos regime one of the darkest times of Philippine history was the multitudinous amount of innocent lives taken away mercilessly. Ten thousands of people were murdered, salvaged and tortured ruthlessly because of the abuse of the authority. Up until today, the horror of the Martial Law still remains in the minds of the people.

Martial Law will always remain as a controversial issue in the Philippine history. Some will defend the Martial Law as the best thing that ever happened in the country while some will continue to detest and put the blame on the dictator for the declaration of the Martial Law that brought fear and terror to the entire nation.
