When Toshinori starts having visions in Ch.401, he sees Nana and Nighteye, not Izuku. While Kamino was about what Toshinori had to live for in the future, this battle is about making peace with his past. Nana and Nighteye were obviously close to him, but more than that Toshinori feels like he wronged them and needs to atone. Both of them were fatally injured when he was NOT there. Both of them cared deeply about him, and he struggled to tell them what they meant to him as a human, not just as fellow heroes. When Toshinori hears Nana and Nighteye encouraging him to get up, and he internalizes their message, he is truly accepting their kindness for the first time. He’s living and surviving because they are there for him, and in doing so he atones for his past mistakes.

In my opinion, the reason the reunion scene was skipped was because the author couldn’t figure out a way to write it non-romantically and gave up after a while

honestly. i kinda agree with you nonnie.

it just. the set up to the scene is sooooo romantic. you have lloyd being absolutely devastated at the thought he's not going to see any of his loved ones ever again and that he's been dropped back into his terrible life, to the place he admitted he'd rather die than go back to,,, and then someone knocks at the door and when he opens it this is the sight that greets him:

his best friend, the person he's closest to, the one he's spent years with, the one he promised a peaceful life at his side, the one he wanted to grow old with, the one he sacrificed everything for, the one he effectively gave his life to save, the one he thought he'd never see again, standing at his door, having crossed literal dimensional barriers to get to him, a soft and teary smile on his face as he tells him "i missed you"

like. c'mon.

i'm all for platonic interpretations, i'm aroace, i love me a good best friendship as much as the next guy, but,,,, isn't this,,, like,,, really fucking romantic??? extremely so??? am i??? reading too much into it?? because it feels really, really romantic to me.

and like you say. where do you go from there. what response could lloyd give that doesn't involve throwing himself at javier and clinging to him with all of his strength. what conversation could these two have that doesn't involve them seeing how truly devoted they are to each other. what resolution does their arc together have that isn't them spending the rest of their lives together, at each other's side, like they so dearly wanted to.

but. alas. that wasn't the story bk moon wanted to tell. and that's very much his right. i just think that if he didn't want me to assume there's no in-character and narratively satisfying version of that conversation that doesn't end with them kissing he should've at least tried to give us something. and not completely skipped it lol

but that's just my opinion too :]

On Toshinori and ?Spirituality?: Exploring Classic Tropes

Ah yes, the classic near death trope of seeing loved ones encouraging you. Long time readers know that Horikoshi loves flipping tropes.

But how tragic is it that, for a moment, Toshinori really believes his master is there with him, cheering him on. And then, just as quickly, he pushes the thought away.

Hallucinations, he thinks. Just me talking to myself.

(So he also may have told a young Aizawa once....)

How doubly tragic then that Mirai is his practical--possibly even negative--voice. You have to stop. You can't do any more.

Toshinori isn't considered a spiritual person, at least not at first. He was surprised at Nana's thoughts on "meeting again some day". With the reveal of the Vestiges and realizing he himself is somehow both in One for All and also a person, he's perhaps become more open to the idea of something beyond. His Vestige saw Bakugo. He just sensed a connection with Deku despite them being miles apart. And let's not forget that OfA is powered by the wishes of people, by people all over the world clasping their hands and praying for his victory.

Yet Toshinori cannot permit himself to dally/wallow in sentimentality. It's somewhat heart-rending to see him shove away comfort that others--or if he so claims, his very self--offer so he can return to his battle calculations and giving every last drop of blood and every remaining gasp of breath to stop AfO.

And defiantly, Toshinori wakes up and literally starts dragging himself along--as he once swore he would. Perhaps there's no time right now in this the most important fight he's ever been in. Even so, it feels sad....

Also, that close up shot of him at the very end is probably one of the most deliciously terrifying panels I've EVER seen of All Might. Like, we're well past Feral Mode now.
