Castiel CHOOSING to let his vessel age alongside Sam and Dean. He first excuses this by convincing himself he's only doing it to not stand out and it's saving his grace. That it's wasteful to constantly keep rejuvenating cells when he could be using that power elsewhere. It simply makes the most sense, especially when he falls from Heaven to help aid Dean Winchester. The years go by and the vessel is no longer just a vessel, it's his body and he likes experiencing the human process of aging. The wrinkles he's getting at the corner of his eyes, the laugh lines on his cheeks from smiling at Dean's antics, the grey hairs starting to dust his hair. He loves experiencing this part of humanity. Sam and Dean don't notice how odd it is Castiel is aging alongside them. They're human, so they don't think anything of someone aging until it's brought to their attention by someone Castiel is an angel-- vessels don't age. Or at least, they shouldn't. Dean thinks something has to be wrong with Cas' grace, that Cas has been hiding he's hurt or something fatal but Cas tells him there's nothing to worry about. He chose it. He could at the snap of his fingers restore the body back to its original state when he first possessed Jimmy Novak but he doesn't want to. Dean asks why doesn't he. I mean, aging isn't exactly glamourous and it's something a lot of humans would want to skip out on. Cas answers by saying, "I wanted to because... because it makes me feel more like I belong", but Dean notices his stutter. Cas' answer is satisfactory, but Dean knows Cas and he knows when Cas is hiding the full truth. Which causes him to think Cas is lying about something important he should know about and he's determined to find out what.
What Cas doesn't want Dean to know is that maybe back in 2009 he started letting his vessel age to conserve grace where he could or so he wouldn't stand out amongst the Winchesters or make himself seem more alien than he already did. But the real reason he let his vessel age (which he's aware of now) is because he wanted grow old alongside the man he loves and this was as close as he could get to the fantasy.

Can i just point out how fucking deranged it was for jackles to say dean's biggest regret was not being able to save cas instead of saying it was dying on that piece of rebar. Cuz jackles fucking HATES the rebar. We know this. He dunks on it every chance he gets. This wouldve been a great opportunity to rag on it disguised as a ha ha funny joke. But instead he. he

we were genuinely so cheated not to have Cas possess Dean. Hell! He could have possessed Sam and it still would have gotten the point across. Jensen would have put his whole jussy into the Cas/Dean hand off, and they could have had a whole convo before or after about how “it’s okay Cas, I trust you. You can have control.” And then references from then on to “when I was in you…” and with Sam? Don’t get me started. Dean being so fucking uncomfortable because Cas looks like his brother. Or the complete opposite where Dean so clearly just sees Cas and keeps having to be like “oh shit” when he gets too close and realizes it’s Sam’s body and it’s weird. So many possibilities and we got none of them 😭

it ever hit you out of nowhere that castiel is living in a dead guy's body and the show just does not care. it does not care. jimmy novak might as well not exist the moment he or claire is out of sight. cas stole a guy's body and his face and his life, and we can't ever talk about it or discuss it in detail because of how fucking horrifying it is that sam and dean's best friend just walks around in a dead guy suit. there's not even a human soul in there anymore. it's just a corpse. stone-cold body snatcher indeed.
#castiel spn#spn#this is not like a Castiel Crime (tm) to be clear. this is more me being (un)surprised that the show is Like This.#castiel is a horror story he is so much a horror story in the rapture#and then they just uh. never bring up again how horrifying and fucked up this is for another like 7 seasons#and when they do its to briefly go :( claire lost her dad :) but its okay! she forgives cas for it!#which!! NO SHE SHOULD FUCKING NOT!!!#but we can't have that discussion. we can't talk about that. because to acknowledge that it's fucked up would mean making cas kind of. evil#in a way that would vastly improve his later character arcs btw. if we had to reckon with not only this massive transgression#but with the fact that cas himself STILL DOESN'T SEE IT AS ONE.#that on a lot of fundamental levels. he is still functioning as he did in s4. a lot of that base programming is still there.#something something how cas never changes out of his suit under his trenchcoat#but it's like. jimmy said yes. so it's fine. that's what it is to him.#anyway. i wish they hadn't been scared of making all three of the boys more fucked up in later seasons.#thank GOD for dean being interesting in how he becomes Worse <3 because they were not bringing that for castiel.#again. good version of spn where jimmy's bloodline is an off-shoot of the lucifer vessel bloodline. explaining a) how lucifer Got In There#and b) letting lucifer possess claire later so that the two of them can have daddy issues together.#something about cas being the monster-not monster that jimmy let in that destroyed his life.#something about lucifer being the monster-not monster that castiel lets in later. the cycles. they are cycling.

In a dire situation, Dean agrees to be Castiel's vessel to smite the threat. There's no hiding the tattered wings and broken halo ever again now, though...

Season 11 is so good but one change I would make.
We shouldn't have been shown that Lucifer possessed Castiel.
We should've found out the exact same time Sam did, in episode fourteen. Can you IMAGINE. Obviously he'd been acting off - some of us might have called it. But that reveal, when he started laughing at Sam? Ugh.

Silence Over Coffee (short destiel drabble)
Cas take a moment to look at Dean Winchester. He’s holding this tenseness about him that he never seems to quite get rid of, a stance of masculinity that he grips with both hands to get through every day. Right now he’s pouring creamer in his coffee, and haphazardly tipping in sugar, not seeming to care if he uses too much. “I love you” Cas thinks, and Dean looks up almost as if he hears. Cas thinks about saying it like he’s thought so many times before, but the moment passes. Dean makes a joke, Cas doesn't get it. He laughs anyway.
Dean makes a joke, Cas laughs, and Dean hopes he can always make Cas laugh, it seemed like he was always the only one who could. He wants to spend his life, gently pulling laughs from Cas, a substitute for all the things he truly wants to say, a substitute for the kind of honesty that would shatter Dean.
Sometimes a part of Cas (maybe the part that's an angel, maybe the part that defied his angelic side) wants to take control of Dean's life. Play God in the most blasphemous way. He would steer Dean away from all that harms him, make sure he is warm and safe and loved, even if that love was facilitated by distance (as God or a father’s love always seems to be). But Cas isn't God, or a father. He is a messy excuse of a creature, and all he wants is to be up close. To run his eyes over every part of Dean, as if they were hands, and know him more every day.
Cas stares so much. It makes Dean uncomfortable at times, not because it's bad (not really) but because he doesn't know what to do with it. He can't look back for too long, the intensity burns him, but he can't say a word. He looks at his coffee cup instead, giving it all his misplaced attention as he takes a sip (its too sweet)....
When he looks up Cas is still looking, he’s so obvious it hurts. Truly it is not Cas’ gaze that bothers him, but the forever-watching eyes of everyone else. He’ll never be allowed to enjoy love, there are too many anchors, too many eyes, too many claws. Dean is a survivor, but he does not get to live.
The waitress comes over, one of the men is bold, flirty, nothing she hasn't seen before, but the other guy is unreadable, looking at the bold man with a look that could be love or hatred, depending on the angle. Neither of them orders food, just more coffee.
Cas watches Dean flirt with the waitress and wonders if his vessel is a barrier. If he forced his Grace into a beautiful woman would this be easier? It would. But for a long time now, this body has become Cas’ home. It isn't Jimmy Novak, it isn't a vessel, this is Castiel’s body. This is his home, and god (please), he wants Dean to love it as it is. He wants to beg for it, but he knows that's not what Dean needs, knows it wouldn't work. Maybe Cas should do it anyway, just to be honest. Just for something real between them.
I love you, I would go with you anywhere, even if it's just this diner, right now, drinking coffee.

Thinking about a 6-part miniseries about Cas. The premise being that there's some way for him to get back the memories that were taken from him, and he's going through the process of re-experiencing them (and this is why we haven't seen him yet, because he's been occupied with this).
So we're following Cas through time, seeing every instance of him going off-script, and every time it gets harder and harder to reset him. And there could be 3 or 4 actors besides Misha who play Cas at various points in history. And there could be returning spn actors for different angels as well as recasts for different "versions" of them. There would be a chance to get into some complex relationships between sibling-soldiers who are under a cult-like authority.
The way I'm imagining it, it would be "kalaidoscopic" to use Edlund's word for describing Cas' perspective. Non-linear narratives layering on top of each other, and making use of motifs and recurring elements in an almost dream-like way, building Cas' story as someone who fought to be his own person. The whole thing being kind of epic and fantastical and philosophical.
And of course it ends with Cas' reunion with Dean. I think in previous episodes there could be short little "missing scenes" situated within the main spn canon, to really re-establish Dean and Cas' relationship for any uninitiated viewers. But by the time it gets to the end, after following Cas' whole story, Dean is framed as the last instance in a long series of Cas' struggles to assert his own sense of right and wrong, his own sense of self. Dean is the time when it finally stuck. So there's a real narrative weight, within the 6 episodes, to them reuniting, it's not just for the sake of finishing what spn started.
And I'm still imagining the reunion scene being something like what I posted about here. Where Dean asks Cas to jailbreak Heaven with him, break the rules with him one more time, run away so they can live their own life. So that Dean is the realization of everything Cas' story has been driving towards.
And then the thing with Jack being taken over by God happens (see linked post). Because a) Cas can't just go off with Dean and leave Jack behind, so there has to be a reason for him to oppose what Jack's been doing in Heaven, and the answer to that is he's God instead of Jack. And b) the series ends on an open page, with Dean and Cas going back into the world as these twin agents of chaos and free will, and you have the sense that they're always going to be out there fighting for free will and fighting to be masters of their own lives, and the story will never end.
