Dramione Eighth Year Recommendations - Part One

Eighth year is one of my most favorite tropes. I just love the idea of these characters in a familiar setting post-battle. I’ve shared many of my favorite eighth-year recommendations in three posts. I hope you find some favorites!

Part One includes 40+ fics under 5k words—and in this case, good things come in small packages. 

Indulge Me by @millennialgrandma. M, 1k. A little eighth year Veritaserum-fueled confession of feelings.

Tentative Exporations by @dreamsofdramione. E, 1.2k. What Draco lacks in finesse he makes up for in enthusiasm. 

First Kiss(es) and the Path to Forgiveness by ak1494_millennialgrandma. T, 1.2k. Returning to Hogwarts for an eighth year felt like penance. Kissing Hermione Granger felt like redemption. 

a cure for headaches by @whimsymanaged. E, 1.3k. Hermione has a headache. Draco has a suggestion. (Hint: It's not a pain potion.)

What To Do by @willhavetheirtrinkets. E, 1.8k. "I can," she said, smirking at him. "I have that authority. Since you're always going at it quick and hurried, without the slightest attention to detail, I've been given the authority to make certain it's done properly."

Draco ground his teeth. "You can't tell me what to do, Granger."

Mutually Assured Destruction… by @grangerdangerfics. T, 1.9k. As Head Girl Hermione Granger and Head Boy Draco Malfoy wage an escalating war of aggressive acts of kindness, will it spell ruin ... or romance?

My Brown-Eyed Girl by @pacific-rimbaud. M, 2.1k. Draco and Hermione have a lazy snuggle in the grass behind the Quidditch pitch. 

Two Full Inches Above Regulation Length by granger_danger. E, 2.1k. “Granger.” Malfoy’s voice was an ember in the dark corridor. He grasped her wrist and she almost dropped her jar of bluebell flames. “Your skirt’s not to the bottom of your knees. I may have to take points from Gryffindor.”

Hermione rolled her eyes, though she doubted the Head Boy could see it. What nerve he had. As though he hadn’t hoarsely begged her to hem her skirt while he was still inside of her just last week. 

Never Have I Ever by @niffizzle. M, 2.1k. With a bottle of firewhisky, a set of enchanted cups, and a game of Never Have I Ever, things turn interesting during one of the final days leading up to graduation. But just how much will be divulged? Maybe some things should stay private.

A Whole New World by @simplifiedemotions. T, 2.2k. “Malfoy,” pleaded Granger, and oh, she was good. That pout was doing something ruinous to his insides, but he denied her.

“Come on, up-up, Granger—”

Or: Draco takes Hermione out flying.

H: STOP throwing notes at me ferret. And no.

This Time Tomorrow by sodamnrad. M, 2.5k. On the last night of school, Draco's unchecked feelings for Granger spill through the cracks.

A Different Kind of Magic by @canttouchthis87. T, 2.5k. Draco Malfoy watched Hermione Granger practice her Viola for six years. Returning to Hogwarts after the war, her music offers them both a place of freedom and sanctuary.

A Thousand Ways to Say Sorry by @wordswithways. T, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy goes on a gift-giving apology tour.

Lessons in Darkened Rooms by @raven-m-3. E, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy's eighth year at Hogwarts should have been simple, if unpleasant. Instead he finds himself grappling with a Granger-shaped problem.

Passing Notes by @shamione. E, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy has teased Hermione Granger for the last time, tucked away in an alcove with his fingers buried deep inside her. But her attempt to get back at him in Transfiguration is interrupted by none other than Professor McGonagall. Everything that happens after could easily be considered the most embarrassing moment of Hermione's life.

Just Desserts by @thelashjedi. M, 2.8k. Why would you talk to me?  Draco thought, behind a heavy wall of occlusion as he politely, but rotely declined the Head Girl’s offer to join her in the Great Hall, at the newly mixed tables set up in the wake of the war. 

Deal by @its-banannaz. E, 3.3k It was all a stupid deal, and why she made a deal with Draco Malfoy of all people? She had absolutely no idea. Suffice to say, she lost the game.

Just Like the Ones I Used to Know by @acciomjolnir. T, 3.4k. It's 8th year, post war, and Hermione isn't feeling in the Christmas spirit. She's not the only one who has chosen not to go home for the holidays... and when they get into the eggnog, all kinds of things happen.

Where You Belong by @ecaworks, raven_maiden. E, 3.4k. When Draco Malfoy shows up at the Burrow over the holidays, Hermione learns she has a decision to make.

Third Time’s a Charm by @monsterleadmehome. E, 3.4k. Head Girl Hermione Granger has been hopelessly trying to seduce Head Boy Draco Malfoy all term, but he just won't get the hint. Frustrated with her efforts, she tries one last resort—ordering lingerie from a Muggle catalog.

Respite by canttouchthis. T, 3.5k. Hermione Granger is fine. Or at least there’s no reason for her not to be. But still, she finds respite under the stars, drawn to the night sky.

Mutually Assured Destruction by witchsoup. M, 3.5k. Hermione and Theo find ways to break it to each other gently... it's time to break up.

Metals by @mycatalrhythm. E, 3.6k. After a month of not seeing new piercings appear on his body, Hermione was about to give up and just assumed he stopped getting new ones—until she heard Theo telling everyone that Draco has stopped getting piercings after his fifth one a few weeks ago.

She counted. Ear, navel, lip, tongue.

That's only four though?

at the coffee table by sodamnrad. M, 3.7k. Draco is the only Slytherin to return for eighth-year. Hermione is the only classmate who doesn't avoid him. Studying together in the common room, at the coffee table which becomes exclusively theirs, feelings for one another begin to unthaw.

Perfect by @kyonomiko. M, 4k. A very lonely 8th year through the eyes of Draco Malfoy. Everyone else seems to be getting along swimmingly.

Flying Lessons by cryptaknight. T, 4.1k Draco is surprised when Hermione turns to him for flying lessons, but then everything is a little bit different upon their return to Hogwarts after the war.

Study Habits by @indreamsink. E, 4.1k. The night before their last NEWT exam, Draco can't focus. Hermione devises an unorthodox method to help him study.

What We Didn't Do by @charlipetidei. M, 4.3k. Who? Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. Where? The Room of Requirement. Why? Seven Minutes in Heaven, of course. What? Well… who’s to say?

The Hogwarts Express by sam_fic. NR, 4.3k. “Draco Malfoy.” The way she said his name was almost reverent, but they both knew better.

“I can leave,” he suggested, without actually meaning it.

Her reluctance to interact with idolizers likely paled in comparison to his fear of being avada-ed by overzealous second-years.

But Hermione wasn’t one to make things easy for other people.

“Then, leave,” she replied, raising an eyebrow.

Coming Down by raven_maiden, @nikitajobson. E, 4.4k. Of all the things Hermione thought she'd learn at Hogwarts her eighth year, Draco Malfoy is by far the most unexpected.

No Death To This by maeshowers. M, 4.4k. The quicksilver of his eyes are piercing my entire being—like he can see everything that’s inside and wants a piece of it anyways. Despite my flaws, despite it all. He can have every part of me for all I care. It was only ever going to be his to begin with.

You Make It So Good I Don't Want to Leave by slytheringheights. E, 4.4k. It's late at night on the Tuesday before the big Potions exam and Draco can't find his textbook. When the Head Boy goes to the Head Girl's door to ask if she's seen his book, he hears the most intoxicating sounds from behind her door.

“Oh yes, please. Yes, right there, Draco…”

The Bowtruckles and the Beasts by @purplesugarquills. E, 4.6k. Molly Weasley brandished a copy of The Bowtruckles and the Beasts in one hand and a ripe, yellow banana in the other. Hermione could only blink, moments away from receiving The Talk from her ex-boyfriend’s mother.

This was, as so many things tended to be, all Ginny Weasley’s fault.

Somebody To You by @leilahmoon. M, 4.6k. Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy are idiots. Luckily, their friends are not.

Arithmancy and Quidditch by @grace-lou-freebush. E, 4.7k. Hermione and Draco are partners on an Arithmancy project during their eighth year, but Draco fails to meet up at their agreed upon time. When Hermione finds him down at the Quidditch pitch, she just might change her mind about how upset she is.

Baker’s Dozen by @darkofthemoonfic, Maria81. T, 4.8k. As part of the new and mandatory Muggle Studies curriculum, 8th year students are paired together for a year-long practicum in the culinary arts. If only Draco were interested in either.

Strange Birds by @heyjude19-writing. M, 4.9k. Her gaze is encouraging, and Draco can do nothing but linger on the precipice of terrible want with remarkable self-restraint.

She’s right here; solid and real and welcoming. Slipping through his undeserving fingers. Is he allowed a trauma timeline? He has no idea when it’s appropriate for him to reach suffering’s endpoint and move on.

He’s a thestral with a beating wounded wing, still desperate to fly for her, to her.

Transparency by @mightbewriting. T, 4.9k. In which Draco and Hermione slowly come together in their eighth year, as observed by a ghost.

💞 Luck of the Draw [Petcissa, T, 10.1k] by @madetofly 💞 A fascinating take on soulmates. Petunia as a Muggle in the magical world and bonded to Narcissa is wonderfully done in this story.

After Severus Snape revealed that Lily was a witch, Petunia wasn't surprised... What she wasn't expecting was to get an invitation to Hogwarts herself. No, she's not a witch like her sister. She's something else: a soulmate. She doesn't understand exactly what that means until she gets there.

💞 Falling and Flying [Kalicia, G, 2.5k] by JoRaskoph 💞 I adore this soulmates AU. The ending is a twist, and yet not a twist at all. I love the idea that you can hear your soulmate's thoughts!

Alicia Spinnet has a lot to deal with, even before she develops a crush on Katie Bell, who most definitely isn't her soulmate.

💞 you are my symphony [Susanne, T, 2.7k] by Someone_aka_Me 💞 The imagery and concise prose makes this story a breeze to read!

Susan has a symphony growing on her ribs every time she talks to Daphne, but there's also a war to deal with.

💞 And If I Had To Choose [Pansmione, M, 3.7k] by flipflop_diva 💞 Enemies to friends to lovers with forced proximity and bits of humor sprinkled in. A great build in only 3k words.

In a world where soulmates are discovered via a type of internal explosion, Hermione is bound and determined to have nothing to do with hers for as long as she possibly can.

I have been wondering how to answer this for a few days now. For reference, the post and the subsequent question (feel free to ask for more):

Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

The obvious one story to go to is the Crownless. But I've been scratching my head on how to answer this without giving any spoilers because most of the stuff that I'm like 'aljnglajbgklrbgl' about, has been planted, but has not yet come to fruition.

So, I'm going to say that there will be spoilers in this post up to Chapter 20 if you have not caught up yet, and the rest is going to be a massive tease for what's to come.

(Which I think is rather fitting as we enter the last few chapters of part 1.)

Hidden References

There are loads. I was brought up as a gamer, finding Easter Eggs is my crack. I'd love to go on about how, with the theme of wanting to fully embed the world in magical realism, I have incorporated a number of Easter Eggs from real life to enrich the text in a meta way - but that just simply isn't true.

I'm just a fiend who has a lot of fun with the freedom of fanfiction.

The most obvious one that near enough everyone who has commented has picked up on, is the Pirates of the Caribbean reference in Lucius' chapter.

My favourite Easter Egg of them all is that I have actually given away Raine's true identity and further hinted and the lore that goes with that identity. It's buried within the text, hidden in plain sight, which is in keeping with the theme of the story.

There's a fair few references to the Grimm Brother's, especially where the Black Forrest is concerned.

The narration style of 'describing the wallpaper' is a homage to Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, who have greatly influenced the humour and style of this entire fic. In particular here, the items that Hermione carries on her person is a direct callback to 'Hitch Hiker's Guide to Galaxy'.

There's a reference to Deborah Harkness' 'All Saints Trilogy' (highly recommend these books). I read these and fell down the alchemical rabbit hole that led me to the Voynich.

There are all sorts of popular culture references, from Marvel to Jane Austin hidden within the text, simply because they were on my mind as I wrote them and it brought me great joy to have the freedom to write them.

Not everything is serious. However, I am seriously considering going through and making an Easter Egg masterlist, and anyone who can name them all will get a cookie.

Characters, relationships and hidden foreshadowing (because I love spinning webs)

There are loads, every character has an arc, whether it be big or small. Someone once commented that they weren't sure whether some details was a red-herring and what was real, while another commented that every detail given is a clue.

Both are right, unfortunately - all details mean something but whether they're there for worldbuilding or character development is only something that can be seen when the point comes to light.

The two characters who show this the best are Theo and Raine.

With Theo, we start with this roguish, glib, charming character, who's a touch flamboyant but generally a smooth white-collar criminal.

With Raine, we start with a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde character - Dr Jekyll being quirky, weird and unassuming. In the beginning, we only see brief touches of Mr Hyde - the serious, cold and calculating General. The overall effect is a character that I am pleased to see no one trusts.

But the clues are in the names. They always have been, they always will be.

Just the same way that Fear was a foreshadowing from chapter 1...

For Theo, the reader has had some indication of his character arc since Chapter 2. This was re-affirmed in Chapter 13 and again recently in Chapter 20. Theo is closely tied to my favourite Easter Egg, whose name ties into this whole thing, and further builds upon Harry's canon identity, as we see in Deathly Hallows. I shan't say more, because spoilers. But you will find out soon.

For Raine, it's trickier. Again, it's all in the names, and as I've stated, I dropped that Easter Egg a while ago. But then the reader is told that 'Raine Willows' is infact a careless name, thought up in the spur of a moment. A name is an identity, ergo, what sort of Being cares little about that? Further to this, his journey is closely tied with Hermione's - always has been. The more Hermione has fallen down the rabbit hole, the more Raine has moved away from Dr Jekyll and become Mr Hyde.

The crux of their arcs is closely tied to the heart of the story. For Raine, he is Hermione's mentor. The other characters - Draco included - move around Hermione. She is the constant.

Much the same as the central plot. No matter how many side plots or whatever there are, it's all a helix towards the same focus point.

Part 2

It is my hope, that by the time we begin part 2, all the pieces will be lined up, ready to go. The Fuckening is one really really long introduction, setting the scene and laying the foundation. In order for the plot to exist and for our characters to go on the journeys that they will in part 2, everything has to break.

The allegory

Don't mind me whilst I put on my pretentious hat and dust off my critical thinking robes.

There is a fuck tonne of symbolism, sometimes in the staging of a scene, sometimes in the character's behaviour - Narcissa and Draco chapter 20, the character development of a Messiah.

But by now, if you've been following me or have spoken to me for more than 5 minutes, inevitably 'worldviews' would have cropped up. I sincerely apologise, I am aware that I am a broken record.

I started this fic in a really uncertain time in the world. As a STEM social science researcher, it's my job to look at the big picture and at the time (and still relevant to me now) the question was, wtf is going on?

So for me, along with it being a conversation about the psychology of love and friendship in a deterministic world, I wanted to highlight the importance of belief systems. I wanted to show from a psychological perspective how civilisation is built upon a very fragile network of beliefs both individual and collective, and the agreed-upon social norms only continue to exist, because we as a collective continue to perpetuate them.

I wanted to show how easily those belief systems can break which is why we begin with the disappearance of a horse and a somewhat intelligent cat. And the only way I could do that was to base canon in magical realism. A norm so adjacent to the ones we accept today, is one that will fracture everything so thoroughly and so quickly, that I won't have to write a tome to get my point across.

The Crownless is a story told from multiple perspectives, seeing and living the same long and winding conspiracy. And in worldbuilding, I have tried to show perspectives of different stakeholders, how politics is again, a delicate promise spun from beliefs. The Crownless is not meant to be a serious piece of literature, but it's my way of showing the hypocrisy of claiming Absolute Good and Evil in any situation.

Oh shit it’s like you know I’m already annoyed tonight. 

Alright, fuck it, let’s be a petty hoe.

Y’all. I’m a good fucking writer. Like... I’m pretty fucking good.

Arguably, if I wanted to put in the effort, I could maybe get published.

Because legit, my writing is better than a lot of the garbage that somehow gets picked up and gets popular.

I’m a good writer, and there’s nothing wrong with calling yourself a good writer.

And side rant - I’m so over people feeling as though, if someone recommends themselves or compliments themselves, that you shouldn’t do it - no fuck that. It’s 2021. Love yourself. Treat yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. Promote yourself, babe!

Like, wow bro. Fucking thanks?

So here’s my fic related rant - it’s 2021, and anyone can be a writer, and anyone can be a good writer if they practice it long enough, and being surprised that someone is a good writer? Wow no. Okay then.

Ex-fucking-scuse me.

Also, once again, still fucking annoyed that people still think that recommending yourself is somehow like a bad thing??? Like, this is an old problem, but basically, in big fandoms, there’s so many fics, the only way to figure out what to read is going off of recommendations.

And then it goes to small fandoms, who think, oh there’s only ten total fics, and if nine are recommended, then that last one must be shit. And like... idk maybe? But-

Then they go back to big fandom, which is... overflowing with people. And suddenly, people are like... well if no one else recommends it, it must be garbage.

There’s so many amazing fics, and this is not pertaining to any particular fandom - this is a huge issue in every fandom I’ve ever been part of since the whole like self-insult phase of 2014-2015, where recommending yourself was like basically saying you’re garbage.

there’s so many amazing fics that don’t get recognized, for like... no reason. And like... no one HAS to recommend a fic, but like... recommend yourself! Be brave be bold! You put yourself out there, and you deserve to be recognized. There’s no shame in promoting yourself.

How am I going to find your amazing fucking fic if you don’t tell me to go read the thing?!

Still apprehensive, she hurried downstairs, hand gliding along the cool wood of the bannister. The music increased in volume as she approached to see Draco lying down in the middle of the living room floor. He was barefoot, wearing a dark T-shirt and pajama bottoms. One leg was extended outward and one was bent, knee in the air. The room stank of alcohol and she noticed a half empty bottle next to him, spilled on the carpet.

Raiding her parents’ liquor cabinet and listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit. How very… suburban. With his longish blond hair fanned out on the carpet he even resembled Kurt Cobain from a distance.

Hermione strode into the room fully prepared to yell at him and abruptly stopped. One hand lay carelessly across his chest, the other was clutching the Galleon. There was blood all over the hand on his chest. What did he do? Her irritation immediately morphed to concern, and she quickly turned off the stereo and knelt beside him.

Draco’s eyes were closed. She couldn’t tell if he was asleep or passed out from alcohol. But he had only contacted her a few minutes ago. Her gaze travelled down to his hand. It was a mess of blood, but he didn’t look like he was in pain. For all intents and purposes, he appeared to be sleeping peacefully. Slowly, he opened his eyes and her throat caught at the despair and helplessness held within the stormy grey.

What happened to him?

Gently, she laid a hand on his cheek and he nuzzled into her touch, his eyelids fluttering closed again.

“You came,” he croaked. It sounded like he had been crying.

“Of course I did, Draco” she said softly. “What did you do to yourself?”

This is the idea that made me sign up for an AO3 account in November and got me writing again after a multiple year hiatus from original fiction. 1 novel-length work, 2 novellas, and many short stories later, I feel like I’ve grown tremendously as a writer in the last seven months. I am so thankful for all the wonderful people that came into my life because of my rediscovery of fanfic during quarantine! This fic opened a few bigger doors for me, and for that I am forever thankful.

A few rule reminders before we begin:

You must leave at least one comment per AO3 chapter

Your comment must include “Comment left as part of the Dramione Comment Fest” 

Based on the emojis, you will know whether to leave your reviewer only WARM FUZZY comments (🥰) or have the option to leave CONCRIT comments (🤓).  A note on concrit (constructive criticism): Authors have requested concrit *only if you have something productive to share* and fic-bashing will NOT be tolerated. For tips on how to give helpful concrit, I recommend checking out this post or this one. And if you don’t have any feedback on their writing, a warm fuzzy will always do! 🥰

A Few More Notes on Fest Structure

Because I really don’t know how to be brief. Okay, so! As this is Edition 1 of the fest this is all a bit experimental. I divided all the readers into groups of 5-6 based on reading preferences. I then assigned each fic to two groups (so each fic will be read by 10-12 people). I’M NOT REALLY SURE WHAT HAPPENS NOW. I’d love for this event to be interactive & community-building-y so I welcome any and all ideas of how to make that happen. Some of my ideas:

The Editor’s Chronicles

A collection of notes from my Alpha/Beta @canttouchthis87 For context, my Dramione WIP, the Fuckening is 200K+ and it’s a big ask for anyone to come through that mammoth and expect them to chase plot holes and watch for typos. But she does it magnificently week on week and I truly owe her my life at this point, I think. 

 Understandably, given that she is so close to the creation of the story, she has become suitably frustrated with the lack of fucking in the Fuckening. And so in amongst her corrections and edits, she leaves notes that vent her frustrations.

 We talked about one day, releasing them as a Fuckening add-on and so here is the first instalment of the new series: The Editor’s Chronicles.

I am positive, that with capacity for patience and tolerance that you a renowned for showing to your loved ones, I am certain you will understand that the shrill is a necessary procedure."

Dear Colleague at the DoM: I thank you for your letter, but would like to point out that there are no procedures within the Ministry's Manual of Compliance that dictate such a sound. In fact, there are expectations within the Manual that departments will ensure sound levels that allow for ministry staff to complete their work in a timely and sufficient manner. I believe if you review the manual, perhaps consult senior staff, you will come to a similar understanding.
