I was in Peredelkino on the weekend. Peredelkino is essentially a writers' village - it was created in 1933 to provide dachas (summer houses) for Soviet writers. It had around 30 wooden houses, a hotel, a Writers' Club, a library and a canteen. Most of the wooden buildings are lost to time, unfortunately. The first picture shows one of the two houses that lived (so pretty!) The canteen is in the basement of the Club and fully intact! We had lunch there and I was ecstatic to see they had one of the penguin podstakanniks and of course I had to ask for it! What a treasure!

Normally writers got 3-week all-expense-paid stays in Peredelkino, but some of the more outstanding ones had a chance to occupy a house (or half house) and live there with their families until the death of the writer.

There are 4 memorial houses (museums) in Peredelkino: Kornei Chukovsky, Boris Pasternak, Bulat Okudzhava and Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

A lot (and I mean, a lot) of famous authors and poets stayed in Peredelkino at some point. It's a place so full of history it's almost palpable. I'm definitely going back one day, so much yet to discover.

White Sun of the Desert is a 1970 Soviet Ostern film.

Its blend of action, comedy, music and drama, as well as memorable quotes, made it highly successful at the Russian box-office, and it retains high domestic approval. Its main theme song, "Your Noble Highness Lady Fortune" (Ваше благородие, госпожа Удача, music: Isaac Schwartz, lyrics: Bulat Okudzhava, performed by Pavel Luspekayev) became a hit. The film is watched by Russian cosmonauts before most space launches as a good luck ritual. english subtitles.

30 Episodes of My Podcast

On New Year's Eve, I published the 30th episode of my podcast. It's a justifiable cause for celebration and reflection.

The podcast's name is Пять минут, Five Minutes. That's the average length of each episode. According to my last survey, only about 40% of you listen to podcasts, and I can understand that. I'm a busy person, too, and often listening to podcasts seems like a waste of precious time. That's why I limit my podcast to just five minutes. And I know from experience that even five minutes can make a big difference in the listening comprehension.

The main idea of my podcast was to create authentic quality content for intermediate and advanced students. That's why the podcast is only published in Russian. And I don't change my scripts specifically for students. I just talk the way I would talk for Russian speakers.But each episode comes with a full script. You can listen and read along , which is a very effective way to improve your listening comprehension skills.

Don't be upset if you think my pace exceeds your ability to understand, or that the vocabulary is too advanced. You have scripts for your convenience. And you can always listen to an episode over and over again-it's only five minutes long!

It is always a good strategy to work with authentic materials. And if they are too difficult, take a slower pace and repeat the recording several times. What seems difficult will soon become easier, and you'll find that you're progressing faster than you expected at first. I've learned from my own language learning experience that the only way to make a noticeable progress is to set the bar high.

Each episode is built around one theme, and I always try to choose topics that might be of interest to Russian language learners. Here's a list of episodes, pick the most interesting one for you and enjoy!

Good evening!

I've been pretty chill this week, just working through a lot of old serials and cross-posting things, and also finishing up an Our Flag Means Death fanfic!

Alongside my original work I'll also be participating in the Our Flag Means Death Big Bang, which is a challenge for fan artists and fan writers to match up and work together on a longer-length project! Definitely check it out, and sign-ups for artists are still open, so you can definitely jump in.

Media Recs

Spontaneous (2020, dir. Brian Duffield) - Okay, don't let the posters for this put you off, because it's actually surprisingly good and heart-felt, and I really appreciated the humour in this. It is a cishet love story and the two MCs are both pale blond people, which is obviously a turn-off, but for all that, it's weird and kooky and genuinely funny. There's an epidemic in a small US town where high schoolers keep exploding with not explanation and no known cause. It's about teenage trauma and survivors' guilt, broadly, and it's very ridiculous and OTT.

Newark, Newark (2022, written and cr. Nathan Foad, dir. Amanda Blue) - I've been meaning to watch this for a little while because it's created by Nathan Foad, who plays Lucius Spriggs in Our Flag Means Death, and I love it, and I hate it. Everyone in this is so cringe and so terrible and so horny, 5 stars for the show and 5 extra stars just for Foad, I hate him, this is excruciating viewing, I will probably rewatch it many times, it's excellent.

New Amsterdam (2018--) - A friend of mine repeatedly recommended this to me and I resisted because none of the main cast are hot, but now I'm actually watching it and it's, infuriatingly, really quite watchable. It's basically about a doctor at a big New York hospital who's attempting to introduce "socialised medicine" (Yanks) despite working under a for-profit system, and it's fun and easy. I will say that the writing is not irregularly saccharine, and it's very much an attempt at a utopia where there's almost always an easy fix at the end of the episode (in one episode, for example, two parents have to divorce so that the mother can apply for the cost of their son's medications as a single mother, and they're serious Catholics, so at the end of the episode to set their son's mind at ease a cardinal literally is like "this divorce is okay, the Pope says it's cool"), but if, like me, you like nonsense soaps like these to watch in the background, New Amsterdam fits the bill, and it does good character work that's a lot more consistent than my other beloved trash show, Chicago Med. No Oliver Platt though, so lose a mark for that.

Bulat Blues (2019, Daniel Kahn & Vanya Zhuk) - This isn't a new album, I've just been relistening to it a lot the past few weeks and it's really good - Daniel Kahn is a favourite artist of mine, and he does a lot of Klezmer and other Jewish folk music; Bulat Blues adapts a lot of the music of Bulat Okudzhava and translates to English with a little of the original Russian still in, and it's good.

75k, complete. Rated E. Gen with Frenchie/Izzy, Izzy/Lucius; background Blackbonnet, Lucius/Pete, Oluwande/Jim. Izzy's just so buttoned-up, how is Lucius supposed to resist the urge to seduce him? It doesn't go well.

Playing with both the crossover of genre conventions between Stede's universe and Izzy and Ed's original one, but basically doing a deep dive into trauma response and navigating complex relationships between the crew and Izzy when Izzy is forced into a position where he has to share revealing and intimate things about himself. Lots of focus on the aftermath of abuse and trauma, playing with freeze responses and the way the different crewmembers navigate all this.

I cling to a lot of idealistic and daydreamy hypotheticals about cultural history that would never pan out in practice, but whomst among us does not retreat to their little scenarios when the going gets tough. For example something in me is absolutely convinced that the Znak/Więź/Tygodnik Powszechny milieu, the self-styled PRL "Catholic opposition" who fancied themselves social democrats and free thinkers (or many of whom did), would have turned out differently if, maybe starting around 1948 when people were in less shock about the war but the relitigation and competing martyrdom hadn't escalated to such a fever pitch, or at least the early 50s when Stalinism was coalescing but critically BEFORE 1956-58--anyway if someone time traveled and translated a ton of Soviet bard songs into Polish, Okudzhava especially, and pulled a Found Manuscript forgery where nobody knew it was Soviet so they didn't reject it out of pocket, they just heard beautiful acoustic songs in a folk style about war and loss and Universal Human Experience, of course also subtly critiquing the gov't but importantly not doing so in a nationalist or a religious-revival way, not defaulting to those tropes...I think I could fix them...

The point of this playlist is that - in general these songs in the romance genre that I like -

but I also want to imagine Dimi and Malenkee fleeing the country on a train, borrowing a guitar from some students and he'll strum the chords and they'll sing and it'll feel really intimate (meeting each other's eyes on very specific lyrics and all that).

Very brief explanations (in brackets I'm giving the number the song is under on the Spotify list):

"Black moth" - old immigrant 'cruel romance' about sex work and nostalgia - Paris version.

"Black moth" - newer and slightly more censored version of the same song - Harbin version.

(1) "At last I'll say" - this Akhmadulina poem - generic romance about being ruined by love.

(2) "Fluffy bumblebee" - Romani style romance song about following your love to the ends of the earth.

(3) "Love - a magical country" - generic romance song about how love hurts and makes you lie etc. but also enables happiness.

(4) "Down my street" - this Akhmadulina poem about people leaving your life but also coming back.

(5) "That's what's happening to me" - this Yevtushenko poem about connecting with the wrong people and missing the right ones.

(6) "I like that" - this Tsvetaeva poem about... casual love? I cannot really explain it - just read it. (there are also three thousand translations - choose your favourtie).

(7) "Nobody will be in the house" - this Pasternak poem about how your lover saves you from wallowing the past.

(8) "I asked the ash tree" - a little nature themed poem about finding out that your loved one suddenly married your best friend.

"Murka" - the classical cruel romance (though its censored and least criminal version) about betrayal, jealousy and murder.

(9) "The tired sun" - tango/romance about sad but peaceful break up.

(10) "Black Eyes" - another classic about missing someone a relationship with whom had a big impact on you.

"White Night" - here's the full translation but it's two similar scenes - with your lover and without them - missing them.

"I don't need you anymore" - a Tsvetaeva poem (couldn't find a proper translation) about correspondence and just not needing someone anymore - just because.

"My little one" - this Tsvetaeva poem (translation in the description) no explanation.

(11) "A shed tear" - this Brodsky poem about reminders of tragic romances (I guess).

(12) "Love and Separation" - this Okudzhava poem about how love and separation are inseparable (and also literally eloping).

(13) "Why did we switch to 'you'" (as opposed to capitalised You) - an Okudzhava poem about how switching from 'You' to 'you' actually removes something from a relationship.
