Canadian Cartoons Are Great

Today, the popular cartoon YouTuber Saberspark uploaded a video talking about the infamous “fart episode” of the 2023 Total Drama series. The comments were filled with hatred and generalizations towards Canadian animation. These terrible comments are not the fault of Saberspark, but it is true that the “big users” in the cartoon community are (mostly) Americans who spread myths and stereotypes about Canadian cartoons. This has bothered me and a few others for quite a while, so here, I’m going to prove why Canadian animation is great, actually, and dispel common misconceptions
All Canadian cartoons are about fart jokes - if you say stuff like this, you clearly have never seen a Canadian cartoon outside of Total Drama and Johnny Test. That’s like if I said “all anime is naughty tentacles” or “all American cartoons are about anvils falling on your head.” And don’t act like your precious USA cartoons and anime are exempt from toilet humor. One example of an anime with toilet humor is Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt - their first episode was about a monster made out of shit. And we all know about the gross out cartoons such as Ren and Stimpy.
Canadian cartoons are cheaply mass-produced because of CanCon - No. What CanCon ACTUALLY states is that a certain percentage of content on a Canadian channel has to be Canadian-made. The policy is about supporting Canadian art, not “mass-producing” cartoons, since this applies to ALL Canadian TV and radio content, animated or otherwise.
Now, let me tell you some reasons why Canadian animation is actually great
Some of your childhood shows, such as Arthur, Franklin, and Little Bear are Canadian in origin.
Some of the most acclaimed cartoons within the cartoon community, such as Ed Edd n Eddy and MLP:FIM, were both animated in Canada and had voice actors from there (same talent pool, in fact - Vancouver)
Inspector Gadget and the Beetlejuice animated series helped keep good animation afloat during the 80s. In a decade full of uninspired and insipid cartoons, these were two of the highlights.
Canada is still a great place to outsource animation, as proven with the works of Nelvana, Mercury Filmworks, Jam Filled, and countless others.
If you grew up without cable, you probably watched PBS Kids and/or Qubo a lot. Guess what - lots of the shows on both of those channels were Canadian. For example: the PBS Kids Bookworm Bunch: Timothy Goes to School, Seven Little Monsters, Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse - these shows are all Canadian! Qubo was also home to Jane and the Dragon, Jacob Two Two, Babar, Spliced, etc - they’re all Canadian too.
Because Canada’s censors are far more lax compared to American ones, Canada has made huge strides in teen and adult animation. Such shows include Total Drama, 6teen, Detentionaire, Undergrads, Producing Parker, etc as well as the movie Heavy Metal.
Also because of the lax censors, Canadian cartoons had positive LGBTQ representation far before the United States did. One episode of 6teen has a character stating “I’m gay,” and in Braceface, the main character assists her gay friend in finding a boyfriend. Unsurprisingly, these episodes never aired in the US.
6teen also dealt with periods before Turning Red, Baymax, and Molly McGee did it (again, the episode was banned in the US).
Finally, here are a few Canadian cartoons I recommend, and where to watch them:
Cybersix (it was a Canadian and Japanese co-production). The whole thing is on TMS’ YouTube channel.
Redwall is on Pluto, and there are episodes of it on YouTube courtesy of Treehouse Direct
Toad Patrol (unfortunately you’re gonna have to resort to low quality YouTube uploads)

Ruby Gloom is a great show if you like cute gothic stuff; it too is on Tubi and Pluto
The Adventures of Sam and Max: Freelance Police - on Tubi
One of my favorites, The Raccoons. Basically the Canadian equivalent to The Simpsons, and with a banger ending song. The show’s production company has uploaded episodes of it for free on YouTube.
The original Clone High was animated by the legendary Nelvana (if you’re wondering, the new season is not outsourced to Canada 😔) It is on Paramount Plus and HBO Max
Undergrads - yet again on YouTube, in low quality unfortunately. Like Clone High, it was on MTV.
I also recommend watching some short films from the National Film Board of Canada. My personal favorite is the Log Driver’s Waltz.
Tl;dr - American cartoons are not bad because of Allen Gregory, anime is not bad because of Pupa, and Canadian cartoons are not bad because of Johnny Test or fart jokes.

@thenightpost tells the tale of conscripted postal workers in the strange setting of Gilt City, feat. a lot of queer love and found family. There are 38 episodes currently available and they're about halfway through Season Three at the moment. The plot is definitely thickening. Transcripts are linked from every episode in the shownotes. Their patreon offers early access to new episodes and some wonderful bonus stories.
@monstrousagonies is an advice show for monsters. enough said. but for good measure, it's softly spooky and has a lot of heart. There are 43 (edit: there are 71 I just can't read apparently sorry!) episodes already released, and many of them are written in response to prompts sent in by listeners to the show. The creator opens up submissions for episode prompts now and then, and submissions will be opening for Season Three fairly soon, so if you have a monstrous agony you'd like to see advised upon, keep your eyes peeled. Transcripts are available on the show website and they have a patreon!
There is also our own show, @spiritboxradio, the story of an unlikely radio show host who discovers he has a bigger part to play in the spooky events unfolding around them. The show is full of queer characters and aims for a growing sense of spookiness that builds as the show goes on. The part that genuinely scares you is that, sometimes, late at night, you hear Alexa turn on and start chatting. Then, when you go downstairs, you see Home sitting next to Alexa, who is chatting away as if someone is talking. As far as you know, Home can't talk... but nobody else is there. You are unsure as to whether or not Home is aware that Alexa isn't sentient, but considering how these puppets are sentient, you are willing to bet that you might be the one in the wrong.
📺 You have caught Wally trying to get on your computer and watch, specifically, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared. He seems to be growing obsessed with that show. You are a bit concerned that it might influence his behavior or something, considering how he has always had a different vibe compared to the rest of the puppets (Home doesn't, too, to be fair), but he always finds a way to get the computer or phone. He likes the episode about creativity the best.
📺 Julie has a fascination with internet drama, now. Specifically the drama between makeup artists, since that is the type of content she tends to consume. She has also begun saying things such as "hey sisters", and showing you videos by the channels she likes. Surprisingly, she hasn't watched James Charles, and got the "hey sisters" line from a much smaller channel. She also has started watching a bunch of LGBTQ+ YouTubers, and shown Eddie and Frank them, as well.
📺 Sally has begun making plays based on the newer cartoons and shows she has watched. As of lately, she has gotten into Batman content. Batman content in general. You don't know HOW she got to more mature Batman related content, like Gotham or The Batman 2022, especially because you have been trying to keep the childish innocence of the puppets in case they find a way back into their show (you are scared that them getting exposed to too much mature content might harm the show if someone finds and watches it)... But she has. You suspect Julie might've found pirated versions and showed her.
📺 Poppy has gotten into TikTok baking. She tries to recreate the recipes she finds, to great success! She once presented you with this huge cake made to look like a unicorn. It was so cute you didn't want to eat it. When you did, however, you were surprised to find that it tasted like Jolly Ranchers.

This post only about any info posted as of 7/25/2023 (will update in future if needed).
Ok so I’ve been following the Angelica Asmr shit pretty closely (don’t expect me to comment on gwen gwiz too because that girl is a grifter from the start). And as a mental health worker it REALLY freaks me out for her. I worked in a rehab for awhile. For people quitting drugs, but many of them also had bipolar, ptsd, schizophrenia, and similar diagnosises (some people also had the behavior due to being in crisis as well due to loss, recent homelessness, police brutality, etc.). So I know what psychotic breaks look like. I won’t armchair diagnose anything specific because I am not her medical provider, but while I can’t say she has anything for certain - she has a history of manic episodes in the past.
As someone with ADHD, a history of sexual and religious trauma, and c-ptsd like Angelica, I can honestly see how she fell into this. As someone who is also anti-capitalist, I can see why she thinks finding community would be beneficial (not sure why she would choose the Catholic Church instead of something from less individualistic, Eastern philosophy doesn’t make sense to me personally though...) to finding growth in an online era of isolation following a personal loss in her life. It seems weird how she went from talking about her Jehovahs Witness trauma from her youth...to going full on Orthodox, but I’ll get into details on why mentally this is actually super common in a minute.
I can also see how she would become a SWERF after having done OF, since as a former sex worker myself (camming, porn, fssw) who quit doing it after being raped - I can safely say that I myself am neither pro or anti sex work. I’m pro-decriminalization to keep workers safe, but also do feel a bit sick sometimes that MOST fssw on the streets are marginalized people. It is a complicated issue with nuance that non-sex workers have no business taking a side on. However, she is very hateful recently and anti-sex in general. Which is an issue.
She originally joined OnlyFans during a manic episode. So she HAS a history of mental illness and making major life decisions during mania. 
She went from pro-lgbtq to anti-lgbtq. Deleted her old progressive videos. Claimed to be a victim of MKUltra. Started making up delusions around the Catholic Church being anti-capitalist (Catholics individually can 100% be leftists, but the Church itself is VERY Capitalist). She posted homophobic and transphobic tiktoks where she would yell practically incoherently. Lots of staring. Inability to talk without looking away and laughing (she is normally a skilled actress).  Posting WAY more frequently than ever(she reposted 3 deleted videos last night and deleted them by this morning). She posted a video and lots of shorts and is way more active on Instagram. 
 The worst breakdowns I saw working rehab mostly always cycled through 4 topics: fame/self importance, inconsistent political and religious rambling, and sex. Always. Angelica has shown inconsistent spiritual beliefs (she has been mixing up Catholic, Orthodox, politics, and other religions). She has been focusing on sex in the context of trauma and posted a short of her in a bathtub on youtube again. She has been posting and immediately deleting content that has even positive comments on it.
Some medical signs of possible mania and/or psychosis that she is exhibiting:
Paranoia, trouble talking in a clear way/rambling, withdrawing socially (posting more often/online more but also alienating from her former fans), Confused speech, trailing off/lack of focus in videos, Generally disorganized way of thinking, no sign of restraint in expressing self, racing speech, goal-directed activity (seems to have a new anti-sex work goal), distractable/trails off topic, random giggling at nothing at camera like it is a person she is conversing with...etc. Tbh the amount of red flags I’ve seen are alarming.
I hope she gets support and help. And it is one reason I can’t blame her as hard as I would most, because she seems clearly unwell.  It isn’t an excuse. At all. And I don’t blame people for not supporting her going forward, but I plan to keep an eye on the situation for now and am hoping that somehow she can pull out of this shit, because I’ve seen this shit happen to a LOT of people with hard lives. Hell, I’ve even lashed out in smaller degrees and been delusional during my own ptsd breakdowns too, but when people are as far gone as Angelica is...I don’t usually see them come back again to the same state they were in previously. I’m hoping for the best, as a former fan and as a social worker, but Idk.

Before I dive in-depth into discussing the readings and meanings of each card, I want to share the incentive energy I grasp here: honesty. My cards are very honest in delivering information this time, for one, but I also sense that Ming is very honest (to himself) in approaching matters with Bummie now. He is able to better communicate his needs, discuss his concerns, and very importantly, reflect on his mistakes (!) & becoming ready to be a better boy for kibum. This does not mean their bickering nature changes immediately. Rather, as we see in the Live Alone episodes, Ming could now consult ways that fuel their dynamic without hurting bummie or himself. These joyful fights drag Bummie closer instead of pushing him away, and hurting Kibum is what Mings regrets the most in their relationship.
7 of Swords in the Past position matches my reading. In the plain sense, this card means betray. Ming had failed bummie in the past times. What he had believed (the swords he held in his arms), e.g., hetnormative thinkings, helped him accepting his new image, adjusting to work in the industry, and bonding with other SHINee members (and other workers), but it had turned away bummie (the sword behind him). Ming was an insecure boy struggled under the shadow of his father (a soccer couch who naturally prioritizes competitiveness, results, and seniority rules) and an older brother minseok who was better at everything than him at the time. That's why Minho desperately believed he must overcome any challenges to prove his worth. Minho weaponized this mindset, so stubborn even if the blaze hurt people around him. I mean, he is never someone aggressive, but he fought with bummie as if he was not mad at kibum but himself. Mad at the idea of not being the strong man he promised himself to be. He did not realize what protected him is the cloak (people around him, family, friends, SHINee members), not the sword (his will power) ...The distance between him and bummie made Ming lonely. His heart is the crescent hanging on the night sky that longing for love and connection.

In one sentence summary, Ming does not feel content of how their relationship functions and he is heartbroken because he sometimes feels one-sided putting most effort. Kibum can be cold and out of reach, as Ming experienced during the military times, and as I joked with my friend when I was doing the cards-pulling, Ming sometimes sees himself as a "clown". He addresses it to bummie but has no confidence in changing their relationship (and changing bummie's attitude) to what he desires: a more honest, heart to heart, same-level love energy dynamic. This is not the "world" or reality Ming wants and he is trying his maximum BEST to alter. However, there is an fundamental unbalance between his and bummie's view of how they should interact, and if you read my readings of bummie's view on the other post later, you will understand it is both out of insecurities.
For Ming, the insecurities come from the pain of losing a great great friend. We have a reversed 5 of coins, the dream of 5HINee achieving success together was shattered like the broken mirror - and one coin, our dear jjong, stays in this never coming true dream forever. My cards are very honest, as I said earlier, and my heart ached when this card came to me. Jjong's death changed Ming tremendously. In ways he now views friendship, relationship, and any intimate interaction. Do you notice how Ming takes photo of everything and every moment he shares with close friends? He maxed out his phone storage on bummie, as if the grieving taught him pictures and videos are the only things he can go to when he lost loved ones. He is afraid of idea of losing bummie (and of course other SHINee members), because after jjong, ming finally realized he is just a little boy hiding under the cloak. Hiding under the protection of his hyung. He was never strong enough to protect himself and what he loves - and this is why, he dedicated himself to work out the “problems" in his relationship w kibum.
To hold bummie closer is to put his shattered reality back in place.

I usually don't do romantic readings on RPS. But the lovers dropped and as I said earlier, getting the "man & man" lovers card is a 1/81 ratio that I think my cards is trying to tell me something. We gotta give major Arcana some respect. And obviously, it gets more evident *spoilers alert* when the SAME lovers card dropped in bummie's result.
I want to keep this section short because it preys on their private life, and assuming anything can be disrespectful. However, considering Ming has posted both rainbow flags and the the notting hill bookshop LGBTQ+ themed books...I will share what I have read on the cards. A lot of tensions between ming and bummies still come from their different opinion of intimate relationship. Bummie has not fully forgive ming because in a small corner of ming's mind, he still holds on some of the hetnormative thinkings. He does not realize that there is an option of love. Or more frankly, he does not realize what he wants (the level of love) from bummie is what bummie only gives to his romantic LOVERS. And only when ming stops "overcoming" the idea of man to man love unnatural (as to support bummie), but truly accepting it (as himself doing it) can make the world right for him and bummie.

The lovers card in the future is a beautiful and mind-assuring result, because before that ming still has a long way to go. We have the reversed 5 of cups here, stressing how the past events left scars on ming to a breaking point. He is/will be overwhelmed with pain, sadness, and the feeling of helplessness when trying to forge deeper bonds with bummie. The refusal hurt him enough that he almost gives up. But giving up is not really Minho isn't it? And bummie is sensitive. When bummie finally comes around, forgives ming, and accepts that he no longer can avoid ming's sincere heart, things will be good for them. Things will be great. They will have each other's back and heal together from the past memories, and from losing jjong. The moon will be full.

Here’s what he looked like (this photo’s by Marc Zicree). There are other pics via his Wikipedia page, which has much more about him for those of you who might be interested. And you can hear a brief interview with him here.
His Star Trek script for “Amok Time” has already been getting some discussion... which is as it should be, as I don’t think there’s any ranking system that wouldn’t put it at least among the top ten ST:TOS episodes. For that episode Ted created the Vulcan “Live long and prosper” greeting (to which Leonard Nimoy added the now-famous hand gesture, adapted from one that originated in Jewish ritual tradition).
Sturgeon also wrote ST:TOS s1e15, “Shore Leave,” which is completely different in feel from “Amok Time”, but in which you can still clearly hear the grace of Ted’s writing even when he’s being (for the circumstances) really funny. But that was always one of his gifts -- for being serious without necessarily being at all somber. (Disclosure: Ted was a fixture in Los Angeles SF fandom in the late 70s, when I moved there, and so I was lucky enough to run into him pretty often at conventions and other functions of the local fannish circles. He was kindly and funny, one of those people who could critique someone’s writing both gently and incisively... which is a real gift.) 
His TV work was a grace note to a long and distinguished writing career that started in the pulps and quickly surpassed much of their other content. As Neil says, Sturgeon’s writing about love and relationships was unparalleled, and unquestionably far ahead of its time in terms of LGBTQ-friendliness.
His work is worth getting to know. My advice to everybody is: go find some, and experience one of the great voices of our field.

Create any kind of fanwork, post about it here and @ us using the appropriate tags! As long as it’s Malevolent and related to aromanticism/arospec identities, you’re good to go. Fics, art, cosplay, music, crafts, headcanons, etc; any and all types are welcome! We just ask that if you include an image in your post, please include an image description in the alt text or in the body of the post.
✦ Why aromanticism and not just queer?
While Malevolent is not an explicitly queer podcast, the show lends itself to queer readings, and as such has built an audience of predominantly LGBTQ+ folks. Due to the nature of the characters, the ways they relate to one another and their environment, we believe that particular respect should be given to arospec identities within the show, as in fandom such identities are typically overlooked in favor of romantic dynamics. The creators of this week are both aromantic and wanted to create an event that further explored those aspects of their favorite podcast :)
✦ Does it have to be strictly aromantic?
If you mean, does the content created have to be strictly and exclusively non-spectrum aromantic, then no. This event includes all kinds of aromanticism from all across the spectrum. You want to write a fic about John being grayro and falling in love with Oscar? Go for it! Wanna draw a comic about Arthur being a loveless aromantic? Be our guest!
However, we only ask that the main focus of the week be aromanticism and not other related orientations. Exclusively arospec content is rare in online spaces, and we'd like to change that.

You’re welcome to go off-script and create anything you like as long as it relates to some aspect of arospec identity within the podcast. Posts off-script or without a prompt will be reblogged on the final day (Dec 10th.)
✦ What content is allowed/not allowed?
We encourage any and all varieties of fanwork and the content within it, as long as it remains on-topic and related to aromanticism. As the source material also deals with a variety of heavy and challenging content, we believe that listeners are well aware of their own limits and can curate their online experiences accordingly. That said, NSFW content and colloquial “triggering” content will be allowed and may be shared on this blog, as long as it remains in line with Tumblr’s policies, though we will do our best to tag accordingly; feel free to refer to our tag guide for examples. Story Pile: D.E.B.S.
The term ‘cult classic’ gets used more than I’m comfortable with what with having been in a cult and not being considered classic by anyone, but I do think it’s important to recognise that the term has some weight. For example, this movie, D.E.B.S, pronounced ‘Debs’ is considered a cult classic of LGBTQ media. It does this in a way that if this movie came out in 2023, it would be considered a pretty funny epsiode of a TV Show, with no edge or bite to it. It looks like a pretty fun Onlyfans promotional poster. It has the overall aesthetic of The Porno Version Of Itself. D.E.B.S. is a lot of things and one of them is cheap.
But it’s also a lot of fun.
Content and Spoiler Warning: I think it’s important to say up front that despite being a pop-punk comedy movie from 2004 renowned as a ‘cult classic’ in queer communities, this is a movie that both asks and tells, and to my surprise featured just one instance of ‘oh well that didn’t age well’ in the form of an incidental drop of the r-word. I’m also going to spoil the whole movie’s plot but don’t worry if you’ve ever seen a TV Show you’ve probably already spoiled it for yourself.
D.E.B.S tells the story of a something-like-a-college where young women from I think mostly just schools in the United States, who else does the SAT? Oh, France, I think. So France and the United States. Anyway, it’s a test that runs under the SAT that finds out if you’re secretly good for recruiting into the D.E.B.S, which stands for… something, it doesn’t matter. You know the vibe of like, Josie and the Pussycats? Yeah, that, that, it’s that kinda thing. What, that’s not a universal touchstone?
Look this is a camp superhero special effects driven James Bond style movie that looks like a really fancy episode of a TV show. And when I say camp, I mean it – there’s this persistent reliance on excess in its presentation. You don’t just see a viewscreen of a shouting boss, you see every frame in the building a viewscreen of that shouting boss. And let me tell you when Michael Clarke Duncan shows up and shouts as the opening of your movie on a hundred screens, you’re kinda setting the tone for how subtle you don’t want to be.
This movie, which you might notice I keep calling ‘this movie’ instead of its actual name because typing out its name is annoying, is notable for being one of a long list of box office failures that some people think is great. For example, John Travolta is probably a pretty big fan of Gotti, a movie with a budget of 10 million dollars that maybe made a generous six million dollars. This means that Gotti‘s difference between its budget and take is about 3.6 million dollars, which just happens to be about the combined budget and box office take of D.E.B.S. Which is to say, this movie cost about 3.5 million to make and made maybe a hundred thousand. If we’re generous on the rounding.
I guess I should also say that when I say ‘this is a gay movie’ I mean it. This movie asks and tells. This movie is about two women who are of the time I think meant to be particularly hot, but not, you know, improperly hot, who get involved with one another and there are makeouts and they’re shown in bed and someone else calls it a lesbian fling and they ride off into the moonlight together. It’s not just unambiguously gay in the way we say that about anime where the girls touch each other’s hands, it’s like, gay enough that active denial runs aground.
You might be kinda surprised to learn that this wasn’t super common. Sure, girl on girl kissing showed up in things but it wasn’t like it was a proof of anything gay – Cruel Intentions was a franchise spun out of, essentially, one girl-on-girl kiss from characters we spent decades arguing isn’t really actually lesbian. You see women making out in The Sopranos, it doesn’t make that a piece of great gay media of the 00s. But it is surprising! Effort was made and these are two distinct-from-one-another women, one openly lesbian, one curious-then-considering-then-committing, and they have a relationship with disagreements and common interests and this shouldn’t be so bloody remarkable!
Stripped to the studs this is just a typical high school drama story set in the generic space between 15 and 20 that is meant to be young enough to be universally relatable but old enough that nobody needs to consider it’s probably a crime to want to see anyone’s nipples. It’s in the same it’s just a school drama story with dating but the school drama is about spies, and instead of the head cheerleader and the prom and the will-they-won’t-they-quit where the bad boy gets a haircut and learns to talk nicely to someone’s parents, are a Sexy Spy, the prom is the Best Spy award, and the bad boy is a bad girl.
I’m not about the somewhat muddy politics of the ambitious black member of the group being lying and conniving and in the way, until she’s not. It’s one of those things where in a cast of four characters, where you have to dole out the roles of Main Character, Idiot, Asshole, and Narc, the only place in the calculus where the black girl doesn’t get handed a stereotype ball to run with is main character and while this movie was trying interesting things, it wouldn’t try something as interesting as letting a black woman play the central protagonist in a queer action comedy with an otherwise principly white cast.
Which is a shame because that sure would be interesting.
What else is there, hmm, oh yeah, the characters have terrible trigger discipline, but also the guns are pretty comically shiny and silly. Like I’m sure a serious gun person could watch this movie and dismantle all the silly ways the guns are handled. Oh yeah the soundtrack whips, it’s not like true bangers of the era but it’s the kind of sound, the vibe of the times. Scud. I like Scud. I think Scud is pretty funny and walks the line between obviously evil and obviously hilarious. Uhhh what else then, what’s left.
And, uh, it’s fun! It’s really fun! It’s a funny movie, though not for the reasons it necessarily thinks it is, and it’s a movie that’s trying to be funny. It’s funny because it’s a little bit awkward and a bit cringe and it’s trying hard to do things that are at the time pretty fun and positive, even though it’s just…
It’s not good at it.

I noticed people creating such descriptions on Tumblr, I assumed that I could do the same so that the people who visit my blog would be less confused about what they're seeing here. After all, I'm really open to communication, but it's probably better if you know what to expect from me:)
So, who the h am I?

Sometimes I post some funny observations connected with my professional background, and even though some of them might seem tiny bit salty, I love my occupations wholeheartedly (except for some episodes of working with people, people are truly annoying sometimes).

My taste in music is very vast and it'll be difficult to limit it to one genre or a group of artists, but I can easily name some of the most influential performers for me: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Dusty Springfield, Judy Garland, Fleetwood Mac, Czesław Niemen, Marek Grechuta, Volodymyr Ivasyuk, Okean Elzy, Skryabin..
I would love to bond over music with anyone with similar tastes <3
I also absolutely ADORE cats, they are my "spirit animals", so they are going to appear in my blog sometimes.

Fun fact, the story of Hades and Persephone has actually been romanticized since long before Twilight came out. Never mind antiquity, but in terms of modern media, the earliest example I can think of comes from Hercules: the Legendary Journeys, where the episode that retells the Homeric Hymn to Demeter came out in 1995! And if we do account for antiquity, the Ancient Greeks themselves saw the marriage as ideal and there actually are a few ancient sources that basically have Persephone preferring Hades and the Underworld to being aboveground with Demeter, but it should also be noted that these sources are Roman and not Greek (specifically Virgil's Georgics and Lucan's Pharsalia).
Don't get me wrong, Twilight definitely had a lot of influence here, I just thought I'd point out that this interpretation of the myth has been around for way longer than most people probably realize.
Oh I know, but that's sort of next to the point I was trying to make in that previous post. When I compared it to Twilight I guess like... I'm comparing it to the entire genre and trend of shitty manipulative romances being both romanticized as well as turned into "global phenomenons". Like they were romanticized before but at least they were just shitty cheap books in the back of the bookstore, you know? Now that they're turned into these big Hollywood fiascos, it makes it even easier to normalize these types of relationships and concepts. Even if we look back on Twilight and 50 Shades now and call it out for what it is, there are still a lot of people who absorbed those books/films in incredibly damaging ways (especially younger audiences in Twilight's case). You are what you eat, is what I'm saying. And it's a much bigger problem than LO but I do think LO is a symptom of the problem, which is - instead of stories being written by men through a toxic male gaze in which women are objectified and hypersexualized and men are told not to cry, now we have stories being written by woman through a toxic female gaze in which women are "empowered" by being carried around like dolls by an emotionally stunted man who wants to cry but just whips them in the bedroom instead.
It's still pretty much the male gaze but with extra steps.

IDK if I'm explaining that well though LMAO Obviously I don't want to generalize and reduce the entire dark romance genre to its worst writers but this is why it annoys me to no end that stories like Twilight, After, 50 Shades, and LO keep getting propelled to the forefront of the genre zeitgeist. It makes the people who aren't a bunch of creeps writing their kinky self-insert power fantasies look bad just by affiliation. And it sets an incredibly shitty standard for those who are introduced to the genre through these works.
The reality is (and I'm speaking very candidly here from my own experiences so take with grains of salt if you must, you don't have to agree) being a woman - or being an under-represented minority/individual in general, whether you're LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent or POC - doesn't mean you're magically protected from thinking or writing the same stuff as the problematic majority. You are what you eat. If you grew up consuming toxic heteronormative content (which EVERYONE does because it's FUCKING EVERYWHERE LMAO) then of course you're gonna go on to write the same stuff unless you challenge it in some way, either by reading other opinions that don't "play it safe" just to look good, or reading other content entirely that isn't subject to the norm of "what's popular". Always be willing to broaden your horizons and don't forget - just because it makes a lot of money doesn't automatically mean it's good.

Why does Rarl exist?
Before I start, I would like to say that I appreciate these two, and am in no way bashing the ship, I just spent 20 minutes talking about it and want to talk about it some more.
Spoilers for the walking dead ahead
So.
Okay.
As I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure that Ron and Carl only have 3 positive interactions.
1: When he introduces Carl to Enid and Mikey. (Where tf did Mikey go?)
2: When Ron and Carl talk at that party, Carl snatches cards from someone's hand.
3: When Rick and Carl are teaching Ron how to shoot.
Everything other than that is just pure chaos.
I do have a few theories.
One is what I like to call The My Hero Academia Paradox: If two characters exist in the same universe, there are people who want them together.
Let's face it, even if you don't ship them, they're aesthetically pleasing on some level.
The second, Carl is queer coded. I couldn't tell you how, but he is. It may have a similar effect to how autistic people (such as I) are more likely to be LGBTQ+ because they lack an understanding of social cues and norms.
Carl was very young when the world shit itself and his social norms completely changed. After Merle kicked the bucket, I don't think anybody ever mentions anything revolving around race or sexuality after that, because they have bigger fish to fry than worrying about those things, and thus, a lot of worries about those things that most young, queer, people have I don't think Carl would go through, at least not at the level that we do.
There are dead people, nobody really cares all that much about who you kiss.
Also, let's look at the social norms difference. At that point (and I'm only mentioning these two because if I didn't this post would be as long as War and Peace), but at that point, Carl had killed his mom and was almost barbecued a few episodes prior to meeting Ron.
And even before that, social norms are out the door, as well, so I don't know if this would be how it worked, but due to the state of the world being so fucked, I think maybe Carl would have a higher percentage chance of being queer. Hence, queercoded. (that and his use of flannels /hj)
My third theory is just projection: When people like characters, they project onto them.
In my fics, I put Carl through the 7 rings of hell, and then as soon as he crawls back up, I kick him in his head and throw him back down. I love him. He's my favorite character. I would drink his tears if I could.
And so, queer people writing or just making fan content about him, finally get another male character his age and like, fall on the ground giggling and kicking their feet, or just looked at the two of them and were like "Eh, if it fits it sits" and thus Rarl was born.
(Also an honorable mention for people just being whores for enemies to lovers)
But I seriously want to talk to the person that first decided this was a good idea. What Myspace or tumblr post started this?
I want to know.
I have no answers for why this ship exists, and I want some.

MOONLIGHT CHICKEN – DIRECTOR AOF'S CAMEOS (AND SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT)
It's now a tradition with GMMTV series directed by Aof Noppharnach Chaiwimol (and sometimes in those produced by him as well) that you can expect cameos from the directors/producers somewhere along the way.

At first I thought these appearances were purely for laughs, but now I think there's also a measure of tacit messaging going on whenever producers, directors or assistant directors pop up on screen (see this link here).
So after Assistant Director Au Kornprom's cameo in Moonlight Chicken Ep.5 [2/4] (see this write-up linked here), I was on tenterhooks waiting for Director Aof's own cameo. And sure enough he showed up later in the same episode: 👀

But remembering that their cameos aren't always in person onscreen (e.g., Producer Aof's and Director Au's cameos in My School President) – Director Aof has actually had four cameos in Moonlight Chicken. The one above is his sole live appearance in the series, but he was also referred to by name at three other points:
Ep.3 [1I4] 2.11;
Ep.3 [1I4] 2.17; and
Ep.7 [3I4] 6.35.

Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but when read together these appearances don't signal quite the same upbeat positivity of the cameos in other series. Part of it is surely contextual – there isn't much levity at all in Moonlight Chicken (except when Saleng is around, perhaps) and Director Aof's cameo scenes are all ponderous with suggested import.
Looking first at the scene of the Marina Food Court project meeting in Ep.3 [1I4], we see that Director Aof's name is used for two key players on the team.

The parallels with real life are striking – we have team leader Aof who is project director, just like Khun Noppharnach is often in the director's seat for GMMTV shows, and team member Nop who's in charge of the presentation slides, just like Director Aof is also someone who controls the visual storytelling onscreen.
Remembering that the Marina Development threatens the existence of Jim's diner, livelihood and his found family – it's highly unusual that Director Aof's cameos here should be aligned with the forces that loom portentously over the story's protagonist, instead of on his side. 🤔
So this is what I think it means – the characters of Nop and Aof holding influential positions on the Marina Food Court team may be a nod at Khun Noppharnach's other role at GMMTV, on the side of management – he's also Senior Director of Content Production (at least according to his MDL page, at time of writing):

No disrespect to GMMTV – they've given us a whole raft of amazing shows – but as a commercial entity I'm quite sure their focus on profits doesn't always align with Khun Noppharnach's more activist visions, especially when it comes to greenlighting shows that go heavier in pushing LGBTQ+ rights (e.g., The Eclipse and Not Me).

It's sometimes a weird and uncomfortable mix, when shows with a serious social conscience lean against a backdrop of blatant commercialization. I'm thinking of series-associated merchandising, in-show product placement, fan meets and pair branding (e.g., the fanservice couples such as FourthGemini, BrightWin, OffGun, PondPhuwin, ForceBook, FirstKhao, EarthMix and JimmySea). There is no doubt in my mind that there must be constant pressure to dial back the political messaging in favor of more traditional BL storytelling (i.e., lighter and with more focus on romance), that's easier to spin out into various income streams targeted at the teen and young adult market.
With the characters Nop and Aof, I think Director Aof is calling out the inherent paradox of him being part of the machine that commercializes queer love and queer relationships, often forcing it into certain shapes and flavors for maximum saleability to straight audiences, while he and his team of writers (I think) would prefer to be championing LGBTQ+ rights instead. (Sometimes the mixing of the two does work, as in Bad Buddy, but I think that's more the exception than the rule.)
Anyway, things take a darker turn when we look at Director Aof's in-person cameo at Ep.5 [3I4] 14.46. He's cast in the role of a restaurant server, dressed in funereal black, who is unsuccessful at lighting the fire that must have been burning at some point between Alan and Wen. He's also told that his services are unnecessary (when Wen says "No need to" in response to his offer to rekindle the burner):

Director Aof then leaves the scene, but he doesn't do this by slipping quietly off to one side – instead, he loops around and foregrounds his departure as he crosses between the action and the camera before exiting screen left:

OK, so a lot of this is conjecture, but the ominous undertones here are unmistakable. The fire having gone out between the (erstwhile) BL couple, and Director Aof's inability to relight it, could be signaling that he's no longer fired up for the BL genre, or maybe thinks he's no longer needed for it. And his crossing the screen to exit also suggests that he might be making a change or departure of some sort. It may be signaling just change of role though, not entirely a change of job perhaps (so let's not lose our heads over this quite yet).
I'm further propelled along this line of thinking by the general themes and plot reveals in Moonlight Chicken, where the ideas of rebirth and new beginnings may also be pointing at the same for Khun Noppharnach (noting that Moonlight Chicken's protagonist Jim is also a middle-aged gay man who finds his way to new beginnings later in life).
Jim giving up the diner for a life of greater freedom, selling khao man gai from a mobile food truck instead, may also be communicating Director Aof's desire to return to smaller vehicles for his craft (bearing in mind that his great love is directing queer dramas, about which he's posted on Instagram before – see this link here).

With this in mind, I'm also getting a sense of Khun Noppharnach having handed over some key duties to the next generation (which I think is also part of the messaging behind Au Kornprom Niyomsil's cameo in Moonlight Chicken – write-up linked here). This is further underlined by Au Kornprom's second cameo in Moonlight Chicken when he passes the bubble tea redemption card to Jim (a stand-in for the current generation, i.e., Director Aof), to hand over to Li Ming (the next generation):

As for the Ep.7 [3I4] funerary display carrying Khun Noppharnach's name (among all the other wreaths at Mrs. Hong's wake, written up here) – it's a message of condolence from his notional family, so it's in keeping with the somber and serious tone too.

Funeral wreaths are meant to offer comfort to those left behind, but another way of looking at them is that they are also a send-off for the departed, a final Bon Voyage so to speak (if you believe in an afterlife beyond the present one that is). And if the messaging thus far is that Khun Noppharnach may be looking to broaden his horizons with other endeavors, perhaps the subtext underlying his cameo in this scene is that Mrs. Hong isn't the only one embarking on a new journey – it looks like his cast and crew are bidding him farewell. 🤔
But what might those "other endeavors" be? It could be he's stepping back from his GMMTV management role to focus more on directing and/or indie filmmaking. That's one possibility and I think it's the most likely, since it parallels Jim in Moonlight Chicken shifting his life's work to a smaller, more nimble vehicle, no longer tied down to a fixed edifice (his diner, standing in for GMMTV perhaps) and its heavy attendant responsibilities.
Then again, this being an election year (2023) – my mind is reeling with juicier possibilities. Could it be that Khun Noppharnach is eyeing a stint in politics perhaps, just like Director Golf Tanwarin's previous turn in Parliament? 👀
I know it sounds a little farfetched, based on only one appearance and three mentions of Khun Noppharnach's name in Moonlight Chicken.
But there have been signs of heavier political messaging in recent GMMTV shows. Not Me and The Eclipse were both commenting on the oppression of existing power structures on the LGBTQ+ community. Meanwhile, My School President and Moonlight Chicken separately also spoke of dinosaurs in positions of authority that need replacing in order for LGBTQ+ rights to move forward:

And Moonlight Chicken itself also has embedded themes that nod at the political (see this write-up linked here), while Wen himself has spoken directly about the need to have queer MPs defending LGBTQ+ rights at Ep.7 [2/4] 8.04, saying "I may become an MP candidate. If I'm chosen I will write a new draft bill."
If a political future is really what all this is hinting at, it seems a little strange that Khun Noppharnach would choose to announce something this momentous in such a veiled manner, so I'm not entirely convinced myself that this is where it's all going. (And even if my guesses are off the mark, which they probably are based on track record of previous predictions, hah! – I'm still convinced that significant change of some kind is in the offing.)
But then again – given the love Khun Noppharnach has for his craft – if he was going to make an announcement of this magnitude, what more heartfelt way is there to do it than via his beloved medium of film and drama, in a series with queer love and awakening at its heart? 💖
