/gen but why white ppl shouldnt take offense? /srs
white people shouldn’t be offended when myself or other poc people say we hate them because in no way shape or form does it affect the quality of a white persons life.
in a society fuelled by systemic and every day racism, where white people are viewed as the superior or preferred race, where there is no pressure for white people to have to change their dialogue or appearance to be accepted — they have no place to be offended.
me, a black woman and person of colour has no power to make a white person feel oppressed in the way that i do. racism towards white people literally does not exist because of this. there can be prejudice but no racism. but in the reverse, if a white person were to make a comment like this it could harm MY life or my opportunities as a woman of colour.
every day, poc people are fighting to undo centuries of colonisation, racism and hatred geared towards us and generated by white people themselves. to be seen as equals. the least a white person could do is take a hit when i say i hate white people lol.
and anyways, i obviously don’t mean it towards people who are actively trying to do better. it’s like saying you hate men, do you hate all men? no. but do you hate what they’ve done to society? yes.
white privilege is rooted within racism, which i face on a daily basis whether it’s obvious or not — i think i have the right to be frustrated after like 400 years of slavery + the current state of the world !!!

One of my pet peeves in film is when a movie is good but it could’ve been great.
Spirited (2022) was an honesty brilliant concept and almost flawless execution, with some missed opportunities and one glaring fault. I wanna go over what I loved about it and what I would’ve changed.
This will contain spoilers.
First of all, I love that it’s a musical, and furthermore how much it embraces the fact that it’s a musical. I mean the choreography is incredible, and the music is catchy and doesn’t shy away from its musical theatre-ness at all. In fact, I could see this translating into a stage adaption really easily.
Secondly, I love the concept. Seeing the inner workings of the afterlife in this universe is fun, and adding the layer that the Ghosts of Christmas were once alive adds intrigue, and on top of that adding the element that the Ghost of Christmas Present is Ebeneezer Scrooge himself is brilliant. It gives new meaning to Jacob Marley running the operation, and seeing them working side-by-side adds some complexity to the relationship.
Speaking of I ADORE Patrick Page as Jacob Marley. He is the perfect fit for the role, both in his haunting form and out of it. I wish he had gotten more screen time in his chains and they hadn’t kept interrupting his song because you know he was cast for that deep, haunting voice of his and I wish we’d heard it more.
I think the secondary cast was very good. Past and Yet-To-Come were funny and Octavia Spencer was charming and lovely as Kimberly, it’s wonderful to see her in the role of the love interest. Clint’s family tugged at the heartstrings perfectly, and Ryan Reynolds played a very entertaining douchebag but secretly lovable softie.
I think the themes of this movie were a natural continuation of the themes from the original book and, while not always consistent with the canon of the original book, felt faithful in its message.
Here’s my main contrivance though. The one main thing I’d change if I were able to.
Will Ferrell was wrong for his role. For one thing, I personally don’t think Will Ferrell is very funny. On top of that he’s just not a good singer. Like, at all. I mean everyone in this movie was at least a little auto tune, even the professional singers, but even all the auto tune in the world can’t stop Will Ferrell from sounding mediocre at best. Fine for musical cameo, but not for a leading role. Additionally, he’s not a very good Christmas Present, or Scrooge.
I mean, it makes sense for Ebeneezer Scrooge as we see him at the end of the book to become the Ghost of Christmas Present. He’s awfully jolly after waking up. But at no point in this film is Will Ferrell playing “jolly.” Present should be big and boisterous and loud and the kind of person where you can’t help but smile when you see them.
Someone like Patrick Page.
That may sound out of left field but hear me out.
I know I already said he was perfect for Marley, and he is, but I think he would’ve suited the role of Present/Scrooge so much better than Will Ferrell does. Patrick Page has played Scrooge many times before so he has good experience with the character. While Page is known more for his cold, cruel characters he, plays warm, soft, and joyful well too. And this very movie is proof of that fact. I mean…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that smile.
And perhaps most importantly, Patrick Page is fully capable of carrying a musical as its leading man. You know why? Cause he can fucking sing! Boy can he sing. And while the deep, gravely tone he’s known for may not be your first thought when you think Ghost of Christmas Present, it would work well for Ebenezer Scrooge, that’s for sure.
I know this movie is a comedy and Will Ferrell is a comedic actor, but honestly, I think this movie would work well if Present played a bit of a straight man to contrast with Clint’s constant jabs, with his joking being a way of him deflecting. That’s not to say Present can’t be funny, but I think Present being depicted as warmer, kinder, less witty and more of a guiding hand to Clint would make him a character you care more about and want to see succeed.

I have not seen the new Velma show and probably won’t see any of it. I HAVE however, seen people complain about it and I watched the trailer where Velma was complaining to HBO Max about some show getting redone in a way she didn’t like.
I have some thoughts about that.
In the trailer, Velma makes a point of telling HBO Max that changing the characters and the story of some movie was a bad move and “nothing should ever change.”
Obviously, this is satire. It’s meant to predict and call out the audience ahead of time. It’s the trailer’s way of telling the audience that they should give the Velma show a chance, and writing it off because they changed the characters and premise would be petty - and racist, as the trailer implies (Velma sighs and says to herself “At least Main Character is still white”)
The Velma show, however, seems to have deviated from the franchise for shock factor. Velma is a drug dealer, Shaggy has the personality of wet bread, and Fred is misogynistic. Also, Scooby isn’t even there.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with thematic changes, so long as you stay true to the original source material - but they haven’t. There’s also nothing wrong with changing characters up a bit, so long as you do it tastefully. They haven’t done that.
Honestly it’s ironic - they warned the fans not to write it off because of all the new elements, and the fans hate it because the new elements are done BADLY. That’s interesting. Almost like the whole popularity of the show was banking on the idea that making something more modern is automatically better. Huh.

not to be annoying but i do think a lot of people mischaracterize falin. shes got the most drastic canon v fanon thing going on. which i guess makes sense bc 1. we dont see much of her and 2. lot of the fan stuff are anime-onlies that have seen even less
but i think like a good 90% of the time i see falin-centric art or posts im like hrm hrm hrm thats all wrong no nope no-siree
she's just a cool chick that takes life as it comes, doesn't hold grudges even against a mother that apparently was trying to beat the magic outta her, finds her older brother the coolest person in the world, and has autism about observing life (and death, she loves the ghosts she has a connection to) and nature and taking care of things (including taking care of her brother, which is why she's even in the dungeons; she saw her scrawny mess of a brother and decided she had to fix that).
and i think my favorite part that people don't talk about is... she would have done the same for marcille or laios if it were one of them that was eaten. you could see it in her eyes:
Tumblr media
it's what shuro misunderstands about her. it's easy to see her feminine, cute, good girl pieces and forget the rest of her. but she loves things to an ends-of-the-earth extent; the kind of caring that makes you a little insane. and that's how I think she and laios end up on the same page with their weirdness. they have different interests, but they are the same level of committed to those interests.
it's easy to love her, because she probably loves you just as much, if not more.
EDIT: for the love of god stop reblogging this only to add some comment or tag or reply saying 'op you forgot [BLATANTLY FANON INTERPRETATION]'. falin as we know her is not a pushover/people pleaser/infantilized, see this version of my post. also stuff like 'female shuro was in love with laios in the genderbent comic' and 'falin was going to marry shuro because she felt bad' are just things you made up in your head

calling my lover "mine" but not in the way that my toothbrush or notebook are mine, mine in the way my neighborhood is mine, and also everybody else's, "mine" like mine to tend to, mine to care for, mine to love. "mine" not like possession but devotion.

changes and trends in horror-genre films are linked to the anxieties of the culture in its time and place. Vampires are the manifestation of grappling with sexuality; aliens, of foreign influence. Horror from the Cold War is about apathy and annihilation; classic Japanese horror is characterised by “nature’s revenge”; psychological horror plays with anxieties that absorbed its audience, like pregnancy/abortion, mental illness, femininity. Some horror presses on the bruise of being trapped in a situation with upsetting tasks to complete, especially ones that compromise you as a person - reflecting the horrors and anxieties of capitalism etc etc etc. Cosmic horror is slightly out of fashion because our culture is more comfortable with, even wistful for, “the unknown.” Monster horror now has to be aware of itself, as a contingent of people now live in the freedom and comfort of saying “I would willingly, gladly, even preferentially fuck that monster.” But I don’t know much about films or genres: that ground has been covered by cleverer people.
I don’t actually like horror or movies. What interests me at the moment is how horror of the 2020s has an element of perception and paying attention.
Multiple movies in one year discussed monsters that killed you if you perceived them. There are monsters you can’t look at; monsters that kill you instantly if you get their attention. Monsters where you have to be silent, look down, hold still: pray that they pass over you. M Zombies have changed from a hand-waved virus that covers extras in splashy gore, to insidious spores. A disaster film is called Don’t Look Up, a horror film is called Nope. Even trashy nun horror sets up strange premises of keeping your eyes fixed on something as the devil GETS you.
No idea if this is anything. (I haven’t seen any of these things because, unfortunately, I hate them.) Someone who understands better than me could say something clever here, and I hope they do.
But the thing I’m thinking about is what this will look like to the future, as the Victorian sex vampires and Cold War anxieties look to us. I think they’ll have a little sympathy, but they probably won’t. You poor little prey animals, the kids will say, you were awfully afraid of facing up to things, weren’t you?

something i’ve been thinking about lately is like. growing up muslim right after 9/11 is something i’d never really reflected on much because it was all i’d ever known — at 5, my friend’s mum didn’t let her invite me to her birthday party because i was the only brown girl in our class, at 12, my classmates would joke about my family being part of isis, at 16, my dad was interrogated by american airport security for hours — and it always stung and it always hurt but it was just the way things were because the western world hated muslims. but i don’t think i’ve ever fully comprehended the extent to which we were hated until now.
palestine is being turned into a mass graveyard. every single day there are new photos of the atrocities being carried out against them and videos of them pleading for help and still those who can actually intervene turn a blind eye. israel is claiming to only be targeting hamas “terrorists” while bombing a refugee camp. israeli police raided and assaulted a non-zionist jewish neighbourhood. israeli soldiers are posting tiktoks of them torturing captured palestinians. this is not a complicated issue and it never has been. ethnic cleansing is being committed right in front of us. and yet the western world leaders refuse to call for a ceasefire.
and while zionist organisations accuse pro-palestine demonstrations of anti-semitism, while zionist celebrities insist that they’re afraid to leave their mansions in los angeles, a six year old muslim boy was stabbed to death and his mother wounded in the same attack in chicago. a muslim doctor was murdered while sitting outside her apartment complex in texas. hundreds of peaceful protesters have been arrested (many of whom have been jewish). despite what zionists want you to believe, this is not a jewish/muslim conflict. i have so much love and gratitude to my brave jewish brothers and sisters all over the world who are condemning israel for their actions.
ultimately, israel have been granted impunity by the west. they have slaughtered thousands upon thousands of innocent palestinians. they have bombed hospitals and schools indiscriminately. they have used white phosphorus, violating the geneva convention. they have completely eradicated nearly 900 bloodlines. how many more need to be wiped out? how many more children need to be buried underneath the rubble? how many more doctors need to be confronted with the bodies of their own family members? how many more journalists need to detail the horrific acts of violence they are witnessing? what more can be done to the palestinian people that has not been done already?
i truly believe that palestine will be free one day. i believe the palestinian people will receive the justice they finally deserve. but what breaks my heart is how much they have suffered and will continue to suffer before they are deemed worthy of help. and it would be to all of our detriment if we ignored how much of a factor palestine being a predominantly muslim state has played into the way the world has reacted to their genocide.
