Blame it on the Vodka – LN4 Martin Garrix had invited you to the king’s day celebration in the Netherlands, load so of people were there, famous influencers and artists and then there was you. Technically you could be categorized under the influencer division, yet you were nowhere as known as most the others here.

The invitation only got to you because you went to school with the DJ.

You were now a nurse working in a trauma center in the sunny state of Florida. A couple of years ago you and a friend started a podcast just for fun and your following on both the Podcast as well as your usual social media grew fairly quickly.

Though you were not even close to some of the people here it, your podcast and work was what made you happy.

The party was loud, you got on a boat around noon and were immediately greeted with a drink and an orange shirt to put on. You scanned the crowd around you once you had pulled the fabric over your head. The boat wasn’t huge, but It was big enough to fit a lot of people you didn’t know.

The whole city was a Party, boats on the water and orange things everywhere. You loved a little bit of partying so chances were you’d have some good fun out here. Able you probably needed a glass or two before you could truly come out of your shell.

You made your way through the dancing bodies, recognizing a face or two and giving people a big smile and muttered sorry as you squeezed past them towards the DJ Desk to greet Martin.

As soon as he spotted you his face lit up. Next to him was a familiar face, be it only from TV. F1 Driver Lando Norris, a glass in hand chatting to a girl next to him. You reached him and he immediately pulled you into warm hug. “How’ve you been? How is life in the sunny state?” he smiled.

“Oh its great! Work never stops, but I am really enjoying life over there. The Podcast has been going well.” You responded. That wasn’t the whole truth, your life was rather busy than chill and enjoyable. You were more or less working two whole jobs. Juggling being in the media and the chaos of the ER weren’t always easy.

“How’s Daniel?” he asked leaving you debating what to say. You and your boyfriend had recently broken up and it wasn’t a pretty one.

“Oh… yeah well I don’t really know” was all you said, pulling a confused look from Martin. “OK well I have someone id like you to meet, you still enjoy motorsport right?” he switched the topic. “Of course I do.” You said, you knew what was coming. He was probably going to call Norris over to the two of you. And that is exactly what he did. “Lando come over here really quickly.”

The Brit, clearly already a couple of drinks in waddled over, quickly excusing himself from the woman he was chatting to. “This is a old school friend of mine, Y/N. I think you two would get along well. She doesn’t know that many people here. Maybe you could put your chatty self to use and introduce her to some people around here.” He said half joking.

The curly haired man looked at you. “Well hi, I’m Lando and apparently I am your tour guide, its nice to meet you.” He smiled. “Well how about we go get you a drink.”

And with that you walked off with him to the bar.

“You strike me as a Aperol Girl.” He thought out loud. You chuckled, he wasn’t wrong. But you weren’t about to go easy today.

“Well you’re not wrong but ill take a Vodka-O, if I want to get through today ill need something strong.

“Alright then, ill take another one of this and a Vodka-O for the Lady please he told the man behind the tiny bar, sliding his empty glass over the counter.

You lost him on your way back towards the middle of the boat. The swimming party had set of and was cruising around in the calm water surrounded by a ton of other small boats with partying people on them. You had found some familiar faces to have small chats with but quickly returned to dancing to the music playing loudly.

At some point you were stopped and checked by some harbor police who wanted to make sure everything was safe.

The alcohol had started to make you feel just the right bit fuzzy.

You grabbed another light drink and walked back to Martin who was jamming out just like the rest. On your way back you noticed a small group of people all standing around one individual. You went closer to investigate whatever was going on.

Getting closer you were greeted with the slightly bloody face of the British man you were introduced to earlier. He was clearly more drunk than you.

“Well what happened here?” You asked. Still grinning he responded. “Weeeelllll, I was dancing and someone smacked their glass in my face and it cut my nose.”

Ok so nothing bad. “Well what do we do now.” Someone you didn’t know said next to you.

“Aright someone get me a first aid kit. That cut won’t need stitches.” You said grabbing a tissue.

“Mind if I have a closer look Lando?” He shook his head no so you stepped up to him and wiped a bit of blood away.

“Well at least its not in your eye.” Someone set down the first aid kit next to you. You quickly went through it checking what you got. Grabbing a little light, some gauze and tweezers you turned back to your patient.

“Aright let me just have a look.” You stepped even closer to him. He was sitting and you were not, so eventough you weren’t as tall he was looking up at you.

You just now noticed the pretty color of his eyes and long lashes that put most girls to shame. Now almost standing between his legs you shine the light at the wound. It looked fairly clean cut, though a small piece of glass was still lodged in the wound.

“There is still something stuck in there, ill have to get it out. Stay still.” You said before you grabbed it with the tweezers in one quick motion. It came out easily, it did also earn you a tiny wince from Lando.

“You look like you know what you are doing.” He said, eyes questioning.

“That’s because I do, I am a nurse.” You responded quickly while searching through the little medical bag for some disinfectant a bandage and some steri strips.

“Aright lets clean the wound quickly. Cover your eyes with you hands please. And this might sting a little bit.” You warned him before spraying to quick sprays of the disinfectant on the wound.

He flinched at the coldness.

In your half drunken state you rewarded him with a little pat on the head, like you would do to pediatric patients at your hospital.

You dried of the wound and leaned down a little further to better place the strips to hold the skin together.

“What a view that is.” Lando said, probably before thinking about it.

The comment made you blush a little. Your shirt was pretty but also warm and not too revealing but given the position you were in his eyes were on the same level as your boobs.

You quickly finished up placing a small bandage.

“Okay you are free to keep partying but watch out for dancing missiles.”

“Well thank you very much for your help miss nurse.” He smiled back.

“How about I say thank you with a dance.” A offer you could simply not decline. He didn’t waste any time pulling you towards a small free space to dance. His steps were a little wonky, but you got there eventually.

In all fairness the man knew how to dance, your bodies were getting closer to eachother with each song and the tention was getting stronger.

Maybe coming here, despite not knowing people, wasnt so bad after all.

Well, @mercurygray/mercurygray set out to fix that. The Darkening Sky is full of women having conversations about real things.

This epic asks the question: what would it be like if women went to war with Easy Company? No, but really though?

There are a lot of OCs, and a personal challenge I have with reading OCs is that I already love the canon characters. So for me, OCs have more work to do in fanfic than they do in novels, because they have to shoulder aside my blorbos. (This is me - there are a lot of OC writers and readers in this fandom and bravo to you all! I’m simply explaining a barrier I have). 

But fairly quickly, they established themselves, and over not too long a time, I grew to love them.

The main relationship is between Joan Warren, niece of General Pershing and society gal of Nixon’s ilk, and Dick Winters - she’s flirtier than he is, and more outspoken, but just as driven and in essence just as private. It takes them A WHILE to get going, because it would - these are two serious people with serious things to do, and they take love seriously too.

And all right, I’m just going to put it out there - was it a challenge, as a card-carrying winnix girlie, to hop on board that train? 

…not really? 

It helps that Nix ships it (which, like everything here, is shown and not told, and with delightful subtlety). It helps that Joan is awesome, a fully-fleshed out character with flaws and frustrations, narrative drive as well as personal drive. It helps that this is just another world where the Nix-Dick friendship didn’t develop that way, from Toccoa onward. There is no "We'll go to Chicago, I’ll take you there." It’s not what happens. 

(This fic also doesn't straightwash - there's not a ton of focus on m/m or f/f relationships, but they're there).

But Joan and Dick, much as I love to read about them, are not the only focus of the story. POV shifts all the time, sometimes to Shifty, sometimes to minor characters like Aldbourne residents or land girls, and we get an idea of what the war is like for them, as well as their perspective on Easy Company in all its camaraderie and complexity. 

It probably goes without saying that in a fandom full of heavily researched fics, Merc’s stands out as being the most meticulous. She knows her shit, and I knew that going in. But there’s a difference between throwing in facts and details for the sake of it, and doing it to further the experience of the reader. I felt like I learned things, but never like I was being taken to school - when I learned something it was because I was gaining context about a beloved character or understanding more about how the world would work for women in these circumstances. And they don't all have the same experience! Life for Lieutenant Joan Warren, reluctant media darling, is very different than it is for Sergeants Billie Mitchell or Marj Gordon (just to name a couple of my favorites).

These women never stop being women, and being treated that way, for better or worse (often worse). And there's something heartbreakingly frustrating but also beautiful about that.

Marj’s new haircut looked good on her - Doris wasn’t proud of a whole lot, these days, but any time she caught sight of Marj with her helmet off she had to smile. I did that. And she looks damn good. Marj’s honey-colored pageboy was starting to get a little long at the edges, but only enough to make Doris regret not bringing her scissors so she could do everyone else’s. Her fellow sergeant looked…free, without the hair, released from some burden of responsibility to look like she belonged somewhere else and might well be there soon. Why didn’t we do that earlier? Doris wondered to herself. It’s a war, not a beauty pageant. We’re not winning awards.  Because we’re still women, and we still want beauty. Because it’s hard to change something like that.  Because we all want to go right back to the way it was when this is over - even if we know we can’t. The way it was. The phrase made Doris want to laugh. They weren’t those women and men any more, the kids who’d arrived at Toccoa, and it was foolish to think they might be. Look at any of them, bruised and scarred - look at Marj! And even if they hadn’t changed, the people at home would have. (Look at Marj, again - and fuck Allen, while they were looking.)

I'm actually going to not counter your "one size fits all statement," but maybe complicate it a little: strap is strap. obviously preferences will vary between different partners, but if you're not shopping for the tastes of any specific people there are no right or wrong answers here.

(if I'm misunderstanding the situation and there are already sexual partners actively in rotation, then the answer is easy: just ask them what they'd enjoy.)

Fic ideas

I have a few more ideas for fics, but have a hard time writing two, since I can't focus on both at the same time. There's been some circulating in my head for quite a while now: 🌸 Feyd-Rautha x Atreides!Reader (Bene Gesserit) Where you are once more the sister of Paul Atreides and were going to be promised to Feyd as a bride, had the people known you existed that is. You were kept secret by your mother and Leto, trained to be a Bene Gesserit by your mother, specialising in healing. You were able to flee with your mother and Paul and lived with the Fremen. You saw the rise of the Lisan Al Gaib. You kept having dreams that made no sense, as you were not allowed to drink the water of life. Visions of Feyd, you learned very late, as seeing him for the first time struck a nerve. After the duel you get overwhelmed by sadness and your body moves before your mind does, effectively saving Feyd and bringing him back from death. And that's basically where the fic starts... There's no such thing as an arranged marriage or an easy way to navigate feelings. But it sounds like fun in my head HAHA. Strangers to lovers.

🌸 Feyd-Rautha x Atreides!Reader (no BG) You were effectively trained in several martial arts but most of all the fighting art of knives. You were extremely deadly and sent to Giedi Prime to assassinate the Baron. Sadly for you, you get intercepted and thrown into prison. With no proof against you however, the only thing they can do is put you in the arena. And it so happens that Feyd-Rautha was going to make a spectacle out of you. He's impressed with your fighting, and the both of you end up giving each other a near-death blow. He is intrigued and decides not to kill you. Basically enemies to lovers with a lot of trust issues, plotting, murder, death, etc.

🌸 Duncan Idaho x 'Assassin'!Reader You work for the Harkonnen, not by choice however. They killed your parents when you were younger and are now tasked to help assassinate the Atreides family and their subordinates. You fail to kill Duncan Idaho, who lets you live, and are reprimanded by Rabban. You only have one more chance to prove your worth to them...

Slow burn somewhat, where reader has to go through a lot of struggling, both with herself as with Duncan's distrust of her. Paul has foreseen things however and is the red thread that keeps you sane. Enemies to lovers.

🌸 Duncan Idaho x Atreides!Reader Your coming of age party turns out to leave you wanting more. Drunk shenanigans, misused words and intentions that weren't read properly. Both you and Duncan are a bit stupid sometimes. Yet every one around you seems to know what's going on.

- Ruggie was doing his usual shenanigans, probably running errands for Leona, when he found you curled up by a tree in the courtyard

- At first he was hesitant to approach you. Maybe you were upset, maybe you were just trying to rest, maybe you hurt yourself

- When he did approach you he noticed that you were upset right off the bat

- Instead of immediately asking questions, he decided to sit by you instead, wrapping an arm around you, but only if you gave him permission to

- He waited until you were ready to explain what happened, and when you did he was upset for you

- He knows what loss is like, his life growing up in the Savannah wasn’t easy, and it was always a fear that sat in the back of his mind

- He isn’t exactly the best person at comforting, but he does his best

- He lets you lay on him, use him as support to lay on while he tells you it’s gonna be okay

- He won’t downplay it or pretend like nothings happened, in fact he’ll probably directly address it

- He’ll use the reality of what’s happening to try and calm you down. Yes it is happening, but there’s nothing either of you can do about it and while it takes time to heal, the world doesn’t stop moving

- He’ll give you all the comfort you want, and when you feel a bit better, he’ll offer to spend more time with you and go do something, like stealing food from the cafeteria

- He’s there for you when you need him, anything you want and he’ll be running to get it, and while his approach at comforting is a bit straight forward, he’s still doing his best and wants you to be okay

Ace

- Ace isn’t really the best at comforting

- He’s more of the teasing type, so when it suddenly comes to such a serious situation, he’s not exactly sure what to do

- He’s noticed that something’s wrong, the way you’ve been so distant lately

- You seem so tired and upset, barley having the energy for school let alone his nagging

- He does eventually ask you what’s wrong, still teasing but you can tell through the act that he’s genuinely concerned for you

- When you tell him, he’s not exactly sure what to do

- Like we said before, he’s not the best at comforting, he gives a few awkward “I’m sorry”s and “that’s terrible”s

- While he isn’t good with his words, he shows that he wants to support you through his actions

- He’ll buy you a snack or two, invite you to his basketball practice, or suggest you two go do something fun as a way to distract you

- Distraction is his go to, he just wants to make you feel better

- It doesn’t have to be anything big either, it can be hanging out and putting on a show to get your mind off it

- If you do end up getting worse, starting to cry, he will comfort you

- He’ll hold you and run his fingers through your hair while telling you that everything will be okay

- It’s a bit awkward, but he really does put in his best effort

- He may not be perfect when it comes to comforting you, but he’ll always be there for you in different ways, even if one of those ways is getting in trouble with Riddle because you broke a few rules

#me when im the only person on the bus wearing a mask: i should make a furry plaguesona #its hard to explain bc. most of the time i try NOT to give my characters a 'strong' theme like making their whole design around #one thing like apples or even broad stuff like baking or cottagecore.. idk if its partly for flexibility or because i cant imagine them #making it their whole personality. not bc i find it cringe or overblown but more like ive learned to associate design with character depth #i had a cutesy uwu persona for most of highschool because i thought it would make me more. likeable? easy to remember? since #memorable character designs are easy to recognize. and one way of doing that is simplifying it with a theme or symbol so you form an #association. but since im a real person its exhausting keeping up that appearance all the time and denying myself things when they dont #fit my 'aesthetic' or 'theme.' i think ive grown past that bc i just collect stuff because i think it looks cool and dont let myself dwell #on how it might 'fit' with my image. but i cant help feeling bad doing it to my own characters bc it feels like im making them too one #dimensional. despite knowing that theyre not real and design alone doesnt reflect depth i cant help feeling like its wrong #despite that i love seeing motifs because it feels like it reflects the characters soul and paradoxically gives them depth. it makes them #interesting to look at too and honestly its pretty fun combining things that fall under a similar category when designing #i struggle find a balance between those two things #actually this reminds me of noelles christmas theme.. i dont remember her saying anything abt liking christmas despite a lot of #her design and character tying back to it. it makes me wonder if she would have feelings about that or doesnt think abt it too hard #or if its like a matching family shirts situation and shes just going along with it?? #maybe i should just do whatever i want with my character designs since theyre not real and im thinking abt it too hard #although. this probably has something to do with deep seated identity issues huh #yapping #oc talk #oc

oh i also talked a lot about fire emblem today. specifically whether i was planning to buy Engage or not. verdict is: Probably, considering reviews say the tactics gameplay is really rich & that's like 80% of why i enjoy playing fire emblem. so yes i am not a fan of the character designs. but i will probably buy it. at some point.

i went to gamestop after work to see if i could find it but didnt see it and INSTEAD i saw 2 games for relatively cheap. so i got those instead.

Anyway, Payday 2 is a fun game. Haven't played it in a long time, but pretty sure I can still solo almost any normal mission on overkill (as opposed to stuff like the White House which is actually hard... it's really just the last room where you're pinned from so many sides by heavy fire)

What a fun silly game where you can just turn off your brain and let your hands make big time cash while mowing down an endless tide of cops... it's like Vermintide, cop edition

#I mean it came out before either of the vermintides did; it's just a funny image to me #also I'll be blunt; I like it a whole lot better than vermintide (which I do like) or left 4 dead (which... eh) #cause I just like how objective focused it is #it's not just move from point a to point b maybe defending a point or pulling some levers #it's you go in to a map that's usually got more vertical depth rather than horizontal #and then you do something like have a blimp drop you parts to a drill to open a hole in the vault in the floor #and instead of bosses you just have some really fun elite enemy designs #like I really like bulldozers so much better than rat ogres cause one is just a bullet sponge #and the other is also a bullet sponge... unless you shoot their visor off and hit their face #so they just take strategy to deal with; and I love whipping out my car getting up in their face and taking them down in like 3 shots #plus the skills are a lot more fun to me; you really get to mix and match and make fun builds #be able to do stuff like shout teammates up; or have body shots count as headshots; or have your emc jammer hijack turrets #love that game; so much fun; would love to teach more people how to play it cause it really is honestly an easy and fun game #(so long as you keep to overkill; one down... I want to get good enough; but I probably never will pull that off) #(I want to get all the achievements; I have 807/1328; and they've just been adding more; I used to be closer) #(but I kind of doubt I'll ever manage that)
