Interview: Jared Padalecki on Walker Season 4, The Show’s Future & More

KSITETV’S CRAIG BYRNE: What can you tease about The Jackal, particularly in relation to his history with certain characters?

JARED PADALECKI: The Jackal is a serial killer who haunted then-Ranger James and Ranger Walker five years prior when they were partners, and before Ranger James became Captain James. The Jackal, and his choice of kills and the victims he left behind, really tortured and tormented James and he took it personally. We were never able to solve it, and the Jackal;s case went cold, and we have kind of assumed he had died or stopped or something. And then, as we found out during James’s wedding of all times, someone with a similar M.O. to the Jackal surfaced, and because of how dark it sent James five years prior, Trey and Walker decide to look into it low-key with Detective Luna from Corpus Christi, who Walker and James had worked with back in the day.

We find out in Season 4 that sure enough, the Jackal is back, And so, Walker finds himself stuck in a position. We’ve learned in the first three seasons that keeping secrets among Rangers is not a great idea, but Walker thinks he’s doing what’s best for James. He doesn’t want to him spiraling. James just went on his honeymoon, and he’s married, and he’s going well. Maybe it’s nothing. Maybe this is a coincidence. But we soon seem to settle that it is the original Jackal, and the Jackal is back. Walker takes it on himself to save James from that same torment that he went through five years ago., but the question is how much can Walker take on on James’ behalf, without falling prey to the same feelings himself?

Twitter made me ask you this: Is there any chance that The Jacckal might be played by an actor that you’ve referred to as “Jackles” before?

[LAUGHS] No. All But that’s a great question!

The readers of KSiteTV loved Walker Independence, and it’s great that hopefully we’ll be seeing more of Justin Johnson Cortez as Detective Luna. Is there any chance we might see more people from the show in new roles in the present day, or maybe another Hoyt flashback?

JARED: Let’s say yes. We will be seeing some of our our Windy family. We loved the show as well.

And is there any chance we’ll see those classic characters again?

The answer, again, is yes.

Jensen [Ackles] and I used to have something funny during Supernatural. We did several seasons with 23 episodes, and we likened it to sports analogies. We’d be like “you know, if you’re going to shoot 23 three pointers during a game, you’re not going to make ’em all. If you’re gonna drive the lane 23 times, or go to bat 23 times, then you’re gonna put some air balls. You’re gonna strike out sometimes. But with 13 episodes, they’re all knockouts. They’re all home runs.

We didn’t waste any time this year [on Walker]. We have 13 episodes to make an amazing season of television. I’m on set right now shooting the finale, and I can say with confidence that this is our strongest season.

Are you feeling good about the possibility of a fifth season?

I am. I don’t know… I mean, even during Supernatural’s last season, something can always happen. There can be a strike. There can be COVID. There can be a merger. There can be something.

My career for the last 25 years has been based around not really knowing what’s going to happen. You know, “is Gilmore Girls gonna go? Am I going to get an option to do it again? Oh, now it’s CW instead of Warner Brothers. Oh, now we have a new showrunner. Oh, now we have another showrunner! Now we’re changing nights. Now there’s COVID. Now there’s a strike.” [Last year’s strike] was the second strike I had been through in my career. So, all I can speak to is the quality of work we’re putting out, and there’s nothing I could change.

I will say that I have no reason to think that we we will not carry on. I intend to do the show for another 10 years, so hopefully the powers that be feel the same way. I know our cast and crew all hope for the same. We’re willing and able. Our writers are incredible, with the stories they come up with and the speed with which they can come up with great storylines and great arcs for each and every character… and our crew that makes it… if I was a network, then I would want this show to go as long as everybody who’s making the show would go.

I couldn’t be more proud of the work that we’re putting out there. I think we kind of stand alone, as far as new scripted hour-longs out there. We’re a great combination of heart and action, and trying to mimic reality as best as possible, which I think is needed and necessary. I’ve certainly heard from fans on the street and via social media and whatnot, how much they appreciate it and enjoy it. I’m very optimistic.

How are things with Cordell and Geri as we get into Season 4?

They’ve had five months together since Larry and Kelly’s wedding, snd things have been going well. Things have kind of cooled off; the Jackal’s trail went cold, and so maybe it was not a big deal. They’ve kind of been enjoying the summer with August and Stella and Bonham and Abeline, and they’ve had some time together.

There’s been work for Cordell and for Geri, obviously, but they’re on the same page. They’re living together, and they’re enjoying each other’s company, and they found a place.

Obviously, they both went through some hardships in their prior relationships. Luckily, I think with a lot of great relationships, when they become romantic, they start as friendships. Because Geri and Cordell started as a platonic relationship for many years, they’ve seen each other as friends, and they kind of know who each other’s hearts are. I think they’re enjoying that time and chance to breathe together, and just be with each other.

Is it hard for Cordell that Stella and August are both growing up, with Stella already off to school and August approaching senior year?

It’s very, very hard, and I think you’re more prescient than maybe you even realize; we kind get into that in Episode 2, and as the season goes on, of what it’s like to be to be preparing to be an empty nester, especially without your spouse. So we certainly do see that, and again, going back to what I said earlier about Walker’s storylines imitating life as best as we can, we certainly do see Walker going through that very real [situation].

At work, he is this big Texas Ranger who gets to go in and save the day and all as well, and then at home, he wants to be a Dad, but the clock is ticking. One of his kids is already gone, and the second is a senior in high school, and presumably soon to be spreading his wings. So what does that look like and feel like for this big tough dude?

Will we get to see Walker’s reaction to the situation that Stella got into at the end of last season?

Oh, yeah. And that storyline doesn’t stop, because it’s not all over. Obviously, months have passed and there have been investigations and there is conclusion of sorts, but as with most things in life, it brings about a whole new set of problems that we will deal with through the entire season.

Why should people check out the season premiere on Wednesday night?

I think a lot of us, myself included, have been dying to see what the whole Walker clan is up to. Not with the Walker clan with with the last name Walker. And we get a great catch up with a friend we haven’t talked to in a while. We have action. We have comedy, we have drama… but also, it feels like a dear friend that I haven’t caught up with in way too long, and I get all the ins and outs of what’s been going on their lives over the last period of time

Whew. I'm not gonna lie to y'all, this took forever. My goal with this was to recreate my previous Caryl compilation with 1.) all scenes intact, not missing anything and 2.) much better quality. I ran into many issues that I won't bore you with, but in summary - almost everything here is completely lossless from the original files, aside from S10, which I unfortunately had to reencode to fix a few issues I could not solve no matter how much I fiddled with it. However, it is still much better quality than the previous file I had up! These also have 6CH audio, which means that if you make fan videos and use something like Vegas Pro, you will be able to isolate the spoken audio from the music/random background noises and have better, cleaner voiceovers!

All of the seasons add up to about 123 GB, so I'm sorry that these will take up quite a bit more space than before, but the improved quality hopefully makes up for that! These are not perfect, so please forgive any little framerate bugs or very slight (hopefully) issues with video/audio syncing. I'm aware that the audio for S10 is a bit behind, but hopefully not to an extent that ruins anything - that season gave me quite a hard time, and I'm not really sure how to get it just right. It bothers the hell out of me, so I'm sorry, but I did my best. Otherwise, any issues should be pretty minor, but let me know if you run into anything major.

Part 4: The New Team

The first moment I said “This is bad” at Miraculous Ladybug...the first moment I realized this was going downhill – was when they introduced …Sighs, Rena Rouge.

(To be fair, it started with Lila and her weird necklace but that could have just been fixed easily)

I knew the moment Rena came that this was gonna get bad. I felt it in my bones that THIS was the sign of something insidious and awful boiling in the back of the show. This character marks the beginning of everything downhill in the show - it’s a glaring reminder of how awful the writing in this show is.

Don’t get me wrong I love Alya. I love the character design of Rena and I don’t think that - in a vacuum - her existing is bad. But her appearance signified that something far worse happened behind the scenes.

They were trying to add more heroes.

As I’ve stated in Part 2, where we talk about the Love Square, there is a very delicate balance between Chat and Ladybug’s dynamic. And throughout Season 1, which is meant to be the introduction to the series, we are given no indication that it will focus on anything else. There was more than enough drama with just those two superheroes to last you a very solid arc. But that arc never got developed neither as forefront, nor backstage, as far as seasons 1-3 is concerned.

Again, because the writers are idiots, who believe that developing the story might lead the Love Square to be concluded, which means having the creativity to develop it beyond what the 1 minute trailer told them to do.

So? What do we do? How do we develop this story further, without bringing in the complexities of its own premise?

Easy, you add useless heroes and McGuffins to sell more toys. They add nothing in terms of narrative cohesion, character development, or character relationships.

Like, Season 2 was 25 episodes long. And in those 25 episodes, it introduced a grand total of 3 potential superheroes. Of what are now

11 SUPERHEROES.

By the end of Season 2, a little less than halfway through the currently aired episodes in the USA, we had…3/11 of the entire team.

A team, by the way, that slowly took the emphasis away from what we were even watching this show, to begin with: The Love Square. Ladybug and Chat.

They were the core of the story. And the blatant addition of a new team, proved to me nothing more than a desperate attempt to distance themselves from it. For what reason? Either a lack of confidence in developing their main characters, or plain incompetence to detect what your show even is about.

As I stated in Part 3, in regard of theme, there’s nothing of the sorts connecting ANY of these superheroes together.

The new heroes have different powers – with absurd power balances.

The most powerful superheroes are supposed to be Cht and Laadybug, but I would argue that time travel is a biiiiit more powerful. Like, Garbiel could very easily time travel to save Emily or steal the miraculous before they're given to Chat and Ladybug. But sure. Whatever.

In regards of theme.

Chat and Ladybug have good and bad luck symbols as their animal counterparts. Then there’s Rena, the Fox; Carapace, the turtle; Hawkmoth, the moth; Queen Bee the bee…?? I’m not following that decision at all. If someone does, please do enlighten me.

And then there’s the newest superheroes, introduced in Season 4, and still being currently introduced…

The theme is the Chinese zodiac, but that’s only (checks notes) Excuse me, Paris? Uhm, yeah, Paris. So in Paris they have the Chinese zodiac, but in the USA and Beijin they have completely different powers not tied to the miraculous. And, I get it, you want new merch. Fine, all magical girls are thinly veiled ads for kid’s toys (I will buy the sailor moon blush one day, or so help me god) But, should you at least – try to make it make sense-

New superheroes or new powers should all connect to your theme.

Sailor Moon has planets, so introducing new Sailor Scouts it’s as easy as getting new moons, or suns in the galaxy. Something I find really cute is that Sailor Chibimoon has subordinates CereCere, VesVes, PallaPalla and JunJun. These were the asteroids once thought to be new planets in the Solar System before we knew of the AsteroidBelt and realized they were little rocks.

Mermaid Melody introduced new mermaids through the seven seas. There were only a finite amount of them. But even so, the only way to introduce Seira was through the death of Sara.

And Tokyo Mew Mew’s endangered animals allowed us to have Mew Ringo and (we don’t talk about brunononono, we don’t talk about brunooooo) Mew Berry.

Even Kamichama Karin WHICH I HATE so it goes to show how badly MLB messed it up – has a theme (sort of). It fumbles it extremely badly. Insulting to a degree how bad it does it…BUT IT DOES IT.

It’s greek gods. That’s it. You may have a new power, a new transformation or a new characters but you bet your ass it’ll be a Greek god. It may have no connection to the character’s personality or relationship to each other, but hey. At least it stays consistent on its terrible use of Greek Gods as nothing more than aesthetic.

So, your characters have no narrative weight behind it to justify why they’re here. You have no actual theme to tie all 19 of your superheroes (HOLY FUCK THAT’S A LOT OF THEM) aside from…animals? I guess.

(I swear to god PreCure puts more thought into their themes than this)

But at least, you would guess, your new heroes show interesting dynamics with each other that allow you to understand better either Chat, Ladybug, or each other?

No.

The team is bad.

They ditched the “Magical Girl” formula and decided to go for a bit of a “Super Seitan” feeling. I mean, Power Rangers type of show. More gender neutral, more focused on the villain of the week, and an emphasis on a big team.

Just. A bit of a problem.

But they did this, so into the show that we ALREADY had a sense of their character as a side character, so bringing them to the spotlight was uncomfortable.

Like suddenly making Molly a sailor scout or giving Tomoyo clow cards in the middle of the second season.

That’s not their purpose in the story.

And they’re introduced so haphazardly that there’s hardly any time for them to hang out with each other.

Rena first appears in episode 37, Carapace in episode 44, and Queen Bee in episode 49.

AND NONE OF THESE CHARACTERS INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER.

Not until Mayura. Which is episode 52, which just akumatizes them or gets them out of the way one way or another. Meaning, they do absolutely nothing for the plot, bring nothing to the table, and makes you wonder why even waste air time bringing on-screen characters that do not matter.

In any other show, yes. The characters slowly leaving the protagonist alone because they get trapped, killed or maimed is a good way to up the stakes of the finale.

Here’s the thing, though. I care about them. And they care for each other. They know they’re not losing just a teammate, they’re losing a friend.

I cried like a baby when Makoto died and Usagi only recognized her rose earring – because I love Makoto to death. I cried when Rei sacrificed herself to save Usagi, because I knew how much they bickered. I was upset when Mint and Zakuro fought, because I knew how much Mint idolized Zakuro.

Their failure meant something to the each other. Aside simply, “we lost manpower”. Because these people were, before superheroes, before their later egos – they were friends.

HOWEVER. This does not happen in MLB. Since they don’t GET to keep the kwamis, they don’t get to participate in every episode. We never get episodes focused on how they interact with one another. Which means there’s no sense of a “team”. Which makes you wonder why they’re even considered a “team”.

This is such a horrible decision it genuinely makes me wonder if these people KNOW how to create ANY story !!!

I feel like I keep comparing MLB to many decent and genuinely good magical girls animes. Which feels unfair, EVEN THO IT ISNT, because these are iconic anime’s that have left a print in media

So fine, let’s get this show to a level you all can understand how bad it is

DC superhero girls. And it’s GOOD, check it out if you can. It’s something to turn on and enjoy, with little overarching plot.

But get this, the entire focus is to watch the team girls Interact. A lot of the comedy comes from watching these girls having fun and watching them come to terms with their own superpowers. Watching them get in trouble as they hide their identity, and how they bounce from one another. Who helps who, who are besties, who kinda hate each other, who brings them together and who keeps them strong.

I especially love Barbara and Harley's dynamic, as well as Kitana and Wonderwoman's friendship. The episodes that focus on either of them make me really happy. And even if there's little overarching plot, because I know their situation, I wanna see them happy and have fun.

But because they all have to hide in MLB, you don’t see something like this. Which, btw, THIS is the foundation of both Magical girl GROUPS and Seitan. And I would argue you would get more leeway abt secret identities to one another in MagicalGirls that in Seitan. Seitan’s bread and butter IS team dynamics. The fact that we don’t know how two superheroes that ladybug and chat aren’t would behave around each other is an INSULT to the genre.

And to be fair, they could still keep their identities secret. Just. Have them interact every single episodes, without the need of Ladybug or Chat doing a 10 minute break to give them their Kwamis. It would have been fun to see Queen Bee chat with Ladybug, maybe hate Chat and fight with him to get Ladybug’s attention. Maybe, have Viper and Carapace make music references and vibing in the background. Have Ryuko and Queen Bee bicker. Have Rena and Chat make jokes at Queen Bee’s expense.

You could have amazing drama out of the team trying to find each other’s identities, but having Ladybug threaten them to take away their miraculous (MAYBE she’s paranoid about it since the events of Chat Blanc let her traumatized and will take away miraculous from them). Hell, maybe she took away Chloe’s miraculous not because “she’s unfit” but because she spilled the beans. And Chloe’s resentment is not just from losing her great title, but losing the first true friends she had.

And it would make the fact that Marinette is allowed to CHOOSE her teammate…a bit more bearable. Because honestly, THAT’S a terrible concept.

Most teams DONT get to chose who their partners are, and that’s what makes it amazing.

Because it’s a bunch of people who are forced to be together, slowly learning to open up and depend on one another. Which creates amazing and profound bonds that one originally wasn’t expecting.

Take for example Usagi. She didn’t CHOOSE her team. Instead, she found it. They found her. While Ami and Makoto are kind to her, she’s always butting heads with Rei, and playfully competing with Minako. They don’t all coddle her, or think she’s amazing. They see her as a friend. A crybaby, clumsy but kind-hearted friend who will help them out.

Tokyo Mew Mew has the same. Ichigo isn’t in perfect terms with Mint and they butt heads. Zakuro is a loner that isn’t integrated fully even in later episodes. But they’re a team. They work together.

The fact that Marinette gets to pick, creates issues like…Queen Bee.

Which.

Leads me.

To Chloe.

A God, Chloe.

Gonna go by character I guess

Kendall- Kendall has always been a favourite of mine, I have liked him less this season, that’s not me saying he’s been OC or anything, I just think it’s his natural progression now he hasn’t got the moral of high ground over his father. He is becoming his father, he is the epitome of “the cycle” some people think Shiv is most like Logan, some even think Roman is, but to me it’s Kendall, and always has been, and it’s even more evident this season. When Ewan said that he and Logan had a meagreness about them, but the the difference between them is that Ewan tries to be moral, whereas at some point Logan stopped trying. Meaning that once upon a time Logan was a better man, which I think can be somewhat backed up by Connor the eldest being somewhat softer then the rest, perhaps Logan was not as brutal with him, if somewhat absent because of his obsession with his career (remind you of anyone) and then 15-25 odd years later his youngest son is physically beaten by him. I think when Ewan made that “he stopped trying” statement about Logan, the audience was supposed to think about Kendall. Despite his faults Kendall has shown genuine empathy multiple times throughout first 3 seasons and yet in season 4 he grows more and more cold as he literally tries to become his father. So the natural conclusion to this is that he becomes CEO but he is deeply unhappy and his soul is basically ruined and his whole family inevitably hating him. That would be a sad ending for Kendall fans, but it’s honestly hard to imagine another one for him, other then perhaps suicide, which I think is a possibility. So out of those to options I’d guess I’ll say CEO? I don’t know, the other potential CEO that I think could happen is maybe Tom, which would not great for him in the long run either but ultimately not as thematically tragic.

Roman- I honestly have no idea what Roman’s end game could be, I’m not even sure what I would want for him, that probably has something to do with the fact that he has never been one of my favourites, yet I do feel empathy for his character, Logan abused all his children, yet Roman was the only one he physically abused, to be singled out like that must be traumatising. I think he is slightly more likely to get a somewhat happier ending then Kendall (idk why I just feel it in my waters) and yeah he’s not my favourite but I don’t hate him, so I’ll be fine with him getting a neutral ending, perhaps working at Waystar (not CEO) and befriending Gerri once again?

Shiv: I am 99% sure that Shiv will not be CEO “American” or otherwise, I think pretty much all the other mains (aside from Connor) have more of a chance becoming CEO. This is not because I’m secretly a internal misogynist, neither do I think she will not become CEO because of her “Lack of experience” No the reason I think she has no chance is because of how the last episode ended Lucas telling her he can make the “American CEO work” was basically a neon sign saying “Matsson may be able to get an American CEO to work but it sure as fuck won’t be Shiv” that’s just how narrative convention works. Matsson is shady as fuck and it’s been kind of obvious that he’s been playing Shiv the whole time, she is aware of this and she has been playing him too, but she is only aware to an extent because when her mind is so close to the prize, I think she gets a little carried away. It fluctuates but at the moment Shiv is my second favourite character, and what I want for her professionally is what I’ve wanted for her since I watched season 2 and that’s to go back into politics. Connor has always been a bit of a scrounger (I love him though) and Ken and Roman of course have always been in the family business. Shiv was the only one to make a career for herself (yes she had a huge amount of privilege to help her build that career) but still she had a career that was hers not her fathers, not only that but she was a democrat, while her father has a hugely intimidating and influential presence in the conservative landscape, I never see anyone talk about how brave that was (even if it was somewhat to spite him lol) and yet after years of apparent resistance Logan managed to reel her back in, and we saw she was as desperate for his approval as her brothers were. The scene where Logan persuaded her to take her picture with Menken is one of the most devastating in the show imo, she was so reluctant but she did so for a promise of Waystar and Logan’s approval. She clearly had some passion for working in politics and she appeared to enjoy her job. This hope for her is fruitless though because it is the last episode of the last season so in terms of profession, my hope for Shiv would be that she ends up at Pierce, or perhaps goes into business with Roman (could they maybe work better together without Kendall, maybe it would be a disaster idk) I think there is more of a chance that Shiv gets out then there is for her brothers (she actually knows there is life outside of Waystar from 10+ years of a different career) also as she is my favourite of the siblings she is the one I want to escape the most, as I think working at Waystar (living in the haunted house) will end in misery for any of the siblings and I do want Shiv to be somewhat happy. In terms of personal I want Tom and Shiv to officially end it (although I think that’s unlikely this point) I’m not even talking from a Tomgreg perspective, Tom and Shiv clearly make each other miserable (I do believe they do love each other though) and I know them being miserable together is part of the appeal for a lot of people (hand in unloveable hand and all) but I would personally like them to put themselves out of their misery for good (honestly it would be better for their child as well) Speaking of the baby, I do not want to speak of it much because it is basically pointless as a plotline as we’ll never actually get to see the thing (unless they flash forward Harry Potter style “Logan Roman Nate Wambsgans you were named after the biggest sicko I’ve ever known”) I am not someone who was dead set against Shiv getting pregnant (in fact I thought it was a real possibility with some of the hints we got in season 3) but upon finding out that Jesse added it in last minute, it only makes me think the whole plotline is rushed and pointless and if the whole point of it is to bring Tom and Shiv back together, then dear god 🙄

Connor and Willa- These two’s married life seems to be going well (Yay I love Conwilla) and I think it is highly unlikely that they will randomly implode in the last episode, if they do, Jesse, I will Annie Wilkes your ass (For legal reasons this is a joke) but as the last episode is going to be very Waystar centric, Conwilla will probably be minimal, my main hope for them in the final is they get more screen time then I expect and that I am presently surprised, and that they are happy. Career wise it would be nice to hear how Willa’s playwriting is going, and I honestly don’t have a preference whether Connor is going to remain in politics or go back to “ranching” whatever tickles his pickle. What I would like for Connor though is a little, just smidge of affection from the sibs. GIVE US A SIBLING HUG WITH ALL 4 SIBLINGS YOU COWARDS! I know that the sibs care for Connor in their own way, but he doesn’t (he literally said no one loves him and none of them bothered correct him) Not to bring up the Tomshiv babby again but I can’t believe Matsson heard about it before brodad 🤮 the injustice. Please let at least one of the sibs have sweet moment with him. Please 🙏

Tom and Greg- Saving the best till last baby! I do genuinely want the gay art gallery date (real ones know) it is possible if somewhat unlikely. Other then that I do not expect Tomgreg to go canon but I would like them to have a decent amount of screen time (like proportionally the same as episode 8 which would be more screen time then episode 8 because episode 10 is 1/3 longer then episode 8, if I’m making sense) dream would be to have proportionally the same amount of screen time as episode 1 but that is unrealistic (episode 1 felt about 40% lmao). I would obviously like them to end on good terms, and I want them to be working together! I think Tom is a genuine possibility for “American CEO” he has experience, and Lukas may just do it to fuck with the Roy siblings. Matsson seems to genuinely like Greg but even he wouldn’t make someone like Greg CEO, under qualified is an understatement, the markets would freak, but maybe he would settle for Tom instead, maybe Greg persuades Matsson to name Tom (that would be the dream) I do think being CEO of Waystar inevitably leads to misery for anyone who becomes it (to quote Gerri “the job that makes your brain explode”) but like I said it’s not as tragic with Tom, because he won’t have the corpse of his abusive dead father breathing down his neck. Ultimately I would like Tom and Greg to be somewhat ok and working together and remain besties, wouldn’t mind Tom becoming CEO but idrc. If I’m being realistic I think Tom could end things in a really bad place unemployed? Publicly shamed? Getting arrested for cruises?? Lmao the last one is unlikely but not impossible, but I don’t want any of those things to happen, because he’s my favourite character and I don’t want him to be completely miserable, but I can deal with somewhat miserable, he kind of deserves it. With Greg I think he is the most likely out of the main characters to end up in a good place career wise (although again not CEO lmao) but it means nothing to me if he is in a good place career wise but estranged from Tom, so yeah Tomgreg to remain besties is really what I want for them the most (cheesy I know) a little bit of homoeroticism wouldn’t hurt either but I refuse to get my hopes up.

It just occurred to me while writing this that I said I wouldn’t mind if Tom became CEO but that I also said if Kendall doesn’t become CEO he’ll die! That is perhaps a bit extreme. But what I’m saying is that I think that out of all the characters Kendall is the most doomed by the narrative and will have a tragic ending no matter what, and hoping that he doesn’t his somewhat pointless, the only good thing that I can bring myself to hope for Kendall, is that his relationship with his siblings isn’t completely destroyed by the end of the series and that they are still on speaking terms.

A/N: it was hard for me to even imagine having that smiley beautiful man be a enemy (besides the whole downfall with his last ex but) to anyone but I’m always down for a challenge! Also it’s still spooky season for me until nov. 25th around these parts so ofc that was added here. after watching the best episode of the season so far tonight, I’m more inspired to write this little thing! There’s never enough JR in these episodes!

“Wanna hear a scary story?” JR grunted from his spot, lounging in front of one of the many sofa’s in Keisha’s house.

A roll of your eyes was instant, you couldn’t help it as the cocoa skinned boy tried to keep this event going.

You weren’t even sure who’s idea this was, Halloween was still at least two weeks away but if there was any time to party, everybody was linking up. It so happened to be at Keisha’s house, which was usually one of the three options, off campus since her dad ventured off to a weekend getaway that she never seemed to want to partake in and honestly…you were 50% ready to back out.

“Not uh,” Simone sassed you on FaceTime, “you’ve been flaking on us to do whatever it is the last two times. Your ass is coming, even if I have to drag you and you know I’ll do it.”

Scoffing you stepped back into frame after digging in your wardrobe for some loungewear, “yeah, I’m only flaking because I need to keep these grades up after getting C’s on those last two pop quizzes in PSYCH.”

“Yet…weren’t you and Nate out at the dollar store or was it homegoods…the other day?”

Twisting your lips you glanced off to the side making Simone laugh at your expression.

She got you there, you couldn’t say a damn thing about it, and your best friend knew it.

“Whatever,” you huffed wrapping your frame in your Sherpa before you plopped down at your desk, “who’s gonna be there?”

“Does it matter?”

A deadpanned look was your face as you halted reaching for a gel pen, “you know it does because I might be down to catch my first charge with you know who.”

Simone laughed, “girl! I still can’t believe you dislike JR…it just doesn’t make sense. I mean I get it but y’all just need to get up underneath each other and call it a day.”

Gagging you held onto your neck mockingly, “I rather be buried alive with nothing but Shawn mendes wailing in my ears on repeat.”

“Oh, not Shawn mendes.”

“It’s just y/n? I thought someone was being strangled.” You heard Lando comment, his head brushing against Simone’s as he peered at her screen.

Waving at the new addition to the friend group you breathed out a small laugh, “thanks for your concern! Simone, if that thing is there you can count me out.”

“I mean ask yourself this question, why wouldn’t JR be there? He’s our friend?”

Pressing your chin into the palm of your hand you placed a sweet smile on your lips, “Really? I thought he that shall not be named would be condemned by a priest already.”

Lando shared a snort with Simone, the two mirroring a look that you didn’t particularly like.

“It’ll be my duty to keep you two far away from each other, I promise.” Lando spoke after a moment while Simone continued staring at him in surprise.

Letting out a long breath you replied, “I can’t believe I’m about to say this but lando…if I have your word for tomorrow night, then you’ll definitely get points in my friendship book.”

Lando raised his fist, glancing back at Simone who was fighting back a smile, “See? I think your friend likes me better than you now.”

Simone cackled, “good luck trying to keep that promise once JR is lit off that brown.” She snatched her phone back to focus on herself, “glad you decided to come around sis! You could use a night of freedom with your besties…minus one.” She corrected noticing your lips prying apart to argue.

You hated when any of your friends were right and you had a different perspective. Drunk JR was one of the reasons why you didn’t like him and he knew that. He also didn’t like how judgmental it made you seem, since he strongly believed his actions shouldn’t be held against him when he’s under the influence.

So why were you locked in one of Keisha’s extra rooms with this dude you didn’t like? He was lounging on his back, bourbon bottle cradled to his chest as he asked you this question.

It was probably 11:30pm and the music was still thriving, if you stood still long enough you could feel the bass vibrating against your bare feet. However you couldn’t stand still because you did not want to stay in this room with JR any longer. No matter how many knocks on the door and jingling the knob, you were not getting out of this lounge room? Any time soon.

“I’m living a scary story right now being in the same space as you, JR.” You muttered, spinning to press your back against the door.

JR chuckled, “the only jumpscare I see here is you, girl.”

“Excuse me?”

JR held his free hand out, “I’m only saying that ‘cause of that stank ass attitude you spreading around this room. You should be thrilled that you’re here with me, this bottle, and the music at our feet. That’s a good time if you ask me.”

The audacity of this man.

“Like I said, I’m experiencing a scary story right now and it’s getting worse the longer I’m looking at you.” You sent a middle finger to JR who laughed once more, his head lolling before he slowly pushed himself up to rest on his elbow.

And of course, he took a swing, wincing before he tapped against his chest as it slowly went down, his signature necklaces shifting as he did so.

“My mother told me since I was a kid that I should be in a museum…I’m a true work of art and it didn’t take me long to realize it my damn self,” JR was confident, “and some people are late bloomers so I know you’ll come to terms with my good looks soon.”

The wink he sent you made you shake your head.

“You’re unbelievable,” you hissed, “you can have these other girls here fooled and thinking you’re this special, one of a kind dude but I know what you are.”

“And what exactly is that, hm?” JR pressed, “it seems like you got it all figured out; better than I do, so go ahead and say it.”

“You’re an asshole or a asswipe,” you grinned, “I’ll let you pick which one you like best.”

“And you’re a real piece of work, you know that?” His brows were slightly furrowed.

“So I’ve been told.”

JR moved his body so that it was sitting back against the couch. He stared down at the bottle before taking another swing then he placed it to the side.

“…what’s your real issue with me, y/n?” JR breathed as he looked up and over at you through his lengthy lashes, “I think it’s time we just hash it out since we don’t know how long we’re gonna be stuck here for.”

“Don’t you have your phone?” You whined, not wanting to do this as you began massaging the nagging feeling that was beginning to start in between your brows.

JR hiccuped, covering it with his fist before he answered, “yeah…Damon’s got it. Can’t tell you why though. Where’s yours?”

“Dead.” You wiggled it in the air followed by some silence along with a nod of JR’s head.

“So…we doing this or what?” JR asked, “We’re in the same friend group with other mutual friends and we see a lot of each other so I’m taking—mostly everybody’s advice and attempting to get this over with.”

You crossed your arms at your spot from in front of the door, slowly sliding down to rest there.

So JR was talking to other people about you?

For what exactly?

“I think we should take a nap instead, you more so than me,” you mentioned, “and by the time we wake up, we’ll go back to staying out of each other’s way.”

JR blinked, “despite what your preconceptions of me are…I’m not drunk and can hold a decent conversation with you. It’s you that’s giving scared energy.”

Slits were in your eyes as he said this to you.

“Scared?” You repeated as JR met your eyes, followed by raised brows in response, “you cant even handle me.”

JR declared, “if I can handle this bottle all by myself with no chaser…I can most definitely handle your stank behind.”

Breathing out a small laugh you broke eye contact for a moment, knowing JR was probably smirking to himself that he got you to lower your walls for a few.

It was exhausting constantly beefing with someone. Yet you had your reasons and found yourself moving from the door to sit beside JR and snatching the bottle yourself. JR was impressed as you took the bourbon with a much too big of a shot and began coughing once you remembered to breathe.

JR reached out to pat your back as you held onto your neck.

“I forgot I’m not a bourbon girl,” you wheezed making JR laugh at you, reaching with his free hand to put the bottle to the side and out of your reach.

“Took it like a champ.”

“Better believe it,” you deeply inhaled before you got comfortable along the edge of the cushions.

JR cleared his throat, folding his hands in front of him as he thought about his next words carefully.

“I know what my issue with you is,” JR started, “we first met at one of my weak moments and it felt like you were still trying to make me be that all that time. Even when I tried to make a fresh start with you, realizing you were friends with everybody else it still felt like you were putting me beneath you and I’m not beneath anybody. I’m your equal.”

You received that like another shot of bourbon.

So you said, “And when you tried to gain a fresh start with me I was going through my own little moment. I was dismissive—

“And I didn’t possibly think something was going on—we didnt know each other to know that side of each other yet. I also assumed you had this permanent attitude, like you didn’t want to be bothered.” JR filled in, “and we already got one ice queen in the group, didn’t think we had two.”

Lightly laughing you knew what that meant, although JR and Thea seemed to get along quite well with her dating his baby brother. He still jokingly called her so when Thea was in fact being mean.

You added, “…Well you were boasting about your sneaky links recently so that also made me dislike you even more.”

“Why?” JR questioned, “I like to have fun.”

“Sure,” you shrugged, “it’s just irritating not only seeing but hearing about you when I’m trying to get my work done in class.”

JR rubbed at his goatee smiling to himself, “I know I do my thang but who was talking about me in class? Was it a girl named raven?”

A shove to his shoulder made JR’s reflexes slightly delayed as his ego kicked in a bit. He leaned on his fingertips to glance at you, who was shaking your head.

“What? A brotha can’t ask? I like to be organized.”

A look of disgust appeared on your features, “You’re sick!”

“Don’t be jealous baby.”

“Baby?!” You felt your head pushing away from your neck, which made the smile lines on JR’s cheek appear before he busted out laughing.

He carefully reached for your chin trying to push your head back, “relax…we don’t need you walking around here like the hunchback of notre dame, do we?”

Scoffing you plucked JR’s hand from your face.

“Keep your hands to yourself, asswipe. I don’t know where those hands have been.”

That only made the brown-skinned man more annoying as he decided to toss an arm across your shoulders. “I take pride in my hygiene, you don’t got to worry. But I like where they’re now.”

Daring a look to meet his dark pretty eyes with a slight sparkle in them, you met his gaze and you felt like your body was on fire. You would be lying if you said you didn’t think JR was physically attractive. You’ve seen him around on campus before you realized you had similar friends and of course at frat parties but seeing him on the step team, commanding a crowd kinda did something for you…yet the two of you did not mesh due to assumptions on both ends.

“If you think—

You started.

Instantly JR replied, “I don’t.”

Leaving you to be the first to insinuate a kiss that was almost bruising. JR was following your lead, arm still tossed over your shoulder, his fingertips caressing your jawline before resting on your throat as your lips fought against each other’s.

Somehow his body was on top of yours, trying to get as close as you should have been long ago. With his hand on your thigh and your thigh on his waist, he slipped his tongue into your mouth to get more of you. You almost forgot what breathing was like when JR carried his kisses over to your neck, taking in all of you and your scent. He raised up after placing open-mouth kisses against your melanin, taking in the sight of you panting.

He beamed at you, his white teeth shining as he did so. The hand that held onto your thigh slid down it and up your ribbed orange skirt making your breathing hitch.

“Need something else to taste?” You boldly asked, through half lidded eyes.

His pink tongue ran over his bottom lip as he massaged your upper skin, “I got you.”

The music drowned out the actions that took place between you and JR that night, thankfully.

“I’m glad we got to know each other better.” JR chuckled as you lay with your back to him.

Shushing the man over your shoulder, your hand reached out to the plastic bag underneath and through the couch. Sitting up now, you walked over JR, with his Jean jacket draped across your shoulders to peek beside the couch.

Laughing in disbelief, you picked up the bag and plopped down in front of JR who watched you in curiosity.

“What’s that?”

“This is what I was looking for when I came up here.” You wiggled the bag as JR got a glance of what’s in the bag, “Nate accidentally took one of my decoration bags and left it here…so she says.”

JR glanced off to the side with a smirk playing on his lips and he had a feeling you’d eventually catch on (if you haven’t) to their friend’s bright idea. “Show me your haul then.”

You actually bounced in your seat in excitement which JR found cute. His hand slid back to rest on your thigh while you leaned forward, gripping his goatee to place a kiss on his lips suddenly blabbing about the items.

With his cheek resting in the palm of his hand watching you adoringly, JR didn’t take you as a Halloween lover but he didn’t mind a good chase when it comes to you.

thank you for the ask :)) and sorry its late i was gonna answer this at the bus stop yesterday but for once they decided to be on time

7. top 5 bl

man i had to stare at my mdl completed list for a while to decide this, but i'll preface that these top 5 are here both bc i have such a strong emotional connection with them and bc i want to scream about how actually good they are from a rooftop (also not ranked bc thats too hard):

utsukushii kare - don't know else i can make it clear how beloved and special this show is to me. an excellent story across both seasons and the movie with even better mains that are characterised to perfection, develop in the most beautifully human way and are performed brilliantly. and if i think about this show any longer and remember its over i will break so moving on

old fashioned cupcake - it was one thing to give me a bl starring THE og kageyama stage play actor bc those things were my life during the height of my anime phase, but to then have it be this good?? the story is beautiful, the fact they manage to do so much with such little run time amazes me, and to this day it has the most romantic line in any bl that always gives me goosebumps when i watch it. and i dont wanna talk like im that old, im only 25, but as someone who's barely had anything you can call a romantic experience, this show left me with the warmest sense of hope and comfort that beautiful love stories aren't reserved for high schools, and its never too late to find happiness

blueming - i havent rewatched this one in a while, or much at all, but i'll never forget the visceral response i had when i binged it all in one night. i adore the fact that this is just the gentlest story of 2 people falling in love and finding comfort in each other and just how naturally and simply it happens, and i think its portrayal of that specific family dynamic is phenomenal, bc for me at least its as much about that family being in the process of healing as it is about the love story, and the fact they go hand in hand is even better

bad buddy - what else is there to say. for the 12 weeks it aired, i ate, slept and breathed this show. literally did not even think about anything else. and this show has rightly been praised to the moon and back but as well as all that, its always gonna be special for me bc of the people and community i found and shared the watching experience with. what can i say, you just had to have been there, and im so glad i was

the eighth sense - surprisingly this was my last pick and i was debating swapping it for a few others, but it ultimately stays bc of how refreshing and how much of an emotional rollercoaster it was. i haven't ever brought myself to rewatch it, but i can vividly remember how enraptured i was by the sheer amount of tension they managed to create in those initial episodes, and how well they managed to maintain it. and i hope people take note of how much people loved its artful and kinda raw vibe and become inspired to do something similar bc i think it gives great balance to the genre (and i also, clearly, love it, just look at these pics. i promise i do love fun and silly stuff too)

12. most rewatched bl

i was debating putting this on my list but ultimately, while not being my absolute favourite, its my definition of a comfort show and that is my dating sim. idk what it is about the show, but ever since it came out i go back to it at the very least monthly. i think its the fact that when im really craving a good bl, it manages to not only hit all my favourite tropes (unrequited but secretly requited love, reuniting and digging up the past, that initial clash gives me a lil bit of enemies to lovers, plus it has enough fluff to make me all warm and giddy), but it also does them so well, and the story is so perfectly simple and succinct that i feel so content when the whole thing is over. truly the perfect show for when i wanna do nothing and feel happy.

17. best kiss

unsurprising but yes, it still is the bad buddy rooftop kiss. i dare not watch this kiss bc i know if the weakness ever overtakes me i will fall into a void that i will not escape for at least a week. and honestly, while there has been some good competition, idk if she'll ever be beaten, and idk if thats bias talking or just the objective truth, but i encourage all bl's to keep giving it their bests shot

Happy Saturday night/Sunday morning fellow tsc fans! How we all feeling post episode drop? Good? Bad? SHOCKED and APPALLED at the Charlie scene*? Smad about Jack being called a frozen lunatic? Well, may I offer you a plug for Crystal Springs in this trying time?

Crystal Springs? You ask. The thing I see you post about a solid 25% of your time on hellsite?

Yes! Crystal Springs!

Well...alright, I'll bite, you say. What is it?

Crystal Springs is a genfic that I wrote that takes place a year after tsc3, and focuses on our boy Jack Frost, who has THAWED! He's been chilling at the Pole, doing them community service hours, making up with Santa and the other elves, just. Y'know. GETTING BETTER POST-THAW. HE'S HAVING A REDEMPTION ARC! IT'S GREAT! IT'S ALL GREAT!

Except for one itty bitty tiny thing...

His powers seem to be...gone. And you know, this wouldn't be TOO much of a problem if he wasn't tied to the Dome that shelters the entire North Pole and saves them from exposure and also, keeps Elfsburg temperate!

But unfortunately, keeping the Dome shipshape is one of the ah, not so perky perks of Jack's job. And when his powers stop working...the Dome starts melting, warming up the North Pole and letting the magic leak out. And if the magic leaks out??? It'll spread way too fast, way too hot, and potentially jeopardize not only the magical populous of the world, but the regular populous, too! Because not only does the Dome keep them safe and temperate, it also doles out the magic in proper quantities so as not to overwhelm the magic that coats the entire globe!

And on TOP of that, BECAUSE the Dome melting is starting--a process known as the Deliquesce--everyone is beginning to think that maybe Jack's going back to his old ways...ruh-oh raggy!

So what to do, what to do? Well, after finally admitting his lack of powers to the Council, there's one thing that may be able to help Jack: the Legate Law.

Santa has his clauses, but the Council? Well, they all have a lil' something known as the Legate Law, in which, should something happen to them or they become unable to do their job or even just retire (yeah tscs series, I did it FIRST! HA!), their Legate steps in to take their place!

Jack's Legate should be good to take over his seasonal duties and fix up the Dome temporarily, if they partially enact the law. They may even be able to help Jack get to the bottom of his power shortage!

There's only one problem.

His Legate is his younger sister, Jacqueline.

Who he hasn't seen or talked in fourteen hundred years.

In fact, the last time they saw each other, he uh. He maybe almost killed her. Maybe. Almost. It was bad. Bad enough to be known as the Day of Darkness in magical history.

But, Jack, realizes, it's time to make amends with the fam. And this seems to be the only way to save the North Pole and all of the magical world. (And Christmas too, I guess).

But when Jacqueline arrives and things take a turn for the worse, the pair realize that if they want to fix this at all, they're gonna have to go home.

Back to Crystal Springs.

(BOOM NAME DROP!)

So off Jack goes to make amends with his parents, meet the younger twin siblings he didn't even KNOW existed, and hopefully get his and Jacqueline's sleet together before the nefarious stranger in the shadows manages to string together a devious plot for some very, very, very old vengeance on the Frosts.

Oh, I didn't mention the mysterious stranger? Well, there is one, and he's stirring up trouble for the entire Frost Fam!

So. In conclusion. Crystal Springs has EVERYTHING.

AND MORE! (Bernard, weird evil man working in the shadows for lord knows WHAT reason, canon characters IN CHARACTER)

But mostly, it has JACK. And if anyone out there is missing their emotional support frozen lunatic, well. I GOTYOU ;)

*we here at SafyreSky Industries are aware of the reasons they did the Charlie scene the way they did in Disney+'s The Santa Clauses. However, we are upset at the way they portrayed him and his wife's relationship. SafyreSky Industries is of the opinion that:

A) Charlie should have TOLD wifey AGES AGO about Scott as Santa AGES AGO and that

B) Had he and wifey had a nice conversation that was drawn out and not, you know, like THAT. Just a bit more mature and heartfelt and communicating their needs to one another, then it would've been LESS anger inducing, and finally

C) Like Charlie being next better and as such, will be going forward in CS Verse canon with Charlie becoming Santa's Legate and after that, the next Santa :)

Aaaaa ok if I don’t get this out my head I’m gonna lose it.

Honest to god all the bitching I’ve heard from so many antis and criticals over a show frankly undeserving of such hostility (hmm, I’m getting deja vu) like holy shit dude it’s so hilarious.

Like…fuck dude, I just…fuck I don’t even know how to explain.

Like, Hazbin Hotel being a tv show means there’s only so much time they can focus on any given thing. 25 minutes an episode. There’s only 8. At least Steven Universe had the luxury of having 24 eps a season or whatever.

Also…hmm, how to put it…

In MLP (yes I know I know I have a point) every episode is slice of life, as in, we don’t see every single individual day of the characters lives.

We have to essentially make assumptions that the characters are really good friends by the end of season 1/beginning of season 2 or else the premise is a waste.

At least MLP FIM had 24 eps a season. (Except season 3)

Hazbin hotel will never have such a luxury.

Thus, in order for the show to really make sense, we have to just kinda…go with it.

We have to assume some kind of character development happened between the episodes we’ve watched. In the background.

I don’t think that’s bad writing.

Viv simply doesn’t have the time to really elaborate fully on every aspect of the show. Tis how television operates I’m afraid. Studios only have so much money they’re willing to pour into a new project, Hazbin Hotel will not last 30+ seasons or whatever like the Simpsons ya get me?

Not like many television shows these days even get that time nowadays anyway.

This is not Viv’s fault. She was only given so many episodes to tell the story she wants to tell. And I think she’s doing a fine enough job.

It’s just some of y’all’s standards are too high.

I just feel like some people were expecting Hazbin to be some grand epic or something when like, this ain’t Dante’s Inferno bitch, get real.

Buuuuut you know what you can do when you want more from a series that can’t give you what you want due to time constraints?

Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.

Season 8: Klinger stops wearing dresses and it immediately sets this whole edifice on the fucking wobble.

Maybe this season more than any set I’ve put together yet I’m aware could give an entirely different impression if I’d picked even just a couple different episodes than I did. As is, I made my selections by asking the following questions: Is it good? Is it interesting? And, Does it make me want to slap it up on the x-ray illuminator, point at it, and yell, “What!!?” If you (an episode) reach two of these criteria, you’re in!

M*A*S*H - Season 8 Recommended sequence

8x04-05 ‘Goodbye To Radar, Parts 1 & 2’ - Although they, curiously, did not, we gotta start here. M*A*S*H has finally figured out how to do a farewell episode for a departing cast member, and it’s for my ridiculous sincere little buddy Radar. 💔 Ohh man, if you wanna talk end of an era!! Gary Burghoff as Corporal O’Reilly has been with this show from when it was a Robert Altman movie, almost just fucking molecularly, he IS M*A*S*H, and it’s only through a neat bit of acting Gary pulls that I was able to find a little bit of peace with it: here at long last, Radar O’Reilly finally feels like he’s grown up. It’s time for him to leave home. But I’m gonna miss him!!

8x06 ‘Period of Adjustment’ - Incredibly, we had this chat, and then the very next episode I watch is this one. LOL. This episode looked me straight in the eye and said “‘I could fix him’ well I could make him worse <3,” and then left my ass in pieces. Just, come here, be here with me. Pull up a patch of floor. We’ve got this one on the light box.

8x09 ‘Mr. and Mrs. Who’ - And now for something completely different: something so familiar. Remember years ago when like half of M*A*S*H episodes were about goofy half-forgotten drunken escapades on R&R interwoven with a sticky little medical problem the doctors are trying to solve under adverse conditions? For one night only, we’re bringing that back! Get your tix.

8x11 ‘Life Time’ - Honk honk! EXPERIMENTATION STATION. Alan Alda co-writes a 25 minute real-time surgical episode with their medical consultant, actual doctor Walter Dishell, M.D. When that little ticking clock face chyron got tossed up in the corner, oh girlie, absolutely. Also notable for BJ fully transporting back to his first season thoughtful sad sweetie register (??) (!), and, since it’s not otherwise a cold episode, Alda coming up with a localized reason for at least him personally to still get to pretend to be cold.

8x15 ‘Yessir, That’s Our Baby’ - A baby is left at the MASH, and every man in camp is immediately like, (tenderly) I AM MOM. Unmissable. Unbelievable. I am torn between laughing, cooing, and the I GUESS!!! guy.

8x23 ‘War Co-Respondent’ - After his very rewarding directorial debut last season, Mike Farrell returns to the chair with a script of his own this time, and it’s a jewel! Witty and referential, from Cole Porter lyrics to how in Charles’s first season his and BJ’s great war was Massachusetts vs. California. And that’s not all Farrell hearkens to in M*A*S*H past: Hawkeye as an incorrigible yet endearing flirt (it’s the shamelessness), and how whenever BJ has struck a Romantic figure, capital R, it’s always been so rooted in his quietness. Mike...!

8x22 ‘Dreams’ - Everyone’s SO COLD and been working for two sleepless days straight, and as it finally eases just enough for them to start covering for each other’s naps, said naps are all strange nightmares about war surgery. That’s right, it’s Alda again (could you tell by the overcoats? and TRAUMA?) and god, he really effectively renders the way dreams can seem kind of banal and then just bend at the wrong angles. Of course my favorite of the season, and your unusual, haunting finale.

time to tuesday

listening: i have been POWERING through twilight mirage. i find the first ~5 eps of any fatt season are the hardest to get through because it's familiarizing yourself with new characters, settings, vibes, etc. but once you pass that point it is fuckin rolling. i'm on episode 12 now. i think my goal is to do twilight mirage and partizan and catch up on palisade in time for that to finish lol. i think it's doable though. most seasons are about a year long. let's say 70 ep of TM and 50 ep of partizan, with rounding, and if i listen to five episodes a week that's 24 weeks, so about halfway through the palisade run, yeah? at that point there will be about 25 episodes of palisade, so another 8 weeks, etc. but i SHOULD be able to catch up in time. we'll see.

i went to a concert this past saturday for the local philarmonic and that SLAMMED. the first two pieces were soloists from local youth concerto competitions and not gonna lie these kids ruled. the first one was 14 and did a saint-saëns violin concerto and made me question everything about all my choices he was so talented. the second one was also really good but it was chopin and he's hit or miss as a composer for me, the soloist was incredible but i just. don't like chopin that much. oops. and then the final piece was dvorak #8 which made me sooo emo and nostalgic because i did that one in orch in undergrad and it rips. so it was really good.

hmm. what other music. this is funny

reading: nothing besides glancing at twilight mirage transcripts if i felt like i missed something and didn't want to scrub back haha

watching: started cowboy bebop with my so!! it's soooo good truly immaculate vibes all around. we watched up to episode 3 so starting with 4....probably tonight i think actually

making: starting a printmaking project! unpacking some shit mentally etc.

i had to set up the block three times total before i finally got the sketch reversed lmao. like i drew it out once, went wait shit i have to mirror the image, traced it onto a piece of paper to transfer it, transferred it the wrong way AGAIN, and finally got it right on the third try. lol. gonna start carving it some time this week, and i need to order a brayer and some ink...

and finally [GIFT WARNING; BOYFRIEND DO NOT READ THIS PART] i FINALLY got the intarsia working for the scarf im making. turns out i was twisting the yarn under the work and not over it so it was like. pinching the actual knit itself. dumb. but it's good now and im gonna start ripping through it :)

started doing pottery again also!!! so stay tuned for more making on that front

misc: i finally went to urgent care last week because i was still not feeling well and wasn't getting any work done because i couldn't focus and i felt dizzy and icky and achey etc and it turns out i had an ear infection! or something like that, something in the ear/nose/throat vibe. so i got put on an antibiotic and im doing much better

experiencing the agonies otherwise but im hanging in there. tuseday again no problem right

I honestly think it would do Watcher a lot of good to hire a professional Social Media Manager and Marketing Manager. They all have a lot riding on this company.

They also need to work on getting actual sponsorship opportunities. We have Pretty Historic, why not reach out to some make up brands to partner with? For Worth a Shot you telling me no alcohol brand would have wanted to slap some branding in there. I know they want so badly to be above BF but they need to realize that if you want to run a corporation and entertainment company you NEED to diversify and sometimes do some more grown up corporate stuff. And you can do that without losing soul and heart.

They’ve also really dropped the ball on the merch for some reason? Like why didn’t Worth a Shot, the newest AYS and TMS get any merch drops? Why release the Camp Watcher shirts WEEKS after the episode?

Also I’d really like to see them actually bring light to the folks behind the scenes. Let me see more TJ, Mark, Brittany, Kate, Katie, etc. Hell they should be on the website with a little profile. Do some social media spots of those who make the magic which would be a big middle finger to Buzzfeed. Which I think is another reason that they need maybe a more seasoned social media person to be honest. Because like…we’re getting memes, jokes about Stranger Things and the Professor’s Death weird TikToks that feel like Shipping fancams.

I think that maybe they should be consulting with maybe the Try Guys who have been running a successful solo company for a while now. Because honestly I think if Watcher doesn’t shape up it might not last a decade.

I agree with a lot of this especially about the merch situation. I don't want to get into my depth of disappointment regarding that because it's a whole other kettle of fish

BUT

I think that the current work on Watcher's socials does effectively speak to an audience and it's deeply necessary to give Watcher a lasting campaign of influence online because Youths are gonna Youth. The Stranger Things thing was a bad look imo but that's beside my point. My issue is that there needs to be balance. Putting someone who is already working their butt off to make their in-jokes happen and succeeding into the position of all-around fan engagement management is going to let a lot of stuff fall through the cracks. The merch issue, the Patreon issue and the lack of perks for higher tiers notwithstanding. All of this stuff sours your relationship with fans and it should be apparent by the slow decline of their patrons since they appeared to have peaked at 4k before dropping again.

I was recently reading a rant from another fan in a private space saying they want to share Watcher stuff with friends but being a bit older, the socials are not for anyone older than 25 to follow. This is not a failing on the part of their social media manager because she's doing what they hired her to do but they need to hire someone to work next to her to do something that diversifies the reach via marketing. And mostly, both people need to be in LA. Their social media game wasn't anywhere as hot as it was when Simone was in LA, I can't even lie. Having someone around who just knows when to pull out their camera and document boosts fan engagement so much, I'm surprised they haven't buckled down to make that a normal thing.

The Try Guys actually had a trypod episode where they interviewed their social media manager. If you can find it and give it a watch, you'll understand very very quickly why marketing is non issue for them and the Try Guys barely have to lift a finger to plan that stuff. It's almost all her direction. It's a lot of work but she has a team as well.

Idk, I think it just aggravates me more because it's become apparent they are doing really well and they're making huge strides better than any company that started the way they did but I don't want them to waste it acting like they need to keep plates spinning with a small team. You've got the resources! Use them!

Titans 4x04

SPOILERS AHEAD

READ AT OWN RISK!!!!

Let's dive in, shall we?

-I can't tell if Dick is in complete denial or he genuinely is scared of everything going on since he's completely out of his element. He's always used to being the guy who can fight villains with his fists, but now he's facing a situation where he can't do that. Hell, even Connor is struggling against this new foe.

-Dick's attitude towards Kori worries me; the vision and the music from the jukebox...These are obvious signs of Kori's destiny and Dick is adamant that they should graze over it, and that it's nothing to worry about. But man, I am WORRIED.

-I just love how the Titans just pick up strays along the way. Sebastian being their newest edition, beside Jinx, but I'm really invested in his story. His interaction with Rachel was interesting. You can see there is a connection there already, even before we discover he is her "brother".

-I'm unsure how I feel about Connor and Jinx, I'm gonna let that one ride out on its own.

-Tim being the ultimate fanboy will always be my favorite thing about him. If I were in his position, I would probably be spitting random facts all the time about heroes too.

-Not us going back to the asylum?! Kori ad Dick are responsible for members of the Organization escaping, especially Mother Mayhem?!?! There are points in this series where I just don't understand how it all makes sense, but this fucking moment threw me to the floor. Are you kidding me? We just connected back to season 1!!!!

-Sebastian's backstory is honestly heartbreaking. There was so much to unpack there that I don't think I really can break it all down, so bare with me. From my understanding, Trigon's heir/child that would fulfill the prophecy was to be a daughter. But then Mother Mayhem had Sebastian, which made him not be the prophetic child Trigon spoke of. So she was no longer relevant to him and eventually found Rachel's mother. But what confuses me is: Did mother Mayhem do something to make Sebastian the chosen one? Did her influence create him to fit into Trigon's prophecy? If someone wants to clarify this for me, that would be great. Or I could just go back and watch the episode again.

-"Super Super Mart" is this the DC version of "Spirit Halloween"? Old buildings turning into Super Super Marts lol.

-Zombies...I didn't think I would be writing this sentence in regards to Titans, but I guess I am. Kori's powers malfunctioning in that moment is very interesting. They were the only thing that worked against Mother Mayhem's powers two episodes ago, but against the zombies, they hardly flinched. What does this mean? Do this have to do with the book and the red moon?

-Oh, oh the fucking children's book. First off, the illustrations were great. Second, the meaning behind the illustrations is worrisome for sure. Kori will die, Sebastian is the chosen one, and the Titans will fall. And this is to happen 8 hours from now. 8 fucking hours!?!?

-Also, again. Titans has some weird obsession with not having accurate ages for these characters. You're gonna tell me Sebastian is 25 years old?!?!?! I'm literally a 26 year old and when the screen said 1997 I had to do a double take to understand another weird age has now entered the chat. No one, and I mean NO ONE, on this planet can convince me that Joseph Morgan can pass for a 25 year old man. There is no way.

-It was great to see Deathstroke again, I hope this isn't that last of him. Even thought he's a zombie I still have a soft spot for that unhinged maniac.

-I'm really curious to see what will happened to Connor. I think he vomited up that serpent because of Slade stabbing him with that dagger. But it makes me question: does Mother Mayhem now have some sort of connection to Connor? or is it simply him being a Super and their weakness to magic?

-The last scene at S.T.A.R. labs really brought it home for me that we are in a The End era. There is no ways around it. It was a 100% a rewrite of Teen Titans and the scene where Robin takes Raven to the special containment are for her 16th birthday. But in this case, Benard leading Rachel and Sebastian into hiding to ride out the red moon. It's all coming together and I'm ready for next week!

What should I watch to catch up on the Pokémon anime in time for the end of Ash’s story? Is it the conclusion of a specific arc or something?

as far as im aware theres nothing specific that you need to know in order to enjoy it other than being somewhat familiar with ash, misty, brock, and team rocket. im sure there will be references to previous seasons/arcs (like all his past pokemon), but i dont think theres anything specific you need to know, since journeys ended cleanly. if you want to be familiar with the end of journeys though, the last two episodes concludes gou's adventure with ash as the two part ways. ash told gou he was going to keep adventuring so he could meet even more pokemon and make more new friends and become a pokemon master.

the only two things id say are probably really important for you to know is that he's the alolan league champion (beat kukui) and pokemon world champion (beat leon) but you probably already know those things. pokeani is such a massive world that i couldnt begin to guess what sort of stuff theyre gonna want to reference in the conclusion of a 25 year old story lol, but it wont be anything that youll be genuinely lost trying to watch it or wont be able to enjoy it. anything i recommended you would really be for the sake of recapping character dynamics or backstories rather than plot, lmk if your interested in that but i dont think itll be necessary to enjoying the finale

expelling my irritation with ST 4 because I need to get it out of my brain (so basically, if you loved the season, probably don’t read this because it will make you mad) - also spoilers for s4, obviously

- first of all, there is absolutely no excuse for this season being nearly 13 hours long in 9 episodes. it could easily have been 8 or 9 hour long episodes and possibly even shorter than that.

- nothing happens in 4x08. nothing. yes, obviously characters do things and have conversations, but really think about where all the characters are when the episode starts and where they all are when it ends, because nothing can justify that taking an hour and 25 minutes (which is longer than some actual feature films); it’s genuinely an hour+ of filler and like maybe 15 minutes of actual content.

- i’ve said it before, but i’ll say it again- the writers have no clue what they are supposed to do with Will as a character because he was not conceived of to play a role as a character, he was conceived of as a plot device and to incite other characters to act. it’s not inherently a bad thing for a character to be a plot device initially, and I don’t even think this is bad at all with how it’s handled in season 1, but if they continue to be a part of your show long term and are presented to the audience as a main character, then it’s important to figure out how to make them something more than a plot device and they have never figured that out for Will.

- listen, it’s not like i specifically want any of the characters i love to die, but this is season 4 and they have had zero guts about killing their main cast. will they do it in season 5? maybe because it’s the last season and they don’t have to worry about people quitting the show. once you figure that out (which if you didn’t figure it out when they revealed Hopper to be alive, then i don’t know what you were watching), it means that the stakes feel unbelievably low, considering what’s supposedly happening. sure, people will die in s4, but it sure as hell isn’t going to be core cast we’ve been following for years.

- which leads me to- HOPPER SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD. The Russia plot line is so unbelievably unnecessary. i’m not going to get into the real world ethical issues i’ve seen people discussing about the filming locations and such because i’ve only seen little bits of it and haven’t looked into what is happening enough to feel like I should platform my opinion, but putting all that aside, this has to be one of the most unnecessarily drawn out plotlines I have ever seen on tv. plus, it makes rewatching season 3 fall emotionally flat at the end because you know Hopper isn’t dead! Hopper’s death & his letter to El were two of the best and emotionally resonant things they had going for them in season 3 and having him alive cuts the legs out from under some of their best work!

- this is a perfect place to add: WE SPEND WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON TOO MANY PLOTLINES THAT DON’T WARRANT IT. Russia, as previously stated, Mike & Will & Jonathan & Argyle (and Suzie), The Basketball jock douche, even some parts of El’s storyline. they. did. not. need. that. much. screen. time. this season would have worked so much better if it had stayed focused on the Vecna plotline as the center (likely needing to incorporate the far flung characters into the actual plot somehow) and anything else that is not in the central Hawkins plot takes minimal screen time.

- alright, i’m not gonna talk about specific ships. as previously stated, there are no ships I’m emotionally attached to in this show, and there are a couple that I genuinely don’t like... but i have to ask- is anyone happy/fully satisfied with how the ship content has played out this season??? because... I feel like no matter what you ship (or dislike), it wasn’t good for you. (I guess with the possible exception of people who ship mike & el or joyce & hopper and 100% don’t care about anything else?)

- all the retconning of earlier events is annoying because it’s so clear they didn’t plan it out that way and are just trying to make things fit, even if that makes their earlier seasons seem weaker or make less sense. it’s so incredibly forced and i hate how easy it is to tell exactly what they’re doing.

- why do they have so many (mostly unnecessary) monologues in this season??? please, please stop this. they are exhausting when they aren’t needed.

- speaking of, did it irritate the hell out of anyone else how often we get scenes where everything stops so the characters can all stand around and lay out all the info we need to know, spoon feeding the story to the audience because they can’t seem to figure out how to have it make sense any other way. you shouldn’t have to do this practically every episode. there are plenty shows with way more complicated plots that don’t spend even a quarter of this much time doing this (e.g. Dark)

- why does no one have a sense of urgency this season??? like there have been so many instances of characters in supposedly “high stakes” situations where they should absolutely be entirely focused on surviving, just like stopping to have a heartfelt conversation or moment with another character at the worst possible time, but instead of that having any consequences, it’s just ignored by the show.

- what it comes down to, imo, is that this show lost sight of what is was and what made it good in the first place. it was lost in season 3, but it’s even more lost now. they’re so caught up in having “cool” scenes and drowning us in nostalgia in their visuals and music and references, that they’ve forgotten that the simplest of things often hit the hardest.

- there’s a bunch of crap that just doesn’t make sense. it just doesn’t. and they might try to address some of those things in season 5 (or they might never), but a lot of them are just things that they clearly didn’t have an answer to when they were writing and now are trying to think up things to “explain” it.

- i’m sure there’s more i could say, but I’m tired and i am baffled by people thinking this is a well made season of television. there’s no accounting for taste, that’s subjective, but i can’t believe people think the writing and editing, as technical crafts, are anything short of dreadful this time around.

- i’m not a monster so i’ll leave this on my positive notes- i like the idea of Vecna (not so much his backstory, but the supernatural being itself) and the powers he has, Sadie Sink has been wonderful this season and has imo the best scene in the season, i do really enjoy most of the cast, there are glimmers of good it’s just that they don’t last very long.

okay but so true bestie 😭 13 is NOT the longest running doctor (counting eps) but yaz IS the longest running companion (counting series) im fine being a hypocrite about this

wait but. shes been there from 13's first until 13's last episode thats like. must be a record. at least in new who. like only rose did that and 9 only had one series. anyway even if it's not a record it still feels special <3 there hasnt been a companion doctor duo who was together the entire time in new who

yeah! so my source is tardis wiki:

(note the clara one is stories not episodes, so while yaz has been in 31 episodes that only counts as 25 (? if I counted right) stories, because spyfall 1&2 count as 1 and flux only counts as 1, which is bullshit)

so for calendar time yaz is the undisputed longest, and for modern companions she is the only one with 3 complete seasons (I believe clara would be the runner up here, 2.5 seasons)

In terms of calendar time counting for companions but not doctors, it somehow feels different? idk why, it just Is. vibes

I do believe yaz is the only companion (other than rose&nine) to be with the doctor from first to last episode, and even that is somehow different as we dont know how long 9 was alone between regenerating in the 50th and meeting rose, while yaz is certifiably there from just after one regeneration to just before the next

because thats the thing isnt it? river telling them "i asked for help for you" and the doctor going "THATS SO STUPID"

amy and rory setting out a place for them. "but you didnt know i was coming, why would you set me a place?" "because we always do"

the doctor disappears and you dont know if or when they'll ever be back but i dont know if they expect you to wait for them. so many people throughout time who have told them "i waited for you" and it never seems to sink in that they wait for them. that they miss them.

the doctor quietly removing themself from people's lives bc they only bring chaos and destruction anyway. it's better like this. theyre saving them by leaving.

clara going "i mean it's not like im never gonna see you again" "isnt it?" "is it?" "i thought thats what you wanted" "but youre gonna come around for dinner or something arent you? do you do that? come around peoples houses for dinner?" "of course" they lie because they dont "thought you mind find it boring"

"do you want to come for tea at mine?"

maybe they do find it boring. or maybe thats an easier sentiment to express, an easier idea to grapple with, than the fact that there are people who care about them enough to spend time with them when nothing particularly exciting is happening, spend time with them just doing human maintenance things, when they dont need them. because theyre not necessary when there is no danger. theyre not needed, just wanted. because theyre not loved by the people who love them for being The Doctor, theyre loved for being the doctor.

and maybe it’s easier to say it’s boring, that they dont do that sort of thing, than to say they want to, but they dont know how, because it’s never quite right, because their big blue box breaks chairs in the living room, and whats missing from them is so much more evident when theyre surrounded by people who are connected, who have a place they belong and each other and a shared history

so they just leave, because youve got your own good safe human life to lead, because they cant fathom the idea that you will miss them, because it hurts to try to make connections on top of the gaping craters of broken ones, because they cant quite fix themself to anything, because theyre out of place everywhere, because it hurts less to swoop in, save the day, be unknown but adored for a day, every day.

so many people love and wait and miss the doctor and they don't get it! But then to contrast that with their mother, someone who is supposed to love you, and maybe even does in some weird twisted way, but never in a way that compares to the people the doctor finds themselves, is ugh. how do you do this. please keep making me sad with your videos
